Classified advertising is a form of advertising which is particularly common in newspapers, online and other periodicals which may be sold or distributed free of charge. Advertisements in a newspaper are typically short, as they are charged for by the line, and one newspaper column wide.

Publications printing news or other information often have sections of classified advertisements; there are also publications which contain only advertisements. The advertisements are grouped into categories or classes such as "for sale—telephones", "wanted—kitchen appliances", and "services—plumbing", hence the term "classified".

Classified advertisements are much cheaper than larger display advertisements used by businesses, and are therefore normally used by businesses with smaller advertising budgets, or by private individuals.

Food Stories: Namkeen Gosht

My mother used to make the most delicious Namkeen Gosht, but only once a year at Eid-ul-Azha, hence it was truly an Eid-to-Eid fare. I begged and pleaded but Ammi always said, 'Bakra Eid is just around the corner.'

Protests of 'Ammi it’s six months away!' was always met with a promise of 'I’ll make it tomorrow', and tomorrow always came annually at Bakra Eid.

It is a wonderful thing how precious memories and delicious food stay linked together in our minds. I'm sure everyone of us has wonderful memories from yesteryears, when parents and grandparents indulged us with food pampering; where the main ingredients was a bucketload of TLC.

Namkeen Gosht is a meat delight hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its adjoining regions; Afghanistan, the tribal belt and Central Asia, where dishes similar to our local Namkeen Gosht are still enjoyed today.

This meat fare is a favourite amongst the mountain people, where the consumption of meat is a way of combating the rigorous terrain of the region; staying strong and warm. Its tender melt in the mouth texture, because of its slow cooking and minimum use of ingredients makes it an all-time favourite amongst meat lovers.

What makes Namkeen Gosht such a hit?

Salt, ginger and pepper are the main ingredients, hence the flavour and tender bite of the meat, generally cooked after being freshly slaughtered, is not lost in a multitude of spices and vegetables, maintaining its subtle flavour.

In the city of Peshawar, and its surrounding areas, meat is king at meal times. Historically speaking, lamb and goat meat (mutton) has always been the favoured meat of South Asia, Middle East, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean.

Maybe it was the availability or size that made it an animal of choice to be hunted as a quick and easy dinner, or the fact that goat or lamb meat is extremely tender and juicy.

The book Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors has a fabulous tale of the South Asian cuisine and its evolution:

'At a garden party at Khyber in the 1920s, a British civil servant sampled the sort of [goat] kababs Babar would have eaten in the early 16th century. The local Afridis, a warlike nomadic mountain people, had invited the British to watch a display of guns, fireworks, and an exhibition of how they attack in enemy’s position. An old Afridi came up and offered a lump of sheep’s flesh freshly roasted. These had to be pulled off and eaten with fingers.'

It is believed that the ruling Mughal’s hearty appetite for beef, lamb and goat clashed with the dietary habits of many of their subjects in the subcontinent. But the mountain people of Khyber were used to the hearty meat-based diet of the nomadic shepherds of the region. The warrior nature of the Pukhtuns, Mongols (the ancestors of the Mughals) and others in the mountainous region encouraged consumption of the undomesticated animal, and vegetarianism was considered the diet of the people of the plains.

Food historian Lizzie Collingham says:

'The consumption of meat was associated with strength and valour. It was considered that environmental essences contained in the soil were transferred from plants and then into herbivores, which in turn were eaten by carnivores. Each transference created a more powerful distillation of essences. Meat was thus the most intense of foods.'

How did the traditional Namkeen Gosht come to be?

My research pointed me to the land of the Pukhtuns. The dish is believed to be the ancestor of the karahi gosht, since tomato and green chillie are not indigenous to the region, but black pepper has been indigenous to southern India for thousands of years and travelled to the mountains of the Pukhtuns; with conquerors, explorers and travelers making it the spice of choice inNamkeen Gosht. From the north, the delicious Namkeen Gosht travelled to the Punjab, where the people of the plains started adding green chillies to it.

Namkeen Gosht is a deliciously rustic meat dish. Traditionally, small cubes of lamb or goat are cooked in ginger, salt, black pepper and/or green chillie, and preferably animal fat. The fresh meat provides the fat base for cooking, and it is most sumptuous when served with a side of hot naan and chopped onions.

My two favourites every Eid-ul-Azha were the Namkeen Gosht my mother made and the special karahi gosht made by my father. Oddly enough, I never asked Ammi for the recipe of Namkeen Gosht, but instead got it from my friend Noreen, who recently made the same for a ladies lunch. My first bite transported me 30 years back in time. Here is the recipe, from my kitchen to yours:

Ingredients

1/4 to 1/2 tsp. black pepper powder
2 lbs goat leg, cut in small cubes
1 ½ to 2 tbsp. freshly chopped ginger
½ to 1 freshly diced tomato
4 to 5 green chillies slit lengthwise, (optional, but preferable, this gives it a real kick)
Salt to taste
Oil ¼ to ½ cup, but with freshly slaughtered meat the animal fat should suffice

Method

Heat oil in heavy-lidded wok. Fry green chillies and ginger for a minute, adding meat, salt, tomato and black pepper, stir on high heat for a few minutes until the heat causes the meat to release its juice.

Seal pot with lid and simmer on low to medium heat for a few minutes, turning the heat to low and cooking until meat is tender and falling off the bone.

The meat juices gradually steam and evaporate, sealing in the juices, and slow cooking to perfection. Avoid adding water if possible, but if need arises, add a little to complete the cooking process.

Serve with naan, lemon wedges and sliced onions.

During a brief Q & A session, a US businessman asked the prime minister why the Pakistani currency continued to fall. Mr Sharif asked the finance minister to respond and he assured the prospective investors that the government had already taken steps to arrest the decline.
“And very soon, the rupee will stabilise at less than 100 to a dollar,” Mr Dar said.
Earlier in his address to the US-Pakistan Business Council, the prime minister urged them to invest in Pakistan.
“I know that as business entrepreneurs you are always on the look-out for new markets and sectors for investment,” he said. “I am here to tell you how and why Pakistan is that new and emerging place, to do business with and invest in.” Mr Sharif reminded the businessmen that in a recent report the council had described “Pakistan as a giant you haven’t considered” for investment.

$25m flows out of country daily: SBP governor

The State Bank of Pakistan made a startling disclosure before a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that $25 million in foreign currency was illegally flowing out of the country each day from airports and that was perhaps one major reason for the recent battering of the rupee.
“About $25 million foreign exchange goes out every day from Quetta, Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi airports and we are signing an MOU with the Federal Investigation Agency to check suitcases to control this and plug holes,” SBP Governor Dr Yasin Anwar told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance.
Mr Anwar made the statement when senators raised questions about the government’s policy to restore people’s confidence in the rupee that had been losing its value for several weeks, leading to excessive dollarisation. “Even property dealers and big stores are doing business in dollars,” said Senator Haji Adeel of ANP.
At the committee meeting presided over by Senator Nasrin Jalil of MQM, Usman Saifullah Khan and Sughra Imam of PPP wanted to know the reason behind Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent meeting with Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros who they alleged was one of the leading global currency speculators and had played havoc with Southeast Asian economies in the 1990s. “We should also know who advised the prime minister for this meeting,” Senator Saifullah said.
The official response was that Mr Soros had no presence in Pakistan’s currency market but he had made some philanthropist contributions and his meeting with the prime minister was part of an interaction with leading international investors.
Senators criticised the government’s priorities, particularly providing $5 billion to IPPs instead of using the amount for development of hydropower projects like Bhasha dam, Dassu dam and Neelum Jhelum project where only nominal allocations were being made.
Secretary Finance Dr Waqar Masood Khan described the perception of dollarisation as baseless and said there was no evidence to prove that payments were made in foreign currency. He said the government was working to synchronise the anti-money laundering law with anti-terrorism financing to comply with international standards.
The SBP chief said economic policies were always designed for longer-term objectives and should not be assessed on the basis of short-term problems. He said the central bank was not a law-enforcement agency which could take direct action. But, he pointed out that its vigilance on market moves had led in the past to FIA’s actions against Khanani & Kalia and Zarco Exchange.
The flight of capital has always been a major pressure on foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate but such outflows were previously estimated at between $5-10 million a day. The revelation by SBP governor puts the amount of outflows by illegal means at a staggering $750 million a month or $9 billion a year — almost equivalent to the country’s total foreign exchange reserves.
Dr Anwar did not agree that the recent steep fall in the value of the rupee to Rs110 against the dollar was a regular feature because of withdrawal from foreign currency accounts. He said the rupee had touched its lowest point only for two minutes during which only $11.3 million was misappropriated. He said he had already held a meeting with banks and punishments had been decided against banks involved in the inappropriate activity.
He said the government and the central bank were being criticised for a single day fall in the value of the rupee but the critics did not appreciate the fact that the SBP managed the foreign exchange position from March to June, when a major transition was taking place from one political government to the interim government and to a new elected government despite predictions of crisis and defaults by major commentators.
He said the government’s decision to reach a bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was taken at a suitable time because of outstanding foreign repayments of $6.6 billion when major multilateral lenders like the World Bank and the Asian Development Banks had stopped extending loans for development. This led to improved market sentiments and positive comments from international rating agencies.
He said parliamentarians should not compare the handling of exchange rate issue with India where 75 per cent banks were state-run, while in Pakistan 80 per cent banking was in the private sector.
As senators criticised the economic team for allowing the IMF to take micro-level decisions, both the secretary finance and the central bank governor said daily, weekly and monthly reporting of economic data to IMF was a prerequisite for all member countries but this compliance became strict when a nation adopted to have an IMF programme which was neither unusual nor a Pakistan specific condition.
Senator Sughra Imam expressed concern that policy-makers did not offer any incentive to people for keeping rupee deposits in banks and as a result savings were being diverted to foreign currency accounts for the sake of profits because of declining exchange rate. She asked why foreign exchange deposits were not subjected to taxes like the rupee accounts. “They are earning profits just by holding dollars in their accounts.”
UNCERTAIN INFLOWS: The senators criticised the government for banking on uncertain foreign exchange inflows through auction of 3G telecom licences, PTCL proceeds from Etisalat and coalition support fund (CSF) from the US which had not materialised over the past four years.
Secretary Waqar Masood said appointments to key positions in Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had been made and soon the matter would be pushed forward. He said Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had taken up the issue of PTCL proceeds with Etisalat.
He said out of $1.4 billion CSF inflows expected this year, about $325 million would be disbursed before Oct 15, although these were earlier expected in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

An Embedded Posts feature being tested out at CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, PEOPLE and Mashable websites lets Facebook members broadcast posts in real-time to broader online audiences.

"We are beginning to roll out Embedded Posts to make it possible for people to bring the most compelling, timely public posts from Facebook to the rest of the Web," Facebook software engineers Dave Capra and Ray He said in a blog post.

"When embedded, posts can include pictures, videos, hashtags and other content," they continued. "People can also like and share the post directly from the embed."

Facebook posts that people allow to be shared publicly can be fired off to blogs or selected outside websites, with the list of venues to grow quickly, according to the engineers.

Examples given by Facebook included an official British Monarchy Page publishing a picture of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their newborn son.

"Every day, public figures, journalists and millions of regular people share their thoughts on what's happening around the world on Facebook publicly," Capra and He said. "Many journalists post detailed commentary about world events from their Facebook timeline."

The Twitter-style feature is being added as California-based Facebook works to expand its presence on the Internet and its appeal to members increasingly accessing the Internet on the go with smartphones or tablets.

Kerry hopes Pakistan drone strikes to end 'very soon'

US Secretary of State John Kerry told Pakistanis on Thursday he hoped US drone strikes in their nation would end “very, very soon,” a message meant to ease anti-American resentment in the strategic country.
After meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Kerry said they had agreed to re-establish a “full partnership”, hoping to end years of acrimony over the drone strikes and other grievances including the May 2011 US raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
In a television interview later, Kerry said of the drone strikes, “I think the program will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it.”
“I think the president has a very real timeline and we hope it's going to be very, very soon,” he told Pakistan Television, when asked whether the US had a timetable for ending drone strikes aimed at militants in Pakistan.
Kerry's comments went further than those of President Barack Obama, who said in a May 23 speech that the need for drone strikes would decrease in “the Afghan war theater” as US troops withdraw by the end of 2014.
But Obama did not speak of ending drone strikes entirely and his speech offered a detailed justification for the tactic “against terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people, and when there are no other governments capable of effectively addressing the threat.”
US drone missiles have targeted areas near the Afghan border, including North Waziristan, the main stronghold for various militant groups aligned with al Qaeda and the Taliban, since 2004.
Pakistanis have been angered by reports of civilian casualties and what they see as an abuse of their sovereignty.
US drone strikes in Pakistan have fallen significantly over the past 2 1/2 years, totaling 17 so far this year, versus 48 in all of 2012 and 73 in 2011, according to a tally kept by the New America Foundation.
'We are asking them to stop it' It was unclear if, in their lengthy face-to-face talks, Sharif asked Kerry to halt the drone attacks.
When asked whether Pakistan wanted the United States to curtail the strikes, his foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj Aziz, told reporters, “We are asking them to stop it, not just curtail it.”
Besides the drones and the killing of bin Laden in 2011, relations have been strained by Pakistan's support for Taliban insurgents fighting Western troops in Afghanistan as well as by a Nato air attack in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed.
“I want to emphasise the relationship is not defined simply by the threats we face, it is not only a relationship about combating terrorism, it is about supporting the people of Pakistan, particularly helping at this critical moment for Pakistan's economic revival,” Kerry told reporters.
A new government in Pakistan and a new secretary of state in Washington have increased hopes the two sides can allay their grievances, something both hope to gain from, with Pakistan's economy badly needing support and the United States aiming to withdraw the bulk of its troops from Afghanistan next year.
Kerry, who as a senator sponsored legislation to provide $7 billion in assistance to Pakistan over five years, said he had invited Sharif to visit the United States, Pakistan's biggest donor, for talks with Obama.
“What was important today was that there was a determination ... to move this relationship to the full partnership that it ought to be, and to find the ways to deal with individual issues that have been irritants,” he said.
'Behind the bonhomie, trouble lurks'
Michael Kugelman, an analyst at the Woodrow Wilson International Center think tank, said he believed Washington had no intention of ending drone strikes in Pakistan before the end of 2014, when it pulls troops out of neighboring Afghanistan.
Kugelman said while the rhetoric had been toned down, the drones dispute and a proposal by Sharif for peace talks with the Pakistani branch of the Taliban would fuel tensions.
Kugelman said talks with the Pakistani Taliban, a loose alliance of al Qaeda-linked militants fighting to topple the Pakistan government, could threaten U.S. security interests in Afghanistan at a time when the Obama administration is trying to orchestrate an orderly withdrawal.
“Behind the bonhomie, trouble lurks,” Kugelman said in a opinion piece “Instead of depicting Kerry's Pakistan visit as a prelude to an extended period of goodwill, we should simply regard it as a respite from the tensions.”
But both sides expressed a willingness to overcome their grievances and to start afresh.
Ties have improved fractionally since last year after the two sides reached a deal to reopen land routes used to supply Western troops in Afghanistan that were cut off after the air strike in November 2011 that killed Pakistani soldiers.

PTA withdraws notification on mobile phone service shutdown

An hour after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced to suspend mobile phone service across Sindh, it has withdrawn the notification to this effect .

The decision was made on the eve of Pakistan’s historic general elections as part of security arrangements.
The PTA had said that the services would be shut from Friday evening to Saturday 5:00 pm. It had also said that the V-fone service would also remain suspended in Sindh.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan Monday said that his party has given 80 per cent tickets to those electoral candidates who will be contesting for the first time in the coming general elections.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, he said this is beginning of a revolution in the country as the time-tested old faces, due to their corruption and bad governance, cannot bring about any change.
Khan said that party tickets have been given to those candidates who are recommended by local chapters of the party.
He said others are resorting to just sloganeering but his party has given around 35 per cent party tickets to those who are under 40 years of age. The PTI chief hoped that youth cadre of the party will bring about a massive change in the country.
He said that his party has ended the traditional politics of dynasty and revived politics of ideology in Pakistan. “By holding intra-party polls, we have questioned the very existence of family ltd parties,” he added.
His party, Khan said that after coming into power will eradicate corruption and will introduce reforms in the institutions.
The PTI chief also appealed to the nation to donate in his party’s “Pakistan fund” if they really want to bring about the change. “Candidates who spend 10 million rupees to come into power, make 10 times more during their rule,” he added–

Musharraf treason case: SC rejects petition for arrest

The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned hearing over the treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf until April 15, TV report.
A two-judge bench of the apex court, comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard the case against the retired general seeking his trial under Article 6 of the Constitution for imposing the state of emergency in 2007.
The court rejected the request seeking the arrest of the former military ruler.
Musharraf did not personally appear in court and was represented by Advocate Ahmed Raza Kasuri.
Kasuri sought from the court six weeks’ time from Musharraf to submit his response and said that Musharraf would reply to every point raised against him adding that certain hidden names would be revealed in the response.
The bench replied that it did not mind the pandora box to be opened and granted six days’ time to submit his response, adjourning the hearing until April 15.
No one representing the federal government was present during the hearing.
Talking to media personnel prior to the hearing, Attorney General of Pakistan (AG) Irfan Qadir said that he would perform his duties according to the constitution during the case.
Musharraf’s Facebook account quoted him as saying that: “I have directed my panel of eminent lawyers to forcefully represent me in the Supreme Court of Pakistan tomorrow. These cases do not frighten me and I will fight all the cases in the court of law!”
Earlier on Monday, the bench had directed Musharraf to appear before it today (on Tuesday) to face charges of high treason and also barred him from leaving the country.

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) – the party with the mandate of Sindh province’s urban population – on Monday unveiled its electoral manifesto for the May 11 general election.
The party vows to resolve matters relating to the local government system upon assuming powers. The issue had played a decisive role in the separation of the coalition partners – MQM and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) – both in Sindh and at the centre in February.
Speaking at the launching ceremony of the manifesto, titled “empowering the people,” Deputy Convener of the MQM’s Rabita (coordination) Committee Dr Farooq Sattar said that his party will resolve the longstanding issue of the local government system if it assumes powers in the upcoming polls.
The manifesto mainly focuses on education, health and energy.
Sattar said the MQM government would pay extra attention on human progress, adding that the incumbent dual educational standards will be eradicated. “Standard of the Urdu-medium government schools will be raised up to the English-medium Schools and the educational budget will be increased,” he said.
The MQM leader said that health will be included as a mandatory right of the citizens in the social sector, adding that constitutional amendments will be carried out in this regard.
He said that steps will be taken for economic progress and the prices of petroleum products, electricity and natural gas will be reduced to overcome poverty and inflation.
The ‘indirect taxes’ will be stopped for that purpose, said Sattar.
He said that landowners and feudal lords will be brought into the national tax net and cooperative farming will be promoted and encouraged in the country.
“A national gas policy will be formulated in order to resolve the prevailing energy crises in the country…..priorities will be set for that,” said the MQM leader.

Nadra develops $1.5m software for voters abroad

In compliance with an order of the Supreme Court, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has devised a software to help 4.5 million overseas Pakistanis to cast their votes in the coming general elections.
The $1.5 million software will help overseas Pakistanis in 15 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia, UAE, France and Australia, to vote at 150 polling stations. However, approval of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be required to prepare required legislation.
Nadra chairman Tariq Malik said at a news conference that a detailed briefing would be given to ECP on the software on Monday and if the ECP approved it, a briefing would be arranged for the Supreme Court.
The chairman said that almost 70 per cent of overseas Pakistanis were living in Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries where there was a ban on political gatherings and rallies. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would have to get permission for polling process in those countries, he added.
“Permission from those countries and travel arrangements of Nadra officers have to be completed by April 5 because establishment of polling stations for e-voting will be a lengthy process. One computer, printer, thumb digitiser and secure internet connection will be required at every poling station,” he said.
Mr Malik said overseas Pakistanis would get the facility of e-voting through embassies. Polling stations will be set up in designated missions. A biometric system will also be installed in the poling stations to avoid casting of bogus votes.
On the polling day voters will have to come to the polling station. They will be required to produce machine readable passports and National Identity Cards. The process of voting will be simple and the vote will be cast in the ECP database without recording identity of the voter.
On completion of polling, the ECP will have electronic results available in its database. Constituency-wise aggregated result will be printed by the ECP and faxed to returning officers for inclusion in preliminary results. “Although software appears to be safe, it has never been used in Pakistan, so Nadra will suggest that polling for overseas Pakistanis should be arranged two or three days prior to elections,” he said.
