Between now and the 3rd, I will be working early voting as a state election judge. Posting may or may not happen!

Vintage Woodworking - A "Double-Duty" Tray from 1954

2026-10-13T11:03:50.208-07:00

From William Hennessey's 1954 book Things for Boys and Girls To Make (a remarkably unsexist collection of woodworking projects, considering the year it was published). Suitable for dollhouse use if made at 1/12 scale from popsicle sticks.

Available as a loan only at the Internet Archive.

There's No Place Like Home

...even if I did have to deal with a sump pump repair team at 0800 on my first morning back.

I Couldn't Help Myself

Other Knitter: I took a thrumming class this morning and we made a pair of slippers. Have you ever tried thrumming?

Me: Not since I gave up my banjo.

(She did not slap me, which I thought showed commendable restraint).

As Ye Knit, So Shall Ye Rip

This does not show how far back I had to rip it after I made humongous mistake in the grey pattern.

Famous Last Words

And On My Very First Day

2026-09-26T08:16:30.575-07:00

I tripped over the curb at the War Memorial in Lerwick and fell flat on my face.

History repeats itself.

(UPDATE: Three nights later, I rolled over in the twin bed in my hotel room and fell out, hitting every single corner on the nightstand and accumulating a set of bruises on my shoulder and wrist that made my husband scowl when I got home. I am used to sleeping in a much larger bed).

And The Horse They Rode In On

2026-09-21T11:50:58.823-07:00

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years.

Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called farm price supports.

Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people ~ Harry Truman.

Stranger Danger

2026-09-16T19:25:35.146-07:00

When Baldur the Wonder Dog and I finished at the library tonight, we were followed out to the parking lot by five little girls (and I mean little, the ramrod of the outfit was probably about nine). I explained that it was time to take the doggie home, opened the back door of the Blazer, and gave the command LOAD. Baldur jumped in.

So did five little girls.

(I had to bribe them with bookmarks to get them out).

Ten Days And A Wakeup

2026-09-15T14:05:00.000-07:00

I will be attending with one of the ladies that I met on my last knitting trip to Scotland in 2018 - let us hope there will not be a repeat of this incident.

Vintage Sewing - A Summer Dress from Burda

2026-09-15T03:30:00.000-07:00

This diagram for this summer dress ("Cut without fear") from a 1950's Burda sewing magazine is pretty self-explanatory - just remember to translate the measurements from metric to US.

Webkante - selvage
Seitenaht - side seam
Vordere Mitte - center front
Rueckwaertige Mitte - center back.

Depending on where you live, there should be enough warm days left to enjoy this. Cut it short for littler girls, it's completely adjustable.

(You can always get a head start on your Christmas sewing and make it as a nightie or a maternity jumper for a loved one who is expecting).
