Valley of The Bones

Yes, this took over a day to create but then again at the very least I am painting every day. Yeah! Kids off to camp and science competitions and I get to paint! I have been studying the old west, old bones and in the process finding dried up paint tubes with many cracks and crevasses that fascinate me. What lives in there, how deep does it go? Does anything ever emerge? Ezekiel suggests that there is life. You will find expressive nature in most of my work. The cracked pot I did this time last year is reminiscent of this one as is the roof tiles in Marilyn Go Round. Maybe something is emerging……

On my easel is a painting for an upcoming show at the Vault Gallery in Culver City, CA. I have taken it upon myself to do a series of paintings that incorporate the life of celebrities and what my interpretation of their lives might have been like behind the scene. It is always fascinating for me to study my subject in depth before I begin. It helps me understand the emotional view, how one is uniquely designed. As I paint, it gives me time to celebrate the person and their amazing feats. We all have many failures but it’s the feats I want to emerge. My collection of vintage inspired mixed media and all the other pieces I am producing for a summer showing are titled “Emergence”! Its time to begin a new! It’s show time!

Worthy

It’s been a while since I have posted to my blog. I have been painting but I am working on some new pieces for upcoming gallery showing. Hope to show you soon! I am so excited. On the other hand, this painting duo was inspired by a literary writer friend of mine. It is two canvases that can stand alone or pair together. I have been using lots of green and Prussian blue in my art lately; not a reflection of how I am feeling, just a moment in time of exploring color theory. I am wondering if this might lend itself to two more paintings of different sizes attached to it somehow of others looking on and wondering just why the women is unworthy and yet saved.

Half Glass

I am working on this piece that conveys that the glass is half full or empty. The fullness is what escapes me and the emptiness is what eludes me. Will I drink before I am eaten? Will I fly before I am drowned? Is your glass half empty or full? You be the judge.

Something New: Final Days

This is what is on my table today. I am finishing the edging and its something new for me to be adding stitching to my artwork. I am thrilled to be learning a new skill and at the same time I am trying not to pull my hair or thread out before I finish. I hope to have a whole series for you as I am in the process of putting the petal to the ceramic (tile) that is.....What do you see in this? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Cherry Pickin

Summer cherry pickin is over but alas I have found time to post some art I did this summer. I guess the timing was right as I just read in my studies that a town in modern day Turkey, (formally the biblical town of Colossae) was known for its purple dye from a flower, a Cyclamen_purpurascen. The purple of royalty gives way to the red shed for you and me. I just always loved the shape, color and size and that super fruit that cures what ails you. Sweet.

What do I know about golf? ummm. I took a class once. I am married to a golfer and oh.....the ball really hurts if hit by one....the ball travels well in snake holes and I illustrated a book about golf with camels, double decker buses and donkeys! Well here is my rendition...

Thistles in Time

My last few weeks in the 109 degree heat have finally come to a "Thistle" stop as I sit in the comfort of the AC sipping a cup of iced water resting my shoulders for a bit. This project was a fun exciting time. We did the project in the heat of summer however early and with misters we hooked up to our fans. We made it. I am happy with the results and I hope you find it a piece of inspiration for your outdoors. Can you picture lounging by the pool under the shade of the thistles with a cool drink looking upward then drifting off into a restful doze dreaming of southwest beauty, organic and paths un-chartered. This was definitely a charter I unearthed and would do again!

A recent commission allowed me to get back to earthly colors and a stroll through my stencil stash. Fun to dabble in the unrealistic. Another triptych is on my easel now and happens to be totally unrelated to anything I have done before...stay tuned....I am waiting on my sewing machine to get fixed as I broke it on the first piece of a new triptych. The one featured above was designed to coordinate with an area rug and the colors in the living room.

Working on a piece that incorporates a vision statement for a family. It has been a real joy to do and words are steadfast and forever.......I will post the entire piece when finished. I am using cheese cloth, fabric, paint, plaster and paper. Kind of represents that we are all these things weathered and tattered by storms of life but the words are still there.

This peice was painted for a dear friend that is embarking on a new season. I like to remember the short time we have known each other as we walked amongst the birch trees and used these colors to decorate their lovely home. Blessings to the voyage and new memories.

Waiting on spring as it is the coldest winter on record in some parts of the country, I dream of sitting in a chair, old, rustic, familiar and looking out at the birth of new growth, new springing forth, new creation...its coming! Can you feel it?

Waiting for Spring

What are you waiting for? Its a New Year and I have found lots of waiting time as I paint. I am waiting on new work, new jobs, new inspiration, a new car?! But as I digress, really, I truly wait for direction as to the will for my life. This painting is one in a series I am working on to go with the "Stable" I did last month. Scroll down if you missed it. This oil is more about detail in the fashion of realism and very time consuming compared to some other styles; nevertheless, there is something about going slow and reflecting and enjoying the wait...for the end result. The Gift

I am reminded this Christmas season that our greatest gift to humanity is Himself. I took on this challenge to paint what was on my heart for the advent leading up to the eve of His birth. What I found was so much more in the way that the tree was here since the beginning of time, the apples not falling far from the tree, the manger being made of wood canopied by the tree roots and the foreshadow of yet another purpose for wood. I stall as I may have said too much; I hope you the viewer get out of it what you see. Its a gift from Him, through me to you.

What's in Your Yard?

Funny how you set out over a year ago to paint once a day of which I might add can be a challenge when you are a mother of two, wife and involved in many activities outside of trying to make a living as a starving artist. I find myself interrupted throughout the day with the ordinary of life. So it is that my husband, in his infinite wisdom says, why don't you paint a Nativity. Mind you it’s only 3 days before Christmas. I say, ok, and since I have so little time each day, I add one piece to the most amazing Gift God gave us this day over 2000 years ago. I am in awe as I paint realizing that all I can give is much like the drummer boy, my time, in silence, while the world sleeps, I paint and talk to God and ask Him what it is He wants, what shall I paint, and well, this is what I got...time with Him, time to reflect and just be......May you have the spirit of being within you.

Do you See What I see?

All in a half days work, very temporary (paint that is!) but lovely all the same!

Nothing like painting a holiday winter scene, listening to Christmas music and painting out of doors in 75 degree weather! I love my job! This was fun to do; I painted with acrylics and used a snow-tex product for the frosting. Do you see what I see? Nope, the dogs on the other side can no longer see me and bark at me and well.....it’s a wonderful time of the year!

Raising The Barn

Raising the barn. Juxtaposition between light and dark. I love the way warm colors make neutrals shine forth. What is in your backyard? This is to me what empowers me to paint: old things, new things, and what gives me strength. I used mixed media on this as I tried plaster to make the cross stand out with texture. The barn is a photocopy and I cut it up to add dimension to the sky. There is more to the story but I will let you discover it.

The Stable

This is surely thinking of winter thoughts(a little too early) but I truly wanted to incorporate the spirit of wind and cold as I painted this Stable in Forest, Va. This oil was a true joy to paint as I gifted it to someone very special. If you would like a copy I can have it photgraphed on canvas or print. It will be published peice in a magazine. I love the softness of color lately. Unusual for me as I prefer bold. I tend to think I am in my blue phase!

Eastern Light

Ok, its been a while since I've posted. Whew...two art shows in a row will keep you too busy loading, unloading, cleaning, polishing, dusting, framing, straightening. I am worn out!
Back to my easel! This painting as an early morning, have to do it, and glad the sun was coming up! I am usually not a dark person and I typically do not use blue but alas, it works. This oil is on refurbished canvas. I am a green thumb ( I don't throw anything away!) Let me know what you think of the painting.

Ok, so I do not take great photos but this I painted yesterday from a picture I took in the neighbor's yard. I sure hope Mr. McGregor does not live there! But this thorny cactus with amazing red blooms does! I just had to share. Think I am getting into more color; it makes me happy. Actually just loving on my kids makes me happy. They are doing homework as I paint and we talk and give our best and worst of the day...Thorns are the worst but the bloom is the best. Glad the thorn though to protect the bloom............
