Of particular interest is work which crosses boundaries, encourages evolving artistic and social dialogue between artists and audiences, and develops the culture and community of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Proposals: The Lab accepts proposals on an on-going basis. In particular, The Lab seeks proposals of new work that fully utilizes our space or engages with the space in a nontraditional manner. The Lab accepts submissions from emerging and experimental curators for group visual art exhibitions or performance series. A curator's own artwork should not be included in the project proposal. If accepted, The Lab encourages curators to post an open call for entries on The Lab's website, although this is not required. The LAB also reviews proposals from visual artists for the main gallery space or solo shows in the front gallery. The Lab accepts proposals from performers for 2-4 week residencies in our main gallery space. We strongly prefer to present new work that has not been shown elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area; exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.

Curators, solo artists, and collaborators are encouraged to apply to one of our three spaces:

Main Gallery: Available for curated group shows, solo or two-person exhibitions or residencies for visual artists and/or performers. The gallery is 2,100 square feet. Chairs, risers, stages, and moveable walls are available. The maximum seated capacity is 100.

Front Gallery: Primarily for solo visual artists. 123 sq feet. Four walls approx 8' wide x 10' tall.

Ticket Booth: For single-channel new media works. Small (4x4) ticket-booth closet adjoining entry hall to the LAB. Currently we only have the ability to exhibit DVD works in this space.

Residencies: Solo artists/performers or collaborators may apply for residencies in the Main Gallery space. The LAB offers 2 performance residencies per year. The LAB offers artists an extended workspace for 2-4 weeks to create new work; the length of time depends on the scope of your project. Residents are encouraged to engage the community with public events such workshops or panel discussions. If you are applying for a LAB residency, please address these additional issues of time, community, and budget (if applicable) along with the regular application (instructions stated below).

Our programming committee meets monthly to review proposals. Accepted proposals are generally presented 6-18 months after the date of acceptance. For more information on past LAB programming, please see our list of past events.

How to Apply (truncated)

Project Description that addresses the following questions:

*What are the specifics of your proposal?

*Which space are you applying to (Main Gallery, Front Gallery, or Ticket Booth?) Please describe how you would use The Lab's space to enhance your project. How would you engage/utilize this space?

*What kind of resources do you need to complete and install your work?

*What kind of events do you envision being programmed with your project/work, if any?

*How would working with The Lab further your artistic goals?

*Has or will this work, or similar work, been shown elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area? If so, please indicate when and where.

Review the following:

Gallery Floorplan [pdf]

Proposal Checklist [pdf]

ABOUT The Lab

Visit website for full details: thelab.org

The Lab
2948 16th Street
San Francisco, CA 94103
p: 415.864.8855
f: 415.864.8860

Design Competition

Deadline: January 6, 2010 at 11:00 p.m. CST (RECEIVE)

Redefine Dining!
Design Competition
World Kitchen LLC
Rosemont, IL

You are invited to redefine dining!

PURPOSE: The 2010 theme of our design competition—Redefining Dining!—has been chosen to celebrate the culturally diverse and changing role of the dining experience. Dining is expressive of lifestyle, economics, ethnicity and heritage. It is imbued with meaning and ritual, as well as function. At its most basic, it nourishes the body; at its best it nourishes the spirit. But how we eat, when we eat, what we eat, even where we eat have all changed drastically in the past 100 years. World Kitchen believes that change is the fuel that design innovation thrives on. It inspires us by asking the question, “How can we make this experience better?”

Defined broadly, the entire “Tablescape” is the palette. Designers are invited to address single items or full systems and any artifact that is mass produced except the food itself. The expectation is that this breadth of canvas will inspire designers to apply their research and problem-solving skills, their creativity and empathy and their aesthetic sense, to identifying needs and fresh approaches relevant to today’s lifestyle trends. The hope is that designers will not simply submit decorative bowls, but will consider the experience of consuming food in today’s realities.

World Kitchen seeks to celebrate and explore what is the modern dining experience by sponsoring a design competition (the “Competition”). The goal of the Competition is to spur innovative thinking and problem solving that will demonstrate the role of design as a core value for the Housewares industry.

ELIGIBILITY & SCOPE

You are eligible to enter if:
 You are over 18 years of age;
 You are eligible to enter based on U.S. law;
 You are not a resident and or company of countries under U.S. embargo, including Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.
 You are entering your original work.

Designs are eligible to enter if they are:
 Your original work;
 Single artifacts, entire product lines or whole systems;
 Have not previously won an honor or award in any competition; and
 Focused on enhancing the modern dining experience per the competition’s goals.

Design concepts should reflect and respond to today’s many lifestyles and the changing nature of the dining experience across cultures and social groups, whether on the go, at family evenings, with parties of friends or at elegant functions. However, concepts should reflect the functional and contextual opportunities and constraints of the dining scenario(s) for which they are intended.

You decide whether you want to enter single artifacts, product lines or whole systems, but the focus has to be on dining.

JUDGING CRITERIA: All Entries will be judged according to the following equally-weighted Judging Criteria:

(a) Opportunity identification and research
(b) Innovation
(c) User experience
(d) Appropriate aesthetics
(e) Manufacturability

Awards:
 Three Top Awards of $5,000 each
 An expense-paid trip for your or one team representative to attend an award ceremony at the International Home + Housewares Show® in Chicago, Illinois, between March 14 and March 16, 2010.

Questions? As set forth in detail below, the prize is the sole payment that each winner shall receive from Sponsor and each winner must agree to transfer all right, title and interest in their entry to Sponsor in exchange for receiving any prize from Sponsor. No further royalties of any kind shall be owed to any winner. If this is unacceptable to you, then do not enter this Competition.

Competition Brief (truncated)
Lulan Artisans is looking for new and innovative designs that will help Lulan to continue to stand out in the market and that will be produced using traditional techniques and construction methods. We would like designs that highlight the weavers’ skills by focusing on the “woven by hand” aspect of production while still incorporating the contemporary modern aesthetic as Lulan currently does.

Lulan is primarily interested in receiving designs that are:

Structural weaves
Ikat designs
Block-print designs
We may also consider designs that focus on:

Embroidery
Supplementary weft
Fiber content: The winning designs that will be added to Lulan Artisans’ collection will be made of organic cotton and/or linen.

Most designs may be used to create an upholstery-weight fabric, while others will be considered for lighter weight for drapery use, apparel use or throws. A variety of applications will come from each design and the differing weight of these textiles.

Schedule
The Lulan Artisans Textile Competition 2009 starts on Monday June 1, 2009 and ends on Sunday, December 15, 2009. Entries may be submitted at any time during this time period.

Winners will be notified in February 2010 and announced in March 2010.

Rules (truncated)

Eligibility: Open to entrants 18 years or older. All Entries must be the original creation of the entrant.

Judging: All entries will be judged based on the following criteria, each of which will be equally weighted: aesthetics, innovation, contemporary fit with Lulan design sensibility, durability, functionality and marketability (“Judging Criteria”).

Sponsor plans to select three winning entries, but Sponsor reserves the right to select less winners should entries not meet the judging criteria or more winners should the judges in their sole discretion decide that more than three entries meet the criteria and needs of Sponsor’s 2010 textile collection.

Prizes: Sponsor will select three winning entries. Each winner will receive a prize of U.S. $1,500.

Visit website for complete Competion Details and Official Rules: http://11-17.lulan.com/about/design_brief

About Lulan Artisans
A unique collaboration between U.S. designers and groups of gifted artisans located throughout Southeast Asia, Lulan Artisans designs and produces high-quality, hand-woven, hand-dyed natural textiles. There have been a few "fits and starts” along the way but we achieved our goal and even continued to evolve. The next stage of our development brings the following changes:

The Keeper is bowing out. It's been a good run but it's time to move on to other projects. The reins have been handed over to a very good friend — Elise N. — who shall guide FACFE from this point forward.

Fiber Art Calls for Entry shall no longer be sponsored by Art Craft Design Culture. Our friends (who are also in transition) have been very good to us. Their support has been invaluable. We thank them and wish them well.

The focus of the blog shall remain the same but expect additions and enhancements to the overall experience.

Elise will include a note of introduction prior to the next postings. We are extremely pleased and confident Fiber Art Calls for Entry shall thrive during her stewardship.

We now join you on the other side by becoming READERS of this fine blog. Thanks for taking the journey with us.

Cheers,

The Keeper
