2010-02-25T01:18:00.009-05:00

Hey guys, testing some new formats- let me know what you think.... do you prefer the videos or just the audio tracks? the audio should make the pages load a lot faster-

Here is a little playlist for thursday, or whenever you listen to this... If you hit play on the first song I *think* it should cycle through all of them-

Middle East - The Darkest Side

The National - So Far Around the Bend

Phoenix - Rome

JayZ, Coldplay - A Life of Clocks

Clearly this band is named for me.

2010-02-24T20:39:00.004-05:00

Very good. very good.

Also, with the new format i have, i can put on bigger videos... that puts me in a good mood.

The Tallest Man on Earth - I won't be found

The Tallest Man on Earth - the gardener

The Tallest Man on Earth - King of Spain

2010-02-24T12:55:00.001-05:00

Hey guys- here is another 2 songs... hope you like-

ALSO, I have been posting more often lately, but with less songs per post... any feedback? Do you prefer the 1/week with a bunch of songs, or a couple times per week with only 1 or 2 songs?

Bear in Heaven - You Do You

Surfer Blood - Swim (To Reach the End)

jingle jangle

2010-02-22T15:11:00.002-05:00

Here's another track from the vault, heard it the other day, took me a while to remember the name, many apologies.

Bear Hands - What a Drag

Caribou- Odessa

2010-02-19T15:42:00.002-05:00

I forgot this one, its been seemingly on repeat on XMU for a couple days and it almost took me that long to decide whether I liked it or not... I will let you decide i guess-

Caribou - Odessa

A little more rock than normal, plus a rapper?

2010-02-19T13:11:00.002-05:00

Heard this song the other day, I dig it, sounds a little white stripes, but less grungy.. call me crazy but I hear a little Audioslave-ish influence in there?

Crash Kings - Mountain Man

XX (pronounced The X X) is a band I have tried to ignore for a while and not post, but they just don't go away, and I find myself liking every successive song more and more, very cool sound, very chill, i'll post a couple of my favorites now:

XX - Islands

XX - Crystalised

XX - Basic Space

A band I know nothing about, but I like this song... stolen from Aquarium Drunkard

Dr. Dog - Shadow People

The rapper as promised..... Gil Scott-Heron, known as the grandfather of rap, fresh outta jail with a new album- this song is awesome.

Gil Scott-Heron - Me and the Devil

Thats all for today- this took too long. I don't like working to hear good music.

New layout

2010-02-19T13:10:00.002-05:00

I apologize for the constantly shifting layout, it has taken me a long time to find one of these stupid templates that won't cut off the edge of the widescreen videos... i know its boring, I'm working on that-

2010-02-17T23:39:00.001-05:00

Not my usual post, but please watch this in full 1080p and full screen, it is crazy.

There is no wonder he wins gold at everything....

Cover story

2010-02-08T16:07:00.003-05:00

Three covers for today, people i like covering other people i like. what could be better?

First, listen to these two clips from Peter Gabriel, talking about his album "Scratch my back"

Its a brilliant idea (trading songs with other artists... you cover me, and i'll cover you)... and he executes it beautifully.... and the first cover i pull here (after the interviews) should come as no surprise.

If you don't have 20 minutes, skip to the songs posted...

I don't know about you... but I will be buying this album. (see previous posts about my love for peter gabriel)

Peter Gabriel - Flume (original by Bon Iver) - you can download this track for free over at Peter Gabriel's site Sorry for the -kind of lame- video, there isn't exactly a music video for this yet...

The next cover is an interesting one, but once you hear it, you kind of get why they did it.

Phoenix - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands (original by Bob Dylan) - Thomas Mars has a little dylan to his voice.. i REALLY dig how he made it his own, but you can absolutely tell its a dylan song. Awesome.

I will throw this last one in just for shits... because sometimes the covers are better than the original, and sometimes they aren't (pretty profound statement, huh) what you think of this one? Me? I dig.

The Kooks - Crazy (original Gnarls Barkley)

It's a good day for music. It always is.

Two new Yeasayer tracks, and 2 bonuses

2010-02-02T11:05:00.004-05:00

For you DC, since you finally listen to good music.

Yeasayer - O.N.E.

Yeasayer - Ambling Alp

BONUS TIME... more Justin Vernon

Bon Iver + St. Vincent - Roslyn

Volcano Choir (Justin Vernon + Collections of Colonies of Bees) - Island IS

EDIT:

OK I forgot about this one, been meaning to post it for a week or two. Gutt this one probably appeals more to you but DC you might like it too:

The Middle East - Blood

Edit edit:

I am beginning to realize i post most often on rainy days. I wonder why that is.

PLEASE enjoy some Bon Iver. Its a Justin Vernon kinda day.

Sketchbooks-

2009-06-10T13:45:00.002-04:00

I loved this write-up on sketchbooks..... i fall into the "i believe they are good but don't do them" category, as do most people i know. This article really breaks it down into the root of it all... thinking... its not about drawing well, or necessarily drawing at all... its about thinking, especially visually, and putting your thoughts on paper.

Check out the article at this super-cool website.

One love-

Best album title ever award.

2009-05-28T11:28:00.005-04:00

Relatively new French Band "Phoenix" has just put out a new album entitled Johann Sebastian Phoenix, and I deem it winner of the best album name of the year award. Here is a review from Rolling Stone:

If you listen to only one song this year about the inner turmoil of 19th-century classical composer Franz Liszt, make it Phoenix's "Lisztomania." These diabolically crafty French rockers use the composer (a major teen idol in his day) as a symbol of creative conflict, with singer Thomas Mars emoting over an exuberant rush of guitar pop. But the band sounds more musically confident than ever, building on the breakthrough of its 2006 album, It's Never Been Like That. The 10 songs are sleek and clean, as if the Strokes had kept pushing a little longer and maybe bought some old disco records. Case in point: "Fences" spikes the electro beat of Daft Punk with an urgent acoustic-guitar breakdown for splendidly danceable melancholy.

And who would i be if i didnt give you the video for their single Lisztomania.

Another song you may have heard (or may want to) from their 2006 release "Its Never Been Like That"

Sometimes in the fall:

The whole album rocks, do yourself a favor and buy it.
