For all art lovers, Dell has some good news. The brand has launched its new range of arty laptops that are not your usual types. They are contemporary, bold and to some, even scary. It’s innovation from a new dimension. All you girls out there, if you can’t afford those hi-end arty Apple laptops, here is an option for you.

A new Dell manufacturing technique brings alive every color and brushstroke on the laptop’s cover, creating a fluid, graffiti-inspired tattoo effect that lets style pioneers add another level of individuality to everyday life.

The Inspiron 1525 is up to 25 percent smaller, thinner and almost a half a pound lighter than its predecessor. Consumers on the go will appreciate all of the optional wireless features that help them stay connected, whether it’s at the desk, in a room, around the house or just about anywhere in a wireless network.

Urban Artist Mike Ming has designed five different contemporary Special Art Edition designs for Computer giant Dell. In a bid to appeal to children, or add splash a bit of creativity into the boardroom, Dell has come up with designer names for the Laptops which are in the Studio 15 and 17 ranges.

Childrens GPS Tracker Watch

The GPS tracker watch is designed for children to be worn so that their parents can keep track and know where they are. It might be classed as an invasion of privacy for children, but at the same time it could also protect a child if something unfortunate was to happen.

The watch is named the “lok8u num8″ which I guess is in the txt-msg style that some people use and actually means “locate you” – “new mate”. Pentax K-x Robo Edition Launching

The Pentax K-x is a new camera that was announced just a month ago. The announcement said that it comes in the usual black colour along with white and red options being available. Now we hear that a new version has been launched in a Kore Ja Nai Robo toy set of colours.

The colourful model of camera resembles the toy robot that was first introduced in Japan back in 2001 and aims to be more of a fun entry level digital SLR camera. Other than the fancy colour casing there are no other differences on this camera. [click to continue…]

Nikon D3S Officially Announced

Nikon have made the D3S official now. When launched it will cost just shy of $5,200. With a price tag like that you can expect a very good quality camera. The Nikon D3S is an upgrade to the older D3 model. Nikon have said that it’s the most significant S upgrade they have made.

Inside the new camera has a 12.1 megapixel camera with a full frame CMOS sensor. Also a dust reduction system can be found inside. The camera has an effective ISO of an impressive 102,400.

The camera can capture video also at HD in 720p mode at 24 frames per second. However, it will not capture video at full HD. The camera is being pitched as working well in low light situations with Nikon saying it can capture things your eyes can’t even see. [click to continue…]

Flip Mino HD gets a Revamp

Flip Video have announced a new Flip Mino HD camera that doubles the storage capacity making it possible to store two hours of video, and ads a larger screen that bumps it up from 1.5″ to 2 inches in size.

The whole camera has had a revamp including newer and more responsive touch-sensitive buttons, a more sleeker look and a HDMI output.

The software on the Flip Mino HD has also received an upgrade and now gives the option for users to send footage direct to Facebook. The interface has also received an upgrade and now presents more organised clips for you to search through. Hasselblad are launching their latest camera named the H4D. The H4D is a 60 megapixel camera that uses a true off-centre autofocus system…

…known as True Focus. Where even DSLRs often have to first focus and then reposition the camera to get focus significantly away from the center, the H4D has a yaw rate sensor that can detect the horizontal and vertical movement away from the focus point and refocus the lens to compensate.

Nikon D300 Discontinued

We heard this morning that Nikon are now discontinuing the Nikon D300 digital SLR camera that has been a great camera since it’s launch. The Nikon D300 was recently replaced by the D300s. The D300 was a little behind in these last days in that it couldn’t do video but there are mixed feelings on DSLR’s needing to do video anyway.

The D300 was first launched in August 2007 and now that it’s not being built any more we could see prices dropping on the camera while stocks are finally depleted. iPod Nano with Video Camera – Hands-On

Wired managed to get some time with the new iPod Nano announced yesterday. The new version of the nano now includes a small camera allowing you to capture video. Video on the new nano is captured in standard definition and although we’d all like to see HD captured these days it’s still a decent upgrade and welcomed.

The nano measures 3.6″ tall x 1.5 inches by 0.24 inches, so is very handy to carry around as an MP3 player and have the option of capturing video if needed. Please note that the iPod Nano doesn’t capture still images, or at least, it can’t be done yet. [click to continue…]

Netbook Guide

Welcome to the GadgetVenue Netbook Guide. We have created this guide to help you find the best netbook for your needs. Lets first start by giving an overview of exactly what a netbook is and why they are becoming so popular over this last year.

Netbook – General Details

Netbooks are small, lightweight and generally inexpensive devices that work just like a laptop or desktop PC. Due to their small size they are easy to carry around and very convenient for leisure, work and travel. They generally have screens between 7 and 11 inches with the 10 inch screens being quite popular. Power wise they are not the most powerful of machines and usually run up to an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor. While this is enough to run Windows XP or even Windows 7, it’s not going to allow you to run full detail on a game of Quake III. However, 1.6GHz is ample for most people’s needs and they work excellent for web browsing, email and some basic photo editing. Battery wise they vary and you see some that achieve around 3 hours of usage while others like the Asus Eee 1005HA can achieve an impressive 10+ hours on a single charge.

Due to the small size of netbooks, they tend to not weigh much and usually they vary from 2 – 3 lbs depending on screen and general size. Optical drives are not included on the majority of netbooks to cut down weight and size. If you need to transfer files on to a netbook then the easiest option is just inserting a cheaply available USB flash drive or transferring files over a network.

Netbook Connectivity

All netbooks have wireless networking built in usually at b/g speeds which again, is ample for home usage. Some of the newer models support 802.11n if you really want fast file transfers. Netbooks often have bluetooth connectivity too allowing you to connect a plethora of devices over the air to them. Likewise, a handful of them have built in 3G cards allowing users to sign up to a data-plan and surf the net anywhere you can pick up a mobile phone signal. For this reason, netbooks are very connected to the internet. Other features that sometimes are included are GPS allowing your netbook to work as a decent satellite navigation device.

Netbook Operating Systems and Storage

The majority of netbooks run Windows XP home edition with a few starting to appear with Windows 7 installed that was just released. They normally come with about 1GB of RAM that allows some room for several programs to be loaded. Other operating systems that can be found are Linux (Ubuntu or Suse distributions) and an upcoming netbook supports the Google Android OS with an even further upcoming netbook supporting Google Chrome OS. If you are unsure what Linux, Android or Chrome is then stick to the popular Windows XP or Windows 7 installations as they will be the same as what you have used previously on a desktop or laptop.

Storage wise netbooks either have solid state drives (SSD) that are more rugged due to no moving parts, or hard disk drives (HDD) that is like your home computer (but smaller). The SSD’s tend to be more expensive and have a lot less storage capacity. HDD’s tend to have capacities up to 160GB with a couple going above that.

Netbook Keyboard Size and Screen Size

When choosing a netbook, screen size and keyboard size are very important as they are what you look at and what you type on. If the screen is too small you struggle to see it, and like wise, a smaller screen generally means a smaller netbook and that leads on to a smaller keyboard. But, on the opposite side of the scale you also don’t want to go too big as you might as well choose a laptop. The sweet spot with netbooks tends to be a 10 inch screen and these generally have a keyboard that’s about 92-95% the size of a full size keyboard. A 10 inch screen is easy to see with a good set of eyes and the 92-95% keyboard size is easy to get to grips with.

Netbook Summary

When choosing a netbook it is important to first know what you will be using it for. If it’s going to get light usage and your not familiar with a Linux netbook then choose a Windows XP or Windows 7 netbook. If you want something with a little more kick for graphics then choose something with a dedicated graphics chip.

THE BODY

The basis for every top-level loudspeaker is uncompromising cabinet design. We planned our cabinet to be as stiff as it can get, reducing unwanted vibrations and negative influences on the loudspeaker's sound.

From all the available materials, we've decided to use solid wood for our housings. This is the best choice on account of its superior visual and sound qualities.

We use the most prestigious and high-quality wood of the European and American walnut for the housings of our speakers; this gives our products a mark of eternity. The client must only select, which of the both wood types he would prefer. American walnut is of more even and dense growth, as well as darker color. On the other hand, the wood of the European walnut is more lively and reddish-brown color (it's brighter than the American walnut).

Walnut wood is suitable for exact modeling also, as it is a very beautiful and durable natural material, which is important to us as we strive for superior design and the highest product quality.

For achieving an acoustical basement that will produce high-quality sound, we have been steered mostly by anti-resonant technical know-how. For this reason, Gracioso loudspeaker housings are made by assembling multiple solid-wood horizontal segments that are preliminarily controlled, measured and assembled for optimal self-cancellation of resonances.

The Gracioso loudspeaker has the appearance of a droplet; no parallel planes are inside the cabinet. The inside of the upper and lower surfaces of the cabinet are modeled with special relief treatment. All these factors used in the cabinet design ensure 100% non-resonant and acoustically ideal housing for the speakers.

The Gracioso loudspeaker is completely hand-made; every segment, every detail is modeled and checked. The final product must be examined and approved by Acoustic Preference technical managers.

Waxing was chosen as the finishing method for the wooden surfaces (housing, stand) of the loudspeaker in serial production. The waxing method conserves the natural appearance of the wood as well as keeping it organically correct.

In addition, maintenance of the loudspeaker is easier with the waxing method, since you can easily re-wax your loudspeakers at home. This way, the product will always glow, as new.

With the agreement of the Acoustic Preference team, you also have the choice to use silk polish as the finishing method on the wood instead.

What's more, the design of Gracioso is a favourite among men and women alike. The majority of women chose Gracioso as the product they would most like to have in their living rooms. That is not a negligible fact if we think of all the nice technical equipment our wives have prevented from entering our homes.

THE HEART

The final quality of any product will go only as far as the basic ingredients will allow...
Morel speaker units are well-known and regarded as some of the most technically advanced, innovative and unique designs available. With the benefits of custom-made drivers along with some of our own modification and matching, the choice for us was obvious.

For the lower frequency ranges, we have selected Morel's new high-end drivers, the Uniflow series.

In addition to their well-known features, such as the DPC cone, the Hexatech aluminum voice coil and the high-power handling Hybrid magnet system, the new extremely open Uniflow aluminum basket achieves even better control and astonishing performance in the lower frequency region.

Due to their extremely flat and even frequency, combined with a smooth and extended roll-off, we were able to implement them with straightforward crossover and minimal frequency corrections.

For upper frequency range, we have selected the state-of-the-art 28 mm silk dome Elite series tweeters, made as matched pairs, with triple magnet system and a Hexatech aluminum voice coil. Selected primarily for their smooth and realistic timbre, we have also achieved ideal synergy with mid-bass ranges, due to their extremely low resonant frequency and flat response.

Having already matched speakers individually, we were able to concentrate on quality rather than complexity regarding crossover. After extended tuning, we have selected a crossover assembled from the finest components supplied by the high-end producer, Mundorf.

For inductors, Mundorf's Air Foil Coils, made from 99.999% pure OFC copper with Polypropylene insulation, are used. All the capacitors used along the signal path are high-end audio grade MKP, matched to a tolerance of 0.5%.
Being an equally important part of the design, the crossover module itself was realised on proprietary, optimised non-resonate printed board.

For the most transparent signal flow, internal connections are made entirely with Solid Silver/ Teflon insulated wires that are custom made and braided for us by Homegrownaudio, USA.

Finally, quality WBT bi-wiring terminals are provided for single or bi-wire speaker connections.

The Gracioso 1.0 speaker is a two-way stand mount speaker from Acoustic Preference based in Slovejina EU. That’s right – Slovenia! Acoustic Preference started in 2001 as a manufacturing company and has since created what they say is a top quality speaker that will satisfy the highest demands. According to General Manager Marjan Tancer, "The goal behind the company is, to create acoustic components that combine natural sound and offer great delight when listening to music on every occasion. Acoustic Preference wants to present their clients with durability and a feeling of prestige and excellence.

They started by attempting to create an acoustically inert enclosure through high end materials that are both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing. An enclosure that lacks coloration has consistently been a common theme among great sounding speakers. Merlin speakers use special brass braces, Aerial Acoustics uses heavy internal bracing, Green Mountain Audio uses cast marble, and Wilson Audio uses their X material just to name a few.

About 15 years ago, my fiancé came to visit me in my apartment. She opens the door to find me stirring cement in a 5 gallon bucket with a big stick in the middle of the living room carpet. After some hesitation in the doorway she quips, “What are you doing?”. I look up with the optimistic enthusiasm of a child; “I'm making Speakers!”. She turned and left only coming back after my task was somewhat finished. Even though one of the forms started to lose integrity and slant while curing, the speakers sounded excellent. I have since been a believer in acoustically inert cabinets. When moving to a house, the speakers were too heavy to move and were gutted for their parts even though the lesson lives on.

In order to achieve an acoustically inert cabinet, Acoustic Preference uses many thick pieces of Walnut cut in such a way that the grains criss-cross. They could have used some of the materials above but they wanted to achieve their goals with something natural and beautiful. The multiple walnut segments are preliminary measured, controlled, and assembled for optimal self cancellation of resonances. They are sanded extremely smooth and finished with wax. Additionally, they are able to shape the front with a very large roundover in order to reduce baffle diffraction and enhance imaging.

The cabinets are shaped for the best sonics. The large roundover on the front combined with the sides that taper to the rear look like a teardrop from above. The shape is meant to control internal standing waves and resonances. It also happens to look great. The wood blocks that comprise the sides are perfectly beveled giving them a bit of a nautical look. The materials and workmanship are heirloom quality with a natural sheen that shuns the super shiny speakers we see so often today. Pictures do not do the exquisite craftsmanship of these cabinets justice.

The Gracioso line from Acoustic Preference has optional matching stands that were also delivered for the review. They use the same quality materials and put the tweeter at about 38” high; just right for my listening position.

The stands come with three built in decoupling spikes for the speaker and three more for the base of the stand. The spikes are built such that nothing pointy touches the floor or the speaker; a lucky side effect as the spikes were said to have been chosen for their acoustic properties. Even without real carpet spikes, the stands stood firm and stable on my questionable and problematic listening room carpeting.

Given the high quality cabinet design, they chose to use very high end drivers from Morel. The 6” woofer and matched 28mm silk dome tweeter both come from Morel's Elite series. The large hexatech aluminum voice coils are said to both raise power handling as well as increase the attack of the drivers. Having heard speakers using these drivers and also built some of my own using them, I understand the benefits and characteristics of the drivers and why the cost is so high.

The smooth drivers and high power handling capabilities allowed the Gracioso line to use a simple 12db/octave Linqwitz Riley crossover. The crossovers are comprised of Mundorf air foil coils, and Mundorf high end audio MKP capacitors matched to a very close 0.5% tolerance. These qualities are hallmarks of a very high-end speaker since the parts are top rate and the critical, careful matching takes much time and effort.

The crossover board is treated to be non-resonant and is wired to bi-wire capable WBT connectors through solid teflon insulated silver wire from Homegrownaudio in the USA. How many speakers do you know that employ real silver wires!

Taking the quest for non-resonance further, the circuit boards use extra thick 2x 2,4mm/70 Cu/ Silver reinforced and extra rigid FR-4 board material, additionally dampened with proprietary 10mm thick layer of rubber on the copper side. The crossover components are carefully bolted and glued to the PCB which is then bolted to the enclosure making it virtually a part of the non-resonant enclosure.

The attractive grills are held on with tiny strong magnets but it was clear that listening should be done without the grills. With the grills on, a game of “pin the tail on the tweeter” was all too easy as the speakers no longer disappeared.

Setup

The speakers and stands arrived in larger, heftier boxes than expected. A few quick turns and the so called spikes were installed on the stands. The speakers were placed facing each other connected out of phase for initial breaking in. Further break in occurred in an auxiliary system that serves mostly for background music for another week. The speakers were finally placed in the listening room after about 100 hours of play time but continued to break in throughout the review period.

Getting new speakers to sound right when first placed in a room can sometimes be daunting. That wasn't the case with the Gracioso speakers. They were easy to place as long as I towed them in to avoid sound reflections off the side walls in my small listening room. Out of curiosity, I moved one around, then the other, etc, and each time a constant stable image was still there. The only tweak was getting the distance to the rear and side walls for the best bass and imaging but the best sound in my room was with them nearly four feet out from the back wall and nearly an equilateral triangle with the listening position. The speakers were slightly closer together than they were from the best listening spot. The rear port actually helped augment the bass as the best imaging was found where the best bass was found; just over three feet out from the rear wall.

During this process it was clear that rounding the front baffle to control diffraction of the sound off the face was helping. I could move my head around, bop it side to side, etc, and the sound and image was stable. This is good news as a speaker whose sound changes abruptly as I move my head is a pet peeve of mine. One of my criteria for a good speaker is being able to bob your head around without abrupt changes in the sound.

Most of the listening was using my Hephaestus monoblocks fed by the preamp of a Bryston B100, a Lite Audio DAC AM modified by Pacific Valve, and a Pioneer Elite DV47a CD transport.

A few months back, I had the very distinct displeasure of uncrating Acoustic Preferences flagship Maestoso 2.0 new speakers, the best sounding and the most current hungry speakers (much more on this later) that I have ever had the pleasure of lugging, and I choose my the word lug carefully into my lounge. 'Maestoso’ is an Italian musical term and is much like Marcato, but is used as a directive to play a certain passage of music in a stately, dignified and majestic fashion.’ Thank you Wikipedia

I ought also to tell you something of Slovenia, a country I have had the pleasure of visiting on a number of occasions. Wikipedia again. Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia is a country in Central Europe bordering Italy to the west, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the northeast, and Austria to the north. The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana.

Slovenia has been part of the Roman Empire; partly the Republic of Venice; the principality Carantania (only modern Slovenia's northern part); the Holy Roman Empire; the Habsburg Monarchy; the Austrian Empire (later known as Austria-Hungary); the State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs; the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (renamed to Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929); partly Kingdom of Italy; between the two World Wars occupied by Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Independent State of Croatia (1941–1945); and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1945 until independence in 1991. I can’t recommend a visit to Slovenia highly enough. It is, quite simply, my favorite European nation but I digress. This is after all a speaker review. With the help of an well-charged electric screw driver, a chisel, a pair of scissors and mild damage to a vertebra I care about I was soon able to eviscerate these gorgeous speakers from their immense and immensely sturdy, reinforced plywood crates. Never, ever, have I seen anything better packed.

Still, somehow, I managed to depress the 28mm Morel soft domed tweeter, making a small, ugly depression in its inky blackness. Gratefully, judicious use of the prized Dyson vacuum cleaner returned the tweeter to its proper shape, but I will say I have never held a vacuum cleaner with such care or fear.

Once unpacked, I dragged – the crates weighed a ton too – and placed them on my drive on the way to be stored in the garage. I ought to have placed them in the garage for safe storage but they were heavy and I was very keen to hear what 16,900 Euro of speaker sounded like. I returned to the house in a sweat and hooked the Maestosos with a single pair of banana cables to my basically stock, and reference, 1960 era Leak Stereo 20.

At this point, I ought to mention the speakers not only can be bi-wired, they sport some of the best binding posts I have ever seen, period. While I imagine the speakers would benefit from bi-amping, perhaps with a sweet Audio Note Kit 1 and aNadSilverline on the bottom, I didn’t try. The Audio Note is at a friend’s and I had to return the Silverline to NAD — two errors of judgment that I am not ashamed to admit to.

Then the phone rang.

It was Don, our very good next door neighbor asking if he could have the packing crates. No way José, I said, but by all means come over in about 15 minutes with some of those original Carnegie Hall LPs you showed me last week and one of those nice bottles of wine I know you have laid down for an occasion such as this and we can give these Slovenian grandfather clocks a spin. While Don has a superb record collection, his cellar is even more impressive.

Ten minutes later he was back with an obscure Amarone and a stack of Carnegie Hall LPs with the original cellophane wrappers turned yellow and hard. For those Torontonians of a certain age, you’ll remember the great store they came from, 'Sam the Record Man.’ All that is left of this great institution is the façade.

Small mercies, I suppose.

Then my lovely wife came in and examined the speakers from head to toe going so far as to caress their top surface. Never, ever, have I heard from her what she was about to say. "They’re beautiful. Can we keep them?" Louise has never, ever had anything positive to say about the appearance of hi-fi though she has a very good ear but will only play the piano when I am out. Indeed, she bought for me a cabinet to hide all my hi fi that cost more than my hi-fi at the time. Little did she know, the shelves were the perfect size to store my favorite vinyl and the Garrard 301 had to be placed on top as the plinth was just a little too big. So good looking, and so well finished are the Maestosos that my resident and reference Tannoy D700s now looked like a pair of weird German horns veneered in over lacquered cherry. The Slovenian grandfather clocks, by comparison, would not have looked out of place on Baker Street if Holmes had needed a stereo for those times he felt the need to groove with Watson.

The Hookup
After the swap, checking things twice, and waiting for the Ear834p to warm and the Stereo 20 to settle in, I carefully placed one of Don’s Carnegies on my Garrard 301. Don had let himself in, armed. I dropped the needle (well, placed it delicately on the LP) and, well, um, erm... nothing really that special at all.

My heart sank. This was embarrassing. Arm setup wrong? How do you get a Rega RB350 wrong? Had a tube given up the ghost? They were good yesterday. Had I wired the speakers out of phase? I was pretty careful they weren’t but it wouldn’t be the first time. Was my cartridge shot? That would be expensive. Could speakers really require that much breaking in? Live and learn I suppose. Were original Carnegie Hall recordings nowhere near what they were cracked up to be? Unlikely if my SACD re-masters were anything to go by. Horrible thought, were the speakers damaged in transport? Possible I suppose. Were the speaker jumpers not jumping? A quick check showed the beautiful WBT terminals finger tight with the gold plated jumpers.

Don and I were waiting for big things and they weren’t forthcoming. It was as if Godot had returned in the form of Pee Wee Herman. Fortunately, the lovely wine dulled the pain and the evening was not completely wasted. Not knowing the recordings, not knowing how much breaking in the speakers required, not knowing if they were in fact any good, I really did not know much at all. Indeed, I felt embarrassed in front of my 70 year old neighbor with his early solid state MacIntosh console, big honking Klipsch speakers built into a one piece cabinet that stretched the length of the room and a turntable that was probably on its 7^th Shure.

And while the midrange was nice, the top was all right, there was none of that famous Carnegie acoustic, and no bass to speak of at all. In one word, these speakers were Dullsville. 16,900 Euro of Dullsville in fact. However, as it turned out, the speakers were not to blame. It was the amp. And it only took me to weeks to figure it out. What do other reviewers say, or so I have been told? Synergy, synergy, synergy. In any event, we ended up having a nice evening, but my audiophile pride was a little hurt, and I was, wrongly as it turned out, none too impressed by the speakers.

Now it is a very rare thing to receive bad gear for review and that is one of the reasons that reviews often seem abnormally generous. No. Us fat cat reviewers are not all in the pay of the craven and unethical manufacturers. But we are not Consumer Reports magazine either and we don’t test everything, especially dishwashers. What we test is what the manufacturer offers us and it would be a very foolhardy thing for a manufacturer to offer us something that was not up to snuff. Usually if something sounds bad, something is wrong. Either a manufacturing defect, damage suffered in transport or ancillaries playing silly buggers and that is what happened here.

A little about Acoustic Preference, a name that you might not know. Established in 2001 by music enthusiasts and engineers DavorinŽnuderl and MarjanTancer, they have been in the business of hi fi design for near on two decades and in business only a little less. You may, however, know of their well regarded Bravura amplifiers. It was always their plan to add transducers to their line of amplification with the Maestoso 2.0s being the culmination of that plan.

It came to me in a dream, a coupe de foudre no less of which Benjamin Franklin would be proud. These speakers wanted current, lots of it, an arc welder’s worth in fact, and my all time favorite amplifier my beloved Leak Stereo 20 simply wasn’t up to the task. This was not particularly surprising when you think of it actually. These speakers were built with the best design and materials that 2009 has to offer, while my dear old 10 watt a side amplifier was perhaps the best that the early sixties had to offer and of course speaker design was quite a bit different then too. In any event, I exaggerate. These speakers merely needed more current than I presently had and sound just fine with any 50 watt or so solid state amplifier with a stiff power supply. I tried. The amp, as I found, was always the limiting factor with these speakers.

Amplifier Swap
Fortunately, I just happened to have a Chinese built Krell-alike five-channel home theatre integrated amplifier in the basement that might do the trick. It did. Rated at a 100 watts a channel with the heat-sinks to prove it, I hurt another vertebra dragging it up the stairs and placing it on the aforementioned hi fi cabinet which thrilled Louise to no end. Like the old Nads of old, the designers had separated the pre-amp side from the power amp side so I pulled the jumpers and fed the truly wonderful Benchmark DAC directly into the power amp side. I used a Sim Audio passive switchbox for analog, switching between a Revox Tuner, a Garrard 301 'table, and an SACD player. For digital, I used my new Squeezebox Duet.

measurements

All measurements were taken in a semi treated room using a Smith and Larson Audio WooferTester Pro. The speakers were 1 meter away and on the tweeter axis for the frequency response, impulse, and CSD plots. They measured much better without the grills which was in line with what we heard so all measurements were done with the grills off. A protractor and laser level were used to ensure the measurement angles were precise. The response plots were performed on a 10db scale in order to be in line with what is typically done in the industry.

In Summary, the speakers measured fairly well. There were no obvious frequency response issues other than the limited low end bass and a small dip around 4.5Khz. One thing to note is that I also do a test where I just move the microphone around and watch the response for major fluctuations. The Gracioso's performed very well here with the on and off axis response smoothly changing with no abrupt aberrations. I found that speakers that perform this way tend to have a more natural sense to them, image better, and are easier to place.

The on axis frequency response and phase show a relatively neutral speaker. The dip around 100Hz is a function of the room. I later took the speakers outside to measure and the dip was gone. I wanted to be sure. There was one small flaw here that nobody picked up on which is a dip around 4.5Khz. Note how the phase has a little glitch around that same spot. This could be improved with some better woofer to tweeter integration yet it may be part of why people found them so easy to listen to. The phase is pretty linear and looks typical of a second order system.

At 15 degrees off axis, the response is nearly identical with only minor variations and a slight drop off starting around 5Khz. Off axis is in yellow.

At 30 degrees off axis, the shape of the response is relatively in tact with just a larger drop off on the top end starting around 5Khz and a tiny blip around 2Khz. The on and off axis response matching so closely is one of the reasons these speakers image so well.

At 45 degrees off axis, we have more of the same but with more of a roll off starting at 5Khz and the small narrow dip around 4.5Khz has actually improved so a smoother response. The decent off axis response helped add to the sense of ambiance these speakers produced in my small but relatively dead sounding listening room. It also helps explain why I had to toe them in.

At 60 degrees off axis, the response is seemingly smoother than the on axis response but still keeps much of the original frequency response characteristic.

The impulse response shows that these speakers are not wired in phase and start and stop very quickly. The blip around 3ms into the impulse response is likely a reflection off the floor. A perfect impulse response would be a line straight up and then straight back down to where it started.

The step response looks good except that for the tweeter and woofer being out of phase. A perfect step response should look like a slightly concave right rectangle triangle and can give insights into the time alignment of a speaker. Other than the tweeter being electrically out of phase, the step response looks rather nice.

The CSD plot was taken with the window just wide enough to avoid that large impulse response blip shown earlier which is likely a reflection off of the floor or ceiling. The CSD plot shows no obvious problems like driver ringing or box coloration.

The impedance of the speaker can be considered 8 ohms with only minor lows approaching 7 ohms at 45Hz and 6 ohms at 200Hz. There is a slight rise around 1Khz that might make for a more forward sounding midrange on tube amplifiers but the effect is likely to be subtle as it's only a slight rise. The published sensitivity rating is only 88 dB so low watt SET amps are probably not ideal, but the more than decent impedance curve will be a relatively easy load for any amp to push.

So How Do They Sound?

Sitting down to listen immediately reminded me of the Merlin TSM speakers. There was just something about them that was similar enough that the Merlin speakers popped into my mind. They both share a sense of energy and attack combined with a smooth frequency response balance in addition to properly tuned neutral bass.

Further investigation revealed that the drivers all come from the same company, have similar crossover points and topologies, and both have rather inert cabinets. The Gracioso 1.0 speakers likely have an edge here with a more rounded front baffle and use the Elite series Morel drivers which is theoretically a step up.

The Gracioso's do not wow the listener at first, but continually captivate the listener garnering more favor as time passes. Several veteran audiophile friends came over during the review period and each was quiet until after about three or so songs - very unusual behavior. Usually they will offer and opinion or comment right away, but these speakers have a way of captivating you and drawing you in, but not because of gimmicky, hyper-audiophile qualities. There is no initial "wow" factor like the first time you see the Las Vegas strip. They are exceedingly smooth, have surprisingly good bass for a 6.5” woofer, and have a very open and natural sound. The music is able to come through in a clean powerful moving manner. This is the kind of speaker that one could own and listen to for a long time.

Just a tip, if a speakers “wows” you right away, do not purchase it until you have had a chance to listen for extended periods, perhaps as long as your longest listening session is likely to be. More often than not, a speaker that gives you that wow factor will become fatiguing after 30 minutes or so. You ears won’t feel tired and your eyes might not be dripping blood, but you will just feel like you don’t want to listen anymore and go do something else. That’s ear fatigue. You should be able to listen for hours without the feeling that you’d rather be walking the dog or mowing the lawn…

Imaging

The Acoustic Preference Gracioso 1.0 speakers image fabulously, likely their strongest area of many very strong areas of performance. I am a sucker for speakers that can present a realistic soundstage and take me into the performance. If a speaker cannot do this, I will dismiss it.

Instruments are easily placed within the soundfield as well as off stage. This review overlapped with a review of my Hephas (Hephaestus Audio class D monoblocks) as well as an upcoming review of the a Xindak tube preamp. The difference in soundstage depth between the Bryston 2B SST and the Hephas was very easy to hear. This is an indicator that the speakers will likely not be the limiting factor for imaging. Furthermore, the difference between the preamp section of the Bryston B100 SST and the Xindak tube preamp was also quite clear. I will leave most differences for the review but one preamp would flatten the soundstage to the point where one could not hear the true abilities of the speakers. This emphasizes the concept that people should start with the best speakers possible that work with their room and only then find electronics that match them well. It also illustrates how revealing the Gracioso's are.

This is a quote from my review of the Hephas but since it was also playing through the Gracioso speakers, it fits here too. Melody Gardot's, “Worrisome Heart” sounded impressive. The air and sense of space from the recording was rendered beautifully. The vibrato in her voice was more noticeable than I have noticed as well as the breaths she took in between the verses. In “All That I Need Is Love” on the same album, the notes in her voice rise up and down with lots of emotion. Through the Hephas, the speedy rise in her voice is captured perfectly preserving the feeling of the recording. One could easily make out the drums being hit with brushes and the cymbals sounded just right. Melody Gardot was placed up front and center with the instruments and drums clearly giving her the stage. When I came back to listen and double check my notes, I found myself just sitting and listening through half the album when I should have been joining my family for dinner. It took a three foot tall person with a big smile to come in and pull me away from it. Just the opposite of the “wow” factor above.

Bass from a 6.5” Woofer?

Once correctly set up in the room, the speakers provided surprisingly strong and accurate bass for a 6.5” woofer.

Can They Rock?

While listening to the aforementioned “Five Peace Band” recording I noticed that both of my reference speakers would start to compress at the high levels I would play this release at. The monitors use a 5” SEAS metal cone woofer and a SEAS 27TDFC tweeter with a second order crossover and notch filter. The full range speakers are an open baffle three way speaker using GR Research woofers and a B&G planar ribbon tweeter. The Gracioso 1.0 speakers were more free from compression in the treble than either of these speakers and the Gracioso's Elite series Morel woofer outperformed the smaller SEAS metal cone woofer which would start to bottom a little earlier.

The last time I heard the Merlin speakers, Bobby Palkovic played “Postcards From Paraguay” from Mark Knopfler's Shangri La on CD. I remember how accurate his VSM's were and how well it reproduced Mark Knopfler's vibrato when he sang “From Paraguay” later in the song. Remembering how the Gracioso's reminded me of the TSM's, I had to listen to this CD and it was reproduced as good if not better albeit less deep. It was both very accurate and very enjoyable. Later I found my wife listening to this CD when I got home from work and she commented on how well the air was reproduced and how well “Boom, Like That” rocked with a sense of power and funk.

I've been enjoying another CD lately that seems to cross the borders between jazz and rock. “Catching Takes” from Jamie Cullum on CD straddles the lines between audiophile music and fun music to which the rest of us listen. It's relatively well recorded with good bass and seemingly uncompressed, but the highs are always a little edgy. Either way, the music is entertaining.

Once I was listening to this CD and decided to shower before my wife and kids got home. The listening room is on a different floor so I left the music playing at a moderately high level. I still couldn't hear it over the shower and forgot that it was playing. While I was in the shower there were all sorts of bumps and thumps as if my family had come home and my young boys were rough-housing inside the house. I hurried my shower in an effort to put a stop to the wrestling. When I got out, I realized I was still alone and it was hard-hitting, accurate bass from the Gracioso's and Jamie Cullum.

Classical

The Acoustic Preference Gracioso's are very much at home playing classical music. Many speakers are not designed well enough to be able to do such divergent genres as rock and classical equally as adroitly. These image great placing instruments where they should be but also have a huge sense of detail without being in your face or annoying. The excellent midrange will be a plus to those who want to clearly hear the difference between a violin and a viola for example. Hmm. Earlier I said that imaging may be the Gracioso's strongest quality, but perhaps it's the midrange. I think I have to say this is the best midrange I have had the privilege of hearing in my home. Again, this speaker's qualities sneak up on you and seduce you. There's an addictive quality that's almost spooky. I actually found myself thinking about them at work and looking forward to spending time with them later that night.

Joshua Bell's “Violin Favourites & Virtuoso Showpieces” gets a lot of play in our home. It's mostly violin accompanied by a piano in the background and highlights involving music from Kreisler, Brahms, Paganini, Sarasate, and Wieniawski. The music was faithfully reproduced and quite enjoyable through the Gracioso's I was listening to “Liebesfreud” and “Liebesleid” from the second CD in the set and noticed something I had never heard before; somebody taking deep breaths here and there in the recording. I had never heard that before but once I did, it wasn't all that subtle.

Hearing new things in a recording can mean either good or bad things. In this case it was a good thing as it was just a function of the high resolution nature of the speakers. In some cases, people hear new things because the frequency in that range is emphasized and unnatural but these speakers are smooth enough to not be the case here.

I've been enjoying the Delos recordings a lot the past few years. It's a great way to find new music that you may like and they usually sound great. I plopped “Second Stage”, “The Symphonic Sound Stage, Vol 2” into my transport for both enjoyment and testing purposes.

One of the songs I always have to pay attention through is “Fireworks” by Stravinsky. The sense of space and placement of instruments was first rate as was the attack when the music would burst into energy from near silence. These speaker was able to reproduce the full scale orchestra even catching much of the bottom end of the spectrum. It wasn't the same as a true full range speaker and lacked the ultimate authority that a huge speaker or a subwoofer would provide yet it did a surprisingly good job considering it's size. I can't think of a speaker this size that could outperform these in terms of bass.

Childless couples often enjoy dining in restaurants, but once they are parents, many people fear that pleasurable restaurant meals may be a thing of the past. While romantic dinners for two may be hard to come by, family meals in restaurants can be fun and relaxing, as long as parents plan ahead a bit.

Practice beforehand: Playing pretend games helps preschoolers to understand what they may encounter in new situations, and restaurant visits are no exception. Parents can help to prepare their little ones by engaging them in imaginative games of "restaurant" at home, taking turns being the customer, server, and cook. Everyone should use their best manners during these practice sessions!
Let them know your expectations: Talking to kids about appropriate behavior will help them to know how to conduct themselves in restaurants. Explain that they must stay at the table and not disturb other diners with loud or boisterous activity. While you can't expect perfect table manners from young children, common courtesy is a reasonable goal.
Choose the restaurant carefully: Toddlers and preschool-aged children cannot be expected to sit quietly for extended periods of time, so parents are wise to choose family-friendly restaurants for enjoyable meals. Places that offer booster seats, quiet table games or crayons and coloring book style placemats are best for families with young children.
Allow them to have their favorite foods: Preschoolers are notoriously picky eaters, so allowing them to select familiar favorites such as chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, or hot dogs can make them more inclined to be happy diners. Many families enjoy buffets since the wide selection of foods usually means that there is something available to please every family member. Parents should never allow young kids to serve themselves at a buffet table, though. Not only can trays of hot food be dangerous for children, but also little ones' tendencies to grab things with their hands can be distasteful to other diners.
Try to make the kids comfortable: If yourhild has a favorite sippy cup, by all means bring it along to the restaurant. In time they will learn to use traditional glassware, but until then, avoiding unnecessary spills can make the visit less stressful for everyone.
Visit during off-peak times: Small kids aren't the most patient people, so scheduling your meal before the dinner rush is wise. There is usually less of a wait time for meals when the cooks and servers aren't swamped with customer orders.
Finally, relax! The first few visits may not go well, but with patience and practice, even young children can develop into polite and pleasant restaurant companions!

Today's families eat many of their meals away from home, so teaching kids to be thoughtful dining partners is important. There are few things more appealing than happy, well-mannered children, so parents who take the time to teach their kids to enjoy restaurant outings while being considerate of other diners are sure to enjoy the much-deserved appreciation of the restaurant staff and fellow patrons alike.

Sopečné plyny jsou jedním z produktů vulkanismu. Tvoří je směsice pro člověka převážně jedovatých horkých plynů, které vznikají uvolňováním z roztaveného magmatu při jeho výstupu k povrchu, či v některých případech i interakcí podzemní vody s magmatem. Pokud se magma dostane na povrch, stává se lávou a sopečné plyny volně přecházejí do atmosféry, kde se stávají významnými skleníkovými plyny.

Sopečné plyny jsou tvořeny převážně vodní párou jakožto základní složkou všech plynů produkovaných vulkanickou aktivitou. Mezi další plyny patři různé oxidy síry (např. oxid siřičitý), fluorovodík, chlorovodík, oxid uhelnatý, metan, tetrafluorosilan, amoniak, oxid uhličitý a mnoho dalších jako např. karbonylsulfid či radon. Většina těchto plynů je pro život nebezpečná a při jejich uvolňování hrozí zasaženému jedinci smrt. Nebezpečí představuje skutečnost, že velké množství sopečných plynů je těžší než vzduch a často se tedy drží v nižších oblastech, kde vyplňují deprese či tečou údolími. Některé z nich, jako například oxid uhličitý, jsou současně i bez zápachu a bezbarvé, takže nejsou člověkem rozpoznatelné. Občas se stává, že jejich výskyt dosahuje jen určité výšky – jako se stalo např. při erupci sopky Hekla v roce 1974, kdy plyny zabíjely zvířata jen do výšky 1 metru nad zemí, člověku tedy nehrozilo nebezpečí.

The Ruff is a medium-sized wader that breeds on marshes and wet meadows across northern Eurasia. This highly gregarious sandpiper is migratory, and sometimes forms huge flocks in its winter grounds, which include southern and western Europe, Africa, southern Asia and Australia. It is usually considered to be the only member of its genus, and the Broad-billed and Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are its closest relatives. The Ruff is a long-necked, pot-bellied bird. This species shows marked sexual dimorphism; the male is much larger than the female, and has a breeding plumage that includes brightly coloured head tufts, bare orange facial skin, extensive black on the breast, and the large collar of ornamental feathers that inspired this bird's English name. The female has one brood per year and lays four eggs in a well-hidden ground nest, incubating the eggs and rearing the chicks, which are mobile soon after hatching, on her own. The Ruff forages in wet grassland and soft mud, probing or searching by sight for edible items. It primarily feeds on insects, especially in the breeding season, but it will consume plant material, including rice and maize, on migration and in winter. Classified as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List criteria, the global conservation concerns are relatively low because of the large numbers that breed in Scandinavia and the Arctic. (more...)

A trade fair (trade show or expo) is an exhibition organized so that companies in a specific industry can showcase and demonstrate their latest products, service, study activities of rivals and examine recent trends and opportunities. Some trade fairs are open to the public, while others can only be attended by company representatives (members of the trade) and members of the press, therefore trade shows are classified as either "Public" or "Trade Only". They are held on a continuing basis in virtually all markets and normally attract companies from around the globe. For example, in the U.S. there are currently over 2500 trade shows held every year, and several online directories have been established to help organizers, attendees, and marketers identify appropriate events.

Trade fairs often involve a considerable marketing investment by participating companies. Costs include space rental, design and construction of trade show displays, telecommunications and networking, travel, accommodations, and promotional literature and items to give to attendees. In addition, costs are incurred at the show for services such as electrical, booth cleaning, internet services, and drayage (also known as material handling).

Consequently, cities often promote trade shows as a means of economic development.

Exhibitors attending the event are required to use an exhibitor manual or online exhibitor manual to order their required services and complete any necessary paperwork such as health and safety declarations.

An increasing number of trade fairs are happening online, and these events are called virtual tradeshows. They are increasing in popularity due to their relatively low cost and because there is no need to travel whether you are attending or exhibiting.

Finance is the science of funds management.^[1] The general areas of finance are business finance, personal finance, and public finance.^[2] Finance includes saving money and often includes lending money. The field of finance deals with the concepts of time, money and risk and how they are interrelated. It also deals with how money is spent and budgeted.

Finance works most basically through individuals and business organizations depositing money in a bank. The bank then lends the money out to other individuals or corporations for consumption or investment, and charges interest on the loans.

Loans have become increasingly packaged for resale, meaning that an investor buys the loan (debt) from a bank or directly from a corporation. Bonds are debt sold directly to investors from corporations, while that investor can then hold the debt and collect the interest or sell the debt on a secondary market. Banks are the main facilitators of funding through the provision of credit, although private equity, mutual funds, hedge funds, and other organizations have become important as they invest in various forms of debt. Financial assets, known as investments, are financially managed with careful attention to financial risk management to control financial risk. Financial instruments allow many forms of securitized assets to be traded on securities exchanges such as stock exchanges, including debt such as bonds as well as equity in publicly-traded corporations.^{[dubious – discuss]}

Central banks act as lenders of last resort and control the money supply, which affects the interest rates charged. As money supply increases, interest rates decrease.^[3]

An entity whose income exceeds their expenditure can lend or invest the excess income. On the other hand, an entity whose income is less than its expenditure can raise capital by borrowing or selling equity claims, decreasing its expenses, or increasing its income. A specific example of corporate finance is the sale of stock by a company to institutional investors like investment banks, who in turn generally sell it to the public. The stock gives whoever owns it part ownership in that company. If you buy one share of XYZ Inc, and they have 100 shares outstanding (held by investors), you are 1/100 owner of that company. Of course, in return for the stock, the company receives cash, which it uses to expand its business; this process is known as "equity financing". Equity financing mixed with the sale of bonds (or any other debt financing) is called the company's capital structure.

Finance is used by individuals (personal finance), by governments (public finance), by businesses (corporate finance), as well as by a wide variety of organizations including schools and non-profit organizations. In general, the goals of each of the above activities are achieved through the use of appropriate financial instruments and methodologies, with consideration to their institutional setting.

Finance is one of the most important aspects of business management. Without proper financial planning a new enterprise is unlikely to be successful. Managing money (a liquid asset) is essential to ensure a secure future, both for the individual and an organization.

Managerial or corporate finance is the task of providing the funds for a corporation's activities. For small business, this is referred to as SME finance. It generally involves balancing risk and profitability, while attempting to maximize an entity's wealth and the value of its stock.

Long term funds are provided by ownership equity and long-term credit, often in the form of bonds. The balance between these forms the company's capital structure. Short-term funding or working capital is mostly provided by banks extending a line of credit.

Another business decision concerning finance is investment, or fund management. An investment is an acquisition of an asset in the hope that it will maintain or increase its value. In investment management – in choosing a portfolio – one has to decide what, how much and when to invest. To do this, a company must:

Identify relevant objectives and constraints: institution or individual goals, time horizon, risk aversion and tax considerations;
Identify the appropriate strategy: active v. passive – hedging strategy
Measure the portfolio performance

Financial management is duplicate with the financial function of the Accounting profession. However, financial accounting is more concerned with the reporting of historical financial information, while the financial decision is directed toward the future of the firm.

Budget is a document which documents the plan of the business. This may include the objective of business, targets set, and results in financial terms, e.g., the target set for sale, resulting cost, growth, required investment to achieve the planned sales, and financing source for the investment. Also budget may be long term or short term. Long term budgets have a time horizon of 5–10 years giving a vision to the company; short term is an annual budget which is drawn to control and operate in that particular year.
