To celebrate the May 20, 2013 Philippine premiere of the series “The ‘80s: The Time Of Our Lives,” National Geographic Channel threw a raucous ‘80s-themed party for members of the press, VIPs and their partners at Amber Ultra Lounge at The Fort Strip last May 7. Guests experienced a bit of time travel as they relived the ‘80s party scene in one of Metro Manila’s hottest 21st century clubs, totally transformed into an ‘80s disco just for the night.

National Geographic Channel pulled out all the stops to turn Amber into a time machine by deking it out with mirror balls, slinkys and reinforced lights to recreate the ostentatious vibe prevalent in ‘80s clubs. A bit of playful camp added to the retro feel, with guests being greeted by the venue’s façade customized to resemble a Rubik’s Cube, one of the most popular toys that emerged in the 1980s. Every sight and sound gave partygoers the distinct feeling of being back in that memorable decade, and this is exactly the atmosphere that National Geographic had so meticulously planned for its special guests.

The program fully embraced the fun “baduy” spirit of the 1980s, featuring a classic dance medley number set to unforgettable ‘80s hits. The host for the evening was none other than Philippine ‘80s icon JojoAlejar, who rose to fame as a regular cast member of the popular youth-oriented variety show “That’s Entertainment”. Deftly employing his stand-up comedy skills, he entertained partygoers with his wit while leading the night up to the party’s highlight, a special advanced viewing of “The ‘80s: The Time Of Our Lives,” a series that tackles the most significant events and people that marked the 1980s as a turning point in world history.

Premiering on the National Geographic Channel on May 20 at 10pm, “The ‘80s: The Time Of Our Lives” gathers and weaves together interviews from noteworthy personalities from the 1980s, including celebrities, innovators and media titans, to construct a collective narrative that shapes the biography of that revolutionary decade. Narrated by British actor Richard E. Grant, the series is a documentation of how people learned to live, work and play in completely new ways in the face of breakneck-speed innovation, glamor, success and ambition, which permeated the 1980s. It uses astonishing archiving and dramatic reconstruction to tell the story of the forces that rocked the world and determined our future.

Love Lust Faith + Dreams, the new album from Thirty Seconds To Mars, will be released today May 20 by MCA Music. To continue their efforts for all things running, adidas is back with its annual King of The Road (KOTR), one of the most anticipated races across Southeast Asia. The 10K Relay for Students is set specifically to encourage the youth to get into a healthy, active lifestyle and to give them a chance to represent their alma mater. Last friday night I was invited by my friend Rocky. We went to Tambayan for a gimik. We watched the gig of Paolo Santos, Tambayan's acoustic night. They have a great line up of acoustic artists such as Chris Cayzer, Vince Alaras, Lougee and more.

I personally liked the place because it's like home and it's not overcrowded.

The food was awesome, thanks to Ms. Margarett Estregan, the owner.

If I will have a friend who's going to ask where can I bring him over a gimik I would definitely recommend Tambayan sa kanto.

Veteran actress Bella Flores died

Veteran actress Bella Flores died earlier this morning. She was 84.

She was rushed to the Quezon City General Hospital by her daughter, Ruby Arcilla, and singer Imelda Papin. She was declared dead at 1:27 am.

According to Arcilla, her mom's condition had worsened ever since her hip surgery last year following a fall.

After Flores’ blood pressure crashed, doctors were able to revive her several times before she eventually succumbed.

"Sana po huwag niyo siyang kakalimutan," said Arcilla. "Sana po tumatak pa rin ang pangalang Bella Flores sa pelikulang Pilipino."

She started her career during the 1950s at the age of 14, and eventually became known for her portrayal of iconic villains.

She received a Best Supporting Actress trophy from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) in 1967 for her role in the film "Kaibigan Ko'ng Sto. Nino."

In 1989, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines.

Flores' wake will be held at the Loyola Crematory Chapel in Quezon City starting 7:00 pm Sunday.

Animated 3D Comedy Slated For July 1, 2016

Sony Pictures Entertainment has won the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the eagerly anticipated Angry Birds animated film, making it one of the most high-profile deals of the year. The 3D film is being developed, produced, and financed by Rovio Entertainment and will be released worldwide by Sony Pictures on July 1, 2016. Several major studios pursued the global film rights in recent weeks, with Sony Pictures Entertainment emerging as the winner.

Michael Lynton, Chairman & CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amy Pascal, Co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment jointly announced their partnership today. John Cohen and David Maisel – producer of Despicable Me and executive producer of Iron Man, respectively – are both on board for the new Angry Birds feature film. Cohen will serve as producer and Maisel is executive producer.

This Saturday, May 18, GMA’s drama anthology program “Magpakailanman” will dramatize Jessa’s story in an episode entitled, “Child Rape Video Scandal.” Actress Angelu de Leon will portray as Jessa, while Kyle Ocampo will play the role of Jessa’s sexually abused daughter.

Directed by multi-awarded director Laurice Guillen, the episode airs after “Vampire Ang Daddy Ko” on GMA-7.

FALL OUT BOY MAGIC ACCORDING TO CHICOSCI

Four years of recording hiatus could have affected the popularity of the Grammy award-winning Fall Out Boy in unfavorable way, especially with how music fans quickly turn over their attention to every exciting band act on the rise and eventually forget those who lay low.

That is not the case with FOB which still proved to be a force to reckon with after their latest single "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” immediately made an impact, lording the singles chart in the US in almost no time.

Their newly released album "Save Rock And Roll' debuted at number 1 in the US Billboard 200 albums list with sales of more than 150,000 units in just one week of hitting the market.

Here in the Philippines, the anticipation for the FOB return not only thrilled regular fans but also topnotch rock artists themselves. Premier Pinoy rock act Chicosci, who fronted for FOB when it first visited Manila in 2007, even made an effort to express their admiration for the group.

Collectively, they imparted juicy thoughts on their high regard for the Chicago native group comprising of Patrick Stump (vocals/guitar), Pete Wentz (bass), Joe Trohman (guitar), and Andy Hurley (drums).

Chicosci noted, "Fall Out Boy remains to be one of the biggest bands in recent history. Their hiatus has only brought anticipation for a reunion or a new album. Fans are expected to react positively to their return."

"Save Rock And Roll" is FOB's fifth studio album and their first since 2008. It debuted at number 1 on Soundscan as it also topped the iTunes ranking in, yes, 27 countries including the Philippines.

Lead singer Stump is being credited by Chicosci for the unpredictability of the band's material which resulted to fan excitement. They chorused, "FOB has been experimenting with their music over their last few albums. Main songwriter Patrick Stump is known to make songs beyond the 'realm of rock' and one can't really tell what kind of music FOB will be playing on an album."

They added, "We admire Patrick Stump's open-mindedness to different forms of music and incorporating them to the FOB context. He's a pretty cool dude."

When FOB launched their new single last February, tickets to their promo shows and tour since 2009 were sold out in record time.

It seemed they were terribly missed by their fans. So Chicosci, upon being queried of their view on the risk of taking a relatively long recording break, which to other bands may mean a permanent breakdown, they handed their good-natured perspective as rock artists with a long history of recording experience themselves.

"Sometimes," they argued, "it's good to step back and take a break from what you're doing. It keeps things fresh and new once you go back and start doing it again."

Both FOB and Chicosci are under the stable giant label MCA Music. The latter cherished the moment when they met their idols, describing the foursome as "very nice and accommodating" who "even went to see our set when we opened for them."

One wish by members of Chicosci is quite the obvious. That is, to work with FOB members in the studio.

Wade Robson, the Aussie choreographer who says he was sexually abused by Michael Jackson, has defended his decision to sue the performer's estate.

Michael Jackson has been accused of being a "pedophile" who abused a young boy from the ages of seven to 14.

Choreographer Wade Robson filed legal documents on May 1 asking for money from the Michael Jackson Estate in compensation for childhood molestation at the hands of the late pop star - who died of acute Propofol intoxication in June 2009 - and has now opened up about the alleged abuse.

Speaking on the Today show, Wade said he "was scared psychologically and emotionally completely unable and unwilling to understand that it was sexual abuse.

"This is not a case of repressed memory. I never forgot one moment of what Michael did to me.

"He performed sexual acts on me and forced me to perform sexual acts on him.

"It was complete manipulation and brainwashing. He would role-play and train me for these scenarios.

"There is no excuse for what he did to me, but he was a troubled man...The image that one presents to the world is not the whole explanation of who someone is.

"Michael Jackson was yes, an incredibly talented artist with an incredible gift. He was many things. And he was also a pedophile and a child sexual abuser."

While Wade - who was one of the witnesses at Michael's child molestation trial in 2005, and his testimony, along with those of his sister and mother, were said to be instrumental in the 'Billie Jean' star's acquittal - has been called a liar by Michael's friend and family for the new allegations, he insists he is telling the truth.

The married father-of-one said: "The idea that I would make all of this up and put my wife, my son, my entire family through this extremely stressful and painful experience all for the sake of money? That's completely incomprehensible.

"I've lived in silence and denial for 22 years...In order to fully heal, I have to speak the truth and I have to speak the whole truth."

6th Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

MSD and DOH go full circle for 6th Cervical Cancer Awareness

The Department of Health (DOH), in a public-private partnership with Merck Sharpe and Dohme (MSD) Philippines, is now on its sixth year of raising awareness and providing free cervical cancer screening programs nationwide.

For the sixth run of its Cervical Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) activities this May, both the DOH and MSD are going beyond just screening. This year, the awareness is going full circle—from prevention to treatment.

Free screenings will be conducted for women aged 25-49 years old in all 58 DOH-retained hospitals nationwide.

Furthermore, a launch of an HPV registry for monitoring and evaluation of disease burden will also be included in this year's CCAM, as well as the announcement of a PhilHealth Z benefit expansion to include cervical cancer.

The CCAM website, mahalagaka.com, will also be refreshed and updated to further awareness.

Vaccination, according to the DOH, will strongly be advocated during screening and throughout the entire month.
