DIY Tutorial: Flower arrangment for wedding gifts

Artificial flowers arrangement to decorate wearable gifts (hantaran).

In many culture, gifts are being presented during wedding ceremonies. In our traditional wedding practice, wedding gifts(hantaran) are "culturally mandated" to be presented by both brides and grooms either during the wedding or their engagement ceremonies. Although religious wise, is not a mandatory, the inheritance of this cultural practice are widely executed until now. To learn more about our cultural wedding ceremony, click here.

I had my own wedding about a year ago, and I have presented to now-my-husband, a total of nine gifts - few wearable items, food and cultural items. To make them presentable, I had decorated all of them on my own, using combinations of different types of artificial flowers. Apart from making them looked beautiful, I have ensured that they are earth-friendly, which means are recycle-able. The same flower arrangements are not to be thrown away (like many did) but instead, can be transformed into decorative flowers for your dinner table or display cabinets - of course, the easy way.

DIY Tutorial: Fabric Curtain Ties

Sewing curtain ties can be easy and cheap, if we decided to make one. If you still have some leftovers scraps from your last curtain making projects, lets spend sometime to try this on own - making a matching fabric curtain ties.

The only supply you need to have is a velcro, and of course the rest of basic sewing tools. I have composed the step to step guide of the making here. There are 14 steps altogether, and I hope all of the photos displayed, will guide you through the process till the end (since the write-up is not available in English)

DIY: Painted Fabric Flowers, leaves and vase.

This is a DIY of fabric flowers for display. Take any artificial flowers of choice and assemble. Take any fabric, trace and "starch" them. Reassemble the whole pieces and it is ready.

Or, interestingly, you can paint them too. The petal, the leaves, up to your creativity. This one is my favorite, looks like a bunch of Hydrangea at first glance. Oh and the middle - buttons, artificial stamens - will do any.

DIY - Two Tone Folded Roses Flowery Bow

So you bought a little gift or present for a friend or relative, daughter or a little sister. You have wrapped it nicely, perhaps it is not too expensive but if you can tun it into a presentable present like this, it will look expensive and nice :)

You need two DIYs here: a two-tones folded ribbon and a flowery bow. The only supplies you need -ribbons, craft glue and a scissor.

As the name implies, the folded roses will use the fold and twist techniques. And to make the flowery bows is really simple - you need to cut ribbons into different sizes, then glue them. Then glue the pretty two toned folded roses in the middle, and you aree done

Felicity Fabric Flower - DIY

This fabric flower making is pretty simple - just need a little sewing, using gathered stitches technique. Can use buttons, pearls or pinwheel in the middle, and once done can use it to decorate shirts, skirts, pants or turn it into decorative belts, headband and clips - it really means, you can adjust the patterns to meet your desirable size. I am scratching my head for the past 5 minutes or so, thinking what to write. The photos are ready, but what is there to write? Nevermind, perhaps posting the photos is for now, is sufficient.

So the made of these brooches are the satin ribbons. Except for the blue one, I choose the unshining side to because not only it is more durable, the colors are a lot natural. Some may prefer the other way around -sure, no harm.

To see how interesting the final outcomes would be, I use different sizes of beads, ranging from 2mm to 7mm. The smaller the size, more beads to sew on. Either way, both came up interestingly.

Handmade floral brooch - Rose Buds

Blog writing with speed of crawling has turned into a mini-marathon; a second blog entry for the day and what a surprise! This time, it is about my handmade Rose-bud satin brooch.

This very same topic was written sometime ago, in october. Some has left comments, while others have openly (and privately) requested for a tutorial. To be frank, that time I wasn't fully satisfied with the final outcomes, that I have to (gently) turn down precisous orders coming from generous visitors. I found something is still missing somewhere during the process of making, that I need to again, further investigate.

However, there were "this and that" in between, going on for some months before I can really be seated comfortably and continue this project. And finally, here are the outcomes:.

The slight difference of prices are due to different types of satin used, which takes difference of challenge to make one.

So the crafter used the CD as a template :) and the techniques used is called the yo-yo. The finished size of the fabric flower is about the size of CD, but of course can accordingly resize it as needed. Add a decorative button and a pin and make lovely brooch. Click to visit.

How to organize ribbons

Wow it's been quite a while since I last wrote anything here in English, and in one go! Time flies really, and this is my 1st English entry for year 2013.

It was raining heavily outside and I had everything switched off except (of course) the refrigerator. With no tv or notebook around, I was idle thinking what to do, then spotted the stacks of 30 x 50 x 20cm plastic containers, which I use to store my satin ribbons. So when the rain stopped, I came across these wonderful and creative, yet simple and affordable ideas of how (should I) organize ribbons (and treat them well)

1. Candy Jar

Clear and transparent jar, easy to spot but may not suitable for types of ribbons that can be easily crumpled.

Months ago, I came up with several designs of fabric brooch made from velvet and using this very same technique. This time, I use different type of fabrics and experiment different designs of fabric florals which can be an end product of brooches, hair accessories, gift decorations and so forth.

There are different types of satin of different quality and prices availble out there, and it is wise to try some of them because soon you will realize how different quality will give interesting results.

Prior to the "curling" process, each fabric need to be "pre-washed" using mixtures of a traditional recipe, then leave to dry. This pre-wash process is vital to ensure the fabric will not fray and to make the "curling" process later, a lot easier.

Once dried, use the fabric pen to trace the patern (the mold), then cut each according to the patern of the desired florals.

Next is the curling process. For this purpose, I use a set of special tools which I inherited (from my mom) and to be frank, it is quite timely too. The whole process is atcually a "pressing" process and you will need a special own-made mat and some extra energy too. If using satin, you will slowly notice the glossy look the fabric gave you after each pressing. Do it with patience, and you will learn to love to see it :)

In summary, there are quite a number of steps to be followed and tools required for this project. Apart from having to use the basic sewing supplies such as scissor, needle and so forth, you may also need to use odd supplies and "anything from the store-room" too. Think creatively and ideas will slowly come and support you.

Floral Fabrik Brooch: Rose-bud

The first time I saw this so called Rose-bud was months ago, and someone was wearing it as a brooch on her shoulder, clasping one tip of her head-cover to her left shoulder dress. Each layers were delicately formed - the perfect color, the uneven-and-natural-look of each "petals. Soon I learnt that it was called the Rose-bud

I finally had the opportunity to see this live, displayed on a shelf in a shopping mall. There are many sizes of them and each has different heights and angles. I told myself that one day, I will re-invent the design to give a better look.

It finally happened only after 2 months. There are numerous tutorials out there, which described the different ways of doing it, most are in forms of visuals, and without telling how it measures - the length and wide. There always this magical, grey-area step before you can really form each bud completely, and it really took me a while to finally figure it out successfully. Soon, I learn how to make each look schematic or natural. I even tried it using different fabrics and ribbons.

I use satin ribbon - the stiff texture gives sharp edging. A lot easier to hold and make it flat

I used jersey - the stripes are nice too

I arranged each petals tighter

Slightly arranged it with "spaces" (loose) gives a natural look. I used hand-dye satin, red and yellow combined

New Fabric Floral Brooch - Cotton

Late afternoon, I self-discovered this new patern of making floral brooch from cotton by accident.

Patern 1:with decorative button

The initial plan is to make something else, but soon realized that cotton does not offer the right "volume", therefore cotton is a no-no. Feeling discouraged, my fingers keeps on pulling the thread and fabrics on and off, then bingo! an idea came from no where and this is how it ends :)

New Floral Satin brooch

It's been sometime sinceI last produce any new floral brooch. I have a long list of them, different designs and techniques to test and try on. Finally yesterday, I managed to produce this one.

Still using satin, the making is a lot simpler, but consumed more satin fabric compared to previous satin floral brooch design.

Last Rmadhan, I was approched by few customers quering if this brooch floral design is available. I get to know few accessories shops out there are selling the same, but using different quality of fabric ( I doubt it is satin) with limited choice of colors. I promised them to (soon) put this into my next production. Unfortunately, schedule was tight, so I decided to defer it so some other "comforting time". Making fabric floral is as good as "seeding the real flower". Do it in haste and they grow with imperfections.

Tutorial: Alter a headcover with irremovable stain- the needlework way.

Some months ago, my eldest sister handed me this piece of her favorite head-cover, requesting for a re-make. Not sure what was the cause. Too sure, this accidental stain can be removed by some "needlework".

Step 1: Fold into 2 and take measurement between the awning - 3 inch

Step 2: Remove stitches and detach the "awning"

Step 3: Measure the width of the stain. (2) Draw a line

Step 4: Cut and remove

Step 5: Fold them and draw the center-line

Step 5: Pin (from the center line) and stitch

Step 6: (1) Measure 3 inch (as in step 1) (2) Draw a new seam line - can use free-hand or using a ruler.(3) Stitch

Step 7: (1) Sew over lock stitch from inside, while cutting the access fabric from step (6) (3) sew over lock stitch along step5

Step 8: (1) Fold and pin (3) Top-stitch

Done - the new look, and stain-no-more

Tutorial: How to sew a Head-Cover

A new customer came by early last week, delivering 2 pieces of printed lycra and requesting me to sew them for her. It was half-way done - she had developed own pattern and cut them accordingly, to make head-covers.

(1. Pattern transferred to fabric - this is how it looks like )

Fortunately, sewing a "Tudung Syria" is quite straight-forward, but to edge them would require a cover-stitch machine. Seldom a hobby-type individual like me (but me) will own any - only specialized industry but seldom will they attend to a personal/customize request like this.
It's been sometime since I last use all of my machines - lock-stitch, overlock (serger) and a cover-stitch. I am glad, the day has finally come to operate them - to ensure they are healthy and running - so glad that I composed this tutorial, specially for my dear customer.

2. Start with area (1) Slightly flatten the "jaw line", draw then cut

3. Stitch the 2 front edges

4.After stitching - the right side view

5. Overlock them (from inside) using a serger.

6. After stitching and serging - the front view

7. Area (2): Fold and pin along the head-line ~ 1.5cm

8. Press it- to reduce the possibility of having breaking-threads

9. Cover-stitch end to end (from the right side)

10. Wrong side - inspect if there is any "breaking threads" - a common problem when using a portable cover-stitch ( as highlighted)

11. Mark it with an erasable pen

12. Re-stitch it. Can either run over the old breaking line, or do it after un-stitching (preferred)

13. Trim the edges if required

14.Area (3): Redraw and (slightly) flatten the bottom-line edges

15. Trim it

16. Fold, pin and press ( step 7-8)

17. Repeat step 9 to 13

Done! - another one (insert)

Reversing the pattern transfer (my keepsafe)

New fabric floral hairbands

Celebrated another hair-dressing day today, not for me but the mannequin. I neatly combed her hair, and put on my new floral hair-bands, made from satin and sheer fabrics.

Both fabrics are pre-hand-dyed, one with red and purple combined, and the other in light and dark red tones.
