How to: make a spider web design!

After posting the Halloween Party Food, which included pictures of sugar cookie pops with spider web designs on them, I had a lot of people ask how I made the icing design. I had even more people comment that they could never make them look so pretty. So I’m here to tell you- and more importantly show you that you can! Here’s a simple tutorial- watch how easy!
I used Glacé Icing for these cookies, but the same technique will work on a variety of frostings and icings as well as with white and dark chocolate ganache. You can use this method to top cupcakes, cakes, cookies, just about anything that you could top with frosting!
Step 1: Top cookie with the base color. In this case I’m using a white base.
I used the Glace Icing in the flooding consistency and added just a tad more powdered sugar so it wasn’t too runny. However you don’t want it as thick as you would use for piping. It should easily run and Don’t bother trying to outline them first to fill, just flood the cookie and either stop near the edges, or what’s even easier is to do as I did and just let the icing drip right over the edge of the cookie. Let the cookie dry for just a few minutes. If you’re doing multiple cookies, go ahead and glaze another 5-6 cookies and then your first one will be ready for step 2.
Step 2: Using black icing, again just a tad thicker than flooding consistency, but thinner than piping consistency, start from the center of the cookie and pipe a swirl until you get to the outside edge.

If you don’t have a piping bag, just use a heavy duty zip-lock bag with a small hole cut out of one corner.
Step 3: Use a toothpick and starting from the center of your swirl, lightly drag it in a straight line to the edge.

Step 4: Continue around the cookie repeating that step. You can continue pulling only from the center, or so as I did and alternate pulling from the center out and then from the outside to the center. You’ll get different designs, try it out and see which one you like.

Experiment with color combos. I love how the black turned out. If you’re using black make sure to use gel or paste food color. Purple, green, and orange webs look cool too!

Let those cookies dry for a full 24 hours if you’re going to stack them, otherwise they can dry for only a few hours as long as you’re very careful not to bump them and dent the icing. It will be smooth and dry on top, but soft underneath. (Which is in my opinion, the yummiest way to eat them!)

Mummy Dogs

This is a childhood favorite and always the most popular of our Halloween spreads! Cut crescent roll dough into thin strips and wrap around hot dogs. Bake according to crescent package directions and use ketchup or mustard for eyes. I cut my hot dogs in half to make them bite-sized.

Quarter apples and take a wedge out of the center of each quarter. Dunk them in water with a little lemon juice to prevent browning. Use slivered almonds for teeth (I toasted mine for color and taste!) Eyes are optional. I stuck pretzel rods in and attached candy eyes with peanut butter.

Easy peasy! Plain cheese pizza, just make a ring of cheddar around the outside edge and mozzerella in the center. Cut into wedges to make the candy corns.

Cheesy Fingers

Super kid friendly- who doesn’t love string cheese?? Again, I cut them in half to make them kid-sized. Use the flat side of a knife to make the knuckle marks and attach slivered almonds with a dab of cream cheese for the nails. I also used a knife to shave off just a bit of the cheese at an angle before attaching the almond.

Chocolate Cherry Mice

You’ll need marichino cherries for this one. Make sure you buy ones with stems. Drain them and dry them well with paper towells. Dip in almond bark, or chocolate bark. When they are semi dry, attach a chocolate chip for a nose, slivered almonds for ears, and little candies or sprinkles for eyes.

Dirt n’ Worms

Another classic. Use chocolate pudding for your mud and put some crushed oreos on top for dirt. Hide those gummy worms in there for eeek factor!

Pumpkin Sammies

This is a great staple for a Halloween party spread because it pleases both kids and adults and is something with substance! Use Halloween cookie cutters to cut your bread. I like to fill some with peanut butter or cream cheese and orange-colored jam (like peach or apricot) for the kiddos, and something more sophisticated like Teriyaki Chicken Salad for the grown ups!

Nutty Ghosts

Nutter Butters are naturally ghost shaped, which make them perfect for dipping! Give them a bath in some almond bark and put on a couple of mini chocolate chips for eyes. And might I add that white chocolate covered Nutter Butters taste really good!

Witches Wands

Dipped Pretzel Rods are instantly transformed into “Witches Wands” with a little Halloween pizazz! Put them in containers with candy corns to hold them up. The little mini buckets pictured are from the Target dollar section. SO cute!

Spidey Cookies

Red hots and licorice turn oreos into creepy (but kinda cute) spiders. Shoestring licorice is hard to find these days, but Twizzlers makes “Pull-Apart” candy that works perfectly.

Spider Web Dip

This trick works for pretty much any dip that you could pipe sour cream on top of! I always do a basic 7-Layer taco dip. Put some sour cream in a plastic baggie with the end snipped off and use it to draw a web pattern. Throw on a fake spider or two and your favorite party dip is instantly creepy!

Slimy Worms on a Bun

My son seriously thought these looked too gross to eat-he wouldn’t even touch it! Just slice hotdogs and drop them into boiling water for just a minute or two and they’ll curl a bit. Dunk them in some bbq sauce and you have slimy worms :)

Witch Hats

One of the easiest Halloween tricks (and treats!). Place a Hershey’s Kiss on top of a Keebler Fudge Strip Cookie and you have a little hat. Use the little tubes of frosting you can buy in the grocery store baking isle. Pipe a ring around the outside of the bottom of the kiss and press onto the cookie. It will squeeze out and make the ring around the kiss. Then pipe on the bow.

Yields: 12 Regular sized Cupcakes

Ingredients

1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Baking soda
1 teaspoon Vinegar, (ADD LAST)
1 1/2 Cups Flour
1/2 cup Melted Butter, (Can Sub - Veg Oil)
2/3 cup Agave
2/3 cup Milk, (Can sub with milk substitute)
1/3 cup Cocoa powder

Baking Instructions

As always, Preheat your oven to 350 Degrees.

Get your paper liners and/or butter grease your pans if your not using silicone bake trays.

Mix Batter until it is smooth and bubbly with air, your mix should be free of nasty flour clumps and ready to pour into your molds within 4 minutes by hand or about 60 seconds by machine (on high)

Whip up some spooky frosting!

You can also make your own frosting, and use some all natural food dye to add those creepy colors kids crave! Googly eyes, and black licorice go a long way for some spooky, tasty halloween treats that are sure to satisfy and school function, home party or even at the office.
Who needs an excuse for sugar free cupcakes :)
All you need to whip up your own frosting (Icing, Ganache)
1/4 Cup of Heavy cream (per color)
3 Oz Of Butter (not melted)
2 Oz O Unsweetened Shaved Bulk Chocolate
and then a third cup of agave

Then after heating the cream and agave together, stirring often until it comes to a boil.
shut off the heat source and add your shaved chocolate to the mix
stirring until the chocolate is completely melted.
This is where the fun begins, pour your chocolate cream mix into a bowl, then add in 1 tbsp of the unmelted butter at a time and work it into the mix until the icing becomes creamy
Repeat process for each color of frosting

Marshmallows make great eyes when dotted with mini chocolate chips (can use unsweetened)

Try this great tip:

By adding a little honey to the mix you can make frosting that stays in the shape you cast it, in other words spiders legs and squid's tentacles stay where you put them and don't fall apart like most store bought icing's.
Honey is a great natural sweetener for pies, cakes, teas and almost everything you use sugar for.
Substituting sugar and eggs is a great way to share share with other family members and seniors who may not be able to handle sugar or have allergies to those types of foods.
(Remember add the wet mix to the dry mix, the vinegar and baking soda are used in place of eggs for those with egg allergies, you can replace them with 2 egg whites from large eggs if you wish).

Pumpkin Cupcakes

If you need a batch of quick and easy cupcakes for a Halloween party, this pumpkin design is the way to go. No need to call a bakery when you can whip up these simple treats in no time. Below you will find a list of supplies and directions for how to decorate a batch of pumpkin cupcakes.

Supplies:

Cake mix
Cupcake wrappers
Orange colored icing
Green gum drops
Decorator tool or plastic bag

Directions:

Bake your desired flavor of cake mix in the oven according to the directions on the package. Let cool before applying the icing.
Make a batch of orange colored buttercream icing. With regular food coloring, you will need to add 3 drops of yellow and 2 drops of red. Repeat the drops if you desire a brighter shade of orange.
Fill the decorator tool or plastic bag with the orange icing and swirl around each cupcake. When you reach the middle, continue to squeeze out the icing and slowly lift up to create the pumpkin shape. Top the center of each cupcake with a green gum drop and enjoy!

Here's an easy and quick way to do Halloween witch makeup. You'll should have the following Halloween face makeup on hand, though the colors can vary:
*Green makeup
*White makeup
*Yellow makeup
*Black or Brown makeup

Other Items You'll Need:
*Special effects makeup is optional (for warts, nose, scars, etc)
*A few makeup sponges
*Brushes to apply the details of the makeup

How to do Easy Witch Makeup
Starting with a clean face, cover the entire face with a light layer of green face makeup with a sponge. Don't forget the neck and the ears. Once the face is covered, use a heavier coat of the green face makeup to add contour under the cheekbones and around the corners of the mouth for the effect of deep lines.

Apply a light layer of black face makeup around the eyes with a sponge for a sunken in look. Highlight this area around the eyes with white makeup. Next, use the white makeup to highlight the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose to create an elongate effect. For a more sallow look, you can also use yellow face makeup to highlight these areas.

Use black Halloween makeup to create high arched eyebrows. This is best done with a makeup brush. Fill in the 'laugh lines' with a streak of black Halloween makeup on each side of the mouth. This will look like 'wrinkles'. Use a sponge with black makeup to add contours to the sides of the chin and to make the cheekbones look hollow and drawn in.

There are tons of different ways to frost/decorate Halloween cupcakes. Here's a simple spiderweb:

**I have found that it is so much easier for me to make these at the same time I make the Eyeball pops. With the cake pop pan that I use, I always have left over batter. Why waste it, right? A better use for the batter are these easy Halloween cupcakes.

If you are making these as a stand alone Halloween goody, just use a regular box of cake mix and follow the instructions on the box. You can dress them up inside by adding orange and black sprinkles to the batter before baking! When you're ready to frost, here's how:

How To Create A Spiderweb In Your Cupcake Frosting:

Use a rubber or silicone spatula to spread 1 to 1.5 tbs of white frosting onto the cupcake (it doesn't need to be perfect)
Using the black decorating gel, make three circles from small to large on the surface
Starting from the center, drag the tip of a butter knife through the rings and frosting in a straight line all the way out to the edge to create the spiderweb shape. I don't use the serrated (cutting) side for this.
Make about 8 lines, and this is what your result will look like.

Up first- Cake Pop Eyeballs

For the cakes, you will need:

1 package cake mix, any flavor you like
1 cake pop pan (I use the kind that clips together. I know nothing about the automatic kind, sorry)
non-stick spray with flour. I use Baker's Joy, but Pam has one with flour in it also
1 3.9 oz package instant pudding mix
milk, oil, and eggs

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. The pop pan directions say 350, but my pan is dark and the pops burn if the temperature is that high.
To make the best tasting cake pops, if your cake mix calls for water, use milk, but only half of the amount called for. For example, if the cake directions say: 1 and 1/2 cups water, you would use 3/4 cup milk. Also add one additional egg. If the recipe calls for 3 eggs, use 4. These are the specific instructions that came with my cake pop pan, and really provides the best results.
In a large bowl, beat together the cake mix, instant pudding powder, eggs, oil, and milk; 30 seconds on low, 2 minutes on medium. This is going to be a very thick batter. Just be glad you aren't whisking it :)
Liberally spray the insides of both cake pop pans with the non-stick flour spray. Also spray the outside of the top pan, because the batter will rise through the holes and spraying it will REALLY aid in clean up. Trust me.
Fill your pans according to the directions, clip together, and put it in the oven for 25 minutes.
The batter will definitely bubble out of the holes in the top, so don't be alarmed when you see cake volcanoes in your oven. The scraps are perfectly edible. Yum yum.
Let the pan cool off for a few minutes before removing the cakes.
The cakes need to cool completely before they are frosted, usually an hour is fine.

Easy Do It Yourself Creepy Halloween Makeup To Use

Do It Yourself

The makeup kits in stores are cool granted but if you don't have a big budget, want something you can not find or really want to go all out I suggest using these easy tricks to make a truly creepy look.Weather you decide on being a zombie, vampire, ghost, or you get creative and design a who concept yourself I have seen some great beat up sports figures etc as costumes. The makeup can wow a mediocre costume anyone can buy a nice outfit you may be the fith zombie in the room so why not stand out from the undead. I have used these in the past and improvised on materials or what I found in my cabinet. You can make a quick costume that will wow and gross out others without buying a expensive costume.
I used this to do a pirate the makeup stayed on great wasn't as itchy as many other makeup kits I tried. I had one whole side of my face disfigured (picture Freddy kruger) and a deep slash in my thought. My story was my gun misfired during a fight. Sorry guys I ca a picture of it its somewhere in my house. I got a lot of cool reactions and a lot of requests to actually touch the scars they looked so real. I basically used stuff around the house only.

Warts, Moles and Growths

White school glue
Puffed wheat cereal, pompom balls whatever you can think of
Skin colored or brown makeup

Glue a piece of what you want on to your skin. Then let the glue dry. Once the glue is dry on your face cover the area with skin colored makeup. If you want warts, use black or brown makeup or face paint.

Wrinkles and closed Scars

school glue ( safe and non-toxic for use on skin)
Cereal or tissue paperWhite

To create wrinkles or somthing else in that range of scaley skin, clsoded scars and skin flaps simply skin. Decxide where you want it dampen paper or material with glue thinly tweak wet for drastic looks or go subtle by letting it dry and then lightly rub hand over it. Color how you want for skin tones foundation works well but zombies etc you could get creative.

Fake Blood

light corn syrup
Hot water
Red food coloring
liquid soap
Blue or green food coloring

Put some corn syrup into the bowl. Then add hot water while stirring, until its the consistency you want (not to watery). Next add some liquid soap (which will it easier to clean up). Add red food coloring to make it darker add a bit of blue or green.Use it for whatever you had in mind.

Bruises

Deep blue powder eye shadow
Charcoal powder eye shadow
Shimmering green powder eye shadow
A makeup brush, or other items to apply makeup even cotton balls work but are harder to do fine work with

Dampin makeup applicator slightly then dip it in blue, purple, or red eye shadow.
With fingertips or q tips add splotches of grey, black eye shadow and make areas darker.
Next put green powder around the outside. Finally smudge the entire area.

Open Wounds/ Scars

Clear gelatin
Hot water
Bowl
Spoon
makeup, Foundation or red food coloring
Sponges, q tips, or makeup brushes
Anything you want to add fake bone sticking out (put in before knox dry and make sure not to heavy) saftey pins etc

Mix gelatin and water in a bowl stirring until mixture is smooth but not watery you may add a little food coloring if you want. After the gelatin cools to room temperature, but still can be smeared and shaped mold the mixture on your skin in the shape you want. Take a break and let it dry completely.
Next pull out your moms, sister or whoever makeup or the stuff you bought. I first use reds purples and black to fill in the center the deeper the hole the darker you go lighten as you work outward from the wound. Next I use cover-up foundation its easier to get real skin tones most females have it then mixing costume paint. With a sponge start covering outside wound blending some red etc in it will make bruising etc look more real you may need to fiddle to get the color and depth just right. Use makeup to color in remember darker is more open area going lighter as work out until reach skin tone which can be achieved by using foundation makeup.
Now details such as safety pins you may want to have help with if you want to put them in the fake wound. Make sure you only have the formed gelitin on your skin hence the lumping/ gooping earlier. then place the pins through it. Tada you have a really gross and real looking scar wound.

Recipe:

1 tsp corn starch, 1/2 tsp water, 1/2 tsp cold cream, food coloring.

Directions:

Stir together starch and cold cream until well blended. Add water and stir, then add food coloring.

Application:

Wash your face and any area that you will be applying the makeup to. Dry thoroughly. Use fingertips to spread onto large areas. Use a small paint brush to paint designs on face. Removes with soap and water. Store in airtight container.
