This weekend is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in the UK. It only takes an hour, and you simply note down the birds you see and send in your results, which you can do easily online. You don't have to have a garden either, any spot will do! You can find more details here: Big Garden Birdwatch. You have until Feb 17th to submit your results.

The results help the RSPB create a snapshot of bird numbers across the country. Last year over 600,000 people took part, which is fantastic. It seems house sparrows and starlings have seen a dramatic decline in recent years...although not in our garden apparently; their only competition yesterday came from a few blackbirds and a lone dunnock.

This is a tiny snippet of a painting I recently completed, I'll show the whole thing later in the year. Would have been nice to see a barn owl in the garden yesterday!

The postman recently bought a copy of a new watercolour book from Quarto which used some of my work (below). I must admit I don't often buy art instruction books so I really don't know what makes a good one or not, but artist/author Robin Berry certainly knows her stuff and I enjoyed it.

I appear to be a little swamped with work and 'things' just now so my apologies in advance if postings here are a little erratic over the coming weeks while I catch up with myself. Its always lovely to hear from you if you stop by though, and meanwhile I am painting as fast as I can :)

florida exhibition and catching up

The annual exhibition of the Miniature Art Society of Florida (MASF) opens on January 15th at the Dunedin Fine Art Center and I am delighted that my five paintings (above) were juried into this huge show. It was also lovely to learn that my painting of The Ross Fountain in Edinburgh received first place in the opaque watercolour category (I took a few pictures as I painted this one which you can see again here). I completed this painting at the end of last year but this is the first time its been exhibited.

If you have the chance to visit this show I'm sure you will not be disappointed - along with literally hundreds of miniature paintings for sale, from many of the best artists in the field, there are also painting demonstrations and the chance to view the Society's own collection.

I have been really busy lately and below are some snippets of recent paintings for jigsaw companies - I'll show them in full once they have been released next year.

The final two paintings from the latest group going to the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in London have just left and are shown below framed -contact me or the gallery for purchase information.

Its been tricky to find enough time for my miniatures lately, but I have an amur leopard in progress just now (below). We were lucky enough to see them at Marwell Zoo a few weeks ago and I have been trying to get it finished ever since. These beautiful cats are critically endangered and its sobering to learn that there are only around 35 individuals left in the wild. On the same note, I've also been doing some drawing by the fire in the evenings and was really enjoying this study of the amur leopard...until the cat decided to make herself comfortable and rolled all over it. Serves me right for leaving the sketchbook open on the chair I guess....here's the abandoned, totally smudged, result!

Finally, I doubt I will be posting again before the holidays so I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

Two new miniature paintings completed since my last post and part of a fresh consignment of paintings for the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in central London. The cat on the steps is already there actually, and the birds will follow just as soon as their frames arrive from Brampton Framing.

I couldn't resist the steps with all the pretty plant pots as we were walking through North Queensferry last year (en route to swimming with sharks) and managed to take a few photos before I was forced to move on by restless shark-loving smaller people. No such problem with the black headed gulls of course.

A new shore painting in miniature completed, this time with oyster catchers. On the big easel its been quite festive lately and I've just finished a christmas scene. I'm now back in the kitchen for some baking in the latest piece - I'll show them next year after they've been released as jigsaws.

The Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington DC (MPSGS) will be holding their annual exhibition of miniature art at Strathmore Mansion, North Bethesda, MD, USA from November 21st - Dec 30th and I'll have three pieces in the show. I was delighted to learn 'Socorro Dove' (bottom right in the above photo) received second place in the International awards. This is one of the largest miniature art exhibitions in the US and I do hope you will be able to visit if you are in the area!

I realised recently that the shore doesn't feature in my work very often given the fact that I live right next to it and walk on it most days. Perhaps it is too familiar, but there's certainly no lack of inspiration. Its a constant source of peace and enjoyment, even on wild days, and nothing clears the cobwebs or puts things in perspective quite so well as a wander along the beach. Anyway to make amends above is my latest miniature painting - which I enjoyed so much I am already planning the next seaside one!

The Artistic Designs Miniature Show is underway in Brownsburg, IN, USA and you can see the exhibition online at their website. I have four paintings in the exhibition (above) which was postponed from earlier in the year following a fire at the gallery. The show runs until November 22nd so I hope you will be able to get along to see it if you are in the area!

Finally, I was really sorry this year not to be able to submit work to the Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition, I just basically ran out of time. But hopefully next year I will be better organised again. Big congratulations to fellow Orkney artist Tim Wootton who won the Birdwatch Artist of the Year award! If you haven't managed to get along to the Mall Galleries in London to see the show yet, it runs until this sunday (Nov 6th) and you can get a wonderful taster at Making a Mark where Katherine has reviewed the exhibition.

I've been trying to ease myself back into miniatures after far too long an absence, and finished the painting of Tawny Frogmouths (above). I thought they were rather endearing birds, the chicks looked like little balls of fluff snuggled up to their mother in the afternoon sun and then they open their enormous eyes. They are native to Australia and nocturnal, using their huge mouths to catch prey that wanders past and they also mate for life. This family however live at London Zoo.

I've also been having a go at a portrait in miniature and this is where I got to with a tentative attempt at a good friend of ours, Jim, when he came to stay recently. Very much a work in progress and it remains to be seen if I actually finish it! But either way, I've already learned a lot so it has been fun to try something new. I have so far concluded that people are extremely hard to paint. The margin for error (or correction) in a miniature watercolour portrait is pretty much zero from what I could tell, which just makes me appreciate even more the skills of those who can do it.

royal miniature society exhibition 2011

The Royal Miniature Society will soon be staging their annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London, running from Tuesday October 11th until Sunday October 23rd and I'll have six paintings in the show (above).

This is always a truly fantastic show and very much worth a visit if you can go along. Despite the current economic climate, the past three years have seen record sales. Admission is free and there are daily demonstrations by miniature artists throughout the fortnight. Congratulations to Ihtesham Hassan who was awarded the Gold Memorial Bowl (Best in Show) for the beautiful portrait 'Mirage', which can been seen on the main page of the Society website now.

Update: There is a brilliant review of the exhibition by Katherine Tyrrell on her blog Making a Mark.

I was also delighted to be told I have now been elected a full member of the RMS, having been an associate member for the past two years. This is a great honour and I'm very happy!

This year there is an added bonus - a unique opportunity to see a collection of Royal Portrait Miniatures dating from Elizabeth 1st to the present Queen. The exhibition is curated by Richard Chadwick, a leading historian and researcher of portrait miniatures, and features works loaned from private collections worldwide, including many pieces that have never been seen in public before.

On the right is one of the portraits that will be on display, Charles I by John Hoskins c. 1640 (watercolour on vellum). Please check the RMS website to see more.

My latest painting follows on from a visit to Edinburgh Zoo where troops of capuchins and squirrel monkeys inhabit the Living Links field station. There is always something going on with squirrel monkeys and they are fascinating to watch. This little one was taking a break from the antics all around before shooting off after another piece of fruit. I love the way they sit with their tails wrapped around themselves :)

Doesn't time fly?! I hadn't realised how long it had been since my last post. I hope you have all been enjoying a lovely summer in the meantime and I will try and cover as much of the recent news as I can remember. Above is my latest miniature of house sparrows; I love watching these birds, probably our most common garden visitors throughout the year, and have depicted these on the 'feeding' tree right outside our kitchen window.

Some recently completed close up cat portraits (left) will be heading off shortly, together with some miniatures (including the Sparrows above), to Elford Fine Art in Devon who I am delighted to say will now be showing my work both at the gallery and at art fairs around the country. These paintings are not true miniatures but they are small, at only 2" x 3" in size, and a lot of fun to paint.

I've also been busy with larger work for jigsaw companies and below are some recent releases in the UK which will be available shortly from stockists nationwide -

The highlight of the past week for me was undoubtedly joining the helpers at the Creatures Great and Small exhibit at a local agricultural show - Nick Martin had travelled up from Inverness with a van full of rescued reptiles and went down brilliantly with the folks here, many of whom had never met a snake or lizard in the flesh. The charity receives no external funding, so Nick depends on talks and events such as this to raise both awareness and funds, and visitors are also welcome at the centre at Bogbain Adventure and Heritage Farm just outside Inverness.

Despite the fact that we were next door to the poultry, which made for some rather excitable snakes and a fair bit of background noise, the visitors seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. That's me below wearing Charlotte, the beautiful Boa.

Some of the beautiful ships arriving in Kirkwall last night as part of the annual Tall Ships Race. Today they will be cruising around the islands with members of the public on board before heading north to Shetland. Unfortunately the weather is a bit dreich today, but hopefully it will still be a wonderful experience!

Below are my miniature paintings selected for the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art which opened this weekend in Wirral - I hope you can get a chance to visit if you are in the area.

UPDATE - I just found out that I received the Daler Rowney Award for Best Watercolour at the NEWA show! Especially pleased because they are both miniatures in an exhibition full of much larger works and its always nice to know they get noticed at all :)

The winning paintings in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition have been unveiled - they had over 1000 entries from all over the world so I was very pleased to make it as far as the final shortlist of 100. Congratulations to the worthy winners and I think I'm right in saying they will be exhibited in London later in the year.

The miniature of gannets is finished and shown above with a 'ghost' penny for scale. You can almost have too much of a good thing and I had so much trouble deciding which photos to use for this painting that I will almost certainly be returning to gannets again at some point. Besides, they are wonderful birds to paint.

I was happy to find out this week that my work was juried into the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art. I sent two miniatures but I don't know yet if they both got in. It was good to see so many familiar names in the list and it is sure to be an outstanding show to visit. The exhibition is one of the largest wildlife art shows in the UK and takes place 15th - 31st July at Gordale Garden Centre in Wirral and includes an opening weekend of art demonstrations.

I'm also pleased to say that my miniature paintings will soon be available year round at two new galleries, one in the UK and one in the US. I'll give more details later. On the big easel I'm continuing with the final in the series of farm scenes for an American jigsaw company and will shortly be starting a Christmas scene - a first for me :)

gannets

One of the miniatures I am currently working on is of gannets and a few weeks ago there were lots of them about for several days, close in to shore so an excellent opportunity to grab some reference!

Since they move so fast, I am relying heavily on lots of videos I took as well as still photos to help me with the painting - which is a good thing as quite a few of the stills consist of nothing more than splashes in the water... Luckily I can freeze the video (which I did for the photo above) and slow it right down - this has made such a difference to understanding what is going on and the contortions they can get into as they dive.

It is great fun to watch them and while I have the videos out anyway to work from, I put some bits together to share with you, just click on it below. They are such beautiful birds and I hope you enjoy a slice of Orkney. I tried including a piece of one diving in slow motion which I hope works ok. (Your ears aren't deceiving you either - that is a blackbird you can hear amongst the cries of the terns as I was standing in the garden :)). As far as the new miniature goes, I'm still working on the composition just now but I'll post the finished painting when I'm done. Eventually.

I shall be doing a larger painting of barn owls later in the year and while working on the sketches for the client's approval, I couldn't resist doing a miniature of a barn owl as well. So here it is :)

We don't get barn owls this far north, but they are fairly widespread in the rest of the UK and I think they are one of the prettiest owls. You can find out more about them at The Barn Owl Trust.

We have been enjoying a few days of beautiful weather in the northern isles - with the odd shower admittedly, but basically lovely and so good to see the sun! While I'm busy with paintings for jigsaw companies on the big easels, I did manage to finish this little miniature of a mute swan preening on stenness loch. I've yet to come up with a suitable title (or even an unsuitable one) but it was a peaceful scene to paint.

I thought you might also enjoy meeting our newest family member, Ryu the bearded dragon. We think he is absolutely adorable (and he's cuddlier than you would guess). Cue 'epic pose' -

My latest miniature features an Orangutan, based on photos my husband kindly took for me on a recent visit to Hong Kong zoo. I would love to have the chance to see these incredible apes in the wild some day. Meantime I have a horrible cold so my apologies for the short post but my brain isn't working very well this morning!

This week the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation announced details of their upcoming exhibition 'The Best of Wildlife Art' to be held in London in June. I'm thrilled to be included in this show again this year.

'Bringing together the best of the Wildlife Artist of the Year 2011 entries plus work from Three Generations of the Shepherd family and from featured guest artists (including Carl Brenders, John Banovich, Gary Hodges, Simon Gudgeon and more) in celebration of David's 80th year'.

STEP BY STEP - GORILLA PAINTING IN MINIATURE

Friend and fellow artist Melanie Phillips has recently launched a new website, I-Art, aimed at being an online resource for information, reviews, materials and including art demos. It is still early days but I know Melanie has lots of plans for the site and would welcome feedback and suggestions! I was delighted to be asked to contribute and you can now see the resulting step-by-step of my Gorilla painting, Pensive.

The Hilliard Society International Exhibition of Miniature Art opens today in Somerset. This is a wonderful show, featuring over 300 paintings and sculptures from some of the finest miniature artists in the UK and abroad and hosted in the beautiful cathedral city of Wells. If you are in the area it will be well worth a visit - entry is free and there are also daily demonstrations! I have five paintings in the show:

Great excitement here today as a family group of killer whales (ok, pod) appeared in front of my parents house on the other side of the island, just yards from the shore. There were two adults and a youngster, chasing seals. By the time I got there they had moved further along - I did manage to get a short piece of video before they disappeared...with apologies for the quality but it was windy and it's hand held, plus it was way too exciting to concentrate properly :)

Loooooong time since I last posted - apologies. Been very busy in the studio with larger work and away, so now trying to catch up with everything. I do have two miniatures in progress but they have been at the same stage for about a fortnight....hopefully I will have time to finish them this coming week.

Some great news waiting for me when I got home - my miniature painting of young swallows has been juried through to the final 100 of the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition, which apparently had over 1000 entries this year. This means somehow working out how to get it down to Marwell for the judging...its a personal hand-in thing (and take-away-again thing) and I can't possibly be there (I really should read the entry details more carefully). If anyone else is going with their work - can you let me know if you have room for a tiny painting in your pocket?!

I also received word that I have been accepted as an associate member of the Society of Animal Artists. It was a last minute decision to try for membership as I really didn't think I stood a chance, but it's a terrific organisation and very active - plus many of my painting heroes are members - so I'm a happy bunny :)

The Society of Animal Artists is an association of animal and wildlife painters and sculptors. Founded in 1960, the Society is devoted to promoting excellence in the portrayal of the creatures sharing our planet, and to the education of the public through its informative art seminars, lectures and teaching demonstrations. Some of the finest animal artists from the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Japan, and Australia are represented in the Society's membership.

Three miniature exhibitions have opened in the US this past week - I have work at the Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC, which runs until june 4th; The Snowgoose Gallery in Bethlehem, PA which runs until june 11th and the Parklane Gallery, Kirkland, WA which runs until June 5th. I was also delighted to learn that my turkey received an Honourable Mention in the awards at Parklane. All three galleries have the entire show to view online, but if you have the chance to get along in person to any of them you will be in for a treat (and miniatures always look better in real life!)

Last weekend my daughter and I spent a wonderful day at Nick Martin's exotic animal rescue centre in Inverness - Creatures Great and Small. Nick takes in reptiles and other creatures from the public, the SSPCA and other organisations across the UK. As his charity receives no external funding, he also gives talks and visits to help meet the considerable costs involved in caring for them all. There are no regulations to control the sale of these creatures and they are readily available from pet shops. While some are knowledgeable and offer advice and support, some are not, leading to the sad need for centres such as Nick's to pick up the pieces. His knowledge and dedication are amazing - not to mention his endless patience and good humour!

I completed this miniature painting of a bearded dragon this week and proceeds from the sale will be donated to the centre. It is priced at £350, framed and ready to hang.

david shepherd wildlife artist of the year exhibition

I was thrilled to hear that my painting (above) has been selected for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation exhibition and shortlisted for the Wildlife Artist of the Year. This is a truly superb show, not only in terms of the fantastic work on display but also because half of the money generated from sales goes directly to DSWF to fund wildlife projects around the world. I was lucky enough to participate last year as well with 'Pensive' and am honoured to be included again.

The exhibition runs from 6 - 11 june at the Mall Galleries in London and for those not able to attend in person the shortlisted works will be available to view online nearer the time.

Starting this week (unusually for me) with a miniature painting work-in-progress that I actually remembered to take a photo of. This is where I am at this evening with a portrait of a chimpanzee that we met at Edinburgh zoo last summer. This chap had just been enjoying an onion (and he didn't wince once) while another chimp had just cleared the viewing deck by hurling apples at the humans with considerable enthusiasm! I really do enjoy painting apes and this one is no exception. Followed by the second in my (short) miniature series of boats in the harbour, and a pair to the one in my last post -

I finally completed a miniature painting of a black headed gull that has been lurking here for weeks and also begun what I hope will be a short series of harbour scenes. This one is from Stromness. I tend to avoid boats (because I find them hard to draw!) but figured I needed the practice...and I really should have a go since I live on an island.
