The mind-computing device with a brain implant, co-researched by a Carnegie Mellon University professor, has been successfully tested in four Australian patients for a year. A follow-up experiment in the United States is approaching.

Participants in this Australian study were paralyzed by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease - a neurological condition in which nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are gradually destroyed.

Five patients were considered for the experiment, but one was excluded for medical reasons. Four patients had the device implanted, and the investigator screened them for a year. The implant remains in place and is safe without causing major complications.

In the upcoming US trial, the team plans to consider three quadriplegic patients, starting this fall. The researchers will collaborate with Synchron on machine learning, to decode signals from the patient's brain and more accurately infer their intentions.

Mr. Konrad recognized the safety of the implantable device in humans for at least a year. However, he also commented that the study was not designed to compare the implant's ability to operate a computer with existing brain-computer interfaces.

"However, the simplicity of the device implantation as well as the safety of this technology has made a breakthrough for the more than 5 million paralyzed people in need of assistance," Konrad said.

The device will still need to go through several years of testing before it can be approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Đồng bào Cor ở huyện Trà Bồng được biết đến với nhiều nét văn hóa đặc trưng trong cách ăn, ở, mặc. Trong đó, văn hóa ẩm thực được nhắc đến khá nhiều, đặc biệt là món bánh lá đót.

Để làm bánh lá đót, đồng bào Cor phải đi cắt lá đót tươi. Đây là loại cây có lá thon dài, mọc nhiều trên núi. Lá đót được đồng bào nhiều vùng miền núi phía Bắc và miền Trung sử dụng để gói một số loại bánh, bông của cây này dùng làm chổi đót phổ biến.

Quá trình thu cắt lá đót cũng rất kỳ công. Lá đót phải được cắt vào buổi sáng, bởi khi mặt trời lên cao, nắng nóng sẽ làm lá cuộn hết vào bên trong, không thể gói bánh. Lá được dùng để gói bánh phải to bản, không bị rách. Lá không già cũng không non để khi nấu chín, bánh mới có được mùi thơm đặc trưng của lá đót. Sau khi đem về, lá được rửa sạch, trụng sơ qua nước sôi, rồi mới đem đi gói bánh.

Bánh lá đót là loại bánh không thể thiếu trên mâm cỗ trong các dịp lễ, Tết của đồng bào Cor ở huyện Trà Bồng. Hai chiếc bánh lá đót được buộc thành một cặp có ý nghĩa biểu tượng cho tình yêu thương lứa đôi.

Nguyên liệu gói bánh là nếp thơm do đồng bào sản xuất ra. Trung bình một kg nếp có thể gói được hơn 20 cặp bánh. Khác với bánh chưng, bánh tét, để làm bánh đót không cần phải ngâm nếp trước khi gói và không cần nhân bánh.

Khi gói, cầm ngửa lá đót, rồi quấn ngọn hoặc gốc lá đót vòng quanh ngón tay cái hai vòng để tạo hình chóp nón. Sau đó, lật ngược hình chóp nón đó, bốc nếp bỏ vào cho đầy. Tiếp tục nghiêng hình chóp có nếp và dùng tay quấn phần gốc hoặc ngọn còn lại của lá đót thành hai hình chóp là xong.

Bánh gói xong được buộc bằng dây lạt chuốt thật mỏng từ cây lồ ô. Hai chiếc bánh được buộc thành một cặp trước khi nấu. Điều đó có ý nghĩa biểu tượng cho tình yêu thương lứa đôi, được buộc lại với nhau và cũng là sự đoàn kết, yêu thương giữa người với người. Sau khi hoàn tất việc gói, bánh được cho vào nồi ngập nước, nấu trên lửa lớn khoảng 2 giờ đồng hồ, rồi vớt ra rổ để nguội là dùng được.

Trong kỹ thuật gói bánh, quan trọng nhất là vừa tay gói, không lỏng cũng không chặt. Chiếc bánh gói lỏng lẻo sẽ dễ bị vào nước trong khi nấu, làm nếp mềm nhũn, không theo khuôn hình, chưa nói đến vị bánh mà chỉ nhìn thôi, người thưởng thức cũng đã thấy mất ngon. Nếu siết dây chặt quá, bánh không nở hết được, hạt nếp trong lõi bị sượng và bánh kém đẹp hẳn do có ngấn trên mình.

Tuy lá đót có diện tích hạn chế nhưng khi đem gói bánh thì từ bánh tỏa ra hương vị hoang dã của núi rừng hòa quyện với hương nếp, ai đã một lần thưởng thức đều khen ngon và không thể nào quên. Dường như khi gặp nếp, lá đót tiết ra một chất men làm cho bánh có hương vị đặc biệt, thơm ngon mà các lá khác không thể có được.

Với đồng bào Cor ở huyện Trà Bồng, bánh lá đót có ý nghĩa tinh thần rất lớn nên luôn có trong các dịp lễ, Tết. Trong nhà, dù giàu nghèo thế nào, mâm lễ cúng dâng lên Yàng (thần linh) và ông bà tổ tiên mỗi dịp lễ, Tết đều phải có bánh lá đót.

Đồng bào Cor chọn lá đót không già cũng không non để khi nấu chín, bánh mới có được mùi thơm đặc trưng của lá đót.

Bánh lá đót cũng được đồng bào dùng đãi khách trong đám cưới, đám hỏi, tiệc gia đình, khách đến nhà… Khi đó, bánh sẽ được ăn kèm với cơm lam, thịt gà, thịt heo hoặc chấm muối ớt, muối mè đen…

Có thể nói, bánh lá đót thể hiện sự khéo léo và tinh tế của đồng bào Cor. Bánh lá đót không chỉ là một món ăn quen thuộc mà còn lưu giữ nét độc đáo trong văn hóa truyền thống được đồng bào Cor ở huyện Trà Bồng trân trọng, giữ gìn đến tận ngày nay.

Theo Hiệp hội Tâm lý Mỹ, nam giới bị vợ hoặc bạn gái bạo hành có thể gặp chấn thương tâm lý đáng kể, chẳng hạn rối loạn căng thẳng sau sang chấn (PTSD), trầm cảm, suy nghĩ tự tử.

Dù hầu hết các vụ bạo hành gia đình được báo cáo do nam giới thực hiện, ngày càng nhiều nghiên cứu cho thấy độ phổ biến của hành vi lạm dụng với nạn nhân là đàn ông.

"Trước những kỳ thị xung quanh hình tượng 'đàn ông yếu đuối' trong các mối quan hệ lạm dụng này, các chuyên gia sức khỏe tâm thần cảnh báo không nên coi nhẹ nhu cầu điều trị của nam giới đã trải qua bạo lực", tiến sĩ tâm lý Anh Anna Randle cho biết.

Theo khảo sát đăng tải trên Psychology of Men & Masculinity, tỷ lệ rối loạn căng thẳng sau sang chấn (PTSD) ở nam giới (do bạo lực gia đình) cao tương đương phụ nữ.

PTSD là những hồi tưởng mang tính thâm nhập, tái hiện sự kiện sang chấn quá mạnh trong quá khứ. Sự hồi tưởng này kéo dài hơn một tháng, bắt đầu trong vòng 6 tháng sau sự kiện. Triệu chứng bao gồm né tránh các kích thích liên quan đến sự kiện sang chấn, gặp ác mộng và ám ảnh. Nói chung, các sự kiện có thể dẫn đến PTSD thường gọi lên cảm giác sợ hãi, bất lực hoặc ghê rợn.
