These are the only fully decorated rooms in the house currently and while it's wonderful to be able to focus on the walls, floors and ceilings of the empty rooms (and this house does NOT disappoint in that regard!) it's also fun to see fully decorated rooms. And making it even more of a treat is to be able to see Charlotte and Bunny's work in person. Being from the hinterlands of Massachusetts, this is a rare treat!

Here is the Drawing Room as decorated by Charlotte Moss. Well, first let me say that I nearly swooned. And I rarely say things like that! Second, let me say how sad I am that my photographs of this room are not better. It's a relatively dark room, with windows only the back, which look out on the veranda, under a large awning. So, natural light being limited, my photos are a little grainy and do not do the room justice! First off, what can one say about that ceiling? Like God's own wedding cake. Consistent with EW's views that decorative detail match the room - the drawing room is the most formal, largest and the only room that boasts an elaborate treatment on the ceiling. The floor is terrazzo, under a rug, which was likely an Aubusson from France.
Here is an image showing the condition of the plasterwork before the restoration began, plus how the roses look now.

This room is so warm and inviting - I just wanted to have a seat and take it all in. That sofa looked so comfy! But, I figured all manner of bells and whistles would go off, so I just looked longingly...

The original tapestries (Brussels, 1710) were auctioned off in 1935. They have been recreated for the home. Charlotte Moss has donated the furnishings to the Edith Wharton Organization.

Moving along, we are now in the dining room - as decorated by Bunny Williams. This room, being on the corner, benefited from a much brighter light and was much easier to photograph! What I love about Bunny's design were the contemporary touches of modern art and a hand painted sisal carpet. She is quoted in the program book saying "Edith was a modern lady who never lost her traditional roots".

Another view...
Here is a photo of EW's own decor circa 1905. Bunny certainly took her cues from Edith's work here. Look closely under the table and you will see the cushion on the floor for EW's beloved dog. Bunny includes a cushion by the table (top pic) in homage.
A closeup of the table. The ornamentation in the room includes fish, birds and nuts - fitting for a dining room.
Simple, elegant and unfussy - these window treatments are extraordinary!
I don't know for sure, but my guess is that Bunny also donated the room decor to The Mount as well, as it's been there since 2002.

The Edith Wharton Organization, which manages The Mount, was facing foreclosure just a year ago. A bank restructuring and much needed donations has kept the doors open, but money is still needed to continue operations and much needed improvements. Please consider making a donation to this treasure of American Arts and Architecture.

Click here to read all my Edith Wharton posts.

Subscribe to ::Surroundings::

Edith Wharton did not write here

Despite the fact that there was both a Den that belonged to Teddy (EW's husband) and a Library for Edith, the word at The Mount is that EW did not actually do her writing in the Library. (Our gal did most in her bed, papers flying!).

The Main Floor Gallery, which I profiled yesterday, leads directly into Teddy W's Den.

The Den, where Teddy kept his office, was designed by Ogden Codman, Jr., EW's co-writer on The Decoration of Houses. While the Den is not currently "decorated", it does boast some exquisite plasterwork and a gorgeous marble fireplace with mirror and classically inspired overmantle. The doors on either side lead out to the terrace on the side of the house. The room is so bright and lovely! The door hardware was imported from France. Unfortunately, my photograph came out way more yellow than the actual walls and painting. You can actually see this painting reflected in the mirror over the fireplace.

Edith Wharton's Library sits directly under her bedroom in the rear left corner of the house. She believed that the books in a library should be the primary focus and provide a decorative element and that the book cases should be recessed into the walls, not free standing. While she has been photographed at her writing table in the library, she was most likely to write in bed and use the library for study and entertaining close friends with readings. The most exciting part of this room is that her book collection was returned to The Mount in 2006. This was the one room that was roped off - no peeking through the books! When the house was decorated a few years ago, the library was done by Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill. The rendering in the Centennial Celebration program book shows a room with significantly more furniture, so it's clear that much as been removed. Some of the pieces here may be hold-overs, however, I'm not really sure.

EW at her desk. One might expect that this magnificent, classically inspired home would have a grand staircase. However, EW believed that the transition from outside to inside should be as smooth and easy as possible.

This is the forcourt space - a walled outdoor space that feels indoors when one passes through the main gate.
In through the front door...

And into the grotto-like Entrance Hall with stylized plaster work that emulated mossy walls and dripping water. The terracotta tile floor brings a definative Italianate feel to this space. The arched ceiling is simple and elegant, as is the softly glowing color palette.
Straight in front of the door is a statue of Pan by the sculptor Frederick MacMonnies. This bronze sits on the original fountain in the Entrance Hall. There's an excellent article here on this sculpture and other works at The Mount.

Through the double French doors to the right is the main staircase of the home.

The lantern lighting continues the outdoor feel...The Main Staircase begins quite simply and becomes more elegant as one ascends. During the restoration and decorating of some of the public spaces, designer Libby Cameron was selected to do the Main Staircase. Note that the ground floor landing and first level of the stair is relatively simple, with horizontal panels painted a sunny yellow. However, the sassy leopard print carpeting on the stair hints at the extravagance to come!

We are now on the Main Floor Staircase landing and you will see that the wall moldings, the lighting and other details are now significantly more formal. Here is a view through the arched door that separates the working areas of the Main Floor (Butler's Pantry, service stair case that is adjacent to the Main Stair, etc.) You can see through the Main Stair landing into the formal Main Gallery. And the glorious main Gallery, designed recently by Geoffrey Bradfield. Also based on Gallery spaces EW had seen in Italy, this is a space that allows access to all the main rooms on the Main Floor as well as provides excellent cross ventilation from front to rear of the house.

The terrazo and marble floor were polished to a high shine. The room straight ahead was Teddy Wharton's Den and beyond that is the terrace on the side of the house.

How glorious is this light fixture?A genteel place to rest.
And an image of the Gallery from EW's day. Continuing in the Italian style, EW used this space as a display for her art and objets collected from her world travels. Note the crystal chandelier. The design of the house was based on the precepts she and Codman set forth in their book - those of a return to classical architectural virtues of harmony, proportion and symmetry. While Mrs. Wharton did consult with architects and landscape designers, she was the guiding force behind every detail of the house. In photographs, the mansion looks quite large, but in person, it has a very human scale. It was a time when many wealthy New Yorkers were building their summer "cottages" in Newport, RI - such as The Breakers and The Elms. Houses built on a grand scale - mini Versailles and American-ized European castles. The Mount was built for real living.

Originally set on 125 acres (now down to 49.5 acres), the house is set down a long winding lane. One first comes on the Georgian inspired stables, which is a beautiful building in and of itself.

The driveway winds through a naturalistic setting of lawn and wooded areas. The house eventually comes into view, snuggled comfortably into it's woodsy setting.

While most photos we see are of the garden side of the house, this view is, in fact, the front of the house. Mrs. Wharton believed that a house should naturally progress from outside to inside, drawing the visitor in slowly. (image courtesy of EdithWharton.org)

The front of the house is surrounded by a white washed stone walled courtyard into which a car or carriage would deliver guests. While she often put out that she wrote at a desk, she in fact did most of her writing in her bedroom, in the mornings, in bed. As she finished a page, she'd toss it to the floor. If she were around today, I'm convinced she be a blogger, laptop at the ready!

Don't you just love the steps built into the lawn leading down from the veranda?

A view of the left side of the rear of the house. I wanted to share some of the delicious locations and foods we ate over the weekend.

The first evening we were there, we ate at Alta Restaurant & Wine Bar right in Lenox Center. By the way - don't blink or you'll miss the center. It's very tiny! I wanted to take photos of the restaurant, but didn't want to disturb other diners, so have to be satisfied with the images on their website. It was raining that evening (of course, it's been raining a lot here recently!), and the covered porch seating was delightful! The food was quite tasty, including a goat cheese and walnut salad, grilled steak and fries. My friend had the duck and reported that it was quite nice. We ordered wine by the glass and even so, we were shown the bottle and offered a taste prior to making the commitment. A nice touch.

On Friday, we visited Edith Wharton's home and enjoyed a lovely luncheon on the back veranda under a striped awning, overlooking the gardens. I had the delicious tarragon chicken salad on a ciabatta roll with a side of carrot salad and iced coffee while my friend Rob had quiche and lemonade. Tasty! By the way, take note of the herringbone pattern of the brick floor - loved it!

The big draw of Lenox and the Berkshires is, of course, Tanglewood! We attended concerts on Friday and Saturday night, dining on the lawn along with thousands of others. Some folks really went all out - including silver candelabra, flowers and lots of food! This image shows the break between the Shed and the lawn seats. At $16, the lawn is a great deal!

I would highly suggest the use of the classic little red wagon as both mode of transporting picnic baskets, chairs and food. Plus, it made for an excellent dinner table! For our picnic al fresco, I borrowed a red mini-check tablecloth and napkins from my mother, which I made for her several years ago and did a little shopping at The Christmas Tree shops for some inexpensive dishes, glassware and utensils. I spent less than $20 for the baskets, melamine lobster plates, plastic tumblers (stemmed glasses are too likely to spill!), silverware and a candle under glass. It made everything so easy (and light!). We dined on baguettes, different cheeses and crackers, apples and wine. Yum! What is it about eating outdoors that makes everything seem so tasty!
Here was the table of one of our neighbors. It got a lot of attention from photographers. I loved the sunflowers in a vase. Later in the evening, they had a couple of candles going.
The last day we went out for brunch and found ourselves at the Haven Cafe & Bakery. It's a casual place, bustling with patrons and servers.

I forgot to photograph our food prior to eating it, but as you can tell, it was tasty! I had croissant french toast with scrambled eggs (which were cold, unfortunately) and Rob had eggs benedict and hash browns. Even with the cold eggs, yum!
I really enjoyed the casual ambiance and simple decor of the restarant. The highlight of the trip was clearly the day spent at The Mount, Edith Wharton's summer home. It's hard to know where to focus and I took nearly 90 photos! As a matter of fact, I kept filling up my storage card (huge photos!) and had to keep deleting as I went. I think what I ended up with were the best images of this glorious property. The current owners, The Edith Wharton Restoration, purchased the estate in 1980, but it wasn't until 1997 that they were able to start the extensive work necessary to return the buildings and grounds back to their original glory. The work is ongoing.

I am starting with the grounds, and will then move onto the exterior of the building, followed by the remarkable interiors. The grounds of the estate have been restored to their former glory - including the drive in (which was originally designed by her niece, noted landscape architect Beatrix Farrand), walking trails and natural wooded areas, and most notably, the formal gardens and terraces behind the home. These formal gardens were designed by Edith Wharton herself. She based her designs on the European influences of her youth, most notably the Italian style, which suggested that the gardens should be laid out as rooms and in concert with the home and the natural landscape.

Here is the view from the veranda in the rear of the house. The steps down from the terrace transition to a series of terraced lawns leading down the hill towards the wooded areas and looking out towards the mountains.

Looking left down the limestone "hallway", one takes in the French inspired flower garden.
A series of planting beds surrounds a small pool with Edith Wharton's dolphin fountain.

And looking back towards the house. While this garden was quite lovely, I was completely entranced by the Italiante garden to the left of the house. The color palette is entirely white (astilbe) and green. So simple, lush and classic! Edith installed this garden with the proceeds from her novel "The House of Mirth". Much of this garden had to be restored or replaced in the renovation - worth every penny! I didn't want to leave.

The rock-pile fountain (this is a reconstructed version of the original) is as charming as the formal dolphin fountain in the French garden.
If you're a lover of symmetry (as I am), this is just so satisfying.

The stone arches and pergola on the far side of the garden offer a lovely respite from the sun's heat.On the outside looking in (note the view of the house through the arch).
A view from above.
And back towards the house.
The garden restoration projects began in the early 2000's. I spent a lovely few hours yesterday afternoon at Edith Wharton's house, and am very excited to do some in depth posts about this amazing estate, that just one year ago was facing foreclosure! What a comeback story!

I spent last evening at Tanglewood for the opening of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer season. James Levine conducted Tchaikovksy. In between raindrops, we had a lovely candlelit picnic on the lawn. Delish!

Today, we're off for a visit to the Norman Rockwell museum, whose work I've always loved! Finished pages scattered to the floor for a maid to pick up and keep organized. I'm totally convinced that Edith would be a blogger were she around today. Laptop at the ready, posts flying into the wind. Here is a photo I took today while I toured Edith's home in Lenox, Massachusetts, known as The Mount. Gorgeous and inspiring! More photos to come of the grounds and interiors. I leave you with these. Am off to Tanglewood for a BSO concert tonight! Hopefully, weather permitting, I'll be able to show photos of a picnic on the lawn tht I have planned, so stay tuned!

Eating on the veranda, overlooking the stepped terraces and the Berkshire mountains.

photos by Linda Merrill for ::Surroundings::

Subscribe to ::Surroundings::

Burlap and Grainsack - Cheap Chic or Faux Humility?

This Dan Marty settee in burlap retails for $5,450.

When I was in middle school, the hot "must wear" clothes were Levi's jeans, Fair Isle sweaters and Izod shirts (collar up, of course!) - and I lived in a town listed in the Preppy Hand Book, so the pressure was on! Of course, I was dying to go along with the crowd and wanted all these must have brands. My family was going through tight times financially during those years and the budget did not include these "label" prices. My mother had a friend in the clothing industry who told her that Levi-Strauss made Sears Roebuck jeans - so guess which I wore. According to Mom - they were the same thing. NOT!

Okay, so fast forward a few years and I've grown into an adult who generally shuns fads and labels. I don't want brands where I have to pay for the privilege of promoting their label (think Louis Vuitton) and I'm very quick to tire of seeing the same thing over and over (think coral, think zebra rugs, think "Keep Calm and Carry On"). No thanks.

And what's the purpose of these "anti-design-establishment" rantings? I've been contemplating the whole grainsack and burlap fad recently - this new/old trend is everywhere. And, for the most part, is certainly a very attractive trend. But, I wonder... why is this suddenly trendy? Why burlap and why now?

A recent article by David A. Keeps for the LA times (which I read in the Providence Journal) making the syndication rounds posits "Burlap upholstery proclaims an era of faux humility". Is part of the current "in" state of burlap and grain sack due, in part, to the current economy and a desire to "dress down"? And, if that's true in some cases, is this a genuine desire to dress down, or only "look" dressed down? I know of designers whose clients have put projects on hold because they think a big new design project will look bad. I know of an antiques dealer who was asked to deliver an expensive piece in a plain truck - the decor version of the plain brown wrapper. Burlap is, of course, the quintessential plain brown wrapper.

So, do you like burlap and grain sack for its vintage-y feel or does it make you feel like you're keeping it real?

Los Angeles Times / KEN HIVELY

The armchair, above, for sale at Colcha in Venice, Calif., has reclaimed wood legs and is upholstered in European feed-sack fabric; it goes for $1,600. Keeping things real, these look to have been upholstered by someone with all thumbs and dangerous access to a staple gun. Horrific on so many levels! Note that not only is the day bed filled with grain sack pillows, but the standing lamp on the right also has a burlap shade.

The dining room of designer Abby Rizor's 1920s Florida house was originally a porch. Seriously. It's upholstery weight fabric that is woven to look like a printed burlap with red stripes. I didn't manage to take a photo, but the price is likely a few thousand dollars. Huh?

Of course, burlap can be a very cost effective textile. Just check out Rhoda at Southern Hospitality's posts on how she upholstered the back of a cabinet with a bolt of the stuff:

On Etsy, you can purchase very price effective grain sacks at Antique Linen Store for around $44.00.
And this little flea market find footstool has been covered in about 88 cents worth of burlap, with mini-ruffle. From Country Living. A very easy DIY project for someone who can sew.

OK - so, we've seen high end uses of burlap and grain sack as well as more moderately priced examples. While this is a trend I'm not likely to jump on board with simply because we're seeing it everywhere, I do see the appeal to others. But honestly? I see it only on the low end. Some of the truly antique grain sacks may have value for their provenance but I still can't wrap my head around paying high end prices for what was made to be cheap goods to transport grain and flour.

Edited to add - Alex from The Real Housewives of New York. As I'd mentioned before, I've been working out of the Trianon Antiques showroom in the Boston Design Center this week, while owners Diana and Scott Cooper are in France. Unfortunately, the internet connection is s-l-o-w... zzzz...zz.. So it's taken me much longer to do much of anything and therefor I haven't been able to post as much as I'd hoped! I have several posts going around in my head - I just need the time and the speedier internet connection to get them out!!

I've been meaning to get this post done for a couple of weeks. I spent a weekend at the beginning of the month with members of my business roundtable group at a house in Falmouth Heights, Massachusetts. Falmouth is on Cape Cod (I live over the bridge, about a half hour north) and looks towards Martha's Vineyard across the water. The weekend we were there was one of the few nice days we've had all season! So, I hope you enjoy the tour of this quintessential New England beach town as much (or nearly so!) as I did being there!
These houses are situated on the hill overlooking the bay, across from Martha's Vineyard - all have an amazing view! Have a great weekend and stay tuned next week. We have a great pair of guests on The Skirted Roundtable (I can't wait to reveal who they are!!) and I'll be spending the end of the week out in the Berkshires, attending two concerts at Tanglewood. I'll be dining al fresco on the lawn, so stay tuned for posts on the perfect lawn picnic out under the stars. * I'll also be visiting Edith Wharton's home The Mount, and doing who knows what else!

* unless it rains, which is all it's doing these days!

Have a great weekend!!!

Subscribe to ::Surroundings::

The Skirted Roundtable - Money and Criticism, not necessarily in that order

This week on The Skirted Roundtable - Joni, Megan and I chatted about the real cost of interior design and what to expect when working with a professional designer - making sense of the dollars. I started poking through a book they have on their coffee table on interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux and was instantly captivated by the unabashedly high end, yet witty designs. The book. published in 1997, showcases some of his bigger projects between the years of 1985, when he began taking work in New York, and the mid-90's. Mr. Molyneux was born in Santiago, Chile and spent a childhood surrounded by a mixture of British and indigenous influences. His maternal grandfather was British, who got a little lost on his worldwide grand tour and ended up in Santiago, where he fell in love with a beautiful local girl. His parents were well-traveled and so was he. He attended a "veddy British" boarding school in Santiago that, as the book says, "was like a little British colony...". It is due to these experiences that Mr. Molyneux attributes his attraction to English design: paneled walls, Regency furniture, and "the patina of age and elegance that develops out of being rooted in one pace for generations". In 1946, he enrolled in the architecture program at the Catholic University of Santiago and was immediately immersed in the disciplines of La Corbusian modernism and all things Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius. There was no study of classical architecture - as if the field began only in the 20th century. While he loved what he was learning, he instinctively knew that he was missing out as well, so enrolled at the Ecole des Beauxs-Arts in Paris - where he nearly failed his initial project assignment of designing an orangerie. He had to learn an entirely new vocabulary of architectural design - the work of the ancient Egyptians, Andrea Palladio and even Jacques Ange Gabriel, designer of Le Petit Trianon, which Mr. Molyneux feels is one of the most "gracefully precise" buildings ever designed (and who could argue with that!). Over the next several years, Mr. Molyneux traveled back and forth between his classical training in Paris and the modern aesthetic espoused at University in Santiago. Even in Paris, the social unrest of the late 60's provided a certain push back against the old school classics espoused by the Beaux-Arts. Upon graduation, he traveled extensively throughout North and South America, Africa, Russian and, of course, Europe. He opened is own design practice in Santiago in the early 70's and quickly became a recognized and lauded designer. However, due, in part to the social unrest and military coup in 1973, work was scarce in Santiago, so he moved his business to Buenes Aires, which he found to be more cosmopolitan, and more classical inspired design wise. He remained there for the next ten years until the lure of New York City overtook him. He developed a client base in NY and traveled back and forth until 1987, when he moved there permenently. He quickly came to the attention of the Architectural Digest editors and is on their AD100 list. He is now a US citizen and is still practicing in New York.

What attracted me to the work showcased in this now out of print book, Molyneux by Michael Frank, was not the OTT glitz and glamour of his spaces, but the quieter moments and the whimsy. His use of trompe l'oiel (a personal favorite of mine) is both beautiful and fun. He views trompe l'oeil not as something fake, but as a way of freeing oneself from the inherent restrictions of built architectural details. As he said "With trompe l'oeil, you can create spaces, moods, shapes. It's not fake. That's what people usually say, and it's wrong. Trompe l'oeil is a fantasy that provokes reality". Love that!

Take a close look at the book jacket art below. This is called the Palladian Dog House, which he designed for a Kips Bay showhouse. His client? His beloved Scottie Max, whom he described as having a "noble, Palladian personality". The structure was sized for Max - at 3' square, with a portico in front with Corinthian columns and a pediment. Max's coat of arms (crossed bones) was also prominent. The house was made of plywood, except for the real marble floor - which was perfect as it was a "summer house". Could you just die??? The rest is a tromp l'eoil masterpiece!

The living room below includes a tromp l'oeil depicting a seascape and "paneled" doors opening up to it. There's something so easy about this room - despite the immense work this painting represents.

Mr. Molyneux's own houses were showcased in the book as well. I am so in love with the Michelangelo inspires pillows on this bed! It's so unexpected and lively! And steal-able. While these pillows were likely hand painted. one could also print the art onto transfer paper and apply to a plain silk.... hmm... I feel a DIY project coming on!!

btw - have I mentioned that I shot photos from this book as I don't have access to a scanner today? So, my apologies for the less than perfect images!

This next space was a New York pied-a-terre for the children of a well known restranteur. They were looking for something "young, light-hearted and European". The architectural details in the living room were left as is - as they are clearly very formal and balanced - while the furnishings and surfaces are significantly more casual and almost outdoorsy. For those who find symmetry boring, this is not your space - no question! Both sides of the room are nearly mirror images, however, I fell this works to achieve a peaceful space amid the hustle and bustle of the big city.

The image below is the master bedroom in the Molyneux country home in Western, Mass. How cozy! The linen, from Portugal, was selected because he felt that the floral pattern lent the space a wonderful country feel. How true - without being cloying, or "horsey"! Note that the headboard is very similar to the one in their New York home with the pillows shown above. Clearly a signature style!

I find this little bedroom vignette to be quite charming. The shade of blue is just lovely and I adore the toss pillows - it's hard to tell in the photo but they almost look like they are made from an organdy as there seems to be a translucent quality about them. The headboard fabric, interestingly enough, was also used in another of his projects - on both a chair and another headboard of the same style. I'm fairly certain that it's not the same headboard as the pattern placement is different.

Mr. Molyneux has been a frequent decorator showhouse participant. This gorgeous dining room (in shades of blueberry blue and parchment that I just adore!) was for the 1988 Kips Bay Decorator showhouse. The chinoiserie wall panels, painted in the 1920's by Alan Cox, were original to the room and set the stage for the design plan. Mr. Molyneux had their gold and silver- leafing restored as well (which unfortunately can't be seen in the photo - but must have been magnificent!) The window treatment fabric silk was first manufactured in the 1920s and had enough silver in it to relate to the silver-leaf on the walls. The carpet - of his design - had a decided "chinoiserie mood". He also incorporated some Chinese blue urns from his own collection, but in a departure, selected the gothic revival dining chairs for their architectural detail. As a final whimsical note, Mr. Molyneux wrote out name cards to "John, Mary, Susan and Howard" rather than the normally stuffy showhousey habit of making the name cards to "Sir this or Lady that". Little touches of humor and earthiness abound.

This image is the drawing for the center medallion of the floor in Mr. Molyneux's 1995 Kips Bay design.
And below that is the painted marquetry medallin realized.

And the entire room:Some details:
And note the return of Max, the Scottie dog:

Don't you just love the swank with a little humor??

This is a just a taste of the rooms showcased in Molyneux by Michale Frank. The ninth annual Master Sand Sculpting competition was held this weekend in Hampton Beach, N.H. Twelve master sculptors from around the world competed for a share in the $15,000 prize purse and the chance to place in the prestigious event. How amazing are these sand sculptures?? I could barely get a bucket of sand to stay in shape!

You can see more photos here on Boston.com. And part of my problem with it was the blue cabinetry. Well, that seems to have surprised some listeners, so I dug out the file to show what I was talking about. To briefly recap, this antique 18th century New England home was being renovated by some builders who had bought it on foreclosure. They clearly had dollar signs in their eyes and thought if they threw in some glossy bells and whistles (circular cobblestone driveway, multi-car carriage house style garage and top of the line kitchen) they'd sell it for big bucks. The problem was that the original house was a charming small house with original brick work, ancient pine floors and low beamed ceilings. Over the years, the house had been added on to - badly. Instead of bringing back the charm, these builders basically gilded the lily. And lost, big time. I believe they paid around $500K and added another $500K. The house was put on the market for $1.8 Million. It ultimately sold for a little over $1Million - 2-3 years later. Between carrying costs, etc - well, they didn't exactly come out too far ahead. (I won't even go into the fact that they'd put vinyl shutters on the exterior and had cheap lighting throughout!).

There were so many problems with their decision making on this property, the biggest being that they spent so much money on this huge, out of scale kitchen with blue cabinets. A high end kitchen is meant to be a selling feature - but the blue cabinetry was only going to appeal to a small group of buyers. This high end "flip" had immediately cut down its potential. A gray blue, gray or cream/off white would have been a much smarter choice. Let's face it, if you are looking to buy a nearly $2Million dollar property, you don't want to have to plan on repainting or replacing the cabinetry right at the get-go.

Meanwhile, I do have to say that blue cabinets can be very charming, if done well, as they were in The Holiday cottage house. How adorable was that kitchen? (Plus, the idea of repainting these small cabinets doesn't seem so daunting!)

What do you think of blue painted cabinetry?

The Skirted Roundtable - Blogging and Design

Join Megan, Joni and I at this week's Skirted Roundtable where we chatted about motivation in blogging (where we get it, how we keep it and knowing when it's gone) and kitchen design. It is an oceanfront location with two homes, a restored classic stone fisherman's cottage and a larger barnlike post&beam home right on the sea, located on 25+acres including half a 26-acre island just offshore. This is looking to be the top choice. Next, we will tackle selecting the exact furnishings, color palette, window treatments, etc.

I'm working on my next pair of articles for Diving Caroline. You can click here to read my first four articles on: "Smart Design to accommodate aging in place", "Turning your bath into a Spa", "It's not hard to go green with your bathroom remodel", and "Design Styles: What's the difference". The current articles include selecting color palettes for the kitchen and bath, and creating a budget conscious kitchen makeover.

On the blogging front, I'm going to be working on a piece on decorating an outdoor room here in New England. As I recently said on The Skirted Roundtable, we have about three minutes here in New England where we can be outdoors happily. But, I'll do my best to showcase some beautiful fabrics and products that will work even in our climate!

And, of course, Megan, Joni and I will be holding court again this week at The Skirted Roundtable. It's back to just the three of us. (And thanks again to Patricia Shackelford/Mrs. Blandings and Karen Carroll/Southern Accents Magazine for being recent guests - weren't they great??) In our blogging segment, we're talking about keeping it all going and when to know enough is enough, and what happens when a blogger just disappears. So stay tuned! Meanwhile, please do let me know if you have any specific design related topics you'd like us to chat about.

Did you get your new Facebook vanity name? Maybe that's why they are they and I am I?

Bon weekend!

It's a dog's life

A very fun event was held last week at the Boston Design Center. Called Pet-a-Porter, it was a doggie fashion show in honor of the late Billie Brenner to benefit the Animal Rescue league. Here's a little bit from her obituary:

"Billie (Schoen) Brenner, a longtime Boston business owner, died of an infection Jan. 11 at her home in Back Bay. She was 82. Family and friends say she was a pioneering female entrepreneur who always saw the importance of being financially independent and having a strong work ethic. They remember her as someone who "did not lunch." Mrs. Brenner opened her first business, Bath & Closet Boutique, on Newbury Street in the 1960s. She sold products to key designers like Ben Cook, a renown Boston interior designer. Mrs. Brenner designed the bathroom in the first production of "This Old House" on WGBH. Mrs. Brenner recognized that bathrooms and kitchens were soon to become fashionable and important parts of the home. Back then, people bought their sinks through a plumber," Mrs. Brenner told the Globe in 1998. Thirty years ago, nobody thought of our business as being fashion-oriented."

Mrs. Brenner never retired and instructed her family that her showroom at the Boston Design Center was only to be closed on the day of her funeral. She loved her family, friends and her dogs. We all love the dogs!

with Miss Karen Carroll, editor in chief of Southern Accents Magazine. I'll admit it - I've not been that familiar with the magazine - but after perusing their website and speaking with Karen - I am totally hooked! We chatted with Karen about how she got to her current position, the passion of their readers (including a certain Texas blogger and all her relatives) and why she's not depressed, just loves blue! We also chatted about magazine covers and I shared that when a mag cover is pink, I'm laying down the green! Karen also blogs under the heading of "Miss Gracious Living" and they are totally supportive of the design blogerati.

So, please join us at The Skirted Roundtable and let us know what you think!
