The Segway has existed for over a decade and enjoyed a gradual rise to fame, having appeared in all manner of movies and TV shows. And now that the police use them to patrol the streets and Segway city tours are common place around the world, the Segway and its Kamen’s balancing technology is rapidly rising in everyday use from electronic mobility aid to off-roading and rapid response security.

Perhaps it’s the $3,000 price tag that’s holding the Segway back? But when compared to other light motor vehicles like quad bikes and mobility scooters, this seems the norm.

Maybe it’s the unusual nature of its design, control and the advanced science that maintains balance that provides the barrier to entry?

Or perhaps it’s simply because most people have never had the chance to actually ride one?

Segway Riding

I recently received a Segway experience as a gift for my 30th Birthday. Like most people, I knew what a Segway was, but had no desire to ride one, let alone a basic knowledge of how they even work. But that changed very quickly…

Direction and speed is controlled by leaning and turning your body. The further you lean forward, the faster it goes. Lean back and it reverses. Shift your bodyweight (while holding on to the handle bars) and the Segway turns slowly on the spot or steers.

But what’s actually happening is that various gyroscopic and fluid based levelling sensors attached to two computers within the Segway quickly analyse your weight and height while stationary and then use these sensors to detect the shift in weight and respond accordingly by changing speed and direction. Meanwhile the electric motors and can go up to 20 kmph, slightly faster than the average person’s sprinting speed.

While Segway speeds are usually limited, the ones used for off road rallies aren’t. So body armour and BMX crash helmets are essential for riding safely at speed.

Physically, riding a Segway at slow speeds is surprisingly comfortable, because you only need to stand straight and lean forward gently. Riding at speed uses more energy due to the shift in weight required to steer the Segway at speed while maintaining balance – even though the Segway does this for you using its many gyroscopes and sensors.

However, whether travelling at speed or at a gradual pace, the Segway feels amazingly smooth on flat tarmac and pavements to sloping woodland tracks. And it’s all because of the gyroscope that maintains balance and control.

Segway Legal Restrictions

Would I personally consider buying one over a quad bike or BMX?

Definitely when the ride is so comfortable and it’s electrically powered, rather than petrol powered. However, the legal restrictions make Segway ownership problematic.

Here in the UK the Segway is classified as a powered vehicle and subject to Road Traffic law. However, because it doesn’t meet the required safety standards, it is illegal on both roads and footpaths.

This is because riders are too exposed to mix with general traffic on a road, while being too fast, heavy and dangerous to other users on footpaths or cycle paths.

So the only place you can ride a Segway is on private property. And the same law applies in many other countries. Although there seem to be some exceptions where police are allowed to ride them, while tourists are allowed to hire them or ride them for city tours within certain designated areas.

The Rise of the Segway?

While the Segway has gradually grown in popularity over the years, its use remains restricted, although this hasn’t stopped Segway off road racing, Segway city tours and the Segway becoming a mode of mobilisation for security and police around the world.

The growing popularity of the Segway seems to help various governments lift bans or restrictions on where it can be ridden. And with every ban that’s lifted, its popularity and general use becomes increasingly widespread.

Perhaps it won’t be long until we’re all riding one to work after all?

World Wildlife Fund Study Results

According to a report commissioned by the WWF, the world’s most dangerous seas include the South China Sea, the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Sea. These parts of the ocean are high-risk spots for shipping accidents, which in turn pose a huge threat to the health of the environment and humans alike. The North Sea and the British Isles are also hotspots for cargo incidents. Apart from the cost to the ship owners and loss of cargo, these particular oceans are also home to a diverse array of ocean life, which become threatened when accidents occur.

South China Sea

WWF Study Statistics

• Since 1999, there have been 293 shipping accidents in the South China Sea and East Indies.

• Over the past 15 years, the number of ships travelling the globe has increased from 85 000 to 105 000.

• The shipping process delivers over 90% of the world’s trade items.

• General cargo ships account for 50% of ships lost/wrecked at sea, whilst fishing vessels make up 25%.

• 50% of ship accidents are caused by foundering in rough weather, sinking due to leakage, and breaking in two.

• The Coral Triangle, located in the South China Sea, is home to 76% of the world’s corals, and around 120 million people depend on the area for their food and livelihoods.

• Risk factors for shipping include the use of vessels over ten years old, in addition to poorly performing flag states.

• The extent of a potential environmental disaster is dependent upon the type of cargo being transported. In 2002, the sinking Prestige oil tanker released over 70 000 tons of oil into the ocean, causing significant environmental damage and economic losses.

What Can Be Done?

The study, undertaken by scientists at Southampton Solent University, was released on the 8th June, which is World Ocean’s Day. WWF notes that with increasing ocean traffic and the effects of climate change, shipping accidents are likely to increase. The organisation recommends greater environmental regulation by governments, both at a local and international level. Furthermore, the WWF has called for shipping agencies to assume greater responsibility for their operations, in order to mitigate their risk of shipping accidents.

Marine manager at WWF, Simon Walmsley, says that “We really want to see the shipping industry promote greater owner and operator responsibility and encourage owners to register with better flag states, the country which a vessel is registered to. Additionally, irresponsible and badly performing owners and countries need to be exposed in order to motivate them to significantly increase their standards”. Walmsley also noted that the industry needs to become much more proactive; too often, regulation only occurs after a devastating accident has taken place.

Future Forward Thinking

However, if we are to truly preserve the diversity of our marine life, then we need to look further than the shipping industry. There need to be increased efforts to tackle water pollution, better regulation of the fishing industry, and greater efforts to combat the effects of climate change. The health of our planet is in our hands.

An Epic Challenge

The 5th Peking to Paris Motor Challenge is currently in progress, with 96 vintage vehicles taking part in the race. The month-long expedition kicked-off on 28th May, and will finish in Paris by 29th June.

Peking is the original name for Beijing, and contestants will travel through China, across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, and along Russian back roads. They will also traverse the Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria and Switzerland, before arriving in Paris. All in all, they will cover around 15 000 km.

Back in Time

The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge commemorates a car race that took place in 1907, after a French newspaper, Le Matin, wrote on the 31st of January that year: “What needs to be proved today is that as long as a man has a car, he can do anything and go anywhere. Is there anyone who will undertake to travel this summer from Peking to Paris by automobile?”

There were originally 40 entrants, but only five ended up shipping their vehicles to Peking. Prince Scipione Borghese, an Italian, won the race in his seven litre engine, and received a magnum of Mumm champagne for his efforts.

Teams consist of pairs, ranging from spouses, to siblings, and parent-child combinations. Entrants come from 26 different countries. According to the Endurance Rally Association, this race is “The longest and toughest challenge anyone can drive in a vintage or classic car, an extraordinary adventure driving through some of the remotest places on earth”. The drivers cover several hundred kilometres each day. Some are competing simply for the joy of it, whilst others are driving for charitable causes – among them environmental conservation and brain research.

The ERA website is updated daily with competitor rankings and rally reports on the day’s race. Currently, in the Vintageant category (pre-1941 models), Phil Garrat and Kieron Brown lead the pack with their Chevrolet Fangio Coupe. In the Classic category, meanwhile (pre-1975 models), Gerry Crown and Matt Bryson are in first place driving their Leyland P76.

The Next Event

Planning for the 6th Peking to Paris Motor Challenge is already in the works, and will take place in 2016. This edition of the race will traverse some of the highest mountain roads in the world, and journey across Tibet, the foot of Mount Everest, Nepal, Kathmandu and the foothills of the Himalayas.

It’s certainly great to see these vintage beauties still getting out onto the open road after all these years!

Apple TV, Making Life Simpler

A product that raises eyebrows to those who haven't heard about it is the Apple TV. "Does it really do all that?" some may ask. No need to blame them, it is just that nothing like the Apple TV existed before. Not only does it allow the user the broadcast their own video files and photos to their TV, but gives them access to AirPlay, possibly the greatest gift to entertainment since humankind began clacking two rocks together. AirPlay allows the user to access content like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO GO all in 1080p resolution. Sometimes mighty good things come in a small package.

While these innovations are great and industry defining, in a year Mac will have another product that we couldn't live with before. Beyond the quality products, what sets Apple aside is that their innovation will endure, and the excellent products they sell now will always get better while always being so intuitive, a child could use it.
