ישראל בפיתה

אנחנו הישראלים זן מיוחד. לא שאני חושבת שאנחנו טובים, חכמים או מוצלחים יותר מאשר הסובבים אותנו, אלא שלא משנה באיזו מדינה בחרנו לחיות או לגור בה לכמה שנים תמיד נחפש את המוכר לנו. אותו "המוכר" הוא חברים ישראלים, תרבות ישראלית שמדי פעם מגיעה (זמרים, קומיקאים וכד') אבל הדבר שהכי מדבר אלינו והדבר אליו אנחנו הכי הכי מתגעגעים הוא האוכל הישראלי. אני לא מתכוונת לארוחות משפחתיות או למנגל בפארק הירקון, אלא למה שנקרא "אוכל רחוב ישראלי". לא משנה כמה האנגלים ינסו, השווארמה שלהם תמיד תראה (לי לפחות) כמו גוש שומן שנמצא על המוט יותר מדי זמן, השיפודים לעולם לא יונחו בלאפה שמצליחה להחזיק את כל תכולתה וגם להיות טעימה בו זמנית, ועל החומוס אין בכלל מה לדבר, הוא בכלל לא מתקרב לטעם המופלא של החומוס בארץ (יסלחו לי חובבי חומוס הקופסא). לנו הישראלים אוכל הוא דבר שלא עושים ממנו הרבה טררם אבל הוא חייב להיות מעולה! כולם מכירים את הסביח בפרישמן, את פלאפל הקוסם, ושאר נקודות ציון קולינריות הפזורות בכל הארץ וכמובן הויכוח הניטש אצל מי השווארמה הכי טעימה.

בשבת האחרונה, לאחר לילה נטול שינה לחלוטין משום שפיצקוש החליט ש 2 בלילה זה זמן מעולה להתחיל בו את היום שלו, היה לנו יום ישראלי למהדרין. בבוקר נפגשנו עם כמה זוגות חברים וילדיהם במרכז היהודי החדש והסופר מפואר שנפתח בשכונת ווסט המפסטד ( שכונה שדומה במקצת לרמת אביב, לא "בועטת" כמו תל אביב, אבל יש מה לעשות בה).הגענו לשיעור מוסיקה שנערך לילדים ואנחנו עם עיניים טרוטות שינה ורצון עז להשתחל בחזרה למיטה... התפנקנו בקפה ובילינו את השעה הקרובה בשירת שירים עליהם גדלנו גם אנחנו.

הבוקר עבר לו והגיעה שעת ארוחת הצהריים. כל מה שהתחשק לי (פרט מלחזור למיטה) הוא לאכול, ולא, אני לא מתכוונת לבשל עכשיו שום דבר. לפני כמה חודשים נפתח מקום קטן עליו כבר יצא לי לשמוע המון המלצות מכמה אנשים- "שניצל". כמה שזה בא לי בזמן, ב 10 דקות הליכה בין המרכז היהודי למסעדה פנטזתי על שניצל בפיתה, ועל החומוס שנוזל מהצדדים...יאמי! כמה כיף שיש ישראלים שלוקחים את כל עניין האוכל ברצינות ומצליחים להביא לנו את הטעמים מהארץ שאנחנו כל כך אוהבים.

"שניצל" בבעלות זוג ישראלים נחמדים ביותר הוא מקום די קטן שנמצא במרכז העניינים של ווסט המפסטד המכיל כ 15 מקומות ישיבה בפנים ועוד כ 10 מקומות במרפסת, עיצוב מינימאלי, קופה רושמת ובר סלטים בדיוק כמו בארץ. חייבת להודות שלא הסתכלתי בכלל בתפריט ובאופן הכי טבעי פשוט הזמנתי: פעמיים שניצל בפיתה שבתוכה: חומוס טחינה, סלט, סלט כרוב וקצת חריף, צ'יפס אחד וקולה (18 פאונד). שאר החברים שלנו הגיעו גם כן ומילאנו כולנו את חלל המסעדה. כולם הזמינו את המנות שלהם, שניצל בצלחת, חזה עוף, צ'יפס בטטה וכד' והכול עם שירות לקוחות בעברית וחמימות נעימה של בעלי המקום. כולנו ליקקנו את האצבעות, בדיוק כמו בארץ!

השבת הזו הרגישה כמו גיחה קצרה לארץ רק בלי כל הבלגן שבטיסה, חבר'ה ישראלים, שירים בעברית של ילדות ישראלית ושניצל אחד בפיתה שהרגיש הכי בבית שיש. אפשר לבקש יותר מזה?

SUSHI AND I’M BACK

I’m sitting in front of an empty Word document and all I can think about is how much I missed this! I missed going out to restaurants, taking pictures, enjoying the experience, taste and smell food, chatting with the waiters and the owners, thinking what could be interesting to eat and write about… so here I’m back, after a (too long) time off, and after many requests to return to writing, here I am.

Where should I start? Of course I need to give a short explanation where did I go and what was I up to in all the period that I didn’t write – in a word, the answer is Mummy. I spent the beginning of my pregnancy in sleeping, and after that I simply didn’t have the passion to start explore places, but just wanted to go to eat at the same good places I already knew. Many times, I just went for a quick fill… After the little guy was born, I didn’t find the time and will to get dressed up, get on a train and go to one of London’s fabulous restaurants. So why am I back now? Because I have some time between the little guy’s nursery and my other stuff, so why not return to and old and fun hobby?

September is a festive month in our small family. My birthday, and the little guy’s, and me and my beloved’s anniversary, all happen in this month. In addition we also celebrated Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) with my mother coming to London for a visit. Who am I to miss so many opportunities to party? I booked us a table in advance (a month and a half ahead of time) at one of the best-spoken places I heard about recently, Sushi Samba (link). Some of you might know the name, and some of you might laugh and say ‘This place has been around for a while… it’s that Israeli guy’s place…’ – indeed, this is a chain that has a couple of branches in the U.S (New York and Las Vegas) and even in Tel Aviv – but there’s a difference.

I didn’t visit the New York restaurant (yet), and I’ve been to the Israeli one when it just opened, and I don’t remember a particularly cheerful experience. But, and it’s an important But, the London branch takes many other restaurants for a ride. Just like I would describe a potential partner to one of your friends – ‘Sushi Samba’ has all the attributes of a successful match:

Location: Central; View: Impressive-Amazing; Access: Tube station meters away from the restaurant; Atmosphere: Urban Chic. What’s so unique about it? The especially quick jump of the lift that takes you to the 38^th floor of Heron Tower (link), and the very special food they serve here. A winning combination of Japanese, Peruvian, and Spanish food does sound a bit strange, but who said that marriage between different factions isn’t interesting?

As I mentioned before, I booked the table about a month and a half in advance, and even so, there were no slots for dinner and also not for lunch, so we found ourselves at 15:30, after the little guy’s swimming lesson, on our way to the City, armed with hunger (chlorine always makes me extra hungry) and quite a lot of excitement in our hearts – it’s been a while since we went to a place with so much hype.

We got the menus. My mother doesn’t understand what is she doing in a restaurant that serves sushi, my beloved is busy with the little guy who’s flirting with all the waitresses and hostesses, and only I am busy trying to figure out what would be cooler and different from what I had in other places, without leaving a hole in our wallet (not an easy task). I got full authority to order what-ever I want! The basic principles at ‘Sushi Samba’ are sharing platters and no particular order for the dishes – they come as they’re ready. For 3 people, it’s best to order 2 starters, 2-3 middle courses and one main. I signaled the waiter and just improvised between my desire to diversify my experience, my mother’s concerns from raw fish rolled in rice, food that the little guy could also sample, and something to please my beloved who claims that sushi is not food. Making all these decisions was quite tiring, but at the end I was able to find a balance between the requests from around the table.

Shall we begin? For starters, I ordered shrimps tempura in spicy mayo and black truffles vinaigrette (£ 13). The dish included many prawns so there were no doubts and no cross-staring as all people who share the dish put their chopsticks into the plate again and again. The little guy also got the first taste of shrimp in his life, and it seems we share a taste for the new and interesting.

The starter that rocked our world was glazed pork wraps with palmetto, orange and bib lettuce (£ 12). You could see the salt crystals on the plate, just one example to the attention to detail in preparing this perfect nibble. You can’t really start taking small bites out of a dish that is of the size of a single bite exploding with tastes, so it’s not worth wasting time trying to engineer the next bite every time.

While sitting, we are drinking and enjoying a bottle of Brut that sparkles in our mouth just like a Brut should, without putting any strain on the taste. Personally, I never got along with combining Asian food and wines, so I gave up on wine in this meal. Needless to say, my glass looked as if I’m not drinking at all, because the waiter jumped at me with every sip and tried to re-fill my glass. A bit scary, but at some point he understood that I don’t appreciate his stalking…

Another starter was gyoza (£ 12). I have to say that this was a rather dull dish, that wasn’t any different than other gyozas that I tried in less impressive restaurants, or in Chinese street eateries that take themselves seriously and make proper dumplings. Here, it was nice, but not more than that.

The headline was the main course of this lovely afternoon. On a tray with steaming hot stones, we got 3 pieces of meat that were scorched in the most accurate way I’ve seen recently. Those were pieces of rib eye, reddish chorizo, and another piece of rump steak (£ 42). The meat wasn’t fatty at all, but was soft and smooth in the mouth. On the platter we got chimichuri sauce, steamed green leaves, fried bread crumbs (for the crunch), tomato and pepper salad, and a dream-like beans dish. No need to say that the platter was destroyed in no time. My mother licked her fingers, my beloved didn’t put his fork down for a second (and this is hard when you have a 1-year old kid to entertain/chase/feed etc), and the little guy asked for more and more chorizo even though it was spicy.

Presentation rules at Sushi Samba, and with every tray of sushi that passed in front of my eyes (and there were quite a few), my desire for sushi just grew. Since I wasn’t with in sushi-appreciating company, I ordered the simple rolls that I imagined will be accepted relatively easily: One crunchy red tuna roll (£ 12) and two hand rolls with shrimp tempura, coriander, spicy mayonnaise and red onion (£ 13). The surprise was that the hand roll weren’t rolled in algae, but it what looked like an extra thin and transparent omelette. Delicious!! Is it needless to say, everybody including everybody licked their fingers ?!?

The sweet taste had to lead into a dessert. The waiter recommended the cheese cake warmly (£ 13). How much can you innovate with a cheese cake… I thought about it and said oh well. We didn’t feel like having chocolate (too heavy), and all the sorts of puddings that appeal to the British crowds aren’t our taste. What did I say before about presentation? I’m sure you imagined a triangular crumbs cake again, but this is not what came out this time. The artwork oh sorry… the cheesecake was placed on the table and we stared at it in awe for a while. The cake itself was placed inside a transparent sugar ball, which rested on a mountain of sweetened crumbs, vanilla ice-cream, strawberry jelly, drops of granite, and a gentle orange zest.

It wasn’t cheap, but so worth the price. The four of us had an extraordinary time, a first class culinary experience, and with no expectations up front. Very recommended if you’re willing to refresh your mouth with plenty of new tastes, and if you are not afraid of heights J

סושי וחזרתי!

אני יושבת מול מסמך ריק וכל מה שאני מצליחה לחשוב עליו הוא כמה התגעגעתי! התגעגעתי לצאת למסעדות, לצלם, לחוות, לטעום ולהריח, לפטפט עם מלצרים ובעלי המקום, לחשוב מה יהיה מקורי ומעניין לאכול ולכתוב עליו...אז הנה, חזרתי, אחרי היעדרות ארוכה (מדי!) ואחרי המון פניות לשוב ולכתוב, הנה אני פה.

ממה אתחיל? כמובן שיש צורך בהסבר קצר לאן נעלמתי ומה עשיתי בכל התקופה בה לא כתבתי- במילה אחת- אמא. את תחילת ההריון שלי ביליתי בשינה, ולאחר מכן פשוט לא היה לי חשק להתחיל ולחקור מקומות אלא פשוט ללכת ולאכול באותם המקומות המוכרים והטובים. וכן, גם אני חטאתי באמירה הידועה "בא לי לאפה". לאחר הלידה של פיצקוש לא מצאתי את הזמן והחשק כדי להתלבש יפה, להיכנס לרכבת ולנסוע למסעדות המדהימות שיש בלונדון. אז למה עכשיו אני חוזרת? כי יש לי קצת זמן בין הגן של פיצקוש לשאר עיסוקי, ולמה לא לחזור לתחביב ישן וכיפי?

ספטמבר הוא חודש רווי שמחות במשפחה הקטנה שלנו. יום ההולדת שלי ושל פיצקוש וגם יום הנישואין שלי ושל האהוב. בנוסף לכל אלו גם חגגנו את ראש השנה עם הגעתה של אמא שלי לביקור בלונדון. מי אני שתפספס הזדמנויות כל רבות לחגיגות?הזמנתי לכולנו מקומות מבעוד מועד (חודש וחצי מראש) לארוחה באחד המקומות החדשים היותר מדוברים בתקופה האחרונה "סושי סמבה". אני יודעת שלרבים מכם השם מוכר ואתם מגחכים ואומרים "בישראל המסעדה הזו קיימת כבר עשור" או "שוב סושי?" "נו זו המסעדה של הבחור הישראלי הזה....". נכון- גם בתל אביב ובנקודות מרכזיות בארה"ב יש סניף של הרשת הזו (ניו יורק ולאס וגאס), אבל יחי ההבדל הקטן.

במסעדה הניו יורקית טרם הייתי, ובזו הישראלית הייתי בתקופת ההרצה בחודש הראשון, ולא זכורה לי חוויה מרנינה במיוחד. אבל, וזהו אבל גדול, הסניף הלונדוני לוקח הרבה מסעדות בכיס הקטן. ממש כמו שמתארים לבחור בחורה שרוצים להכיר לו - יש ל"סושי סמבה" את כל הקריטריונים לשידוך מוצלח:

המיקום:מרכזי, הנוף: מהמם עד מטריף, נגישות: הטיוב במרחק של כמה מטרים מהמסעדה, אווירה: שיקית ואורבנית. מה כל כך ייחודי? זינוק מהיר במיוחד במעלית אל הקומה ה38 של Heron Tower , והאוכל הכל כך מיוחד שמגישים פה. שילוב מנצח של אוכל יפני פרואני וספרדי נשמע קצת מוזר, אבל מי אמר שנישואין בין עדות שונות הם לא מעניינים?

כפי שכבר ציינתי, את המקומות הזמנתי כחודש וחצי מראש, וגם אז לא היו מקומות לארוחת ערב וגם לא לצהריים, כך שמצאנו את עצמנו בשעה 15:30 אחרי חוג השחייה של פיצקוש בדרכנו לעיר, חמושים ברעב (כלור תמיד גרם לי לתחושת רעב מתקדמת) והרבה התרגשות בלב - הרי הרבה זמן לא יצאנו למסעדה עם הייפ כזה.

קיבלנו את התפריטים. אמא שלי לא ממש מבינה מה היא עושה במסעדה בה אוכלים סושי, האהוב עסוק עם פיצקוש שמפלרטט עם כל המלצריות והמארחות ורק אני עסוקה בלהבין מה יותר מגניב ושונה ממה שאכלתי במקומות אחרים מבלי לקרוע את הכיס (משימה די קשה). קיבלתי אוטוריטה מוחלטת להזמין מה שבא לי!. העיקרון של "סושי סמבה" הוא צלחות חלוקה ושאין סדר למנות- מה שמוכן יוצא. עבור שלושה אנשים רצוי להזמין 2 מנות פתיחה, 2-3 מנות אמצע ועיקרית אחת. קראתי למלצר ופשוט אלתרתי בין הרצון העז שלי לגיוון, לבין החששות של אמא שלי מפני דגים נאים מגולגלים באורז, לבין אוכל שגם פיצקוש יוכל לדגום, ומשהו משביע לאהוב שטוען שסושי זה לא אוכל. כל הסיפור היה די מתיש אבל לבסוף הצלחתי לאזן בין כל הבקשות מסביב.

שנתחיל? למנות פתיחה הזמנתי שרימפס טמפורה ברוטב ספייסי מיונז ופיטריות כמהין שחורות (13 פאונד). המנה כללה המון שרימפסים כך שלא היו ספקות ולא היו מבטים מצטלבים בין כל החולקים המקרבים את הצ'ופסטיקס לצלחת שוב ושוב. גם הפיצקוש זכה לטעום שרימפס לראשונה בחייו ונראה שיש לנו עסק עם חובב טעמים מגוונים ומיוחדים.

מנת הפתיחה שהרטיטה את עולמינו היתה ריבועי חזיר מזוגגים ברוטב תפוזים ובצל סגול מוחמץ מונח על עלה חסה(12 פאונד). ניתן היה להבחין במלח הגבישי ותשומת הלב לפרטים בהכנה של הביס המושלם הזה. אי אפשר באמת להתחיל ולקחת ביסים קטנים ממנה שהיא בגודל ביס שפשוט מפוצץ בטעמים, אז חבל לבזבז זמן בניסיון להנדס את הנגיסה הבאה בכל פעם.

תוך כדי שאנחנו יושבים, אנחנו שותים ומתענגים מבקבוק ברוט שמתפצפץ בפה בדיוק כמו שברוט אמור לעשות, ומבלי להכביד בטעם. באופן אישי, מעולם לא הסתדרתי עם השילוב בין אוכל אסייתי ויינות, ולכן ויתרתי מראש על יין בארוחה הנוכחית. מיותר לציין שהכוס שלי נראתה כאילו שאני לא שותה בכלל, משום שהמלצר עט לכיווני עם כל שלוק ששתיתי. קצת מטריד אבל מתישהו הוא הבין שהוא קצת מציק.....

מנת פתיחה נוספת היתה גיוזה(12 פאונד). יש לומר שזו מנה די משעממת שלא היתה שונה בהרבה מגיוזות אחרות שיצא לי לטעום במסעדות פחות מרשימות או במסעדת רחוב סינית שמכבדת את עצמה ומכינה דמפלינג כמו שצריך. חביב, אך לא יותר מזה.

גולת הכותרת היתה המנה העיקרית של אחר צהריים לבבי זה. על מגש ועליו אבנים לוחשות הוגשו 3 נתחי בשר שנצרבו במידה הכי מדויקת שראיתי בתקופה האחרונה. אלו היו נתחי ריב- איי, נקניקיית צ'וריסו אדמדמה ונתח נוסף של ראמפ סטייק (42 פאונד). הבשר לא היה שומני כלל, אלא היה רך ונימוח. על הפלטה הוגשו רוטב צ'ימיצ'ורי, עלים ירוקים מוקפצים, פרורי לחם מטוגנים (בשביל הקרנצ'), סלט עגבניות ופלפלים ובנוסף תבשיל שעועית חלומי. מיותר לומר שהפלטה חוסלה במהירות הבזק. אמא שלי ליקקה את האצבעות, האהוב לא הניח לשנייה את המזלג (וזה קשה כשיש ילד בן שנה לבדר /לרדוף אחרי/ להאכיל וכד'), והפיצקוש ביקש עוד ועוד צ'וריסו למרות החריפות.

בסושי סמבה הפרזנטציה מנצחת ועם כל מגש סושי שעבר לי מול העיניים (והיו המון כאלו) החשק לסושי רק הלך וגבר. מכיוון שישבתי בחברה לא אוהדת סושי הזמנתי את הרולים הפשוטים ושדמה היה לי שיתקבלו בברכה יחסית. רול אחד של טונה אדומה עם קרנצ' (12 פאונד) ושני הנד רול שרימפס טמפורה עם ספייזי מיונז, פטרוזליה ובצל סגול (13 פאונד). ההפתעה היתה שההנד רול לא היו מגולגלים באצה אלא במה שהיה נראה כמו חביתה דקה דקה ושקופה. מעדן!!! מיותר לציין שכולם כולל כולם ליקקו את האצבעות?!?

את המתוק בפה חייבים לסיים עם קינוח. המלצר המליץ מאוד על עוגת גבינה (13פאונד). כמה כבר אשר לחדש עם עוגת גבינה....הרהרתי ואמרתי נו בסדר. שוקולד לא בא לנו (כבד) וכל מיני פודינגים שפונים לקהל האנגלי גם לא עושים לנו את זה. מה אמרתי קודם על פרזנטציה? בטח דמיינתם שוב משולש עוגת פירורים, ממש לא במקרה הזה. יצירת האומנות אה אופס... עוגת הגבינה הונחה על השולחן ויראי כבוד שכמותנו בהינו בה במשך דקה ארוכה. העוגה עצמה הונחה בתוך כדור סוכר מנופח שהונח על הר פירורים ממותקים, גלידת וניל , ג'לי תות, טפטופי גרניטה וגרידת תפוז מעודנת.

היה לא זול אבל כל כך שווה את המחיר. ארבעתנו נהנינו בצורה בלתי רגילה, חוויה קולינרית מהשורה הראשונה וכל זה עם מעט מאוד ציפיות מראש. מומלץ מאוד למי שמוכן לרענן את חלל הפה עם המון טעמים חדשים ולמי שאינו סובל מפחד גבהים (:

ספיישל- תחרות לביבות

מאז שאני זוכרת את עצמי תמיד אהבתי לביבות. אני אוהבת את תהליך ההכנה שלהן שכל המשפחה יכולה להשתתף בו, את הפרצוף המצחיק של מי שטועם את הבלילה הלא מבושלת וכמובן את התוצר המוגמר. אצלנו בבית אבא שלי היה אמון על המשימה בכל חג חנוכה (ולפעמים סתם כשמתחשק), כי אמא פשוט מעולם לא הצליחה להגיע לטקסטורה הנכונה של תפוחי האדמה ורמת הטיגון שהיא השילוב המדויק בין לביבה בעלת צבע זהוב וקראנצ'יות מנצחת. הלביבות שאבא הכין היו הכי הכי פשוטות- תפוח אדמה מגורר בפומפייה, קמח, ביצה, מלח ופלפל.

עם השנים התחלתי גם אני להכין לביבות, ולשמחתי "ירשתי" את יכולתו הנהדרת של אבא להכין לביבות בדיוק כמוהו. במרוץ הזמן יצא לי לטעום כמה וכמה גרסאות של לביבות בבתים של חברים וכד', אבל תמיד תמיד שמחתי לחזור לטעם המוכר והאהוב עלי מהבית.

בתחרות "קרנבל החנוכה בטפאל", נחשפתי לשלל נאה של מתכונים שונים, עם המון השפעות עדתיות, טיולים בעולם ובעיקר המון אהבה למאכל חג שהוא פשוט מאוד בבסיסו. אהבתי לבישול נובעת מהמון סיבות אבל העיקרית שבהן היא האפשרות לקחת מוצרים בסיסיים לחלוטין ולהצליח להפוך אותם למאכל טעים, מגרה וכזה שמצליח לחבר בין כולם.

המתכון המנצח שלי הוא המתכון של מיכל אנגלנדר- לביבות תפוחי אדמה ממולאות בבשר. מיכל סיפרה שהיא למדה את המתכון מאמא של חברה, ושהלביבות שלה הן בעצם ארוחה! כולנו מכירים את הערבים שהזמינו אותנו להדלקת נרות, וכל מה שהונח על השולחן היו סופגניות ולביבות, ובסוף הערב כולם רעבים? לדעתי הלביבות של מיכל יצליחו לפתור את הבעיה וכמובן לקצור מחמאות רבות.

‘PIZZA EAST’ IN THE EAST END

Did you think that we visited the Brick Lane area without going to a restaurant after all the wonderful displays we saw at the Experimental Food show ? Right! You probably know me well enough by now, of course we went to a restaurant and let me tell you here and now how good was it!

We reached PIZZA EAST following a recommendation by a friend/employer of mine. TL was so excited about the food, the service and the decor at this place, so there’s no chance that I was going to miss such an experience myself. As soon as we knew that we’re going to spend Saturday in Brick Lane, I jumped on the opportunity and booked a table for 3 (we went with YC, a friend from my beloved’s work). We were lucky to get a table on the same day (in London you normally have to book a few days in advance, especially if you want to go on a Saturday). We got the table from 630 PM, which is a good time to sit for dinner after a whole day of walking and sore feet.

18:00: We arrived a bit early – it started getting too cold to be outside and our stomach is sending signals of distress...

The place is at a very busy road intersection, and the entrance is just at the corner of the street, so it’s very hard to miss. We were received by 2 hostesses – one was checking if the table is already available and the other already taking our coats to the cloakroom. Since we were early, the hostess directed us to the waiting area, which also has (accidentally!) the restaurant’s bar. It’s important to note that there’s a huge table in the waiting area, where you can sit comfortably, sip your wine, and inspect the many kinds of charcuterie, pasta and other products that are offered for sale in this place. We ordered a bottle of Pino Grigio white and started inspecting the restaurant at our leisure.

Pizza East is located in what seems to be an old industrial structure, judging by the naked concrete ceiling, the air-con pipes and the special acoustics. There are numerous seating options for guests – tall bar stools, long shared tables (for 15-20 guests), private booths and of course regular round tables. The lighting is very pleasant, and smell of the food encouraged us to sit and eat no matter on which kind of table.

18:38: YC arrives, we will forgive him this time, after all we already had a few glasses that made us more user-friendly :)

After a quick look at the menu I realized straight away that this is a no-nonsense place and the chef knows exactly what he’s doing. How do I know that just by looking at the menu? You should know: When-ever you get a massively long menu with a huge range of dishes, it’s a sign that: 1. The place doesn’t specialize in anything; 2. Most chances are that the ingredients in the fridges are not exactly fresh; 3. It is better to get up and find another place to have dinner.

Back to our topic, the menu included a nice variety of antipasti, pizza and meat (inc. charcuterie) dishes, as well as a totally acceptable number of side dishes and salads. Within a few minutes we all decided on the target of our gluttony for tonight, so we signalled the waiter that we have reached a decision and it’s time to see what they know to make here at Pizza East.

For starters the three of us shared a Board out of the Counter selection – we went for Prosciutto, Gorgonzola and Pecorino (£13).

We added a huge salad with excellent goat’s cheese (£6.5), additionally we got a basket of home-made breads that were very fresh and also included olive bread that I so love dipping in the salad’s dressing.

19:15: I think I realized what this lovely restaurant is about only now that the mains arrived. They don’t play any games here, they don’t make people pay good money for small dishes or like you sometimes get ‘food samples’ on your plate. The generosity that just appeared in front of us will not shame any Italian mama and will certainly not leave anybody hungry.

Our friend YC ordered a pizza. According to him, in a place that proudly has the word Pizza as part of its name, there’s no chance in the world that he will miss this dish. YC was astonished by the size of his veal meatballs pizza (£12). In addition to the veal, they also added prosciutto and cream. Sounds weird – I must admit that the picture I took is not the most flattering to the dish (darkness and an I-Phone camera aren’t necessarily the best combination), but hey – it was so good! The dough was thin and crispy at the end, the veal was soft and mushy, the prosciutto added a gentle touch of saltiness, and the cream...what can be not good about cream ?!?

My beloved didn’t waste time as well, and as focused as only he can be, he announced in front of us and the Pizza as his witnesses, that tonight he will eat the Rib-eye steak accompanied by bone marrow and borlotti beans (Italian to the end). I won’t mince words here, the steak was grilled perfectly, only looking at it increased the activity of our drooling glands, and I think I will let the picture speak for itself.

Finally, I ordered one of the dishes I learned to appreciate and love since we moved to London – the Crispy Pork Belly. This is a slice which has a totally crispy top (called Crackling), and a very soft and smooth meaty part underneath. This slice requires relatively long cooking and is a very good fit to cold days when your body simply wants warm and homey food (without cooking at home that day). The meat was accompanied by beans and mashed potatoes which were very garlicky – too much for my taste. Should I mention that I wasn’t able to finish it? Stinginess (as in small portions) is not a known word for the folks at Pizza East, and we learned that you should arrive to this restaurant when you’re hungry, and maybe even consider sharing dishes, otherwise it’s very difficult to deal with the quantity of food on your plate.

20:00: The place is already full, noise and clamour all around us, a very young and lively atmosphere. Turns out there’s a live music club in the basement floor, where local bands that one day we might hear about them are playing – which brings a huge mass of people in to eat something before the show. The waiter comes to us and asks politely if we finished eating (since there were some leftovers) and if we want to order desserts, because there are people that will be happy to receive our table! Quite annoying I must say; we’ll stick to our table until our due time what-ever happens! (we have the table until 20:30 according to our order).

The dessert menu was very tempting, and I must admit that we had a real dilemma what to order, because everything looked good! So what do you do when you can’t make your mind? Order 3 desserts and taste all of them.

The first dessert was especially airy doughnuts covered in sugar and cinnamon, which you can dip in hot chocolate. Oh how corrupt, and well done for creating the most airy doughnut I ever had. They didn’t have the horrible taste and after taste of the cooking oil, and it was very easy to spot straight away the freshness and attention that went into preparing this dessert.

YC fancied the baked cheesecake with fresh figs and a little berries sauce on top. The biscuits were a bit too dry to my taste, but all in all the cake was very good. The part I loved the most about this dessert were the fresh figs, which were bursting with various tastes.

My beloved couldn’t miss chocolate for dessert so he ordered a chocolate and caramel tart, with a little Atlantic salt! If the salt part seems a bit weird, you should know that salt increases the taste of the chocolate, is a very good balance to the strong sweetness of the chocolate and caramel, and doesn’t cause the strong sense of sweetness that is common after you eat serious amounts of chocolate.

20:30: If only the waiter could be less strict about him wanting us to leave the table, it would’ve been a spotless evening...

If we’ll ignore the slightly rushed finish we had, it was a very successful evening, with excellent food, homey, warm, sweet, and with a slight salty taste to enrich the experience. Bella Italia!

סטייק ועוגיות זה יופי

ביום ראשון האחרון התחשק לנו ללכת ולהסתובב באיזור קובנט- גארדן. יש לי חיבה בלתי מוסברת לאיזור שתמיד מצליח להרגיש הכי לונדון שיש. אולי אלו אמני הרחוב שלא מפסיקים להצחיק את העוברים והשבים, אולי אלו חלונות הראווה שנראים מזמינים, או שבעצם זהו אותו נגן הגיטרה שמנגן את השיר האהוב עלי- Streets of London

קובנט גרדן מקסים עוד יותר החל מתחילת חודש נובמבר מאשר כל שאר השנה בזכות אורות חג-המולד שמעטרים כל פינה. האווירה החגיגית לקראת החג מצליחה לחמם את הלב אפילו לנו שלא באמת חוגגים את הולדת ישו או מציינים משהו שקשור לחג פרט למכירות המטורפות שעתידות להתרחש בחנויות.

תוך כדי ההליכה האיטית שלנו הרעב החל לדגדג ולהזכיר לנו שאתמול לא בדיוק אכלנו אוכל אמיתי (טוסט זה לא אוכל) ושאולי כדאי לשבוע לפני ההופעה של שלום חנוך שהתקיימה באותו הערב. נזכרתי בכתבה שקראתי לפני כמה שבועות על מסעדת בשרים שחייבים לבקר בה ושהסיכוי להשיג בה מקום שואף לסיכוי להשגת כרטיס לאולימפיאדה הקרבה. כל הניסיונות שלי להזמין מקום לימי שישי בערב/ שבת בערב וכד' עלו בתוהו, ואנחנו לא ממש אוהבים לשתף פעולה עם המנהג הבריטי של להזמין מקומות שלושה חודשים מראש. איה הספונטניות? החלטתי שהפעם שווה לנסות. אנחנו כבר באיזור, השעה 4 אחה"צ ואולי שווה להגיע ולסמוך על המזל.

16:00: מחפשים את הכתובת באינטרנט של HAWKSMOOR.

16:05: נכנסנו לחלל חשוך דמוי אסם כפרי למראה, שאלנו בחשש אם יש שולחן לשניים לארוחת צהריים- והרי השמחה! יש שולחן! המארחת הובילה אותנו במורד המדרגות המפואר וחלל ענק נפרש בפנינו, חלקו משמש כבר וחלקו השני כמסעדה כמובן. היה באז מהיר וחיוני במקום, המלצרים הידסו במהירות בין השולחנות וכל זאת מבלי לפספס את שלל ההסברים על מבחר המנות והיינות.

מבנה המסעדה מרשים במיוחד. על אחד הקירות יש שלט שמציין שבעבר המבנה שימש כמבשלת שיכר, ושימש כמקום לסעודות פאר כבר החל מ 1807! הקירות בנויים לבנים אדומות ובאמת אפשר לדמיין איך נערכו פה מסיבות וארוחות פאר עם המון אלכוהול ובשר טוב.

התיישבנו בשולחן שהיה צמוד לחדר היינות, הנוף המועדף על שנינו (אחרי שהתרגלנו לנוף של מטבחים פתוחים ממסעדות קודמות שביקרנו בהן) - ככה אפשר לבהות ביינות במחירים אסטרונומיים ולדמיין מתי נוכל לשתות יינות שכאלה... אני כמוכנה להסתערות כבר די ידעתי מה בא לי להזמין, כבר המון זמן שלא אכלתי סטייק ראוי ואולי באמת כדאי לעשות זאת במקום שהוכרז כמקום עם הסטייק הטוב ביותר בלונדון (נכון לטיים אאוט 2011). המלצר ניגש והסביר לנו מעט על הבשרים ומה כבר אזל במטבח (זה מה שקורה כשמגיעים בשעה 4 אחר-הצהריים, והמסעדה אינה לוקחת הזמנות לאחר 4 וחצי). לא נורא, בכל מקרה יש את מה שרצינו, ואפילו טוב מכך- הסטייק בו חשקתי הגיע בגודל שגם יש ביכולתי לסיים ולא במשקל 400 גרם, שאין לי סיכוי להתמודד איתו.

בואו נגיע לתכלס, למנה ראשונה הזמנתי ממרח של דג מקרל מתובלן לעילא, לצידו מלפפונים עם רוטב ויניגרט חרדל ומעט שמיר וערימת טוסטים,שטוב היה אם היו שוהים 30 שניות פחות בטוסטר (6£). מאוד נהנתי מממרח הדג, המרקם היה קליל ולא שומני כלל. הטעמים של הדג והתיבול של המלפפונים השתלבו טוב יחד וזו היתה מנת פתיחה קלילה ולא מפוצצת מדי- יש לי עוד מקום לסטייק!

האהוב הזמין רצועות סלמון מעושן ולצידו "דגל תוספות" של ביצה קשה, צלפים בצל סגול (ראו בתמונה כדי להבין למה קראתי לזה "דגל"), ובנוסף 2 פרוסות לחם איכרים טרי (£10.5). טעמתי גם מהסלמון, ואני חייבת לציין שכבר יצא לי לטעום מנות טובות יותר של סלמון, בהן לדג היה טעם מעושן מודגש וניכר יותר. אין ספק שלהזמין דג לפני הבשרים זו בחירה נכונה, ככה לא התפוצצנו מהמנות הראשונות ונותר בנו החשק לבשר שהזמנו.

יש לי נטייה לעיינים גדולות בכל הנוגע למסעדות (נראה לי שניתן להבין זאת בין השורות) אבל אם יש דבר אחד שלמדתי בכל הנוגע לסטייקים- זה שאני צריכה להזמין את הגודל הקטן ככל הניתן הקיים בתפריט. אין דבר יותר מיותר ומבזבז מאשר להזמין סטייק של 400 גרם ולהשאיר יותר מחצי ממנו בצלחת. לכן מאוד שמחתי כשהמלצר אמר לי בתחילה שנשארה רק חתיכה אחת של אנטריקוט בגודל 250 גרם, ידעתי שהסטיק הזה מיועד עבורי ושאני גם מסוגלת להתמודד עם סטייק שכזה. בלי תחכומים מיותרים הזמנתי סטייק אנטריקוט וצ'יפס שהוכן ב- 3 שלבים: ריכוך במים, טיגון ואפייה בתנור (£17.5).

קצת מביך לספר שאנחנו גרים בלונדון כבר קצת יותר משנה וטרם יצא לנו לאכול "צלי יום ראשון" (Sunday Roast). תמיד נראה לנו לא מגרה, גדול מדי, יקר מדי, "בטח מוכן כמה ימים מראש" ושלל תירוצים. הפעם האהוב לא ויתר לעצמו והחליט שהגיע הזמן להיות בריטי אמיתי ולהזמין את הצלי (£19.5). כמות האוכל שהופיעה לאהוב בצלחת הספיקה לגדוד! היו שם: גזרים מאודים, תרד, יורקשייר פודינג (הגוש האפוי שרואים בתמונה), תפוחי אדמה אפויים וכמובן צלי הבקר, ומעל כל זה אמורים לשים גם את רוטב הבשר (גרייבי). על פי דיווחיו של האהוב המנה היתה נהדרת וטעימה ממש. לדעתי הצנועה- למי שאוהב להתמקד בטעם אחד או גג שניים בזמן שהוא אוכל, זה לא בדיוק בשבילו, יש כל כך הרבה דברים על הצלחת שאין מצב לסיים הכל..קצת בזבוז, אלא אם יש לך תיאבון של שני אנשים לפחות.

מיותר לציין שלאורך כל הארוחה נהנננו מיין? הזמנו חצי בקבוק של יין סירה (אדום) אוסטרלי. היין היה עדין ולא אגרסיבי מדי לשעת אחה"צ והיה תוספת נעימה לאוכל, לא כבד מדי ועשיר בטעמים.

17:30: הגענו לשלב הקינוחים. קינוח או בלי קינוח? זו השאלה...מעיון קצר בתפריט הקינוחים ראינו שההשפעה האנגלית המסורתית לא פסחה על הקינוחים, ומה שמוצע בו הם בעיקר קינוחים על בסיס פודינג. שנינו לא בדיוק מאוהדי הפודינג ולכן החלטנו לוותר הפעם ולהתספק בקפה. דאבל אספרסו בבקשה!

שבעים ומאוד מרוצים מהאוכל וגם מהשירות שילמנו את החשבון ולי כבר היה בראש איפה נוכל לאכול את הקינוח שלנו.To make a long story short, בירח הדבש שלנו יצא לנו להתוודע ל- Laduree שם ניתן להשיג עוגיות מקרון (Macaroon) טעימות להחריד ויקרות באותה המידה. כשעברנו ללונדון שמחנו מאוד לגלות שקיימים בעיר שני סניפים של הרשת הצרפתית ואחד מהם בקובנט גרדן. כל פעם שהזדמן לי לחלוק את חיבתי ל-Laduree עם אנשים אחרים, הם עיקמו את אפם למשמע המחיר.. אבל ברגע שטעמו את העוגיות הם מייד הבינו על מה אני מדברת...2 עוגיות לא ריששו אף אחד ולא עשו כל רע (£1.80 לערך, תלוי בעוגיה). תתענגו לא תתחרטו!

חשבתם שביקרנו באיזור בריק ליין מבלי ללכת למסעדה אחרי כל המיצגים המדהימים שראינו בתערוכה? אז יפה! אתם מכירים אותי כבר כמו שצריך, כמובן שהלכנו למסעדה ובואו ואספר לכם כמה שנהנינו שם!

למסעדת "פיצה איסט" ((Pizza East בהגענו בהמלצתה של חברה/בוסית שלי. ט' כל כך התלהבה מהאוכל, השירות ועיצוב במקום, כך שאין סיכוי שהייתי מוותרת על החוויה בעצמי. ברגע שידעתי שאנחנו צפויים לבלות את יום שבת בשכונת בריק ליין מיד קפצתי על ההזדמנות והזמנתי 3 מקומות (הצטרף אלינו י', חבר מהעבודה של האהוב). היה לנו מזל באותו היום והצלחנו להשיג שולחן (בלונדון חייבים להזמין מקומות מראש ועל אחת כמה וכמה ביום שבת), השולחן עמד לרשותנו מהשעה 6 וחצי שזו שעה טובה לאכול בה אחרי יום שלם של הסתובבויות ורגליים עייפות.

18:00: הגענו למסעדה טיפונת מוקדם - התחיל להיות קר מדי להסתובבות בחוץ והבטן כבר משמיעה קולות של רעב.

המסעדה נמצאת בצומת רחובות עמוס מאוד, והכניסה ממוקמת בדיוק בפינת הרחוב כך שקשה מאוד לפספס אותה. בכניסה קיבלו את פנינו 2 מארחות- האחת בודקת אם השולחן פנוי והשנייה כבר מאפסנת עבורנו את המעילים. מכיוון שהקדמנו הפנתה אותנו המארחת לאזור ההמתנה בו ממוקם (במקרה!) בר המסעדה. יש לציין שבאזור ההמתנה יש שולחן ענק שניתן לשבת סביבו בנוחות תוך כדי לגימה מהיין ובחינת שלל הנקניקים, הפסטות והרטבים שמוצעים למכירה במקום. הזמנו בקבוק יין לבן "פינו גריג'יו" והתחלנו לבחון את המסעדה להנאתנו.

"פיצה איסט" ממוקמת במה שנדמה שהיה מבנה תעשייתי ישן, וזאת ניתן לראות לפי תקרת הבטון החשופה, צינורות המיזוג והאקוסטיקה המיוחדת. יש מגוון אפשרויות הושבה לסועדים- שולחנות בר גבוהים, שולחנות משותפים ארוכים (כ 15-20 סועדים), תאים פרטיים וכמובן שולחנות עגולים רגילים. התאורה נעימה מאוד והריח של האוכל כבר עושה חשק להתיישב לאכול, וממש לא משנה לנו סוג השולחן.

18:38: י' הגיע, נסלח לו על האיחור, אחרי הכל שתינו כבר כמה כוסות שהפכו אותנו לידידותיים לסביבה (:

תוך כדי עיון מהיר בתפריט הבנתי שפה לא מתעסקים בשטויות והשף יודע בדיוק מה הוא עושה.

איך אני יודעת את זה רק ממבט בתפריט? דעו זאת: כשמקבלים תפריט כאורך הגלות עם מגוון מנות אזי: 1. המקום לא מתמחה בשום דבר .2. רוב הסיכויים שחומרי הגלם במקררים הם ההפך מטריים. 3. כדאי לקום ולמצוא מקום אחר לאכול בו.

נחזור לענייננו, בתפריט היה מבחר נאה של מנות אנטיפסטי, פיצות, בשרים (בזאת נכללים גם נקניקים) ומספר מספק לגמרי של תוספות וסלטים. תוך מספר דקות החלטנו כולנו על מושא גרגרנותנו להערב, אותתנו למלצר שהגענו להחלטה ושהגיעה השעה להבין מה יודעים להכין פה ב"פיצה איסט".

למנות ראשונות חלקנו שלושתנו פלטת נקניקים וגבינות- נקניק פרושוטו, וגבינות גורגונזולה ופיקורינו(£13).

הוספנו סלט סלק עם גבינת פטה משובחת(£6.5), ובנוסף קיבלנו סלסלת לחמים תוצרת בית שהיו טריים מאוד ואפילו היה לחם זיתים שאני כל כך אוהבת לטבול ברוטב של הסלט.

19:15: אני חושבת שרק כאשר הגיעו המנות העיקריות הבנו על מה מדובר במסעדה החביבה הזו. פה לא משחקים משחקים, ולא גורמים לאנשים לשלם כסף טוב על מנות קטנות או כפי שלעיתים נתקלים ב"דוגמיות אוכל על הצלחת". הנדיבות שהופיעה לנו על הצלחות לא תבייש אף מאמא איטלקייה ובטח שלא תשאיר אף אחד רעב.

חברנו י' הזמין פיצה. לטענתו במקום ששם הפיצה מתנוסס בגאון בשמה של המסעדה אין סיכוי שהוא יפספס את המנה המדוברת. י' נדהם מגודל פיצת כדורי בשר העגל שלו. בנוסף לבשר העגל הוסיפו גם נקנקיק פרושוטו ושמנת. נשמע מוזר- אני חייבת להודות שהתמונה שצילמתי היא לא הכי מחמיאה למנה (חושך ומלצמת אייפון הם לא תמיד ידידותיים למשתמש), אבל חברים, כמה שזה היה טעים! הבצק דק וקריספי בקצוות, בשר העגל רך ונימוח, הפרושוטו העניק מליחות עדינה והשמנת..מה יכול להיות לא טעים בשמנת?!?

האהוב גם כן לא בחל בדבר ובמיקוד שלא יבייש אף קרניבור מקצועי הכריז קבל עם ופיצה כי הערב הוא אוכל סטייק אנטריקוט המלווה במח עצם ובשעועית מזן ברולוטי (איטלקי עד הסוף). אין מה לומר, הסטייק נצלה באופן מושלם, רק המראה של הסטייק גרמו לכולנו להגברת פעילות בלוטות הרוק, ואני חושבת שאתן לתמונה לדבר בעד עצמה.

לבסוף אני הזמנתי את אחת המנות שלמדתי להכיר ולאהוב מאז שעברנו ללונדון וזו מנת הקריספי פורק בלי ((Crispy Pork Belly. מדובר בנתח שחלקו העליון הוא קריספי לחלוטין (נקרא Crackling), והחלק של הבשר הוא רך מאוד ונימוח. נתח זה מצריך בישול ארוך יחסית ומתאים מאוד לימים קרים שהגוף פשוט רוצה אוכל ביתי וחם (מבלי לבשל בבית באותו היום). הבשר הגיע בליווי שעועית ופירה שתובל בהמון שום- קצת יותר מדי לטעמי. מיותר לציין שלא הצלחתי לסיים את המנה? קמצנות היא לא מילה מוכרת ב"פיצה איסט" ולמדנו שצריך להגיע למסעדה רעבים, ואולי אפילו לחשוב על לחלוק מנות, אחרת מאוד קשה להשתלט על כמות האוכל בצלחת.

20:00: המסעדה כבר מפוצצת באנשים, יש רחש בחש בלתי פוסק באוויר, ואווירה מאוד צעירה ותוססת. מסתבר שמתחת למסעדה בקומת המרתף יש מועדון הופעות בו מופיעות להקות מקומיות שאולי יום אחד עוד נשמע עליהן, דבר שגורם לכמות אדירה של אנשים להגיע למקום לאכול משהו לפני ההופעה. המלצר ניגש אלינו ושואל בנימוס אם סיימנו לאכול (כי נשארו קצת שאריות) ואם ברצוננו להזמין קינוחים משום שיש אנשים שישמחו לקבל את השולחן שלנו! די חצוף אני חייבת לומר, אנחנו דבקים בשולחננו עד השעה המיועדת ויהיה מה! (השעה היא 8 והשולחן עומד לרשותנו עד 8 וחצי על-פי ההזמנה שלנו).

תפריט הקינוחים היה מפתה במיוחד, ואני חייבת להודות שהיתה התלבטות אמיתית מה להזמין, כי הכל נשמע ממש טוב! אז מה עושים כשמתלבטים? מזמינים 3 קינוחים וטועמים מכולם.

הקינוח הראשון היה סופגניות אווריריות במיוחד בציפוי קינמון וסוכר, אותן ניתן לטבול בשוקולד חם. אוי לשחיתות, וכל הכבוד על יצירת הסופגניות הכי אווריריות שאי פעם טעמתי. לא היה להן את הטעם והאפטר טייסט הנוראי של שמן הטיגון וניתן מיד להבחין בטריות ובהקפדה תוך הכנת הקינוח.

י' שם את חשקו בעוגת גבינה אפויה ומעליה תאנים טריות ומעט מאוד רוטב פירות יער. הביסקוויטים היו טיפונת יבשושיים לטעמי, אבל בסך הכל העוגה היתה טעימה מאוד. החלק האהוב עלי בקינוח היו התאנים הטריות שהיו מפוצצות בטעמים.

האהוב לא יכול לוותר על שוקולד לקינוח ולכן הזמין טארט שוקולד וכרמל עם מעט מלח אטלנטי! למי שעניין המלח נשמע טיפה מוזר- כדאי שתדעו שמלח מגביר את טעם השוקולד, מאזן מצויין בין המתיקות החזקה של השוקולד והכרמל, ולא גורם לאותה תחושת מתיקות חזקה הנפוצה אחרי שאוכלים כמויות מכובדות של שוקולד.

20:30: אם המלצר היה יכול להיות קצת פחות בוטה באשר לרצונו שנפנה את השולחן זה היה יכול להיות ערב ללא רבב...
אם נתעלם מהסיום הקצת מואץ שלנו, זה היה ערב מוצלח מאוד עם אוכל מצויין, ביתי, חם, מתוק עם מעט טעם מלוח. בלה איטליה!

Experiments In Food - The London Experimental Food Show

Early last week my beloved told me: ‘You remember we got tickets to that food show on Saturday, right?’. I actually had no clue what he was talking about... turns out my beloved ordered the tickets a few weeks ago, but sort of forgot to tell me about that! No worries, luckily (for him) it was actually great fun.

The tickets that cost only £10 gained us entry to one of the most interesting shows we went to lately. It was held in the centre of the Brick Lane area, famously a mecca for lovers of vintage clothes and special jewellery shops, countless galleries, street art, and especially the beat and chic that simply spills over from the people who live here and come to visit.

The show that brought us here on this fine day was held by the Experimental Food Society (yes such an organization actually exists), and its goal was to demonstrate how can simple ingredients (food) serve for various purposes other than eating them.

Right after entering the rather simple house where the show was held, we noticed a hawk made of sugar, spreading its wings over the stunned visitors. It was amazing to see how many details can be created from sugar (too bad we couldn’t take a bite from one of its feathers – this will be a recurring theme throughout this visit since most of the exhibits were not for eating and it was a bit of a pity!) www.scottohra.co.uk

The sweet hawk was so big and impressive that it attracted our attention where-ever we went in the exhibition hall so it gets another picture:

You think we’re at a puppet show? Not at all, here the guys from Blanch & Shock Food Design are hanging cakes from fishing strings hanging from the ceiling. The instalment was about the psychological aspect of food, and refers to the common approach of linking food to weight. The two guys who worked on setting this up explained to everybody who was asking them (while all the time hanging pieces of cake and meringue from the strings) that they prepared cakes that are significantly light-weight compared to ‘normal’ cakes, by using ‘molecular gastronomy’ techniques.

If I had friends from the Gothic community or fans of magic (in the sense of practical tricks, not witchcraft like in fantasy films), I would buy them a cake from The CakeConjurer

Around the corner we ran into chocolate and candy instalments by Carl Warner. Mr. Warner specializes in creating models out of food. The models appear in photos that are simply incredible!

At this show they had a chocolate train, an Eiffel Tower built of chocolate bars and berries, and a house whose base was made of cookies and halva (sweetmeat of sesame oil and nuts) and its walls are ornamented with countless colourful candies.

What a beautiful and smart piece of artwork! I came to him and told him how much I was impressed by his work, and he thanked me in typical British politeness...

I warmly recommend going to Warner’s website and enjoying the many photos of his wonderful works. The food photos will make you feel like you’re inside a fairytale, ready to take a bite off the picture.

The really experimental part was held in a different place nearby. For £6 we got a small box that contained several ingredients, as described on the flyer we got with the box:

Noodle salad with fungus and a little jellyfish ‘meat’
Pan-fried lamb’s testicles on cous cous
Worms on yoghurt with bee vomit (honey)
Sausages wrapped in pure gold & silver with clapshot
Seaweed snack – actually, it’s the same algae you can find in sushi
Space dust (those candies that pop in your mouth)
Carrot with a hole cut through its length and a straw at its tip
Marshmallow with the insect that’s responsible to the pink colour of many of our foods (Cochineal bug).
Cheddar, parmesan and lettuce sandwich.

The creators of this box of wonders wanted to expose the visitors to the show to ingredients we meet on a daily basis, and help us look at them in a different way than we’re used to. For example, the 1kg of worms need 1/10 less plant matter compared 1kg of beef – and has roughly the same amount of protein. The ‘space dust’ entered our lives as a result of an experiment in setting candy and CO2 under pressure. The purpose of the carrot with the hole in the middle and the straw stuck in it was to show us how it can become a musical instrument (with a highly annoying sound). We also learned that bee vomit is actually honey.

Where does the sandwich fit into all of this? Turns out that in order to extract the most of the taste in every sandwich (or food in general) we need to warm it up to a minimal temperature of 36.5 degrees. The simplest way to do this is by sitting on our sandwich! So we did exactly that – we sat on our sandwich together with several other people that felt quite embarrassed at the beginning. We hatched on our sandwiches, laughed and tasted the various ingredients of the box (in other words, my beloved ate the worms) and it was a lovely ‘bum sandwich’ meal.

I think we had enough experimental food for one day!

אקספרימנטלי משהו- The London Experimental Food Show

בתחילת השבוע שעבר פנה אלי האהוב ואמר: "את זוכרת שיש לנו כרטיסים לתערוכת אוכל בשבת, נכון?" אני מצידי לא ידעתי על מה הוא מדבר בכלל...מסתבר שהאהוב הזמין את הכרטיסים לפני מספר שבועות, אבל קצת שכח לספר לי עליהם! בקטנה, יש לו מזל שהיה שם כיף ממש.

הכרטיסים שעלו סך הכל 10 פאונד הקנו לנו כניסה לאחת התערוכות היותר נחמדות שהיינו בהן בתקופה האחרונה. מדובר בתערוכה שהתקיימה במרכז איזור "בריק ליין" המפורסם בהיותו מרכז לחובבי בגדי וינטאג' חנויות תכשיטים מיוחדות, גלריות אין ספור, אומנות רחוב, ובעיקר בשל הקצב והאופנתיות שפשוט נשפכת מתושבי האיזור והעוברים-והשבים שמסתובבים שם.

התערוכה שלכבודה התכנסנו היתה מטעם "האיגוד לאוכל אקספרימנטאלי" (Experimental Food Society – מסתבר שיש כאן דבר כזה) ומטרתה היתה להדגים איך ניתן להשתמש בחומרי גלם (מזון) פשוטים לצרכים שונים ומגוונים בנוסף לאכילה עצמה.

מייד כשנכנסנו למבנה הפשוט-למדי בו התקיימה התערוכה, ניצב בפנינו בגאון נץ עשוי סוכר אשר פרס את כנפיו על באי התערוכה ההמומים. מדהים לראות איזה פרטים אפשר ליצור מסוכר (חבל שאי אפשר לקחת ביס מאיזו נוצה – זו תהיה תמה חוזרת על עצמה לאורך כל הביקור כיוון שרוב המיצגים אינם לאכילה וחבל!). www.scottohra.co.uk

הנץ המסוכר (מסוכן?!) היה כל כך גדול ומרשים שהוא תפס את תשומת לבנו בכל איזור בחדר התערוכה שבו שהינו ולכן הוא זוכה לתמונה נוספת:

חשבתם שהגעתם לתיאטרון בובות? אז לא, פה העוגות של החבר'ה מ- Blanch & Shock Food Design תלויות מחוטי דייג התלויים מהתקרה. המיצג עוסק בהיבט הפסיכולוגי של מזון ומתייחס לנטייה המקובלת לשייך מזון למשקל. שני הבחורים שעמדו שם הסבירו לכל מי ששאל אותם (תוך כדי שהמשיכו לתלות פיסות עוגות ומרנג מהחוטים) שהם הכינו עוגות שהן קלות משקל באופן מהותי לעומת עוגות "רגילות", באמצעות טכניקות של "בישול מולקולרי".

אם היו לי חברים מהקהילה הגותית או חובבי קסמים(במובן של טריקים, ולא של כשפים כמו בסרטי פנטזיה), הייתי מוכנה להזמין להם עוגה מבית היוצר של

מעבר לפינה חיכו לנו מייצגי שוקולד וסוכריות מבית היוצר של קארל וורנר. וורנר מתמחה ביצירת דגמים העשויים ממוצרי מזון. הדגמים מופיעים בצילומים שאין מילה אחרת מלתאר אותם- מדהימים!

בתערוכה הוצגו דגמים של רכבת שוקולד, מגדל אייפל הבנוי מחטיפי שוקולד ופירות יער, וגם בית שבסיסו עשוי מעוגיות וחלווה והקירות שלו מעוטרים באין סוף סוכריות צבעוניות.

איזו מלאכת מחשבת יפייפיה ומתוחכמת. ניגשתי אליו ואמרתי לו עד כמה עבודתו הרשימה אותי, והוא מצידו הודה לי בנימוס בריטי מבוייש...

אני ממליצה בחום להיכנס לאתר של וורנר ולהנות ממגוון הצילומים והעבודות המדהימות שלו. צילומי האוכל יצליחו לגרום לכם לתחושה כאילו אתם בעולמם של עמי ותמי וחשק לקחת ביס מהתמונה (:

במבנה אחר של התערוכה התקיים החלק הבאמת אקספרמנטיאלי. בתמורה ל £6 קנינו קופסא קטנה שהכילה מספר מרכיבים, ואני מצטטת מהפלייר שקיבלנו עם הקופסא:

1. סלט איטריות עם מעט "בשר" מדוזה

2. אשכי טלה על מצע קוסקוס

3. תולעים ויוגורט בזיגוג קיא דבורים! (דבש)

4. נקניקיות עטופות בנייר זהב וכסף ופירה תפו"א

5. חטיף אצות- תכלס, אצות לסושי

6. סוכריות קופצות

7. גזר עם חור לאורכו וקש בקצהו

8. מרשמלו ולצידו החרק שאחראי לצבע הורוד של אכלים שונים בחיינו (Cochineal Bug)

8. סנדוויץ גבינה צהובה וחסה

יוצרי קופסת הפלא הזו רצו לחשוף את הבאים לתערוכה למרכיבים שקיימים ביום יום שלנו, ולעזור לנו להתסכל עליהם באופן שונה מהרגיל. לדוגמא, התולעים מכילות כמות פרוטאין המשתווה לכ- 4 סטייקים ואילו הסוכריות הקופצות הגיעו לחיינו כתוצאה של ניסוי לחצים בין סוכריות וחמצן. הגזר בא להדגים לנו כיצד הוא יכול לשמש ככלי נגינה (שהצליל שלו מעצבן ממש) ושקיא דבורים הוא בעצם דבש.

איפה הסנדוויץ נכנס בכל הסיפור הזה? כדי להפיק את מירב הטעמים שקיימים בכל סנדוויץ או באוכל בכלל עלינו לחמם אותו לטמפרטורה מינימלית של 36.5 מעולות. הדרך הפשוטה לעשות כן היא לשבת על הסנדוויץ שלנו! וכך עשינו- ישבנן על הסנדוויץ יחד עם עוד כמה אנשים שהרגישו מאוד נבוכים בתחילה. דגרנו על הסנדוויץ, צחקנו וטעמנו את המרכיבים השונים בקופסא (ז"א, האהוב אכל את התולעים) והיה יופי של "סנדוויץ טוסיק".

אני חושבת שהיה לנו מספיק אוכל ניסיוני ליום אחד!

הופעה של טעמים - Made in Camden

לפני שנה עברנו האהוב ואני לעיר החלומות שלנו, לונדון. ממש תוך כמה חודשים לתוך מערכת היחסים שלנו ידענו שיבוא היום ונחיה יחד בעיר המופלאה הזו שיצא לנו להתאהב בה בהזדמנויות שונות בשנות הטיפש-עשרה שלנו. אני נמשכתי לאופנה, התרבות ואינסוף הטיפוסים השונים מכל העולם שאפשר לבהות בהם (בנימוס), והאהוב נמשך לסצנת המועדונים, הברים ותרבות האינדי שצמחה ממש ברחובות שבאופן הזוי במקצת נמצאים במרחק קצר מהבית.

אותם רחובות נמצאים בשכונת קמדן (Camden Town). קמדן היא אחת השכונות היותר צבעוניות, שמחות ועמוסות תיירים בלונדון- מהסיבה שהיא מציעה מגוון שווקים שיכולים לפנות לכל אחד מאיתנו. חשקה נפשכם במזוודה מתחילת המאה הקודמת? לא תצליחו לשרוד את החורף הקרוב בלי מעיל עור ופרווה שעיצובו הושפע משנות ה-60? אתם רעבים לאיזה אגרול מטוגן לעייפה? בדיוק אמא זרקה לכם את הטי-שרט השחורה (הדהוייה לגמרי) לפח? זהו המקום להשלים את החסר או פשוט לקנות שמונצע'ס שאח"כ לא תבינו למה קניתם אותם.

אבל עם כל הכבוד לשופינג בלונדון, בבלוג הזה עסקינן באוכל ומסעדות, ואני שמחה לבשר שיש מקום נפלא בו אפשר לאכול אחרי הסיור הכיפי אך עם זאת מעייף בשווקים ובין המוני האנשים שפוקדים את קמדן מדי יום. אם תתחילו את יומכם בתחנת הטיוב Camden Town ותמשיכו בהליכה צפונה לכל אורכו של רחוב קמדן (Camden high st) בסופו של דבר תגיעו לנקודת ציון חשובה נוספת בלונדון וזהו ה- Roundhouse. המקום היה בית חם להופעות של אמנים ולהקות עוד בתקופות שחלקנו היינו רוצים להיוולד בהן, וכיום מארח הופעות שלי גדולי האמנים של ימנו, תערוכות, מסיבות ואפילו חתונות.

ממש לא מזמן נפתחה בתוך המבנה העגול והמוזר למראה מסעדה ששמה –Made in Camden, שבמבט ראשון נראית פשוטה, ואפילו מצליחה להזכיר המראה שלה את הקפיטריות שמפקיעות מחירים שיש באולמות קונצרטים, אבל (הפתעה הפתעה) מסתבר שטעים פה כל כך!!!

עלי להתוודות שחלק מההנאה מהמסעדה נעוצה בעובדה שהיא במרחק הליכה מהבית- 4 דק' על השעון, וגם זה בהליכה איטית.

הגענו ביום ראשון בערב לכבוד יומולדת של חברה והיינו ר-ע-ב-י-ם. המקום לא היה מפוצץ כבכל ערב, בטח בגלל שלא היתה שום הופעה באותו יום (בדרך כלל המקום מפוצץ, וחייבים להזמין מקומות מראש). המסעדה היתה חצי מלאה ואני חייבת להודות שזה היה נהדר, לא הייתי במוד לרעש ותזזיתיות, התאים לי בול.

19:30: סוף סוף הצלחנו להבין איפה דלת הכניסה! נשמע מטופש אבל הדלת כאן היא לא הכי טריוויאלית למשתמש המצוי (נראית כמו דלת ליציאת חירום). מלצר צרפתי חביב מלווה אותנו אל עבר השולחן שלנו בפינה נעימה של המסעדה ממנה ניתן להשקיף אל הרחוב.

קיבלנו את התפריטים ולשם שינוי בא לי לשתות דווקא קוקטייל. אני אף פעם לא יודעת את שם הקוקטייל אותו מתחשק לי וגם אם אקרא מליון פעם את רשימת המרכיבים של המשקאות המופיעים בתפריט, אני לא יודעת לומר אם אוהב או לא אוהב את שקיבלתי. לכן, השיטה שלי היא לבקש "קוקטייל עם טעם לא חזק של אלכוהול ושיהיה פירותי", כך נוצר מצב שאין לי מושג מהו שם הקוקטייל (גם אם אמרו לי אני לא טורחת לזכור) אבל אני שותה משקה שטעים לי- ואני שומרת לעצמי את האופציה להחזיר את המשקה אם זה אינו מוצלח בעיני- אחרי הכל, הברמן לא קלע לטעם שהגדרתי לו....(תמימה, כזו אני).

המלצר הבין את בקשתי וקיבלתי קוקטייל בשם Alcolfrotic - משקה מבוסס ג'ין, ליצ'י, לימון וזסט תפוז (£8). המשקה היה לא רע, אבל גם לא "נפלתי". נעבור לאהוב שבחר יין (שכל אחד יתמקד במה שהוא מבין...) - בקבוק Carmenere מצ'ילה, יין אדום נעים וקליל שזרם בעדינות ועזר לנו להנות מהמנות שבאו אחר-כך (£23)

באנו רעבים, כבר ציינתי? המלצר המליץ לנו להזמין כמה מנות ראשונות לחלוקה בין ארבעתנו ומנה עיקרית לכל אחד. המלצר אמר ולכן נציית. סך הכל הזמנו עבור 4 אנשים, 6 מנות ראשונות ו- 4 עיקריות ו- 2 קינוחים, אז קדימה, בואו תצטרפו לשחיתות (או לפחות תקראו על כך).

מ', כלת היומולדת חשקה במרק כרובית (£4.5), אשר התאים מאוד לערב עם רוח קרה וטמפרטורות שמבשרות את בוא החורף הלונדוני כפי שהיו באותו היום. המרק היה סמיך מאוד ובעל טעם שמנתי שקיבל PUSH מרענן משמן הזית והצ'ילי שעיטרו את המרק עם הגשתו.

ג' הזמין 2 מנות ראשונות- האחת, כבד עוף בתיבול קארי המוגש על לחם בריוש, צזיקי, רימון, חמוציות ושקדים (£7). נשמע שילוב טעמים מעט מוזר... אבל אפילו לטעמי, בתור מי שאינה חובבת קארי בכלל, כבד העוף היה עשוי נפלא- לא ייבשו אותו, הוא היה טרי, וכל שאר מרכיבי המנה החמיאו לכבד. המנה שילבה כמה טקסטורות- שזה מאפיין שאני מאוד אוהבת. קיבלנו הכל במנה הזו- קראנצ'יות, רכות, חמוץ, מתוק, טעמים מהמזרח ועוד.

המנה השניה של ג' היתה סטייק שור בגריל המלווה בקומפוט של עגבניות ובצלים ופשטידת תפוחי אדמה עם גבינת גורגונזולה (גבינת עובש מצויינת) (£8). יכול להיות משהו לא טוב במרכיבים הללו? אני לא רואה איך אפשר לומר מילה רעה. הבשר היה רך ועדין (בשר שור מצריך בישול ארוך מאוד), הקומפוט היה מתקתק ומתובל בפלפל שחור שהקפיץ את הטעם בפה, ועל הפשטידה המציאו את המושג "אוכל מנחם" לטעמי.

גם האהוב הזמין 2 מנות ראשונות, בהתמקדות על "פרה נמוכה". אחת מהראשונות היתה מנת טרין חזיר המלווה בממרח צ'אטני העשוי משומר ודובדבנים, ורטוב איולי חרדל (£6.5). האהוב הוא חובב טרין ידוע, ותמיד יזמין כזה אם קיים בתפריט. המנה הזו הדגימה לנו כיצד טרין יכול להיות ממרח בשרי אך ללא כל הצורך בשומן ועוד תוספות שלא תמיד תורמות למרקם או לטעם במנה. ניתן היה להבין שהשף יודע מה הוא עושה- לא תמיד צריך לעקוב אחר כל חוקי הבישול הצרפתי ולבשל טרין על פי הספר, אלא אפשר לבשל באופן פשוט, לא מתיימר, ולכבד את הסועד בבשר נקי משומן, אשר תובל ובושל כראוי. הממרחים המצורפים החמיאו לטרין, ביס אחד מתקתק, ביס אחר עם חריפות עדינה וכמובן שניתן לשלב בין השניים.

המנה השנייה של האהוב היתה "בטן חזיר" עם כרוב אדום, חבושים ופירה שום עם רוטב מייפל (£8). החלק הטריקי בהכנת המנה היא פיסת השומן המונחת מעל הבשר שאמורה להיות קריספית ומתפצחת בפה, לא סתם באנגלית קוראים לחלק הזה Crackling. השומן אכן היה קריספי והבשר נמס בפה ויחד עם המתיקות של השום והמייפל היתה לכולנו חגיגת טעמים. נום נום נום!

אני הזמנתי דג מקרל בתיבול תפוז וזעפרן, ריבת סלק וסלט תפוחי אדמה וואסאבי (£7.5). הדג היה טיפונת יבש מדי לטעמי, כנראה טוגן דקה אחת יותר מדי, אבל שאר מרכיבי המנה פיצו על העניין. הוואסבי התפצפץ בפה, וריבת הסלק היתה מתוקה ולחלחה את הדג והשיבה לו בהצלחה את ה"חיות" לה הוא היה זקוק כל כך.

20:30: סיימנו לאכול... בוחנים את כל הצלחות המונחות לפנינו, תוהים אם אנחנו מסוגלים להזמין את הכל שוב, מהתחלה- אבל מצד שני, אם זו היתה רק הפתיחה, מה עוד מצפה לנו בהמשך? הרף מוצב גבוה עכשיו...

20:40: טה דאם! העיקריות זה העיקר.

ג' ואני החלטנו להזמין את אותה המנה- חזה ברווז במרינדת תפוז וכוכב אניס, עם פירה בטטה (£16). כשמכינים ברווז אין דבר חשוב יותר מאשר מידת העשייה שלו- וגם פה השף לא פישל. הברווז היה ורדרד בדיוק כפי שהוא אמור להיות, בשר רך עם תיבול מתאים של התפוז שפונק על-ידי יין אדום מצומצם במחבת (glaze). פירה הבטטה היה קרמי ולא כבד מדי, ואפילו העלים הירוקים קיבלו את מנת שמן הזית לו היו זקוקים. יאמי.

האהוב הזמין דג Hake (מסוג בקלה) עם קוסקוס ישראלי (בחיי ככה כתוב בתפריט), שהתגלו כאותם פתיתים כמו שהגננת הכינה לנו בגן הילדים, עגבניות שרי ולמון-גראס (£15). הדג היה מלא טעם, לח, ו"התפרק" בדיוק כפי שדג אמור להתפרק ברגע שנוגעים בו עם המזלג. ה"קוסקוס" נהנה מהרוטב החמצמץ והעגבניות הוסיפו עוד עסיסיות למנה.

כלת היומולדת התפנקה בצלע בקר שבושלה בבישול ארוך בתיבול אסייתי שהוגשה עם אורז ושעועית אדוקי (Adzuki). אני מניחה שלא אפתיע אף אחד אם אומר שהבשר היה עשוי נפלא, החליק מהעצם, ושהיה תענוג לסיים את המנה עם האורז שספג את הרוטב המתקתק.

21:30: איך אפשר בלי קינוח?

פה התחלנו להתלבט. אנחנו כישראלים לא ממש מתחברים לכל הפודינגים והקינוחים הסופר כבדים שנוהגים להגיש פה באנגליה. התלבטנו יחסית הרבה זמן, ובסופו של דבר החלטנו להזמין רק 2 קינוחים לארבעתנו.

הראשון- עוגה ממולאת בקרם כרמל ולצידה גלידת קוקוס ורוטב אוכמניות (£6). העוגה היתה דחוסה מדי לטעמי ובעלת טעם קימחי מעט. קרם הכרמל היה מצויין והיה בדיוק בטמפרטורה הנכונה והשתלב טוב מאוד עם הגלידה.

הקינוח השני היה מרקיז שוקולד ולצידו פחזניה ממולאת בשמנת בטעם מנטה ורום (£6). לא הספקתי למצמץ ומרקיז השוקולד התאייד כלא היה. החבר'ה מסביבי חיסלו אותו עוד לפני שהספקתי לומר "ליידי גאגא"!!! נראה לי שהיה להם טעים....

אין מילים בפי, כל המנות, הראשונות וכן העיקריות היוו עבורנו ארוחה משובחת עם טעמים שלא פוגשים בכל מקום. אני יכולה להרשות לעצמי לומר שהייתי שמחה ללחוץ לשף של Made in Camden את היד, הוא עשה עבודה מצוינת בהרכבת המנות, שילוב הטעמים ועל היכולת להפוך חומרי גלם "רגילים" למיוחדים ועם טעם של עוד. המסעדה לא סובלת ממנת יתר של שכרון חושים עצמי, אלא מכבדת את הסועד בעיצוב פשוט, שירות ראוי ואוכל שכבר מעכשיו בא לי לחזור אליו. שאפו.

A Show of Tastes – Made in Camden

A year ago I moved together with my beloved to the city of our dreams, London. Actually, by the time we were only a few months into our relationship we knew that one day we will live in this wonderful city, which we both fell in love with in various opportunities during our teenage years. I was drawn to the fashion, the culture, and the endless different types of people you can stare at (politely), and my beloved was attracted to the clubs, bars and indie scene that grew in the very same streets that are now, weirdly enough, a short walk from our place.

Those streets are in Camden Town. This is one of the more colourful, cheerful and touristic areas in London – because it has a range of markets that can offer something to every person. Fancy a suitcase from the beginning of the previous century? Can’t survive the upcoming winter without a fur leather jacket designed under the influence of the 60s? Hungry for a cheap and greasy spring roll? Mom just threw away your black (totally faded) T-shirt? Here’s where you can fill those gaps or simply buy from an endless selection of bric-a-brac that you will never understand why you bought this in the first place.

But with all due respect to shopping in London, this blog is about food and restaurants, and I’m happy to announce that there is a wonderful place where you can eat after the fun-but-tiring walk among the stalls and millions of people that visit Camden Town every day. If you start your day here at the Camden Town tube station and keep on walking to the north the full length of Camden High Street, you will end up in front of another important London landmark – the Roundhouse. This place used to be the venue for shows by bands and artists that some of us wish they were born early enough to see, and today keeps hosting shows by the biggest artists of our times, as well as exhibitions, parties, and even weddings.

Not too long ago, a restaurant was opened inside this round and curious building, named Made in Camden. At first sight, the restaurant looks simple, and even reminded me those cafeterias that sell overpriced items at concert halls, but (surprise surprise), it turned out that it’s soo tasty here!!

I must confess that part of the fun in coming here is the fact that the place is 4 minutes walk from home, and even this while walking slowly.

We arrived on a Sunday evening to celebrate a friend’s birthday and we were s-t-a-r-v-i-n-g. The place wasn’t as jammed as in every other night, probably because there was no show playing on that evening (usually the place is packed, and you should book in advance). The restaurant was only half full and I must admit that it was great; I wasn’t in the mood for noise and hustle and bustle, a quiet evening was just what I needed.

19:30: Finally we found the entrance! Sounds silly but it’s not trivial for the average person to find the door (looks like an emergency exit). A nice French waiter takes us to our table in a pleasant corner from where we can see the street.

We got the menus and for a change I felt like having a cocktail. I never know the name of the cocktail I want, and even if I will read the list of ingredients of each drink from the menu a million times, I will not be able to say if I will love or not what I will get. So, what I do, is ask for ‘something fruity without a strong taste of alcohol’, and this way I have no idea what’s the name of the cocktail (even if they tell me I never bother to remember) but I’m having a drink that I like it’s taste – and I always have the option to return it if I don’t like it – after all, in such a case it’s obvious that the barman wasn’t spot-on the taste I defined (I’m so naive, I know).

The waiter understood what I was looking for and I got a cocktail named Alcolfrotic – a gin, lychee, orange zest, lemon juice and elder flower cordial (£8). It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t ‘fall off my chair’, neither. On to my beloved who picked the wine (each person should stick to what he understands better...) – a bottle of Chilean Carmenere, a light and pleasant red wine that gently smoothed the way for the courses that came later on (£23).

Did I mention already that we were hungry? The waiter recommended that we order a few starters to share between the four of us, and one main for each person. The waiter recommends therefore we shall obey. In total we ordered 6 starters, 4 mains and 2 desserts for 4 people – you’re welcome to join our indulgence (or at least read all about it)!

MD, the birthday girl, desired the cauliflower soup (£4.5), that went very well with a cold windy evening with temperatures that hint of the coming London winter like we had that day. The soup was thick with a strong creamy flavour, which got a freshening boost from the olive oil and chilli garnished that was added to it just before serving.

GD ordered 2 starters – the first was curried chicken liver with toasted brioche, tzatziki, pomegranate, flaked almond (£7). It may seem like a slightly odd combination of tastes... but even for me, as a person who doesn’t like curry at all, the chicken liver was made wonderfully – it wasn’t too dry, it was fresh, and the rest of the dish’s ingredients flattered it. The dish combined a few textures – which is a feature I love very much in a dish. We got everything in this dish – crunchiness, softness, sour, sweet, Eastern flavour, and more.

GD’s second starter was grilled onglet steak with tomato and onion compote, and gorgonzola dauphinoise (gratin with a very good mouldy cheese)(£8). Can there be anything less than excellent in those ingredients? I can’t see how could I possibly say anything bad. The meat was soft and delicate (onglet requires long cooking), the compote was sweetish and flavoured with black pepper that stabbed the mouth pleasantly, and the term ‘comfort food’ was invented to describe this gratin in my opinion.

My beloved also ordered 2 starters, focusing on pork. The first starter was Spanish pork rilette with fennel and sour cherry chutney, and mustard alioli (£6.5). My beloved is a great fan of terrines and their likes, and will always order them if they’re found in the menu. This dish was an example to how a rilette (which is a kind of terrine) can be a meaty paste without any need of fat or other add-ons that don’t always contribute to the texture or the taste of the dish. It was clear the chef knew what he was doing – you don’t always need to follow all the rules of the French neo-Modern cuisine and cook the terrine ‘by the book’, you can also cook in a simple, un-assuming way, and honour the diner with a fat-clear meat, seasoned and cooked as it should be. The additional spreads flattered the rilette, one bite was sweetish, the other mildly spicy, and of course you could combine the two.

The beloved’s second starter was slow roast pork belly with braised red cabbage, and quince, garlic and maple puree (£8). The tricky part in preparing this dish is the piece of fat that is placed on top of the meat, which is supposed to be crispy and crackling in your mouth (indeed ‘crackling’ is the proper name of this piece). The fat was indeed crispy, the meat melted in our mouths, and together with the sweetness of the garlic and maple we all had a feast of tastes. Mmmm mmm mmm!

I had a saffron & orange pickled mackerel with beetroot jam and wasabi potato salad (£7.5). The fish was a little bit too dry to my liking, probably it was cooked for one minute too long, but the rest of the dish’s ingredients made up for it. The wasabi exploded in my mouth, and the beetroot jam was sweet, moisturized the fish and successfully added the ‘liveliness’ it needed so much.

20:30: We’re done... staring at the empty plates in front of us, wondering if we can order the same all over again – but on the other hand, if those were the starters, what awaits us down the line? Expectations are high...

20:40: Ta-daam! The mains are the main thing.

GD and I decided to order the same dish – seared duck breast with orange & star anise marinade, red wine glaze, and sweet potato mash (£16). When you cook a duck, there’s nothing more important than making sure it’s not overcooked – and here as well the chef didn’t make any mistakes. The duck was pinkish exactly like it should be, soft meat suitably dressed by the orange and spoiled by the red wine glaze. The sweet potato mash was creamy and not too heavy, and even the green leaves got the olive oil they deserved. Yummy.

My beloved ordered pan-fried hake with Israeli cous cous (that’s how it’s in the menu, I swear), that turned out to be the same food we had in kindergarten (it’s proper name is actually Ptitim http://israelity.com/2009/09/24/ptitim/ or Orzo in Italy), cherry tomato and lemongrass relish (£15). The fish was full of taste, moist, and ‘crumbled’ exactly like you expect from a fish as soon as you touch it with a fork. The ‘cous cous’ enjoyed the slightly sour sauce, and the tomatoes added another layer of juiciness to the dish.

The birthday girl indulged herself with a braised beef short-rib in Asian dressing that was served with fried rice and Adzuki beans (£15). I guess I won’t surprise anybody by saying that the meat was made wonderfully, slid out of the bone easily, and it was a pleasure to finish the dish with the rice that soaked the sweetish dressing.

21:30: How can we leave this place without having dessert?

Here our dilemmas started in earnest. We don’t really relate to all those puddings and other super-heavy desserts that are so common here in the UK. We debated for relatively long time, and eventually decided to order only 2 desserts for the four of us.

The first was a dulce de leche hotcake with blackberry sauce and coconut sorbet (£6). The cake was too condensed to my liking and had a slightly floury taste. The dulce de leche was great and in the right temperature and went very well with the ice-cream sorbet.

The second dessert we had was a chocolate marquise that came with a mint and rum profiterole (£6). I didn’t even have time to blink and the chocolate marquise vanished into thin air. My friends eliminated it even before I had time to say ‘Lady Gaga’!!! I think they liked it...

I’m almost speechless: all dishes, starters as well as mains, were a top-class meal for us, with tastes you don’t meet in any other place. I can say that I would be happy to shake the hand of the chef at MADE IN CAMDEN; I think he did a great job in putting the dishes together, mixing the tastes and the ability to turn ‘regular’ ingredients into specials that leave you looking for more. The restaurant doesn’t suffer from an overdose of self-esteem, but respects the diner with a simple decor, ample service and food that I’m already waiting to get back to. Well done.

קינוחים וויאטנאמי -מוצארט (לא העוגה) ואגרול בסוהו

מוצארט (לא העוגה) ואגרול בסוהו

הפעם אחרוג ממנהגי ואתחיל עם קצת תרבות ומשם ישר למתוקים. בשבוע שעבר הלכנו לאופרה (כן ,כן אנחנו מתורבתים לפעמים), רק שהפעם לא מדובר באופרה "לפי הספר" אלא בגרסה מודרנית לאופרה של מוצארט- "דון ג'ובאני". למי מכם שאינו מכיר את הסיפור הכללי של האופרה הזו, מדובר במעלליו של גבר שרמנטי/חתיך ויהיר שמסובב את כל בנות העיר על אצבעו, אך סופו מר כבכל אופרה והוא, מה לעשות, מת בסוף (אל תגידו לי שאתם מופתעים). בגרסה הקלאסית של מוצארט הסיפור הוא בעצם על דון ג'ואן המפורסם, ואילו בגרסה המודרנית הוא הופך לבנקאי לונדוני חתיך הורס הלבוש בחליפה קטלנית למהדרין המפתה את בנות העיר והקהל בעת ובעונה אחת.
האופרה הוצגה באחד המקומות הטרנדיים שיש להם "יד על הדופק" בכל מה שקשור בתרבות בת זמננו בלונדון- מדובר ב"תיאטרון הסוהו" אשר כשמו כן הוא, ממוקם באזור הסוהו הלונדוני. הסוהו הוא אולי האזור הכי קצבי ועכשווי נכון לשנים האחרונות (וזה נכון בכל זמן נתון במאתיים השנים האחרונות לערך) והוא מקבץ בתוכו אפשרויות רבות לבילויים כגון תיאטראות, מועדונים, ברים, וכמובן המון מסעדות מכל העולם. המתחם המפורסם ביותר בתוך האזור הכללי של הסוהו הוא כמובן צ'יינה טאון ובנוסף אליו ניתן למצוא בסביבה מסעדות יפניות, הודיות, איטלקיות, תאילנדיות, פאסט פוד, וכו' מכל סגנון על פני הגלובוס. בנוסף סוהו ידועה בחנויות "למבוגרים בלבד" ובפתיחות רבה יחסית לקהילה הגאה.

17:20: אנחנו אחרי האופרה, ההפקה היתה מוצלחת ומקורית לכל הדעות, מתחשק לנו לנשנש משהו קליל, ועולה צורך עז של החצי השני בקפה ( לא מפתיע במיוחד).

סיירנו להנאתנו בסוהו ובאחד הרחובות הידועים של האזור- רח' ווארדור (Wardour st), נתקלנו ב-Leto, בית קפה/קונדיטוריה שנראית במבט ראשון כמו מוזיאון לעוגות יפות יפות יפות. החלטנו להיכנס, לראות וכמובן לטעום. מבחר העוגות פשוט מטמטם! עוגות קרם, עוגות שכבות, טארטים, בראוניז, עוגות בחושות ועוד ועוד....

17:30: הגענו, אבל אין כסא אחד לרפואה, נאלצים לעשות טייק אווי "לקפה ועוגה" על המדרכה...

הבחירה בעוגה הנכספת לא היתה קלה כלל- ממש "בחירתה של סופי". בסופו של דבר כל אחד מאיתנו עשה את הבלתי אפשרי ובחר את שרצתה נפשו למתוק.

אני הזמנתי טארט עם קרם לימון ומרנג (£2.90), והאהוב הזמין בראוני שוקולד ומקיאטו (בראוני £2.60 קפה £2.20) כמיטב המסורת שלו בבתי-קפה. אילו האהוב היה יכול לדרג את חוויות הבראוניז שלו בבתי הקפה השונים ברחבי העולם, היה יכול להיות לו בלוג מוצלח ביותר!

טארט הלימון שלי היה בעל חמצמצות נעימה והמרנג היה עשוי לעילה ולעילה- קראנצ'י, נימוח ולא מתוק מדי, ובל נשכח את הטארט עצמו שהיה פריך (כשמו כן הוא- בצק פריך) ופירורי כראוי ולא שובר שיניים כפי שכבר יצא לי לפגוש בעבר.

הבראוני והקפה של האהוב גם כן לא אכזבו. הבראוני הצטיין בשוקולד איכותי ובמרקם ממכר- שחיתות לשמה! השוגר ראש מאכילת הבראוני קיבל זריקת עידוד משמעותית מהקפה – אבל המתיקות של הבראוני נשארה למשך דקות ארוכות אחר כך. מאוד פשוט 'להרוס' בראוני לכדי גוש שוקולד סתמי, אבל ב-Leto הצליחו להפוך את הבראוני ליצירה שובבה וטעימה.

18:00: מסתובבים קצת באוקספורד סטריט, עושים שופינג עם העיניים.

19:30: כבר רעבים... מה אוכלים היום לארוחת ערב?

שמנו פעמינו חזרה לרח' ווארדור (5 דקות הליכה). 'בא לי אסיאתי', והופ- לפנינו נמצא סניף (אחד מתוך 4 בלונדון) של בר-המסעדה הוייטנאמי PHO.

המקום מתמחה בהכנת אוכל רחוב ויאטנאמי מסורתי ומתגאה בעיקר במנת הדגל של ויאטנאם וזהו ה –Pho (כשם המקום). מדובר במרק שהוא ארוחה שלמה- יש בו אטריות אורז, בשר עוף/בקר/חזיר או שרימפס, בתוספת צלחת עם נבטים, צ'ילי אדום ועלים ירוקים שמהם ניתן לתבל את המרק לפי הטעם האישי של הסועד. המקום מעוצב במראה שאינו טיפוסי למסעדות אוריינטאליות, אלא כמו בר חמים ומזמין שנחמד לבוא אליו כדי להיפגש עם חברים ולאכול אוכל טוב וזול על הדרך.

19:40: כאן אי אפשר להזמין שולחן מראש, מקבלת את פנינו מארחת/מלצרית פ'אנקית מגניבה עם מוהוק בלונדיני ואיפור שמתאים למועדון רוק מתקדם, ומובילה אותנו אל הבר שנמצא באחורי המסעדה שם נמתין על בקבוק יין לבן.

19:50: האווירה מסביב היא של מפגש היפסטרי בין מזרח ומערב. המלצריות חביבות וזריזות, בזמן ההמתנה אפשר לראות בקלות את המנות שיוצאות במהירות מהמטבח ולפתח את התיאבון.

20:00: חבל שההמתנה קצת ארוכה מדי, הצפיפות והחושך מתחילים לשחק לנו עם העצבים והרעב...

20:05: תוהים לגבי המוצא של המלצרית שהובילה אותנו לפה: אין לה מראה אסיאתי... יש לה ר' מתגלגלת חביבה... מבטא מאוד לא מקומי... בדיוק בזמן היא הגיעה להושיב אותנו בשולחן שלנו!

אני כבר יודעת מראש מה מתחשק לי ולאהוב לוקח גם כן מעט מאוד זמן להגיע להחלטה החשובה.

החלטנו לחלוק יחד שתי מנות פתיחה: הראשונה, CHA GIO CHAY, אגרולים צמחוניים מטוגנים (£4.25), אל תדאגו, כשמגיעים לרגע האמת, לא צריך לדעת איך לקרוא את זה, מזמינים לפי מספר המנה המופיע על התפריט, כמקובל בכל המסעדות האתניות בלונדון. האגרולים מצאו חן בעיני, הם לא נטפו שמן והכי נחמד לאכול אותם עטופים בעלי החסה שמגיעים יחד עם האגרולים יחד עם רוטב מנגו מתקתק.

המנה השניה אותה חלקנו היתה BANH XEO TOM GA, קרפ ויאטנאמי מסורתי עם בשר עוף,שרימפס ונבטים (£6.95). הקרפ נראה בתחילה כמו גבינה מותכת על המחבת, אבל מדובר בעצם בקרפ שמאוד מזכיר טורטיה מקסיקנית- רק עם חורים...הקרפ היה עמוס בבשר עוף,שרימפס ונבטים שהוקפצו יחד במחבת. ההמלצה היא לשבור חתיכה מהקרפ וליצור ביסים קטנים עם הבשר והשרימפס.

21:00: בזמן ההמתנה בין הראשונה לעיקרית, המשכנו לנסות להבין מאיפה המלצרית....אני חושבת שהיא אוקראינית! יש נטייה מוזרה במסעדות אסייתיות בלונדון להעסיק חבר'ה ממזרח אירופה, עוד לא הצלחנו להבין את פשר העניין...

טוב, אחזור לעיקר, האוכל: לעיקרית, האהוב הזמין מרק Pho (£8.25) שכלל נתחי סטייק וכדורי בשר בקר וצלחת נבטים, עלים ירוקים וצ'ילי להוספה לפי הטעם. לפי הדיווחים שלו (ולא היו הרבה כאלה..או שהוא ממש נהנה מהאוכל או שלא היה לו הרבה מה לומר לי...אני מעדיפה את אופציה א') הוא נהנה מהמרק, היתה לו כמות בשר נכבדה להשתלט עליה בקערה, ונראה לי שצריך לתת בכניסה שלט " נא לא להפריע לי באמצע המרק" (:

אני הייתי צריכה להתמודד עם קערת ענק של Bun noodles (£8.95) - לא מדובר במרק אלא במנת אטריות אורז בטמפרטורת החדר, המנה מכילה גם המון ירקות, שרימפס, ואגרול צימחוני. הרוטב היה מצויין, החריפות היתה פיקנטית ולא "עצבנית" מדי, ובשלב מסויים הרמתי ידיים, פשוט לא יכולתי לסיים את האוכל, המנות ענקיות ומשביעות בטירוף!

לקינוח חלקנו את הקינוח הכי ויאטנאמי שיש- "בננה פריטר" (בננה מטוגנת) עם גלידת ג'ינג'ר שנתנה עוקץ ממש טוב למתיקות "הכואבת בשיניים" של הבננות (4.25£), ליקקנו את האצבעות!

21:50: לא מגישים פה אספרסו!! שוד ושבר...אמרתי לכם, חבל שלאהוב אין בלוג בראוניז וקפה!

21:55: אההה.....מסתבר שהמלצרית המדוברת היא אסטונית – אפילו יותר אקזוטי מויאטנאם!

MOZART (NOT THE CAKE) AND EGGROLL AT THE SOHO

This time I will take a different approach and start off with some culture and then straight to the sweets. Last week we went to the opera (oh how cultured we are sometimes), only it wasn’t an opera ‘by the book’ but a modern version of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. For those who are not familiar with the plot of this particular opera, it’s about a hot, arrogant guy who is full of charm and spins all the girls in town on his index finger, but his end is bitter like in every opera, and he unfortunately dies (don’t tell me you’re surprised). In Mozart’s classical version the story is about the well-known Don Juan, while in the modern version he turns into Jonny, a sharp and good-looking London City banker wearing a deadly suit who seduces the girls on stage and in the audience at the same time.

This version of the opera played at one of the trendiest places who keep their finger on the pulse of everything related to contemporary culture in London – The Soho Theatre, which, as you can imagine from its name, is in London’s Soho district. The Soho is probably the most up-to-date and upbeat place in London in the last few years (and it’s been true all through the last two hundred years), and has many entertainment options such as theatres, clubs, bars, and of course countless restaurants from the whole world. The most well-known area within Soho is of course China Town, and in addition to it, you can find around Japanese, Indian, Italian, Thai, Fast and any other kind of restaurant you can think of. Additionally Soho is known by the ‘adult-only’ shops and it’s relative openness to the gay community.

17:20: just out of the opera, very good and original production indeed, we feel like munching something small; the other half feels the need for coffee (not very surprising).

We were exploring Soho at our leisure and in one of the area’s more well-known streets – Wardour St, we run into Leto, a coffeehouse/patisserie that appears at first sight like a museum for pretty pretty pretty cakes. We decided to enter, look around and of course taste some. The selection of cakes is simply bewildering! Cream cakes, layered cakes, tarts, brownies, pound cakes, and more and more...

17:30: we’re in, but there are no chairs to spare, so we had to have our coffee and cakes on the sidewalk...

It wasn’t easy at all to choose our desired cake – Sophie’s Choice indeed. But in the end each of us finally succeeded in the impossible task of picking the sweet of his fancy.

I had a lemon meringue tart (£2.90), and my beloved had a chocolate brownie (£2.60) and a macchiato (£2.20) like his tradition at coffee shops. If my beloved could rate his brownies experiences in coffee shops around the world, he would have a very successful blog of his own!

My lemon tart had a sharp lemony taste, and the meringue was made excellently – crunchy, melts in your mouth and not too sweet, and let’s not forget the tart itself, that was crumbly (as you can expect from a good tart) without breaking your teeth like other tarts I met in the past.

My beloved’s brownie and coffee did not disappoint either. The brownie was made of quality chocolate and had an addictive texture – a taste of pure decadence! The sugar rush from the brownie got a significant enhancement from the coffee – but the sweetness of the brownie lingered for long minutes after it was gone. It is very easy to ‘ruin’ a brownie by making it into an ordinary piece of chocolate, but Leto managed to turn their brownie into a cute and tasty piece.

19:30: Hungry... what’s for dinner?

We headed back to Wardour St (5 mins walk). ‘I feel like having Asian’ and there you go – we are in front of one of the 4 London branches of the Vientamese restaurant-bar PHO.

This place specializes in traditional Vietnamese street food, and is especially proud of the Vietnamese flagship dish – the Pho (just like the place’s name). It’s a soup that is actually a full meal – with rice noodles, chicken/beef/pork meat or shrimps, with a plate of sprouts, red chilli and green leaves that you can use to enrich the soup according to your personal taste. The decor is not like a typical Oriental restaurant, but like a warm and inviting bar where you go with friends to meet, chat and have good food at a reasonable price while you do that.

19:40: It’s not possible to book a table here, we were greeted by a cool funky hostess/waitress with a blonde Mohawk and make-up that would fit at a progressive rock club, and taken to the bar behind the restaurant area where we’ll have a bottle of white wine while waiting.

19:50: The atmosphere around us feels like a hipster meeting between East and West. The waitresses are nice and quick, while we wait we can easily see the dishes coming quickly out of the kitchen and our appetite is developing.

20:00: We seem to be waiting for little too long, the crowdedness and dark start playing with our nerves and we’re getting hungry...

20:05: Wondering about the background of the waitress that brought us here: she doesn’t look Asian... her ‘r’s are rolling and cute... very non-local accent... and now she’s just on time to take us to our table!

I already know what I want to have and my beloved also reaches the important decision very quickly.

We decided to share two starters: the first is Cha Gio Chay, spring rolls (£4.25). Don’t worry, when you reach the moment, you don’t really need to know how to read this, you order by the number of the dish that appears on the menu (or by pointing at it), just like any other ethnic restaurant in London. The spring rolls were to my taste, they weren’t dripping with oil and it’s best to eat them enveloped in the lettuce that comes with the rolls together with a sweetish mango sauce.

The second starter we shared was Banh Xeo Tom Ga, a traditional Vietnamese crepe with chicken, shrimps and sprouts (£6.95). At first sight the crepe looked like melted cheese, but it actually quite resembles a Mexican tortilla – only with holes... The crepe was filled to the brim. The recommended way to eat this is to break a piece of the crepe and create small portions by using this piece to pick up some of the meat and shrimps.

21:00: Waiting between the starters and mains, keeping to guess where the waitress is from... I think she’s Ukraine! There’s a weird trend at Asian restaurants in London of having East European people working there, we’re still not sure what this means...

Back to the point, the food: For main, my beloved had the Pho soup (£8.25), that included steak slices, beef meatballs and a plate of sprout, green leaves and chilli to add according to taste. Judging by his updates (and there weren’t many... Either he really enjoyed the food or he didn’t have much to say to me... I prefer the 1^st option) he enjoyed the soup, his bowl contained a serious quantity of meat, and I think I should’ve placed a ‘do not disturb while I’m having this soup’ sign at the entrance :)

I had to deal with a huge bowl of Bun Noodles (£8.95) - it’s actually not a soup but a dish of rice noodles at room temperature, which also contained lots of vegetables, shrimps, and veggie spring roll. The sauce was great, it wasn’t too hot to make one nervous, and at some point I raised my hands, I simply couldn’t finish it, the dishes here are all big and very generous!

For dessert we shared that most Vietnamese of desserts – the ‘Banana Fritter’ (fried banana) with ginger ice-cream which gave a very good ‘sting’ to the ‘teeth-hurting’ sweetness of the bananas (£4.25) – we licked our fingers!

21:50: OMG! They don’t have Espresso!! I told you, it’s a pity my beloved doesn’t have a brownies and coffee blog!

21:55: Aha... turns out the waitress in question is Estonian – even more exotic that Vietnam!

נכון שאין כמו המסעדה השכונתית, זו שקרובה לבית, שמכירים את המלצרים ויודעים מי חביב יותר ומי פחות...שלא משנה מתי למה וכמה, תמיד כיף לאכול שם? אז ככה אנחנו מרגישים במסעדת Lemonia.

Lemonia- מסעדה יוונית שגיליתי באינטרנט כשחיפשתי מסעדת גריל/ בשר, או במילים פשוטות "שיפודיה".

16:30: חיפוש מסעדה באינטרנט מביא תוצאות חיוביות - המסעדה נמצאת ממש ליד הבית (יש!) ולא צריך לנסוע בטיוב (יש! יש!)

16:35: יש להם מקומות פנויים להיום בערב (יש! יש!יש!) (בלונדון, לכל שטות צריך להזמין מקום מראש).

אני מודה, יש לי "שריטה" מסוימת בכל הנוגע לשיפודיות. אני מאוד מאוד אוהבת את הקטע שלהן, הריח עושה לי את זה, וכשכל זה מגיע יחד עם חומוס טוב, סלט מתובל כהלכה ושירות חביב ולא מתפלצן- אני אישה מאושרת.

19:30: יוצאת מהבית, אפילו בלי תיק, האייפון בכיס, לדרך.

19:34: נפגשת עם האהוב מחוץ לתחנת הטיוב הקרובה לביתנו, יש לנו עוד 3 דקות הליכה עד שנגיע.

19:37:מתרשמים ממגוון המדבקות על דלת המסעדה – של ZAGAT, ושאר אתרי/ספרי המלצות למסעדות.

אני מוכנה להסתער!

בכניסה מברכת את פנינו מארחת חייכנית ומקסימה שמלווה אותנו לשלוחן כשבידה צלחת עמוסה בזיתים, מקלות גזר וצנוניות. מדהים לראות שהמסעדה מ-פ-ו-צ-צ-ת! מלאה מקצה לקצה (וזו מסעדה ענקית) והמקום רוחש ומלא חיות- ממש כמו טברנה יוונית אמיתית. מעבר לשולחנות לזוגות או לרביעיות, יש גם שולחנות עגולים שיכולים להושיב סביבם כ-10 אנשים, ונראה שהמסעדה מברכת הגעה של חבורות גדולות , בין אם למסיבת יום-הולדת או אירוע חגיגי אחר, ולא מנסה "לשמור מקומות" עבור זוגות שרק באים לאכול והולכים. כל המלצרים במקום הם גברים, מבוגרים, חייכניים ונחמדים, דבר שדי קשה להיתקל בו בין שאר המסעדות בלונדון שבהן יש לרוב מלצרים/יות צעירים/ות ונרגנים/ות.

19:40: תוך כדי נשנוש הזיתים, מנסים לגבש החלטה מה להזמין. בתפריט יש מבחר אדיר של מנות פתיחה ושל מנות עיקריות כמו: סוגי דגים, פירות-ים, שישליק (שיפודים), בשר בגריל, בשר בבישול ארוך וכו' וכו'.

ההחלטה החשובה הגיעה ועימה המלצר החביב- לראשונות הזמנו צלחת חומוס (£4.85), פיתות (£1) וצזיקי (£4.85). כל מי שחי בחו"ל יודע שחומוס טוב הוא קשה להשגה. עכשיו, לא אתיימר ואומר שאני כזו מומחית גדולה לענייני חומוס, ובטוח יהיו כאלו שיקטלו אותי לגמרי עכשיו, אבל- החומוס בלמוניה טעים. יש לו טעם של חומוס! (ולא של חול/ ממרח לא ברור עם גושים הזויים), השמן זית הולם אותו, וואלה, לא צריך לנסוע עד לאזורים של בני דודינו בלונדון בשביל להשיג חומוס כמו שצריך.

גם הצזיקי לא מאכזב אותנו. החמיצות של יוגורט והלימון מרעננת את הפה ופותחת לנו את התיאבון לקראת הבשר שנמצא כרגע על הגריל ועתיד לנחות אצלנו בצלחת.

למנה העיקרית הזמנתי "עוף אביב" (Spring chicken) (£12.50)- אני יודעת, זה נשמע די נורא כשמתרגמים את שם המנה מאנגלית לעברית, אבל למעשה מדובר במנה מאוד מוכרת ברחבי בריטניה, עוף צעיר בגריל- הבשר נימוח ועסיסי, וכמובן עם ניחוח הגריל שאני כ"כ אוהבת. כדי לא להתפרע לגמרי הזמנתי סלט לתוספת (ולא צ'יפס, אורז וכדומה) - אחרי הכל היה לי החומוס +הפיתות בהתחלה (:

20:00: נא לא להפריע... אני אוכלת עם הידיים וטעים לי!

האהוב הזמין שישליק כבש ואורז לתוספת (£14.00). הבשר היה כ"כ עסיסי, מתובל נכון ובאופן שלא משתלט על הטעם העדין של הכבש. גם הירקות שחצצו בין חתיכות הבשר היו טעימים בטירוף ולא הצלחתי להפסיק לאכול לו את הבצלים הצלויים, מה שנקרא- הצלחה!

20:30: קשה לי להיפרד מהצלחת שלי...היה לי כ"כ טעים שהייתי מוכנה לחזור על כל זאת שוב...

לקינוח החלטנו להתפרע עוד טיפונת והזמנו משולש בקלאווה (£3.85) אחד לשנינו ואספרסו כמובן (£1.70). לפני שהגישו לנו את הקינוח הניחו על השולחן שני ריבועי רחת-לקום, עם המון המון אבקת סוכר עליהם. אני אוהבת רחת- לקום ומסוגלת לחסל קופסאות- מזל שיש רק שניים.

הבקלאווה הונחה על השלחן והאהוב בא לחתוך ממנה בשיא הנונשלנטיות, רק שאני זעקתי זעקה קטנה של "רגע- חצי חצי!" אני קצת רכושנית בקינוחים...אני לא יודעת להשוות את הבקלאווה הזו למקומות אחרים, אבל מבחינתי היא הכי טעימה בעולם. בצק העלים קראנצ'י ונימוח בו-זמנית, הפיסטוקים טריים, והדבש מתוק מתוק מתוק. עונג.

אני חושבת שכבר הבנתם שאני ממליצה בחום על מסעדת למוניה, ואם רגשות האשם לא נותנים לכם מנוח אז תמיד אפשר לצאת לסיבוב ב-PRIMROSE HILL, הגבעה הכי גבוהה בלונדון שנמצאת 2 דקות הליכה מהמסעדה, לטפס וליהנות מהנוף המרהיב.

YASSOO... My Favorite Greek

Is there anything better than the neighbourhood restaurant, the one close to your house, where you know all the waiters and you know who is nice and who isn’t... where no matter when, why and how, it’s always fun to eat there? That’s how we feel about LEMONIA – a Greek place I found on the web when I was looking for a meat/grill restaurant, the closest I can find to resemble Middle Eastern/Mediterranean meat eateries back home.

16:30: Web search brings up positive results – restaurant just near home (yay!) no need to take the Tube (yay! Yay!)

16:35: They have a table for 2 for tonight (yay! Yay! Yay!) (In London, you need to book everything in advance).

I confess I have a weak spot about meat eateries. I love their thing, the smell hits just the right spot, and when it comes with good hummus, a well-dressed salad and a fun service without being obnoxious – I become a happy woman.

19:30: Leaving home, not taking even my bag, I-Phone in my pocket, I’m on my way.

19:34: Met my beloved out of the Tube near our home, we have 3 minutes to walk until we get there.

19:37: Scanning the impressive array of stickers on the restaurant door – Zagat (link) and other restaurant recommendation books/sites.

I’m ready to rock!

A lovely hostess smiles at us at the entrance, carrying a platter full with olives, carrot sticks and pieces of radish. It’s amazing to see that the restaurant is COMPLETELY FULL from end to end (and it’s a big dining hall), and the place is teeming with lively activity – just like you’d imagine a true Greek Taverna. They have not only tables for couples or foursomes, but also round tables that can seat around 10 people, and it seems that they encourage people to arrive in big parties, whether for a birthday or any other festive event, and doesn’t try to cater mainly for couples who only come to eat and move on to somewhere else. All the waiters here are men who seem to be professional waiters after the European tradition – older and more cheerful and smiley than the typical youngster hipster-but-eternally-frustrated types that you meet in most London restaurants.

19:40: Nibbling on the olives and trying to decide what to order. The menu includes an awesome range of starters and mains such as: various fish, seafood, shashlik (skewers), grilled meat, stew, and so on and on.

The important decision arrived and so did the lovely waiter – for starters we ordered a plate of hummus (£4.85), pitta bread (£1) and zatziki (£4.85). Every person from the Middle East who lives abroad knows that good hummus is hard to come by. Now, I don’t pretend to be a big expert in hummus, and I’m sure some people will criticize me for what I’m about to say, but – I liked Lemonia’s hummus. It tasted like hummus! (and not sand / a weird paste with strange lumps), the olive oil suited it well – it turns out you don’t need to go into the depths of Edgware Road or Marble Arch to find decent hummus in London.

The zatziki doesn’t disappoint us either. The sourness of the yoghurt and lemon refreshes our mouths and opens our appetites for the meat, which is now on the grill and will soon land in our plate.

For main I ordered spring chicken (£12.50) – I know the name sounds quite horrible when you read it literally, but it’s actually a very well-known dish in UK – a young grilled chicken, the meat is juicy and moist and melts in your mouth, and it comes of course with the smell of grill which I love so much. So as not to go too much over the top I ordered a salad side dish (and not chips, rice, or something like that) – after all I had the hummus + pitta bread to start with J

20:00: Do not disturb... I’m having fun eating with my hands!

My beloved ordered a lamb shashlik with rice as side dish (£14.00). The meat was very juicy, and was seasoned correctly so that it didn’t overrule the gentle taste of the lamb. I also liked the vegetables that came between the pieces of meat and I couldn’t stop stealing his roasted caramelized onions, in other words – a success!

20:30: Hard to say goodbye to my plate... it was so good I’m ready to do it all again...

For desserts we decided to get a bit more crazy and we ordered a piece of baklava (£3.85), one for both of us to share, and of course espresso (£1.70). Before they served the dessert they placed on our table two cubes of Turkish Delight, with sugar icing on top. I love Turkish Delight and can eat whole boxes of it – luckily we only got two.

As the baklava was put on our table my beloved started cutting it nonchalantly, but I cried ‘wait! Cut me a half!’ – I’m a little greedy about deserts... I can’t compare this baklava to other places, but from my perspective it was the best in the world. The puff pastry was crunchy and melted in my mouth at the same time, the pistachios were delicious, and the honey was sweet sweet sweet. A pleasure.

I think by now you got the idea that I warmly recommend the LEMONIA, and if after eating there you are feeling some guilt, you can always go to nearby Primrose Hill (link), the tallest hill in London which is 2 minutes walk from the restaurant, where you can climb and enjoy the stunning view.

Italian- From The 80’S With Love

FROM THE 80’S WITH LOVE

Some days you just don’t feel like cooking, you don’t have any inspiration, didn’t remember to defrost meat (shhh... don’t tell anybody I don’t buy fresh meat from the butcher every day), or you simply feel like getting out of home and eating simple, quick and cheap food. Exactly for this kind of situations it’s good to have restaurants with good food, that are close to home and you don’t need to think too much or take a look at the bank account before you leave home. Last Saturday was such a day.

12:30: Going for lunch with friends, they promised an Italian that won’t disappoint me. we shall see...

14:00: In Golders Green, the ‘iconic’ Jewish/Israeli area of London.

The restaurant in question is ‘L’Artista’ – an Italian place that by the looks of it reminds me of a well-known and much-loved meat eatery back home where the cook/grillman/waiter/owner grunts at me asking if I want one or two skewers and that the pitta breads are in the box near the fridge where the drinks are. ‘L’Artista’ is under the train bridge (just like eateries back home that are located in gas stations) so we choose to sit in the closed terrace – otherwise, our friend warns us, every time the train passes over, the food ‘dances’ in our plates and the noise is unbearable! So, we’ll sit in the terrace, where we can enjoy fresh air and less noise that becomes louder in closed spaces.

14:05: a bit shocked by the number of different dishes on the menu...

According to an unwritten law, if you see many different dishes in the menu, you need to re-consider staying at the restaurant, and if the menu includes pictures than it’s time to run away! Luckily this time there are no pictures and I’m trying to convince myself that the food must be good, since our friends know who they’re dealing with (me). The menu includes a generous range of warm and cold starters, followed by pastas, pizzas, and meaty main courses. The main impression is being easily confused and not knowing what we really feel like ordering.

We decided to share 3 starters and take a main for each, and gave up on the wine since yesterday was our friend’s birthday and we had enough drinks at his party for several days – there’s nothing like water, nature’s own champagne, directly from the tap...

There’s a whole show at this small Italian eatery here in North London when they bring the food to the table. Not only I kept everybody from eating because I need to take pictures (for you my dear readers) but the team of waiters surrounded the table with lovely Italian heartiness and suggested black pepper, more drinks, and just in general does anybody require anything else. Additionally, someone whispered in my ear that if you tell the waiter that someone from your table has a birthday, they kick off a whole party at the restaurant: all the waiters will go on a parade including music and crashing pots and pans and singing ‘happy birthday’ in a heavy Italian accent. I wanted so much to tell the waiter that both me and our friend had our birthdays earlier this week... I love those things so much but I felt merciful for my friend who was still in a slight state of intoxication from last night J In order to console myself I conjured a shared memory between me and my friends from a few years ago when we went to a place in Tel Aviv where the bartenders climb on top of the bar and dance to an Oriental-tuned ‘happy birthday’ melody... hilarious!

14:30: Starters are here... they’re huge – definitely good value for money and it’s good that we decided to share.

Our first course, Antipasti Italiano, turned out to be a plate full of top-class charcuterie (not kosher), olives, gherkins, and mini onions (7.20£). It was spot on and we finished it almost as quickly as it arrived to our table. We also ordered the Insalata Primavera – slices of Italian bread with melted goat cheese and green salad with dried tomatoes (6.80£). Maybe the bread could’ve been a bit more special, but the cheese made up to it, with a delicate taste that left us happy. The third starter we ordered was Tricolore, a simple plate of slices of tomato, avocado and mozzarella. I don’t have that much to say about this dish – because it was just slices of vegetables, but the mozzarella, for a change, had a taste, as opposed to mozzarella you buy at random from the supermarket or get at restaurants that don’t really care about their customers, where it tastes mostly like water with only a little bit of texture.

15:00: The waiters march proudly bearing our mains.

Everybody except for me ordered pastas, while I went for a veal escalope in bread crumbs. There are several reasons I don’t tend to order pasta at Italian restaurants: 1) They always serve you a mountain of pasta and I don’t know how to deal with the size of it, so more than half the portion goes to the bin. 2) After I travelled in Italy I realized that real pasta can be found only in Italy: pasta is supposed to be a day-to-day cheap dish (if you go by the Italian tradition), only in restaurants, it seems they often forget about this ‘principle of simplicity’, so either they inflate the price or the end result is not something.

Anyway, as the mains arrived to the table, two waiters popped up again (after the parade I mentioned before). One of them was skinny and had a pepper grounder, and the other was a chubby fellow who held a grader and a piece of parmesan cheese. We all indulged in the final touch and got on with the eating. My beloved ordered pasta carbonara (£6.60), that wasn’t very impressive except for the size of the portion. The bacon wasn’t crispy enough and the pasta was cooked a few minutes too much... (another reason I don’t like having pasta in restaurants).

GD also got a mountain of pasta in cream sauce, Tagliatelle al Salmon (£7.70). Judging by the way his plate was clean after the fact it seems that it was tasty, since the portion was very big, so if he managed to finish it, it means he was very very hungry (or had a lot of drinks last night).

From the moment we took our seats MD announced her intention to order what ended up being the best dish on our table, Tagliatelle Verdi ai Broccoli (£7.20) – a green dish with a lot of veg, some chilli and light olive oil that doesn’t make you feel terribly guilty like cream sauce would. Her dish impressed me mainly because the pasta was well-made (‘al dente’) – not too cooked and with an interesting taste you don’t meet at every average Italian restaurant.

The veal escalope I ordered (£9.10) didn’t rock my world. It was good, almost as big as the plate (and that was big), but I have a feeling the meat wasn’t the freshest in the world and that they didn’t really put too much effort into the seasoning of the bread crumbs crust. I was disappointed that the escalope was lonely in the big plate (although it filled the whole of it) except for 2 pieces of lettuce and a slice of tomato – maybe I expect too much, and maybe it was a mistake not to ask if it comes with a side-dish, or maybe it was the waiter’s fault? Having an escalope is alright, but what about some mashed potatoes to go with it or something like that? The dish was OK... but I don’t believe I’ll order this again, sorry to say that.

15:45: Remember I wrote earlier about restaurants where you need to simply get up and leave if you see pictures in the menu? So now we reached desserts. The desserts menu reminded us the Brighton seafront – both colourful and cheesy at the same time, with all the dodgy ornaments and constructions they created around the ice-creams and the banana split... a bit weird.

While trying to fight the time machine and understand how we got thrown back to the early eighties all of a sudden (I was almost worried that my calf warmers will get wet and expected Cindy Lauper to come through my walkman headphones when I realized I have none at the moment), we ordered a cake called Banoffie Cake (£3.90). In the fancy menu the cake was presented in a very authentic-looking terracotta bowl, and the name of the dish called up good stories of guys who came back from India and tried to reconstruct the taste of Goa. Additionally we ordered cream profiteroles with chocolate sauce (£3.90). Let’s put it this way: this wasn’t a huge success for the sweet department, it wasn’t worth the calories or the price. The Banoffie cake saw better days, and the profiteroles seemed to be an attempt by the restaurant to get rid of their stock of cream left out from the times when ‘creaming’ food was in vogue (the eighties again). It would’ve been better had we stayed with the taste of the mains rather than the dessert. Luckily the espresso was very good (better than many places in London that don’t really excel in this area)!

To summarize, if you ignore my snipes, the place is very good for informal meals, families with kids, and especially if you feel like eating quickly for a good price. I think I will return to this place, only the next time I will announce that somebody has a birthday (just for the laughs), and I will have my dessert in a place that belongs to the new millennium.

יש את הימים האלה שפשוט לא מתחשק לבשל, אין השראה,לא זכרתי להפשיר בשר (ששש...לא לספר שאני לא הולכת כל יום לקצב וקונה בשר טרי) או שסך הכל בא לנו לצאת מהבית ולאכול אוכל פשוט, מהיר וזול. בדיוק בשביל מצבים מסוג זה נחמד שיש מסעדות עם אוכל טוב, שקרובות לבית ושלא צריך לחשוב יותר מדי או להציץ בחשבון הבנק לפני שיוצאים מהבית. יום שבת האחרון היה יום שכזה.

12:30: קבענו לארוחת צהריים עם זוג חברים, הם הבטיחו לי מסעדה איטלקית שלא תאכזב אותי. אנחנו עוד נראה...

14:00: אנחנו בגולדרס גרין, השכונה הישראלית/יהודית ה"אייקונית" של לונדון. המסעדה המדוברת היא "לארטיסטה" - מסעדה איטלקית שמבחינה חיצונית מצליחה להזכיר לי מזללת שיפודים מוכרת ואהובה עלי במיוחד בארץ שבה המוכר צועק עלי אם אני רוצה שיפוד אחד או שניים ושאקח את הפיתות מהארגז שליד המקרר משקאות. "לארטיסטה" נמצאת מתחת לגשר הרכבת (מקביל למזללות בארץ שנמצאות בתחנות דלק) ולכן אנחנו בוחרים לשבת במרפסת המקורה, אחרת, מזהיר אותנו החבר שבכל פעם שהרכבת עוברת, האוכל בצלחת רוקד והרעש פשוט בלתי נסבל! לכן, נשב במרפסת, שם לפחות יש אוויר ופחות רעש שמתגבר בחללים סגורים.

14:05: קצת הלם מכמות המנות השונות בתפריט...

יש חוק לא כתוב: ככל שיש בתפריט יותר מנות כך צריך לשקול את הישארותך במסעדה ועל אחת כמה וכמה אם בתפריט מופיעות גם תמונות אז יש לנוס על נפשך! למזלי הפעם לא היו תמונות ואני מנסה לשכנע את עצמי שהאוכל חייב להיות טוב, כי החברים כבר יודעים עם מי יש להם עסק. התפריט כולל מבחר מכובד של מנות פתיחה קרות וחמות, פסטות, פיצות, ובשרים לעיקריות. בעיקר אפשר להתבלבל בקלות ולא ממש לדעת מה מתחשק להזמין.

החלטנו לחלוק בינינו 3 מנות ראשונות ומנה עיקרית לכל אחד, ויתרנו על יין כי יום לפני היה לחבר יומולדת ושתינו שם מספיק בשביל כמה ימים, ואין כמו מים- השמפניה של הטבע, רק מהברז.

במזללה האיטלקיה הקטנה של לונדון יש שואו שלם סביב הבאת האוכל לשולחן. לא רק שאני עיכבתי את כולנו מלאכול כי צריך לצלם (עבורכם קוראים יקרים) אלא שגם צוות המלצרים עט על השולחן באדיבות איטלקית חביבה בהצעות של תוספת פלפל שחור, עוד שתיה, ואם במקרה משהו חסר למישהו. בנוסף, ציפור קטנה לחשה לי שאם אומרים למלצר שיש למישהו מיושבי השולחן יום-הולדת אז יש חגיגה שלמה במסעדה. כל המלצרים יצאו במצעד שכולל תופים ומצילות וישירו "יומולדת שמח" במבטא איטלקי כבד. כל כך רציתי לומר למלצר שגם לי וגם לחבר היה יומולדת באותו השבוע... אני מאוד אוהבת את השטויות האלה אבל ריחמתי על החבר שהיה שרוי בחמרמורת קלה מליל אמש (: הסתפקתי בזיכרון משותף לי ולחברותי מלפני כמה שנים ממקום בתל אביב שבו הברמנים עומדים על הבר ורוקדים לצלילי "יומולדת שמח" בקצב מזרחי. קורע!

14:30 מנות הפתיחה בידינו... הן ענקיות- בהחלט נותנות תמורה נאה עבור הכסף וטוב שהחלטנו לחלוק. המנה הראשונה הראשונה שלנו, Antipasti Italiano, צלחת מלאה כל טוב של נקניקים (לא כשרים), זיתים, חמוצים ומיני בצלצלים (£7.20) סיפקה את הסחורה וחוסלה באותה מהירות בה הגיעה לשולחן.

בנוסף הזמנו Insalata Primavera – פרוסות לחם איטלקי עם גבינת עיזים מותכת וסלט ירוק עם עגבניות מיובשות(£6.80). אולי הלחם יכול היה להיות טיפה מיוחד יותר, אבל הגבינה פיצתה על כך, בטעם עדין ומעניין שהשאיר אותנו מרוצים. מנת הפתיחה השלישית שהזמנו היא ,Tricolore צלחת פשוטה של פרוסות עגבניה, אבוקדו ומוצרלה. אין לי המון מה לומר על המנה הזו- כי היא סה"כ פרוסות של ירקות, אבל למוצרלה לשם שינוי היה טעם, בניגוד למוצרלה מהסופר או ממסעדות שלא ממש משקיעות בסועדים שלהן שיש לה בעיקר טעם של מים עם מעט טקסטורה.

15:00 מצעד המלצרים מגיע בגאון לקראתנו חמושים במנות העיקריות שלנו. כולם פרט אלי הזמינו פסטות ואילו אני החלטתי על שניצל עגל. יש כמה סיבות לכך שאינני נוטה להזמין פסטות במסעדות איטלקיות: 1) תמיד מגיע הר של פסטה שאני לא יודעת איך להתמודד עם הגודל שלו, ויותר מחצי מנה נזרקת לפח. 2) אחרי שהייתי באיטליה הבנתי שפסטה אמיתית אוכלים רק באיטליה: פסטה אמורה להיות אוכל יומיומי וזול להכנה (על פי כל הסטנדרטים האיטלקיים), רק שבמסעדות, שכחו מ"עיקרון הפשטות", ואו שמפוצצים במחיר או שהתוצאה הסופית היא לא משהו.

בכל מקרה, עם הגעת המנות לשולחן שוב צצו שני מלצרים (נוסף למצעד שהזכרתי קודם), האחד רזה ובידו פילפלייה והשני שמנמן חביב עם מגרדת וגוש גבינת פרמז'ן. כולנו מתמסרים לטא'צ האחרון וקדימה לאכול. האהוב הזמין פסטה קרבונרה (£6.60) שלא היתה מרשימה למדי מלבד גודל המנה. הבייקון לא היה קריספי מספיק והפסטה היתה מבושלת כמה דקות יותר מדי....(עוד סיבה לחוסר חיבתי לפסטה במסעדות).

ג' קיבל גם כן הר פסטה ברוטב שמנת וסלמון,£7.70)Tagliatelle al Salmon ), שעל פי ניקיון הצלחת שלו לאחר מעשה ניכר כי היה טעים כי המנה היתה ממש גדולה, כך שאם סיימת אותה, סימן שהיית ממש ממש רעב (או ששתית מספיק בערב קודם).

מ' הצהירה מהרגע שהתיישבנו על כוונתה להזמין את מה שתסתבר להיות המנה הטעימה בשולחן, Tagliatelle Verdi ai Broccoli (£7.20) - פסטת ברוקולי ירוקה עם המון ירק, מעט צ'ילי ושמן זית קליל שלא גורם לתחושות אשמה אדירות כמו רוטב שמנת למשל. המנה שלה הצליחה להרשים אותי בעיקר מהסיבה שהפסטה היתה מוכנה כראוי- לא מבושלת מדי וגם עם טעם מעניין שלא פוגשים בו בכל מסעדה איטלקית ממוצעת.

שניצל העגל (£9.10) שהזמנתי לא הרטיט את עולמי. הוא היה טעים, בגודל של הצלחת כמעט (וזו היתה גדולה) אבל יש לי תחושה שהבשר לא היה הכי טרי בעולם ושלא ממש השקיעו בתיבול הציפוי שלו. התאכזבתי מכך ששניצל היה בודד בצלחת הגדולה (אומנם שהוא מילא את כולה) מלבד 2 עלי חסה ופרוסת עגבניה - אולי אני מצפה ליותר מדי, ואולי עשיתי טעות שלא שאלתי אם השניצל מגיע עם תוספת כל שהיא, או שאולי זו היתה פאשלה של המלצר? זה בסדר לאכול שניצל, אבל מה עם איזה פירה תפו"א בצד? משהו? היה חביב.. אבל לא נראה לי שאזמין את זה שוב, חבל.

15:45: זוכרים שכתבתי קודם על מסעדות שצריך פשוט לקם וללכת אם בתפריט יש תמונות להמחשה? אז הנה הגענו לשלב הקינוחים. תפריט הקינוחים הצליח להזכיר ל ג' את כיכר העצמאות בנתניה בעיקר בגלל כל הקישוטים והקונסטרוקציות המוזרות שניסו ליצור עם הגלידות והבננה ספליט...הזוי קצת (לשם הבהרה- ג' הוא נתנייתי במקור).

בעודנו מנסים להאבק במכונת הזמן ולהבין איך לפתע חזרנו לשנות ה-80 המוקדמות, (רק חסר שהחותלות שלי ירטבו בגשם ושאאזין לסינדי לאופר באוזניות של הווקמן), הזמנו עוגה שנקראת עוגת בנופי (£3.90), בתפריט המפואר העוגה הוצגה בקערת טרקוטה מושקעת, והשם של המנה הזכיר לי לטובה סיפורים יפים של חבר'ה שחזרו מהודו וניסו לשחזר את הטעם שהיה בגואה. בנוסף הזמנו מנה של כדורי קצפת במעטפת פריכה ורוטב שוקולד (£3.90). בואו נגיד ככה, הצלחה כבירה לא היתה שם במתחם המתוקים, לא שווה את הקלוריות וגם לא את הכסף. עוגת הבנופי ראתה ימים יפים יותר, וכדורי הקצפת הרגישו כמו תירוץ של המקום להיפטר ממלאי השמנת שלהם מימי "הקרמת" האוכל (גם כן מנהג של שנות ה-80). עדיף היה להישאר עם הטעם של האוכל מאשר של הקינוח. מזל שהאספרסו היה מצויין (יותר טוב ממקומות רבים בלונדון שלא ממש מצטיינים בתחום)!

לסיכומו של דבר, למרות כמה קטילות שלי, המקום מתאים מאוד לארוחות לא מחייבות, למשפחות עם ילדים ובעיקר אם מתחשק לאכול בזול ומהר. אני חושבת שאחזור לשם, רק שבפעם הבאה אכריז על יומולדת של מישהו (רק כדי להתפקע מצחוק) ואת הקינוח אעשה במקום אחר ששייך לעידן שנות ה-2000.

דגים, זה מרגש אותי

"אין דבר מרגש יותר מאשר דג שבושל בשיא הפשטות" (ר. סטיין)

ריק סטיין הוא אחד מהשפים "הבכירים" באנגליה ולמעשה הוא השליט הבלתי רשמי של עיירה קטנה בשם פדסטו (Padstow) שנמצאת במחוז קורנוול שבדרום אנגליה. לסטיין יש חמש מסעדות ועוד בייקרי, דלי, חנות למוצרי בישול ומזכרות ואפילו מלון. אי אפשר לחמוק משמו ופועלו של סטיין כשמסתובבים בעיירה הזו שעל שפת האוקיינוס האטלנטי, ואני,כמו שרק אני יודעת לעשות בטיולים, עושה את מה שבאמת חשוב והוא הלו"ז הקולינרי, מה שאומר, להודיע מתי הולכים ל"ביקור המלכותי" במסעדת פירות הים המפורסמת שלו.

בכל סופ"ש אחרון של אוגוסט יש באנגליה מה שנקרא "בנק הולידיי". תוספת של יום לסוף השבוע, מה שמאפשר לקחת חופשה נינוחה שגם מספיקים בה משהו. יצאנו לטייל במחוז קורנוול שבדרום אנגליה, איזור שמאופיין בנופים ירוקים להפליא, מפגשים דרמטיים של צוקים עם הים וכמובן המון אוכל ים משובח.

יום שבת, 18:00 חזרנו יחד עם ג' ו מ' לצימר המקסים שלנו באמצע השום מקום, לאחר יום טיול מעולה. התארגנות מהירה וקדימה לדרך.

19:00 "תכנסי כבר לאוטו וניסע"... יצאנו לדרך!

19:30 אני כבר ממש מתרגשת- אנחנו בפדסטו, עיירה ממש חמודה והשם של סטיין מציץ מכל פינה! ממש האח הגדול. אמרנו ביי ביי לג' ומ'- הם לא אוכלים פרות ים- הפסד שלהם.

19:45: בכניסה מקבל אותנו מארח חביב, עם מבטא בריטי מוזר (לא לונדוני- אליו כבר התרגלתי), לקח לנו את המעילים (מה לעשות- פה כבר באוגוסט מרגישים את החורף מתקרב) והוביל אותנו למקומות שלנו על הבר. אני חייבת לציין שניסיתי להזמין מקומות למסעדה כשבועיים מראש, אבל משום שמדובר היה בסופ"ש בו כל אנגליה בחופש, לא הצלחנו להשיג שולחן שאינו על הבר. לי אישית אין בעיה עם ישיבה שכזו- הרבה פעמים מקבלים פינוקים מהברמן, והרי זה משובח. המסעדה עצמה מעוצבת בפשטות אלגנטית. ריהוט עץ בהיר, מפות לבנות ותמונות שמתאימות למוזיאון לאומנות מודרנית על הקירות. בכניסה מקבל את פנינו קיר בקבוקי יין מרשים, אשר בין היתר מציג גם את ליין היינות של אדון ריק סטיין....האח הגדול כבר אמרתי?

עם קבלת התפריט אני נמלאת התרגשות וכמו ילדה בחנות ממתקים לא יודעת במה לבחור. אחרי אלימינציה מהירה של כל הצדפות למיניהן שאסור לי לאכול לצערי הרב, ראיתי שבעצם מי שמככבים בתפריט הם הסרטנים והלובסטרים, וואו איזו חגיגה שתהיה פה היום! לא יכולה לחכות שיביאו לי את כלי המשחית - הפלייר לניתוץ השריון- אני מוכנה להזמין! SHOOT

לפתיחה קיבלנו סלסלת לחמים וחמאה, ומנת פינוק מהשף, מעין כדורים קטנים של שרימפס עטופים בטמגו (חביתה יפנית) עם רוטב אסייתי מתקתק- טעים. הזמנו גם יין, סוביניון בלאן- שיתאים למנות שהזמנו (£24).

נראה לי שלא אכביר במילים לגבי המנה הראשונה שלי ופשוט תראו בעצמכם בתמונה. אין מילים בפי כדי לתאר את הפלא הזה. כמה פשוט וככה טעים. מדובר בסלט בשר לובסטר,שעועית ירוקה, אבוקדו וכבד אווז בתיבול שמן זית וחומץ בלסמי (£16.5).....אילו רק הייתי יכולה ללקק את הצלחת בסוף...

אין דברים כאלה- באמת

האהוב הזמין JAMON IBERICO, מנה שבתפריט מתוארת כ"נקניק החזיר המשומר הטוב בעולם"! ולפני שהוגש לצלחת- הואכל החזיר בלא פחות מאצטרובלים ותאנים ויושן למשך 3 שנים לפחות (£16.5). המנה מומלצת להגשה (ואכן קיבלנו את ההמלצה...) בתוספת כוסית יין שרי לבן מתקתק שטעמי המוסקט שלו משתלבים נהדר עם ניחוח התאנים של הנקניק (£4.35). אני חייבת לציין שהצלחת שהגיעה לא היתה הדבר הכי מושך לעין, וחבל שכך, משום שהטעם "נראה" אחרת לגמרי.

20:45: הוציאו את החצוצרות, הכינו את התותחים, המנות העיקריות בדרך!

מי שמכיר אותי יודע שאחד הדברים שאני יותר אוהבת הוא לאכול עם הידיים, ושסכין ומזלג הם רק בגדר המלצה. הזמנתי "סרטן צ'ילי בנוסח סינגפור", זהו סרטן שהוקפץ במחבת ווק יחד עם שום, ג'ינג'ר, צ'ילי וכוסברה (£24.5). בהמשך ההסבר בתפריט, כתוב שהמנה מיועדת עבור אלו שאוהבים לאכול עם הידיים ולהתלכלך באופן מגוחך (הכי אני). כשערכו עבורי את השולחן לקראת הגעת המנה שלי באמת לא הניחו סכו"ם אלא רק פלייר לפיצוח שריונות ומזלגון להוצאת בשר הסרטנים, אקסטרה מפיות וקערת מים חמים ולימון- הם באמת יודעים את העבודה פה.

כבר יצא לי לאכול סרטנים בכל מיני הזדמנויות, אבל הפעם הזו התעלתה על כולן. כמות הבשר בסרטן הוכיחה את נאמנות המסעדה לספק סחורה טרייה ובעונתה, התיבול היה מדוייק ואפילו עבור מישהי שאינה חובבת כוסברה כמוני, נוכחותה לא הפריעה כלל. התלכלכתי לכדי צחוק ונהניתי מכל שניה.

האהוב גם כן התפרע והזמין לובסטר. עכשיו, האהוב שלא כמוני לא באמת אוהב להתעסק עם אוכל, אוהב פשטות ובלי הצורך לחלץ את הבשר מבין הצבתות. גם לאנשים שכמוהו יש מענה! הלובסטר שלו הוכן בשיטה הקלאסית ("נוסח תרמידור") שחווה רנסנס כעת, בה השף "שולף" את בשר הלובסטר, רוקח אותו עם חמאה, שמנת, עשבי תיבול ומעט רוטב עגבניות, ובסופו של דבר מחזיר את הבשר לשריון. הבשר ממש נימוח ונמס בפה, ושם בכיס הקטן מסעדות שמציגות בגאון את הלובסטרים שלהם בקדמת המסעדה בטון של "תראו, אנחנו מוכרים לובסטרים". בצניעות ובכבוד רב לחומר הגלם מוגשת לשולחן מנה פשוטה אך יוקרתית שלא גורמת לסועד להתבאס ששילם ממיטב כספו (£39.5).

21:45 תחושת הניצחון והסיפוק מאכילת האוכל היא חזקה משאוכל לתאר. כל 2-3 ביסים אנחנו פשוט עוצרים ונותנים קריאות כמו: מממ...וואו...יאמ יאמ יאמ...מתי באים לפה שוב?! אילו רק היתה לי קיבה נוספת וחשבון בנק מנופח הייתי עושה הכל, שוב, מההתחלה.

21:50: החלטתי שבא לי לעשות סיבוב "אני בדרך לשולחן שלי" בכל המסעדה רק כדי לראות מה אוכלים בשולחנות אחרים, ותאמינו לי שגם עליהם החגיגה של סטיין לא פסחה. פלטות ענקיות של צדפות, שרימפס דגים וכל טוב הים שאפשר רק לפנטז עליו עד לפעם הבאה שנגיע למסעדה הזו.

21:55 לקינוח החלטנו לחלוק קרם ברולה (£8.5), הרבה חדש לא היה שם פרט לטעם המצוין של הווניל ובכך שהיה קליל מספיק לאחר ארוחה מכובדת. הקראסט של הסוכר היה BY THE BOOK והיה נחמד לטבול את בישקוטי האגוזים והשוקולד הלבן בקרם העדין. פינוק.

כפי שציינתי בתחילה, אחת ה"הטבות" בלשבת באיזור הבר היא הפינוקים, ויחד עם האספרסו הגישו לנו צלחת צפחה שחורה ועליה טרפלס שוקולד וריבועי מרמלדה מסוכרים, תענוגות עד הרגע האחרון.

22.30: יצאנו מהמסעדה בדרכנו חזרה לצימר ומאותו הרגע אנחנו חולמים לחזור. היה מ-ו-ש-ל-ם, יום יבוא ובטוח שנחזור...כבר מתגעגעים.

Fish, It Excites Me

"Nothing is more exhilarating than fresh fish simply cooked" (R. Stein).

Rick Stein is one of the most famous chefs in UK, and he’s also the un-mistakable ruler of a small town named Padstow, located in Cornwall in South-West England. Stein has five restaurants in this town, plus a bakery, a deli, a gift shop and even a hotel. You can’t avoid Stein’s name and contribution to humanity when you wonder around this town on the coast of the Atlantic. I did the same thing I do in all trips – look after the all-important culinary itinerary, which means in this case, to announce when we are going to pay a ‘state visit’ to Rick Stein’s famous seafood restaurant

Every year, the last weekend of August is a Bank Holiday in UK, which means you get an extra day to the weekend, which allows you to take a more relaxed vacation during which you get to do something. So we went on a trip to Cornwall in South England, an area of wonderful green sights, dramatic cliffs falling into the ocean, and of course scrumptious seafood.

Saturday, 18:00: Back together with GD+MD to our lovely cabin in the middle of nowhere, after a day of excellent sightseeing. Quick refresh and we’re on our way out

19:00: ‘Baby I’m ready to go’... we’re on our way!

19:30: Excited to be in Padstow – a very cute town, and Stein’s name is everywhere! Like the Big Brother. We split from GD+MD – they don’t fancy seafood – their loss...

19:45: A lovely host receives us at the entrance, he has a weird accent (not London – we already know that), took our coats (we can fell the winter is approaching though it’s only August) and took us to our seats at the bar. I must say that I tried to book a table about two weeks in advance, but since it’s a weekend when all of the UK are on holiday, we weren’t able to get a table except at the bar. Personally I’m OK with sitting there – in many cases you get special treats from the barman, which improves things a lot. The restaurant itself is designed with elegant simplicity. Light wood furniture, white tablecloths, and paintings that would fit in a modern art gallery on the walls. At the entrance we are greeted by an impressive wall of wine bottles, which presents, among many others, wines from Mr. Stein’s collection... did I mention Big Brother already?

19:50: Got the menu and feeling enthusiastic like a girl in a candy shop who doesn’t know what to choose. After a quick elimination of all the kinds of oysters, which I’m not allowed to eat any, I see that the stars of the menu are crabs and lobsters, wow what a feast this is going to be! Can’t wait for them to bring my tools of destruction – the cracker used to break the lobster’s armour – I’m ready to order! SHOOT!

First off we got a basket of home-made bread and butter and a complimentary mini-dish from the chef – smallish balls of shrimp wrapped by Tamago (Japanese omelette) with a sweety Asian dressing – very tasty. We also ordered Sauvignon Blanc wine that will go well with the dishes we order (£24).

I think I won’t write too much about my starter and you will simply see the pictures for yourselves. I can’t find good enough words to describe this wonder. So simple and yet so delicious. It was a salad of lobster meat, green beans, avocado and foie gras with touches of olive oil and balsamic vinegar (£16.5)... If I could just lick the plate after I finished...Never had anything like it – really!

My beloved ordered Jamon Iberico, a dish described by the menu as ‘the best cured ham in the world’! And before it was served to us – the black pigs were fed no less than acorns (does it really matter that those pigs are black?!) and matured for at least 3 years (£16.5). The dish is recommended with a small glass of white sherry – we were glad to accept the recommendation and the sherry’s Muscat taste went really well with the ham’s aroma (£4.35). I must say that the dish we got didn’t look so nice, and it’s a pity, because the taste was so much better than the dish’s appearance.

20:45: Bring out the trumpets, roll out the cannons, the mains are on their way!

Those who know me know that one of the things I like most is eating with my hands, when a knife and fork are only a recommendation. I ordered the Singapore Chilli Crab – a crab that was stir-fried in a wok with garlic, ginger, chilli and coriander (£24.5). The menu explains, that this dish is for ‘those who love eating with their hands and getting gloriously messy!’ (that’s so me). When they set the table for me just before the dish arrived, they really didn’t put any cutlery, but only a cracker for breaking the armour, a small fork to extract the crab’s meat, extra napkins and a bowl of warm water with lemon – they really know their stuff here.

I had crabs in many places before I got here, but this was the best. The amount of meat the crab had demonstrated the restaurant’s loyalty to providers of fresh product in the right season, the flavours were very accurate, and the presence of the coriander wasn’t disturbing even for somebody who isn’t it’s greatest fan like me. I got silly dirty and enjoyed every second.

My beloved also went crazy with this and ordered a lobster. Now, my beloved, as opposed to me, doesn’t really like to mess around with the food, likes simplicity without the need to extract the meat from between the pincers. There’s something also for people like him! His lobster was prepared in the classical ‘Thermidor’ style which is now going through a renaissance, where the chef pulls out the lobster’s meat, concocts it with butter, cream, herbs and a little tomato sauce, and then puts the meat back into the armour. The meat simply dissolves pleasantly in your mouth, and thrashes the kind of restaurants that show off their lobsters at the front as if saying ‘look, we got lobsters’. Honest and faithful to the ingredients, the dish that got to our table was simple but exquisite, which didn’t make us feel sorry that we paid dearly for it (£39.5).

21:45: The feeling of victory and satisfaction from our food is stronger than I can describe. Every 2-3 bites we simply stop and mumble something like mmm.... wow.... yum yum yum... when are we doing this again?! If I only had a second stomach and an oversized bank account I would do it all again, from the very first minute.

21:50: I decided to go for a ‘I’m on my way to my table’ round the restaurant, just to see what the others are having, and believe me that they were also partying hard with Mr. Stein. Huge plates of oysters, shrimps, fish, and all other gorgeous seafood, of which we can only fantasize until the next time we’ll get to this place.

21:55: For desert we share crème brulee (£8.5), nothing new here except for the excellent taste of vanilla, and the fact that it was light enough after a rather serious meal. The sugar crust was by the book and it was nice to dip the pecan and white chocolate biscotti in the gentle cream. A real indulgence.

As I said in the beginning, one of the perks of sitting at the bar is the complimentary extras, so together with the espresso we got a black slate plate with chocolate truffles and cubes of sugared marmalade, real treats until the last moment.

22:30: Leaving the restaurant on our way to the cabin, already started to dream of getting back here. It was p-e-r-f-e-c-t, one day we will definitely be back... we miss the place already.

WELCOME TO LONDON

For my first post, it’s fun to return to a place that received us to London in the best possible way when we moved here. We arrived at this restaurant in the middle of winter 2011, temperature outside was around 4 degrees C, no matter how heavy we were dressed, it was always cold, and the best part of the story is that two of my best friends joined me and my dear hubby to the upcoming culinary experience. We had so much fun that evening, that since then we return to this restaurant when-ever we feel like celebrating something or just indulge in a superb meal.

BARBECOA is one of the many restaurants owned by the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and his partner the chef Adam Perry Lang. BARBECOA specializes in barbeque food, proud for celebrating the relationship between Food and Fire, how could we survive without those two elements (the way I see it Food is the fifth element after Fire, Earth, Wind and Water which everybody knows). Actually, I found this place by Googling ‘best steak in London’. Not always a random web search leads to such good results, but in this particular case – I got the best I could hope for! So we came prepared for a feast!

BARBECOA is located in the heart of London, in the City, overlooking one of its popular attractions - St. Paul’s Cathedral, where Charles and Diana got married and which was burned almost completely in the 1666 Great Fire. From the moment you walk into the restaurant you can see the cathedral in all its glory and you feel like you’re actually in one of the most beautiful and special places in London.

This time, we come with two friends who came over for holiday, and what place is better to take them if not BARBECOA?!

18:30: Dressed up & ready, reminding my beloved to get out of the office, on my way out to the Tube. It’s great that you don’t need a car to get around London!

18:37: Hope the wind in the Tube station tunnel won’t ruin my hair...

19:20: Arrived at St. Paul’s station, of course I’m early.... Looking around at people passing by, keeping my fashion critic senses sharp!

19:30: My beloved emerges from the Tube looking tired after a day’s work, our guests right after him. Should we go to the place or wander around the Cathedral first?

19:45: Walking around just made us hungrier, finally entering the restaurant!

YEY! We’re here!! Starving!

A lovely hostess receives us at the entrance, leading us to our table. It’s not easy to follow her –some of us are distracted by her looks (guess who of us), and all of us are distracted by the simple fact that the place is so beautiful, the view is hypnotizing, and our heads spin around the open kitchen that captivating scents and noises emanate from it. The hostess seats us on luxurious leather sofas around a huge marble table – let’s get on with it!

After giving our friends a short brief about what they should order and what they can pass (YG actually considered ordering veggie salad!), we decide on starters and mains for everybody; we’ll find out about the deserts only at the end of the meal... after all who knows how will we end this evening? We ordered my favourite wine in the last months – Gewürztraminer, a white mildly spicy sweetish wine, that will blend nicely with our starters (£45).

Service at this place is very light, un-assuming and at the right pace, not too quick but also not of the kind that makes you wonder if the waitress is dying to head for home or she misses her boyfriend and just now decided to call him instead of serving us... (or maybe that’s just my own fears).

20:05: We’ve finally made our decision!!! SHOOT:

For first I ordered Salmon Gravadlax – although the name sounds like a torture device used minioms of Queen Elizabeth (the 1^st), it’s actually a light dish suitable for summer days when you don’t want to indulge too much before the food yet to come – slices of salmon with touches of sour cream, dill and some caviar (Yum), accompanied by a shot of Schnapps placed in the centre of the plate (£11) – a great start for the evening!

GG ordered another interesting starter – Crab Meat Salad (£12), this dish is also light and very well seasoned with a refreshing sense of sour named ‘Green Goddess Dressing’. In case you never heard about this, it’s a winning combination of sour cream, chive, capers, tarragon, a bit of lemon juice, and usually also anchovy. In my opinion, the menu should’ve mentioned that the dressing includes anchovy, many people don’t like finding this fish in their food... but who am I to argue with the enterprise called Jamie Oliver... anyway it was delicious.

For the centre of the table we ordered the restaurant’s famous bread platter (£4). All breads are baked here, they’re using very special techniques to create really special bread flavours that are delicious (of course) and you can’t find them in many other places. For example: black bread, not the one you buy in any shop, but bread that was baked in a coal oven so that it got a black crust bordering on burn with a strong taste that even reminds of stout rich beer.

20:15: Hello! Our starters are here! It’s awesome to see how dishes that are rather simple, which you can find their likes in more than one place nowadays, manage to get surprise cries out of us when they arrive to our table. The dishes are served in a very aesthetic way and their size is a compliment to the diner (and to the price).

21:00: Minimal wait between starters and mains, in the meantime we order another bottle of wine. As you can see from the pictures, all is left for us to do is to eat and enjoy!

My beloved had a hot date with a Pulled Pork Shoulder with barbeque sauce and jalapeño corn bread (£16). The dish’s ingredients give a ‘masculine’ impression (Pork, Shoulder, pulled out of it’s socket, with barbeque and jalapeno...) but actually the tastes blended in together in a nice way, the meat simply dissolved in the mouth. Interestingly, contrary to what you would expect from a meat-and-barbeque restaurant, this dish (and others) doesn’t look like a Slab of Meat, but is designed like a rustic farmer’s dinner meal, made suitable to appear on a Central London table – all that was left for us to do at the end of the meal was to pick the corn bread up and wipe the plate clean.

YG ordered a main that on first glance you wouldn’t think it’s very special – fillet steak with bone marrow, smoked béarnaise, chalets and herb salads (£35). The steak was made just about right but what drove the dish (or the diner) skyward was the bone marrow that was juicy and full of strong meaty taste, exactly what this dish needed.

21:40: As part of the restaurant’s amazing location, we don’t really have a choice but to go out to the roof and enjoy the scenery of this gorgeous city on the background of the bright night sky (yes, summer does arrive to London, for around two weeks every year).

22:00: Tired but happy, we couldn’t really avoid the deserts, so we ordered the Chocolate Nemesis cake (£8) – a mousse cake that melts in your mouth and melts away any feeling of guilt of eating all this chocolate. The cake’s not too heavy, just about right, and you sense immediately that the person who thought of this cake had consummate chocolate-lovers in his mind. The chocolate was sublime and so was the rich Mascarpone ball with some orange zest, we couldn’t ask for more.

The coffee came right on time to help us close off this meal and gave us just enough energy to pay the bill and drag ourselves home.

22:30: Tired, a little bit tipsy but very happy, looking at the bill in shock, not being able to believe how did this happen to us, but not feeling bad for a moment. It was a great dinner for two couples that proved again that Master Jamie and his partner know exactly what they’re doing and make us spread the word onward all the way back home to Israel.

Next week – August Bank Holiday and a hot date with Chef Rick Stein in Cornwall – we’re going to stand in the queue with all the other fans, you can’t really book a table in advance at this place...

ברוכים הבאים ללונדון

לכבוד הפוסט הראשון שלי, חשבתי שיהיה כיף לחזור למסעדה שקיבלה אותנו בצורה המדהימה ביותר ללונדון. אקדים ואספר שהגענו למסעדה הזו בפעם הראשונה בשיאו של חורף 2011, כשהטמפרטורה בחוץ היתה כ-4 מעלות, לא משנה כמה שכבות לבשנו, תמיד היה קר, והחלק הכי טוב של הסיפור הוא ששתיים מחברותיי הטובות הצטרפו אלי ולבעלי היקר לחוויה הקולינרית שעתידה להגיע. הערב ההוא היה כל כך מוצלח וכיפי, שמאז אנחנו מגיעים למסעדה הזו בכל פעם שבא לנו לחגוג משהו או פשוט להתפנק בארוחה מצויינת.

מדובר במסעדת "ברבקואה" (Barbecoa), מסעדה אחת מני רבות של השף הידוע ג'יימי אוליבר ושותפו השף אדם פרי לאנג. "ברבקואה" מוגדרת כמסעדת בשרים וככזו שחוגגת את המערכת היחסים בין אוכל ואש, שני יסודות (אוכל הוא היסוד החמישי מבחינתי אחרי אש, אדמה, אויר ומים המוכרים לכולם) שאיך היינו יכולים לחיות בלעדיהם? למעשה, מצאתי את המסעדה תוך חיפוש בגוגל בשאלה "איפה ניתן למצוא את הסטייק הטוב ביותר בלונדון?". לא תמיד חיפוש שרירותי באינטרנט מוביל למציאות טובות במיוחד, אבל במקרה הספציפי הזה- מוצלח בריבוע! החלטנו לבוא לחגיגה!

"ברבקואה" נמצאת בליבה של לונדון, ב"סיטי" החלק העיסקי של העיר ומשקיפה על אחת האטרקציות התיירותיות הפופולאריות, וזו קתדלרת סנט-פול, אותה כנסייה ענקית ומפורסמת בה התחתנו צ'ארלס ודיאנה וגם אותה אחת שנשרפה כמעט עד היסוד בשנת1666 בשריפה הגדולה של לונדון. מהרגע בו נכנסים למסעדה רואים את הקתדרלה בשיא תפארתה ומרגישים שנמצאים באמת באחד המקומות היפים ומיוחדים בעיר.

הפעם, אנחנו הולכים למסעדה יחד עם זוג חברים מהארץ שהגיעו לחופשה בלונדון, ואיזה מקום מתאים יותר מאשר "ברבקואה"?!

18:30: סיימתי להתלבש, הזכרתי לאהוב לצאת מהעבודה ואני בדרכי החוצה מהבית לכיוון הטיוב. איזה כיף שבלונדון לא צריך אוטו!

18:37: אני בטיוב, רק שהרוח במדרגות התחנה לא תחרב לי את השיער...

19:20: הגעתי לתחנת St Paul’s , כמובן שאני מקדימה...אסתכל ואבחן בדקדקנות את העוברים והשבים ברחוב, ככה אני שומרת על חוש הביקורת שלי בכושר (:

19:30: האהוב מגיח מהטיוב עם מבט של עייפות מיום עבודה, ומיד אחריו יוצאים גם האורחים שלנו. נלך למסעדה או שנעשה ס"ד סביב הכנסייה?

19:45: אחרי הסיבוב שרק פיתח את הרעב סוף סוף נכנסים למסעדה!

YEYאנחנו פה!! מתים מרעב!

בכניסה למסעדה מקבלת את פנינו מארחת חביבה, שמיד מובילה אותנו לעבר השולחן. קצת קשה לעקוב אחריה – עבור חלקנו משום שהיא חביבה כאמור (גם למראה), ועבור כולנו - מהסיבה הפשוטה שהמסעדה כ"כ יפה, הנוף מסביב מהפנט, והמטבח הפתוח עם הריחות והרחשים הבוקעים ממנו מסובבים את הראש. המארחת מושיבה אותנו סביב שולחן שיש ענק שסביבו ספת עור מפנקת, קדימה לחגיגה!

לאחר תדרוך קצר שהעברתי לחברים שלנו על מה שווה להזמין ועל מה כדאי לוותר (י' חשבה להזמין סלט ירקות!) הוחלט על מנה ראשונה ועיקרית לכל אחד, על הקינוח נדע כמובן רק בסוף הארוחה. אחרי הכול מי יודע באיזה מצב צבירה נסיים את הערב. הזמנו את היין החביב עלי בחודשים האחרונים- גוורצטרמינר, יין לבן מתקתק ובעל חריפות נעימה- שתשתלב מצויין עם המנות הראשונות (£45) .

השירות במקום הוא מאוד קליל ולא מתיימר ובקצב הנכון, לא מהיר מדי וגם לא כזה שגורם לך לתהות האם המלצרית החליטה לחתוך הביתה או שהיא מתגעגעת לחבר שלה והחליטה בדיוק עכשיו להתקשר אליו... (תהיות אישיות שלי).

20:05: החלטנו סוף סוף מה להזמין!!! SHOOT :

למנה ראשונה הזמנתי גרבדלאקס סלמון (Salmon Gravadlax) – למרות השם שנשמע כמו מכשיר עינויים שהשתמר מימי אליזבת (הראשונה), מדובר במנה קלילה מתאימה לימים של קיץ בהם לא רוצים "להתפוצץ" מהאוכל שבא אחר-כך – רצועות סלמון המלווות בנגיעות רוטב שמנת חמוצה שמיר ומעט קוויאר (Yum) יחד עם שוט של שנאפס במרכז הצלחת (£11) – החגיגה התחילה ברגל ימין!

ג' הזמין מנה ראשונה מעניינת נוספת – סלט בשר סרטנים (£12) , גם מנה זו היתה קלילה ומתובלת היטב ברוטב חמצמץ ומרענן שנקרא "רוטב האלה הירוק". למי שלא מכיר את הרוטב, מדובר בשילוב מנצח של שמנת חמוצה,בצל ירוק,צלפים,טרגון ומעט מיץ לימון ובדרך כלל גם אנשובי. לדעתי כדאי לציין בתפריט שהרוטב מכיל אנשובי, הרבה אנשים לא נוטים לחבב את הימצאות הדג באוכל שלהם...אבל מי אני שאתווכח עם מפעל הענק שנקרא ג'יימי אוליבר...היה טעים בכל מקרה.

למרכז השולחן הזמנו את פלטת הלחמים המפורסמת של המסעדה(£4) . את כל הלחמים אופים במקום, ובטכניקות מיוחדות להפליא הם יוצרים טעמי לחם באמת שונים וכמובן טעימים ויוצאי דופן יחסית למסעדות אחרות. למשל: לחם שחור, ולא זה שקונים במכולת, אלא לחם שנאפה בתנור פחמים וכך הוא מקבל קראסט שחור על גבול השרוף ובעל טעם חזק שאפילו מצליח להזכיר בירה סטאוט כבדה ועשירה בטעם.

20:15: יש! המנות הראשונות כבר פה! תענוג לראות איך מנות שהן באמת פשוטות, ושניתן לפגוש בהן בהרבה מסעדות כיום, מצליחות לגרום לקריאות התפעלות עם הגעתן לשולחן. המנות מוגשות בצורה מאוד אסתטית ובכמות שלא מביישת לא את הסועד ולא את המחיר.

21:00: המתנה מינימאלית בין ראשונות לעיקריות, תראו מה זה הספקנו להזמין עוד בקבוק יין. אפשר לראות מהתמונות שכל מה שנותר לנו לעשות כרגע הוא לאכול, ולהתענג!

לאהובי היתה פגישה מרגשת עם כתף חזרזיר משוכה (Pulled Pork Shoulder – בסלנג שלנו חזרזיר=חזיר) ברוטב ברבקיו חלפיניו עדין ולחם תירס(£16) . מבחינת המרכיבים המנה יוצרת רושם "גברי" (כתף חזיר! משכו את הכתף ממקומה!! ויש גם חלפיניו וברביקיו!!!) אך למעשה הטעמים השתלבו בצורה טובה ונעימה יחדיו, והבשר פשוט נמס בפה. מעניין גם לציין שבניגוד למה שהייתם מצפים ממסעדת בשר, המנה הזאת (ועיקריות אחרות) לא מגיעה בצורת SLAB OF MEAT אלא מעוצבת כתבשיל איכרים ביתי וארצי (RUSTIC) שמותאם למסעדה שנמצאת במרכז לונדון– כל מה שנותר לעשות בסוף האוכל הוא להרים את לחם התירס ולנגב את הצלחת.

י' הזמינה מנה עיקרית שעל-פניה לא הייתם חושבים שהיא מעניינת במיוחד - סטייק פילה ומח עצם בתוספת של תרד מוקרם ובצלצלי שאלוטס(£35) . הסטייק היה מוכן בדיוק במידה אבל מה שהקפיץ את המנה (או את הסועדת) לשמיים היה מח העצם שהיה עסיסי ומלא טעם בשרי חזק, בדיוק מה שהמנה הזאת היתה צריכה.

21:40: כחלק מהמיקום המדהים של המסעדה, אין ברירה אלא לצאת החוצה לגג ולהתרשם ממראה העיר היפהפייה הזאת על רקע שמי הלילה הבהירים של הקיץ (כן, יש קצת קיץ בלונדון, הוא מגיח לאיזה שבועיים בשנה).

22:00: עייפים אך מרוצים, התקשינו מאוד לוותר על הקינוחים, והזמנו עוגת שוקולד נמסיס(£8) . עוגת מוס שנמסה בפה ומעיפה את כל תחושות האשמה על אכילת השוקולד הצידה. היא לא כבדה מדי, ומיד מבינים שמי שהגה את העוגה הזו עשה זאת במחשבה על חובבי שוקולד מושבעים. השוקולד משובח וכך גם כדור המסקרפונה שעוטר במעט קליפת תפוז, לא יכולנו לבקש יותר. הקפה לא אחר להגיע ועזר לנו לסגור את הארוחה ונתן מעט אנרגיה בכדי לשלם את החשבון ולהצליח לדדות הביתה.

22:30: עייפים, קצת שיכורים אך מרוצים, מביטים בהלם בחשבון ולא מבינים איך זה קרה לנו, אבל לא מתחרטים ולו לרגע. היתה ארוחה נהדרת לשני זוגות שהוכיחה לנו שוב שאדון ג'יימי ושותפו יודעים בדיוק מה הם עושים וגורמים לנו להפיץ את השמועה הלאה אפילו עד לישראל.

בשבוע הבא – בנק הולדיי ודייט סוער עם השף ריק סטיין בקורנוול – נעמוד עם כל המעריצים בתור, שהרי אי אפשר להזמין מקומות מראש...
