'Location-based services' will allow users to interact with the environment

You stand in front of a hotel. You point your cell phone at it. You click. The hotel's Web page appears on the device's screen. You check accommodations, prices, vacancies and inquire about special offers. Then you walk in or walk on.

That's right — the world will turn into the Web and clicking an icon on the screen of a desk-tethered PC will be passé. Clicking will become a matter of interacting with the environment, thanks to the advent of "location-based services" (LBS).

It's already a reality in Japan through the KDDI network there, using software from GeoVector Corp. in San Francisco. Pamela Kerwin, GeoVector's vice president of strategic development, explained that LBS requires that the phone has GPS circuitry, so it knows where it is. Additionally, it needs to have a compass so it knows where it is pointed.

The user points and clicks the LBS phone at the building in question, and the phone's application software accesses a database of map locations, determines what building or business the phone is pointed at and links to its Web site, Kerwin explained.

New wireless Internet
LBS is a major break between the standard old wired Internet and the brave new wireless one, says Jackie Fenn, analyst at the Gartner Inc. market research firm in Stanford, Conn. "Getting information to someone as he moves around in the physical world is not the same as the browser-driven behavior that has been the cornerstone of the wired Web. The wireless context involves getting information related to where you are and what you are trying to do," she said.

Indeed, Kerwin anticipates premium advertising opportunities (and premium revenues for her firm.) While some pundits foresee LBS as a barrage of spam ads sent to everyone passing near a business, Kerwin says the idea will be to ask those who have clicked on the location if they would like a coupon.

"If he has asked for a coupon, that makes him a highly qualified prospect, and we can charge a premium for that — that's our business model," she explained.

Interesting Windows Vista features

Windows Vista reportedly will boot and shutdown in just 2-3 seconds. I'm not sure how that is possible considering my 3Ghz Pentium 4 takes at least 6 seconds just to load the BIOS, do a memory test, etc. before it even attempts to load the operating system on the hard disk. I don't see how Windows Vista can startup or shutdown in just 2-3 seconds.

Windows Vista processes login scripts and startup programs and services in the background so you can start working right away. You'll also shut down and restart your computer less often by using the New Sleep state, a simple one-click on and off experience which not only reduces power consumption, but also delivers and protects user dat.

I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe I should go get the beta and see for myself. I guess it's simply a super-Suspend mode not a true power-off. Anyway, here's another interesting feature that caught my eye:

As you probably know, several years ago Microsoft decided to merge Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Professional into a common codebase, namely Windows XP. So with this new Media Center functionality built into Windows Vista, does this mean Microsoft is merging the Windows Media Center Edition operating system into Windows Vista? Geez, make up your mind Microsoft. Either have one version of Windows or don't - but stop splitting off new operating systems and then re-merging them back.

Vista a failure???

WITH TWO OVERLAPPING events, Microsoft admitted what we have been saying all along, Vista, aka Windows Me Two (Me II), is a joke that no one wants.

It did two unprecedented things this week that frankly stunned us.

Dell announced that it would be offering XP again on home PCs. The second that Vista came out, Microsoft makes it very hard for you to sell anything other than Me II. It can't do this on the business side because it would be laughed out the door, but for the walking sheep class, well, you take what you are shovelled.

This is classic abusive monopoly behaviour, Microsoft wrote the modern book on it. It pulled all the major OEMs in by twisting their arms with the usual methods, and they again all fell into line. Never before has anyone backpedalled on this, to do so would earn you the wrath of Microsoft.

But Dell just did. This means that Me II sales are at least as bad as we think, the software and driver situation is just as miserable, and Dell had no choice but to buck the trend. If anyone thinks this is an act of atonement for foisting such a steaming pile on us, think again, it doesn't care about the consumer.

What happened is, the OEMs revolted in the background and forced Microsoft's hand. This is a big neon sign above Me II saying 'FAILURE'. Blink blink blink. OK, Me II won't fail, Microsoft has OEMs whipped and threatened into a corner, it will sell, but you can almost hear the defectors marching toward Linux. This is a watershed.

The other equally monumental Me II failure? Gates in China launching a $3 version of bundled XP. Why is this not altruism? Well, it goes back to piracy and how it helped enforce the MS monopoly. If you can easily pirate Windows, Linux has no price advantage, they both cost zero.

With Me II, Microsoft made it very hard to pirate. It is do-able, you can use the BIOS hack and probably a host of others, but the point is, it raised the bar enough so lots of people have to buy it. Want to bet that in a country with $100 average monthly salary, people aren't going to shell out $299 for Me II Broken Edition?

What did MS do? It dropped the price about 100x or so. I can't say this is unprecedented, when it made Office 2003 hard to pirate it had to backpedal with the student edition for about $150. This time though, things are much more desperate.

If you fit Microsoft's somewhat convoluted definition of poor, it still wants to lock you in, you might get rich enough to afford the full-priced stuff someday. It is at a dangerous crossroads, if its software bumps up the price of a computer by 100 per cent, people might look to alternatives.

That means no Me II DRM infection lock in, no mass migration to the newer Office obfuscated and patented file formats, and worse yet, people might utter the W word. Yes, you guessed it, 'why'. People might ask why it is sticking with the MS lock in, and at that point, it is in deep trouble.

So, it did the unthinkable, and dropped the price. I won't bother to hunt down all the exec quotes saying how people can't afford clean water would be overjoyed to sell kidneys to upgrade to the new version of Office, but they are out there. This was a sacred cow, and it is now hamburger backed up against the wall.

These two actions by Microsoft are proof of what I suggested three years ago. Microsoft has lost its ability to twist arms, and now it is going to die. It can't compete on level ground, so is left with backpedalling and discounts of almost 100 times.

What we are seeing is an unprecedented shift of power. It is also an unprecedented admission of failure. And the funniest part about the moves made? They are the wrong things to do. Microsoft is in deep trouble

Folder Options missing

Symptoms: Folder options is not available in the Windows Explorer Tools menu.
Cause: This problem is caused by a group policy.
Solution: Run the attached batch file or do the following:
Click Start, choose Run and execute regedit.

Navigate to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Look for a value called NoFolderOptions on the right panel
Right click on the NoFolderOptions value and choose delete

Navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Right click on NoFolderOptions on the right pane and choose Delete

Task Manager disabled

Method 1:

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System

In the right-pane, delete the value named DisableTaskMgr
Close Regedit.exe

Method 2: Using Group Policy Editor - for Windows XP Professional
Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate to this branch:

User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options / Remove Task Manager

Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.
Set the policy to Not Configured.

Create invisible and secret account in XP

If you want to keep you personal secrets which cannot be accessed by your friends by logging into your account, Simply make it invisible.

By meaning INVISIBLE, It won't be listed in the login screen. But if it is not listed in login screen, how would YOU login into it! READ ON!!!

Step 1: Simply Create a new account

Step 2: Open the registry editor (i hope you know what is registry editor)

IN CASE: In case you don't know what is registry editor

Press Window key+R on you keyboard
Run box will appear, Type in 'regedit.exe'. There opens the registry editor

Step 3: Head on to
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Currentversion\Winlogon\SpeacialAccounts\Userlist

Step4: Create a new DWORD value with the same name as of your new account. In the example, the username was
§Secret§, so I created a new DWORD value with §Secret§ as its name.

If done correctly, Your invisible account will be created. Now, Restart. When the welcome screen comes you won't be able to see your invisible account (was it supposed to be visible!). Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice [Dont worry, it won't restart]. A different screen will open. Type in the name of your secret account, (§Secret§ in my case) and your password (if applicable). Press OK and you'll login to your secret account.
Change settings, Customize it and one good thing is that, no one will ever be able to detect your secret account unless he/she is a hacker.

Symptoms of viruses, worms, and trojan horse viruses

If you suspect or confirm that your computer is infected with a virus, obtain current antivirus software. When a virus infects your e-mail or other files, it may have the following effects on your computer:

The infected file may make copies of itself. This may use all the free space in your hard disk.
A copy of the infected file may be sent to all the addresses in your e-mail address list.
The virus may reformat your disk drive and delete your files and programs.

· The virus may install hidden programs, such as pirated software. This pirated software may then be distributed and sold from your computer.

The virus may reduce security. This could allow intruders to remotely access your computer or network.

The following symptoms are frequently caused by or associated with a virus:

You received an e-mail message that has a strange attachment. When you open the attachment, dialog boxes appear or a sudden degradation in system performance occurs.
There is a double extension on an attachment that you recently opened, such as .jpg.vbs or .gif.exe.
An antivirus program is disabled for no reason and it cannot be restarted.
An antivirus program cannot be installed on the computer or it will not run.
Strange dialog boxes or message boxes appear onscreen.
Someone tells you that they have recently received e-mail messages from you containing attached files (especially with .exe, .bat, .scr , and .vbs extensions) that you did not send.
New icons appear on the desktop that you did not put there, or are not associated with any recently installed programs.
Strange sounds or music plays from the speakers unexpectedly.
A program disappears from the computer, but you did not intentionally remove it.

A virus infection may also cause the following symptoms, but these symptoms may also be the result of ordinary Windows functions, or problems in Windows that is not caused by a virus.

Windows will not start at all, even though you have not made any system changes, and you have not installed or removed any programs.
There is much modem activity. If you have an external modem, you may notice the lights blinking too much when the modem is not being used. You may be unknowingly supplying pirated software.
Windows will not start because certain critical system files are missing, and then you receive an error message that lists the missing files.
The computer sometimes starts as expected, but at other times it stops responding before the desktop icons and taskbar appear.
The computer runs very slowly, and it takes a long time to start.
You receive out-of-memory error messages even though your computer has much RAM.
New programs do not install correctly.
Windows spontaneously restarts unexpectedly.
Programs that used to run stop responding frequently. If you try to remove and reinstall the software, the issue continues to occur.
A disk utility such as Scandisk reports multiple serious disk errors.
A partition disappears.
Your computer always stops responding when you try to use Microsoft Office products.
You cannot start Windows Task Manager.

Running Applications in Compatibility Mode

With Windows XP, you can run programs as if though they were being run under a different operating system. (This is known as "emulation".) Simply right-click a shortcut, select "Properties" and then check "Run in compatibility mode" and select the operating system you wish to make the program believe it is being run under. This fools or tricks the program into thinking you are really using a previous version of Windows, such as NT, 2000, 98, or 95. This is especially useful for certain games that won't run properly. Be careful *not* to use this with certain system utilities, such as antivirus, defrag, registry, and disk tool applications.

Customizing the Start Menu

Right click on the "Start" button and left click "Properties". From here, you can select the new Windows XP style Start Menu, or return to the Windows 2000/Millennium style one. You can also customize the two possible choices using their corresponding "Customize" buttons. This also allows you to turn on or disable cascading menus and other options that are useful, such as large or small icons and more.

Bring Back Those Desktop Icons

After you install Windows XP, you probably noticed that some of your icons from previous versions of Windows you've used are missing. Microsoft did this intentionally to help simply and reduce clutter. Of course, for some people, this isn't the best choice or the user preference. So, if you want those icons like "My Computer" and "My Network Places" back, just open Display Properties (right click Desktop Wallpaper, left click "Properties") and click the "Desktop" tab. Click the "Customize Desktop" button and on the "General" tab check the items you want. You can also change the icons used by these desktop items in the same screen. One final tip related to this screen is the "Clean Desktop Now" button, which notifies you of unused icons on the desktop and offers to remove them if you choose.

Give Me My ClearType

Windows XP includes a great new visual technology, called "ClearType" which increases horizontal legibility by approximately 300% and it looks great. Go back into "Display Properties" [see tip: "Bring Back Those Desktop Icons" for instructions] and this time, go to the "Appearance" tab. Click "Effects" and for the second drop down box, labeled "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", select "ClearType". Click OK twice and you're all set.

Lock Computer vs. Welcome Login Screen

You must go into Control Panel and open the "User Accounts" applet to change this setting. Click "Change the way users log on or off". For maximum security, uncheck the "Use the Welcome screen" option. This re-enables the use of the "Lock Computer" option from the ALT CTRL DELETE menu, but prevents multiple users from being logged on locally at a single time. This also returns to the Windows 2000 style login screen. If you'd rather have the ability to *not* be able to use "Lock Computer" and would rather allow multiple users to logon to the computer at a single time locally, leave this setting checked and also check "Use Fast User Switching".

Looking for a Windows XP Compatible Driver?

If you can't find a driver for a hardware device under Windows XP, you can try to use a Windows 2000 compatible driver for the same hardware. Usually this tends to work, and in my experience so far, it always has. However, if you can find a driver specifically designed for use with Windows XP that is usually the best and safest option. You can also e-mail the hardware manufacturer and ask them about Windows XP compatibility and drivers.
