Backward reading can be fun however pointless it serves. Backward thinking, on the other hand, is conflicting it makes investigating and experimenting the skills to hone.

Humanist Dad's Forward Vs backward thinking provided investigation as the ground to grow forward thinking against backward one. It nurtures the value of conclusion based on evidence rather than finding evidence to support conclusion.

Backward Thinking
The detective comes to the scene and sees a dead woman, a kitchen knife in her chest, lying in the living room. A crying man is sitting at the kitchen table with blood all over his shirt and hands shouting, "I killed her!" The detective decides that the man is most likely the killer and begins finding evidence to support his theory: signs of a struggle, the man's fingerprints on the knife, the next-door neighbour whispers that she always heard them arguing, they have high debts. The man is obviously guilty, no need to waste money doing more investigations, case closed.
Forward Thinking
Another detective enters the same scene and collects the same evidence. However, he then looks for other evidence as part of his routine: fingerprints are taken from all doors and windows, footsteps around the house are collected, tires marks on the driveway are analyzed, cigarette ashes are found on the floor but no ashtrays. This evidence suggests a third person was at the house recently (who the detective simply calls Mr. X). The detective formulates a theory - The man owed a debt to a shady character (Mr. X) who smoked. Mr. X entered the house and argued with the man and woman. Mr. X grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the woman. The distraught man tried to remove the knife but couldn't and hugged the woman while she died. He blames her death on his debt to Mr. X. The detective has a valid theory but still requests more time to investigate further.

Backward thinking when taken literally and actually will reap the benefits of attentiveness and focus. The Power of Backward thinking delved with experimenting on advantages of backward thinking in dealing with threats as an evolutionary root.

Psychologist Severine Koch and her colleagues at Radboud University Nijmegen ran this simple experiment. They had volunteers walk just a few steps, either forward, backward, to the left or to the right. Then they immediately took the Stroop test. This is the test with the names of colors printed in different color inks; the word blue, for example, might be printed in blue—or it might be printed in red or yellow. The volunteers try very quickly to name the color of the ink rather than read the word. It’s cognitively very difficult to quash the impulse to read, so fast and accurate responses are taken as an indicator of focus and concentration.
The results, reported in the May issue of the journal Psychological Science, were intriguing. Those who had walked just a few steps backward were far more focused and attentive than were any of the others. That is, their physical retreat triggered increased mental control—presumably because of the ancient link between threat and vigilance.

Backward thinking slows us down in times of threat. It gives us time and space to reconsider other choices or options. These choices empower us to attain self-control to further our thoughts and actions.

However, backward thinking can inflict harm specially if we are to judge the actions of others. Since we are at the safe side, to value the convenience of having conclusion without considering all the details is more enticing than drawing a conclusion from the evidences. Since we are at the safe side, to cast verdict is less engaging into thinking and much easier than facing the conflicts of investigation.

How backward is backward thinking? It is backward if absolutely self-serving. Under threat, backward thinking will keep us safe. Under no harm circumstance, backward thinking pulls us back to sloth to experiment and investigate and values the convenience of ignorance is bliss.

Stranded on Root

It is disheartening to know the devastation caused by a typhoon in my country. Although it has been a regular scenario ever since I became aware of it, factors like climate change, proper disposal of increased waste must be seriously considered to lessen the effect of the rainy season, that is flood.

I remember growing up as a child being asked with this question: "Gaano kataas ang baha sa inyo?" (How high is the flood level in your place?)

Yes. It is not a question of if there's a flood or not. It is already given that there's always have. It has gotten worse after three decades.

Worsen weather condition is globally acceptable as a climate change consequence. Man made contribution is to be elaborated here. It is the failure to see this as the root of the catastrophic consequence.

Why?

I find it insensitive to attribute the heavy rains to the "crying" of the heaven because Reproductive Health Bill will finally be deliberated in the Congress, which has reached thus far after its more than decade of rejection. The rejection is due to the strong opposition by the Catholic church that only sanctions Natural method of Family Planning. And forms of contraception is attributed to abortion which is illegal in the Philippines.

Excessive consumption and inability to dispose it properly are my considered roots of the flood problem. Population makes it excessive. Believing ultimate happiness in the after life justifies our carelessness for this life in the here and now. Better to prepare for the next life, therefore should follow the church, is a lot convenient than taking charge to solve one's problem.

Instead of being stranded on the root of these floods, let's think of something we can do about it.

For my short term solution, I am attempting to lessen my waste by reusing, recycling and disseminating its value. Being responsible of our waste can start from at home by following these steps. This site also suggests recycling basics.

For long term solution, small wastes when compounded together can become huge in due time. This is where a sustainable population growth comes in. If we are blinded by the desire to be in heaven after death, we will be prey to exploitation. If we desire to live for the present, there's a chance that we can leave this life better for the benefit of next generation.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "none".

The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.
The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.
Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: "Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered," I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked,"please tell me your feelings."

The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, I am not successful today. Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, "This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality" and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others.

For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person.

The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

Reading The time Is Write blog on Making a Leap made me wonder if I am becoming the writer I want to be. Which brings me to a question do I really know what I want to write?

The blogger’s preference to creative nonfiction over fiction enables me to consider if my shower of poetry is refreshing both to me and to those who consider to read it.

Suddenly I feel unappreciated. My poetry sucks most of the time but I still continue because my appreciation of thoughts turn to words brings me unprecedented scent of well-being.

So, to beat the insecurity out of me, I hit the keyboard in the “poetry writing tips” letters (of course ‘enter’ at the end) and found this useful blog

Don’t be afraid to write from a different point of view. Write a poem that says exactly the opposite of what you believe. If you can’t do it without irony.

Listen to talk radio while you write. Listen to the people who call. Great characters and voices emerge that way.

Aside from fact that the above tips are my favorites and I resolve to do in my next attempt to bathe with words, will it bring me back to the question do I really know what I want to write?

All I know is I just want to better my poetry and continue to have a habit of writing since I started using WordPress blog this month. So any topic that would arouse my ire(not this case, of course), feed my curiosity, and widen my horizons will soak my writing tub.

How can I be the change I want to see the world?

Seeing the world with less misery has kept me dreaming. So in my attempt to make this dream come true, I have come up with what makes my life miserable and its resolution.

Pleasing Everybody. It is the easiest way to avoid conflict, earn validation, consume energy and time, and get disappointed.

Since I know how powerful mind can create thoughts and its ability to make it a reality, the tendency to be right is so convincing it makes you forget other minds. The good news is so as everyone else. Being kind to stupid idea, nice to useless thoughts, and pleasing to ignorance are conflicts to the ability of one's mind. To avoid conflicts, I tend to forget my ability to reason and to converse. It makes me miserable.

What now? I resolve to express what I contemplated as right and be accountable of the consequence.Just have to give my best shot hoping that it will not kill anyone. And remind myself that I can also get hit because I chose to be around. Otherwise, stop finding sweet chili.

Validation is addicting. Like any addiction it can make you lose self-control. It's like having camouflage pants then wondering where it is now. Pleasing everybody robs me of my identity. And identity defines my integrity. What now? I resolve to mean what I say. Words are nothing without the character. The possibility of getting both constructive and destructive validation is conceivable. It will raise unnecessary emotion but my consolation is that it's the truth. Those who value integrity will understand.

Saying yes to everyone is energy and time consuming. It leaves me nothing to myself. Without myself, how can I sustain life's demand. What now? I resolve to value my priorities and trust my judgement.

My desire to understand what makes me miserable is not an easy process. Identifying one's misery is as deceiving as recognizing it. Once accomplished, taking control of your life is worthwhile endeavor.

So to find words to those misery hues, I would like you to ponder on the following other ways and feel free to suggest your own resolves:

Keep up to date on celebrity culture. We all know that celebrities lead charmed, perfect lives. They don’t ever get sick; they have lots of money and are all perfectly balanced human beings. Read up on them, yearn to be them and above all idolize them as the gods they are. Never forget that your life is a meaningless travesty compared to theirs.
Be a martyr and never ever put your own needs first. Make sure that you put your spouse, kids even the mail mans happiness above yours. These people are far more important than you, so show them that by neglecting yourself. Don’t worry if you get sick and die because that will just cement your position in the Martyr’s Hall of Fame.Berate yourself often. If you make a mistake, tell yourself. You know you’re a jerk so tear yourself off a strip and do it in as an aggressive and condescending manner as possible. If you ever find yourself saying nice stuff internally, back up, delete it, and then say something along the lines of “You half-wit who the hell do you think you are?”
Judge others. Don’t listen to people that say you can’t judge a book by a cover. You haven’t got time to read books so how else are you supposed to make up your mind than glancing at the cover? If they are fat then they eat too much, if they smoke they are stupid and if they are out of work then it’s obvious they’re lazy. Soldiers, surgeons and athletes have to make rapid decisions so why not you
Refuse to see other people’s point of view. If you have an opinion, stick to it. You’ve spent years fine-tuning your belief system so hang on to it for grim death. Nobody likes a fickle, weak-willed, flip-flopper so don’t let something as simple as contrary evidence persuade you that you could be wrong. Even if you realize you are wrong, bat on regardless and look confident. If that doesn’t work, shout a lot.
Always whine and complain about stuff that is out of your control. Great examples are the weather, other people’s actions and the housing market. Don’t ever miss an opportunity to remind people that life is much worse and much harder than they think it is. Then drive home your point by giving them a long list of examples of stuff that is wrong with the world and why it was better during the depression/war/60′s* (* delete where applicable). Read More

Sweet Chillies

Let's learn from this story:

A rich merchant saw a man selling a small green fruit which he had never seen before. The merchant was hungry and the luscious green fruit looked so fresh and appetizing and the merchant was tempted and curious so he asked the vendor,

“What is this...?”

“Chillies, fresh green chillies,” said the hawker.

The merchant held out a gold coin and the vendor was so overjoyed that he gave the merchant the full basket of chillies.

The merchant sat down under a tree and stared to munch the chillies.

Within a few seconds his tongue was on fire, his mouth burning and tears streamed down his cheeks.

But despite this discomfort, the merchant went on eating the chillies, chewing them one by one, scrutinizing each chilli carefully before he put the piquant hot green chilli into his burning mouth.

Seeing his condition, a passerby remarked, “What’s wrong with you...? Why don’t you stop eating those spicy hot chillies... ? ”

“Maybe out of all these chillies there is one that is sweet,” the merchant answered, “I am waiting for the sweet chilli.”

And the merchant continued eating the chillies.

On his way back, the passerby noticed that the merchant’s

condition had become miserable, his face red with agony and copious tears pouring out of his burning eyes.

But the merchant kept on eating the chillies, in his search for the ‘sweet one’.

“Stop at once, or you will die,” the passerby shouted. “There are no sweet chillies... Haven’t you realized that...? Look at the basket – it is almost empty. And have you found even one sweet chilli yet...? ”

“I cannot stop until I eat all the chillies. I have to finish the whole basketful,” the merchant croaked in agony, “I have paid for the full basket and I will make sure I get my full money’s worth.”

What's the point? Don't be stupid. There's no sweet chilly. Hope is a good thing when one can distinguish reality from faith.

Everyone has varied tipping point. One's half glass is another's half full. The extent of chilliness relativity has nothing to do with the existence of a sweet chilly. Well, unless it has been genetically modified but that is another story.

Faith finds convenience in dependency to an external force, like destiny or grand designer, to make things better. I find it irresponsible for a decent, intelligent and capable human to think this way. It is even more insulting to base our actions on JUST mere leap of faith.

The merchant weakness, hunger and ignorance, contributed to perceiving the chilly as palatable. Our tendency to associate things based on what we see is a decisive factor. Since grapes and kiwi are sweet, this must be sweet too. Since popes are rich, believing in his belief can make me rich too. Since my friend is popular, with him I will be popular too. And so on and so forth. And this association makes us their slaves.

For all its worth, the decision is yours. Be enslaved and stay ignorant. Or, learn from the weakness and take control of your life, stop and move on.

Busy As a Bee

Well, not in pollinating way but in a rhyming way.

I have been busy with my other blog that I am not able to fulfill my everyday entry here. It doesn't mean that this blog will be forgotten or less to be attended to. It only means that with time comes a meaningful elaboration.

Asking the right question, finding answer to that and making sense of that Q&A is no easy task. It requires gathering information, being critical of those and courage to change your mind, if not others. But with practice, I am determined to do elaboration on topics that I perceive to be meaningful in one existence.

Movies, quotations, features, news, conversations and my everyday experiences will continue to supply my imagination. My reflection will always be based on my desire to better humanity's role in living our lives.

And so, I would not make this any longer. Please be informed that this blog will still be rebellious in the conservative point of view. Its objective intention will delve with ideas more than anything else. Since it is objective, i will get as much information available in the cyber world and present to you in a provocative way.

Well, I guess the above image relates to writing activity. It's safe to be the average. But in a small organization finding its way to success, a strategist must be able to make plan long term goals by analyzing the risk, and be able to multitask in the balance in exercising risk-taking and cautious decision making to accommodate the task to be prioritized.

Of course, we cannot find all those characteristics in one personality. This describes the role of these personalities in the success of an organization.

Theirs is a life where an old, dirty ball kissing the dust is their only source of joy, where memories of their loved ones are their only possession, where their only hope is to have a food to be shared and wake up the next morning with body parts intact if not burned to death. This is the everyday reality of the children in South Sudan trapped in a war that gives meaning to Sam Childers’ life. His humanity made me watch the movie “Machine Gun Preacher” till the end. It makes me dwell on the question if I could, would I?

If you found meaning for knowing God, I would not deny you of your ecstasy in this endeavor and you will fins Sam's story palatable.

Attending the ministry gave him the strength to realize a change in his life that led him to become a preacher. Seeing the suffering and the unspoken pain of the children humanizes him again and again. It made him angry to his business partner who wastes money to host a lavish party to those who have much in their lives to show off rather than share to the least fortunate. It made him opted to use gun to protect the children. It made him doubt his faith and question the power of his god to end the evil. His concern to the children’s pain and suffering abducted him from his ministry and family. And he kills people (well, at least not in the name of god) to keep those children alive. If you could bring the children home by any means, would you? It is the challenge he posted at the end of the film. Being with those children in Sudan till today is his reply to this question.

If you could , would you? It is the moral question I would like to resolve more than finding meaning in super natural. Being a believer of self-respect and self-empowerment, I give a damn to those who cannot take control of their lives. Take for instance, one gets addicted because of the weakness to control one’s knowledge, decision and action. I watch the film to make sense of the story (also because of Gerard Butler and the Ugly Truth) and not because it is a story of a preacher who kills or a story of a criminal who became a preacher. I am strong enough not to be controlled by my knowledge that religion is a selfish concept because you are motivated to do good for the rewards like salvation and place to heaven and not for good sake. I am strong enough not to be dictated by the popular opinion for fear to stand alone while others are on their knees begging for supernatural attention. As much as I would like to have a religious note on the line "God particle" in the quantum mechanics song being played in the physics' air, it will be the least to modulate in my greatest dance hit. Since it feels great that physics' origin of the universe crescendo has just begun, dancing to its up beat is the "boson" line.

It is explained here how the strength of coupling of the massive particle with the Higgs field relates to the value of the mass. Coupling in physics, according to Wikipedia, is an interaction of two systems, in this case, particle and force that is the Higgs field.

Without this Higgs boson, everything in the universe is suspected to be massless and will behave like photons at the speed of light. Just imagine yourself in a place with no gravity (a force equivalent to our mass that pulls us to the ground) that holds everything intact, everything will collapse. The only thing is that gravity is the weakest of the force while the boson carries the strongest one. Just imagine the gravity, er, the boson, of chaos.

To further explain, take for example our body is the particle and the clothing we wear is the Higgs field. For us to be able to run fast we must wear light. The more clothes we wear, the slower we move. This slow movement creates the phenomenon of mass. The existence of the Higgs boson as a carrier of Higgs field proves the existence of this field. Just like existence of electromagnetic field is proved by the existence of photon.

Moreover, the discovery of this tiny, little, small, petite, insignificant, microscopic (I have to make sure it's not negligible) physical circumstance from leptons, quarks to boson brings us to the next level of unlocking the answer to the ultimate question: How it all started? (Now I am wondering since when did I start to sing on top of the chair?)

I am always been fascinated by Physics. I remember my first ever short story published in the student paper was inspired by a rubber band and the physics of it.

Whenever my life is down or high, the lesson I learned from the classical physics, that is predictability, enables me to identify the degrees, speed and force to apply to move my life's state. Should I incline to my intellect or emotion sooner or later to realize change is the question that defines my self-empowerment contrary to professing my unworthiness and incompetency to satisfy an egotistic supernatural.

The general relativity chorus the sound to equal setting. The voices of responsibility, accountability, truth and justice create my rhythm of objectivity. I sing to the music of Einstein's harmony.

Quantum physics reminds me that from small beginnings come great things. And everything is held together by a mysterious force called love. Like the electrons that attract the quark of protons held together by gluons.

Second, it will extend the frequency of our role in the rational understanding of our universe. Lastly, The sound of human accountability will echo in space and time.

HIggs boson was first called "goddam particle" by American physicist Leon Lederman for its elusiveness and for marketing purposes.

"God particle" is just like a jingle in a commercial. It is the advertising tone to sell products. Now, it is the soundtrack of creationists' coming soon cinema.

Anyways, it bleeds my ear to hear the idea that creationists use scientific discoveries to prove their claims.

Since I will prefer to be the director than the actor, the following will be the plot. First, if I am all-powerful, all-knowledgeable, all-benevolent entity, this kind of cheating, that is huming the tune of science, will not be the sound to echo in an empty hall. Second, I will not allow humans to account my grand work to a smaller than atom level. Lastly, it is more exciting to uncover the mystery than to claim certainty by guessing.

The bottom line is that the epic rap of science and its anti-science is a sound more than just a noise. It stimulated me to compose the beat of a sound mind.

To some, the why to live is answerable by the values we accord to our accomplishments. Mothers have their children. Fathers support their family. Children meet parents' expectations. These reasons can keep us going.

Let's not forget that this question invented dogma, if not polymagma, as an absolute answer.

The reason to live is to keep living is a no-brainer reply. For me, it can only be done with confidence to make it done no matter what. Remember the bunny drumming its way along the great wall of China. Just keep on going.

Self-empowerment is my inertia to giving up. The friction that goes with it does not burn me up but warms me enough to gain the energy. Just like the exercise that makes me sweat to be healthy, the resistance improves my way of life.

As much as I want to elaborate more how sweat cleans up the dirt off my skin, I would stretch it more to an "open" idea.

Self-empowerment opens me up to life's challenges. It makes me hear the popular opinion and plays the rhythm with my own mind. It makes me see the big picture and makes sense how the details fit in the figure. It makes me taste the spices in life and devour not the usual appetite. When life secretes "odor" that is attractive to nosy parasites, it raises my hand and serves as an invitation to have a try. It moves me to feel the external lives.

This is my reason to live. To make sense of my life. Experience the noise and lullabies, the ugliness and its beauty, stay hungry and foolish, fill myself up till saturated, discharge the unwanted when it gets constipated, to act more than to react.

Self-empowerment fuels my direction and values, motivation, emotional stability, positive mind-set, self-awareness, flexibility in behavior, eagerness to develop, health and energy, willingness to take risks, and sense of purpose. If those are not enough reasons to have a life, I will just resort to bullying those full of drama.

Most importantly, I feel accomplished when I am standing up when standing is not
easy. That means my inner force is greater than "gravitational" pulls. In exercising self-empowerment, my life has been in motion on a solid ground.

Both appeared pessimistic.

1. MULTI-TASKING
Women - Multiple process Women's brains designed to concentrate multiple task at a time. Women can Watch a TV and Talk over phone and cook.
Men - Single Process Men's brains designed to concentrate only one work at a time. Men can not watch TV and talk over the phone at the same time. they stop the TV while Talking. They can either watch TV or talk over the phone or cook.

2. LANGUAGE
Women can easily learn many languages. But can not find solutions to problems. Men can not easily learn languages, they can easily solve problems. That's why in average a 3 years old girl has three times higher vocabulary than a 3 yeard old boy.

3. ANALYTICAL SKILLS
Men's brains has a lot of space for handling the analytical process. They can analyze and find the solution for a process and design a map of a building easily. But If a complex map is viewed by women, they can not understand it. Women can not understand the details of a map easily, For them it is just a dump of lines on a paper.

4. CAR DRIVING.
While driving a car, mans analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fastly. If he sees an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and he drives accordingly. Where woman take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. Mans single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrates only on driving.

5. LYING
When men lie to women face to face, they get caught easily. Womans super natural brain observes facial expression 70%, body language 20% and words coming from the mouth 10%. Mens brain does not have this. Women easily lie to men face to face.
So guys, do not lie face to face.

6. PROBLEMS SOLVING
If a man have a lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and puts them in individual rooms in the brain and then finds the solution one by one. You can see many guys looking at the sky for a long time. If a woman has a lot of problems, her brain can not classify the problems. she wants some one to hear that. After telling everything to a person she goes happily to bed. She does not worry about the problems being solved or not.

7. WHAT THEY WANT
Men want status, success, solutions, big process, etc... But Women want relationship, friends, family, etc...

8. UNHAPPINESS
If women are unhappy with their relations, they can not concentrate on their work. If men are unhappy with their work, they can not concentrate on the relations.
