Taiwan Trip Day 1

I recently went for a trip to Taiwan. It was a couples trip sans kids. Although I missed them immensely, it was good to take a break from work and kids once in a while.

The flight took more than 4 hours. The first thing most tourists to Taiwan did was to swiftly move on to a special counter to obtain a Taiwan mobile number. It makes communication easier locally and you can use mobile data with no worries at a reasonable price. Or you can do like me, I applied for free 3G micro sim card through this Digital Tour Buddy programme at the Youth Travel in Taiwan website. But you must apply for it one month prior to your tour date. About 10 days before my tour date, I received an email approval from them and collect the sim card when I arrived to Taiwan. The sim card comes with a loaded value of NT$50 but if you feel that it's not sufficient, you can always top it up. The sim card is only for receiving and making calls only. Lucky for me, my brother in-law applied for a Taiwan mobile number. So we all shared his mobile data. Taiwan's mobile data is pretty fast and good. You won't encounter much problems with the reception and speed of the data even at the highlands. Telecommunications is highly important for us when we're in Taiwan because I need to keep in touch with my kids constantly.

It's their winter season now and the night is longer. When we arrived at our first stop and that is Jiufen (九份), the sun had already set. The sun sets about slightly pass 5pm when we were there. So plan your activities well and try to accomplish everything before the sun sets during winter season. Otherwise, you'll either have to return to hotel or visit night markets earlier.

Our first stop is Jiufen.

Jiufen is a nice place to visit. A must-visit place, I should say. Nice scenery, there's old streets to walk around, lots of things to see and eat. It's a tourist spot so it can be crowded at Jiufen Old Street.

We went to another shop which have seats and tried their braised pork rice and huge fishballs. The braised pork rice is not the best I've tasted. The best is still in Ximending, Taipei.

Joseph's First Kindy Concert

Joseph had his first kindy concert not too long ago. Since I shared big sister's concert before, it's only fair that I share his too. He didn't seem too happy at first when I dropped him off at kindy. They had to put on their costume first and the teacher will ferry them to the concert venue to have their last rehearsal before the parents arrive. We arrived at the concert venue very early to get good seats.

He's not very happy!

I was crossing my fingers that he will be fine during his performance and save me from embarrassment. Haha. To my relief, it was a ok! *peace sign*

Ahoy Mateys! (Puppet Craft)

It has been some time since I last did craft with the kids. I was inspired by a puppet craft I saw on Pinterest and also the kids like pirate stuff. That is how the pirate puppet craft came to be. This craft needs toilet paper roll, a nifty idea to recycle and ahem..actually to reduce my ever growing collection of toilet paper rolls in the house. It's going to invade my kids cupboard very soon!

Ok swaying back to the topic, this pirate puppet craft will be fun to make considering how cute they look and it's really not hard to do.

You will need the following for the girl puppet:

1. 1 toilet paper roll.

2. Orange paper since I don't have beige.

3. Yellow paper for the hair or whichever hair colour you fancy.

4. Some cloth from any old clothes that you can't fit anymore.

5. Black magic pen.

6. 2 googly eyes.

Draw a straight line on the piece of orange paper and cut according to the line. The strip of orange paper should be a wide strip to make up the face of the puppet.

Use the glue and paste the strip of orange paper around the top of the toilet paper roll.

Measure the remaining bottom part of the toilet paper roll so that you can the length accordingly on the cloth. Paste the cloth around the bottom of the toilet roll.

Stick the two googly eyes then draw the nose and mouth with the black magic pen.

Using the toilet paper roll, trace a circle and cut it. Paste the circle right on top of the head to cover the hole.

Cut strips of yellow paper about 1cm wide and paste it on the head to make the hair.

And voila! The girl puppet.

You will need the following for the boy puppet:

1. 1 toilet paper roll

2. Orange paper

3. Black felt

4. Cloth for the top and pants

5. 2 googly eyes

6. Black magic pen

7. White paper

Repeat the same steps as the girl puppet for the face and clothes. Only difference is the puppet has a top and pants now.

Do the same for the googly eyes and face. This time the pirate has a moustache.

Draw a skull with two bones on a white paper and cut it out. Cut a shape of a pirate on the black felt. You need two pieces to wrap around the puppet's head. Glue the skull and bones onto the hat. And the pirate puppet is ready!

So two down for my toilet paper roll collection and the kids get to do puppet shows, a fun extension of pretend play which can hone some important learning skills like communication skills, social skills, creative skills and language skills. Now excuse me while I go watch their show. ;)

Just Singing

Hello there! I am still here. Having a blogger's block recently and suddenly decided to share some videos for a start.

The kids love it when I borrow nursery rhyme books from the library. I will sing to them or they will sing-along and sometimes do a performance for me. The fact that I haven't been recording a video of them of late, I thought I should wake my lazy bones up and record their performance before they're all grown up. Kids really grow up so fast, don't you think?

Proud Of My Girl

Yesterday my daughter brought back her results for her Chinese test. I didn't even know it's exam time, yo! Nor does Elizabeth knows it's exam time too. We were very sick one week and she missed school for a few days. So maybe she might have missed the announcement.

Anyway, I'm so proud that I had to include the event of this proud moment in my blog. She got 100% for her Chinese test. From a girl who speaks English at home, I think she's done a great job. We were worried and she was also worried herself that she would face difficulty in school. But she made it. I'm so happy for her.

I went through her paper and I can only read some of the Chinese characters. She can read all. Now, she's officially better than me. Haha. I hope it's a smooth journey for her from now in her Chinese subject. :)

Fun At Euro Fun Park

My kids have not been to a fun fair before. So when we heard there was a fun fair nearby, we went there spontaneously. Euro Fun Park is the name and according to their website, www.eurofunpark.com, they are the biggest traveling fair in Malaysia adopting the latest European ride technology. They are now at the car park of the Bukit Jalil stadium and it's close to home which is more accessible for us. Pardon me if the photos are not taken well. I left my camera at home and although I had to use my Samsung Galaxy SIII, I'm not that good at taking photos using my mobile phone.

The kids went crazy when they saw what was awaiting them as they were nearing the entrance. We were pretty impressed to see how large the Ferris wheel was and couldn't wait to see what else was installed for us.

The entrance fee to enter Euro Fun Park and on top of that you have to buy tokens to play the rides! Not cheap I tell ya.

A fun fair wouldn't be complete if there's not one game stall right? So many game stalls here. Close to 15 stalls if I recall correctly.

It was a big fun fair and we're impressed with the quality and condition of the rides. Not old and dirty. Quite your money's worth although it's a tad expensive. That's the only complain we have. Maybe that's the price we have to pay to get that standard. Although it would be better if the price is lower. So if you want to go there, choose your rides wisely. :) And I heard it will be around until end of this month.

Elizabeth was not satisfied as she intended to go on more rides actually. As we were leaving, Joseph said "Bye bye, fun fair!" He must be satisfied. :)

Impromptu Art Lesson Again

As mentioned before my children do not go for formal art lessons. Now that Elizabeth is in Standard 1, they have art subject once every week. So far, the art she took home are very simple drawings and colourings using colour pencils. Then I noticed each time she gets a B for her drawings and I began to realise that maybe the problem lies with her colouring which is flat and there's no shadings. This calls for me to try my hand in teaching her basic shading using colour pencils.

I drew a picture of a bowling pin, a girl and a tree. Then I demonstrated to her how to do shading using just one colour for the bowling pin and got her to finish the rest of the bowling pin herself. Basically, I just taught her to use more pressure when colouring the darkest shade and release the pressure slightly as she move on to the lighter shade. So as to create a darker to lighter perspective.

Then we moved on to the girl and lastly the tree. This time applying different colours like dark green and light green for the tree.

I'm not the best teacher for art, haha. But hopefully she will learn and remember to apply it for her school art lessons next time. Good luck, sweetie.

Joseph on the other hand, will always request for a chance to splash some paint whenever he sees his sister is doing art too.

Art Lesson

I did not sign up my kids for any formal art lessons. Maybe I don't want to burden my daughter with too many classes since she is already taking up piano and ballet. There's plenty of resources from the internet and I found this Colourwheel Clown Art Project to introduce the colour wheel to my kids.

First, you find a white card paper. I use a paper plate actually and cut it into a circle and then I drew the lines myself.

Then I asked them to paint the primary colours first. Red, yellow and blue on every alternate pizza slices leaving the other slices empty first.

Next, I get them to mix the colours on a palette. Red + yellow = orange. So we paint the pizza slice in between the red and yellow, orange. Blue + yellow = green. Blue + red = purple. Same goes to the other slices.

I then get them to paste the colour wheel on a art paper. Right in the middle. The colour wheel will be the body. Then the kids will have to paint out the face, hands and legs according to their imagination.

Joseph's masterpiece. That naughty boy just wouldn't leave the clown alone. He enjoyed making it messy.

So that's one project you can do with your kids. Teaching art and some bonding time as well. You can introduce patterns as well like polka dots or stripes to the clown's socks if you like.

Reading Is A Good Habit

Yes, reading is a good habit right? My girl is quite a bookworm and now my boy has more interest in books compared to before. Hopefully he will become a bookworm like his sister also. Maybe he will once he knows how to read more words.

Eep, I'm A Year Older

Yesterday was my birthday and although we always convince ourselves that age is just a number, we all wish that we could be 16 all over again right? Never mind, age gracefully as they say. ;)

We did the usual like singing the birthday song, cutting the birthday cake and dinner celebration. It's like any other usual day, I still went to work, my kids still drive me up the wall sometimes although they did some sweet things for me too and hubby helped with more chores. :) I don't intend to post any birthday celebration pictures because they didn't turn out quite nice. But instead here is a birthday note from my sweet daughter and a funny video of Joseph.

This CNY and Potty Training Updates

Many people asked me how was my CNY after I returned to work. I just told them it was ok. But in reality, it was actually horrible. But how can I say that because that would only encourage them further to ask me to elaborate. Obviously, I won't mention it also here but yeah there you go. It was a horrible CNY for me. I just wish I could turn back the hands of time but what is done cannot be undone.

I'm not sure what this post is going to be about. But maybe I should move on to other brighter things or just share some pictures.

On another good note, Joseph has been diaper less throughout the night already! It could be between the mid of January to the beginning of February. A major feat for him and we're very proud of him considering how reluctant he was with the idea at the beginning of potty training. And how he likes to poo once we slip on the diapers for the night. He was already without the diaper during daytime and nap time for quite some time already. Then we realised that on some nights he's diaper was completely dry. That's when we decided to try taking him off the diaper at night and see how it goes. So far there were only two or three series of unwanted occurrences. It's been all good. Cross my fingers. Well, potty training is all about hits and misses. All we need is patience and no pressure. Joseph is 3 years and 7 months.

Trip to Legoland Malaysia

I'm sure most of you know that we can find a lot of 'Kids Go For Free' voucher to Legoland Malaysia last year right? I'm not sure whether these vouchers are still available this year. But I got mine through Toys R Us, Munchy's biscuits and Dutch Lady's milk packet drinks. Wanting to make full use of those vouchers before it expires, we made a trip to Legoland Malaysia end of last year.

Prior to the trip, the kids already knew about the trip to Legoland Malaysia. They were so excited and they kept harassing me with questions like 'how many days more?' Haha. As the trip was at the end of the year that also means rainy season. So it was not a surprise that the weather started out cloudy that day. I was praying hard that it would not rain. We woke up early that day and after the buffet breakfast at the hotel, we left for Legoland Malaysia. We arrived so early, 1 hour before its operation hours(10.30am). Sounds 'kiasu' right? LOL. It wasn't on purpose but we started the journey early just in case we got lost. The pros for arriving early were the queue..there were none! Haha. Also we got to take our own sweet time for toilet breaks and take some pictures before charging in. But when the opening time was drawing near, the crowd became bigger and people were already lining up to go in.

Kids already running in even though we were early. The parking lot was quite far and you have to walk quite a distance. So many ticket counters to accommodate when the crowd is big.

The first thing we did when we entered was to obtain the Park Map then we proceeded to the rental counter to rent a twin stroller for the children if they get tired. But even before the trip, I've already surfed their official website at www.legoland.com.my to get more information, look at their map and plan the activities. The children had their first ride at the Junior Driving School and Driving School. This is a very popular ride so do this ride first before the queue gets freaking long.

Joseph enjoyed himself immensely at Junior Driving School. I think he went on the ride 4-5 times, I've also lost count. LOL. He was so happy that he could finally drive a car after being rejected at Kidzania. Cheers to Legoland Malaysia.

Elizabeth however had a bit of difficulty at Driving School. Too many roads and road signs maybe? Rules to abide? She's a girl after all. Her cousin brother, Han Yang seems to be doing better.

There were many interesting Lego creations around the park like the one at the picture above. It's Legoland after all, land of many many Legos. Haha. Too many that I didn't bother to take every single one otherwise this blog post will be too long. The Technic Twister Ride at the picture above is a very common ride in theme parks like those spinning cups. Suitable for young children although I'm not saying adults can go on the ride. Ahem!

The weather at this point was unpredictable. One minute it was sunny and one minute it was gloomy again. Thank goodness even if it was sunny, the sun wasn't scorching my skin. The Aquazone Wave Racers Ride looked like an interesting ride but too bad I didn't give it a try because Elizabeth chickened out and Joseph's height was not eligible for the ride. As you can see from the picture, the queue was getting longer by the minute. There were two islands for this ride and I don't understand why only one island was open even though the queue was getting longer. A lot of time wasted just queuing. The management should have opened the second island then it would make the queue move faster.

It was a relieved to enter the LEGO Academy as it was an indoor area and air conditioned. Good to get away from the heat for a while and cool down the body. We can build whatever we want in LEGO Academy and even proudly display our creations at their display area.

Then we headed on to another area of the theme park called LEGO Kingdoms. There we went to The Forestmen's Hideout (picture above). It's like a multi level playground so of course the children will enjoy. But make sure you keep an eye on your kids as they can get lost easily. It's a hideout anyway so you can expect them to hide away from you. Maybe I'm just paranoid after so many lost children cases.

Royal Joust Ride is suitable for younger children. They liked it and went on it twice. Merlin's Challenge Ride is a common ride at theme parks too. It can get too fast and I can see that Joseph was a bit terrified with the speed.

I think there was nothing at Castle Stage but it is good background for photo opportunities though. Elizabeth enjoyed herself with Gong gong on Kids Power Tower Ride where you have to pull yourself up the tower with the rope.

We spent a lot of time at Build and Test when it started to pour. What a bummer. Then papa and the kids went on the DUPLO Express Ride and DUPLO Playtown while the rest of us went for a 4D movie experience at LEGO Studios. The kids still couldn't get over their 'scary' experience at Shrek 4D in Universal Studios Singapore. LOL.

The 4D move at Lego Studios were actually very kid friendly. The seats were stationary unlike the ones in USS. And there's no ticklish feeling like something is crawling up your legs too. LOL. It's all wind, rain or snow. No fire. That's why it's kid friendly in my opinion and the movies are not scary too. But still after much persuasion, the kids refuse to go and I can't force them right?

The movies available at Lego Studios. Take your pick or if you don't mind the queue, queue for all movies! LOL. Observation Tower and Beetle Bounce, common theme park rides too.

These three kiddos enjoyed it so much that they asked for a second round.

Surprisingly, Elizabeth enjoyed the Beetle Bounce ride a lot. I didn't put high hopes and thought I would have to calm two crying children after the ride. But it turns out I only have to calm one crying child after the ride (Joseph!) LOL. I think his experience would have been better if he had not been separated with his cousins during the ride. He didn't like the squirmish feeling in the stomach when the beetle bounced down I guess.

I heard Legoland is not Legoland if there's no Miniland. Mini replicas for you to 'wow' at. The Petronas Twin Towers looked like the real deal at one glance right?

Pharaoh's Revenge is an indoor playground. Lost Kingdom Adventure is a ride where you can find for lost treasure with the laser gun.

Legoland Express is a good way to hitch a ride around Legoland Malaysia just for the fun of it. Rescue Academy needs good team work. The parents can pump the lever to make the fire engine move and the children can spray water from the hose to the building to put out the fire. Parents can really burn a lot of calories for this ride man..phew!

Lego City Airport is another common theme park ride but still fun for younger children. Something new here is the boating school where you can maneuver and press the pedal to move the boat. Nice experience. Finally, I took a picture of the Lego Christmas tree. I'm not sure whether it is originally not lighted or it was because it was already closing time. Many people were seen spending a lot of time in the shops to buy some souvenirs or Lego toys before leaving the place. We were one of them...guilty as charged. Hehe. So go to Legoland Malaysia! I'm sure your children will enjoy it and you will not regret it..;)

Bento Workshop

This is an overdue post but I'll just talk about it anyway for memories sake. Last December, I signed up for a Bento workshop since it was the school holidays. Joseph was too young to join so I only brought Elizabeth along. I was searching for information on a preschool and it brought me to this website www.kidsdreamwork.com That's when I found out that the blog owner, Goh Ai Ping was an avid bento maker and she also started conducting some bento workshops. I was interested at once and signed up for one of her Christmas Themed Bento Workshops.

Elizabeth was excited to go to the workshop and actually she was not the only one. I was excited too. Haha. It was a small group of us as it was nearing Christmas and most people are away for holidays. Ai Ping was a very nice and pleasant instructor. She made sure we understand and follow her workshop at a comfortable pace.

It was interesting and fun to learn how to do a bento and I think anybody can do it. You just need to be creative and have a lot of patience! Haha. I don't think I will have the patience to do it everyday as it can be quite tedious especially when you have pay attention to tiny details like doing the eyes or mouth. Children would enjoy doing it too. It's like playtime for them!

After doing the bento herself, she was quite anxious to try eating it. That's why bento works for some kids right? Hehe. To make it as appealing and appetising as can be right? The best is I made her happy that day. :)

I've bought some stuff for bento making actually before attending the workshop but I haven't gotten around to do it. After attending this bento workshop, I am inspired and I think I know where and how to start and go about it now..:)

Playdough Activities 3

It's been a while since we've done any playdough activity. Then one fine day as Joseph was looking for snacks to munch in the kitchen cabinet, he discovered the playdough I kept in there. And then it's playdough time again.

Joseph was as usual with his abstract creations and Elizabeth came up with two interesting playdough creation all by herself.

Anyway, off topic here. Some updates on my children progress in school. Elizabeth doesn't cry anymore. Phew! That's my big girl. Everything's fine and dandy for now. Cross my fingers and toes.

Today morning, I went to speak with Joseph's class teacher for a while when I dropped him off at school. I accompanied him into his class and as soon as he saw his classmates, he greeted them, "Hello!" He sounded like a celebrity addressing his fans. LOL. His classmates were a bit stunned. Then I told him that I gotta go and he casually said, "Bye!" So I'm a bit baffled about his crying drama over the last few days. I asked his class teacher about it and she said that he is very ok in class. The headmistress also said that as soon as he entered the class, he would start playing with his friends. They said that it's a normal thing when they see other children cry, they will follow suit or maybe he just wants to be manja with me. Hmph! This boy is just crying in front of me when I drop him off but as soon as he enters the class, he's all good. I feel that he is just a drama king! Maybe I should sign him up for acting or drama class next time. LOL. So another headache and mystery solved, I hope!

Drawing Circles

My little boy Joseph can draw circles already! You know with two kids in tow, sometimes some minor milestones nearly go unnoticed. Especially with the second child. The first child usually gets more observation from us because back then, we only have one child to look after.

Anyways, when did he started drawing circles, I'm not sure. But all of a sudden that day he whipped out his doodle toy and started drawing circles. Then he proudly showed it to me saying, "Mummy! Look, circle!" What else, I whipped out my camera lah. The doodle toy comes together with a book. He tried to copy the picture with quite an impressive outcome. Considering he hardly draws at home. From my recollection, I think his sister draws more at his age.

Then big sister wants attention and wants to join in too. So she started drawing space like planets and stars. She requested for her picture to be taken also. LOL. Kids, always want attention from their parents huh?

This is her version of Earth, Saturn and Moon. Hehe.

Now with other planets and stars even snowflakes. Look! She even wrote her name in chinese. I'm so proud of her. Thanks to Papa for making her practice during the holidays before school starts.

On the other hand, Joseph's potty training has shown progress despite me being lazier the second time around. I was not as hard on him as I was with his sister. I haven't been using a diaper during his afternoon nap for already a few months. I didn't keep track of how many months exactly. He can now go to the bathroom to pee and even flush by himself.

There's good news too in the poo project. It's been a few months too that he is brave enough to tell us he wants to poo. Now he sits on his throne with an additional baby toilet seat on the toilet bowl. Poos without fuss now. Previously, he used to be scared of the toilet bowl and wants to quickly come down. He used to suppress his poo from coming out too and waits until we put on his diaper at night, then he'll do his business. Got me so frustrated. Now when I put him up on his throne to poo, he'll say, "Mummy go, don't see me!" And I'll just leave him alone until he calls me to clean up for him. How cute and konon like an adult. As for the night time diapers, I still don't have the confidence to let him be diaper free. Some night he's dry but some nights his diaper is still wet. I hope diaper free nights will be here soon.

Stepping Into Standard 1

I hope it's not too late to wish my readers a very Happy New Year and I hope everyone had a good start to the new year. I have been 'missing in action'. Maybe it's the holidays or maybe I've been experiencing a 'blogger's block'. LOL. Maybe it's the back-to-school chaos that's been happening. Elizabeth just started Standard 1 and Joseph just started kindy. I can't help thinking Elizabeth's is no longer a small baby anymore. My baby is in Standard 1 now! Boo hoo. So what's up in my life recently? Preparing them for school. From uniforms to bags to water bottle! My husband and I took a few days off from work to be with them.

So how did your children fare on their first day of school? Elizabeth did fine during the 1 day orientation and I thought I could breathe a sigh of relief. We did a trial run on that day. Woke her up, bathed, brush teeth, gave her breakfast, all the works. During orientation, the children went for a visit to their classes and around the school while parents listened to briefings by the headmistress, school chairman and head of the Parent Teachers Association. She did fine on that day.

Then the real day came. She told me the night before that she doesn't want to go to school. I asked her why. She said that she's scared of the teacher. I said I don't see anything wrong with the teacher and she seemed nice. She said she was a little fierce at one point. But I told her that sometimes the teacher may seemed fierce just because they raise their voice. They have to raise their voice because they otherwise not everybody can hear her. That explanation was not enough apparently because she got teary eyed when she entered the school. Great scott! We even made it into Sin Chew's newspaper! LOL. History repeats itself. Her crying days in kindy are back? And I thought having Aiman, her good friend in kindy who is in the same class as her in Standard 1(what a coincident!) can make her feel better. She cried till day 4 of school and finally on day 5 it stopped. Thank God. I pray that this crying ordeal will be finally over.

In a better mood already. Recess time with her meal. I catered food with the canteen first. See how it goes first then decide later once everything's more settled.

She's sitting right in front. An advantage for being one of the shortest in class? LOL.

On the other hand, Joseph fared well in school. He was all smiles on his first day. Thank God! Phew! He always came home tired. I wonder if school is that stressful or he played too hard. LOL. Poor baby. And as if like taking turns. Suddenly he started crying on the 4th and 5th day. He was doing good so far. So I don't understand why. The teacher said he was ok in school. Maybe reality has set in and he knows this is not playschool. Anyway, I pray hard that he'll get over this soon.

And you know what? Not only it'll be stressful for kids, it'll be a stressful journey for me now. What a bummer..hehe. With all the rush in the mornings, worry over their progress in school to making sure they get sufficient sleep. It's not easy for us mums huh? Now, I'm looking forward to the next school holidays. When is it? ;)

Singapore Day 4

Day 4 was also our last day spent in Singapore. We went to Singapore Zoo as it is close to Woodlands where my best friend stays. Singapore Zoo is also close to Singapore customs. So it's all on the way home to Malaysia.

The children started the day with a soak in the bath tub. LOL. Thank you, Kasie! It's their first time in a big bath tub so they are a bit excited and enjoyed the soak very much. :D

Moving on to Singapore Zoo. There's a lot of packages or combo as they call it for their admission fee. It depends whether you want to go on their tram ride or add on a boat ride too. Or you might just be comfortable walking around with that you just pay to enter. We chose the admission plus tram ride in the end. The zoo is quite big and you must obtain the map so it's easier to guide your way around. Taking the tram is also a wise decision especially for those who are traveling with senior citizens or young kids. You can hope on and hop off anytime. We hired the wagon for $15 also for the kids incase they get tired easily. The kids enjoyed it because it's something new to them.

Singapore Zoo opens at 8.30am. We were there late at about 10.30am and as a result we missed one of their Splash Safari show. :( So plan your trip well and go there early is best. Food is not a problem at the zoo too. Plenty of eateries there and we dined at KFC. There's two KFC in the zoo! I was so tempted to try Ben & Jerry's ice cream but because it was raining, I have to refrain myself. LOL.

One of their star attraction is the Rainforest Kidzworld. It's a good idea, like an area tailored for kids. My kids went on the pony ride, carousel ride and horse carriage ride there. There's many activities there. You can even go for water play but since we couldn't spend the whole day there, we didn't allow the kids to swim much to their dismay. The weather was also threatening and it rained a few times when we're there. By the way, the extra rides at this area are extra charges and not counted into the admission ticket.

We were able to catch two shows and that was the Animal Friends Show and Rainforest Fights Back Show. Oh and one more new experience was the Elephant Ride. It was my very first time and boy was I excited and scared at the same time. $8 for adult and $4 for child. Just imagine all four of us on the elephant (my mum didn't want to sit). We got to touch the elephant too and the kids were surprised to feel the elephant's skin.

When the Animal Friends show started, my kids were invited to come out and dance with the hosts. Joseph was a bit lost in the first picture and nearly walked to the back stage. I think he can't wait to see the animals. Haha.

A very short clip of the Rainforest Fights Back Show. It was to show that the Orang Utan can manage to break open a coconut just with his bare hands but a human can't do that. But too bad I only caught it after the coconut has been broken.

The last animal we saw was the white tiger that my hubby was so eager to see and then it poured heavily and we were forced to leave the zoo as it was getting late and we didn't want to be home in Melaka so late. We didn't get to finish the whole zoo. So be there early and you can spend the whole day there to finish the whole zoo. Oh well, there's always next time. Singapore Zoo: World's Best Rainforest Zoo. I think it really lives up to that standard. Worth a visit.

On our third day in Singapore, we went to Gardens by the Bay, Singapore's latest attraction. I thought it would be a lovely walk there especially for my mum and it was indeed quite lovely. We took the MRT there again. It's like our main mode of transport there. It was a quite a long journey there and the children were already getting restless. So in the end, we had to whip out our handphones and let them play games to occupy them. Practically everyone owns a smartphone. That is from what I observed when I ride on the MRTs. It is like a necessity and their way of life since they commute so much everyday. I see some of them listening to music, playing games or even watching dramas without a headphone, mind you!

How not to give them our phones to play? Just looks at the man beside Elizabeth, he's also busy with his phone. LOL.

The sun wasn't so hot when we arrived. It was quite a nice stroll on the boardwalk along the Dragonfly lake towards Gardens by the Bay ticketing counter. Nice scenery for photographic spot.

This calls for a family pic but Joseph had to ruin the picture. Cheeky boy. That's the Supertree Grove at the back.

Those are the 'Supertrees' called the Silver Leaf Garden and the two conservatories are at the back of it.

There were two conservatories, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. But we only went in to one, the Flower Dome because I heard that it's Autumn Harvest at the Flower Dome until 27 November 2012. It was during Halloween time so all kinds of pumpkins everywhere. Joseph so happy to be carried by Auntie Kasie.

As it is the Flower Dome, you'll be able to see all kinds of flowers suitable for flower lovers. Places for dining are also aplenty at Gardens by the Bay so you don't have to walk far for food.

Supertree Grove. You can see a walkway that you can walk from tree to tree. We didn't go up though as the sun was pretty hot that time.

After filling up our tummies, it was time to move on to Merlion Park. Your trip would not be complete if you don't visit the Merlion Park, so people say. To join in the crowd and make ourselves known as tourist in Singapore, we had to go to Merlion Park. Haha.

Then it was time to visit Marina Bay Sands Skypark. It's a good place to get a bird's eyeview of Singapore's skyline. Admission to the skypark is $20 for adults and $14 for kids. It's really so high up for those who have fear of heights but then the view is really beautiful. We had the day view but it should be also beautiful by night. Maybe next time we'll go at night.

We hanged around Marina Bay Sands and had our dinner there at their foodcourt. We already had plans to be entertained by Wonder Full, Marina Bay Sands water, light and sound show at the Event Plaza, Marina Bay Sands. They have shows at 8pm and 9.30pm. Of course we went for the 8pm one as we didn't want to go back so late considering the traveling time. Go there early to secure seats and it's best to get the seats in the middle and not too in front because there'll be fire display and you don't want to feel too much of the heat.

Go there to watch the whole show, I assure it's worth it and you will enjoy it just like we all did. My mum even thank me for bringing her to watch Wonder Full. That's how much she liked it. It looked like a more relaxing day with visits to Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park and Marina Bay Sands but it was a whole lot of walking actually! The children were so tired that they slept like a log and didn't want to wake up the next day. A memorable day too all in all. Day 4..we're going to the zoo!

A Little Bird Told Me

Fresh from our Singapore trip, Elizabeth drew a picture and I was pretty impressed with it. She must be in the mood because she doesn't draw everyday. Usually her drawings are very basic and simple like stickman, people, bird, house or building. She drew birds also but this time a more complex one which took me by surprise.

Singapore Day 2

Continuation from my first day in Singapore, this is my account on my second day in Singapore. This is the day we spent our whole day in Universal Studios Singapore (USS). With already the two free adult tickets I won, I only need to buy a senior ticket for my mum and a child ticket for Elizabeth. Joseph entered free! Child tickets only starts from 4 years old to 12 years old. So I already purchased the tickets in advanced online. That way, I don't have to queue twice for tickets and another time to enter.

The famous spot to take photos and tell everyone that we were at USS and have conquered the place.

It was a Monday when we entered USS but I was surprised to see the crowd! I thought it would be fine during the weekday but I guess my expectation was wrong. Maybe it would be better if we went on a Tuesday. Anyway, too late for regrets. One advice though, if you're going to USS with children, be sure to wake up early because you need time to travel there and you want to be there at the opening hour. So you can have your money's worth and ride as many rides your want there. You have to consider the time consumed in queing for a ride. The time queing is even longer than the ride itself!

The first thing we did as soon as we entered USS was to rent a stroller. Single stroller for $10. It came in handy as my prince was unwell that day. So at least we had the stroller for him to rest when he was feeling tired or cranky. Don't forget also to get the map of USS as soon as you enter. It serves as a good guide and you can plan ahead.

Marilyn Monroe and Woody Woodpecker was there to greet us near the entrance at 'The Walk of Fame', Hollywood Street. But we were already late so we didn't stop by to have pictures with them thinking we could do it later. Our first stop was at 'Madagascar' and we took the Madagascar: A Crate Adventure ride. It was the first ride so the kids were pretty excited. Moreover Elizabeth can see her favourite characters from Madagascar movie. This ride is suitable for young children.

Carousel will always be a hit with the children. That's why we had to go on King Julien's Beach Party-Go-Round just for their sake. There was also Madagascar Boogie, a street entertainment. So everyone can 'move it, move it'! Our tummys were growling already so we had our lunch at Marty's Casa Del Wild. There's a few set lunches for you to choose.

Then we're off to a land Far Far Away. The first thing we saw was the long queue for Enchanted Airways. It's a good thing my children were not into roller coasters otherwise I would be turning green from riding it. Although it is just a junior roller coaster, I'm really not keen. Age has something to do with my level of interest I guess. LOL. And of course, the Far Far Away castle is a crowd puller as well. Many people wanted to take a picture in front of the castle including yours truly. I was thrilled to enter the Shrek 4-D Adventure but had to pull out halfway through because my children got frightened especially my daughter who begged us to take her out. The poor girl thought there were real spiders crawling up her feet and that's exactly why you should go for this because it's so real! If it weren't for my children, I would've sat all the way through. A must-go! If you are bringing young children, you may opt for the stationary seats but you can still 'feel' the action. Trust me!

Elizabeth was drawn to the Magic Potion Spin, a mini ferris wheel for children. Thank goodness something to divert her attention. Otherwise, I don't know what would've calmed her down from all the action. She even sat twice on this ferris wheel.

Next we went to The Lost World. By then, Joseph fell asleep in the stroller, so he did not ride Dino-Soarin'. It's a kiddie ride and it's quite common in theme parks. There's one similar to this in Genting themepark and Sunway Lagoon too.

We wanted to go for the WaterWorld show but they were on their break so we headed over to Ancient Egypt first to be Treasure Hunters. No, we did not go for Revenge of the Mummy if you wanted to know. LOL. The entrance to it is enough to scare me away. After what I've heard about it..nope..it's not for the faint hearted. But for you thrill seekers out there, I would say go for it!

The magnificent and eerie at the same time entrance to Revenge of the Mummy. Feels like I'm in Egypt right? Hehe.

We headed back to The Lost World because the WaterWorld show was going to commence soon and we didn't want to miss it for sure. Definitely well worth it and it was good that we didn't miss this show. It's based on the movie WaterWorld starring Kevin Costner. The set itself was impressive not forgetting the death-defying stunts, explosions and water splashes at this 'live' show. My mum enjoyed it but she didn't want to get wet so we had the option to choose the higher seats. There were indications to the seats where we were warned before hand that we will get wet during the show if we chose those seats. So if you're prepared to get wet, do remember to bring extra clothes or ponchos are available at their stores.

This is why you will get wet if you chose the 'wet' seats. And the actors are so expert and professional that their aims are always so accurate!

Joseph so interested in the show that he didn't want to sit down. Boys will be boys. They like action shows.

After the show, we went on to Sci-Fi City and it really looks very techy there. If there's such a word! Maybe it's because of the double roller coaster there. Our mission in this city was actually to go for the Transformers The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle. Yep, you heard it right. I braved myself for this ride because I knew it wasn't a roller coaster. I dragged my husband in since he's a Transformer fan and we used the Universal Express pass here. So that the children and my mum won't have to wait for long. The ride was so good that I felt like I was on a roller coaster! LOL. The effects were good and you can 'feel' the action too like water spraying or the heat from a fire. If it wasn't because my hubby felt quesy after ride, I might have gone in for a second round. Too bad I couldn't take any picture during the ride.

It was time for us to call it a day and it was closing to dinner time too. So the last stop was at New York street where we bought some souvenirs and took photos with Bert from Sesame Street and Kungfu Panda! So we left with beautiful memories of USS and might return someday when the children are bigger. ;)

Happy Birthday Elizabeth!

Elizabeth is 6 years old today! I went to her kindy this morning to celebrate her birthday with her classmates. Remember last year's celebration where I got her two princess cakes that turned out to be so hilarious? Well, this year I got her ice-cream cakes I got it from Living Social. It was a good deal but turns out that 1kg is probably not enough for a class of 21 children. LOL. You know how children will react when they hear the words "ice-cream"!

This year, I haven't got much time to handmade the goody bag. I only managed to do it for her 4 years old birthday celebration. So again this year, the goody bag was store bought and Elizabeth specifically told me that she wants princess goody bags. The contents this year had an additional something special. I did chocolate truffles for the first time. Taste turns out ok but the look is something I think I need to work on. Anyway, I hope the kids will like it.

Here's what you need for the chocolate truffles:
250g chocolate chips (I used a packet of VanHouten chocolate chips)
6 tbsp whipping cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
30g butter
Cocoa powder
Sprinkles

1. Pour the chocolate chips into a bowl. Add the whipping cream, vanilla and butter. Put the bowl over a pan of simmering water to melt the chocolate. Don't forget to stir. It will look like this.

2. Then let the chocolate mixture cool. After that, put it in the freezer. Stir every 5 minutes until the mixture is thick.

3. For each truffle, roll a teaspoon of the mixture into a ball in your hands. You have to be quick as it melts easily. A trick I discovered is to wipe your hands off the excess mixture sticking on your hands every time after you make it into a ball. Then it will be easier to make the next ball.

4. Then roll it in cocoa powder or sprinkles.

You can lay the truffles on baking parchment and store in the fridge for up to a week.

In the end, it's all about our child's happiness right? The twinkle in her eye and her face lights up when I arrived today. It made me feel happy that I've done my part as a mother. In a blink of an eye, she's 6 years old today. I still can't believe that she's entering another important phase in her life next year..starting primary school! Just thinking about it makes me anxious.

At night after work, we'll usually have our tradition of singing the birthday song and cutting the cake. The birthday girl was very excited and happy. It should be a good day for her and hopefully many many more happy returns of the day for her!

Singapore Day 1

What do you when you win two adult tickets to Universal Studios Singapore? You start planning for a trip to Singapore. Woo hoo! I won it from a Maybank contest during the Barbie event just so you know. We decided to drive to Singapore and we found that it was not a hassle to drive there. Just drive through the booths at the Singapore Customs and get your passport stamped. Then proceed along the red lane to park your car and get the autopass card. This autopass card is a must to be used at ERPs or even car parks. It costs $10 with $6 for deposit and store-in value of $4 which is not enough. So be sure to top it up at the nearest 7-11 shop that you can find. Otherwise there'll be a penalty of $10 when you leave Singapore if there's no sufficient amount left on the card.

My best friend lives in Singapore. So we're very fortunate to stay at her place. It's an excuse for me to meet her and spend some precious, quality time with her. Not only we save a bit money on lodging but we get a feel of living a Singaporean life in her home and also learn the ways of travelling by MRT and bus from her home to our destination and back to her home. Daily parking at her apartment as a visitor is not free though. Nothing is free in this world eh? LOL.

After we have somewhat settled down and load down our luggages, the first place we went was to ION Orchard, a shopping and lifestyle mall. Although we didn't plan to buy anything in Singapore, a Singapore trip wouldn't be complete if we didn't visit any shopping malls eh? But after I came and conquered the place that I realised there isn't much difference in their shopping malls with the shopping malls in KL. Their prices sounded cheaper though if you don't do the conversion. LOL. Daiso there is always $2. Jealous? LOL. No photos on ION Orchard though. If you are interested to visit ION Orchard, you can get on the MRT and alight at Orchard MRT Station.

After dinner at Chinatown, we went for a 'Singapore River Experience' on the Singapore River Cruise. They have many ticket booths but the one we bought from was near the famous Fullerton Hotel. Adult tickets for $18 and child tickets for $10. The cruise takes 40 minutes and we get to see the night view of Singapore's prominent places like the Merlion, Clarke Quay and Marina Bay Sands. Quite a nice experience and I think a must for first-timers to Singapore.

If you want a daytime experience, you can take the boat during the daytime too. Both gives a nice view depending on which you prefer. That sums out our first day in Singapore.

Final Concert In Kindy

Elizabeth had her annual concert recently. This time it's her final year in kindy. She was pretty excited and reminded us a few times. As usual I was her make-up artist again and I was quite satisfied with the outcome. Haha. During the concert, they have a graduation ceremony for the 6 year olds. I'm still waiting anxiously to purchase the concert dvd. It's still not ready. Here are some pictures and videos to share.

The performance - part 1. My girl looked so grown up compared to the first year she had her concert at 4 years old!

The performance - part 2. Her partner aka 'boyfriend' is Aiman. Changes every year. Tsk tsk tsk. The teacher even knows to partner her with Aiman since they're close to each other.

Parents are the proudest during their child's concert, don't you think? And that's why I make it a point to put up in my blog for memories sake. Just in case, my pc screwed up on me too! :D
