Some applications are free and others you can buy. They range from navigation charts, shipping regs, to the anchor watch app.
The Navionics mobile marine charts for example sell 11 IPhone gold charts regions and 7 IPad gold chart regions, some of these chart regions start as low as $9.99 for the US.

These apps are great fun and can also be helpful on your boat.
Here are few examples:Ship Finder, Marine Rules & signals, AyeTides,Knot Guide, iDrifter Anchor watch, Bombora Weather,Boating Suite • Log Book & Expense Log, Fleetmon mobile vessel tracking, shipping regs, and more...
All these boating friendly apps and more can be found and purchase here: http://www.yachtinginsider.com/charts.html
warning:
The electronic chart is an aid to navigation designed to facilitate the use of authorized government charts, not to replace them. Only official government charts and notices to mariners contain all information needed for the safety of navigation, and as always, the captain is responsible for their prudent use.
Always remember the prudent mariner will not rely solely on any single aid to navigation.
all charts and maps are for reference purposes only. You assume all responsibility and risk
for their use .Boaters should carry VHF, paper charts, compass and boat marine GPS onboard at all time.
You can make good money doing this. As a start you can get a deckhand or a stewardess job with no experience on some yachts if you’re willing to listen and learn, take some courses and training such as STCW95, silver service or attend the Chapman school of seamanship etc.

This can help you get a job faster and as you gain experience while working hard you can advance even to a captain one day if you will take the necessary training and courses in due time. So if you are a young guy or gal starting early in the mega yacht industry and with any luck and know how you will run a mega yacht, or be engineer, first mate, purser, chef, or chief stewardess one day.

Crew earn great salaries and get perks like full board and food, annual paid leave, insurance, tips and bonuses. In 2008 there were 25 km or 15 miles of new yacht over 80 ft under construction throughout the world. It’s estimated that 5,000 new crew will be required to fill these positions. If you like to earn good money travel the world and have fun while you doing this look for a crew job on a mega yacht. I have many friends that did that.
