Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

I know everyone is busy today watching the Men's Tournament AND the Women tip-off today as well. Just wanted to write a few notes on the Tournament.

First, however, I wanted to get you my new video that I completed last night on shooting drills. This video is the second part of a three part series on shooting drills (the first part video will be at the end of this email as well).

Today in the video I wanted to focus on partner shooting drills which includes quite a few catch and shoot drills. As you might remember from my first video on shooting drills, I really believe it isn't always the drill that "makes the player" but it's what you do inside that drill that really matters (mechanics and form).

That being said, my shooting drills are not complicated. I just don't believe in dribbling through ten chairs to shoot a basketball OR dribbling a tennis ball with one hand and shooting with another. I believe a player need to shoot in a drill how he/she will shoot in a game.

Now lets talk about the Tournament. Why is there so much Madness this March? Why are there so many upsets and high seeds taking low seeds down to the wire?

Last week I was listening to Collin Cowheard on ESPN Radio and he predicted this. He said many of the big name schools struggle with shooting (Ohio State, Cincinnati, North Carolina) and that these teams would be out in the first or second round.because of their inability to shoot.

I have always said that shooting is the great equalizer. Twenty years ago we would see maybe one or two upsets in the first round but nothing like this!!!

I believe this really goes back to the three point line. We are now getting Mid-Major players that have grown up on the three and have used the art of shooting to help them get that coveted scholarship and stand out on their teams. We are also seeing Mid-Major coaches that know how to use this three weapon to take down Goliath.

We have also seen how important free throw shooting is at this year's tournament. North Carolina State couldn't hit their free throws and they are now at home. Stanford hit two big free throws late against New Mexico and they will play another game..

When I watch the tournament, I am always amazed at how the close games in the last two minutes come down to two areas--offensive rebounds and free throw shooting. How many times have we seen a team up by three and the other team comes down, misses the shot but gets the offensive rebound, kicks it out and now we have a tie game? I see it all the time.

The charity stripe is huge this time of year. Two games that are hard to forget in NCAA history is how Kansas couldn't buy a free throw against Syracuse in the 2003 Finals and seeing Memphis struggle five years later against Kansas in the 2008 Finals.

Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

I am always fascinated with the workings of the human body. I am always trying to find a "secret" or a finding that can help it work better, perform smoother and make it run faster. I like to also believe I am an out of the box thinker AND I am always willing to change my beliefs to make my players become better and more athletic players.

A few months ago I came across Chong Xie through a basketball shooting group on Facebook. I started talking to him and realized not only is he incredibly smart, but his theories can revolutionize the way the world looks at athletics.

I endorse very few things to my coaching friends and players. I don't believe in shooting contraptions for the most part. Already in this March series I endorsed the book, "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle (some of you read it and wrote back that it changed the way you look at training and athletes). Today I give my full support to Chong Xie and his website (www.secret-of-athleticism.com) and book "Secret of Athleticism."

If you have some time today please visit the links below. One is a great 8 minute interview with Chong and BBall Breakdown that came out only two days ago. Also please visit his website (the link is provided below). Both the website and interview explain that a basketball player CAN prevent injuries to the ankle and CAN improve on speed and quickness.

A little bit about Chong's findings in his words: "My research reveals there is a very subtle mode of the foot no doctors talk about it today which locks up the ankle naturally to prevent ankle sprains and at the same time allows the gluteus maximus to engage properly.

Elite basketball players like Lebron James, Ray Allen, Kobe, MJ use this special mode at a subconscious level. It's exactly like what you have described the sweep and sway. Players do it subconsciously without noticing it! But it exists!"

Chong believes we all were born to walk on on the balls of the feet. Toddlers don't learn to walk on their heels. Through time, however, we unfortunately model our feet to go along with the heel. We get used to the shoe and where does the normal basketball shoe have all of it's padding? In the heel of course.

As athletes get used to the shoe restraints, a VERY high percentage start walking on the heel, running on the heel and even sometimes making basketball cuts on the heel. There are some athletes that can overcome the shoe and still are able to walk and run using the balls of their feet.

Think of a track shoe and how a track shoe lacks any kind of heel. Track sprinters run 100% on the balls of their feet. Recently Nike approached Kevin Durant and asked him, "in your new shoe, what would you like us to do with it? Any thing special you would like to see that would be different." Durant responded back, "What about no heel. I never use my heel when I play." Durant may have the best feet in the game.

Chong believes a player must lock the ankles while running on the balls of the feet forcing an almost "bouncing" motion. When this occurs, the Glutes are engaged forcing the player to become quicker and more agile. I have seen results in a matter of minutes, though permanent results takes weeks in an athlete.

Locking the ankle also allows less chance for injury prevention. We have all had the athlete that constantly gets ankle sprains and strains. Why is this occurring? There are many coaches that believe that a player that gets injured a lot is just "unlucky." I truly believe along with Chong that the athlete continues getting injured simply because he/she is not locking the ankle when cutting and running. I also believe it can help the knee region as well.

Lastly, I train a Division I mens basketball player in New York City that has been prone to injury and is not a great athlete (he's a 6-4 shooter). After working with Chong for 90 minutes he returned to practice the next day and his coaches said, "You're running differently. You look more active. You are bouncing when you run." He had not told them that he was training with Chong.

This really does work!!!!

Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

One of the best ways I believe you can improve a player's shooting percentage is by correcting your misses. I believe this holds true for everyone from the first time player to the professional veteran player.

I believe that one of the reasons players see limited improvement is because they just shoot to shoot and hope that by shooting alone and getting up a lot of reps they will improve. While this is true, they will improve a little bit, the improvement is based on experience. A more efficient way to improve would be for a player to recognize which direction they miss the most and correct it. I bring up this in my camps and it fascinates me at how many players have no clue HOW they miss. They just know they miss.

There are four ways to miss. That's it. Four. Not one. Not hundreds. Not endless ways. Just four. The four ways to miss are:

1. Left
2. Right
3. Short
4. Long

The key here is when you are shooting and miss you record the direction of your miss. When you do this regularly, you will see trends. Some players will see that they miss right more than any other direction and some will miss short more than any other direction. Once you find the direction you miss the most you must then correct it. The way you correct it is by working on certain techniques to correct certain types of misses.

LEFT & RIGHT MISSES:

Left and right misses are generally a result of a poor release, bad offhand/guide hand, poor body alignment, or bad balance on a shot.

ARE YOU A BADD COACH?

Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

I'm a BADD coach and I hope everyone reading this is a BADD coach. The BADD that I am speaking about today is an acronym that stands for:
Believe
Apply
Detail
Discipline

Shooters need to be BADD, but I also believe coaches need to have these qualities as well. This especially works when teaching shooting. If you lack any of these aspects while teaching the art of shooting, chances are your players will revert back to their old shooting form.

Let's focus on each of these aspects of BADD and see if you are currently using them in your day to day coaching. Please understand that BADD is not just about the Pro Shot Shooting System, but it can also be used for any basketball fundamental or everyday functions in life (marriage, raising children or your job).

BELIEVE:
To take from an often used quote: "If you don't believe it, you can't achieve it." Belief is huge in coaching and nowhere is it more important than in the art of shooting. Here are the four areas that you must believe in if you want your players to be accurate shooters:
1) Shooting is important.
2) Shooting mechanics are important.
3) Players CAN improve in shooting.
4) The shooting aspects that you are teaching is working.

If you don't believe in any of the four aspects above, it will be impossible to teach your players to be accurate shooters. As a coach, you must "buy in" 100% and believe.

True belief is not about "buying in" half the time. Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley once said, ""There are only two options regarding commitment. You're either IN or you're OUT. There is no such thing as life in-between." I also believe this can be said in regards to believing as well.

APPLY:
Once you are a true believer in what you are teaching, it is now time to teach the Shooting System and components. DETAILED:
The best coaches are detailed oriented. I once asked former UCLA point guard Andre McCarter what made John Wooden so great as a coach. Andre smiled and said, "That's easy. His attention to detail. When we ran the break we had to do it perfectly. Six inches one way or the other way and few would notice, but Wooden would."

When you look at the greatest coaches over time, you will notice that one characteristic is always noticeable. Think of the greatest coaches and managers of all-time-Tony Larusso, Bob Knight, Pat Summit, Mike Krzyzewski, Vince Lombardi, Red Auerbach, Phil Jackson and you will clearly see that they were all detailed as a leader.

When teaching the Pro Shot System or any other system (offense or defense), a coach must be detailed about how he/she is teaching the skill. As important, when a player is doing it wrong it is crucial for that coach to immediately identify the problem and correct it. Having great attention to detail is an important quality that coaches need to have.

DISCIPLINE
Last but definitely not least is discipline. This may be as big or bigger than any component listed. A coach that lacks discipline is basically allowing the "inmates to run the asylum."

We have had some coaches that have implemented the Pro Shot System with their teams and many programs have gone on to break team shooting and scoring records. I get emails all the time that speak of incredible shooting improvement. Then there are other teams that don't improve like they should.

So why does one team improve more than the other team. Is our instruction different? Are we teaching shooting aspects differently to one team than to the other? Of course not.

The main reason for one team showing great improvement and the other NOT showing great improvement is usually based on discipline from the coach. Players will generally only change a habit over time if they realize by not doing it correctly there will be disciple and possible further ramifications.

Recently I spoke with various coaches who are BADD, use the Pro Shot System and have excellent shooting teams. I asked, "So why do you have so much success in teaching this?" They all responded that they believe in the System, they teach the System, they are detailed, but the biggest factor was that they stayed on their players constantly. Many mentioned, "If they don't shoot it how we teach it, they run or do push ups." Some even went so far to say, "If they don't do it our way, they don't play."

I truly believe disciplined coaches succeed in teaching and implementing the System and "nice guys" that lack discipline don't succeed. Last year I had a coach from Texas called me and said, "My girls aren't doing the System. I responded, "What are their penalties if they don't do it?" He paused and finally said, "There are no penalties. I just remind them." That coach unfortunately didn't understand that his players would not change because he lacked discipline.

WRAP UP
I really like the acronym BADD because you can have fun with it (go up to a good shooter on your team and say, "You know what, you are a BADD shooter) and it's easy to remember. I truly believe all great coaches have these four qualities AND being BADD is what it takes to make your team into great shooters.

Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

One question I get constantly is: "What shooting drills should I use?" and "What is the best shooting drill?"

Many coaches are in love with shooting drills so I decided to give into the pressures and make a three part series on shooting drills. Below is a link to the first video--Part I of this series.

Here's the funny thing about this -- I really am not a big fan of shooting drills. I mean, they are ok and they serve a purpose, but a high percentage of parents, players, trainers and coaches fail to realize that the drill is simply a component of shooting and is not what makes the shooter.

Not following me? Think of it like this-- In 2004 I was running a basketball training program in Calgary, Canada and had a coach in the program who was in love with shooting drills. Every night he would go home and download two or three shooting drills from the internet. After a few weeks, he had over 100 drills. The funny thing about it was his players could not shoot a lick.

That coach (we will respect his anonymity) did not fully understand that the drill does not make the player. It is what you do inside that drill that determines basketball shooting success. Drills don't generally give a player mechanics. What they give that player is a great amount of shots at high speed in different situations.

In the Part Episode I discuss the importance of muscle memory in drills and correcting your players through discipline. The most important aspect that I speak about, however, is the difference between RESULT and PROCESS drills.

Most drills that coaches use are Result driven. It is about making the shot. "First one to 10 makes is a winner." Most of the time there is little if any shooting instruction that goes along with the drill. The player is so focused on making it and the number that they lose any focus whatsoever.

I am a huge fan of Process Drills which is focused more on the mechanics and correcting the mechanics than making it. An example of process shooting is saying, "I don't care if you make it or miss....Just focus on shooting it straight" OR "Lets make sure we are not short today."

When players hear this, they focus greater on the shot and make more shots. It really makes a great amount of sense. Lets focus on college basketball players for example. The #1 way a college basketball player misses is short. I would estimate as much as 60%+ of all shooting misses at the college level are short. So why not focus on NOT missing short? It should be a no brainer.

The last part of drill shooting I want to discuss today is based on survival shooting--shooting a basketball to the point of total exhaustion. I have a friend who is a trainer in Southern California who believes basketball shooting is not about mechanics but shooting until you are ready to pass out. The problem with this mindset is that it destroys young players (grades 4-8) and can damage many high school players as well.

Survival training is very common with trainers. This might work at the NBA, WNBA or college levels, but if you do this to a young player, the shooting mechanics will suffer. Young players cannot shoot a large number of shots while going as fast as they can for a long period of time because they lack strength, endurance and basketball mechanics as a whole.

If a younger player needs to work on his overall conditioning, he should never do an activity that requires great hand eye coordination and a focused discipline like shooting.

If a young players need conditioning, they should run extra sprints or do full court ballhandling, but should not use "survival mode" shooting. This training can only assist older and more advanced shooters.

Great shooters need to be pushed when it comes to cardio vascular work. Notice I said the word GREAT. Not average, not young, but great.

If a young, inexperienced or poor shooter shoots until exhaustion, the mechanics will quickly disappear. I have seen players lose their shooting form by focusing on survival training.

Dear Coaches, Parents and Players,

Recently I was talking with a coaching friend of mine Herb Welling and we were discussing Jeff Van Gundy's belief of how to evaluate players. We call it the negative S's. Van Gundy, former Knicks Head Coach and current ABC broadcaster, says there are three negatives to look for in players and teams when evaluating them: "Soft, Selfish and Stupid."

Herb and I agree that Van Gundy is 100% correct in his evaluation beliefs. Whether you use this evaluation formula for short term as in scouting or holding tryouts OR long term as in evaluating your players and your team as a whole, this can definitely be a good barometer for a coach to use.

Van Gundy believes that you can work with a player that has one of these deficiencies, but it is impossible for a player to excel that has two or more of the negative S's. He also believes a team that constantly displays one of these negatives is doomed for mediocrity. A team that displays two or more is doomed for disaster.

Herb informed me that he has developed the Positive S's which a coach wants to look for when evaluating players and teams. Welling's Positive S's are: "Skilled, Smart and Strong."

When I look at great players, they usually are always skilled, have great smarts for the game and are usually strong mentally and physically. If you have all three components you will be VERY good on the hardwood. Possessing two should make you a competitor and one MAY get you some playing time.

Every year that I coached I wanted my teams to be skilled, smart and strong. I never put these ideas on paper like Herb has, but in the back of my mind I knew success was built on skilled, smart and strong players.

My goal for this March Madness series is to share my 30 years in the game with the help of my many coaching friends like Herb.

I believe one aspect of basketball that has changed over the past three decades is the idea of sharing basketball knowledge from coach to coach. Even though we have more basketball knowledge at our finger tips thanks to YouTube and the internet, many coaches today don't talk philosophies to each other like they did back in the 80's which I believe is unfortunate.

There are no new ideas in the game of basketball. The best basketball minds are constantly borrowing (notice I didn't say stealing) ideas from their counterparts.

We are half way done with our March Madness series. If you have "borrowed" one concept that I have wrote about in the past 15 days, then I believe this series has been successful. Please let me know your thoughts always.

Many will say that the mid range shot (12-17 feet) is a lost art in today's game. They say that if they had a team that could accurately hit shots from the elbow, short corner, free throw area and any other spot on the floor from about 12-17 feet out that they would win significantly more games.

While I tend to agree and see where they are coming from the fact is that there still are players today who have a good to great mid range game. If fact, those players are some of the best players playing the game right now when you consider the NBA level, but I want to stop and reflect for a moment and shed light on an even bigger lost art.

Let's talk about a lost art that is something many coaches don't realize can be worked on to great lengths and help drastically improve player's and team's shooting. It's called MOVING WITHOUT THE BALL!

"Playing without the ball is a lost art. It's one of the most important but overlooked aspects in shooting. Most defenders aren't willing to chase players around the court. (Especially when they don't have the ball) Even an average shooter can become a threat by playing well without the ball. " -Glen Rice

Coaches. Do you teach and breakdown the movement of a player without the ball?

No, I'm not talking about showing the flow of an offensive play. I'm talking about taking time to teach players the different kinds of cuts they can make both toward the basket and away from the basket.

Do you take time to teach players different types of screens that can be set in order to free up a teammate?

When we look at some of the all time great shooters like Reggie Miller, Chris Mullin, Larry Bird, Ray Allen, and Michael Jordan just to name a few I believe we often remember how good they were at shooting and forget how great they were at moving without the ball.

How many times do we remember a player like Ray Allen hitting a clutch 3 pointer but forget the 5 screens he ran off of to get open to hit the shot?

I believe that moving without the ball is one of the most important factors in becoming a great shooter. Players today have made this a lost art with the popularity of AAU basketball. Just look at the University of Kentucky's games from earlier this season up to now. A lot of the early season games featuring their highly recruited freshmen players looked like an AAU All Star game where they would pass the ball and then stand and watch the player they just passed it to or pass and jog to a spot on the floor not expecting to get the ball back. Coaches, next time you catch yourself seeing your offensive players standing around, instead of yelling "don't stand" and expecting your players to start moving and showing some life, let's stop ourselves and teach them how to move, where to move, and how to become a greater threat. Having a great shooter on the floor means nothing if you can't teach them how to get great shots.
