It may be a bit of a stretch to say that Nissan has gone all in with its EV gamble. But the truth is that Nissan is banking heavily on the success of their electric vehicles. They’re off to a decent start with the LEAF on the road and two more EV’s in the works, an Infiniti compact and a Nissan cargo van. But now the question is, what kind of EV should Nissan build next? There are currently three contenders for Nissan’s next EV efforts; a small city car, a sports car, or a crossover. The city car would have global appeal, a sports car with garner interest in EV’s, and a crossover would arguably be the most practical.

Well, if you’re asking me, I’d like to see Nissan go out and take a chance with their next EV. What I mean by that is, they should make an electric sports car based off of the rear-wheel drive ESFLOW concept. I’m not sure I see the need for a small city car when they LEAF is already up for sale. Perhaps a small two-seater is what they had in mind? Sorry, I can’t really get excited about that.

Nor can I get excited about an electric crossover. The larger size and heavier weight would almost certainly hurt range, and I can’t see soccer moms flocking to a vehicle that might leave them stranded while running errands. Besides, I always saw crossovers as more long distance driving vehicles.

But a sports car? The only people buying an electric sports car would be people who can afford the luxury of owning a sports car. This already means making sacrifices like rear seat legroom, trunk space, and fuel economy. Obviously, building an electric sports car could also result in serious range limitations if people drive it hard. But it could also inject some excitement into the EV market.

Imagine a rear-drive Nissan electric sports car as fast as a V8 Mustang and priced about the same. Sure, it might not go as far, but we all know that electric motors produce a ton of torque at 0 RPM. Nissan wouldn’t even have to go after the 400+ hp Mustang though; they could make a lightweight Miata or Genesis Coupe fighter. It doesn’t have to have Tesla Roadster performance (though that’d be nice.)

I just want an electric car that I can get excited about for all the wrong reasons…speed, handling, and dynamic, sexy looks for about the same cost as the current Nissan LEAF. A tall order? Sure. But who ever got ahead by taking the easy way out?

The latest Government figures on the amount of electricity generated by wind power have been welcomed by RenewableUK, the country’s largest renewable energy trade association, as proof of the increasingly significant contribution wind energy makes to UK households.

Statistics for the third quarter of 2011, released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, show that renewable sources generated 9 per cent of the UK’s electricity from July to September. That represents an increase of nearly 1 per cent on the same quarter last year.

DECC highlighted the fact that the amount of electricity generated from offshore wind has increased “substantially” compared to the same quarter in 2010, partly because of increased capacity, and partly because it was the windiest September for at least ten years.

When the overall figures for the first three quarters of 2011 (Jan – Sept) are taken into account, the statistics show a 64% increase in the amount of electricity generated by offshore wind on the same three quarters for last year (up from 4865 gigawatt hours to 6618GWh), and a 36% increase for onshore wind (up from 1943 GWh to 3189 GWh).

Dr Gordon Edge, RenewableUK’s Director of Policy, said: “This is another strong set of statistics from DECC, proving that despite the anti-wind propaganda being spouted by lobbyists with their own particular agendas, wind turbines are continuing to generate increasingly large amounts of electricity for the UK’s households.

We will continue to offer a secure supply of clean energy which will reduce our dependence on ultra-expensive fossil fuels such as gas. Let’s not forget that it’s the cost of importing gas which has sent domestic fuel bills through the roof, so we have to get off the fossil fuel hook. Renewable sources such as wind offer us excellent value for money overall. We believe that hard-pressed households deserve the best deal when it comes to cutting their energy bills in the long term, Dr Edge commented.

DECC also highlighted the growth in the UK’s installed capacity to generate electricity from renewable sources of 400 megawatts in the third quarter of the year – a 12 per cent increase on Q3 a year earlier. Nearly two-thirds of that increase (240MW) came from onshore and offshore wind, with the first turbines of the Ormonde and Greater Gabbard offshore wind farms beginning operation.

The UK now has enough installed capacity to supply more than 3,300,000 homes from wind energy.

In 2011, the tech world saw the release of game-changing gadgets including the iPhone 4s, Kindle Fire and iPad 2. But along with the good (and, yes, sometimes, the bad) came the bizarre.

And by bizarre, we mean the weird gadget creations and unexpected Internet sensations that went viral (cue Rebecca Black's "Friday").

Nonetheless, the strangest of the strange in the tech world made headlines by pushing the limits of technology, and this year it felt like there were more than ever.

Here are some of 2011's most unusual and out of the ordinary tech headlines, stories we never thought could happen -- which baffled us when they did.

1. Implanting organs in the name of art

As if two ears weren't enough, an Australian artist named Stelarc has decided to implant a third beneath the skin of his arm.

This performance artist wants to make his arm an acoustic device by attaching a wireless microphone to the implanted ear. The process took more than a decade and, he says, will take another year for his cells to fully grow on the ear's structure.

Once the ear is fully grown, the organ will be wirelessly linked to the Internet and allow the artist to share what his third ear hears with anyone who cares to tune in.

But, seriously, who wants to listen to an arm?

2. Japanese lab invents Internet kissing machine

Trying to give your partner a smooch through video chat and leaving lipstick smeared on your webcam is less than attractive.

Luckily, Japanese creators at Tokyo's Kajimoto Laboratory have made a "Kiss Transmission Device" for those long-distance lovers who want to share their affection.

Simply wiggle your tongue on a plastic straw, and it will transmit a signal that remotely makes another plastic straw wiggle -- presumably while it is in your lover's mouth.

This takes "keeping in touch" to a new and literal level.

3. This 'robot ostrich' probably will outrun you

Many animals can sprint faster than a human. Now, a "robot ostrich" is among them.

Scientists are trying to imitate the fastest two-legged runner on the planet by creating a robot ostrich that stands almost 5 feet tall, weighs 66 pounds and can run at speeds up to 32 mph. Fittingly, founders call this speedy ostrich FastRunner.

Although it hasn't been said what the robot bird will be used for, speculators assume that it is designed to go to war. To be sure, watching this birdie in motion may creep out those on the battlefield and beyond.

4. German scientists invent brain-powered car

No need to position your hands on the steering wheel to drive. Now, all you have to do is put your mind to it, and the car will execute your brain's commands.

Scientists at Germany's Free University are the innovators behind this brain-powered car.

A high-tech helmet is linked to an onboard computer that displays a cube on the screen. The driver can manipulate this cube with their thoughts. Using biological signals as patterns, the driver can pilot the car to drive in any direction, accelerate or break.

This may be only the beginning of what can evolve in the world of brain-powered computing.

But don't get too giddy just yet. The creators say the invention is only a "proof of concept experiment" and will not be speeding into action any time soon.

Still, the fact is that this creation is an out of the ordinary idea that bewilders us to think it exists at all.

5. Forget planking -- who's up for owling?

Some people stop at nothing and take owling to the extreme.

Planking was quite popular this year, as many folks went online to share images of themselves lying stiff as a board in public. But the trend shifted, at least for a brief Web moment, to mimicking everyone's favorite wise and nocturnal feathered friend.

The spinoff became a peculiar addiction for some, and owling has become one of the largest Internet memes.

People have shared images owling atop statues, houses and office desks. Some have even taken this bird's actions below ground level and participated in underwater owling.

It's pretty simple. Squat on an object, press your arms toward the ground, straighten your back and raise your head as you gaze into the distance and sit perched, well, like an owl.

Bellowing a "hoot" or two is optional.

6. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg eats only what he kills

"The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder and CEO, announced in May.

He calls it a "personal challenge"; we say it's just plain weird. Zuckerberg kills the animals and sends them off to a butcher in Santa Cruz, California, who cuts them into parts. From there, it's left for Zuckerberg to cook and consume.

Zuckerberg has begun his slaughtering challenge and made goats, pigs and chickens his prey.

7. Feeling lonely? Go hug yourself

We all need a hug at times, but it doesn't always happen when someone non-creepy is around to give us one. Instead, you can hug yourself by wearing a vest that hugs you back.

This invention, which was displayed at Japan's 3D and Virtual Reality Expo this year, allows individuals to wear a coded black vest that simulates a hug through programmed air compressions.

The mastermind behind this creation says he was curious as to how it would feel.

We think that if that aforementioned non-creepy person isn't around, it may be better to ask the creep for that hug before putting on this very odd vest.

8. Missing cobra sinks fangs into Twitter

Want to win more than 75,000 followers on Twitter within 24 hours? Morph into an Egyptian cobra and escape from New York's Bronx Zoo.

This venomous snake slid its way out of the zoo back in late March and slithered onto social media, publishing witty tweets of its whereabouts like, "Leaving Wall Street. These guys make my skin crawl."

Since March, the snake has been found, returned to the zoo and amassed more than 200,000 followers. It is still also actively tweeting through its account, @BronxZoosCobra.

And for the skeptics, the serpent published a post saying, "A lot of people are asking how I can tweet with no access to a computer or fingers. Ever heard of an iPhone? Duh."

9. Camera adds makeup to photographs

Cameras -- or at least one in particular -- may replace diamonds as a woman's best friend.

Panasonic's Lumix FX77 camera allows users to add effects to the pictures they take, such as whitening teeth and magnifying eyes, making subjects picture perfect.

For the women who forgot to brush on the blush or add color to the lip, the beauty retouch function allows users to manipulate the settings and glamorize their pictures.

It is an electronic transformation with an automatic alteration tool that makes Photoshop and other photo editing devices eat dust.

10. MC Hammer launches his own search engine

From writing rhymes to selling millions of records, this hip-hop veteran has realized his dreams and now says he's entered the final stages of creating an entire search engine.

MC Hammer said that his newest tech creation, called WireDoo, is built around searching for relationships and not just keywords. He announced the project at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco in mid-October and predicts that WireDoo could outperform Google.

It's hard to decide what's more strange: The fact that MC Hammer is launching his own search engine or that he believes his creation can take on Google on its own turf. It's a tossup.

With all of the uncanny and out of the ordinary news that made headlines in the tech world this year, it bewilders us to think of what could possibly be left to create. But there are undoubtedly more where these ... um ... creative ideas came from.

We will just have to wait and see whether 2012 will beat them for sheer bizarreness.

No Problem!

….if you live in either Vienna or Sylt, that is. (Or if you go to Paris.) The largest car rental agency in Europe, Europcar, has recently made a few EVs available in Vienna, and this week they announced 5 rentable electric Citroen C-Zeros in Germany’s largest North Sea island: Sylt.

Renting a C-Zero in Sylt isn’t prohibitively expensive; one to two days will cost the customer 49 euros/day ($64USD). Take the car for more than two days and the price goes down ($39 USD per day for 8 days, for example). Europcar also charges about 10 cents a mile (USD) to cover the cost of electricity but the car can be charged for no cost to the consumer at a charging station or brought back totally empty.

Rent Electric?

Vienna and Sylt aren’t Europcar’s first foray into electric mobility; the company has done some testing in Algaeu with the Luis4U and in Rhine-Ruhr with a Renault Fluence. Now, however, seems to be the right time to offer electric vehicles to the public, and the Citroen C-Zero seems to be the right car to do it with.

Roland Keppler, CEO of Europcar Autovermietung GmbH in Germany, spoke very enthusiastically about the future of electric cars to Oekonews at:

“We like to think of ourselves as an innovative mobility service. That means we also have to push forward with new mobility solutions as they hit the market. By introducing the Citroen C-Zero, we’re clearly one of the first to move toward electric mobility in the car rental industry. We’re sending a clear signal here in terms of sustainability. Electric cars are the way of the future, and we want our customers to be able to experience them.”

Why Sylt?

As a tourist destination, Sylt has a diverse and changing population. It also already has a number of EV charging stations with parking spots attached, with more on the way. All the electricity available at those stations is guaranteed to be 100% emission-free from all renewable sources. While most stations are the standard type that take approximately 6 hours to charge the C-Zero, there is also one rapid-charging station that will put the battery at 80% in just 30 minutes.

Tim Ohler, project leader for electric mobility at Europcar, told Oekonews.at why Sylt made such an attractive choice:

“Sylt is a closed test market with a broad mix of people – that’s fantastic. It has a well-designed infrastructure, making it possible to travel comfortably on the island, and it’s also easy to charge the EVs. In addition, Sylt is a market for innovation. Europcar can offer an emission-free clean mobility solution here, introducing electric vehicles to tourists and residents.”

For anyone in the area or heading in that direction, the C-Zero is all electric, has zero emissions and is completely silent. It has removable lithium ion batteries powering a 47kW motor. It has a range of just over 90 miles and a top speed of 81mph. It seats four, and of course, has all the requisite safety equipment.

Would you rent an electric car to see how they work before buying one, or just because it’s something different? Let us know in the comments, below.

Google has been quietly in the automobile business for some time. Driverless vehicles have been the main attraction and now the work has paid off; Google has been granted a patent for their “mixed-mode autonomous vehicle”. In time we may all being going for a ride with Google.

The “mixed-mode autonomous vehicle” patent is for technology that turns a car into a driverless vehicle (autonomous) and back again (manual). In autonomous mode the car uses a state of the art combination of video cameras, radar, and laser range finders to drive around. Switch the car back to manual and the driver is in complete control of the vehicle. These cars have already been in operation and have logged around 140,000 miles on America’s roads. You could have driven by one and may not have even noticed.

A self driven car removes the human element and that means a lot such as fewer accidents, less police action, and less fuel consumption. Many drives punch the gas and slam on the brakes – a lot of stop and go – the constant need for acceleration eats up gas. With the car doing the driving this would, hypothetically, not happen. Additionally, the autonomous vehicle would maintain a steady speed while traveling, sort of a constant cruise control, again a fuel saving feature. The potential for the use of Google’s technology is seemingly endless, just think of this technology integrated into a cities bus system.

Being granted the patent for the technology is just the beginning of making these autonomous vehicles mainstream – but a giant step none the less. Who knows when the Google autonomous vehicle will be available to the public, but the fact is they are out there and on the roads and Google is not the only company exploring this kind of technology. So, while we wait to be driven by our cars, keep your eyes open because that car next to you might just be driving itself.

Evatran, which produces Plugless Power, a wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging system, opened its online reservation system last week and announced that it is offering a $150 rebate card for up to 6 months of free electricity to customers who use the system.

“The Preferred Customer Group will allow Evatran to understand its focus areas for product rollout and follows the recent news of the installation partnership with Sears Home Services(TM),” Evatran commented.

“The incentive is open to the first 500 Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt reservations, and joining the Preferred Customer Group by reserving a system requires no upfront financial commitment.”

The benefit of the Plugless Power system is obvious — it’s convenient. The EV driver doesn’t really have to do anything.

“The wireless system automatically begins charging based on the vehicle’s requirements, which are communicated to the charging station over a wireless interface that mimics the corded SAE J1772 standard.”

All the EV needs is a small vehicle adapter mounted to the undercarriage of the car and “wired directly into the vehicle’s existing on-board battery charger.”

Here’s more on the rebate being offered, via the news release:

No financial commitment is required for the reservation of a system, and the incentive will continue until the Preferred Customer Group reaches 500 Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt owners. The first 500 names on the reservation list will receive a rebate card for $150 – the average electricity cost per mile across the United States ($.03/mile) for an average six-month mileage rate of 5,000 miles. The Preferred Customers will receive their rebate card when they complete the purchase process for their Plugless Power system later in 2012.

Note that Google has been testing wireless EV charging using Plugless Power since March or so.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say that replacing flat solar panels with three-dimensional structures could make photovoltaic systems as much as 20 times more effective.

In a series of tests, the researchers found that such 3D structures are able to pick up light even when thesun is at lower angles, and that internal reflections within the 3D panels help increase the amount of captured light.

The structures also can double the number of peak hours of generation. Scientists say even a simple cube shape, open at the top and covered with photovoltaic cells, could produce 3.8 times more power than a flat panel covering the same area. (By comparison, costly solar-tracking mount technology — which moves photovoltaic panels to follow the path of the sun — generates only 1.8 times more energy).

While the more complex structures would be more expensive than typical flat panels, researcher Marco Bernardi says the extra power would compensate for the cost difference.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers recently released a study examining the future of the U.S. electric grid. MIT concluded that developing a modern grid through the anticipation of needed improvements can facilitate the integration of renewable energy resources, accommodate a growing number of electric vehicles, improve resiliency, and enhance efficiency.

The President and his Administration agree on the importance of a modernized grid – and in June the National Science and Technology Council released A Policy Framework for the 21st Century Grid. The Policy Framework provides a roadmap to ensure that all Americans benefit from investments in the Nation’s electric infrastructure, and it features four policy pillars:

Enabling cost-effective investments to catalyze the development and deployment of new technologies and infrastructure;

Unleashing the potential of innovation in the electricity sector through a greater focus on standards and interoperability;

Empowering consumers and enabling informed decision making by responsibly expanding access to energy usage information;

Securing the grid from cyber-attacks and improving its recoverability in the event of one.

The Administration is taking a number of concrete steps to put these principles into action, building on the Department of Energy’s $4.5 billion in Recovery Act investments that are improving grid performance across the Nation. For example:

The Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utility Service is investing up to $250 million in cost-effective smart grid technology in rural America by June 2012.

To advance flexibility and interoperability within the grid, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released its Draft Standards Framework 2.0 for public comment.

The Administration has also launched Energy.Data.gov, an open government platform that brings together free high-value datasets and tools, maps, and apps to increase awareness of and deepen insights into our Nation’s energy performance.

And through its “microgrid” initiatives, the Department of Defense is working to test distributed generation and electricity distribution systems that will help enhance the security and efficiency of military bases both at home and abroad.

To empower consumers and foster innovation, the Administration will continue to promote the common-sense idea that consumers should be able to get access to and download their own energy usage information. That’s why U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra recently issued the Green Button challenge to industry—and utilities in California are already stepping up.

In a similar spirit, I am excited to see this week’s announcement from the Biggest Energy Savercompetition, which challenged electric utility customers in Texas to reduce their energy use. The top 10 percent of consumers cut their electric use by an average of 26 percent – and the grand prize winners in each region won a Chevy Volt.

And finally, the Administration is working to improve the overall quality and timeliness of electric transmission infrastructure permitting through the interagency Rapid Response Team for Transmission.

In his Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future, President Obama outlined a vision for safely and responsibly developing energy supplies while providing consumers with choices to reduce costs and save energy. In addition, as MIT’s new study confirms, modernizing our electric infrastructure is essential to America’s clean energy future.

In theory, automation is supposed to be helpful. Then I read an article the other day about the most embarrassing cell phone auto-corrections. Most are a little too racy to share, but the examples illustrate the challenges that can come with automated functions (like a cell phone’s auto-correct).

Thankfully, there is an example of an automated function that’s both helpful and makes you look smart: programmable thermostats. While there is a manual element to this incredible little tool, the primary function of this device is to automatically set your thermostat back when you leave the house or go to sleep – times when you’re heating or cooling aren’t needed. Brilliant.

So why should programmable thermostats be an automatic part of your every day?

According to ENERGY STAR®, the average household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills – nearly half of which goes to heating and cooling. Homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings. There often are pre-programmed settings designed for optimal efficiency, or you can set your own (OK, that’s a little bit “manual” but the end function is still automatic.)

What else do you need to know about programmable thermostats?

1. For starters, install your programmable thermostat unit on an interior wall, away from heating or cooling vents and other sources of heat or drafts.

2. Keep the temperature set at its energy savings set-points for long periods of time (at least eight hours is optimal) when you’re out of the home or at night.

3. You can override your settings from time to time if you need it warmer or cooler without erasing the pre-set programming.

4. Units typically have two types of hold features: (a) hold/permanent/vacation; (b) temporary. “Hold” or “vacation” features are best when you’re planning to be away for an extended period.

5. Cranking your unit up to 90 degrees or down to 40 degrees will not heat or cool your house any faster. Most thermostats begin to heat or cool at a set time, to reach setpoint temperatures sometime thereafter.

6. If your home has multiple heating or cooling zones, you’ll need a programmed setback thermostat for each zone to maximize comfort, convenience and energy savings throughout the house.

7. If it runs on batteries, don’t forget to change them!

As they say in the programmable thermostat game: set it and forget it.

And getting back to the not-so-helfpul automatic things: be sure to proof-read your texts before hitting send. Save yourself embarrassment… and an investigation.

One village in Germany is producing more energy than it needs. Best of all, it’s alternative energy sourced from clean sources.

Wildpoldsried, located in the southern German region known as Bavaria and where 2,600 people live, produces 321 per cent more energy than it needs. As a result, it can make money out of this energy surplus by selling back into the grid for a cool 4 million Euro, or US$5.7 million (that’s US$2,192 per person) per year.

The green initiative started in 1997 when the local council set out to create new jobs, attract new industries and keep it all local at the same time. Since then, Wildpoldsried has equipped nine new community buildings with solar panels, built four biogas digesters and installed seven wind mills. 190 private households have solar panels and the district benefits from small hydroplants, ecological flood control and a natural waste water system. The village is so successful that it has created a mission statement called WIR-2020, or Wildpoldsried Innovative Leadership, to inspire others.

The local community has received several awards for its conservation and alternative energy groundbreaking work and they visit other village councils to show them their climate protection (‘klimaschutz’) initiative. Mayor Zengerle even has been traveling abroad to inspire other communities to go green and make money at the same time.

And what is the main lesson we can learn from the citizens of Wildpoldsried? “The mitigation of climate change in practice can only be implemented with the citizens and with the Village Council behind them 100 per cent of the way. This model cannot be forced from only one side,” Zengerle told Biocycle.

Manufacturing solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules in China has been a tremendous success, at least if you’re willing to put off profitability for job creation to help assure social stability. Sustainable over the long term? No, not likely, but in less than a decade, China’s manufacturers have captured 48% of the global marketof silicon PV cells, as the excellent graphic from the Washington Post shows.

During this period, global production of solar PV cells has expanded tenfold. Prices of solar grade polysilicon, the raw material from which solar PV cells are made, have dropped 94% in three years.

Most of China’s market share gain has come at the expense of the world’s other leading solar PV manufacturers, Germany, Taiwan and Japan, though US manufacturers are also being squeezed hard by the flood of supply coming out of China. And Chinese manufacturers are suffering, as well. Six Chinese market leaders are relying on government-arranged bank credit facilities to assure their survival.

The Chinese government has pursued the same mercantilist, export-driven policies in stimulating growth of domestic solar PV manufacturers that characterizes its approach to economic development since market reform took root in the late 1980s. It’s one that Japan used to build its domestic manufacturing base, but with a centrally-controlled political economy, a two-tier financial system with tight controls over foreign investment inflows and outflows and a foreign exchange system that pegs the value of the yuan to the dollar, it’s in a much better position to do so.

But what if China looked inward rather than outward, trying instead to develop a domestic solar power industry value chain instead of focusing so narrowly on exports? It’s estimated that Chinese solar PV manufacturing capacity is 32-times greater than domestic demand. If they were half as successful in stimulating domestic demand for solar PV, many of the current challenges and problems in the solar PV market globally would be worked out in relatively short order.

It appears the Chinese government is moving in that direction. The Chinese government has officially announced an additional 50% increase in its solar PV generating capacity target in its current strategic 5-year plan, from 10 gigawatts (GW) to 15 GW. That follows an announcement earlier this year that the 2015 target was being raised from 5 GW to 10 GW.

In its latest media release, China’s National Energy Administration also announced a wind power capacity target of 100 GW for the five-year period, which was in line with previously announced plans. 5 GW of that are to be installed offshore.

This is a clear sign that China’s leaders not only recognize the global productive imbalance of supply-demand of which they now play so large a part, but the critical importance a shift to renewable energy sources has for their own economy, society, natural resources, and environment. Now, if only they’d shift to a truly market-driven exchange rate regime by allowing the yuan to float against the dollar and other currencies.

The Chinese government hasincreased its solar energy target for 2015 by 50 percent, setting a new goal of 15 gigawatts annually, state media reports.

The new target, which was reported by China National Radio, follows a rapid surge in Chinese solar power installation in recent months after thegovernment unified grid feed-in tariffs for solar projects in July.

At the end of 2010, installed solar capacity in China was less than one gigawatt. But China, the world’s top exporter of photovoltaic products, had already doubled its solar energy target to 10 gigawatts by 2015 following the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan, and the government now has boosted that goal to 15 gigawatts.

Meanwhile, a new industry report shows that U.S. solar installations jumped by nearly 40 percent during the third quarter of 2011, pushing the nation’s total annual installation beyond one gigawatt for the first time.

London got its first shipment of a new fleet of hybrid buses this week, just in time for Christmas. The new bus is supposed to be the most environmentally friendly of its kind, according to Business Green, and is allegedly 15% more fuel efficient than existing hybrid buses.

We Want Clean Air!

The new hybrids have been specifically designed for London, taking inspiration from the classic and iconic red double-decker Routemaster bus. Unlike the old Routemasters, it has to conform to much stricter emissions standards. The new hybrid emitted only 640 g/km of carbon dioxide, less than half of a standard diesel bus’s emissions (1295 g/km).

In addition to having lower emissions, Transport for London (TfL) says the bus is 40% more fuel efficient than a standard diesel-powered double decker. The hybrid is even quieter, reducing overall noise on the streets.

All Aboard (Beta Version)

London Mayor Boris Johnson spoke enthusiastically about the latest addition to London’s public transit network at the launch, also according to Business Green:

“Christmas has arrived early in the form of this revolutionary new bus whose gleaming coat of red paint and sinuous curves will brighten the day of all who see it humming along our great city’s streets. It is the latest, greatest masterpiece of British engineering and design, and I am certain it will become a much-loved and iconic vehicle akin to the legendary Routemaster from which it draws so much inspiration.”

Passenger trials start in February 2012, with 8 of the new hybrids serving route 38 (Victoria to Hackney, for anyone who’ll be in the London area next year and wants to take a ride). If the passenger trials go well, plans are under way for more of the buses to serve additional routes.

If you’ll be in London after February and have any desire to check out one of these new hybrids, let us know how it goes. Or just chime in below, regardless of where you are, and let us know what you think of the hybrids.

This is the kind of story that illustrates perfectly the beauty of solar power and alternative energy in general. The Red Cross is testing solar power for its pop-up hospitals in emergency areas where there is not enough diesel fuel to keep generators working around the clock.

According to this Globe and Mail report, solar energy is already the primary energy source in several medical facilities in Haiti and Africa. The initiative has been made possible with donations from non-profit organizations such as the Clinton Foundation and the Washington, D.C.-based Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF).

According to the Red Cross director of emergencies and recovery, Hossam Elsharkawi, solar power technology is not 100 per cent reliable yet, but it’s not far from getting there. He said solar power is firmly in the organization’s agenda.

Pop-up hospitals are inflatable tents that can be erected in 20 minutes with all the medical paraphernalia that goes with it. Operating rooms can be set up in less than 12 hours. Mr. Elsharkawi said technology related to emergency field hospital is constantly evolving and pop-up hospitals represent the cutting edge.

Post-earthquake Haiti highlighted the importance of alternative energy sources in hospitals where health professionals simply cannot afford to have a power outage.

The solar power systems being used consist of solar panels to harness energy and deep cycle batteries for storage. The systems provide electricity for lighting, equipment, refrigerators, computers and satellite communications systems, among others.

SELF recently made available online a case study about its successful installation of 20 kilowatts of PV systems to provide electricity to the Thomonde Hospital in Haiti. The system uses 126 PV modules and 48 Trojan batteries to power the hospital 24 hours a day.

Canada says it is withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, four years after saying it did not intend to meet its annual commitments.

The protocol "does not represent a way forward for Canada" and would have forced the country to take "radical and irresponsible choices," Environment Minister Pete Kent said Monday.

The long-expected legal move makes Canada to first nation officially to pull out of the global climate and emissions treaty, the BBC reported.

"Kyoto, for Canada, is in the past, and as such we are invoking our legal right to withdraw from Kyoto," Kent said, adding he would be formally advising the United Nations of his country's intention to pull out.

Adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997, the protocol is aimed at addressing global warming.

The cost of meeting Canada's obligations under Kyoto would be $13.6 billion, Kent said.

"That's $1,600 from every Canadian family -- that's the Kyoto cost to Canadians, that was the legacy of an incompetent liberal government," the Conservative minister said.
