R.I.P Larry of the Ottawa Gang

We want to take a moment to pay condolances to one of our finest guests who passed away this morning Aug 4, 2009. Larry was one tough guy and he had put up a good fight. He was one helluva cook and was just a great guy to talk too. He made friends with whoever he talked to and would help anyone when they needed it. He was part of the Cedar Ridge family from the first year we opened and we are all sadened by this news.

After too many days of rain we have finally hit sunshine and warmer weather. The fishing has been luke warm this past week but catches come in daily of Walleye, Small Mouth and Northern Pike. Jigs with minnows and worms seem to still be working during this slow period. The walleye fisherman with a keen feel for the tipof the rod made out just fine. Largest walleye last week came in at around 7-8 lbs. We cant miss acknowledging Carl and his 19" smallmouth which is a fine speciman indeed.

The brook trout fisherman are enjoying what the spring has to offer on our brook trout lakes. Paddy and Mark flew all the way from Ireland to enjoy some of Cedar Ridge Lodges great fishing spots. One day biting on flies another with small spinners and others with a simple worm and float rig. All in all it was a great time to have them and look forward to fishing with them next year.

The staff are enjoying a bit of a break this week getting caught up on the last two weeks. Gets busy again this weekend and then our guide school starts on Monday which will be really exciting. Temps are still cooler than normal but at least the rain has stopped. Fishing has slowed a bit this week with the cooling temperatures at night. Nice to hear the loons at night and the flies start to appear as soon as the sun comes out.

Seems like Christmas at Cedar Ridge Lodge

Well I must say I havent seen a spring like this for some time. Must be that global cooling thing I keep hearing about....or is it warming....not sure but they probably chanaged their mind anyways. Today was fun filled with Christmas songs around the lodge as we prepared ourselves to go out and cut a tree and decorate it but realized it was only May 31. Aside from the snow and high winds we all took time to admire Rays beautiful Walleye weighing in at just over 8lbs. Nice one Ray. Rays method still remains a secret but something tells me a jig on the bottom had something to do with it.

Interesting round of weather this week at the Lodge

Rain and overcast with cool days seems to be the flavour again. Cool temps persisits and the forcast is flurries for Sunday. Its going to be one of those years where summer will come one morning with temps in the 90's. The cool wet weather didnt stop the hardcore fisherman this week. Walleye, Northerns, Small Mouth, Brook trout and Lake Trout are continuing to come in. Jonathan is pictured here with a nice smally and finally agrees that this is more fun than staring at all the pretty girls in math class.

Sharp increase in catch this week at Cedar Ridge Lodge

The weather seems to be coming around finally this week at Cedar Ridge Lodge. Sunny cool days are increasing catch numbers on all lakes. Lake trout, Brook Trout, Northerns, Small Mouth and Walleyes are starting to appear in good numbers. Reports of 20 lake trout and limits of walleye are finally starting to come in. Randy is pictured here with a 4.13 lbs brook trout measuring 21" in lenghth. The season started late this year and finally coming into play. Walleye are just spawning now with temps finally reaching the 9 degree C mark. We ask that all guests return Walleye that havent completed the spawning cycle.

Cedar Ridge Lodge Fishing is On!!!

Well the crew at Cedar Ridge is in full swing with a full camp and boats out on the many lakes available to out guests. Opening week last week was a bit slow due to the late ice out and pre-spawn conditions that go with that. As well water levels are at record highs in the area with lower levels expected in the next week. This past week we have seen just about every form of weather pattern imagineable. Snow, hail, rain, a couple 90 degree days just to start. Nice weather forecasted for the next 10 days at least. This week the the bite is on with brook trout, lake trout, small mouth and northerns coming in daily. Walleye still seem to be in spawn mode with a sharp increase anticipated this week with the waters finally warming up into the 50's F. As usual this time of year, the old bobber and sucker minnow off the end of the dock is producing nice results.

Thanksgiving Supper at Cedar Ridge Lodge

A feast was had by all at Cedar Ridge Lodge. Thanksgiving supper is an annual event everyone looks forward too. Two big turkeys, mashed potaoes, gravy, veggies, cranberrys and pumpkin pie were the highlights of the evening. A restfull night and a full stomach as well as two big bull moose in camp. A hunters dream.

We are pleased to announce the graduates from our 2008 2 week wilderness guide course. Students received in-depth training as a professional wilderness guide. The results are in and 2008 will be recorded as the best spring fishing opener in the lodges history. Not only the number of fish caught but the average size in "ALL" species was up over previous years. Northern Pike are averaging in the 30" range. Lake trout are comming in in excess of 10 lbs. Brook trout are 3-4 lbs and Walleye are 31" !!!. Smallmouth bass have

averaged 5 lbds this spring. Never seen that before. The best news of all is you didnt have to travel to far. 30" Walleye and Northerns and 5 lbs smallmouths were caught right off the end of the dock!!!

Spring Fishing is on!!!!

Well we have gone through a major thaw here and the creeks and rivers are swelled. The ice is black on the lakes and should disappear any morning now. Getting all the gear out and ready for another great spring. Bugs are waking up and that means one good thing for the fly fisherman. The trout are getting ready to feast. Going down to the creeks to identify whats emerging and going to try our hand at the brookies with the fly rod. The northerns are starting there spawn and the walleyes will be soon as the water hits 9 degrees celsius. For those fortunate enough to be joining us for the spring, be sure to grab some sucker minnows for those big northerns. Non stop action and 30+ inch right off the dock. Cant wait!!!!!!!!!

It looks like the guaranteed group size for unit 28 is going to be 11 for a cow. There will be no guarantee for a bull this year. The MNR is trying to adjust the bull to cow ratio for the unit. The guaranteed group size for an archery hunt in Unit 29 will remain at 2 this year. Lots of cows and calf in this area!!!!! Looking forward to another excellent moose hunting year!!!!!!

Getting ready for a stellar year

Well...... we were blessed with another foot of snow this week bringing the total to around 4 feet on the ground. It may look like spring will never come but spring will come very fast here. The snow will thaw very fast causing the creeks and rivers to swell like never before. This is very good for the spring spawn and for the brook trout run. We are excited about last years improvements on the culvert downstream. This will allow our native brook trout population to move into the upper creek system making it easier for our guests to access the body of water.

Well the Canada in the Rough and Cedar Ridge Lodge show finally aired the last two weeks on global TV and the reponse has been amazing. Each show consisted of 8 hours of footage and to boil it down to a 22 minute show is just amazing. Way too hot for the North and the residents. Not sure whats happening with the weather these dates but its not normal. Good news is "No Black Flies today"!!

Opening Week of 2006

We have just finished our opening week and a good time was had by all. Not the best fishing week but considering the first two days was heavy snowfall, then 28 degrees of heat and humidity then 4 degrees and rain, we did do Ok. The guests managed to pick up 18 Walleye, 15 Brook Trout, 3 Lake Trout and numerous Northern Pike during the week. It's always nice to have our regular guests up to see us again, except for the jerk who gave me my 10 bucks back, to catch up on the past years events. The weather finally came back to normal last night and today and the Walleye have started to bite more regularly. they are forcasting 28-30 degrees all week. Here we go again with a heat wave. We do need it to burn the blackflies out for good and then its smooth sailing the rest of the year.

Nature's Symphony

Well the ice has finally left. It went out last Monday. The loons have arrived and a mix of northern ducks were on there way to to the Artic. Sat out on the dock yesterday and listened to the best symphony ever. The grouse were pounding there chests in all directions. The wood peckers were keeping a timely beat and just about every bird was singing in harmony with one another. The beavers even chimed in with there tails slapping the water. Launched boat #1 yesterday and went for a quick tour of the lake. Wanted to drop a line in but time seems to be a shortage this time of year. Maybe this evening. Going to put out a few minnow traps today and see whats happening. We will be helping the MNR this week with the Walleye egg collection for our annual stocking program on our main lake. Waiting for 45 to 48 degree temps to collect the eggs. Waiting for the night temps to stay consisently above 0 in order for us to turn our water on without the pipes freezing at night. I included a picture of a windmill taken from Port Burwell, Ontario this week. Very impressive. A total of 66 windmills that will power 35,000 homes. I wnated to take this one back to the lodge but couldn't get it in the truck. I have included a picture of a moose taken to late. Lets see if you can find Waldo the moose.
