Happy New Year 2011 everyone. For the first post of this year, I'll like to start off with a difficult encounter but unavoidable situation in life- Disappointment. I believe it is something everyone is bound to go through since life is not perfect and is of course never a bed of roses. After much observation, I think that disappointment usually arises when we have placed trust and hope in something or someone, and things do not turn out as expected. Since we cannot escape disappointment, the best thing that we can do on our part is to be ready and also be able to adapt to unexpected outcomes. Most of all, I believe that depending on God can help us avoid and overcome the many disappointments in life.

On the practical side, one simple way to avoid disappointment is to never expect things to turn out as planned. This is not meant to say that we are to be pessimistic, rather we have to learn to control our emotions and be prepared for any obstacles and failures. For instance, in study and working life, no matter how well we've rehearsed and prepared for our presentation, there's always bound to be imperfections on that day. Moreover, we may even receive unpleasant or discouraging comments before and after we are done with the presentation. At this point of time, we definitely tend to feel disappointed. It would be a lie if we try to laugh or pretend to be happy, but most importantly it is our ability to pick ourselves up from disappointment.

From the very beginning, tell yourself that there will be hiccups during the event or presentation, and certain things may not turn out though we've prepared really hard. Next thing is to not simply absorb comments especially those that are obviously an attack on your self-esteem. If you've put in your best effort, disregard baseless criticisms. Moreover, we would be a fool to try to please everyone and there is no necessity for it as well since we're not doing it for them.

So, whenever you feel disappointed..assess the situation objectively. Ask yourself what the source of disappointment is, take any appropriate action (if any that could rectify or ease the situation) and above all, move on in life knowing that every situation encountered is a new lesson in life :)

The New Year

It's been a long time since my last blog post. This year has been really hectic and I really thank God for giving me strength to overcome the obstacles. When I reflect and look back, I could never have got through this year alone :) A brief run through for this year-I have met new friends, learnt to work with different people, and learnt to be a more objective person. As this year draws to a close in less than 2 weeks, it is time to bid farewell to 2010 and welcome the year 2011.

Usually, at this time of the year, many of us would be busy drawing up resolutions and plans for the new year. I believe this is a good practice as it helps us to set an aim and direction for our life. However, it is undeniably easy to make a plan but to really implement it is another story :) We start off being enthusiastic in the beginning but other things can crop up and hinder us from achieving our goals. This sometimes causes people to be discouraged and lose hope in their resolutions. In my humble opinion, here are some tips which may be useful:

1. Be practical
When setting a goal, bear in mind it is something we are aiming to achieve. Hence, set a realistic target instead of a goal that may look good but is actually really hard to achieve in one year.

2. Don't push yourself too hard
Life is unpredictable at times as unexpected issues may be a setback to what we have planned to do. In fact, failing to achieve one of the resolutions on your list doesn't mean the plan has failed. For example, if you face a difficult situation and are able to stay calm, you may have achieved one of your resolutions which is to stay positive and objective. With this, it is easier to move on and continue to carry on with life. Don't kick yourself when a resolution doesn't turn out, focus on the rest which are attainable.

3. Be flexible
In this ever changing environment, things can turn around 360 degrees in a short time. Plans may need to be totally changed, so our resolutions would be affected as well. Be prepared to adapt and let your resolutions flow in nicely according to the circumstances. For instance, if you've switched to a new workplace somewhere during the year, you might have new resolutions like to fit in with a new working environment and get on well with new colleagues.

I wish everyone Merry Christmas and have a great new year ahead!

Wrong target

On one hand, it seems to be tragic as the robber is so young, a 17 year old teenager. However, it was out of self-defense that the victim shot the robber. Moreover, the robber was armed with a machete.
A lesson to be learnt is there is no quick way to wealth or success, when we do it at the expense of others. Honestly, goals are difficult to keep at time as life is full of suprises, it takes us on an unexpected road which may cause us to deviate or lose sight of our aims. But, it's never too late to start again as long as we can stay focus and never back down. Just keep moving forward, be thankful for whatever situation we are in, and we'll be one step closer to achieving our dreams :)

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Tomorrow we would be ushering in the month of November, which is also the 2nd last month of the year....

For at least the next 2 months, my main resolution is to just keep moving forward no matter how bad things may turn out :) It is undeniable that we get disappointed, upset, angry and any other unpleasant feelings at some or many points of life..but letting these emotions overwhelm us stops us from staying objective and seeing the bigger picture.

What's life without challenges..it is a fact that everyone goes through..the journey is never smooth sailing..but with all the tides and waves, we become a better and stronger person :)

Verse for the day..
Proverbs 3: 5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
       and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,

1 Corinthians 13

Love

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The art of conversation

Hi everyone :) Welcome to a brand new week and hope you are in the best of health.

Today's post is not really related to health, but rather how to engage in a meaningful conversation. Sometimes, when we are excited about something, we tend to talk non stop forgetting the listener has not said a word :)

A proper conversation involves two or more people involved and not just one person dominating and talking all the time. Hence, it is important to remember to give others a chance to express their views regardless of how much we have to say.

Listening more to others is also a great way to make new friends. As we let the other person talk, we learn more about him/her and they also feel really happy that we've lend them our ears :)

Lastly, how do we end a conversation? If we're not in a rush, just let the other person finish up what they are saying. On the other hand, if you're rushing for time, simply excuse yourself nicely, telling the other person you've got another appointment and will catch up with them some other time :)

The art of conversation

Chase away the blues :)

This was news in 2008, but one principle remains- to appreciate and be thankful of the looks we have. It is a heartbreaking video of irreversible damage done due to obsession with beauty. Of course, this is indeed a rare and very extreme case where the Korean model, Hang Mioku injected cooking oil into her face in hope of getting softer and smoother skin without paying for high cosmetic surgery fees. This incident happened about 20 years ago.

Every person has their physical flaws-no one is perfect. But one thing to bear in mind is that we should be thankful for the way we look. Besides, this is just one aspect of life and there are so many other things in life to look forward to :)

Obsession is dangerous because it causes people to act irrationally, hence making decisions which may have a detrimental or irreversible effect like in the case above. The fact that we need to dress properly and take care of our looks is nothing wrong-we should never try to be like someone else because each of us are unique and have our own strengths and weaknesses.

Hotels in Dublin

This email basically states that you'll get a free laptop if you send the email to at least 8 people. It really sounds so simple and too good to be true. Sure enough, it turns out to be a hoax. In fact, the real Sony Ericsson has come out to clarify last year regarding this false email. There are many articles warning people about this, and some of them are as below:

Real promotions by legitimate companies usually won't carry out their promotions using chain email. They'll communicate directly with the public, or if not, they'll at least hire profession PR firms.

Whenever you go on a tour, you'll most probably be brought to stop by certain shops to pick up souvenirs or some local health products. Logically, any shop would definitely wish to be chosen by tour groups as they can probably make a lot of money out of tourists. Of course to get to be on the list, the shops have to be selling something unique and be of reasonable quality. Nevertheless, the tour guides are usually paid some commission for bringing the tourists to the selected shops.

Well, nothing wrong with all those incentives but things might have gone a little too far if tour guides scold or force tourists to shop at those selected shops. About a month ago, this scenario played out in Hong Kong as one of the tourists recorded the tour guide scolding the tourists from China for spending too little. You can watch the video here.

As a result of this blow up, the tour guide had to make a public apology as it had sparked the anger of many parties including the China authorities. Indeed, there's always two sides of the story. Tourists can also be difficult people, having high demands and not being satisfied easily. Being a tour guide is also no easy job and the basic pay may not actually be very attractive considering the amount of work and time taken. However, tourists are still the customers and it is also their prerogative with regards to the amount they want to spend. Perhaps those products are just not to their interest or they find it to be of no use to them.

Hotels in London City Centre

If you are planning a holiday in London and want a hotel room right smack in the thick of things, you might want to consider booking a room in the city centre of London. There are so many hotels that it might be a bit of a headache settling on the right one for you. Hopefully, this guide will give you a better view of which is the best hotels in London City Centre to go for on your holiday.

For something a little upscale, you might want to consider the Grand Plaza Serviced Apartments. Luxury has taken on a new meaning with the Grand Plaza. Don’t let the words Serviced Apartments fool you because this hotel has everything that you can ever want on holiday. From your own private bathroom and complimentary toiletries which are already a staple in all hotels, why not go for one that also gives you your very own stovetop, kitchenette and cookware. The location is also ideal because there are so many things to do around the area of the hotel that you will definitely wish that you could stay there forever.

If you want a feel of normal London life, why not go for the Caesar Hotel which is set amid a row of London townhouses. Soak in the atmosphere as you will definitely feel a part of the residential area that the Caesar Hotel is based in. You do not need to worry that it is too far away from everything because it is just three blocks away from Hyde Park. It is also within walking distance of Oxford Street and Portobello Road. The Caesar Hotel offers all amenities like other hotels. For food, why not sample the delicacies served at their well known XO Restaurant? They serve breakfast and a la carte dinners every day.

However, for those who are on a budget that might not be so willing to splurge on their accommodation should really look into making a reservation at the Gresham Hotel HSD. The best part of the bargain is that it is within walking distance to all the important sights and sounds of London – Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Speakers’ Corner and the Marble Arch. Do take note however that all the guestrooms in the hotel are non-smoking rooms.

So, really, there are so many hotels that you can choose from if you are looking for a place to stay in London City Centre. Here is hoping that you find the one that will make your dream holiday as perfect as it can be!

Well, you would be surprised because holidays to Canada are that and so much more. Forget the bustle of New York or the history of Rome. Why not go for something totally different and start planning some holidays to Canada immediately? Canada boasts so many different things that you can do – it will definitely be a different type of holiday that you are used to. Whether you love shopping, or want some skiing action or just a normal road trip across the country, you will surely enjoy exploring Canada.

It is the stuff of legends – an awe inspiring work of art by Mother Nature. Niagara Falls never fails to astound tourists and it is definitely a sight to behold. Apart from the Falls, you can opt for self tours so you can explore the natural wonders, sights and sounds of Canada on your own without pressure to follow the schedule set by a tour company. There are many self tour packages that you can choose from – it all depends on what you want to see!

If it is shopping that you want, Canada has so much to offer you. From Toronto to Vancouver, enjoy the shopping life because you will be amazed at the array of shops that you can buy things from. Don't forget to visit West Edmonton Mall, the largest in North America. Whether you are looking for little trinkets for your family or something special for yourself, you are bound to find something in your holiday. Or if you are a Nature bug who just loves a good hike through the park, then you can opt to traipse through Canada’s national parks. Did you know that there are more than 41 national parks in Canada? There is definitely something for even the most hardened hiker to drool over.

Being on holiday surely was never as exciting as exploring Canada because there are so many things to do there.

Whether you are looking for some city excitement, or a walk surrounded by lush greenery and the beauty of Nature, or even some quality time up in the mountains skiing, Canada definitely has something to offer you.

Caribbean cruises

Or if shopping is what you are really aiming for, buy souvenirs and other pretty items at the shops scattered around the ports. You are simply spoilt for choice.

You will definitely get your money’s worth as there will be so many activities designed for everybody both on board and off the ship. Your holiday need not be the same, old boring holiday where you are staying in a building and exploring only the surrounding areas. Book yourself on a cruise and let your mind drift away into the waters. It is definitely a refreshing and rejuvenating experience for everybody!

Staying in Edinburgh

Luckily for you, Edinburgh has a host of hotels that are suited for all sorts of tourists and travelers from across the globe. Here is a guide of some of the more famous hotels in Edinburgh city centre that will help you plan your Edinburgh holiday better!

The Hotel Missoni is located at the Main Street of George IV Bridge so you really would be at the center of everything! The room décor is simply to die for because it was designed in the Italian style of black and white with splashes of colour. You would think that you had walked into an art museum instead of a hotel. Step onto the balcony and you would enjoy a beautiful view of Edinburgh city at its most beautiful. The Hotel Missoni also has a prime position because it is at the center of both the Old and New Towns so it has convenience right at its doorstep.

If you are looking for something a little less grand, and more modern, then you should consider Thistle Hotel which is also set in a very convenient location. The Thistle Hotel is just off Princes Street and thus, at a very handy distance from all of Edinburgh’s city attractions. If you are in your shopping mode, then you are in luck because from Thistle Hotel, it is just a short walk to all the shops that can satisfy even the most insatiable shopaholic. If it is sightseeing that you want to do, you can also walk from the Hotel to attractions like Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and the National and Scottish Galleries.

However, since you’re in Edinburgh, why not go for a hotel which is more rustic that can therefore give you a more thorough Scottish experience? Well, the Royal Terrace Hotel is the place for you then. While the façade still maintains its rich history and architecture, the insides of the Royal Terrace Hotel recently went through a major refurbishment process which has made it simultaneously more modern yet still in touch with its old roots. With all the amenities on offer, you would be hard put to step out of the hotel to get a glimpse of beautiful Edinburgh.
