RESTLESS(EP) – SIMI: A FAN’S OPINION

So I downloaded the RESTLESS EP and drowned myself in emotions delicately placed over borrowed instrumentation from urban classics such as 1 Republic’s “Too late”, Bruno Mars’ “Grenade”, Beyonce’s “Halo”, Rihanna’s “Man down” and Adele’s “set fire to the rain”.

What struck me almost immediately was Simi’s sultry beckoning coo. But the girl excels even better at her songwriting. Wittily skipping from English to Pidgin and back again, keeping her message funny and relatable are strong marks for this young lady clearly having fun with this project.

Simi clearly leaves you yearning for more just as the 5^thand final track begins to fade away. *sighing*

But then you can hit the replay button and enjoy the ride all over again!

On “20nine”,performed over “too late”, Simi relates the story of a girl done wrong persistently by her man and she can’t let go because she’s on the fringe of 30, the age mark which spells doom for the spinster in our times and clime. This song is sad and funny all at once, highlighting the bad boy’s no goodness and the forlorn “I’ve come to terms with it” attitude of the girlfriend, who still wants to settle down with said bad boy!

“Range Rover” is clearly my favourite as Simi calmly but resolutely states that she will not date a poor man, citing the poor economy as a solid reason. I laughed from the get go. However, there are those who will fail to notice the sarcasm dripping from this one. I’m tempted to think that 20nine is a fall-out of the unachieved expectations highlighted in this track. Rihanna’s “man down” instrumentals, serve as a palette for this.

“Misbehaviour”was sung over “Grenade”instrumentals. Simi’s wit is all over this, claiming impossible acts she’ll take on just to prove how deep her love is for a guy wey just dey misbehave! Including daring to slap a policeman! For Naija, you wan die?

“Why you forget” to Beyonce’s “Halo” and “Not Okay” to Adele’s “set fire to the rain”, continue on this trend of excellent vocals with witty lyrics about lost love over familiar beats and showcase Simi’s extensive vocal range, especially as she’s credited with backing vocals and vocal arrangements.

For an EP that was recorded in a corner of her bedroom, this is exceptional. I’ve heard stuff from world class studios that don’t come close.

Do I have to rate this?

I will anyway.

So last week, my friend bifor bifor, Simisola Ogunleye aka Simi decided to tell the world that she hadn’t given up on her ambitions to be one of Naija’s finest female vocalists. She put out an EP titled #Restless. A good listen will tell you how restless this cute bundle of talent is!

Thiefing instrumentals from Beyonce (Halo) for “Why you forget”, Rihanna (Man Down) for “Range Rover” and more… this petite chic went all out to prove she could own any beat with her deft lyrical touches and vocal prowess!

Since she released a full length gospel album in ’08 titled Ogaju, Simi ’s been studying the terrain and despite the lure from the darkside of raunchiness, pangolo beats and codeine inspired (non)lyricism, she’s held on to her Faith and God given skills while honing her production skills too!

The reviews for #Restless are incredible, with some fans going on to say that those 5 tracks sound much better than some people’s entire albums! *ouch*

As a reminder, Password picked up an award for best music soundtrack, for his compositions on the musical "Hoodrush" which starred OC Ukeje among others.

A Search Engine Just for Radio

RadioSearchEngine.com has been unveiled. The new website allows a user to search for any song or artist and find out where it's playing on stations anywhere in the world.RadioSearchEngine.com provides a universal web player which displays results and allows you to listen.

How does it work? "Tens of thousands of stations are scanned every 3-5 seconds to get the currently playing song. This index is used to construct a real-time library of ever changing music on the radio all of which searchable," according to a news release.

The user gets search results, additional suggestions by the artist being searched, a skip button to advance to a related song, and more. RadioSearchEngine.com is in beta but online and useable. Give it a try - it's pretty good.

CYANIDE (SHORT FILM)

The boys from Ficson Films are back with another short film, "Cyanide". This film is about loss, grief and depression and stars Kemi Michaels and Tope Tedela in leading and only roles.

It's a silent film and features a score (what we call soundtrack) produced by Chidi Nnadi, known in Naija Hiphop circles as Yung Tite.

Pay close attention to the CGI effects subtly used in this piece as Eri Umusu once again steps up to the plate to deliver a stellar visual masterpiece.

There were concerns during production on whether Nigerians will "get" the story and not have to consult Oracles to decipher.

Personally, I don't think there's anything to fear as a paradigm shift is taking place.

Meanwhile, work is in progress to ensure that the sequel to "The Day They Came", surpasses the impact the first offering made with more action and mind blowing CGI!

And yes, I do hope to give a brilliant account of myself again with my narration and acting chops.

Nene Johnson, erstwhile half of singing duo, Xtacy continues to circumnavigate these treacherous music waters, hoping to give us that 1 hit that will establish her as a bonafide female artiste with true pedigree.
Do I think Nene is a good singer? I do think she's a fantastic singer but this song may not prove that as she seems a bit like "Dorothy" in a wilderness of pulsating beats, voice effects and long worn party themed (non)lyrics.
If you are not offended by the lack of depth in the lyrical construct and probably look forward to a bootyfest video accompaniment, then this song may just work for you.
The song is produced by hitmaker, Scope Nero who throws in a few bars.
PS: this is a solid workout tune & I like it!

Okezie Morro

If the name seems unfamiliar now, I’ll forgive you. But in a few months, he’ll be a household movie name and then the famzingwill begin.

Let me beat you all to it sha.

Okezie Morro, (born Okezie “O.C.” Madubuko), is a British born Nigerian stage and film actor. He was born in the early eighties and had his early growing up in FESTAC Lagos Nigeria before relocating permanently to the UK in the late 80s.

A versatile breed, Okezie’s initial passion was for sport and he excelled in track and field as well as football (he almost signed up for Liverpool in the 90s before a freak knee injury put paid to that dream).

His athletic dreams also suffered a setback because of this injury. However, he had excelled in junior championships representing the UK in numerous events.

Anyway, Okezie’s my 1^st cousin and he’s in town for MTV Shuga, in which he plays a character called Ekene.

Interestingly, Okezie got married only a few days before he was beckoned to the motherland yet he jumped at the opportunity to touch base with home.

So on Sunday he paid the wife and I a visit, got to watch Liverpool nip Manchester United at a local pub (no free beer Ads, sorry) and shared his experiences with an aspiring young film maker, Genesis “ the Geneos” William (another name you need to remember).

Secondly, he/she should be creative. Some humor is also a good feature to have.

They should know a bit about radio production because this gives ability to produce various items to add onto their program lineup.

Those small additional productions give the listener an extra reason to stay hooked while also attracting more fresh audience.In the end,such a line of things pushes audience numbers up and this is something that can increase advertising revenue.

Having been a BBC radio producer and manager of Radio Manchester for 7 years, John Ryan of 2ZY knows his radio rules inside out. In this Fast Train session he shared his tips for quality radio presentation.

Rule 1 – Be the authentic you. People who are the same in real life as on the air make the best presenters. Don't use unnatural words or phrases you wouldn't say in everyday life, and never laugh unless you mean it.

Rule 2 – Talk to one person. Radio is an intimate medium, best when aimed at an individual. Pluralising ("Hi, listeners") breaks the bond between presenter and listener – use "you" as much as possible instead.

Rule 3 – Feel the length. A great link might be 4 seconds or 40 minutes. Trust your producer, as they might be a better judge of when it's time to stop. If you’re a solo broadcaster, listen to your own show. If you find your links too long, then they'll definitely bore the listener!

Rule 4 – Respect the music. Talking over the beginning or end of a song is like vandalising a piece of art. The only exception is with songs that fade out, but never start talking till the song has at least reached the chorus after the middle 8.

Rule 5 – Life is prep. Keep a notepad or phone with you at all times. Read a magazine or watch a show you’ve never tried before – it will give you new ideas. Over-preparing can be as bad as under-preparing; remember that radio is an art form, not a science.
