Fast and Furious 7 Review

After his beloved by both critics and audiences horror movie The Conjuring, director James Wan steps in Justin Lin's place and takes over the latest installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. He transitions really well from the low-budget horror movie genre to the massive, action blockbuster one. This results in an enjoyable experience at the movie theatre where you just go with the action and stop thinking for two and a half hours.

Furious 7 follows the gang after the events that happened in Fast and Furious 6. Owen Shaw's brother, Deckard(Jason Statham) is out for blood, wanting to revenge his sibling's crippling by Vin Diesel's family and Hobbs. And after Deckard kills Han and destroys the Toretto home, Dom is also on the hunt. Consequently, this takes everyone except for Mia, who is in a safe heaven in the Dominican Republic, to a variety of exotic locations like Abu Dhabi and Azerbaijan where a lot of the action and mayhem occur. You get sky-diving cars, flying cars and lots of action.

On the other hand for the first twenty minutes or so I noticed something odd for this type of movie - character development. The characters are shown living their lives with the few difficulties they had. By the end you feel emotionally connected to most of the characters. The acting is great, but I felt the Rock was underused. I have to applaud Wan's desire to incorporate everything into one feature film. However, this is also the biggest problem; the movie is something between action, comedy, drama and thriller and therefore the tone is inconsistent.

After Paul Walker's devastating death many were concerned about what would happen to the character. The studio and the filmmakers were considerable enough not try to commercialise Walker's death by promoting the movie as his last one. They've managed to pay a tear-jerking good tribute to him at the end of the movie.

The directing is well done but it lacked Justin Lin's slick look. Even though it's one of the franchise's trademarks, I felt the camera lingered a bit too much on the behinds of the hot girls. The other problem I had was the quick-cut hand combats; the fistfights are cut way too often, there is a lot of shaky-cam and those reminiscent of Michael Bay and Nolan when they are doing human fights. Conversely, the movie is, most of the time, gorgeous to look at. The soundtrack and visual effects are favorable too.

Furious 7 is a nice continuation of the Fast and Furious series which pays a wonderful tribute to Paul Walker. For the over-the-top franchise this is, the movie is ingenious enough to make the paid money for the cinema worth your while.

helped me craft the Thorn and the Sinking Stone to what 

it is today:

Romeo & Juliet:

 This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has alr

eady read the 

story. The Thorn and the Sinking Stone was heavily inspi

red by Shakespeare’s Romeo 

and Juliet. Two warring families, young, forbidden love... the ge

neral plot is true to the 

play. I’ve always loved Romeo and Juliet, like a lot of

 people, and I wondered what the 

story would be like told in a similar place several hundre

ds of years later, given similar 

circumstance and a whole new set of rules. And since B

az Lurhman is one of my 

favourite movie directors, of course I was inspired by hi

s modern twist on the classic tale. 

Something about his version with guns and fast cars with a

 dark setting really inspired the

Колкото и да искам не мога да си кривя душата, филмът на Максим Генчев е красиво заснет, но с огромни проблеми в сценария и изпълнението.

Да започнем с хубавите неща. Симеон играе ролята на малкия апостол добре, макар и да преиграва на места, но Веселин Плачков е звездата, която се справя идеално с ролята, която му е поверена. Допринася към образа на Левски и винаги, когато се появи на екрана, блести. За съжаление, самият Левски се появява във филма за много по-кратко време от очакваното. На това се дължи и липсата на емоционална обвързаност с героя, която до края на тричасовия филм става осезаема.

Главният проблем на филма са множеството сюжетни линии. Режисьорът е преценил, че в дългия филм ще може да разкаже много истории и с това ще впечатли зрителите. Ефектът, обаче, е точно обратният - част от тях остават незавършени до края на филма и, следователно, не впечатляват зрителя. За филм, който се казва "Дякон Левски" човек ще си помисли, че Левски е главният герой. Това е така, но филмът по-скоро следва стила на сериалите на HBO, като "Истинска кръв" или "Игра на Тронове", където има множество персонажи, чиито сюжети текат успоредно и всички са главни. Главният проблем на филма, поне според мен, е фактът, че е твърде наблегнато върху турските герои и техните случки. За български филм, около почти една втора се говори на турски, което не позволява от филма да излъчва патриотизъм.

За нещо, което би трябвало да възхвалява и да показва в най-добрата светлина най-известния ни апостол, филмът не успява да пресъздаде образа му правилно. Искам да отбележа, че това няма нищо общо с актьора, а със сценария. Истина е, че режисьорът не може да създаде версията на Левски, която всеки един българин си представя, но в героя липсваха основните черти, с които е описван. Една от тези черти е оптимизмът му, който го прави тази светла и бодра личност както Ботев го описва "дърво и камък се пука от студ, а той пее ли пее". Друг голям проблем с образа на революционера е, че нито една от култовите му реплики като "Ако спечеля, печели цял народ, ако загубя - губя само аз
ако изгубя, губя само себе си!" не присъства.

Героят на Левски понякога е представен приемливо, но през повечето време - изключително зле. За герой като него този филм е подигравка. Представен е като един човек, който просто е говорел и нищо не е правил. Да, имаше няколко силни момента с него, в които има няколко речи, но те са напълно 2 или 3 и това е. Колкото до прословутата реплика "Да ти е*а майката!" не се обидих от нея, защото Левски е бил човек и е нормално понякога да изпсува. Това, което ме обиди дълбоко беше частта със залавянето му. Едва ли не турците тръгнаха да го търсят и веднага го намериха, той не е бягал и не се е дегизирал. А фактът, че просто се предаде ме фрапира напълно. Имаше момент, когато с чук счупиха глезените на Левски, а в следващия кадър ходеше. За съжаление в сцената, когато обесиха апостола не можах да изпитам нищо, въпреки че в продължение на няколко минути гледах как виси на бесилото.

Британският лорд Бонър е персонаж, който няма никакво място във филма. Главната му цел е да търси мощите на св. Игнатий. Чужденецът си служи с български и го говори толкова добре колкото и българин и само обикаляше манастирите. Жената, която се мъкнеше с него пък нямаше абсолютно никаква цел. Просто беше там…

Ботев, от друга страна, е единственият герой, към когото изпитах някаква симпатия. Толкова е позитивен и добре представен. Точно лудата глава, която е бил. Видях повече отколкото предполагах от него, което е едно от малкото неща, които ми харесаха във филма.

В тези повече от три часа и половина филм се появят множество персонажи, които не са представени и правят някакви неща, които са напълно несвързани с мързеливо написания сценарий.

Освен Ботев и играта на Плачков ми харесаха режисурата и музиката. Тук ще отворя скоба и ще кажа, че озвучаването, диалога, беше лошо. В част от сцените на филма не се разбират репликите на героите. Гледките и самото движение на камерата ми допаднаха. Музиката беше добра, но все си мисля, че можеха да ползват повече народна музика, освен тъпана и една-две песни. Монтажът не беше добър, защото имаше много непостоянства като факта, че в единия момент виждаш герой в разцвета на силите си, в следващия е ранен и едва живее или по-горе споменатият момент с чупенето на краката на Левски. Изглежда сякаш са снимали много неща и по-сполучливите неща са скалъпени набързо.

"Дякон Левски" е без емоционален филм с мързелив сценарий, който не позволява на зрителя да се свърже с героите, а непостоянстово и накъсаността не дават възможност на зрителя да се наслади на филм с красива режисура, който би могъл да е на нивото на класиката "Време Разделно".

The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepard Review

The Madmen's daughter circles around Juliet Monreau who lives in London, whose father was involved in some sort of scandal few years ago, when he left, and her mother has recently passed away so she's forced to take care for herself. She works as a cleaning lady, although before she's been rich and all of her friends are different from her. One day when she runs into Montgomery, who used to be part of their household staff and she has not seen him since her dad's disappearance. He tells her that her father is alive and they are working together on a remote island. Soon Juliets finds herself on this island and not everything is as it seems.

The book is fast-paced... sort of. When I picked up this book I was amazed by how fast it moved, but then I started to get disappointed. Every time something interesting is about to happen, it happens and then we're reading her confusion for a couple of pages. I closed my eyes for the first couple of times but it was a constant problem for me throughout the book.

Also the love triangle is weird. You've got Montgomery, who she knows for a very long time and then you've got Edward, who they find in the sea somewhere. It was pretty obvious who she liked more and just there was something about the triangle that spoke... boring. It's nowhere near as sophisticated as the one in Jennifer L. Armentrout's Dark Elements series.

Nevertheless, the plot is gripping if you leave out the stretching. It is thought-out and there are quite a few questions asked like 'What makes us human?' or 'What makes you civilised' which is both connected to Juliet and the creatures living on the island. Her father pretty much thinks he's a god of the island and can do whatever he likes. There also quite a few twists I did no see coming. The writing is so beautiful and detailed. It really lets you enter this girl's head.

In short, The Madman's Daughter is a good book if you are looking for historical fiction/fantasy/drama and good writing. However, be warned about the weird pacing and strange love triangle.

Creeping along, I slipped through the gates before they closed. The exterior lights shut off. The

glow from inside the mansion threw shadows across the courtyard, making everything around me

creepier. If that was even possible. At least these people hadn’t invested in motion lights.

I needed to get to the window on the second floor. And how the heck did I know that? Like

everything else about this trip, I just did. A tall trellis swamped with vines ran up one side of the

house. That could be the ticket. I inched closer.

I'd just about made it when a raspy voice reached my ears.

"The boy is alone. You've done well by me.”

Shivers ran up and down my arms as I swallowed and turned. No one. It must've come from

inside the house. Ahead, a small window, one of those decorative deals, stood open. Taking slow

steps, I moved toward it.

"Thank you," said a second voice, crisp, sort of fancy…British, maybe?

"We can take him now. Use his power to harness what I need,” Spooky Voice said.

“As you wish."

Go, go, go. A voice or maybe my own thoughts echoed inside my brain. I didn’t have time to

think.

Go, go, go. The voice came back. I had to get to the second floor. Now.

The wood trellis scratched my hands when I grabbed hold. Splinters pierced my skin as I scaled

the wall. I had to get to the boy.

"This is crazy, Gabe." I muttered the words. “This could actually be the stupidest thing you've

ever done."

I climbed to the window way faster than I thought I could. This one part of me wanted to glance

back, to see if Val noticed me. I ignored it though—I needed to get to the top. To the kid with green eyes.

Is fanfiction literature? (Discussion)

That's right, today I am going to share with you what I think about fanfiction.

I hadn't really read much fanfiction before around 2 months. Frankly, it's not what I typically read but something I just do from time to time. It started with some Divergent fanfiction and I had never imagined there were so many people invested in developing stories for their favourite characters. These stories sometimes feel as if they should have been part of the book. In fact, this is what the point of this genre, if I can call it like that, is.

I get it when people say fanfiction is not real literature because it's someone else's idea. They have a point but are not 100% correct. Yes, ideas might be taken from another place but it is the way the story is developed that matters. As a matter of fact, many fanfictions have surpassed their origin story. And maybe the problem comes from here. Every now and then some aspiring authors actually develop the story in a much better way than the original one. But this act can also hurt the person who wrote the thing first.

This might somewhat hypocritical, but I son't agree fanfiction should be classified as original work. When publishers accept a manuscript like that they should publish it in fanfiction and say what it is based off. The original author needs to have some sort of credit for the story.

In short, I agree fanfiction is literature but has to be what it is - fanfiction. If publishing houses are to publish more and more of those, they need to promote them as ones, not as original stories.

BRANDED by ABI KETNER & MISSY KALICICKI + GIVEAWAY

The first book in the 'Sinners' series which take place around the branded with lust Lexi Hamilton.

To punish the guilty, he created the Hole, a place where sinners are branded according to their sins. Sinners are forced to live a less than human existence in deplorable conditions, under the watchful eye of guards who are ready to kill anyone who steps out of line.

Now, LUST wraps around my neck like thick, blue fingers, threatening to choke the life out of me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit, and the Hole is my new home.

Review:

At first I did not know what to expect of this novel. I knew it was some sort of a dystopian but nothing more than that. I was genuinely surprised by how good this books is. It has all the qualities of a gripping read.

The story grabs you from the first page and really takes you on this adventure in the Hole. It shows this dark and depressing world where people get branded according to their sin. The plot is very captivating and well thought-out. There is a stong, emotional impact at certain point that made me feel uncomfortable reading it on the train due to some sort of rushing feelings. I did sense some revolution, propaganda and war themes. Also what I liked is the fact the story isn't based off the romance. It is well-done and is unobtrusive.

You can really relate to the main characters, specifically, Lexi. She is also the most developed one. She starts with being this weak personage who then becomes this strong, young woman willing to fight. I really enjoyed that change.

The writing style is unique and seamless. The two authors have blended without any problems, whatsoever. They are descriptive and have created this not so exuberant world. They have done their job.

'Branded' is an appealing and exhilarating red which will make you feel unsure of what is going and will keep you on the edge of your seat and just when things can't get more intense you fall of the chair. The writers have done a terrific job at explaining the plot and in small, but needed details.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Review

The highly anticipated sequel to ' The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ' is a beautifully tragic and a visually stunning work of art.

The story picks up right where we left off with the previous movie with Katniss being full of regret

because she was saved instead of Peeta and the other tributes. It quickly evolves in this movie about a war and what it means with the underlying theme of the consequences of the games over Katniss and what PTSD can do to you.

Jennifer Lawrence brings a marvelous performance and successfully portrays this complex character. One of the most memorable scenes was when she got back to District 12. We also see Josh Hutcherson a.k.a. Peeta go through many transitions and his acting has only improved since the first film. The newcomers, Julianne Moore and Nataly Dormer are scene-stealers.

Many people, including myself, we're afraid that 'Part 1' is going to be dull and boring. It was nothing whatsoever. The pacing was on point and the same goes for storytelling.

The director, Francis Lawrence, has delivered the best experience you could possibly expect from the first half of the book. There is, in fact, humor added which was missing in the previous installments. He had also done this remarkable job at expanding the universe with showing us more from the different districts. The CGI work is better than ever before and so are the cinematography and editing.

The score is also very fitting and has borrowed a few things from previous installments. The awaited 'Hanging Tree' song is very unique and got stuck into my head.

In short, I can easily say this is the best book-to-movie adaptation and even surpassed the book in a few ways. The acting and storytelling are phenomenal and the ending is sensational. The film ends on such a high note and cliffhanger which leaves the fans yearning for the fourth and final installment of the series.

"Войната на Буквите" е роман, в който се съдържат толкова много неща - увлекателност, невероятен стил на писане, обективност и още много други позитивни качества. Историята е увлекателна дори за мен, имайки предвид, че не съм фен на истоически романи, а героите са толкова добре представени.

Както споменах, попринцип не сипадам по исторически романи. Може би е така, защото не бях попаднал на правилния досега. Този промени погледа ми върху този жанр и като цяло върху историята. Би могъл да бъде използван като пример за това, че исторята не е нужно да е скучна.

Грабналото ме нещо тук бе сюжета. Всички сме учили за царовете Симеон и Петър до някаква степен. В моя случай не са изучавани толкова подробно, но тук определено е наблегнато върху детайлите. Всичко е свързано и се случва поради някаква причина. Героите постоянно изпадат в трудни ситуации, развиват се и е толкова лесно да си се представиш на тяхно място.

Стила на писане e изключително приятен и увлекателен. В такива книги или ти става интересно от първата страница, или ти доскучава и затваряш книгата. Тук авторката е постигнала първото. Щом започнах книгата не исках да я оставя. Два или три дни подред стояк до късните часове на нощта. Или пък ми се случва нещо по-лошо - изпускам си спирката на метрото. Точно такива книги обичам. Людмила Филипова вече определено е сред любимите ми автори.

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

Have you read "The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey? If you haven't come back once you've read it.

If you haven't read "The Infinite Sea" yet the review will be spoiler-free.

I have been waiting for this book to come out for a long time. I read the prequel back in January I think and that cliffhanger just lurked me until I read this one.

I received this book on September 26th I started and finished it on the following day. It was so interesting and gripping that I couldn't put it down. It picks up where we left off and we get to see our favourite characters and we're introduced to some new ones.

Did I love this book? Not necessarily, but it was as good as I expected and I really enjoyed it. So many things happen and at the end you just don't know what and who to trust. The characters were just so realistic and relate-able. They were so believable and I just could help but love Cassie even more.

I also liked how it was thought-provoking, considering in this book happened a lot less things as opposed to the previous, 500-page book. The stakes got higher and things tighten even more and I felt I got more questions rather than answers but, hey, as long as there are answers in the next book I am okay.

My main problem was there wasn't enough of Cassie. She was there like half the book. There is a lot of action and plot twists. But the biggest one was not connected to Cassie but to Ringer. It is about the aliens and it's really mind-blowing. It just puts everything into question.

The characters develop but not as much as they did in the previous book. As I said there was, indeed, a lot of action but I felt something was missing. Maybe it's because the character's have changed enough in the prequel.

Also, there were lots of feels in this book. Like I was constantly nervous if someone will die. Rick somehow managed to emotionally drain me. Of course, this didn't stopped me from reading the book in less than six hours.

The writing was almost flawless. I could easily put myself into the character's shoes but sometimes I found some descriptions unnecessary. There is so much one can learn from this book. There are so many quotes and powerful messages.

Overall, it was a fast-paced book, filled with action and jaw-dropping twists. If you are like me and you liked the first book I can assure you won't be let down by this one and everything you know will be put into question.

REVIEW:

It was so bittersweet reading this book. It made me cry and laugh and kept me on the edge of my seat. I had put the bar high and Jennifer somehow got even further by making it one of the most satisfying conclusions to a series. Everything wrapped-up nice and logically. This is why I love the author, she manages to give the fans all they want and yet surpassing their expectations.

The plot was so well-thought out and laid out. There was a lot of action, kissing(it's a Jennifer L. Armentrout's book), character development and plot development. The writer somehow manages to put just about enough of everything so that you don't get bored.

Speaking of character development no-one can deny that is here. Katy is one of my most favourite and relatable character. She changed so much from the first book in a good direction. The fact that she's a blogger inspired me to continue blogging. I loved how she compared her world to the ones in the dystopian books she reads because that will be going through my mind too.

The writing was astonishing as always. The comparisons and the non-mistakable points of view were top-notch. The dialogue was real and not intimidating. I have to congratulate Jennifer for making me feel all kinds of emotions whilst reading her books. Good job.

"Opposition" is the epic conclusion to the "LUX" series and it is a swoon-worthy read that will keep you in tension while making you smile and cry at the same time. If you are yet to read/buy this book make sure to participate in the giveaway that my fellows and I are holding.

So today I decided to start my new section on the blog called "Wrap-Up". As you can guess it's about the books I've read this month. I'll also be posting about the book-to-movie adaptation that I watched + some other books.

Let's jump into it. This month was pretty successful for me because I managed to read SEVEN books. I know it might not sound as much but put in school and some other time-consuming things and you get a mess...

So first up I have

1. THE GIVER by Luis Lowry

Synopsis:

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Overall, I liked this book, even though I had some issues with it. But given the fact it is one of the first dystopian novels I can get over it. Plus there was the film that fixed my problems with the book. It was different but in a good way.

2. THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas

Synopsis:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

I really enjoyed this book. It was action-packed with a mystery but the pacing is slow for me. Except that I liked the book.

3. WHITE HOT KISS by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

It's no secret I am a Jennifer L. Armentrout fan. I have loved the LUX series and this series is awesome... This book was so fast-paced and action-packed and was written so well... Congrats Jennifer, You've impressed me, again!

4. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Synopsis:

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young "star-cross'd lovers" whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families.

This book... aghhh. I want to forget about reading it. It was cringe-worthy and stupid. I get that it is a tragedy and about star-crossed lovers but come on. When you're sixteen you'd know better than to kill yourself just because you can't be with the girl you met a few days ago. I am all for romance but what was this build up for? It wuld have a much stornger impact on me if it wasn't taking place in a few days. Few months, okay. Weeks, oh well, I can get over it but not in a few days. I am going to shut up now.

5. MR MERCEDES by Stephen King

Synopsis:

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

This book is weird.... Like all of King's books. It's a mystery but not in the way you think . It is compelling yet at moments I feels like some parts of the books could have been cut out but well, it's King. I enjoyed this books and I could really relate to the characters.

6. THE INFINITE SEA by Rick Yancey

Synopsis:

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

This book left me speechless., literally. I read it for about 5 or 6 hours. It's the continuation of "THE 5th WAVE" . It was interesting, left me wandering about a lot things but I didn't love it as much as I did the previous one.

7. REBOOT by Amy Tintera

Synopsis:

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

This book is so awesome. It had all the elements I want in a story - romance, gripping plot and fast-pacing. The characters are so cool. I loved pretty much everything about this book. The only thing was bugging me was the fact I felt it too familiar.

This was for the books I read. Now let's go to the adaptations.

I know "The Giver" was released back in August in the US but here, in Bulgaria, it came out on September 5th, This is weird considering we've always gotten the movies on time. I LOVED the movie.

Next, "The Maze Runner" came out too which I enjoyed but it wasn't something memorable. I am not saying it was bad by all means but I felt I've watched it already(I have NOT read the book).

I know it's not book related but I wanted to say that I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying fr Jules Bianchi to get better and survive after that incident. My thoughts are with him.

When most people hear of horror novels/stories the first name that comes up is Stephen King. Today he turns 67. For these sixty-seven years he's written over fifty books and hundreds short stories. He's sold more than 350 000 000 copies and this data comes from 8 years ago.

His books have been adapted to TV shows(Under The Dome) and movies(Carrie, It) and actually Marvel is to adapt "The Dark Tower" novels into comic-books.

He's my favourite horror author and I pay a lot respect to him.

Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine. He turns 67 years old today.

I read "The 5th Wave a while back and I loved it. It was a very good concept and was very realistic. I just loved Cassie. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
