Hey everyone!

I know I've been absent from this site for a long while. I really dropped the ball on updating on here, but hoping to get back to it and update a lot more often. Here's to keeping up with so many things!

I'll get right to it. Right now, my writing is stalled, but mostly because I've had to rework a lot of my drafts. Some, like Fluxion, had to get an entire section removed and redone. It sometimes feels like meticulous surgery being done on my WIPs and a lot of times, I have to step away and work on something else to get my ideas to convey onto the paper better. I've never really been much of an outliner or planner when it comes to writing. I have a ton of ideas flying about my mind but organizing them or getting them to untangle and make sense to others is the hard part. Writing linear has never been easy for me. But, somehow, I have gotten novels done, so I guess it works for me in whatever way it does. Sometimes, it just takes a bit longer to make sense of this mess inside my head.

What's going on with Renegades (Wicked Grove Book II)?

I know you guys are wondering when is Renegades going to release since I ended up cancelling the preorder. Lots of things happened at the end of this year, 2017, that tossed me into a terrible place and I got severely behind on all writing projects. Luckily, I've snapped out of the glum, though with any death in the family, it hits me out of nowhere now and then. Depression is a real thing and the despair can cause a real roadblock on the road to creativity.

But, on a brighter note, I'm back at it and working like made to gain the momentum back. I thought you all would love to have a snippet of the book to keep you primed for what's next. I seriously can't wait to get this out for you all. I am aiming for February, but there's no promises. Sorry! As life goes, nothing is guaranteed but surprises are always interesting.

Chapter One

“You’re kidding, right?” I got to my feet as four of the leaders of the Leagues of Unusual and Supernatural Creatures entered the brownstone I owned with my two brothers, Craig and Jay. This was our sanctuary and my brothers had invited these magicals into our space. Furious wasn’t the word to cover it, nor was I surprised enough to overcome what I was feeling.

Shocked. Stunned. Nauseous. Yeah, those fit a bit better.

“Relax. They know the rules. We meet on neutral ground. No magic allowed whatsoever and,” Craig eyed my weapons, lifting an eyebrow as he conveyed to me it was time to stashed them away. “No weaponry.”

“I don’t like the sound of this,” I mumbled as I sheathed my swords, rolled up my oiling kit and proceeded to stuff them into the broom closet. “This isn’t neutral ground, it’s our sanctuary. This is pushing it.” Clicking the door shut I turned and almost ran into Francesca, the leader of the vampire mafia. She gave me a sordid smile before handing me her coat.

“I find your home quite quaint.” Her fangs gleamed for a moment while she let her coat drop unceremoniously into my arms without even asking if I was doing a coat check. Groaning, I tossed her coat into the closet without hanging it. There was no way was I going to caddy for the supernatural leagues. The way they thought humans were beneath them was appalling and I wasn’t going to cater to them whatsoever. Not one bit. If Craig or Jay had a problem with it, they could speak to me directly.

Jay followed the group in and turned towards us, heading our way with a determination I didn’t want to know about. So far, this week had been the worst of my life. What was more bad news to add to the pile, right?

I pressed my lips into a taut line. Here it comes.

“The other leagues couldn’t make it. Scheduling conflicts and some are still making up their minds.” Jay announced.

Craig frowned. “Any of them closer to swinging our way in this conflict?”

Jay nodded, leaning close as the other four leaders settled into our living room. “Yes. Jessica Hyland of the Dhampirs and Isaac of the animal magi are supporters but couldn’t make it to this meeting. I told them I’d update them later.”

Craig lifted an eyebrow. “Jessica? How’d you get her to join in when her mother Francesca is here?”

Jay threw him a pointed look. “Do I need to spell out why she didn’t attend? It’s on rotating basis. Next meeting, Francesca won’t be here, and Jessica will. The meeting after that, Francesca’s son, Fedir, will attend.”

Craig nodded as he glanced toward the group sitting rigid in the living room.

“Well, this looks like a nice family reunion, so to speak,” I sighed. None of the present leaders were close friends of mine. If they wanted my support, they should’ve asked for a list of my own supernatural friends. “Can I make a suggestion?”

Craig tossed me a warning crossing his face. “Okay, but please think hard before you add them to the mix. It’s a delicate balance and I don’t want to mess it up before the first meeting begins.”

“Of course not. I was merely going to suggest that Marcella, the leader of the Unkai underground join us. She is a good friend and mentor to me, you know. She’d be a great buffer for this…. posse.” I stared at four of the leaders of the supernatural world. They were major players, yes, but we needed to consider including the minority groups too.

“Okay. Call her and she can join in whenever she arrives. We have to start now though.”

“Gotcha.” I pulled out my cellphone and dialed Marcella’s number by heart. I never kept any numbers in my phone, it was all in my head. Good thing my last encounter with a mind erasing faery clan who wanted to take over the world had left no long-term effects.

It’d left a crack in my heart, though. I inhaled sharply, closing my eyes as I leaned on the wall of the kitchen of our modest home. It’d hit me hard to lose Atieran, the faery king’s brother who turned out to be a fake mirrored-soul duplicate of the king himself. I didn’t dare show it; my brothers would call me out on letting myself get too close to someone I was pitted against. It’d been all my fault and I had the scars to prove it.

And there was more than just scars that showed off what remained after Atieran’s death. He’d done something to me; not just to my heart, its fascia cracked and torn, but he’d awoken something inside I’d never know existed.

“How would I even know if I have faery blood?”

“You wouldn’t unless you activated it.”

“How would I do that?” His eyes gleamed in the flashing strobes overhead. The red emergency lights barely illuminated the hall.

“With just one kiss,” he whispered,

I shivered, brushing the thought away as I slid down into one of the dining room chairs Craig had scraped across the wooden floor into the living room. Lost in thought, I felt a cool pair of eyes on me and peered up to find Francesca watching me, her lips slightly upturned while lifting her now full wine glass to salute me. Craig had been busying himself keeping the guests’ whims filled while I sat my arse down like a pampered princess.

I caught Craig’s arm as he offered up a tray of biscuits and tea to the others and jumped up to my feet.

“Give it here.” I snatched the tray and took it around the room as Jay returned and stood near the entrance of the room. He raised his hands and cleared his throat, capturing the attention of the group in an instant. I had to give it to him, he had presence. Lord help the person who ignored him, supernatural or not.

“Thank you all for attending this meeting. I know it was with short notice, but we find ourselves in desperate times.” He inhaled deeply, scanning each participant diligently while taking a centering breath. “My family: Craig, Amy, and I have been banished from the S.R.A. and we are no longer operatives of the Agency since they betrayed our trust and vowed to turn us over to a malevolent faery king. Together, we got away, and Amy successfully diminished the threat. Yet, we remain outcasts.

“In our time with the Agency, we came to notice many faults and inconsistencies within the Agency that didn’t adhere to their prime directive of maintaining harmony between the human and supernatural leagues of Wicked Grove. I’m afraid, we can no longer count on them to keep any of us safe nor will justice prevail if anyone is to end up in their clutches.”

“You’re telling us that all the leagues are in danger?” Francesca lifted an eyebrow, not sounding as concerned as her question would deem her to be. She lifted her wineglass, letting the fluid grace her lips before she replaced it onto the coffee table. Vampires didn’t need to eat or drink; it was all for looks and appearances. I briefly wondered if Craig had procured some blood for her comfort. She winked at me.

I frowned at her nonchalance.

“Yes,” Jay answered. “But we mustn’t go and attack the Agency without contingencies in place. They are powerful and…”

“So are we.” Nehemiah leaned forward, his frown deepening as moments ticked by. “How are we to trust them if their own agents do not?”

“We propose a reform of their rules and justifications. An overhaul. Retraining of all agents and new leadership,” I suggested.

“A takeover?” Oliver, the leader of the Nephilim perked up. He’d been solemn and quiet the entire time, neither partaking in any drinks or food. I often wondered if they required to eat or drink or it just wasn’t necessary.

I swore I heard my own stomach growl, but I ignored it, shifting in my seat. Hayden glanced my way for a moment before a knowing smile graced his lips. Damn these supernaturals with their obscenely good senses. He probably could hear my lungs working.

I hated being seated in the same room as people with hyper senses and no personal boundaries. It was akin to naked in the middle of a high school hallway in between classes. I’d give almost anything for someone to get me out of here before I decided to grab a pillow off the sofa and asphyxiate trying to disappear under it.

The sooner this meeting ended, the sooner I could head off to let Marcella know what was going on.

Let’s talk dragons, shall we?

Why don’t we see many dragons flying around or burning down cities?

Probably because they, just like us, have had to grow and adapt with time. Rise beyond the firebreathing image to something a bit more…

Maybe dragons exist and we just don’t know it. And that is the kind of thinking that led me to dragons as shifters in the story, Molten Heart.

Dragons belong just as much to the human world as we do. And really, calling it the human world might piss them off, because they think we’re a bit irresponsible with the world we’ve taken over. So let’s maybe just stick to calling it earth. It will make life easier on us all. Trust me. Most dragons are good, but piss off the wrong one….

Anyway. Back on point. Dragons could possibly be the very first breed of shifters. Over time as they grew and adapted with time, maybe they learned how to change forms. All creatures on earth have had to grow and adapt over the years or risk extinction. And though dragons might seem like the king of beasts, there is a greater beast on this earth that strikes fear into the hearts and minds of all creatures who share this planet… man!

Was that too preachy? Sorry. Moving on.

That leads us to the question of their (the dragons) nature. Are they beasts?

Are they thinking and feeling beings. And if the answer to both of those questions is, yes. What is dominant in them and how does it work when they shift between forms?

I’d have to answer that with turning it back around on humanity. We’re thinking and feeling beings who act absolutely beastly without shifting into a twenty-foot tall firebreathing creature, so why would a dragon who has the ability to swap forms be any different? In both their impressive drake form and in their tiny (by comparison) human form, the character is the same. Their minds stay intact as well as their ability to reason and understand their surroundings. It is merely their appearance, and fire-proofing, that alters.

Why do they change then, you might ask?

Well, who doesn’t want to be able to take to the sky? Admit it, if you could sprout wings, you would.

As far as my dragons are concerned, their drake form is their natural form. They take on the human guise to keep their truth secret from the savage humans who rape and pillage the earth they live on.

Humans are a pretty damn scary race!

But, that might be giving too much away. Let’s chat about more fun dragon facts, like what they eat.

My Dragons are actually omnivores (because of their dual forms) but because of their massive size need more protein than their human counterparts. That of course leads to quite a bit of meat consumption. They’ll eat pretty much anything that moves. Sheep, cow, pig, etc… Fish too, for the water variety (the hydras). And when you have a colony of dragons around, there had better be quite a bit of available food.

How much do they eat?

Well, that’s a great question. On the island they live on herd of wild sheep and ponies are pretty prevalent so that is the natural meal of choice for a dragon on the hunt. Bunny en flambé though is a favorite snack. Food is energy for the dragons, not an indulgence. Participating in the circle of life (cue the Lion King music), means that the dragons only take what they need when they need it. Could a dragon glutton himself on six or seven fully grown mountain goats with a side of squirrel every day? Of course they could. But eventually overhunting leads to extinction, and they know that. They are thinking and feeling creatures, remember.

On average, a male drake will sustain themselves on one meal a day consisting of two to three large prey animals.

I know what you’re saying. Dragons are fantasy creatures. They cannot exist in nature. Why are you spending so much time pretending that they’re real?

That’s my job. As the author I have think of all the little details and physical attributes necessary to validate my dragons. Even if all of these details do not end up in the final story, the world and character building has to be there first. Laying the foundations so that I can tell you a believable story. Do I think dragons exist? Doesn’t matter. But if for one second, just one, I can make you suspend your belief, then I have done my job!

Michael K. Rose is an author who is near and dear to me. He's my critique partner, co-writer and an amazing author. Most of my stories go through his scrutinizing eyes to perfection before publication. He writes gritty Sci-fi, fantasy and Paranormal. Prolific as heck. I got the privilege of meeting him at Phoenix Comic Con a couple years ago and we'll be at that same con this May signing books together! If you love a variety of addictive speculative fiction, he's the one to read.

Interview with Author Michael K. Rose:

Tell me a bit about your story.

“Brutality” is the story of a young man living on a remote island that is terrorized by dragons every generation or so. It’s written as a first-person narrative, because I wanted the reader to experience the dragon attack through his eyes. My stories generally tend to be pretty fast paced, and “Brutality” is no exception. Once the action gets going, the tension doesn’t really let up until the climax.

Are there any aspects of dragon lore—and, subsequently, modern dragon fiction—that you particularly like or dislike?

I like the idea of dragons as manifestations of certain human traits, and it’s something my story touches on. Think of the Norse story of Fafnir, the dwarf who is transformed into a serpent or a dragon by his greed. In this aspect, dragons are similar to many other creatures of folklore and literature: the vampire, the werewolf, even Frankenstein’s monster. All these creatures reflect the darker things lurking below the surface of our rational human minds.

Are you fond of films like Dragonslayer that depict dragons as mindless, violent animals, or do you prefer your dragons with a bit more intelligence and, perhaps, kindness?

I like both, and there is room for both. While historically, dragons have had very specific roles in human culture, modern writers and audiences have adapted the idea into something much more expansive. The same has been done with the creatures I mentioned a moment ago: vampires and werewolves. And perhaps because they started as aspects of the human psyche, it’s only natural to see ourselves in them and, in many cases, make them heroes in their own right. That being said, I wanted to make this story’s dragons fit the more traditional narrative, although they do have intelligence, which is something the islanders in “Brutality” have to contend with.

First off, let me introduce David Jones. He writes fantasy and whatnot. A total nerdigan, I know because I got the privilege of meeting him at Palm Springs Comic Con. He's the one to hit up if you're a video game addict.

Interview with Author David Jones:

Tell us a bit about your story.

The Sky Hunter is a sci-fi military story that introduces us to Ilana, a human warrior who was raised by the Ociel, a race of dragon people, on their islands in the sky. Her past is a mystery, even to her, and that’s partly because of the Ociel, so she resents them. Ilana is relatively new to being a Sky Hunter, and wears a special suit of armor called the Aether Suit that allows her to keep up with her fellow warriors. She descends to the surface world, which is absolutely foreign to her, with the intent to fulfill this final mission for the Ociel elders, and then go off on her own. This story essentially blends Metroid, Mega Man X, Jurassic Park, dragons, and Little Shop of Horrors together in really fun ways, and Ilana is by far the strongest, most badass character I’ve written to date.

Have you written any other dragon stories?

The first book I ever wrote is called Onyx The Half Hero Dragon. It’s still unreleased, but it’s a story that I’ve always loved. I’ve grown a lot as a writer since I started work on Onyx, which has had a ridiculously long development history, but I have every intention to release Onyx by the end of the year. Onyx The Half Hero Dragon is a coming of age story about a young bionic dragon who grew up on a mythic island, and was raised by a mechanical engineer named Sheila. They set out to explore the island they live on to hunt down components for a powerful new weapon, and quickly find themselves caught up in war. There's much more to the story, obviously, but I'm not about to spoil everything here.

Will there be a sequel to The Sky Hunter?

To introduce you to the authors, I'm posting an interview a day so you can get to know not just me, but all these amazing authors who joined me in creating this mesmerizing collection

First off, let me introduce Jenna Elizabeth Johnson. She writes dragons in some of her stories already, so if you want more, she's got more for you.

Interview with Jenna Elizabeth Johnson:

Tell me a bit about your story.

Flame and Form tells the story of Brienne, a Faelorehn woman from the Otherworld and Dorran, a draghan shape-shifter from Firiehn, a neighboring realm. Brienne is on the run, having recently escaped a life of slavery from the Morrigan, the Celtic goddess of war. While passing through a small town, she gets the opportunity to help a captured draghan. Knowing the creature will probably end up in the Morrigan’s hands, she sets aside her own plans of escape in order to take the draghan out of the reach of its tormentors. It isn’t too long, however, before Brie discovers this draghan is really cru-athru, a man of Firiehn who can take draghan form. This story began as a retelling of Beauty and the Beast (a favorite tale of mine), but soon started to develop its own personality. There are still the common themes of a man taking beast form, and looking past the outer self and seeing the beauty within, but Flame and Form also introduces elements from my Otherworld universe as well.

Dragons are inherently magical; they cannot exist in nature. That being said, did you give any consideration to natural or physical limitations when you were dreaming up your dragons? Why or why not?

The setting of my story is a land rich in magic, so it wasn’t a far leap for me to incorporate a magical creature. The people of the Otherworld and Firiehn have glamour, fae magic, and can utilize it in different ways. Dorran, my dragon character, uses his magic to take draghan form and breathe fire. Despite the fact that my characters wield and use magic as part of their natural existence, there are limits to how much they can use and if they use too much, they need to rest and recharge before they are at their best once again.

How many average-sized adult sheep do you think the dragons in your story would have to consume per day?

Unfortunately, Dorran, my dragon character, isn’t a huge dragon. When he is in his beast form, he’s about the size of a Clydesdale or Shire horse. So I would say, if he were to stumble upon a hillside full of sheep on an empty stomach, he might be able to consume one of them. Though, I bet he’d be too stuffed to take flight afterward for at least an hour.

The dragons in your story are shapeshifters. In many shapeshifter stories, people lose their humanity while in their animal forms; werewolf tales are a well-known example of this. Do your dragons retain all aspects of their humanity when in dragon form?

This is a good question, and the way I usually approach characters in my stories who have the ability to shapeshift is that they retain enough of their humanity not to go entirely feral. I like the idea of the animal side of them lending their sharpened instincts to either form (because if they don’t go a bit wild, what’s the point of turning into an animal?). In Flame and Form, my shifter characters take on all the aspects of being large, fire-breathing reptiles. They are fierce, they are strong, they are naturally graceful. They recognize the human (or in my case, Faelorehn) woman who is their friend, but they also have no trouble identifying the enemy and treating them as such. I didn’t spend a lot of time on this subject in Flame and Form, but I do hope to explore it further in future books.

Tell me about some of the other dragon stories you’ve written.

I have one other series that directly features dragons as important characters, and that is my Legend of Oescienne series. The Oescienne books are appropriate for younger readers (10 years old and up) and they tell the story of a human infant found and raised by dragons in a world where her kind no longer exist. The dragons in this series are highly intelligent and capable of speech (in fact, Hroombra, the dragon mentor to my girl hero, Jahrra, was responsible for tutoring the human children of the royal family from long ago). This series is an epic fantasy adventure along the lines of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Eragon. There are currently four full-length novels and one short story collection in the Legend of Oescienne series, with the fifth and final book in the works. The titles of the books are The Finding (Book 1), The Beginning (Book 2), The Awakening (Book 3), The Ascending (Book 4), and Tales of Oescienne. The Finding has recently been made available in audio format.

Will there be a sequel to Flame and Form?

Yes! I have this terrible habit where, if I start a shiny new story, it usually decides to grow into something larger than a single book. I do have plans to write at least two follow-up novellas to take place after Flame and Form. No set publication dates yet, but hopefully one or both of them will be out before the end of the year. It all depends on how busy my other writing projects keep me.

If you could take one of your characters to a book event to help you sell books, who would it be and why?

I’ll go ahead and pick someone from Flame and Form since this book is the one featured in the new anthology, A Plague of Dragons. Let’s see… I would bring all my characters if I could, and although I think Mynne (Brienne’s blind, spirit guide wolf) would be a fun addition to any event, I’m going to have to go with Dorran. In his Firiehn form, he’s a ruggedly handsome, tall, dark-haired, flame-eyed man; a warrior from a realm of magic. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wander over and get a picture with him? And if he wasn’t impressive enough in his more human form, he could shift into draghan form. A soot black draghan the size of a large horse who happens to breathe turquoise fire? Yeah, if I was attending a book event, that would DEFINITELY get my attention.

My review:

The Going South Anthology is a steamy, romantic, and funny collection of stories about finding love down under with some uber sexy men and sensual women. All the stories give a sweet yet hot, tummy fluttering heat level that keeps a reader wanting more and loving the oh so satisfying endings. This is a collection you must read if you're into romantically funny tales with a steaminess that's perfect.

My favorite tales in this collection were Dared, Finding Love Down Under, and Playing for Keeps. These had great characters, awesome backgrounds, dilemmas, and lovely to read. It's enough to keep a reader all hot and bothered! I loved each story, and they were a nice change from the normal romances out there; each one a quick, tasty morsel that makes you want to read more by these highly talented authors. Check it out, well worth the read.

A Dark Journey into the Light was a lifetime in the making and more than 2 years in the writing. One of the biggest issues in life is sex and people usually make a choice. They either follow their desires, or they don't. This book looks at the issues that arose, and the conflict of emotions I had to deal with when I chose both, although it more correctly felt like they chose me. Life became an exercise in learning about myself by exploring what "lies beneath" as it reared it’s head and found it’s way to the surface. There was no way around the exploration because the battle for supremacy raging between the two was inside me. What was the war all about and what would become of me? This book is about my journey of continuing self-discovery as I move through the mystery we call life.

The book is an autobiography so it's pretty much all about me and who I am. I suppose there are a few small things that aren't covered. For instance, I like dogs and horses and I love gardening. I'm a country boy and grew up with spiders and snakes, and although I'm not keen on spiders if one crawls up my trouser leg they don't freak me out either. A snake up the trouser leg though would be a different story! Think “a hillbilly version of River Dance.” I love long hikes over the mountains or across the plains. Just as long as I'm walking somewhere, but at times I wonder if I'm just trying to leave something behind.

A Dark Journey into the Light is an interesting and thought provoking book for anyone who has ever questioned urges and desires familiar to us all. It provides interesting insights into the workings of the mind of a sex addict. We are much more than what we feel, and less than what we think. This book explores the healing that is possible when we find balance between the two.

This is the story of my life. It has not been fabricated, exaggerated, or embellished in any way. It’s the raw truth and I’m not really sure why I’m writing it, but my therapist thinks it’s a good idea, and I can understand her reasoning about that. Writing down my life’s story might simply be a part of the healing process, so I can finally move on with my life and live it like a normal person.

All my life I’ve wished for nothing more than just to be normal, as I’ve looked around and envied other people’s untroubled lives. At least that is how they appear on the surface. We can all be quite certain that most people harbor some secrets in their lives. Those secrets might be small things they regret or feel ashamed about. I wish people did not need to have secrets and live in fear and guilt about their lives, because most things people hide from are not worth the stress, but I guess I’m the same.

Maybe I should be able to shout from the rooftops, and tell the world I’m not afraid or ashamed of my life, but in my heart I know many people will stand in judgment of me. At the same time, I know deep down a lot of people would applaud my courage if I did so, even if their own fears prevented them from supporting me publicly. Therein lies the problem.

If you stand outside society’s norm you stand alone, through social judgment and fear. Maybe I should just include it all in the category of fear, and leave judgment out of it, considering all judgment has its roots in fear.

Fear; the prime mover for almost every expression in our lives. What would it be like to be free of fear?

Everyone has their problems, and people go through a great deal of pain and suffering. I personally know people I would not trade places with for anything on earth. We are all plagued by similar run-of-the-mill issues, such as marriage breakups, financial problems, health issues, and everything else that goes with living on this planet, as we try to coexist with a whole lot of people. With most of them we have almost nothing in common, except a pattern of similar reactions that maintain a reasonable level of “sanity” in society. And it is all bound in fear.

It doesn’t sound like much of a way to live, but if you question people about their lives and propose the idea that they are living in fear, almost all of them will disagree. Some will even become angry, and possibly violent, if you dare to start a debate with them on the issue. The cruel irony is they won’t see, even then, that their reaction to the idea of their lives being based on fear is in itself a fear-based reaction.

So why don’t I tell people about my life? Why don’t I stand up, step out of the shadows society creeps around in, and put my trust in people to accept my life?

Simple. People cannot be trusted.

Everyone knows this because everyone has a secret. The only variable is the size of the secret, and mine would attract a massive excess baggage fee if I packed it in a suitcase and boarded a plane.

I’ve experienced, or still do to some degree, all those problems I spoke about: divorce, health, finance, and so on. I’m not saying my life is difficult in the main, and in fact I often count myself lucky, giving thanks for my life and the many things I enjoy, because unlike some others, at least I have my health. I can walk, talk, eat, see, and hear. I also have a brain that works well enough, which gives me the opportunity to make something of myself, and do something with my life. I really cannot complain, so what makes my life so different my therapist thinks it’s a good idea to write it down?

I don’t think the aspect of my life in question is particularly unusual, or different, from that of a large percentage of the population, so I guess it comes down to a question of degree and scope. When I consider those factors I can’t help feeling my life has been a little unusual to say the least, and a lot unusual to “say the most”.

There’s no doubt my life could, and would, be summed up by a lot of people with words like sick, deviant, gross, pathetic, abhorrent, disgusting, depraved, and so on.

These words are not new to me. I’ve tarred myself with every one of them over the years, and nobody else could project the depth of feeling in them more strongly than I have against myself. That projection evoked feelings of shame, guilt, unworthiness, and self-loathing that cannot be imagined. Even if I told you it’s impossible to imagine the things I’ve done, and then gave you a hint, you still would not guess at the depth and breadth of my life experience.

I’ve written about this in a way that tries to depict how I felt at the time and how I feel now, and can only use words or terms that make that possible. This book is not for the prudish or faint-hearted, so if you like your reality painted over and sugar-coated, then this is not for you, and I suggest you make a nice cup of tea and watch re-runs of Days of Our Lives instead.

I’m not complaining about my lot, and in some strange way I have even come to appreciate it after all this time. All I want now is to make some sense of it and possibly enrich the remainder of my life, and maybe even help someone else with theirs.

It all seemed to begin harmlessly enough as a young child in primary school but when I was a young teenager, an innocent conversation with my mother raised the idea in me that my turbulent, obsessive journey had actually begun when I was just a baby. I explore this in chapter 5.

In time I had no doubt about this, and it often led me to wonder whether it was some kind of karmic load I was unloading, or if I was building up a karmic load that would crush the life out of my soul.

This question would plague me throughout the decades to come, but whatever the explanation, I was powerless to do anything about it. All I could do was hang in, and hang on, as I plunged headlong through a chaotic world of sensory self-gratification.

Where do I even start to give someone an idea of the duality of the life I have lived for as long as I can remember? There is that old cliché about starting at the beginning, and it may be right, but let’s just skip ahead for a moment, because honestly, if I’m going to write this down I don’t have time for norms or clichés.

Skipping ahead will also give me a clear reminder of why I’m writing this, and what I’m writing about. I’ll come back later and try to join some dots to give a clearer picture of what it always felt like to me: a life unlived. Is that too dramatic, to call it a life unlived? I lived something, didn’t I?

We all have some notion of what life should be like, or what we wish it was like, but in my mind and heart my life never measured up to any of my wishes. It just never felt like living. It felt like I was trapped in some kind of time warp, or parallel universe, where I could only watch my life happening around me as though it was someone else’s. But it is what it is.

Ooops, that sounds like a cliché.
