Here's our collaboration #2--a painting that Lynn Kishiyama and I are working on together. We weren't too happy with it so we packed it up and went to the Kilt for lunch.

Daily Paintworks Challenge #1--Imperial

This was Daily Paintworks Challenge #1. I got behind on the challenges so I whipped out Challenge #2 in 80 minutes (10 min./painting) then went back and whipped this painting out in an hour. I needed longer but I didn't have it. It's not drawn right but who cares. If you go to the link above then scroll to the bottom you'll see my painting, which I'm gonna wipe off. Over 80 artists painted paintings--it's fun to see the different paintings. Some of them were really creative.

I think I might try painting this again.

My Texas Painting Pal, Carol Marine and her wiz-bang husband David, created this website called Daily Paintworks. There are a dozen artists that exhibit on the site regularly but lately she's been inviting other artists to participate in her Challenges. I missed the first one (I'm gonna make it up), but the second one was to paint a bunch of little paintings (mine are 3 x 3") limiting each to ten minutes. We had to use the same object for every painting and I chose my pumpkin because....well, that's all I had handy. My paintings got better...then worse. I was fun!

Lynn Kishiyama and I are going to collaborate on a large piece of artwork. We'll be filming the process and will post the work as it progresses and the end result. The question is: Will we KILL each other? Ha! I doubt it. It's gonna be FUN! We'll be tacking our canvas to the wall in our studio and slappin' paint on!

It was "raining" these beautiful leaves the other day at the Paso Robles City Park, across from the Studios on the Park where I have a studio/gallery. So I attempted to paint several, which, as usual, was harder than I thought.

I try to always do a sketch first.

Complementary Colors: Blue and Orange...my favorite combo. I used to think I could draw ok...now I'm not so sure. David Marine, Carol's husband said, while I was in Texas, "Life is too short to be unsure." I'm pretty sure that's what he said. Cracked me up, so I wrote it down. And my friend Lynn Kishiyama says, "Often wrong, never in doubt." Wish I was that way! :) I hate being wrong and I'm always second guessing myself. Up until now...have a nice week, friends.

Penny's Painting-a-Day--Indian Corn and Pumpkin Pie

Well, this Indian corn was way harder than I thought. Gonna have to try it again when I have more time. So I moved onto the pumpkin pie before it was all gone.

This is Martha Stewart's recipe for Honey Molasses Pumpkin Pie, at least I think that's what it's called. Anyway, Libby Tolley and I got to stay with Ann Rode for a week down in Rolling Hills and she had a Martha Stewart cookbook. So I copied a bunch of pumpkin pie recipes including one made with acorn squash! So far this is the only one I've made. Her crust recipe is great! Uses butter! The pie was light colored and had a delicate taste. I like more spices but it was good. I'm want to do a series of pie paintings as an excuse to make more pies. YUM!

50 Painting-A-Day Paintings

OK, I just spent a week with Carol Marine, Daily Painter Extraordinaire....so I thought I try to paint a painting a day like she does...well as often as she does. I WISH I could paint like she does!

So I started with pumpkins since it's Thanksgiving. Here's my sketchbook and my little paintings. Orange pumpkins on a burnt orange background--I thought I'd keep it simple. WHAT A JOKE. It was really hard since everything was Orange! Plus it's really hard to photograph the paintings without glare.

Oh Well! Happy Thanksgiving! Now I'm gonna go make a homemade pumpkin pie ala Martha Stewart! If anyone wants one of these paintings let me know quick before I WIPE them off ala Penny Lentz!

Lost Maples, Texas

We missed the peak of the fall color but it was still beautiful.

It was a difficult place to paint, not much contrast. Here are some of our paintings. Mine sucked for the most part and I wiped as many off as I could!

Pen Receives Scholarship to Sedona Arts Center

Today, I received word that I have received a scholarship to study with
Jennifer McChristian at the Sedona Arts Center this April. Her oil paintings feature urban landscapes and figures. Just up my alley!

This is her painting "Fred in the Shed." It was selected as 'Finalist' in the

February 2010 Fine Art Studio Online competition judged by Logan Hagege.

I will be spending the week in Sedona painting with another fabulous painter and friend Carol Marine, who was just here in SLO last month teaching us how she paints her fantastic still life paintings.

But here's her painting "Mustang" which is also kinda urban.

I was Invited to Join a Select Group of Artists in Honoring the Salinas River, Showcasing the Visual Arts in Charming Paso Robles: Celebrating the City's Recent Purchase of Over 100 Riverside Acres

I will have a display of my current paintings in the park on festival day, plus my river paintings will be on display in the Studios on the Park.
AND...
I'll be painting in the quick draw, two-hour paint out in the morning. Everyone knows I love a good race. Ha!

We even have water in the river this year! OH BOY!

Painting with John

Today, I went painting with John. We painted cactus at the Rios Calendonia Adobe. Here he is demonstrating to his class.
I had to wipe my painting off because I got CONFUSED! The cactus started out in the shade and ended up in the sun. ARG!

I had the pleasure of attending the expo with Libby Tolley and assisting her with her workshops. What a blast we had while working hard.

October 13-17, 2008
Thanks to the generosity of Libby, I was able to attend the Bill Hosner painting workshop in Morro Bay all week. It was very hot on the beach which was unusual. Our models were dancers from the local ballet forklorico and they were beautiful.

Open Studios
Frank Armitage invited me to exhibit my paintings at his home during Open Studios. I was pleased to sell my painting, "San Miguel Mission" to Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer from Riverside. I'm glad its new home is with them because they love the California Missions.

September 20, 2008
My 50th Birthday.
I was fortunate to accompany Terry on his Everest Challenge Race in Bishop, California. Over 29,000 feet of total climbing. I got to go up to the top of the Bristlecomb Pine Forest to see the oldest living things on earth. Amazing.

Tolley Workshops
I was able to take/assist the two week-long Tolley painting workshops. We all had such a great time and learned SO much, thanks to the generosity of Libby Tolley. What a fabulous teacher she is.

Spring 2008
Life Drawing with Marian Stevens
I was blessed again to be able to take life drawing with Marian Stevens Loomis at Cuesta. She is a gifted teacher and artist. She always challenges us to look for new ways to express ourselves. (That's my pal Darlene during critique.)

Dreamweaver
I also took a semester long Dreamweaver website design class in which I learned an enormous amount. I've done several websites since and have continued to learn.

Chelsea
Our beloved Chelsea passed away after we came home from celebrating our 25th Anniversary. What a wonderful dog she was. We miss her dearly.

1/11/08-Good Morning! Well, it's almost two weeks into the new year and I haven't painted a thing. But! Chelsea's tail is healing and she just ate a little breakfast. Last night, after the surgery to remove the botton half of her tail, she was really out of it and it pain and sick to her stomach. But I think she's better!

I entered this painting in the upcoming Art Center exhibition for the Oil Pastel Acrylic Group. Hope it gets in.
