Gaezzetti are a alt-rock outfit from New Jersey with pop and rock influences, notably R.E.M., on Now & Ever Records - the label that helped launch Dillinger Escape Plan in 1997. Gaezzetti take their name from an Italian dialect word for newspapers (Gazzetti). The groups 2009 album First Adventure is a short but solid album that effortlessly wanders from full on celebrations of living (Lost & Found Part II) to darker reflections of the endless efforts in trying create success in a harsh and unrelenting world (Not Getting Any Younger).

Until this year, the band offered a full downloadable version of First Adventure at gaezetti.com but the site has been temporarily shut down and the album is no longer available at Amazon or Myspace.

Paul Chadwick's Concrete grew from a character first considered to be a rip-off of Marvel's early sulky incarnation of The Thing into a thought-provoking hero tortured by being unwillingly locked in a large, unwieldy body of stone. Instead of becoming a villain, because what else do you do when you're a giant concrete ogre, Concrete chose to be a low-key superhero who fought in very human arenas from environmental activism to political unrest.

Chadwick, who previously worked as an artist on Marvel's short-lived Dazzler series and also drew storyboards for Disney, wrote and illustrated stories that were much more slice-of-life by being focused on realistic situations rather than over-the-top fight sequences. His Concrete series, first published by Dark Horse Comics in 1986 won Chadwick the Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist in 1989.

Chadwick is currently drawing a miniseries for DC, Seven Against Chaos, written by Harlan Ellison as well as writing for the MMORPG, The Matrix On-line.

By doing so, this streamlined digital delivery method robs audiences of iconic images like The Doors self-titled album, Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, Robert Crumb's work on Janice Joplin's Cheap Thrills, Radiohead's Hail To The Thief and The Beatles' Abbey Road.

These important images no longer get into fans' hands to set the tempo of an album and it's done in the name of progress. Whats left is an anonymous 50x50 pixel icon of... what? No one w/out a microscope knows for sure.

Enter an unlikely answer to this problem of faceless music. Demoscene, a computer art subculture that produces advanced demos and apps - audio-visual presentations that run in real-time on a computer. The main goal of a demo is to show off programming, artistic, and musical skills - apply this to an album release and what do you have? Virtual Viynl.

With these interactive MP3 players, a label or a band can take all the imagery that would normally go into an album and re-purpose it for a "virtual" album release. All photography, video and music elements once commodified as a website, CD-ROM, DVD or "enhanced" CD are now available as a downloadable application much in the same way a MP3 album is - only with all art and video included. In fact, in order to maximize the release a Demo can contain a full MP3 album for use in iTunes and other MP3 player applications.

And you thought that the music industry was getting less interesting, huh? No way. And to further that point web sites such as The White Stripes, Flaming Lips and The Black Angels feature on-line multimedia galleries in a way that even 5 years ago seemed impossible.

2008's "Introducing Hanggai", also reviewed on LoBF, seemed to be a once in a generation album of inspired ethnic Chinese ballads and traditional war songs from Mongolia in the north and far west of mainland China.

The Bejing group's follow up album takes everything that Hanggai did well on Introducing and improves upon it in many undeniable ways: the unmistakably powerful combination of master musicians, lyrical reflections of the ancient horse culture of Mongolia, and the sheer urgency of their performance continue to make Hanngai an internationally sought after group.

When a band like The Strokes suddenly pave the way for rock revival in America people take notice. The band's debut record "This Is It" sold 50,000 copies it's first week in 2001, and 2 million copies by 2003. The Strokes, an "underground" band often seen as a loss by major labels, single handedly opened doors for The White Stripes and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs for nation wide audiences with their over-whelming success.

Enter the unlikeliest tribute Strokes band, or possibly any tribute band that has taken original music in another direction, The Diff'rent Strokes. In 2002, U.K. label Guided Missile released a four track note-for-note synth-pop cover of "This Is It" entitled "This Isn't It". Widely regarded as "bad" by critics it is however very entertaining and at times awe-inspiring.

If you possessed the power of hearing in the 1990's the odds are that you were subjected to a whole lotta "grunge" music but mostly Nirvana. The 2009 official release of the 1992 performance at the Reading Festival in England features live performances from the Nevermind and Bleach albums with Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl in full-on frenzy. Bassist Krist Novoselic (who started Nirvana with Kurt as a CCR cover band) displays his own skill-set that drove many of the band's signature songs.

There are a few genuine treasures on the 22-track release including The Money Will Roll Right which can be interpreted as a reaction to the hype that surrounded Cobain in his early and final days in rock 'n roll.

Ohio natives Heartless Bastards will be playing in Indy in February 18th 2012.

The Heartless Bastards are a power trio whose members have taken a no-frills approach to life and music. Singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Erika Wennerstrom and her brother were raised by a single mom in Dayton, Ohio.

Wennerstrom discovered her interest in music at a young age, but she always preferred writing her own songs as opposed to singing Disney tunes in school productions. Wennerstrom dropped out of her Catholic high school her senior year, and began concentrating more on music. After a few years of working dead-end jobs in Dayton, Wennerstrom moved to Cincinnati, where she met bassist Mike Lamping, who was working at his family's janitorial supply company.

Wennerstrom and Lamping began performing around town as the Heartless Bastards, and quickly added drummer and pizza delivery man Kevin Vaughn to the lineup. The band began to tour, its music rooted in and heavily influenced by garage punk (MC5), indie rock (At the Drive-In), soul (Otis Redding), roots rock (Neil Young), and blues (Leadbelly). The Heartless Bastards eventually were signed to Fat Possum Records, which released both the band's 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators, and it's break through follow-up album All This Time, a year later, continuing with The Mountain in 2009. Arrow, the group's new album will be released on February 14th 2012.

The Heartless Bastards will also be appearing at the beautiful Madison on Northern Kentucky on February 17th and one of best venues in Indianapolis Radio, Radio on February 18th.

A Happy Christmas to you happy campers with something real special for this fine Christmas season - The Clash's fourth studio album, Sandinista originally released in 1980. The album was named after a grass-roots revolutionary party formed in Nicaragua that eventually became the ruling government after many years of struggle. The album was released while the Sandinista were actively fighting in the hills for power against the remnants of the previous regime.

The 36 song collection was re-released in 1990 as contemporary bands that The Clash toured with in the 70's and 80's had begun fading away due to bitter in-fighting and sheer exhaustion. By 1990, The Ramones had played nearly 2,000 shows and the lead singer for DK, Jello Biafra, was being sued by his own band for a quarter of million dollars plus legal expenses.

This three-disc collection collects some of the best and most over-looked anthems inspired by Combat Rock and London Calling including: Career Opportunities, Silicone On Sapphire and The Police On My Back, a searing political song originally by punk-reggae outfit The Equals in 1965.

The Clash were definitive of rock's evolution away from trippy, folkie, hippie jam bands that dominated 1970's rock culture. Instead of cheap moccasins or blue suede shoes they rocked the scuffed combat boots and sung about survival in the DMZ of urban England. Turns out, a lot of kids could relate.

London Calling laid out ignored social troubles, a sense of being a helpless individual caught in the rusty gears of society, dirty politics and living in the middle of drug epidemics. Joel Strummer, the driving force behind the group, reacted by forging real anthems against any and all of these urban obstacles.

For a great many people - this was the story of their lives. The Clash's landmark London Calling album from 1977 turned these untold stories of struggle against local and international corruption (The Guns Of Brixton, Death Or Glory) over sometimes overly glossy production techniques but always with raw emotion. Songs like Lost In The Supermarket are fun and witty while also looking at widespread, crass commercialism or modern consumerism as societal means to temporarily satisfy deeper human needs.

The Dave Clark Five named after drummer Dave Clark, formed in England from 1957 to 1962. The DC5 incorporated the new genre of rock 'n roll with psychedelic and surf music into their own musical brand. The Dave Clark's Five monster debut album was enough to knock The Beatle's "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the UK singles charts in January 1964.

Forty Four years later, in March of 2008, The Dave Clark Five was officially inducted into The Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame. Singer and keyboard player Mike Smith, who'd been with the band since he was 18 years old, had died 11 days before the induction ceremony at the age of 64.

The band has announced plans to release a double-disc collecting Passover and Directions To See A Ghost called Another Nice Pair in the near future.

The Black Angels are regulars of music festivals including the Austin Psychedelic Music Fest and SXWS and tour nationally at historic clubs like Southgate House in northern Kentucky and Ziggys in North Carolina. The band plans on being at the next Austin Psyche Fest coming up in April of 2012.

John Lennon's anti-war community building activities make him an "enemy of the state" from 1968-1975.

David Leaf and John Scheinfeld, two directors who've made their careers by presenting the lives of entertainers like Elvis, Bette Midler, Sinatra and the Beach Boys, made a definitive documentary on the former Beatle that premiered at the Toronto Film Fest in 2006. This A+ documentary features interviews with those closest to Lennon and exhaustive research including reviewing John Lennon's F.B.I. file prepared by J. Edgar Hoover and sent to the Office Of The President Of The United States Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixson during the height of the Viet Nam War.

The U.S. vs John Lennon searches Lennon's sphere of influence by interviewing a startling amount of legendary and historical figures, lawyers, musicians and activists. This list features: Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale, anchorman Walter Cronkite, John Lennon's immigration lawyer Leon Wildes, reporter Geraldo Rivera, Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, excerpts from benefit concerts with activists Jerry Rubin and Abby Hoffman, with surprisingly warm-hearted narration from Yoko Ono and many more.

This out-standing documentary takes the many political struggles that Lennon chose to fight and follows the Nixon administration's covert efforts to silence the anti-war community that he and his followers had helped create and foster into political reality (26th Amendment, Freeing John Sinclair). Leaf and Scheinfeld present the whole of Lennon's trumped up deportation battle based on a marijuana conviction in England during his time as a Beatle.

Bob Dylan's letter sent during in 1972 to The U.S. Immigration And Naturalization Service stated: "John and Yoko add a great voice and drive to the country’s so-called art institution. They inspire and transcend and stimulate and by doing so, only help others to see pure light and in doing that, put an end to this dull taste of petty commercialism which is being passed off as Artist Art by the overpowering mass media. Hurray for John and Yoko. Let them stay and live here and breathe. The country’s got plenty of room and space."

After three years of hearings, Lennon won his American citizenship by saying "Time wounds all heels". The documentary ends with his assassination in front of his building, The Dakota, at One West 72nd Street in New York City on December 10th of 1980.

Japanese Spider-Man's main power is baffling the enemy with the unlikelihood of his premise.

In 1978, Marvel lent the rights to franchise character to Toei Studios (Fist Of The North Star, Devil Man, Ghost In The Shell) who were still mainly a kid's TV animation studio in the late 1970's. Toei pronounced ("toe-ay") produced a live action version of Spider-Man and used the Japanese kid's TV formula of giant robots, colorful vehicles and full-body costumes to create something utterly bizarre and entertaining.

For 41 episodes, the show had a pretty unremarkable two year run on Japanese TV but received high praise from Spider-Man co-creator, Stan Lee, who praised the show for it's special effects and expert stunt work. A theatrical version of Spider-Man was shown at the Toei Manga Matsuri film festival on July 22nd 1979 before the show went off the air in 1980.

In 2010, Marvel has subtitled many episodes of the show and re-released this original series as web based video on the official Marvel site.

The manga and animated series The Full Metal Alchemist has reached a level of international readership that only a few Japanese titles have achieved over the past 50 years.

The short list includes Otomo's Astro-Boy, Okamura's Fist Of The North Star and Ken Miura's Berserk. Each are undeniably in this world class of artist category. Today, Hiromu Arakawa, is the only female manga-ka artist to reach this level to date. She introduced the world to Full Metal Alchemist in 1999 in self-published books (Dōjinshi) and locally produced manga magazines (Tankōbon) published in Hokkaido.

Her graphic novel series ran from 1999 to 2011, faithfully reproduced by Funamation Studios as two animated series, featured the Elric Brothers in a European steam-punk country ruled by magicians. Silver Jews were an indie rock band from NYC formed in 1989 by David Berman along with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Berman remained throughout and was the only constant member. They disbanded in 2009.

Silver Jew is a documentary film by Michael Tully and Matthew Robison about Berman and his band. Shot in just three days with no production budget, the film finds the band in Israel playing two shows in Tel Aviv during their first world tour in the summer of 2006 for the album American Water.

New Moon is a 2-CD/2-LP compilation album by Elliott Smith (1969-2003), released in May of 2007 by Kill Rock Stars. It contains 24 previously unreleased songs recorded between 1994 and 1997. New Moon peaked at number 39 in the UK and number 24 in the U.S. selling about 24,000 copies in it's first week.

A significant portion of the sales proceeds went directly to Outside In, a social service agency for low-income adults and homeless youth in Portland, Oregon, the city where Smith resided for a major portion of his life as a performer and perpetual outcast.

To no one's great shock, Smith suffered from depression, alcoholism, and drug addiction. These topics often appeared in his lyrics. At age 34, he died in Los Angeles from two stab wounds to the chest.

Although primarily categorized as blue grass the band encompasses a blend of blue grass, "old time" music, alt-country, folk, blues, ragtime, and rockabilly.

The Devil Makes Three will be appearing at beautiful The 21st Century Theater in Cincinnati (Oakley) on the 3rd of November and at Radio Radio in downtown Indy (off Prospect St.) on Saturday the 5th.
