Google Gravity

Google Gravity is an experiment for Google Chrome. This experiment does not do anything useful other than amuse Chrome users for a bit. The idea is that when you pull up the Google search page, all the items on the page will drop to the bottom. I've read that you can even throw some words around.

This concept reminds me of a time where you could put ants on your desktop computer, which was amusing for a short period of time. Soon after, you delete the program and carry on as normal.

Also note that problems have been reported on browsers other than Google Chrome. This is most likely because it is a Google Chrome experiement so install accordingly!

To perform the trick of Google Gravity, just do the following:

Visit http://www.google.com/.
Make sure that Google Instant is off.
Type in Google Gravity into the search box.
Click on I’m Feeling Lucky button.
Move the mouse.

Note that the trick works best in Google Chrome and Safari, but appears to be working only partially in Firefox, and not working in Internet Explorer.

A remastered version of Google homepage will appear, where all components on the web pages will falling down to the bottom of the web browser (due to gravity) on any mouse hovers over. Best of all, these components – images, text, text boxes, buttons and etc. can be freely move around, and even threw to anywhere.

Google Gravity is not an easter egg of Google home page though. In actual, when clicking on “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, you’re taken directly to the URL returned as the fist search result, which is http://mrdoob.com/projects/chromeexperiments/google_gravity/. The effect can also be observed if visitor visits URL above directly, or click on the first link on the search results of “Google Gravity”.

The web page that end-user is been redirected contains a script which allows images manipulation, with the source code available for free download here.

browse or search your favorite dynamic flash template in TM website. If you got one... click the "view" link and new window will open with dynamic flash.. loading...

If the movie fully loaded, click View -> Source in your browser to bring the source code of the current page and in the source code, search for "IFRAME" and you will see the iframe page. In this example were going to try the 7045 dynamic template. get the URL(ex.http://images.templatemonster.com/screenshots/7000/7045.html) then paste it to your browser... easy eh? wait! dont be to excited... erase the .html and change it to swf then press enter then you'll see the flash movie again icon_smile.gif.

copy the URL and download that SWF file.. use your favorite download manager.. mine I used flashget icon_smile.gif NOTE: dont close the browser we may need that later on.

open your Sothink SWF decompiler... click "Quick Open" then browse where you download your SWF/movie file. Click Export FLA to export your SWF to FLA, in short, save it as FLA icon_smile.gif

Open your Macromedia FLash and open the saved FLA file. press Control+Enter or publish the file... then wallah! the output window will come up with "Error opening URL blah blah blah..." dont panic, that error will help you where to get the remaining files.

Copy the first error, example: "7045_main.html" then go back to your browser and replace the 7045.swf to 7045_main.html press enter and you'll see a lot of text... nonsense text icon_lol.gif that text are your contents...

NOTE: when you save the remaining files dont forget to save with underscore sign (_) in the front on the file without the TM item number (e.g. 7045) if it is html save it as "_main.html" and same with the image save it as "_works1.jpg" save them where you save the FLA and SWF files. Continue browsing the file inside Flash application so you can track the remaining files... do the same until you finish downloading all the remaining the files.

It is possible to use the header() function to send an "Authentication Required" message to the client browser causing it to pop up a Username/Password input window. Once the user has filled in a username and a password, the URL containing the PHP script will be called again with the predefined variablesPHP_AUTH_USER, PHP_AUTH_PW, and AUTH_TYPE set to the user name, password and authentication type respectively. These predefined variables are found in the $_SERVER and $HTTP_SERVER_VARS arrays. Both "Basic" and "Digest" (since PHP 5.1.0) authentication methods are supported. See the header() function for more information.

Note: Compatibility Note

Please be careful when coding the HTTP header lines. In order to guarantee maximum compatibility with all clients, the keyword "Basic" should be written with an uppercase "B", the realm string must be enclosed in double (not single) quotes, and exactly one space should precede the 401 code in the HTTP/1.0 401 header line. Authentication parameters have to be comma-separated as seen in the digest example above.

Instead of simply printing out PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW, as done in the above example, you may want to check the username and password for validity. Perhaps by sending a query to a database, or by looking up the user in a dbm file.

Watch out for buggy Internet Explorer browsers out there. They seem very picky about the order of the headers. Sending the WWW-Authenticate header before the HTTP/1.0 401 header seems to do the trick for now.

As of PHP 4.3.0, in order to prevent someone from writing a script which reveals the password for a page that was authenticated through a traditional external mechanism, the PHP_AUTH variables will not be set if external authentication is enabled for that particular page and safe mode is enabled. Regardless, REMOTE_USER can be used to identify the externally-authenticated user. So, you can use $_SERVER['REMOTE_USER'].

PHP uses the presence of an AuthType directive to determine whether external authentication is in effect.

Note, however, that the above does not prevent someone who controls a non-authenticated URL from stealing passwords from authenticated URLs on the same server.

Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer will clear the local browser window's authentication cache for the realm upon receiving a server response of 401. This can effectively "log out" a user, forcing them to re-enter their username and password. Some people use this to "time out" logins, or provide a "log-out" button.

This behavior is not required by the HTTP Basic authentication standard, so you should never depend on this. Testing with Lynx has shown that Lynx does not clear the authentication credentials with a 401 server response, so pressing back and then forward again will open the resource as long as the credential requirements haven't changed. The user can press the '_' key to clear their authentication information, however.

Also note that until PHP 4.3.3, HTTP Authentication did not work using Microsoft's IIS server with the CGI version of PHP due to a limitation of IIS. In order to get it to work in PHP 4.3.3+, you must edit your IIS configuration "Directory Security". Click on "Edit" and only check "Anonymous Access", all other fields should be left unchecked.

Another limitation is if you're using the IIS module (ISAPI) and PHP 4, you may not use the PHP_AUTH_*HTTP_AUTHORIZATION is available. The PHP 3 debugger protocol is line-based. Each line has a type, and several lines compose a message. Each message starts with a line of the type start and terminates with a line of the type end. PHP 3 may send lines for different messages simultaneously.

A line has this format:

PHP 3 includes support for a network-based debugger.
PHP 4 does not have an internal debugging facility. You can use one of the external debuggers though. The Zend IDE includes a debugger, and there are also some free debugger extensions like DBG at http://dd.cron.ru/dbg/, the Advanced PHP Debugger (APD) or Xdebug which even has a compatible debugger interface as PHP 3's debugging functionality as is described in this section.

Using the Debugger PHP

The internal debugger in PHP 3 is useful for tracking down evasive bugs. The debugger works by connecting to a TCP port for every time PHP 3 starts up. All error messages from that request will be sent to this TCP connection. This information is intended for "debugging server" that can run inside an IDE or programmable editor (such as Emacs).
How to set up the debugger:

Set up a TCP port for the debugger in the configuration file (debugger.port) and enable it (debugger.enabled).
Set up a TCP listener on that port somewhere (for example socket -l -s 1400 on Unix systems).
In your code, run "debugger_on(host)", where host is the IP number or name of the host running the TCP listener.

Now, all warnings, notices etc. will show up on that listener socket, even if you turned them off with error_reporting().

PEAR

PEAR, the PHP Extension and Application Repository (originally, PHP Extension and Add-on Repository) is PHP's version of foundation classes, and may grow in the future to be one of the key ways to distribute PHP extensions among developers.
PEAR was born in discussions held in the PHP Developers' Meeting (PDM) held in January 2000 in Tel Aviv. It was created by Stig S. Bakken, and is dedicated to his first-born daughter, Malin Bakken.
Since early 2000, PEAR has grown to be a big, significant project with a large number of developers working on implementing common, reusable functionality for the benefit of the entire PHP community. PEAR today includes a wide variety of infrastructure foundation classes for database access, content caching, mathematical calculations, eCommerce and much more.

PHP Quality Assurance Initiative

The PHP Quality Assurance Initiative was set up in the summer of 2000 in response to criticism that PHP releases were not being tested well enough for production environments. The team now consists of a core group of developers with a good understanding of the PHP code base. These developers spend a lot of their time localizing and fixing bugs within PHP. In addition there are many other team members who test and provide feedback on these fixes using a wide variety of platforms.

PHP-GTK

PHP-GTK is the PHP solution for writing client side GUI applications. Andrei Zmievski remembers the planing and creation process of PHP-GTK:

GUI programming has always been of my interests, and I found that Gtk+ is a very nice toolkit, except that programming with it in C is somewhat tedious. After witnessing PyGtk and GTK-Perl implementations, I decided to see if PHP could be made to interface with Gtk+, even minimally. Starting in August of 2000, I began to have a bit more free time so that is when I started experimenting. My main guideline was the PyGtk implementation as it was fairly feature complete and had a nice object-oriented interface. James Henstridge, the author of PyGtk, provided very helpful advice during those initial stages.
Hand-writing the interfaces to all the Gtk+ functions was out of the question, so I seized upon the idea of code-generator, similar to how PyGtk did it. The code generator is a PHP program that reads a set of .defs file containing the Gtk+ classes, constants, and methods information and generates C code that interfaces PHP with them. What cannot be generated automatically can be written by hand in .overrides file.
Working on the code generator and the infrastructure took some time, because I could spend little time on PHP-GTK during the fall of 2000. After I showed PHP-GTK to Frank Kromann, he got interested and started helping me out with code generator work and Win32 implementation. When we wrote the first Hello World program and fired it up, it was extremely exciting. It took a couple more months to get the project to a presentable condition and the initial version was released on March 1, 2001. The story promptly hit SlashDot.
Sensing that PHP-GTK might be extensive, I set up separate mailing lists and CVS repositories for it, as well as the gtk.php.net website with the help of Colin Viebrock. The documentation would also need to be done and James Moore came in to help with that.
Since its release PHP-GTK has been gaining popularity. We have our own documentation team, the manual keeps improving, people start writing extensions for PHP-GTK, and more and more exciting applications with it.

To the best of our knowledge, the first article about PHP in a hard-copy magazine was published in the Czech mutation of Computerworld in the spring of 1998, and covered PHP 3.0. As with books, this was the first in a series of many articles published about PHP in various prominent magazines.
Articles about PHP appeared in Dr. Dobbs, Linux Enterprise, Linux Magazine and many more. Articles about migrating ASP-based applications to PHP under Windows even appear on Microsoft's very own MSDN!

As PHP grew, it began to be recognized as a world-wide popular development platform. One of the most interesting ways of seeing this trend was by observing the books about PHP that came out throughout the years.
To the best of our knowledge, the first book dedicated to PHP was 'PHP - tvorba interaktivních internetových aplikací' - a Czech book published in April 1999, authored by Jirka Kosek. Next month followed a German book authored by Egon Schmid, Christian Cartus and Richard Blume. The first book in English about PHP was published shortly afterwards, and was 'Core PHP Programming' by Leon Atkinson. Both of these books covered PHP 3.0.
While these books were the first of their kind - they were followed by a large number of books from a host of authors and publishers. There are over 40 books in English, 50 books in German, and over 20 books in French! In addition, you can find books about PHP in many other languages, including Spanish, Korean, Japanese and Hebrew.
Clearly, this large number of books, written by different authors, published by many publishers, and their availability in so many languages - are a strong testimony for PHP's world-wide success.

PHP has come a long way in the last few years. Growing to be one of the most prominent languages powering the Web was not an easy task. Those of you interested in briefly seeing how PHP grew out to what it is today, read on. Old PHP releases can be found at the PHP Museum.

History of PHP

PHP/FI

PHP succeeds an older product, named PHP/FI. PHP/FI was created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, initially as a simple set of Perl scripts for tracking accesses to his online resume. He named this set of scripts 'Personal Home Page Tools'. As more functionality was required, Rasmus wrote a much larger C implementation, which was able to communicate with databases, and enabled users to develop simple dynamic Web applications. Rasmus chose to release the source code for PHP/FI for everybody to see, so that anybody can use it, as well as fix bugs in it and improve the code.
PHP/FI, which stood for Personal Home Page / Forms Interpreter, included some of the basic functionality of PHP as we know it today. It had Perl-like variables, automatic interpretation of form variables and HTML embedded syntax. The syntax itself was similar to that of Perl, albeit much more limited, simple, and somewhat inconsistent.
By 1997, PHP/FI 2.0, the second write-up of the C implementation, had a cult of several thousand users around the world (estimated), with approximately 50,000 domains reporting as having it installed, accounting for about 1% of the domains on the Internet. While there were several people contributing bits of code to this project, it was still at large a one-man project.
PHP/FI 2.0 was officially released only in November 1997, after spending most of its life in beta releases. It was shortly afterwards succeeded by the first alphas of PHP 3.0.

PHP 3

PHP 3.0 was the first version that closely resembles PHP as we know it today. It was created by Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski in 1997 as a complete rewrite, after they found PHP/FI 2.0 severely underpowered for developing an eCommerce application they were working on for a University project. In an effort to cooperate and start building upon PHP/FI's existing user-base, Andi, Rasmus and Zeev decided to cooperate and announce PHP 3.0 as the official successor of PHP/FI 2.0, and development of PHP/FI 2.0 was mostly halted.
One of the biggest strengths of PHP 3.0 was its strong extensibility features. In addition to providing end users with a solid infrastructure for lots of different databases, protocols and APIs, PHP 3.0's extensibility features attracted dozens of developers to join in and submit new extension modules. Arguably, this was the key to PHP 3.0's tremendous success. Other key features introduced in PHP 3.0 were the object oriented syntax support and the much more powerful and consistent language syntax.
The whole new language was released under a new name, that removed the implication of limited personal use that the PHP/FI 2.0 name held. It was named plain 'PHP', with the meaning being a recursive acronym - PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.
By the end of 1998, PHP grew to an install base of tens of thousands of users (estimated) and hundreds of thousands of Web sites reporting it installed. At its peak, PHP 3.0 was installed on approximately 10% of the Web servers on the Internet.
PHP 3.0 was officially released in June 1998, after having spent about 9 months in public testing.

PHP 4

By the winter of 1998, shortly after PHP 3.0 was officially released, Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski had begun working on a rewrite of PHP's core. The design goals were to improve performance of complex applications, and improve the modularity of PHP's code base. The new engine, dubbed 'Zend Engine' (comprised of their first names, Zeev and Andi), met these design goals successfully, and was first introduced in mid 1999. Dancing with the Stars is a reality show airing on ABC in the United States, and CTV in Canada in 2011. The show is the American version of the British BBC television series Strictly Come Dancing. Tom Bergeron is the host, with co-hosts Lisa Canning (season one), Samantha Harris (seasons two through nine), and Brooke Burke Charvet (seasons ten onwards).

The contestant pairs consist of a celebrity paired with a professional dancer. Past celebrity contestants include professional and Olympic athletes, supermodels, actors, singers, an astronaut, and teen-heartthrobs. Each couple performs predetermined dances and competes against the others for judges' points and audience votes. The couple receiving the lowest combined total of judges' points and audience votes is eliminated each week until only the champion dance pair remains.

In any case, surely you wanted to see one more performance from all those "Dancing with the Stars" contestants whose names you forgot once your hard-hearted votes eliminated them from the show.

Dancing With The Stars Winner? Oh, of course Hines Ward won. Any NFL player who can smile and move with even vague competence (there aren't many) will win the mirrorball trophy.

NFL players are the ultimate older lady's fantasy. Well, polite, smiley NFL players like Emmitt Smith and now Ward. Chelsea Kane, the actual best dancer in the competition, reminds the voters of everything they used to be - or wished they had once been. Surely, therefore, she couldn't curry enough favors from the envious.

Optimists will have wondered whether maybe, perhaps, the one more dance that was offered last night would somehow thrust Kane beyond the whims of the voters.

This would only be subject to the judges' voting. These judges could make all the difference.

Soon, these judges showed that they possessed the courage of limping llamas in Lima. Well, when I say "soon," I mean it took what seemed like hours before the contestants were actually allowed to take the floor for their final dances.

First, those who weren't watching on DVR were forced to endure performances from all the contestants whom the viewers had rejected. This was a beautiful joy that might only have been matched by blowing one's nose for a full hour and a half when one doesn't even have a cold.

It was more than one hour and 20 minutes into the show that the actual competition started.

Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas decided to perfect their Viennese Waltz - which they know as "The Wizard Waltz." They wept in rehearsal. This was emotional. They might never dance together again. Unless Disney offers Ballas a co-starring role in an upcoming new, elevated version of "Beauty and the Beast."

When it came to the real thing, Kane and Ballas again offered something as fantastical and inventive as the one decent "Harry Potter" movie. Of course, it was all too inventive for the voters at home. But here was a chance for the judges to declare that this was dancing of an entirely superior character.

"Bottom line, you are a fantastic dancer," said Goodman. He then muttered dark prognostications about "whatever happens tonight," as if he knew that not enough viewers would have offered her votes to some obscure Disney Channel starlet.

The judges all offered 10s. Surely this would be the standard by which others would be judged. Surely you believe that the moon is made of Paski Sir, the award-winning Croatian cheese.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy also had an emotional rehearsal of their favorite dance - the cha-cha. Alley has gained confidence and lost weight during these 13 weeks. And she gave this last performance every element of joy that she could muster. She doesn't stretch her legs as far as some, but her feet are often precise and her eyebrows are never short of being overly expressive.

"You saved the best for last," said Tonioli, before spitting out some multi-syllabic adjectives.

Carrie Ann Inaba offered nouns like "authenticity" and "transformation."

There was, however, nothing authentic and transformative about the fact that the judges all gave her 10s. This was a suitably crass abdication of responsibility, one that would inevitably mean that Kane and Ballas would be gone.

Ward and his partner Kym Johnson performed the samba, the dance that supposedly shows off Ward's hip movements. It also shows off his remarkably stiff torso.

Ward does, though, offer an innocent exuberance - as well as a lovely kiss for his mom - so who couldn't be charmed? Even Emmitt Smith was forced to smile - although Sarah Palin, also in the audience, seemed less than convinced. Perhaps she felt Bristol had been better than all of this.

"What is so appealing about you is the packaging," said Goodman, with arrant wisdom.

"When you're out here, we all fall in love," said Tonioli.

Guess what? The judges all gave Ward 10s. Which made these dances spectacularly irrelevant fillers of airtime.

With just a few minutes left, Kane and Ballas were inevitably told that they were in third place. Host Tom Bergeron had to hustle the show along, absolving Kane of the need to offer a few empty, heartfelt words.

We were down to two. Surely Alley didn't think she would win. Oh, but it looked like Chmerkovskiy did. When the winners were announced, the cameras were swiftly focused just on Ward and Johnson. Ward thanked all of the voters from his University of Georgia and Pittsburgh Steelers - or at least those who knit sweaters with Bulldogs and Steelers logos.

It was warming to see Johnson, the most lovable of professionals, partake of this glory. So, as we drifted away from this, America's most popular show, we could already feel the excitement to come when "Dancing with the Stars" returns in September. Yes, so soon. "Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future."
Meyer's qualifier of "this fall" is noteworthy as Ohio State has made it clear that the recruitment of a new coach will not begin until after the 2011-12 season, which could theoretically leave Meyer as a candidate down the road.

2013 Ford Escape After a full decade on the market, the Ford Escape is at last getting a ground-up redesign, and spies have caught this development mule out on an R&D mission. Although its innards are hidden beneath the curvy body of the current European Ford Kuga—which itself could have made a fitting second-gen Escape years ago—this vehicle gives away its actual identity with covered air intakes up front and ill-fitting tailpipes out back. However little we can actually see here, it is certain that the second-generation Escape will be a vastly different creature, both aesthetically and dynamically, from the Clinton-era ute we know now.

Ford previewed the new look at the Detroit auto show with the Vertrek concept, a clear evolution of both the Kuga’s shape, and Ford’s “Kinetic design” styling language. The most fundamental change will be a switch to Ford’s global C platform, which also serves as the foundation for the 2012 Focus, the upcoming C-Max, and the current Kuga, thereby allowing the Kuga and Escape to be merged into one global product.

Escape From Six-Cylinders?

We expect that Ford will offer a choice of powertrains in the next Escape, but we don’t expect any available engine to have more than four cylinders or be paired with a transmission containing fewer than six ratios. Ford’s ubiquitous 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque in the C-Max, is likely to be the base powerplant. The same EcoBoost 1.6-liter inline-four that powered the Vertrek could lend its 180 hp and 173 lb-ft to the production vehicle, and the mighty 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-banger is a possibility for the top-shelf Escape. With about 237 hp and 250 lb-ft, it could make for an interesting Escape Sport. And, of course, the return of the Escape hybrid is a no-brainer. Expect to see upgrades to the system used in today’s hybrid, if not a completely new system or a plug-in version like that found in the C-Max Energi also shown in Detroit.

Most everything else about the 2013 Ford Escape remains a mystery, other than a virtual guarantee of far more luxurious environs than are offered in today’s version, and that the MyFord Touch interface will be available. As the best-selling compact SUV for much of its time on the market, the Escape is hugely significant for Ford and for crossover customers. Watch for more details on the production car as they inevitably—forgive us—escape.

The Stop Online Piracy Act is latest offensive in the content industry's never-ending war on copyright infringement is the Stop Online Piracy Act, which was introduced in the House two weeks ago. It incorporates key provisions of the Senate's Protect IP Act as well as another Senate bill that makes unauthorized streaming a felony. But it also includes new provisions that go beyond the language in either of those bills. If passed, it would be the most sweeping overhaul of copyright law in at least a decade.
Ars discussed the proposal with Ryan Radia of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a libertarian think tank. He's been actively engaged in this year's copyright debates on Capitol Hill, and he argued that the sweeping language of SOPA was specifically designed to undermine the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

A content industry wishlist

Supporters of the legislation say it's needed to combat "rogue" websites hosted overseas. Such rogue sites deliver infringing content to American consumers while remaining out of reach of American law enforcement. A series of bills, starting with last year's COICA legislation, have tried to shut down these sites by going after intermediaries, including DNS servers, payment processors, search engines, and ad networks.
These bills have gotten more and more ambitious. For example, critics pointed out that the DNS blacklist in earlier bills would be easy to circumvent. So not only does SOPA force DNS servers to blacklist websites, but it also allows the government to obtain injunctions against anti-censorship software like MAFIAAFire that circumvents the government's DNS-blocking efforts. Radia points out that this could make the US government look hypocritical if Congress passed such an anti-circumvention law at the same time the Obama administration has pledged to support the creation of similar technology to resist the censorship of repressive foreign regimes.
The legislation also incorporates a Senate proposal to make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted works a felony. "The problem is that there's no commercial gain requirement in the House version," Radia told Ars. And he argued that the dollar-value thresholds in SOPA are too low, creating a risk that minor offenders—maybe even Justin Bieber—will wind up in jail.

"This is intentional"

Probably the most ambitious new provision in SOPA is the creation of a new DMCA-style notice and takedown system. The DMCA's provides a safe harbor from copyright liability for sites that comply with takedown requests for individual items. In contrast, the SOPA notice-and-takedown regime allows copyright holders to attack entire websites by cutting off their access to payment and ad networks.
The major content industries have made no effort to hide their disdain for the DMCA safe harbor. Recording Industry Association of America lawyer Jennifer Pariser recently argued that "the courts are interpreting Congress' statute in a manner that is entirely too restrictive of content owners' rights and too open to [Internet] service providers."
The DMCA's safe harbor doesn't protect websites that encourage infringement or ignore "red flag" evidence of infringement. But Pariser argued that the courts have been letting sites off the hook too easily.
She claimed that the RIAA hasn't started lobbying for changes to the DMCA, but Radia believes that content companies have been pushing for SOPA for precisely this reason. "The bill is written in a way that covers a far broader category of sites" than ordinary "rogue" websites, he told Ars. "I think this is intentional."
"Many of the companies that have long wished that the DMCA imposed a greater obligation on online intermediaries to act against infringement see this bill as an effective means of accomplishing their end goals without opening the can of worms of revisiting the DMCA safe harbor," he said.
Radia pointed out that "it's entirely possible that an intermediary that is protected by the DMCA safe harbor could also fit within the category of sites dedicated to infringement." So companies that build websites based on the rules of the DMCA might suddenly find themselves on shaky legal ground.

Spooking investors?

The courts have been interpreting the DMCA's safe harbor for 13 years, and we now have a pretty clear idea of what sites must do to qualify for it. But SOPA's "dedicated to theft of US property" standard is much less clear, and it will take years for the courts to sort out what it means. In the meantime, the uncertainty could discourage investment in Internet technology and cause real and irreparable harm.
Radia said this kind of concern has inspired venture capitalists to strongly oppose the legislation. For example, he pointed out that Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures spent time in DC last week lobbying against the SOPA. As we've reported, Wilson and other investors have been fighting SOPA and its predecessors for months. "Given the importance of VC to overall economy and job growth, I suspect the members will take these concerns seriously," Radia predicted.
SOPA also includes a section on "denying US capital to notorious foreign infringers." The term "notorious foreign infringers" is never defined, but the bill instructs the intellectual property enforcement coordinator to prepare a report to Congress—with input from "members of the public, including holders of intellectual property rights in the United States"—on "the significant harm inflicted by notorious foreign infringers on consumers, businesses, and intellectual property industries." The IPEC is also asked to examine whether government should have the power to blacklist designated "notorious foreign infringers" from raising capital in the United States.
Thankfully, this part of the bill doesn't actually give the government the power to create an investment blacklist. But the language suggests the industry is already laying the groundwork for its next legislative initiative.

"We are not looking to re-open the DMCA"

RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duckworth denied her industry is trying to revise the DMCA. "We are pursuing marketplace solutions and working voluntarily with third parties to discourage online content theft," she said.
What does she mean by "marketplace solutions?" This is evidently a reference to the SOPA provisions giving copyright holders the right to seek legal injunctions that force payment processors and ad networks to cut off infringing websites. SOPA itself labels these takedown requirements a "market based system" to "prevent US funding of sites dedicated to theft of US property."
The RIAA also stands behind Pariser's comments, which Duckworth says are "simply a reflection of the well-documented and general frustration content owners feel when faced with the incredible burden of 24/7 monitoring and sending notices regarding unauthorized content that gets re-posted immediately upon takedown."
Of course, "24/7 monitoring and sending notices" is the system Congress set up when it passed the DMCA. Enforcing copyrights is expensive, and the DMCA properly puts most of the costs of enforcement where they belong: on the copyright holders who benefit from copyright protection. Unsurprisingly, the RIAA would like to shift those costs onto third parties such as payment processors, ad networks, and DNS providers.
We think Congress struck the right balance in 1998. Radia, however, is more sympathetic to the RIAA's plight. He favors compromise legislation that would narrowly focus on true rogue websites. He would eliminate the DNS blacklist, which he sees as ineffective and ripe for abuse. But he would leave in place the rules related to payment processors and ad networks. He would also tighten up the definition of rogue sites by making it clear that anyone who qualified for the DMCA safe harbor was not a rogue site. And he said that he would explicitly exempt US sites from the reach of the bill, since those sites can be dealt with under existing US copyright law.

Update: Duckworth contacted us to clarify that the "market-based solutions" she had in mind are "voluntary agreements with third parties, such as our recent agreement with ISPs to discourage content theft on their networks." Of course, given the rumors of White House arm-twisting, we have our doubts about how voluntary that agreement was.

Text is what gets ranked in most search engines, and alt text is a poor alternative.

Format your keyword phrases to stand out (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

Use <strong> and <em> where appropriate to make your keyword phrases stand out. Search engines can read those tags, and will recognize that text that is emphasized is often more important than the surrounding text.

Don't have more than 10 words in your URL (AVOID)

While you want to have keywords in your URL (and domain if possible), longer URLs tend to look more spammy to both customers and search engines. However, this isn't a serious issue, and if you need to have 11 or 15 words in your URL, it shouldn't be a problem, as long as you aren't doing it all the time.

Put up links that flow within the text (MEDIUM PRIORITY)
Links that make sense within the context of the document (whether from external or your own site) will rank higher than lists of links or other forms of artificial links. This is because search engines value content and links that make sense within the context of the content are more definitely related to that content than links that are inside lists.

Get as many inbound links as you can (MEDIUM PRIORITY)
Links are important, especially from sites other than your own. These are called inbound links. And if you get a lot of inbound links, that will help your page ranking. Remember that 1-2 links from high-reputation sites are better than 10 links from link farms.

Write unique content (HIGH PRIORITY)

Unique content is important too. You need to provide content that has different information than what is on other sites and other Web pages.

Don't rely on links from domains on the same IP (AVOID)
While Google doesn't discriminate against domains that have the same IP (for example, domains that use virtual hosts), other search engines may. So it's best to avoid trying to increase your inbound links with links from other domains that you own. The same is true for domains hosted on the same hosting provider (coming from the same C-level IP address). Google doesn't penalize sites like this, but other engines might.
This is another situation where if it becomes apparent that you're doing it, you could get all your sites banned from search engines.

Create as much content as you can (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

Content is king. The more content you have on your site, the more there is to be indexed and appear in search engines.

Don't create pages of links (AVOID)

Pages of links are boring both for your customers and for search engines. Most search engines value links that are in context and appear related to the page as a whole. Note, however, that many social networking sites (like Digg and del.icio.us) tend to favor pages that are lists of links, so sometimes it can be advantageous to write them anyway, just don't expect them to rank high in search engines.

Choose a phrase that is popular, but not too popular (HIGH PRIORITY)

When trying to decide on a keyword phrase, you want to find one that is popular but not extremely popular. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the reality is that extremely popular keywords are very desirable and so very competitive. It's better to try to optimize for keywords that you can rank higher. You'll get more pageviews from a less popular keyword when you're on the first or second page of the search engines, than from a super popular keyword that you only make it to page 50 of search engines.
