She's Gonna Be a Contender!

Last night, Kimora Lee Simmons was beamed into the homes of QVC audiences nationwide and in less than 10 minutes she let the world know that she is preparing to give the skin care game a run for its money. The official launch of Shinto Clinical by Kimora Lee Simmons came amidst a star-studded list of players at QVCs The Buzz on the Red Carpet event hosted live in Los Angeles.

Each designer or stylist showcased during the broadcast had a few minutes to tell the world why their product is the one to buy and Kimora hit it out of the park during her Shinto Clinical pitch. One of the things that really stuck out to me was the fact that such extensive testing has been conducted on the products in the line. Last night, Kimora presented Smooth Answer, an anti-wrinkle moisture boost hydrator, and some of the information that she shared about what the product can do to help slow down the effects of aging sounds really promising. I mean, what woman doesn't want to snatch the hands of time right off the clock?!

It was evident during Kimora's pitch that she feels very passionately about what she is offering to the world in the way of a new skin care option. She told host Lisa Robertson that she's traveled the world and come across products that "over promise and under deliver", so she decided to take matters into her own hands. If what we've seen from her other efforts are any indication, I think it's safe to say, she's going to be a contender.

The complete Shinto Clinical line of products will be available in Nordstrom and Fred Segal soon and eventually will hit the airwaves of Canada's Shopping Channel, just to start. But, the name Kimora Lee Simmons is known the world over, so there's no reason to believe she'll stop there. I certainly wouldn't bet on it and I'm a gambling woman.

Kimora's Pre Baby Phat Influence

Stylist.com has named Kimora Lee Simmons one of the 25 most influential Black models of all time and I couldn't agree more. Dana Oliver writes:

Before Chanel Iman appeared on the covers of American Vogue and Italian Elle, and before Jourdan Dunn became the first black model to walk Prada's runway in over a decade, women like Donyale Luna, Naomi Sims and Beverly Johnson strutted and posed confidently in the face of adversity.

In honor of Black History Month, we take a look back at 25 African-American models who have helped to reshape the standard of beauty.

This is what people seem to forget so often. The adversity. It's not just about glamour and letting the good times roll. Kimora and other African-American models that came before, around the same time and after her, have not just pranced their way into those fashion settings and right on up a crystal stairway. Anyone who believes such does so ill-advisedly. Even Naomi Campbell, notorious for taking no prisoners, had this to say about the rife racism in the industry well over a decade ago:

"There is prejudice. It is a problem and I can't go along any more with brushing it under the carpet," said Streatham's most famous export as far back as 1997. "This business is about selling, and blonde and blue-eyed girls are what sells."

It's truly unfortunate, but it's reality. This is why, what these rats did as they ended the relationship with Kimora is so disgusting. They had no respect for her, a woman of color in the industry who built that brand and no respect for the predominant customers of color who buy Baby Phat. Anyway, lest I digress...while there have been some improvements, there is still quite a way to go where bringing equality in the fashion industry is concerned. Bravo to Stylist.com for taking a moment to recognize these beauties, especially as New York Fashion Week comes to a close. Baby Phat Goes Gypsy Chic

I haven't used those words here in...forever! Baby Phat. Kellwood trash anymore. This is why, finding a tweet with the picture above makes me warm and tingly all over. It's from a show out of the United Kingdom called Big Fat Gypsy Weddings on Channel 4. And um, I didn't blur the guy's face. He must have requested that his face not be shown in such close proximity to such an atrocity for all the world to see.

It's not a Kimora Lee Simmons design. Of that you can be sure. But, I did a quick check of Baby Phat's Twitter and they don't seem to be denying that they put it together, sooooo what does that leave us with? Hell, is it impossible that they designed it? Nope. Especially when Walmart won't even let them in the door. Gotta get those coins how you can and lord knows they have don't have any shame in their game. Will they admit to designing it is the question? I'd say not.

Rocker Avril Lavigne has decided to partner with Kimora Lee Simmons's Just Fabulous to debut her Abbey Dawn collection of shoes and handbags in Spring, 2012. Abbey Dawn will give JustFabulous members early access to 12 shoes and 5 handbags from the collection. Some of those will be exclusive to JustFabulous.

300 Dollar Cream Dreams

I don't think Kimora Lee Simmons will ever cease to amaze me! Wednesday, was the unofficial start to Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week, but there were some pre-start shows and presentations and Twitter was all abuzz. So, I decided that I'd push any Shinto Clinical or Just Fabulous posts out to the masses with a great new tool that I found. What I wasn't prepared for was this woman going on a KLS.com blitzkrieg of information! By the time I finally stumbled out of the house and headed for the gym last night, I felt like I'd put in some hours at a job!

When I got in my car, I thought to myself, "What just happened?" There was an article in OK! Magazine. There was an article in Juicy Magazine Online. There was an article and competition announced on Babble.com and a couple other things that I didn't even touch in my email from Just Fabulous! It was fantastic!

But, here's why I named this post 300 Dollar Cream Dreams. In the OK! Magazine write-up, Kimora says to the question about the idea behind Shinto Clinical:

It's all about firming, tightening, brightening, clearing the discoloration. It looks like, feels like, works like a $300 cream.

This is what Kimora does best. She makes customers feel like they are truly a part of the glamorous world that she lives in. Dare I say, she almost seems to go about her business with that in mind -- finding ways for everyone to at least feel like they are living in the same glamorous world she exists in -- and it's brilliant! And, I don't mean glamorous as in she's running around the streets partying like a rock star. I mean glamorous as in flying in private jets and spending long vacations in St. Barth's surrounded by other celebrities. Because, make no mistake about it, Kimora Lee Simmons works. A lot. But, without a doubt, she enjoys luxuries that most people will never even come close to experiencing.

So, when she tells the masses that Shinto Clinical "works like a $300 cream", she's reaching out to that desire for a taste of luxury that resides in most of us, and it works! I mean, who wouldn't want to buy a $30-$60 product that works like a $300 one? It's the same thing Kimora did with Baby Phat. She made sure that not only did buyers feel like they were buying a piece of luxury, she also made sure that the quality of the apparel felt like luxury. This is why the steep descent into the bargain bins at ~~Walmart~~ the Slauson Swap Meet for Baby Phat has been such an assault on the senses -- because we all know what it once was.

Now, prepare yourselves, because she's a bit older and a lot more savvy than she was during the early Baby Phat years. As successful as that brand has been, that can only mean everything else she does going forward will be even more successful. She knows how to navigate the playing field, avoiding many of the same traps and pitfalls that were placed before her back then. It is going to be so satisfying to watch and I will be cheering her on with all that I can give.

Just promise me that you won't let your 300 dollar cream dreams have you out here looking crazy like the lady in the video below. Please. --Sugar

Shinto Clinical Featured in NYLON Mag

Some months ago, I was chatting with one of my pals on Twitter when we started discussing eyelashes and ways to enhance them or to actually grow some new ones. I expressed my disdain for some new "by prescription only" product that claimed it could help regrow lash hairs because I try to avoid medicines as much as possible. A medicine to regrow eyelash hairs is something I absolutely would never use. Besides, mine are very thick and healthy, bless gawt! So, I don't need it anyway.

But, for those of us who do struggle with a desire for thicker longer lashes, and there are many of us, here comes Kimora Lee Simmons with a solution that does not require a prescription. Shinto Clinical's LASH is a "clinically proven eyelash growth enhancer" and it's already getting accolades.

Less than a month to the big launch of Kimora Lee Simmons's new skin care line, Shinto Clinical, on the mega at home shopping channel, QVC (brick and mortar store roll-out shortly afterwards). Thursday, she sent this tweet which included a picture (above) of her in the QVC studios, apparently doing prep for her February 24th appearance on the network to launch the new line. So exciting!

As the world eagerly awaits a first glimpse of Jay Z and Beyonce's new little bundle of joy, Blue Ivy, the gifts, congratulations and of course, advice, continue to pour in. Who better to give Beyonce advice about how to transition into being a mommy mogul than the queen of mommy mogulness, Kimora Lee Simmons?

During a chat with MTV News, Kimora offered this:

"I always tell people I'm not the glamorous Hollywood mom," said Simmons, who continues to expand her own fashion brand to include the Shinto Clinical skin-care line. "I'm not the kind of celebrity that lives in the spotlight. I'm famous from work that I do. I've always been in the business and raised my family in the business so it's like a second nature for me. I think that's the key is striking a balance. For me it's always about prioritizing."

What's Simmons' advice for new celeb moms looking to follow her lead? "I think it's about choosing what you want and going after that. Do the best you can, but you don't have to be Superwoman."

I am extremely careful about "heaping praise" upon any single individual, because we humans are so prone to screwing up. But, when it is due and when it is unmistakable, the universe leaves me with no other choice. Kimora Lee Simmons is a genius. Let me repeat that. Kimora Lee Simmons is a genius.

Let me explain something to you. What we are all witnessing a 36 year old woman do, and having done since her early 20s, is nothing short of genius. Nothing. She is fashion. But, Kimora Lee Simmons is also business. It is almost too much for my senses to bear. It's one thing to watch a documentary or read a biography or some such about a genius who once was. It's quite another to be alive and present to witness all of this in action. Sure, there are other celebrities and personalities with clothing lines and skincare lines and reality shows and books and such, but there is nobody doing it with as much passion and care and thought as Kimora Lee Simmons. Nobody. And, I dare anyone to name one other.

I mean, let's be honest here. Are most of them as well-versed or as deeply involved in their products as Kimora Lee Simmons? No and there's no need trying to swab your mind to find one because they don't exist. Who hasn't heard the stories about her being a workaholic and a damn near slave-driver? When I find myself in a conversation with someone about this, immediately I am on the defense because...she is me! I remember the very first time I saw an episode of Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, I thought, "Oh my gosh! She's me and bff all rolled up into one!"

I haven't obtained even a modicum of the success that Kimora has, but I understand her drive and determination. I understand her insistence that things be done succinctly and exactly. I understand those Tweets that she sends at 3am saying that she's up working. This is what separates her from the rest. This is what makes other women like us stand up for her whenever necessary because let's face it, we women don't exactly have the welcome mat to success rolled out for us by the men holding the power in this world. We have to fight for it and prove that we are worthy and capable. It's tiresome, but like a blood-bourne illness, it's not easy to shake, so we all have to help one another in these fights whenever and however we can.

Anyway, lest I ramble on too long before getting to the good stuff, an update today from the Shinto Clinical Twitter account and a great article on Women's Wear Daily about the February launch, which you can read at Kimora's website, KLS.com!

Through time, women with power - and powerful women - have often been depicted as demonstrating themselves to be unable to wield that power; devoid of the mastery required to choose with intelligence and the wisdom to exercise that power with mindfulness and force. Many are the stories that depict powerful women as evil, dangerous and harmful to creation. So completely have we mindlessly succumbed to this notion that around the world, women have held the keys to the dungeons of our own demise. Women themselves have learned to teach other women that their Fire – the powerful force that moves through their own bodies, screams NO and is unwilling to comply and capitulate – is dangerous to all, including themselves and should, at all costs, be kept hidden and unexpressed or silenced completely. Worse yet, we have taught each other to hide ourselves in shame when we feel that Fire move, learning instead to lie and betray ourselves and each other rather than claim the unknown territory of its expression. Kimora's Shinto Clinical: It's Coming

For months, we've all been anxiously awaiting the launch of Kimora Lee Simmons's new skincare line, Shinto Clinical. Today, we got a little tease when this was posted from the company's twitter account (which you should definitely go follow):

Oooh la laaaaa! So mysterious! The picture below was posted some time ago on the web claiming to be the approved product packaging. Not sure if that's the case and there isn't any other indication of what it may look like other than the logo present, there, but if that is the packaging, it's pretty slick. Whatever the case, I wouldn't expect anything less than something eye-catching and fresh from Kimora, so it'll be exciting to see what it actually looks like.

Something else of note is, of the 5 Twitter accounts that the Shinto Twitter account is following, one is Nordstrom and the other is QVC, the mega television network for at home shopping. Oooh la laaaaaaa!!! If Kimora is taking to the QVC airwaves to sell Shinto Clinical, this would be huge! I can scarcely fathom what it would mean for sales. Nordstrom would mean big sales. Absolutely. But, have you ever watched the sales action on one of those at home shopping channels? Huge!!!

Kimora's Just Fabulous Joins Pinterest

It feels as though every week there's a new social media tool. I'm fairly certain that half of them are useless, but every now and then I stumble upon one that blows me away. Consider me grasping for something to hold on to because Pinterest has hit me full blast with its endless "pins" of all things fashion, travel, food and quote related, just to name a few categories.

The site acts as a sort of virtual pin board upon which users can pin images of whatever they'd like to share with other Pinterest ~~addicts~~ members. It is a feast for the senses. A couple weeks ago, I sent a tweet to Just Fabulous suggesting that they join Pinterest after seeing a tweet from another company mentioning that their products would soon be pinned there. Whomever the sweet soul is posting the tweets for Just Fab kindly responded that they were already working on it and they'd be out the gate soon.

Silly me. The creative lead at Just Fabulous is only a woman who turned a t-shirt into a multi-million dollar a year company. So, guess what? Thursday, Just Fabulous announced that their Pinterest is up and running!!! I know that I haven't done the description justice, and I could ramble on here for a bit longer to describe it, but I need for you to go there and take a look at Pinterest in all its full glory. You just have to see it! So, get to it and enjoy! But, be careful. It is extremely addictive! Really addictive! --Sugar

If you're reading this, I hope that the year ahead is a great one for you. Even you, Baby Phat/Kellwood water carriers. Now, I don't mean a great year for Baby Phat, the brand. I believe that this will be the year it finally goes under and I will rejoice. But, seriously, I don't wish you all any ill will where your health is concerned and I hope you make it through the year without any debilitating illnesses and such. But, I need for Phat Fashions to fail and as long as you insist upon misleading the people, if that means Kellwood Company fails along with it, so be it. Karma is something else. I think she's got something mighty nasty brewing up for you guys. --Sugar
