While Reading a One-hundred-twenty-eight-year-old Book

Bought this collection of Bryant's poems at a thrift store. This book seems to have been published in 1889, and was presented to someone for her birthday on June 30, 1892. The message goes: "Wishing you many happy returns of your birthday!"

It was the late 19th century when there was not many advanced technologies or mass media (including books). I can imagine the people of the time obtained information through books or newspapers. However, information they could receive might have been limited, and they might not have had a television or a radio during this period of time. When I do some simple search on the internet, this information is found: "8XK became KDKA in 1920. KDKA received the first federal license and began broadcasting on November 2, 1920." I wondered what it might have been like for this person to receive this book, and what this birthday present had meant to her. I wondered if even this collection of poems might have been important information. I don't know if she even liked it or not. I wonder what it meant in the late 19th century to receive a printed book from someone? It might mean a lot different than now today, where there are so much information through millions of copies of books, magazines, websites, schools, etc.

While reading this book today in 2017, one hundred and 25 years after it was presented to someone for a birthday gift, I imagined a lot of things when these people were still living.

ハーフマラソンで私は2時間10分程度を走り続け、完走ができた。自分にとっては初めてのハーフマラソン参加であった。それまで走りの大会に出るときは、イヤホンを付け、音楽などを聞きながら走ったのであったが、今回はそういったものはやめようと思った。自分の内側の声でも聞いてみよう、と何となく思ったのだ。二時間ぐらいひたすら無心で走るのも貴重だとも思えてくる。走りは祈りに適している、という仮説をずいぶん前に自分の中で出してみて、そのまま誰にも告げないまま、長い時間が経過したが、やはりただ走る、ただ居る、ただ座っている、ということをしてみたいと思った。

何かを想うということは妄想であり余分なことだ、と曹洞宗の偉いお坊さんがおっしゃっていたのをテレビを通じて聞いたことがある。十年以上も前のことだ。「息と一つになる」「何も考えない」というのが禅の姿だという。自分がしていることは、さしずめ、「妄想」であり「余分」がほとんどかと思う。

21キロメートルほど走り続けるのだから、そんなに妄想する余地はないだろうと思われるかもしれない。しかし、妄想は確実に生じる。ちょうど自分には虫歯があって、この日の前日から急に痛み始めたが、そんな中でも走っている最中は、さまざまの妄想が発生した。

ハーフマラソンのあとの数週間は、私はちょくちょく本を読んだ。三島由紀夫の『仮面の告白』を読んでいた。この作品を私は二十年以上前に読んだ。自分はまだ学生で、三島や太宰などのような文学者になりたいと思っていた。実世界のことなど、気にしたこともなかったので、これはアイドル歌手になりたがる幼稚園児か小学生のようなものだった。そんな四半世紀前の自分自身の心境や目に映っていた風景が急によみがえり、彼がしたためた「序文」が私の脳裏に浮かんだのだった。

その「若書き」の文面に学生だった私はひどく感化されてしまった。けだるく陽が注ぐ日曜日の図書館で私はこの文面に食らいつき、繰り返し繰り返し読んでいた。

その映像的記憶が、今の私に思い起こさせたものは、アルチュール・ランボーの「太陽はまだ熱かった。だが、もうほとんど地上を照らしてはいなかった。」で始まる詩であった。

ランボーのこの詩も私は少し違った時期に繰り返し読んでは、感銘を受けていた。なんら高尚なものはそこにはない。かねてから因縁を引きずっていた隣のクラスのグループと喧嘩で勝てた時の晴れがましさが、これに似ている。違うところといえば、文学や音楽は、その感動が生々しく再現できるところにある。その一方、喧嘩やスポーツで勝った時の感動は、どうも薄れてしまっている。負けた悔しさすらも、薄れがちかもしれぬ。残っているのは恨みつらみぐらいのもので、これはもはや、「耳なし芳一」を襲った亡霊のようなものだ。

そんなことを想いながら、私は部屋でレコードを聴いていた。モーツァルトの歌劇『フィガロの結婚』である。この録音はCDを通じて、何度も聴いたものだった。二十五年ぐらい前のことで、私は東京に住んでいた。秋葉原の石丸電気で買ったのだ。ここには古い音源の演奏CDやら、カルロス・クライバー（指揮者）の海賊版やらまで多く売っていて、週末のたびにこの店に足を運んだものだ。それのレコード盤を、半年ぐらい前だったか、ミシガンの自宅近所にあるThrift storeでたまたま同じ演奏（カラヤン指揮、ウィーンフィル）を見つけ、50セントぐらいで購入したわけだ。

『フィガロの結婚』は神様の視点で作られた歌劇なのではなかろうか、とつくづく思う。これをよく聞いていた二十代の頃の自分はモーツァルトの音楽にそんな神々しさなど感じなかった。二十五年の時が経ち、聞こえていなかったところが聞こえるようにもなった。さらに、別の曲目ではあるけれど、同じ作曲家によるピアノ協奏曲22番（バレンボイム・ピアノ&指揮/イギリス室内管）を最近の私は再び聞き直している。当時、絶妙さに感動していた一瞬の箇所にも、感動してしまう。初恋の瞬間が目の前で再現されたようなものだ。

文学や音楽は暇つぶしや享楽のためだけにあるのでもない、と感じる。それらは何かを見通す感覚をも育てうるのかもしれない。クラスで首をかしげざるを得ない行動をする者の行方が感覚レベルで推測できる。職場の環境、テレビ等でみた社会の状態も、トラブルの観点でいくと（これは職業上でも、自分の得意な領域なのだが）、推測はできる。歌詞やストーリーのとは違う、もっと底の部分において、言葉では説明のできない共通の法則性が音楽や文学にはあるように思える。

現在・過去・未来の一致を、この数年よく経験する。音楽を通じてだけでもない。それを思うにつけ、『神との対話』のある部分が浮かんでくる。「現在、過去、未来は同一である」らしく、そこから「祈る前にすでにその祈りは聞かれている」という言葉につなげていたのも私は思い出したのだった。

先月、内田光子のピアノコンサートが近所のコンサート・ホールで開催されると知り、初めて聴きに行った。すばらしい音楽に接すると、不思議な話だが、時間の超越を体験する。

ともあれ、自分はいろんな妄想を雑草のようにはびこらせているのだな、と私は思い、それから冒頭で取り上げたあの曹洞宗の偉いお坊さんのいう、座禅とは「息と一つになる」という言葉を思い出した。車の運転中だった。

頭のどこかでそんなものが生じた時、方向機も付けずに無理やりこちらの車線に入ってくる乗用車があった。（この辺では毎日のようにあることだが。）

その瞬間、「たたみかけ」という言葉とその観念が私の頭に浮かんだ。これは天外伺朗（SONYの技術者だった土井利忠氏のペンネーム）がその著書に繰り返し述べていた概念だった。

ところで、土井利忠氏についての記述をWikipediaから引用すると、
「東京工業大学卒業後ソニーに入社し、アンテナ、CAD、コンパクトディスクなどデジタル・オーディオ技術、ワークステーション「NEWS」、エンタテインメントロボット「AIBO」「QRIO」の開発を手がけたことで知られている。」
とある。

私が読んだのは『般若心経の科学』という題名の本だった。出版年は1997年だったと思う。ちょうど今から二十年前だ。新刊本として書店に並んでいたのをたまたま私は見つけ、立ち読みしてみた。面白そうだったので、買ってみた。その本を読んでからもう二十年になるのを思うと、時の経過の速さに驚く。私の自宅にその本はもはやない。しかし、「たたみこみ」についての説明が非常に印象が強く、その後の人生経験などをへて、ずっと頭に残り、補強されつつ現在に至っているようだ。

今から三十五年ほど前に亡くなった祖父や、二十五年ほど前に亡くなった祖母を思い出す際も、この概念を思う描くことがある。ずいぶん前に亡くなったはずの祖父や祖母がまだ近くにいる気がする。ひいお祖父さんすらも自分のそばにいる感じを時々覚える、と私は親戚に話したことがあった。
「たぶん本当にいるんだと思う。」と親戚は私に言った。
「本当にそうだったらいいよね。」と自分は言った。

小学校に入学したばかりの頃、三、四十代の自分と、七十歳を間近に控えていた自分と対話した時の情景（空想？）を思い出す。午後九時を少し過ぎたころで、部屋は暗かった。三、四十代の私は自分の幼い子供の安全や行動の問題のことをしきりに気に病んでいるようだった。七十歳直前の私は「責任」と「個人」という考えのもと、何かを私に語りかけていた。けれども、具体的に何を伝えていたのかは、七歳の自分にはまったく分からなかった。

七十歳直前の私が言っていたのが心に引っかかるようになったのは最近のことだ。それにしても、この七歳の頃の感覚は忘れないものだなぁと感心する。

人間は言い逃れをし続ける生き物だ
人間は、社会の中で生きていくに際しては、言い逃れをし続ける生き物だ。痛ましくも廃業、自殺にまでいたる事態に陥ることが多々起きていても、それでも同じことが繰り返される。ネット社会になって、隠ぺいが昔より難しくなった。ペヤングのゴキブリ事件などは、分かりやすい例だろう。この手の事例は、ネット以前の時代なら簡単に隠せて行けたはずだ。ブラック企業内で起きる自殺についても似たようなものかもしれぬ。大きな有名企業であろうとなかろうと、企業の存続を危ぶませるほどの影響が一気に出る可能性を抱えている。食品問題、自動車や付属部品の不具合問題、電信・通信問題、電力問題、原子力問題等、ニュースで流れてきたが、さらに複雑化するのではないだろうか。

システムの複雑化と問題の重大化
IT普及にともない、社会や企業内部の仕組みは複雑・細分化した。仕組みに無知な者や見識の足りぬ者がこれを管理することも生じよう。現場の作業者は自分の領域だけしか知らず、隣の席の者の行なう仕事の内容も影響度も全く知らない、ともなろう。そして、責任者が現場の仕事に無知な者であったら（どこでも起きうる話だ）、その先はどうなるか。その責任者が問題を未然に察知し、正しく対処できなければ、さらに上の責任者に報告も相談もできまい。適当に内密で丸め込み、火消しをした気になっている責任者もいるかもしれぬ。問題を問題と認識できない責任者も存在しうる。問題を問題と認識するのは、少々発達した人工知能程度にはなしえない業かと思うが、それにも及ばぬ人間が責任者を演じている場合もある。

細分化・分業化されれば、システムはほころびやすい。技術スキル以外のところ（コミュニケーション的なところ）でシステムが狂って、大小さまざまなインパクトも及びうる。日常の中でも障害は起きるが、その分析・判断・対策が適切でないと、大問題にもなろう。何か不都合なもの、大問題に繋がりかねない部分が内部で見つかったり、指摘されたとしても、隠ぺいしたい側と潔く対応したい側の攻防もある。潔さを求め指摘をしたほうが政治的に敗れ、退場する場合もあろう。

東京電力の例
学校を出るとすぐ東電学院という東京電力付属の学校に通い、電力のスペシャリストとして叩き上げられた木村敏雄氏など、技術者として問題点を上司に指摘していたものの、その言は葬られたわけだが、上司からすれば、「こいつは問題を大きくする面倒な奴だ」と、邪魔に思われるだけだったと思う。これは東京電力に限った話ではなく、今でもどこでもある話だ。ちなみに長年福島第一原発に勤めて、原子炉等の設計に従事したこの元東電技術者は、会社に不信感を抱き、福島における事故の十年前には退職したが、会社からは三年にわたって引き止められていたとのことだ。
不幸にも彼の恐れは的中し、2011年3月、福島第一の原子炉はメルトダウンし、爆発した。

木村氏：
「福島第一ってとにかくトラブルが多い。機器のトラブル。
その時に本当のことをなかなか話さない。
できれば役所とか行政にトラブルを流さないようにする。
流す時もなるべく自分達の都合のいいように。言うなれば隠蔽。」

問題は、一般的にいって、隠蔽によって以前よりも問題がさらに深刻で複雑なものになり、マグマのようにたまっていく。問題として発生した時には被害は予想より大きくなる。ハンドルできる範囲を超える事態にもなる。今日も、明日も、明後日も、来年も、こういったことは、身近なところでも起こりうる。原発に限った話ではない。

隠ぺいを続け、丸め込んだつもりになったり、うそをつき続け、逃れられないところまで追い詰められ、そこでどうしようもなく思って自殺する例は、私は子供のころからニュースで見てきたし、世の中では同じことがずっと繰り返されてきているのは悲しいことだ。自殺に至らなくとも、ダメージの大きいことに変わりはない。

先ほど言及した曹洞宗のお坊さんの、禅に関する話を引用してみたいと思う。

「妄想せんことや
　いわゆる前後裁断や
　その時その時　一息一息しかないんだ
　何か考えたらもうそれは余分や
　人間は名誉とか地位とか
　見栄とか我慢（わがまま）とか
　そんなものでいっぱいだ」

名誉、地位、見栄、わがままから離れた状態で生きていくのは、なかなか難しい。
少なくとも自分にも耳が痛い話だが、しかし、隠ぺいとか言い逃れとかは、こういうところから発生するわけだから、誰もが無縁ではいられない。

監査、報告等は、実際に対処する企業側からすれば面倒でやっかいなものだろう。しかし、こういう監視・監査の領域こそがますます重要にもなるのだと思う。監視したとて、すべてを拾い切るわけでもないから、企業や政府組織による隠ぺいや人災的事件は発生し続けるとは思うけれども。

そして、監視・監査する側の質も、問題になる。監視する者は、監視されることを必然的に要する。

そんな中、あたかも奇蹟か台風のように、水戸黄門や東山の金さん的な人や事象が発生し、日常の物語に新展開が生じ、面白くもなったりするのだろうが、それはまた別枠の話。

監視・監査が人工知能で完全に実施できる時期が来たとすれば、人間がそこで働く必要はもはやなくなる。あるいは、その種の仕事は趣味・レジャーとして行なうものとなる。そして、現在想定されていない、存在していない社会行動が、未来の仕事として発生、定着する、といったところだろうか。

賢い人工知能が導入されるにしても、経験や洞察力を持った人間の判断や創造性は必要だろう。
七十歳を目前にしていた自分自身が、七歳の私に語り掛けていたのはこんなことだったのか、と四十歳台になった今の自分が思い出してみる。が、たぶんこれで完全ではない。実際に経験しないことには、聞いた話を理解することはできない。

ところで、私をたいそう可愛がった祖父は今から三十五年ほど前に亡くなった。私は小学生であった。
葬式の場で私は弔辞を読み上げた。泣くまいと心してはいたが、堪えきれず、途中から嗚咽を上げ始めながらも、なんとか最後まで読みきった。隣で弟と妹がクスクス笑っていた。三十五年経った今でも、あの幾重にも折り曲げた和紙に綴られた文面を私は覚えている。

当時の家も近所も六年前の津波で流され跡形もないが、こういう葬式の場面は具体的な形で自分の中で動いており、この数十年来、消える気配はない。

祖父が亡くなったあとの祖母の様子も自分は覚えている。
「じいちゃんが生きていればもっと小遣いあげられたんだけど」
と繰り返し語っていた祖母の声を今も覚えている。
それを言い続け、祖父の亡くなった十二年後に、祖母も世を去った。

亡くなる少し前に私は、なぜか何の連絡もしないまま祖母のもとに会いに行っていた。そんなことはそれまでしたことがなかった。
小遣いをせびるとかではなく、ただ祖母の顔を見たいと思った。それだけだった。

祖母は私の急な訪問に驚いていた。それから、女学校時代の写真などをありったけ引っ張り出してきて、一枚一枚私に見せた。
私が急に来たものだから、何も用意するものがなかった、と言い、仕方なしにそこら辺にあった大判焼きを袋ごと私にくれた。

時間が迫って、私がそこを去ろうとしたとき、祖母は私の顔を覗き込んで、私の見栄えが上がった、としみじみ語った。私は「じゃあまた来る。」とさようならを言った。
それが祖母にこの世で会った最後だった。

年月はあっという間に過ぎる。三島由紀夫の小説に青臭い心を揺さぶられ、ださく気取っていたのは私の十代後半であった。が、その情景が四十歳を超えた自分の中で甦る中、そういえば自分の娘は、今年、その時の私と同じ年齢なのだ、と気がつく。
変なものだ、と不思議に思ったり、納得したりもする。

２０１１年の大震災をきっかけに妙にいろんな人と対話している気がしてならない。自分の生まれたころにはすでに他界していた曾祖父まで現れる。

ハーフマラソンの三週間後、私は別の村で開催された5㎞走大会に出た。舗装されていないぬかるみの道を26分ほどかけて走った。

5km走大会翌日の昼下がり、店で安物をあさりながら、四十歳代の自分は、なぜか七歳当時の自分と対話している気になっていた。

「まぁ、こういうことだ。何のことだか分からないだろうけどな。」と心の中で言った。

不思議なもので、祖父母、曾祖父、両親までも居合わせている気がした。「勢ぞろいだな」と私は思った。今日はEasterのためか、店内も駐車場も人気がなく、時間が止まったかのように静かだった。

Learning a new language is not just meant to try getting more communication channels. It is not even to get more job opportunities. I learn new languages because I want to become more self-conscious when I speak or write. I am doing so because I want make the better use of my own languages through such an experience. When you learn a new language, you may be able to make friends with different types or characters than you had ever acquainted with. It might be true, and I agree that it is a great experience. But if that was to be the only goal, then nothing would be left for us when there is a time someday when Artificial Intelligence becomes fully capable of translating languages through human voices.

Language should mean a lot more to us. Roughly speaking, in my opinion, an application of language means to clarify the thoughts, and to identify/define who you are in the society. I am feeling that the former (visualization of thoughts) and the latter (definition of self) are closely related to each other and, therefore, they always go together. When I write something, I can understand what I am thinking. I can also recognize what I don’t understand or what I am not fully convinced of in my head. By associating with people through languages, I feel I can realize where I am in that particular group or society, or how I should fit in. And it is commonly believed that, at the present time, we cannot sufficiently share our thoughts without a language.

To rephrase this, a language is a tool that allows us to think with, and it is a channel that helps define who we are as well as where we are.

When we hear about a foreign language, the first thing that come up to our head might be to think whether it be useful for us or not. We may probably start asking to ourselves, “Do I get better job opportunities if I study this language?” “Will it be beneficial to my specialty?” "Do I get new good friends?" or “Will get a chance I can date with a pretty woman?”

Regardless of whether it be practical or not, learning a new language can also help strengthen/sophisticate your first or second language. That is another advantage many people may not think so much.

The reason for saying this is because I hear (and have heard) some people knowingly saying, “You should only learn your first language. Second language will screw your first language.” This makes me stop and think. I have always thought about it ever since when I was a kid. To my young ears, it sounded as though people were disagreed to bilingual individuals including myself. Wouldn't this be an indirect way to look down on someone who speaks or studies different languages? Are they simply jealous? Why then are there English schools everywhere, and people of every educational levels mention English anytime anywhere? I don’t know how much time I spent in my life to think about it. Time flies so quickly. Multiple decades have passed since this time.

"You should only learn your first language. Second language will screw your first language." - The people saying this are likely not good at any other language. And as far as I have observed these people, none of them seems to "truly" know their first language. I might be wrong because this is only based on my own experience. The resource I have got is pretty limited. - I feel I can understand what makes these people say what they want to say. I personally think what they say is "partly" true. But not always.

For some reason, this reminds me of people saying different things like these: "There are tons of junkies or violent crimes in America, we should stay away from there, I bet you won't be safe there. Systems don't work effectively, to the point of perfect stupidity. That's a sick country, the United States." or "There are tons of perverts and chikans (gropers) anywhere in Japan especially on the trains, and people just ignore other people in trouble and the police won't be be helpful either, just stay away, you ain't gonna be safe out there. Authorities are ridiculously lame. That's a sick country, Japan."

It is also interesting to know that the same words or statements can be either right or wrong, depending on who says it. When Mr. A says "1 + 1 = 2", people believe it’s right and nobody disagrees. But the result will be opposite, if Mr. B says the same thing. And if Mr. C says it, "1 + 1 = 2", opinions are split up into two or more and then people start to argue.

To extrapolate this a bit further, here is what I think. “The language I'd believed to be my first language was not the first language actually. The "first language" is an entire set of my first and second (and even third, fourth, etc.) languages combined.” That is how I understand it when I reflect on my thought about what the first language is.

Suppose, as an innocent child, you were living happily with your parents, until one day someone comes up to you saying, “Your mom and dad will split up and go different ways from today, so can you decide which one you want to live with? You have to choose only one person.”

Unless you have any very bad memory or experience, we expect all the family members to be together. It doesn't matter how many family members in your family. If one of them is not present, the rest of the family would feel “something is missing”. There are no borders among the languages in your heart. There are no political or economic conflicts going on inside the individual's head.

People who support the idea “We only need the first language” often refer to their experience with “Kikoku-Shijo (帰国子女)”. In case you don't know who they are, Kikoku-Shijo is a group of people who spent some years outside of Japan because of their father’s business, and then returned to Japan.

This idea is likely to be molded among an “average” group of Japanese, where they find fault with one of their classmates who came back from abroad. The “differences” they noticed from such "returners" are not favorable, unacceptable, or intolerable sometimes. The Japanese kids from abroad may not and act the same way, or think the same way . It's not a question of whether it is good or bad, but Japan is, more or less, a group-oriented society. "Different tastes or feeling" from the common perception can lead to a rejection or disagreement. - None of my family here (including myself) is a Kikoku-Shijo, by the way.

Through my own observation (including on myself), I think a stupid bilingual should still be stupid the same way even if he or she was monolingual. It is likely that a bilingual (or trilingual) person may have different views because of having experienced different cultures. But that is it. This can be cool. This person may or may not get job opportunities for this attribute. It all depends on the job market situation.

I also have seen many people who were born and lived in Japan all his or her life, and they had no clue when there is a discussion over issues on manufacturing or Information Technology. There is no wonder if you are not experienced in any of these fields. Would it be fair to say this to those people? “Are you sure you are Japanese? We are speaking in Japanese right now.”

However, I feel I want to say it to those who don't know or appreciate Sokeki Natsume (夏目漱石), Ogai Mori (森鷗外), Yukio Mishima (三島由紀夫), or Jun’ichiro Tanizaki (谷崎潤一郎) and their literary works. “Hey, you are proud of being Japanese and all, but don't appreciate any of these…? You can't look down on these bilingual Kikoku-Shijo fellows, saying they are shallow-minded or they don't know about the 'real' Japanese mind or culture.”

There are people who are also proud of them while looking down on people from some other countries. But many of these people don’t know much about the Manyo’shu (万葉集), the Tale of Genji (源氏物語), Kenji Miyazawa (宮沢賢治), Takuboku Ishikawa (石川啄木), or Hideyo Noguchi (野口英世).

This makes me feel, “Without the appreciation of these things, what kind of “Japanese-ness” is there to be left they are proud of?” - What makes them proud will be the registered nationality, or self-claiming of having lived in Japan all his or her life. That has nothing to do with the “Japanese mind, culture, or tradition". But after all, this sort of contradiction or irrationality can be seen anywhere on this planet. - It is kind of interesting when I think about it.

Imagine someone who enjoys seeing the cherry blossoms, while remembering the encounters or separations from some close relationship of long time ago. This person may start thinking about how wonderful it is to see his or her children grown so big, as well as how the life used to be in his or her old days.

These things are not Japanese invention. (I have just remembered someone saying, "Four seasons are only experienced in Japan".) The cherry blossom here can be a "variable" in this context or formula. Replace this variable with another, and the formula can be applied to anywhere else in the world. As a Japanese, we will say “Ah, I am so thankful for being Japanese with all these!” when we are enjoying eating natto (納豆), white rice (ご飯), miso soup (みそ汁), or yellow pickled radish (たくあん). The same thing, however, should be observed anywhere outside the country. There are many delicious foods in Japan. But after having been through these things, and having come back to home in the U.S., I feel, "Ah, there is nothing like the food you eat at home with your family or friends here in the U.S." We are a family of multi-cultures here, we eat Japanese, Mexican, and American food.

Look at the beautiful views outside while driving here in the Midwest, you want to be thankful for being in this place.

Some people start thinking about these things when you get older. I have to admit that I am approaching my old age day by day. Following are some of the things that make me feel I got older after having passed 40 or 45 years old.

1) Start having difficulty in reading books with small characters. It frustrates me when reading a thing somehow.
2) Translating from one language to another used to be fun, and I did it quickly or without difficulty when I was younger. Now I stay away from it, unless it is the work in my workplace.

3) I was speaking English, while thinking I was speaking Japanese. I was speaking Japanese, while thinking I was speaking English. I get slightly shocked when I notice it.

4) For some reason I am studying Esperanto intensely, and fancy that it’d be so cool if this language really prevails in the world as the principle global language.

I watched this Japanese TV program the other day, called “Yarisugi Toshi-Densetsu”. I was personally intrigued by what was being discussed. It was about the A.I. technology. The person who received an interview was mentioning a Paralympic game.

During the interview, this person on the show says that, what is called, handicapped people may demonstrate higher performance than “normal” people in the future. Some of those people may be able to move an object of 200 kilograms (about 440.9lbs), while a “normal” person can only move 40 kilograms (about 88.1lbs). It’s not only about higher scores or results in Paralympic games, but it is also about our everyday environment in the future. He says a robot hand of nowadays can transcend the feel of warmth or coldness of the object the person touched. He then continues that it might be possible in near future that a person with a robot hand can brew coffee using his own hand. And it keeps upgrading like when a patch program is applied.

This story reminds me of the word “Hybrid” or “Humanoid”. Then I start thinking that, what is called, “Aliens” might be included in this category. - The "New Types" who appear in the anime "GUNDAM" might also be aliens, hybrids, or humanoids.

I also think “Globalization” or “Internet Society” which has already been taking place might be in the same category. What would my great-grandfather say if he crawls out of his tomb and start living with me and my family? He would think we are aliens.

My recent boom is studying Esperanto thru smartphone app. Esperanto is an artificial language that was invented back in the 1800’s. It was aimed to be used as a global language. I heard there was a time this language was popular, but the popularity declined somewhere between the World War I and the World War II. Now it almost seems to be unknown, just like Ainu or something.

There is one thing I have discovered while studying this unpopular language is that I feel my spoken words have improved especially in my workplace. I feel I have come to better communicate with my boss and colleagues. My grammar seems to have become better. I wonder if the phenomenon is similar to someone who improves his or her work attitude or productivity by having a family or a child. As far as the language study goes, this synergistic effect was observed in a short period of time in my case.

I like success stories of someone who sang or play the piano in a shopping mall or something, to be uploaded on YouTube, and then it was widely known to the people in the world. He might be forgotten in a year or two, but Piko-Taro might be one of them. He is known as the singer/dancer with “Pen-pineapple-apple-pen”. I don’t get the point of that song, but I like that. I am not sure why.

Cool thing about the Internet is that a great talent that had been hidden in the previous era can now get a spotlight and be known by the people all over the world. We don’t think it is special anymore now, but this communication across the borders via Internet (we are able to do that so easily at home) makes me feel teleportation technology has become available partially.

Internet can give significant influences on humans, just like what an amplifier does to an audio player. Unintelligent or narrow minded people will only seek the path to justify themselves. This adds to their ignorance and narrow-mindedness through the Internet. People who earnestly seek opportunities will find them. Those who have will have more, and those who don’t have will lose what they have. Those who ponder or pray will do that even more, and those who live on gossip will be more attached to it. This is how the social polarization takes place and the segregation may become more distinct.

One day, with the advancement of A.I. technology, we may see a system that outperforms the human brain. If the “mind” is able to get duplicated/reproduced digitally, we humans have a chance to live in a virtual environment, where we can even choose and update our appearances, just like an avatar. Full digital treatment on our “mind” may allow us to travel to (or to inhabit) some other planet.

In the virtual environment, there are murders and suicides to take place still. This should literally mean a real “death”. Cyber police or some equivalent system will monitor, control, and arrest criminals. I can imagine privacy protection would be a very serious issue. If we know we are all made up of 0's and 1's, then we truly understand what the Heart Sutra says. ("[...] form is not different from emptiness, and emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness, and emptiness itself is form. Sensation, conception, synthesis, and discrimination are also like this.") Or it is at this moment when we realize we are a bunch of shadows in a simulation lab, or a “fabulous opera” as in Arthur Rimbaud's poem.

Humans and our activities will have been completely translated digitally, after a long way in our history since we started to walk on two feet, began to use tools, words, languages, money, and utilize monetary transactions with credit cards or bit coins. And still, technology keeps advancing at any moment.

Teleportation or time-machine might be no fantasy in a few decades. What if we have the technology that completely scans what we are made of, and then fabricate it at a designated location where we wish to go? It is the time when Doraemon’s “Dokodemo Door (To-Anywhere Door)” is in place for real.

In the TV program, they say “we can acquire an eternal life” once a perfect digital technology can be applied to human brains. This made me imagine in my head like this. What if someone gets himself completely copied into the digital form and gets an eternal life? His “original” body dies and then goes to the traditional heaven or pure land, so to speak, to discover that a better technology had already been applied to our forefathers ever since the beginning of the human history. He opens his eyes so wide to say, “Wow, this is what heaven is all about!” God, Buddha, angels, bodhisattvas (or whatever you may call it) sees him to say, “Welcome! Good job on the earth. But, right here, we have better ones.”

As A.I. technology advances, a product develops itself to obtain a self or super-self, and it might have different goal or objectives than humans of today or tomorrow, just like the workers and owners have different views when working together.

Some say that advancement of A.I. to some level will make the current form of humans go extinct. It can be true. But this also reminds me of smaller scale of ending with someone or something. If you think about the fast growing technology, it is likely that humans will also experience even bigger scale of ending that what we have experienced. It might sometimes be mid-scaled and other times large-scaled.

3.11津波前の気仙沼の風景を描いてみた

For some reason, I sometimes remember Mr. Yamamura’s speech at Sophia University in July 2011. It was four months after the 3.11 tsunami hit the eastern part of Japan. I wasn’t at Tohoku where he made his speech, and I only watched it from YouTube.

Mr. Yamamura is a physician who practices medicine in Ofunato city of Iwate Prefecture, Japan. My birthplace, Kesennuma is a neighboring city from where he lives. He published the Kesenese (ケセン語) version of the New Testament of the Bible. It was translation directly from Greek to Kesenese. His house and hospital were also damaged by the tsunami on March 11, 2011. Throughout his speech was full of thoughts/insights on what he had learned from tsunami.

According to Mr. Yamamura, creatures are designed to conserve themselves, where they tend to produce similar kinds as children. But there are sometimes, what is called, a “defect” to be born, and many of them are destined to die or be unable to function in the world of norms. Now, when there is an enormous change in the outer world, the group of creatures called “defects” may be better suited to the new environment, and they start to prevail and demonstrate their power. This is how creatures have evolved themselves, says Mr. Yamamura.

If the conservative party doesn’t experience such an “unexpected” change through all time, ameba ends up being ameba. Mr. Yamamura says, “By repeating the process of evolution through huge changes, a human was created as a result. He then says that the 3.11 disaster in the Tohoku (North East region) Japan should be "His work of Creation" than a “Disaster”. After all it doesn’t matter when or how we die, but it is how we live what matters, by using the time each of us are given.

There is something for us to feel sad or disappointed about, if the A.I. technology advances and the humans of today go extinct, or they move to outer space to find new homes. From some higher perspective, it might be good news showing one form of achievement by humans. From even higher perspective, it might be neither good nor bad. It might be neither happy nor sad. In such a moment of history, the “language” might no longer be necessary because it is such an unreliable medium.

外国語を習得する目的は、コミュニケーションの領域を新たに獲得するためだけではない。職業選択の幅を広げるためだけでもない。今使っている自分自身の言語を、より意識的あるいは効果的に運用することにつなげるためでもある。新たな言語を学ぶと、新たな人々との交流も可能となる。今までと違った知人・友人ができるかもしれない。それ自体楽しくて良いことだと思う。しかし、それだけであれば、将来、人工知能による自動音声翻訳が現在のインターネットのように普及した場合、人間が外国語習得する意味はなくなるに違いない。

換言すれば、言葉とは考えるためのツールであり、自分の社会的価値を規定するための窓口のようなものか。
外国語の学習というと、実用性の有無が念頭に置かれる。「これを習得すれば、いい仕事にありつけるに違いない」「これを学べば、学問に優位だ」「この言葉を操れば、友達が増えるあるいは異性にもてるかもしれない」などなど。言語習得にはもう一つの面がある。実用性の有無にかかわらず、それは自分の第一言語や第二言語の強化や洗練のための役に立つという点。

あえてこういうのは、「母国語さえ習得できていればそれでよい。外国語は要らない」という知たりげな言葉を聞いてきたからで、そういうのを何十年と耳にし目にしては、足らぬ子供の頭で自分なりにいろいろ考えた。

「母国語さえ習得できていればそれでよい」と言いつつ、外国語が達者でない人々は多い。そういう人で本当に母国語にすぐれている人を私はいまだ知らない。

この種の説を唱えたい気持ちは分かる。背後にあるものも私は知っているつもりだ。たしかにそれは一面的には正しい。ただし一面的に正しいものでしかない。

なぜか、こういう話を聞くと、どこかで聞いた、こんな言葉を思い出す。「アメリカはジャンキーとか凶悪犯罪だらけだから近寄らないほうがいい、社会システムはちゃんと機能せず完璧にバカといったふうだし。あそこは狂ってる国だ」、「日本は変質者とチカンだらけの国だ、特に電車に乗ってみろ、一般人はそれで無視してるし、警察権力も無能で助けにならん。あそこは狂ってる国だ。」

ちなみに、同じ説を唱えるにしても、誰がそれを言うかで、意味も真実性も異なるというのは面白い。Ａさんが「１＋１＝２」と言えば、それは真実であり異論・反論の余地もないが、Ｂさんが同じことを言ったら誰の目にも誤りだと判断される。そして、Ｃさんが言えば、「賛否両論」といった具合。

「母国語さえ習得できていればそれでよい」というのも真実の一部を切り取ったものであるが、じつは、それをさらに進めていくと、
「母国語と思っていた言語と第一、第二（第三、第四…）言語を集合させたものを総称で『母国語』とされる」という見解にたどり着く。じつは自分はこれを支持したい心境。

父親とも母親ともそれなりに仲良く暮らしてきたある日、
「今日、お父さんとお母さんは別々になるから、どっちに付いていきたいか、今決めてちょうだい」
と言われた時の子供の心境にも譬えられる。

よほどの悪い事情がない限り、家族の人数は何人であろうと、全員そろっていたいと思うものだ。一人でも不在だと、「欠けている」と感じる。心の中にある自分の言語に国境はない。政治ではないのだから。

「母国語さえ習得できていればそれでよい」という説を唱える人が建前上引き合いに出すのは、「帰国子女」という括りの人々のこと。「帰国子女」とは親の仕事の理由で海外に数年滞在した子供たちのことを指す日本語。これに対応する英語はない。帰国・転入してきた彼らから受ける「違和感」がそう思わせる。日本語の使用方法や行動・仕草に違和感を感じ、それについて同意できない、受け入れられない、あるいは見るに堪えぬ、と感じるのである。バイリンガルは考え浅く、物事を深く理解できない、ともされる。

ちなみに私も私の家族も「帰国子女」に該当しないので、第三者的に語ってみる次第。

実感として感じるのは、（自分自身を見ていて分かるが、）頭の良くないバイリンガルは、たとえ一か国語しか話さないとしても頭が良くないだろうということ。しかし、複数の文化で暮らしたことで、見える世界は多少違う。要は、ジョブ・マーケット上、需要があれば仕事をやっていくし、そうでなければそういうものだと了解する。それだけのことだ。

ただ、日本でずっと暮らし日本語だけを話す人でも、たとえば製造やIT関連の話や通常の仕事の話が日本語でも通じない人がたくさんいる。「この人ほんとに日本人だべが？」と思うけれど、それはどこの領域にいるかによるだけのこと。でも、森鴎外、三島由紀夫、谷崎潤一郎をよく知らない日本人に出会うと、「あら、このお方、ほんとに日本人だべが？これで帰国子女だのバイリンガルのこと引き合いに出して、日本を知らなぃだの『浅い』だの言えねぇべっちゃぁ」と正直思うのだが。

万葉集、源氏物語、宮沢賢治、石川啄木、野口英世をよく知らない日本人に会ったこともある。それらへの理解もないのに、どんな「日本らしさ」を誇るというのだろう、と単純に思うわけだ。結局は登録上の国籍と日本だけで暮らしてきたという自己申告に頼ることとなる。それはもはや彼らが強調する「日本の心、文化、伝統」とは別の物だ。しかし、そういう矛盾や非合理性こそは、地球上のどこの世界にも共通にあって、それはそれで考えてみると、結構興味深い。

桜の花を見、出会いや別れを思ったり、子供の成長や自分の昔の姿を思い出すのは、日本だけのことではない。桜にまつわる現象を公式とすれば、桜そのものは変数みたいなものだ。桜を何か別の物に置き換えれば、全世界に対応する事象として成立する。納豆、ご飯、みそ汁、たくあんを食ってしみじみ日本人であることを痛感し安心する心地は、これらの変数の置き換えで世界各地に対応できると思う。日本にはおいしいものは多いけれど、それを経て、アメリカで食う家庭料理にまさるものはないとしみじみ思うのもまた事実。車を運転中に臨むアメリカの自然に接し、生きている喜びをつくづく実感もする。

こういった考えに至るのは年齢を経てこそ、ではあるが、それにしても自分は日々老いているのだなぁと思う。40歳を超えて体験する老いの兆候はざっとこんな感じだ。

１）目の前の活字がとかく見づらい。字を読もうとした際、困った気持ちになる。

２）十代の頃は一つの言語から別の言語への切り替えを瞬時に意識的にできて、楽しかった。なのに年を取ったら、仕事でもない限り、それがやや面倒。
３）英語を話していたつもりが実は日本語だった。日本語を話していたつもりが実は英語だった。それに気づき、軽いショックを覚える。
４）エスペラント語習得にハマり、これがもっと普及し、世の中を席巻出来たら、みたいなことを空想する。

「やりすぎ都市伝説」という日本のテレビ番組で、人工知能についての特集があった。パラリンピックの映像が流れ、義足、義眼、車椅子等の利用者についての言及がされる。

番組でインタビューを受けた人の話によると、人工知能の発達により、将来、こうした方々のほうが今で言う「健常者」よりも高い能力を発揮するようになるかもしれない、という。いわゆる「健常者」が40キロの物を持ち上げられるのに対し、補助機を利用する人々は200キロの物を持ち上げるかもしれない。そうなるとパラリンピックの方が、オリンピックよりも高い成績を出すのみならず、普段の仕事でも能力に差が生じても不思議は無い、という話。

その話は私に「ハイブリッド」という言葉を連想させた。「ヒューマノイド」という言葉も頭をかすめる。現時点、「宇宙人」と言われるものの中には、こういう人種も交じっているかもしれない。『機動戦士ガンダム』における「ニュータイプ」もその部類かも知れぬ。

しかも、じつはすでに身の前で繰り広げられている「グローバル化」とか「ネット社会」もそれに関わる現象。三世代前のひいおじいさんが墓場から出てきて、我々家族と同居することになったらどうだろう。我々などは宇宙人と映るに違いない。

先に少し触れたけれど、じつは最近、スマートフォンのアプリを通じてエスペラント語を勉強するのにハマっている。エスペラント語とは、1800年代に考案された人工言語で、国際交流言語となるのを目的としたものだが、いっときのブーム（？）を過ぎてからは、あたかも死に絶えたのかと思うぐらいに認知されないものとなった。

実用性の期待されないこの言語を勉強していて感じるのは、普段の話し言葉（特に仕事の際に発する言葉）が、他人に伝わりやすくなった、ということ。他人に伝わりやすい文法で話すことができるようにもなった。子供を持ち、面倒を見るようになってから、仕事への態度が向上するようなものだろうか。外国語学習に限っていえば、短期間でその相乗効果が実感できる。

ショッピング・モールの楽器屋で弾いたピアノ演奏や歌声がYouTubeなどを通じて一躍脚光を浴びるといった話が私は好きだ。（一、二年後には忘れられているかもしれないが）Pen-pineapple-apple-penのピコ太郎も同様。スーザン・ボイルはテレビ番組であったけれども、インターネットの効果もかなりあったに違いない。私はテレビを一切見ないのだけれど、彼女の出たあのオーディションやその後の活躍等をYouTube経由で見聞きしている。

ネット社会のすばらしさは、それ以前は埋もれたままの筈の小さな芽が、一躍脚光を浴び、評価され、復活・発展をとげる可能性を持っていること。自宅にいながらにして国境を越えたコミュニケーションが自由に行えることは、ネットの普及で無自覚になっているかもしれないけれど、じつはテレポーテーションの一端を体験したようなものだ。

インターネットは音響アンプのような効果を個人にもたらしうる。狭い見識の者はますます見識を狭め無明に陥り、可能性を追求する者はますます可能性を見出す。持っている者はさらに持たされ、持たざる者は持っている物さえも失う。考える者はさらに考える機会を得、噂話に踊らされる者はさらに踊らされる。こうしてネット社会は「格差社会」に少なからず寄与している気もする。

人工知能の発達に伴い、人間の脳の機能を超えるものもできるかもしれない。少なくとも人間の脳つまり「心」というものがデジタル的に複製・再現できれば、人間そのものが仮想環境で生きていけることにつながる。デジタル化した人間の「心」が適切に処理できれば、人類の地球外移住も可能になるといった具合。

仮想環境での殺人や自殺も発生し、それは文字通りその人の「死」を意味する。サイバー警察またはそれに相当する権力による監視・取り締まり・逮捕も活発化するに違いない。プライバシー保護は、相当深刻な要素だろうと想像するし、さらにその手のビジネスの世話にならないともいけないだろう。事件や犯罪は人類の進化とともに相当複雑化するに違いない。

とまれ、０と１で我々自身が成立すると分かった時、それはまさに般若心経の「色即是空空即是色　受想行識亦復如是」を実感する時。我々はシミュレーション用の影、ないしアルチュール・ランボーのいう「架空のオペラ」だと真に理解できる瞬間なのか。

それは人間や社会の本質が、いよいよ究極的に可視化された状態なのかもしれない。二本足で立ち始め、道具・文字・言語を使用し、貨幣・クレジットカード・ビットコインを使用・流通させ、複数言語の習得・運用をつうじて思考を体系化・可視化させていった先にあるもの。

時空移動（テレポーテーション、タイムマシーンの実用）も数十年で可能になるかもしれない。出発地点でその人の全構成をスキャンし、到着地で復元すれば、「どこでもドア」の実現を見る。デジタル・データの移動速度の上限は私には分からないけれど、工夫とKAIZENで時間移動も不可能でないのだろうな、と夢想したりもする。

番組では脳のデジタル処理が可能になれば「永遠の命を得ることも可能に」と言っている。そこで自分は空想してみた。技術的にそれが可能になったとして、誰かがいざ実行したとする。かりにあの世があったとして、そちら側に行ったらば、じつは人類の最高技術以上によくできた再生の仕組みが、人類の始まりの時期からすでに用意されていて、「なんだ、天国とか極楽ってそういうことだったのか」と分かる、というオチ。「ごくろうさまでした。人間のテクノロジーとかここでは要らないのよね」となどと言われたりして。

人工知能も、発達すれば自我とか超自我とかを芽生えさせる段階に入り、今の人類とは目指す方向性も価値観も異なる存在となりうる。従業員と経営者で視点が異なるように。

ある水準以上に達した人口知能は、今いる人類を終焉させるという説がある。そういうものかもしれない。小さな意味における既存の人類終焉（のようなもの）は、数十年生きているだけでも経験する。テクノロジーの加速度をみても、人工知能が既存人類を中規模レベル、大規模レベルで終焉させるのもありそうな話だ。

それにつけても思い起こすのは、2011年7月に上智大学で講演した山浦玄嗣氏のスピーチだ。私は会場にいたわけではない。YouTubeで閲覧したのみだ。山浦氏はケセン語訳聖書を出版された方で、本業は岩手県大船渡市で病院を開業されている。このスピーチは3.11津波から4か月後に行われたものだ。彼の自宅も医院も津波の被害を受けている。スピーチの場では、やはりあの大災害をつうじた彼の実感が終始語られている。

山浦氏の言うには、生物というものは元来、保守的にできていて、親と同じような子供を産むようになっている、とのこと。しかしたまに「できそこない」と呼ばれるものができる。それらはたいがいはすぐに死んだりするものだが、たまたま外界の環境に大変化が起こって、逆にその「できそこない」のほうが生存に適する場合もある。その「できそこない」のほうが繁栄し、そのようにして生物は進化する、というのだ。

もしも保守的な側が「想定外」の環境の変化を経験せずに生き続けるとしたら、いつまでたってもアメーバのままで終わってしまう。環境の激変をつうじ進化を数々重ね、ついに人間というものができたのだと山浦氏は語る。彼は自らも体験した3.11を「災害」というよりもむしろ「創造の御業」と解釈していることが伺える。結局、自分たちがいつどう死のうと関係なく、与えられた時間に自分がどのように生きられるかが問題なのだとおっしゃっている。

人工知能の発達が進み、今の人類が終焉しようと、新人類が地球外に移住しようと、悲しむ部分もあるかもしれない。が、さらに高いところから見ると、それは享受すべき進化の結実であるかもしれない。さらに高いところから眺めると、それは善悪とか悲喜という範疇外の現象かもしれない。しかも、その頃にもなれば、もはや「言葉」という頼りない媒体は、必要なくなっている可能性さえあるのだ。

[Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Comes to Ann Arbor] ベルリン・フィル、アナーバーに来たる

It was really like a dream. This weekend was one of the most wonderful and unforgettable ones in my life. I had never expected a big name orchestra like Berlin Philharmonic would ever come to this small town to play orchestral pieces of Mahler, Brahms, Schoenberg, etc. I hadn't noticed it until one day prior to their concert here in Ann Arbor.

I was so lucky I was able to find the website news a day before the concert and got tickets for 2 days. The prices were not as high as when you get tickets in Japan. My ticket for the first day cost $150, and the second day $75. Both of the seats were quite decent. When there are concerts from Berlin or Vienna with famous conductors, the tickets would likely be more than $400, and be sold out so soon. I couldn't afford such pricy stuff when I was in Japan. I used to go to inexpensive ones held in Tokyo, and that was it. It was 20 years ago or so.

After having purchased the tickets, I felt I was living in a dream. My heart was pounding like a junior high school boy who has just got accepted to go on a date with a dream girl.

"This is like 'The Field of Dreams' ," I thought. "Berlin Philharmonic with Simon Rattle comes to Ann Arbor." - just like "Shoeless Joe Jackson comes to Iowa."

The First day program (on Saturday 11/12) started from Boulez's "Éclat". Although I am not so much inclined to hearing, what is called, contemporary music, it was a good and fun experience, to be honest. I found out that 20th century music should be heard in a concert hall instead of CD or DVD. Listening to those musical pieces thru media is one totally different thing than experiencing it where the music is actually being played. Music breathes and pulses like an integrated creature.

Next piece was Mahler's 7th symphony. The first CD I purchased for Mahler's 7th was a performance by Simon Rattle/Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Tears welled up in my eyes when hearing the first few bars. I wished the music would not come to an end. It was around 10pm when I left the concert hall that night. There were cars on the streets. I stopped at the traffic light to cross there, and went further down to the parking lot.

While walking along the side walk of Saturday night, this famous Japanese Tanka poem popped into my head all of a sudden.

I woke up at 6 a.m. the next day in order to make it in time for the arrival at the fitness gym by 7 am, where I ran 6 miles (about 9.6 km). I am running for the 10K race next week. I ate my favorite doughnuts I bought at this cider mill. The doughnuts here are so good. These are pretty much similar to the old classical "Agepan (揚げパン)" bread. Eating these brings me back to my good old days when spending time with grandma or grandpa. These doughnuts are not very sweat, and taste simple and delicious.

The Second day program of the Berlin Philharmonic concert (at 4 pm, Sunday 11/13) started from Schoenberg's Five Pieces for Orchestra, followed by Webern's Six Pieces for Orchestra and Berg's Three Pieces for Orchestra. I hadn't had a keen interest in most of the musical pieces after Mahler's symphonies, but what I found out during this concert was: "These is something very thrilling or exciting!" The feeling I had at that time was not the one I get as I hear the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, or Bruckner.

The music was brilliant and their technique was superb. The energy and enthusiasm this orchestra radiated were overwhelming. There is one funny thing I discovered. During the interval time after those pieces were played, my ears suddenly started to catch each word or voice coming out of the audience's mouths. I felt I could saw strings of characters flowing out of these people's mouths, as if they were smoke or vapor. It might be partly because I was reading a book on coding or decoding on that day. I am not sure exactly why.

After the interval was Brahms' 2nd symphony. Like Mahler's symphonies, I don't know how many times I heard this music over and over during my lifetime. I was like a sensitive little boy who cannot even speak up a single word or anything. How I wished this music would never ever come to an end. It was amazing, time was passing so quickly. I felt as if seeing myself of 10 years ago, 20 years ago, as well as 30 years ago. I know what's coming next when hearing this music - every detail of it - but this symphony appeared as though it was just been born in front of my eyes - one after another. I was one of those witnesses there. I felt the "time" became visible and audible.

It was like meeting with deceased family members or relatives, to spend time together when the music is being played, however we had to say good bye again when the music ended. Towards the end of Brahms' symphony, I thought this magical moment was about to end. Very ending was enough to make me become emotional. I am not trained in music, and that is what makes me feel shy or inferior with so many people knowingly speaking about music or musicians.

As I had expected, it was a great time during these two days this weekend. For some reason, I suddenly remembered I had missed to see the eclipse of the sun when I was 10 years old, and had been told I wouldn't get the next chance until I'd be nearly 70 years old. I thought I had to hurry to see 70-year-old myself. Watching Simon Rattle/Berlin Philharmonic play in front of my sight today, I thought I was able to pick up 35 years after that.

This irregular form actually appealed to my eyes and ears when I first read it. (Haiku is an art that largely appeals to our ears. The rhythm greatly counts.) But I also had a funny feeling about some of his Haiku poems. Most of the Haiku he composed sounded so familiar to me. As a “mendicant friar” (I know I am not quite sure if this is the correct translation for 乞食僧), he had lived on the money received from local people while walking along the roads and streets. His, what is called, “literary works” were basically the same as private notes or diary. His diary contained thousands (or more) of Haiku poems. In the diary, he wrote about whether he could receive good enough money or the food he ate. He also wrote about the water, weather, or other natural settings. He wrote about the inns he had stayed or the people he had interacted with.

According to my old Japanese supplementary reader, Santoka was born in 1882. He had lived with parents, but his grandmother took over the custody. His mother killed herself in the well when Santoka was 10. Challenges continued. His father was running a sake brewery, but the business faced fanatical difficulties. His house was sold off when Santoka was in his 20s. He got married the following year, and then begot a son a year after that. His father disappeared when the business went bankrupt. Santoka was 34. In the same tear, his younger brother committed suicide. He started running a second-hand bookstore the same year, but couldn't bring the business on its feet. He started dealing with drawing frames instead of books, but things were just the same. Three years later, when he was 37, Santoka left home and divorced his wife.

He was a brilliant kid as a high school student. He graduated Shuyo Gakuen, now Bofu High School. It is said he started composing Haiku at around this time. Years after that, he was admitted to Waseda University in Tokyo, however had to give up his course due to mental illness.

At age 41, Santoka had been intoxicated when stopped a local train on the rail. After this incident, he was admitted to live in a Buddhist temple, where he continued composing Haiku. He attempted suicide when he was 50. He traveled across the country to create even more Haiku. Many of the writings I read are said to be written during this period. One of the source information said he had been telling his acquaintances that he wanted to die instantly without having to feel any pains. Just as he had wished, he died instantly in 1940, at age 58. It was one year before Japan declared a war on the United States of America in the Pacific Ocean.

What impresses me about Santoka is that his Haiku poems were simple, honest, and straight forward. There is no pride or vanity to be found from them (as far as I read what he wrote).

Koho Uno, a music journalist, an orchestra conductor, a chorus conductor, died at age 86. Although I think he was not so much well-known outside of Japan, it suddenly occurred to my mind that I wanted write something about his career when I heard the news of his death.

First of all, I must confess that, in my younger days, his writing style and choice of words me much influence toward me when writing essays or stories myself. He also wrote about Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished” by Carlos Kleiber and Vienna Philharmonic, in a way like this: “In the second theme of the second movement, his conducting is just like a calligraphy master, nonchalantly moving his brush to spell out the words”.

So naïve a teenage boy or a young man of early 20’s as I was, I used to go to CD stores after having read and memorized his essays on conductors and orchestras. It was the 1980s in the midst of the Bubble Economy, with so much extravagancy, vanity, and a lot of money flowing in the society. He started to work as a conductor and released a couple of CDs around this time. How excited I was when I finally found he conducted an orchestra to perform Beethoven's symphonies. Because of this much expectation on what or how he would create a work of art, his actual performances disappointed me so much. He openly disliked and criticized Herbert von Karajan or Georg Solti’s interpretation and rendition for being superfluous or lacking “deep” spirituality, but his music through the orchestra sounded much poorer, thinner, and shallower than that. But he continued his stage performance as a conductor, to sound famous symphonies of Beethoven, Bruckner, or Mozart. His tempo was ridiculously awkward, and timpani sounded so huge and cheap, as if it were firecrackers at a local festival in Taiwan or China. We started to experience the Internet activity. His peculiar writing style was often ridiculed in online forums. His typical expressions were copied and pasted out in the numerous forums. This phenomenon made me think of Mr. Uno being a respectable man in that he did what he believed was good for him to do, no matter how malicious and abusive people in public were when they criticized, despised, or ridiculed what he did. To his performance of Beethoven’s symphony, some still say, “Terrible… This is a sacrilege to Beethoven. Make apologies to him right now!” However, it should be noted that not a little influence did he make to classical music fans. Takashi Asahina was said he made it to become a maestro in Japan, thanks to Mr. Uno’s positive reviews or praises on him. Not only did he spend many words of praise and admiration toward Bruno Walter, he introduced Evgeny Mravinsky, Carl Shuricht, or Han Knapertsbush who were not so well-known in Japan at that time. Mr. Uno was the type of journalist who evaluated highly even about non-popular musicians if their performance was outstandingly excellent.

His records can be found on YouTube. It's amazing. He kept up with this own style even after he had reached 80 years old. He was a character.
After hearing his performances on YouTube, I began to realize Mr. Uno was a very serious man, who pursued having fun through music with all his strength, while remembering his favorite conductors and all, to play music like no other.

I was not quite sure why I wanted to write about him, but as I keep typing out sentences, I began thinking this way. Maybe it is because I admire his effort about his work and life, and, even though I am not a musician or a critic, there’s a lot to learn from him.

Internet is a funny thing. It allows us to do communications across borders and cultures, but it also shrinks our mind and spirit for fear of receiving backbiting or abuses from others who we cannot even see. Reading Japanese news articles, even a trivial comment on Twitter or Facebook from musicians, actors/actresses, scholars or any other famous people can cause to get him or her “burst into flames” on the Internet, which makes me think of something I had never imagined when I was just a naïve teenager more than 25 years ago.

詩人・建築家・画家としての立原道造 (1914 - 1939)

立原道造という２４歳で亡くなった詩人がおります。

青空文庫に出てくるぐらいだからずいぶん昔の方に違いないと思い、まずは手っ取り早くWikipediaで調べてみると、こういった文面から始まります。

「立原道造（たちはらみちぞう、1914年（大正3年）7月30日 - 1939年（昭和14年）3月29日）は、昭和初期に活動し24歳で急逝した詩人。また建築家としても足跡を残している。」

青空文庫（http://www.aozora.gr.jp/）というウェブサイト内で自分は何の気なしに谷崎潤一郎の作品などを眺めていたのでしたが、作家が「た」行であったためか、「谷崎」→「立原」というふうに、たまたま視線がシフトし、それで彼の詩集を読むことになった次第です。

「優しき歌」という詩集の中の、以下に抜粋した部分が自分の目に留まったのでしたが、読んでいくうちに、自分の日本語解釈が合っているかどうか確かめるためにも、簡単に英訳してみることにしました。

英訳しながら、非常に印象的な詩風だと感心しました。淡い絵画のようであり、また、はかない情景が目に浮かぶようです。先のWikipediaによると、彼は大学工学部で建築学科を出ていると共に、詩やパステル画も残しています。彼のパステル画をウェブ検索してみると、確かに彼の詩風と合致します。

また、「ヒアシンスハウス」という、彼が生前に構想した建築物があるのだそうで、彼の死から65年を経た2004年にその名も「ヒアシンスハウス」という建物がさいたま市の公園に竣工されたとのことです。

五月のミシガンは一年のうちで最もうつくしい季節ではないかとよく思います。今は午後九時ごろでも外は明るい。はかないほど見事に明るく静かに時間の過ぎゆく午後八時ごろなどは、立原道造の詩風に通ずるものがあるとさえ思うほどです。

「はかなさよ　ああ　このひとときとともにとどまれ　
　うつろふものよ　美しさとともに滅びゆけ！」
という言葉がじつに正直な気持ちの吐露だと感じますし、そこから

「小鳥も果実（このみ）も高い空で眠りに就き　
　影は長く　消えてしまふ――そして　別れる」
と締めくくるあたりは、なかなか真実味があります。

自分としては、３.１１以降も親戚等で亡くなられた方々のことを思うにつけ、また、彼らの活躍していた夏の時代に思いを寄せるにつけ、上記の立原の詩から若者臭さを感じるとともに、宿命じみたうつくしさをも感じ取るわけですが、それを素直に認めるあたり、自分も年を取ってきたということかもしれません。

さて今月、自分は一週間ほど休暇でバハマ諸島に旅行に行ってきましたが、そこでの明るく強い陽射しやうつくしい海、露店や飲食店の居並びをあるいたり、水上タクシーに乗って島々を渡ったりしていても、感動と共に、その海の色にせよ、建物の鮮やかな色彩にせよ、照りつける陽の光にせよ、もったいないような気持ちすらも湧いてきます。

バハマの首都ナッソーで土産品を買おうとした際、手っ取り早いのはStraw Marketと呼ばれるこの一帯。今回、私はチェス・セットを買いました。言い値の半額かそれ以下に値切って買うのが流儀だみたいなことを水上タクシーの船頭さんが言っておられました。確かに容易に半額に値切ることはできます。本来の値段はいくらだったか、謎といえば謎です。

削り方やサイズに不統一がみられる手作り感満点の作品ともいえる商品。

ピースは畳んだ台の中に収納し、手にもって運べます。

また、自分は今月、誕生日を迎えることができました。当日はどうしようかと考えあぐねた挙句、この数年来行ったことのなかったステーキ専門店に出向き、そこで食事するを以って記念としたのでした。

初夏の陽の光が緑色の葉っぱに降り注ぐ風景は、自分自身これまでいろんなところで何度となく見てきたはずなのに、いつの歳になっても初めて見るような感激が走るのは、自分が五月生まれだからではないか、と思ったりします。

不思議なことに、そんな初夏の風景が時折飛び火して、真夏の終戦記念日に思いが行くこともあります。しかもそれは決まって三島由紀夫のこのインタビュー音声で、こういったことを彼は言うわけです。

　『終戦の時わたくしは、終戦の詔勅を、親戚のうちで聞きました。

　　　（中略）
　そして戦争が済んだら、あるいは戦争が負けたら、

　この世界が崩壊するはずであるのに、

　まだ周りの木々が濃い夏の光を浴びている。

　ことにそれは普通の家庭の中で見たのでありますから、

　周りに家族の顔もあり、周りに普通のちゃぶ台もあり日常生活がある。

　それが実に不思議でならなかったのであります。』

立原道造のように詩的な話でもあり、ゾッとするほど真実味を伴った感覚でもある、という思いを巡らせた次第です。

I like hearing this type of news that the latest technology or tools can change some minority people's lives in a significant way. - Apple has released a video to introduce an example of how ResearchKit has helped this autistic young man change his life style.

I am not a big Apple fan or anything but the news made me think quite positively about the society. This autistic man has made a new step forward to start communicating with people by using his own "words" through this application. There are, of course, different types of autistic patients in the society, each one of whom has different levels or severity in that spectrum. This also reminds me of someone I know who had been through sore experiences from people of churches, schools, or workplaces due to his autistic attribute. It's not unusual to hear about such people or things. Regardless of whether it is a profit-seeking group of community or not, we are living in a world where people judge others, more or less, from an efficiency or productivity point of view. Reflecting what I have observed in the last decade, during this ever globalizing trend, there are people who had long been placed in higher position was made lower, and started to behave lowly to someone whom he had treated unfairly.

The sense of efficiency or productivity can be altered along with the changes made to the environment, and this one society is pretty much linked with other multiple societies, which creates the view or perspective of the world. Common sense also changes in the course of the evolvement. Take an example of the high school (tech high school) my father attended in Kesennuma, Japan. People had thought this school to be a good school back in the 1950s, however when I became a teenager in the 1980s, such tech schools were thought much less than other "normal course" high schools that were more focused on college or university entrance exams. Tech schools were filled with delinquent kids. It was quite ordinary that local people looked down on them and their schools, as if they had gone out of the right track. Now, my kid and nephew have become teenagers in 2016. Tech schools are now thought more and the locals think they are better schools than the normal schools. When people hear "tech" in front of the school names, they think it's cool. It's quite opposite of how people had thought 30 years ago. The same might be true in work environments or other social activities. Those who stick to old ideas and force such "traditions"or "common sense" might be treated unfairly one day.

The 3/11 Tsunami in 2011 made me more convinced. Someone from one of the devastated areas in Kesen of northern part of Japan held a speech at Sofia University (上智大学) in Tokyo. He said this huge disaster should be one of the work of God. By nature people want to keep the same attribute as their parents, however we sometimes get to have persons born on this planet, who might be thought "less suitable" or "not suitable". In the video, Mr. Yamaura states that when a disaster hit, those who were thought "not suitable" might become so much suitable to such exceptional situations. According to what he says out there in the YouTube video, that is how creatures have evolved in the long history of the earth. This YouTube video, by the way, makes me want to think that the utility of tools or application may even bring good news to engineers or developers, so they will be more motivated about what they do. This is another aspect of seeking profitability and productivity. Which I think is good. Advancement of technology can decrease the chance of miscommunication or misunderstanding. I thought that this is what makes our life become more meaningful and enjoyable. I also want to think that this autistic young man will start creating something that may make changes to or have great influence on other people. Efficiency, profitability, or productivity should not mean to reject or keep distance from the minorities.

On Sunday April 3, I participated in the 10K run in Ann Arbor. It was a cold morning. The temperatures were in around lower 20s. I woke up at 5:20 am, and started to prepare myself.

I ended up finishing my 10K with my best record of 53 minutes, which was more than 10 minutes shorter than the last time I ran in Plymouth five months ago, in November 2015. I am amazed by the fact that I enjoy running these days. I had never liked running a long distance at all times until a few years ago.

One of my coworkers spoke to me about this 10K run event called "Chocolate Run". He said this event was to be taking place in the downtown Plymouth MI. I had never run so long a distance as 10K. I had run quite often in the fitness gym, but it was 2 miles (3.2 km) at most. The same was true when I had run outside. For some reason I felt like extrapolating my distance record I had achieved a couple of months before. I had made it to run 5 km in the Memorial Day Run. It was not even that easy but I wanted to do more than that. To make that happen, I thought I could only keep running with my own pace. I made an online application for the 10K. Free chocolate party was to be held on that day. Full zipper jacket was guaranteed for all participants (if applied by the previous day). Those options also made me want to participate that program.

In Michigan, the weather suddenly gets colder from October. The days apparently get shorter. Daylight Saving Time was finished in early November, and then the days got even shorter right after that. Back in early summer, it was bright outside until around 9:30 pm, but now it's already dark by 6 pm. This eventually makes us miss out the chance of running outside. Temperature even gets lower to keep me from getting outside.

I started getting messages on my pc everyday to let me upgrade to Windows10. I was on Windows8, my OS version. I personally preferred being on Windows7 than Windows8. I upgraded to Windows10 just out of my curiosity. My pc started to get frozen up quite often on Windows10. Everything freezes up on the screen. I only have to stay away from there and wait a couple of minutes until it comes back of itself. PC freeze happened 5 times or so per hour. I attempted performing virus removal by taking all the knowledge I had. I found nothing bad. But the problem persisted.

I started to increase the running distance when I was in the fitness gym. I ran 3 miles first, and then increased the distance to 4 miles and 5 miles, until finally I was able to set up on 6 miles. I was getting more overtime work those days, and it was difficult to access the fitness gym everyday. Preparation had continued until the last minute.

It was 5:30 am when I woke up on the day I was to run for the event. I prepared myself in 30 minutes, and then got in my car to take off. It was pitch dark outside with no street lamps on the way. I thought "Hey, it is like I'm doing a moonlight flit." It was around 6:30 am when I arrived at the destination in Plymouth. I received a text message from my coworker. It was still dark outside. Multiple white tents were built up in the park. I saw people there, moving to and fro in that dark. My coworker and I got together around the intersection in front of the park. He said he wanted to do some warm up, running around there. He started running.

The sign-in spot was located some 10 minutes' walk from the park. I ran and came back from there with the easy pace I didn't have to sweat, hoping that'd be some good warm up. I was a little worried I might get a cramp in my lower leg if I don't get to do something because of this low temperature. I realized I was not young anymore. (I am in the mid 40s.)

It was getting brighter at the time the race was going to start. I was able to start off quite well myself. 10K was a challenge. It was a challenge to myself during the course of the way. It was kind of interesting to see many folks out there, running different ways.

Another great thing about this event is that it was taking place in Plymouth. I love the place with so many cool or cute houses there. When driving out of town on weekends, I would most likely be around here. It is so much fun for me personally to draw pictures of Plymouth. I enjoy doing it.

Back to the topic of running, I did all my best to get even faster in the last 500 meters. That was what I wanted to do. People would go ahead of me in the middle of the course. But I wanted to get the most of my strength at the last minute. I think I could do that well in the Ekiden race I had joined in the past. One of my coworkers (he has so much experience in running) had advised me to do that. Making that happen let me feel confident in myself. The team saw how good I was, and I am simply happy with that.

Every time I think about it, it is so great a thing that I can try getting the most of my strength. Physical control (involving the increase of strength and maintaining daily health condition) and mental motivation can be big part of whether you can do it well or not. It is such a blessing that I can even make such an effort. I am getting older now. I am no longer how I used to be when I was younger. I have to admit that, like it or not. But, in return, I began to appreciate what I can do under this circumstance. I can at least enjoy running.

After the race, hanging the participation medal around my neck, my fellows and I went into the tent, and started to eat the bread and chocolate to feel warmer. At around 9:30 we dismissed. Road closure was about to be ended.

Many things were mentioned out there concerning the freeze issue, and it seems there are multiple factors to make this problem happen. I wondered that, in my particular case, the issue could be resolved by simply performing disk cleanup. I thought that was it, but the issue kept happening.

I accessed the Event Viewer, and there were numerous error logs to be found.

Having cleared the user profile and then applied Windows10 patches, still the pc freeze persisted.
I reverted back to Windows8 and restored to factory settings. And then I updated to Windows10. This time there has been no freeze anymore.

My mother informed me that her sister (my aunt) had passed away. She had been through a cancer operation about 2 years after the 3.11 tsunami. I remember her saying she was working near the port when the tsunami hit. She and other people there ran up to the top of the commercial building. They stayed there, surrounded by the burning sea all the way. She said it was so burning hot, she would rather want to die right away. Men broke the vending machine there to get the drinks they could live on for another couple of days until they were rescued.

My wife and I saw her the last time in Japan in the summer of 2012. It was the time when nobody (including my aunt herself) knew she had a cancer. She rang the front door bell at my parents' place in Kesennuma. My aunt said she only wanted to say hello to my wife and me.
"Wow, it's been a long while," she said to me.
Seeing my wife, my aunt said, "Oh my goodness, my daughter's here!"
As a business owner, she was too busy on that day to stay there any longer, saying the fishermen on ship was scheduled to be arrived at the port that afternoon. She had to help the unloading business and the people on the ship.
"Take care of yourself, okay? We'll meet again, it's so nice seeing you here!"
After having said this, my aunt handed my wife, as if in secret, an envelope with some money in it, and then went back to her business.

Plymouth 市の市街地でChocolate Runという長距離走の大会があると同僚から聞き、自分は10キロメートル走の参加を決めた。実はそれまで10キロという距離は走ったことがない。フィットネスジムのランニングマシーンで走るのは2マイル（3.2キロメートル）程度である。外で走るにしても同じことであった。けれども、数か月前にMemorial Day Runで走った5キロメートルよりも走りたい気持ちにもかられた。5キロも楽ではなかったが、10キロも同じかもしれないと考えた。ペースを乱さず走ればいい。そう思って、オンライン応募をした。走った後に甘い物がタダで食える、とか、ウィンドブレーカーが記念品でもらえる、といったことも自分の背中を後押しした。

ミシガン州は10月を過ぎると駆け足で寒くなる。日も短くなる。夏時間の終わったのは11月のはじめだ。この日を境にさらに暗くなる時刻が早まる。初夏のころは9時半ごろまで明るかったのが、今では午後6時前にはもう暗い。そのため外で走る機会を逸しやすくなる。加えて、気温の低下のため外に出るのも億劫になる。

Windows10へのアップグレードを薦めるポップアップがコンピュータ画面上に毎日出るようになった。自分のOSバージョンはWindows8であった。個人的にはWindow7の方が抵抗は少なかった。そんな思いでWindows8を使っていたのだった。興味本位でアップグレードしてみた。なぜか途端にフリーズする頻度が増えた。とにかく画面が固まる。数分放置すると直る。1時間に多い時だと5回ぐらい起きた。ウイルスを疑い、自分の知っている限りの方法で対策をとってもみた。悪いものはなさそう。しかし、問題は続いている。

大会当日の朝、自分は5時半に起きた。30分で支度をし、車を走らせた。外はまだ真っ暗でもあるし、街灯もないためか、夜逃げのような気分だった。Plymouth市街地の駐車場に到着したのはかれこれ6時半ごろだった。さっそく同僚からテキストメッセージが入って来た。まだ外は暗い。公園には白いテントがいくつも立てられ、暗闇に人がうようよしていた。同僚とは公園前の交差点付近で合流した。彼は体をほぐすため周辺を走るといい、駈けて行った。

サインインをするのは歩いて10分ほど離れた場所であった。ウォーミングアップを兼ねて私は行きも帰りも、汗をかかぬ程度でかるく走った。空気の冷たさもさることながら、自分の年齢が年齢なため（もう40代半ばに突入）、この冷え込みの中、急に意気込んで走ると足をつる心配が頭をよぎった。

フィットネスジムでは走る距離を意識的に増やした。初めは3マイルに増やし、それから4マイル、5マイルと移行し、大会の数日前にようやく6マイルまで伸ばした。残業時間が特に増え、毎日のように走る時間が確保しづらかった。そのため、調整はギリギリまでかかった。

スタートする頃あいには周囲はすっかり明るんでいた。準備の甲斐あって、出だしは自分としては好調だった。10キロという距離は自分にとっては挑戦。中盤はひたすら自分で闘っていくしかない。実にいろんな人がいて、いろんな走り方をするのは興味深かった。

走りについていえば、最後の500メートルほどは、目いっぱいに走った。途中遅れていようとも、または、どれだけ人に追い抜かれようとも、ゴール近くでは出来るだけ最後の力を振り絞って走りきりたいと自分は思っている。以前出場した駅伝大会でもそれが実行できた。これは走りに練達している同僚からのアドバイスであった。それができることを知り、自信につながったし、チームのメンバーたちもそういったところを評価してくれ、素直にうれしい。

この大会のいいところは、場所がPlymouthであるという部分も大きい。特におしゃれで可愛らしい家が多い。自分に限っていえば、市外の近場でドライブする際、ここに来る確率が高い。Plymouthの風景を描くことは、自分の内面に格別の楽しさをもたらす。

最後の最後にありったけに力を振り絞れる、というのは、返す返すもうれしいことだ。当日までの体力の調整もさることながら、そもそも基礎的な体調や気力の状態もファクターになる。だから、そういう努力ができること自体がもったいなくもありがたいことだ。年を取り、自分の体力や体の状態は昔のようではない。これは嫌でも認めないといけない。ただし、それと引き換えに、自分が走れることへの有り難さを実感できるようにはなった。

走った後は、出場メダルを首からぶら下げながら、テントに入りホットチョコレートで暖まり、パンを食べた。朝の9時半ごろには同僚らと共に帰宅の途に就いた。そろそろ通行止めの解除の時間になろうとしていた。

フリーズの問題についてはいろんなことが語られ、要因は様々のようだけれども、自分の場合は単にDisk Cleanupによってフリーズの発生頻度がしばしおさまったかと一瞬思ったが、やはり問題は変わらず、であった。
Event Viewerをみるとかなりのエラーログが見られる。
ユーザ・プロファイルをクリアしたり、Windows10パッチをあてるも、フリーズは発生する。
Windows8に戻し、工場出荷状態にし、そこから再びWindows10にしたところ、フリーズはすっかりなくなった。

母親の姉（私にとっては伯母）が他界したという知らせを母親から受けた。3.11津波の2年ぐらい後に癌の手術を受けたのだった。津波発生時、伯母は港近くで働いていた。ほかの人たちと共に、商業ビルの最上階に上がった。周囲は火の海であったが、そこで過ごさざるをえなかった。焼けるほど暑くて仕方がなかったという。いっそのことすぐに死んだほうがいいと思ったそうだ。男らが自動販売機を壊して、飲み物を確保した。伯母やその他の人々は数日間、救援が来るまで、それで命をつないだのだ。

妻と私が最後に伯母にあったのは2012年の夏のことだ。まだ癌と分かっていない時であった。我々は気仙沼にいた。伯母は玄関のドアを鳴らした。ただ我々の顔を見たいがために来たという。
「あらぁ、なんと、しばらぐだごどぉ。」
と言って、それから伯母は妻を見るや、
「あらぁ、娘ぇ！」
と言った。
伯母は商売をやっていたため、忙しい。その日の午後は、船が入る予定でもあり、水揚げや船員の世話をしないといけない。長居したいんだけども、それが今日はできない、と伯母は言った。
「体に気をつけでね。まだも会うべすね。どうもね。」
そう言うと、伯母は包んだ金を、隠し事のように妻に手渡し、仕事に戻っていったのだ。

Drawing Practice: "Strangers in Plymouth MI"

Frans Bruggen was a good conductor. I only have been in his concert once, and I was sitting in the middle of the very first row of the seats. I remember hearing him breath in order to take the tempo or give cues to the players. To be honest I was not so much moved by the performance on that day. My ear was too immature to appreciate his music. I preferred thicker and more huge sound just like the symphonies of Mahler or Bruckner, to this small size orchestra comprised of period instruments.

Then why am I writing about him and his orchestra (The Orchestra of the 18th Century)? It's because of the fact that the music on that day still remains in my head even more than 15 years have passed. I can even hear the sound I heard on that day - how the air had been vibrated with the sound coming from the musical instruments. I can still feel how the floor and the walls of the concert hall was shaking during the performance. The sound I was hearing in that particular concert hall became more enjoyable and meaningful to my ears of today.

Although Bruggen died in 2014 at age 80, the music still remains in my head as if it's still being played right now. This makes me think a lot more than what's happening.

I wanted to draw this picture for fun just because I like the view of the harbor and the land across the sea over there. There is a building that looks like a fish market where there are 3 boats. Looks like Kesennuma, but it is not. I like this view anyway.

This is also only a drawing practice I drew some place that is within 40 minutes' drive from here. Not a good one. I feel I want to try one more time... I love the place around here. I never get tired of being there while seeing the houses, stores, trees, or the people in streets.

These characters brings me back to my very old days. I used to draw these things when I was 7 or 8 years old. I was always doing this at both school and home. I remember I had been a boy who didn't speak a word with people, but when I turned a 3rd grader I suddenly began talking a lot.

On the way back home from our drive a few weeks ago, we saw a coyote in the field that ran towards where we were driving and crossed right in front of us. I don't want any of these fellows to attack on my cat. My cat is an indoor cat but it's kind of scary when I think about my cat getting outside by accident.

日曜日の朝、気がつくと猫が私に乗っかってくる。朝以外に猫が私の上に乗ったりすることはない。これはうちの猫の日課である。

猫は時計の読み方を知らない。しかし、猫は体内に時計を持っていて、それに基づき行動しているフシがある。

先週金曜日、私は職場の駅伝大会に参加した。個人の記録的には、去年よりも30秒ほどタイムを縮めることができた。それが何よりも私にはうれしかった。天気がとても良く、暖かくて、観衆の数も多かった。

スタート30分前に、準備運動として、１．４マイル(２．２Ｋｍ)ほどメンバーの仲間と一緒に走った。これで体がほぐれたように思う。また、この一年、週に二、三回は、職場地下のフィットネスジムで走る等を心がけてきた。

０．７マイル（１．１Ｋｍ）の距離を走るのに4分30秒というのは、一般的に大した成績でないかもしれぬ。しかし、40歳台も半ばに入り、1年間で自己タイムを30秒縮めたことで、これからも頑張ろうと自分に言い聞かせられてうれしい。

ここでの駅伝は、8人で1チームの競技であるが、同じ部署のメンバーらとタスキを渡して走るという競技は、やってみると、チームワークの美しさや楽しさが分かる。成績は39チーム中、9位であったが、決して悪くはない。（他の同僚らが走りが得意で、それに私の遅さをカバーしてもらった。）

土曜日は、ユークリッド(Euclid)の著した幾何学の古典『エレメント』を私は読んでいた。それを読むのに疲れると私はTECHNICAL COLLEGE SERIES NATIONAL CERTIFICATE 'MATHEMATICS'のページをめくった。

理由が自分にははっきり分からないが、数学の問題をやるとアルチュール・ランボー(Arthur Rimbaud)の詩集が読みたくなる。特に、彼の後期の作品集『イルミナシオン』は、数式のような、そうじゃないような不思議な思いに囚われる。(それにつけても、"Illuminations"という字づら、その響きが脳裏にうつす投影のなんという鮮やかさ！）

日本で仕事をしていた頃をふと思い出す。CATIA (3D CADソフト)のMold Tooling Designのワークベンチで作業していた時だったが、ピンやプレートがあって、そこにはルールがいくつもあった。そうした各コンポーネントの関係性を見るにつけ、やはりなぜだか分からないけれど、私はバッハの音楽を何度となく連想したのだった。

詩や音楽を連想しながら仕事をするのは、良い兆候だと、私の直感は教える。
それは辛い日常を紛らすべく音楽に逃避する、というのとは真逆の現象である。

群馬県に所在する客先には週に二、三日の頻度で訪問した。
CATIAを使って仕事した最初である。あの時は1から手取り足取り当時リーダーをされていた方から教わった。毎日自分が何かを学び取っていて、成長しているのが、はっきり体で分かった。帰りの電車内で、自分は静かに感動していた。

この時における連日の感動こそが、その後に別の場所で経験した辛さとかパワハラとかを何とか乗り越えられ、さらに躍進できた要因の一つであったのだと今になって私は思う。

群馬県でのホテル滞在、チームでの食事、銭湯で汗を流す等を通じて、仕事を頑張った。

焦ったりイライラしたり、真冬なのに緊張して汗流したり、ノートPCを毎日バックパックで担いで肩凝ったり、世間話したり、そうやって仕事をしていたわけだ。仕事を通じた青春と呼べるものがあるとすれば、この時だったと私は思う。私は当時すでに三十代半ばを過ぎており、日本の常識では「青春」とは言えないのかもしれないけれど。

あれから7年ぐらいが経った。

時間の経過と、回想する現時点の自分とを直截に繋ぐこの「何か」を意識した時、ふと考える。
少なくとも過去とを行き来するタイムマシーンは、脳内における記憶の操作で可能だったりして、とか夢想したり。

ところで、この日曜日の夕方は、いつものように日曜の夕方らしかった。

私にとっての日曜の夕方は、サリーン市街地に向かうミシガン通りの光景である。
交通量のまばらさと、傾いた西日と、閑散としたような99セント店の駐車場と。

シャルル・デュトワ指揮、モントリオール交響楽団によるベルリオーズ『幻想交響曲』をたまたまYouTubeで聴いた。1楽章のはじめの数分を聴き、オーケストラの響きだけで、今までに感じたことのない感動で心が震えた。この曲で涙を流しそうになるほどの感覚に陥ったことはそれまでなかった。楽器から発する音それ自体が美しいのみならず、それが心の琴線に触れ、エモーショナルにさせるというのは、録音の魔術であるのか、演奏の魔術なのか、作曲者の魔力であるのか。

Reflection Along with the Music, Movies, and Novels

Came back home nearly 10pm today. Ate dinner and then played with my cat. The first page on the Internet browser made me feel refreshed.

“Outrage” directed by Takeshi Kitano was very impressive among the movies I watched for the last couple of months. Miura’s acting intriguing most among the other actors. That is politics, the things taking place from the beginning till the end.

These guys are all bad and realistic (if not real)

I am listening to Sibelius’ symphony number 3 as I am writing this post. What a pleasure this music is to my ears. His pieces are not so much dramatic like Beethoven’s or Mahler’s music. Compared to Sibelius, even Bruckner’s symphonies sound much expressive and aggressive.

It's no longer the summer sky up there

Among the seven symphonies composed by Sibelius, I love the 3^rd, 4^th, and 6^th most. I start thinking I feel so close to this composer because I was also born in the cold, norther area. His music makes me get more closed and introvert in the cold winter season. Spring comes, and there is the sound of water steams from a river. It is such an enjoyment when I feel I can see the grass grow under the chilly sky, surrounded by the mountains. This eventually makes me think that Michigan is the perfect place for me to work and live.

I was reading a short novel, “The Restaurant of Many Orders” written by Kenji Miyazawa. I don’t know how many times my parents took me and my sister to the Kenji Museum in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. It was always a fun place every time I visited there. I had not been a passionate fan of his, but when I turned forty or so, I suddenly started to like whet he wrote. “The Restaurant of Many Orders” is even read in a Japanese elementary school class. Two gentlemen from town are walking around in the woods. They are nicely dressed and civilized. In this rural area, they are now lost the way when they come across this strange restaurant. "Plump parties and young parties especially welcome." People living on the IT (including myself) should be like these fellows. Be aware so we won’t be cooked and get frightened unexpectedly.

This coming Friday I will be running for the Ekiden (駅伝), a relay running race. Thirty-nine teams are registered. I will be running 0.7 mile. I hadn’t run at all for decades until I started to work here. But I now enjoy jogging 2 or 3 times a week. What a difference.

When one tries to be more effective or capable than others, or to stick to the rules regulations (in a wrong way), we may likely get caught by this type of trap. We people of the IT era in the 21^st century might also be sharing this risk every day. The popular motto we hear such as ”Customer First”, “Safety First”, or “Family Oriented” can bring us to the opposite side without knowing it. Just like the two sides of a coin. For some reason, this idea kind of reminds me of the Heart Sutra (般若心経), saying that form is emptiness, while emptiness is form. Form does not differ from emptiness, while emptiness does not differ from form.

Sometimes I feel the time and space are one perception concentrated into a single dimension, or transcends the dimension of time and space, especially when I hear the music composed by Toru Takemitsu (武満徹, 1930 - 1996).

I love this composer... His music brings back to my old memories... I remember having the same impression 20 some years ago when I was a student... I feel his music transcending the time and space every time I think about it... I am no musical expert or anything but his music (not only this particular piece) appeals to me somewhere very deep inside... something that I have had since when I was 5 years old or something... "A String Around Autumn", for example, always reminds me of the time and moment when my grandmother (who died 25 years ago) took me out for a walk to a riverside one Sunday evening... The sight that I had perceived thru the 5-year-old's eyes still remains even if this little boy is now over 40 years old...

This kind of music can be called a "beauty", if beauty is something that touches our heart and makes us amazed over the decades. For instance, it is something that connects the 5-year-old and 20-year-old with the 40-some-year-old human individual, to share the emotions they possess across the time.

[Reflections: Four+ Years After the 3/11 Tsunami] 3.11津波から4年余りが経ってから振り返ること

I spoke with my mom in Japan over the telephone last weekend. She lives in Kesennuma, one of the most severely damaged areas by the tsunami on 3/11/2011. She said that about 80% of all vehicles on the roads are sand carrying trucks or construction vehicles. More than 4 years have passed since the disaster, but what she said to me that time was that there are reconstruction jobs still going on, trying to make the ground higher. She then said that by the time this city would be restored she would already be dead and wouldn't be able to see the completion. Things are progressing so slow, she said. School playgrounds are still full of temporary housing. It has been said that public apartments would be built, but, according to what my relative said, there is no such things built yet. This eventually means that school kids cannot play soccer or baseball in the ground. Just hearing of it made me feel sad. The house I grew up in was washed away. All are gone. I couldn’t even see the roads or anything around there when I visited there in 2012. Two relatives were found dead in their home soon after the tsunami. One died a year after that. One has been missing. His body had not been found but a funeral was conducted for him some months after that. My aunt was working near the fish market that was facing the bay. At the time of tsunami, she climbed up on the top of the building with other colleagues. They climbed even more using the ladder. There was a small space added to the top floor. She said she didn’t want to climb because it was very scary. She said she would rather die, saying it was her fate. The sea in front of them was on fire all over. Oil had already leaked out into the sea to make the entire surface around them look like the sea of fire. My aunt was forced to climb up. She later said to me that it was so hot because of the blazing fire on the sea. She said that heat made her feel very scared while enduring it. Men broke vending machines to take out juice to share for the next couple of days. My parents were in this city, too. Normally, my mother was to go to the bank near the sea, but for some reason she didn’t go there. My father was working in his workplace that was on the high land. My other relatives evacuated to higher places, and they ended up being safe. List of the dead was broadcasted on TV, and there was my sister’s name. But a couple days later it turned out that it was somebody else. Phones were out of connection for some days, until only one company cellphone from “au” became available to communicate during that system confusion. I was able to speak with an employee in the Hokkaido office of my father’s company. She explained to me that my father contacted them and asked them to carry necessary items to Kensennuma using their trucks. My father took the warmth using a power generator. That was not a common item in Japan. One grocery store owner in Akita Prefecture asked the employees of my father to go to their store by truck to take anything they needed in the store. U.S. military arrived and gave them helping hands. Many people from many places in the world visited there to help the locals in Kesennuma. My shirts and pants were donated to the evacuation camp in the nearby junior high school. The house my parents lived (and still lives) was safe.

On the phone of last weekend, I heard my aunt, whom I described earlier here, is suffering from the pain of cancer. It has spread various places in her body now, and I heard she could not sleep because of the pain. I could only pray for her, so the pain would be eased. I do hope she would not have to suffer so much. I did jogging that evening, and was always thinking about her. Jogging has been a good method of meditation for me. In 50 years, almost all the people I know (parents, brothers, sisters, coworkers, bosses, librarians, store clerks, restaurant waiters, bloggers, YouTubers, police officers, etc.) should already be dead, and they don’t even care how I was like. Rumors and misunderstanding are all gone. Comes to think of it, like my mom has been saying these days, we should just enjoy the life, do what we want to do, and get along with who we feel are pleasant to be with. Don’t get upset or angry more than we should. – I then start remembering the 3 statues on the desk of a social worker at a welfare facility. My wife and I saw that about 10 years ago when we went there to apply for the welfare support. We were in financial difficulty. Our daughter was about to graduate from kindergarten. Many things happened even after that. We had moved to Japan. I had been working in warehouses, factories, or construction sites, until I got a chance of working with CATIA. I started to learn about IT and many other things. I had so many experiences during those years. That is thanks to the leader who took care of me when we worked in the same project. We built a method of plastic mold designing process in CATIA. We went to the customer site in Gunma Prefecture 2 or 3 times a week. We stayed in the same hotel, had dinner together, and rode the same train on the way back home. He said to me, “Don’t think everybody is kind. There are mean jerks everywhere. You should be grateful people working with us in this project are all nice and kind. This is the perfect condition you can learn things while working with CATIA.” It was true. I realized that I was getting much better each day. After that project was over, I moved to other location to work as a CATIA supporter. I learned so many good things through work, although I had to be troubled by a mean fellow, who locked me up in a small room for 2 hours to give me harsh words. I knew I could be better than him if I keep enduring that situation for 2 years or so, while I encountered many good people to build connections. - My patience was rewarded now.

From the Book of Ecclesiastes:

"To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven:

At the Sotochu temple in Kesennuma, the priests recited Shushogi for us while we were seated. That scripture is still kept here in my house in Michigan. I wanted to read those verses further. I was copying the sutra on paper and this is my favorite part.

"Impermanence is unreliable; we know not on what roadside grasses the dew of our transient life will fall. Our bodies are not our own; our lives shift with the passing days and cannot be stopped for even an instant. Once rosy-cheeked youth has gone, we cannot find even its traces. Careful reflection shows that most things, once gone by, will never be encountered again. In the face of impermanence, there is no help from kings, statesmen, relatives, servants, spouses, children, or wealth. We must enter the realm of death alone, accompanied only by our good and bad karma. Avoid associating with deluded people in this world who are ignorant of the truth of causality and karmic retribution, who are heedless of past, present and future, and cannot distinguish good from evil. The principle of causality is obvious and impersonal; for inevitably those who do evil fall, and those who do good rise. If there were no causality, the buddhas would not have appeared in this world, nor would Bodhidharma have come from the west."

I have recently been thinking about this aunt in a hospital bed, while thinking of my parents, old friends, relatives, and my grandparents who have already been dead for decades.

I love the views and natural settings here in Michigan. I also like the work environment so much. This great condition is something I had never had before. I love weekend driving. Jogging around my house is such a pleasure to me. I love the morning and afternoon skies. The beauty of the evening sky of summer is beyond description. Bruckner’s symphonies or Beethoven’s 6^th touches my heart in different ways as how it had sounded like.

I thought of “Kitchen” written by Banana Yoshimoto. The happy feelings under the transient condition life are depicted throughout the story.

My mother said to me: "We don’t want to just put things back as how they were. The people of the next generation have to rebuild different things or styles, so they with live differently. That’s what evolution is all about. It’s no use repeating the same way as how we have lived. It is going to be just choking them if they have to stick to the old ways. That is why we old people are to die, and younger generations can go on living."

Memorial Day Run 2015

Participated the 5K run for the Memorial Day Run in Novi, MI, on 5/25

走ることが私の日常の一部分になったのは最近のことである。私は長い距離を走るのが元来嫌いであった。小学校の長距離走大会が私に悪い印象を植え付けた。爾来、半マイル以上を走ることをしないまま成人し、中年になったのである。

今の職場の今の部署に働き始め、私は部署対抗の駅伝大会に出ることを勧められた。去年の秋のことだった。私は断り続けたが、私の同僚の一人はどうしても参加させたがっている。彼は地元ミシガンの大会のみならず、ボストンマラソンやロサンゼルスマラソンにも参加する、大の走り好きである。

正直走りに少しの興味はあった。健康の向上意識もあった。ただチームの順位を著しく下げることには不安があった。自分の部署は参加辞退をした。その後、別の部署で飛び入り参加を激しく募集していた。歩きに近い走りでも何でもいい、というのであった。同僚もその部署チームに入るという。私も参加することにした。

毎日昼休み、同僚は私を特訓してくれた。会社の敷地内を1マイルかそれ以上、一緒に走った。息が切れるし、早くなど走れぬ。「走りきることが重要です」と彼は言った。「走りきる」という言葉の意味は、へとへとでゴールインするのではなく、最も力を出した状態でゴールラインを抜けることを謂うのである。

練習は昼にとどまらない。夕方も練習した。その甲斐あって、恥ずかしくないタイムを記録した。「走り抜ける」こともできた。仕事以外でのチームワークを発揮する楽しさが分かった点で有意義であった。３８チーム（部署）が参加したうち、我々の順位は18位ぐらいだったと思う。

以来、私は会社のフィットネス・ジムにもよく通うようになった。暖かい季節になれば外を走る。

会社の駅伝大会から数か月がたった。寒い冬が終わって、緑の生うる初夏が来た。メモリアルデー記念の大会がNovi市で開催されることを同僚が私に知らせた。これは一般の催しものであるから会社は関係ない。私はプライベートでこっそり参加申し込みをし、大会当日は早起きし、Ann ArborからNoviに車を飛ばしたのである。

会場で私は準備運動をし、軽いウォームアップを始めた。そこへ大きな声で私に声掛けする者がいた。私の同僚であった。しばしの会話をした。彼は最初のプログラム１０Kを走るべく、さっそくスタート地点に向かった。

私は５K（5 Km）に参加したのである。全体で１４２位。年齢別（４０－４５歳）で９位という結果であった。結果はさておき、非常に楽しいイベントであった。同じ会社の人たち数人と会った。走る人のとても多い職場だと思った。別部署または別地位の方々と仕事等の会話だと盛り上がりにくいが、運動の話題ができるということで良いことだと思う。

幽霊に関する証言について、周囲の反応はこのようであった。

ある者はヴォン・ウォアトの妄想にすぎないと言い、またある者は彼のことをしっかりした人間であると反論した。論理を基に仕事をする技術者であり、また地元のメソジスト教会の信者でもある彼が狂言を吐くとは考えにくい、というのである。

名だたる学者が複数あつまり、彼の頭の検査を行なったそうだ。
「気難しい傾向の性格を持つ」ということが分かったに過ぎなかった。
実在しないとされるものが見える人間には、そもそも気難しい人が多いものだ、という説明が付された形であった。

ヴァン・ウォアトの幽霊体験は世間の知られるところとなった。
地元ディクスボロの住民は、土葬されているマーサの遺体を検査すべきとの意思を表明。
果たして、検査は行われ、結果はこうであった。
「死因は薬物による中毒。何者かによって投与されたのではないかと考えられる」。

マーサの幽霊らしき人物がヴォン・ウォアトに語ったとされるフレイン湖およびメイン‐ミル通りの井戸も調査対象になったようであるが、異常は発見されなかった。

幽霊が複数回に渡って言及したジェームスに関してであるが、疑わしいとする決定的な証拠はなかった。

ただし、周囲の噂など、彼はこの土地にいづらくなったと文献には書いてある。

マーサにバルサムポプラを処方した薬の行商人は白い目で見られるようになった。（マーサの幽霊によれば医者がその薬を出したとされるが、文献を見るとどうやら薬品の売人が処方したらしいことが示唆されている。）

まもなくジェームスと薬品の売人は姿を消し、二度とこの土地に戻ることはなかった。
ジェームスの妻もそれと一緒に姿をくらませたかどうか、そこまで詳しいことは不明である。
ちなみに、ジェームスの所有地は、1852年に売りに出された。

マーサの息子ジョセフは21歳になって、母親マーサの家を相続した。
1850年の統計調査によれば、彼は1,000ドル相当の資産を保有する農家として記録されている。

後年におよんでも、近隣の住民たちはマーサの幽霊についていろいろ語った。
死んだ後にわざわざマーサが姿を現したのは、よほどジェームスと薬物売人を消散させてしまいたいと思ったに違いない、と噂されもした。
なにしろ、マーサの言い分では、彼が自分にひどい仕打ちをし、死に至らしめさえしたのである。

21世紀の現在ならこういった幽霊話を本気で信じることはないかもしれぬ。
ただ、19世紀の半ばであれば少々事情が異なる。
きっと住民たちは、聞いた話をかなり真に受けたことだろう、と私は想像する。

マーサの幽霊に関する話は、イプシランティ・センティネル誌（1846年1月14日号）およびアナーバーのトゥルー・デモクラット誌（1846年2月12日号）で取り上げられ、何年も語り継がれた。

ディクスボロがこれほど有名になったのは、後にも先にもこれのみである、と文献には書いてある。

さらに1849年になると、アイオワ州カウンシル・ブラッフの新聞社が発行したフロンティア・ガーディアンの創刊号で、マーサの幽霊が出現した話が語られる。

以後、ハロウィンの時期にもなると、アナーバー、イプシランティ、ウィットモア・レイク、デトロイトの新聞は、マーサの話が詳しく述べられることになったようだ。

マーサの住んでいた家は、不審火により1860年代から1870年代頃に消失したとされる。
少なくとも1858年にシュアート一家がディクスボロに引っ越してきた際には、まだ残っていた。
フリーマン・シュアート・シニアが、報道記者に向かって、マーサの家を指差し、ここがそうだと説明した事実があったとのことだ。

さて、あるブリキの行商人が、ディクスボロのメイン‐ミル通りの交差点近くの宿屋で夜を明かしたとのことである。彼が翌朝にはいなくなってしまったという出来事があった。
もっとも、所有物である馬は、昨夜からつないだままになっており、荷馬車の中身も荒らされた形跡はないのである。

噂では、このブリキの行商人は殺され、井戸に捨てられたのではないか、とされていた。
マーサが姉のアンから聞かされた恐ろしい秘密と何か関係があるのだろうか。

結局、遺体は見つからなかったものの、結局メイン‐ミル通り近くのその井戸は埋められ、別の新しい井戸が掘られた。

そこから約100年後の1960年代のことであるが、エメット・ギブという住民が報道記者に地元で語り継がれる幽霊伝説について語った。彼はチェリー・ヒル通り沿いに住んでおり、当時宿屋のあった場所は道路向かいであった。

彼が言うには、静かな寒い夜には今でも、行商のベルの鳴る音が聞こえてくるとのことだ。よくよく耳をすませば、聞こえるのだそうだ。

幽霊との対面（1回目）
9月27日土曜日でした。7時から8時の間にあったことですが、私は家の窓の前に立っていました。妻は近所のハモンド夫人のお宅に出かけており、息子二人は自宅の中庭におりました。私は家の前を通って表の庭を歩いておりましたが、窓を鏡にして髪の毛を整えていた際、光が窓に映るのを認めました。

私は窓に手を当てて、よく見ようとしましたら、キャンドルスティックを持った女性がいました。持っていた手は左手です。先には火が点っていました。女性は普通の体型をして、簡易なガウンを着、頭には白い布が巻いてありました。やや前かがみの態勢で、目は大きく、しかし沈んだ目つきでした。顔の血色は良くなく、唇からは歯が覗かれました。

女性は室内を歩き、寝室に入っていきました。自分も家に入って、寝室のドアを開けましたが、中は真っ暗でした。マッチでロウソクに火を灯しましたが、見渡してみても、もう何もありませんでした。何も聞こえすらしません。ただ、最初に私が寝室のドアを開けた際、部屋の中のタンスの引き出しが開いて、それから閉まるような音は聞こえました。

数日後、自分がこの目で見たものについて人に話をして、そこではじめて自分のいたそこの家にはマルホランド未亡人（マーサ）という人が住んでいて、亡くなったのだと知らされました。

二度目に同じ女性の姿を見たのは、10月で、夜中の1時頃でした。私は起き上がり、裏の戸から出ることにしました。寝室のドアを開けると、外の部屋が明るいのを見ました。ロウソクは見えませんでしたが、同じ女性が立っているのが見えました。彼女は5フィートほど離れたところに立っていましたが、こう言うのです。『私に触らないで。どうか触らないで』。

私は少し後ずさりし、『ここに何のご用ですか』と尋ねました。すると彼女はこう言いました。『あの人が持っていったのよ。あの人が私から少しずつ奪っていって、最後に私を殺した！殺したのよ！あの人はもう全部持っていった！』私は彼女に尋ねました。『誰が持っていったんですか』。すると彼女は『ジェームス、ジェームス。そう、ジェームスが持っていた。でも、このままでは済まされないわよ。ジョセフ！ああ、ジョセフ！ジョセフには手を出さないで』。そしてすべて暗くなり、静かになりました。

三度目にこの女性を見たのは同じ10月。夜中に目が覚めた時です。時刻については覚えておりません。寝室がまったく明るかったです。ロウソクは見えず、女性がそこに立っているのみです。『ジェームスには、もう私に手出しさせない。絶対させるもんですか！私は彼の手に届かないところにいるんだから。ジョセフを放して！私の息子に手を出さないで！なんであの子を放してくれないの？』。そしてすべて暗くなり、静かになりました。

四度目に彼女を見たのも10月です。夜11時ごろで、私は暖炉の前に座っておりました。家族は寝入っており、私は物を食べておりました。その時、急に玄関のドアが開きました。戸口にはあの女性が立っており、私の知人である男性に支えられていました。彼女は体をのけぞらせ、今にも死にそうなほど苦しんでいる様子でした。女性は何も語りませんでしたが、そばで支える男性が口を開き、こう言いました。『彼女はもう死にそうなんです。もう死ぬと思います』。そして玄関のドアは、静かに閉じていきました。

幽霊との対面（5回目）
五度目に彼女を見たのも、また10月です。夜が明けて少したったころです。家を出て仕事に行く時でした。表の庭にあの女性が立っていました。そしてこう言いました。『ジョセフには書類をちゃんと持っていてほしい。でも、でもそうじゃ・・・。ここで彼女は口をつぐみました。それから彼女はこう言いました。『ジョセフ！ジョセフ！私の息子に何か起きるんじゃないか、それが怖い！』

幽霊との対面（6回目）
六度目も10月です。夜中でした。寝室の中で立っていました。前見た時のように部屋は明るくなっていましたが、しかしロウソクは見えませんでした。私は寝ている妻の方を見ました。目を覚まされたら大変だと思いました。女性は手を上げ、言いました。『彼女は起きないわ』。女性は大変な苦痛を感じているようでした。彼女は前かがみになりながら、片手でおなかを押さえ、もう片手で薬ビンを持っていました。私は『それ何ですか』と尋ねましたら、女性は、『バルサムポプラって医者は言ってたわ』と答え、それから消えていきました。

幽霊との対面（7回目）
七度目も10月です。部屋の中に小さいベンチを置いて、それの作業ををしておりました。夕方の時間帯はこのベンチの作業となっておりました。女性が姿を現し、私にこう言いました。『ジェームスに物を言ってやりたかった。でも、結局できなかった。結局言えなかった。』私は彼女に聞きました。『何が言いたかったんですか』。女性は言いました。『あの人にとんでもないことをされた』。私は『誰のことですか』と言いましたら、彼女が言います。『あの人が、私をこんなに苦しめた』。そして女性はこう何度も言いました。『あの人たちに私は殺された。』

私は彼女に近づいて行きましたが、彼女は離れ、あくまで同じ距離を保ったままでした。『何か飲まされでもして殺されたんですか』と私は彼女に聞きましたが、口に溜まった泡のせいか、彼女の滑舌は悪く、よく聞き取れませんでした。

女性は奥の戸から外に出ていこうとしました。自分が知っている二人の男性が立っていました。うつむき、落胆したような風情でした。鉛が溶けるみたいに、二人とも姿が徐々に無くなっていきました。2インチほどのサイズの青い炎が溶けたあとの物に燃え移り、泡立てていきました。女性の姿はもう見えませんでした。それからすべて暗くなりました。

幽霊との対面（8回目）
その次に女性を見たのは、裏庭にいた時です。午後5時ごろでした。彼女は私にこう言いました。『あなたからジェームスに「心から反省しろ」と伝えてもらいたい。心から反省したらいいんだけれど。そんなことはしないでしょうけど。反省なんかするような人間じゃない。ジョンは悪人』。こう言って、彼女は何かボソボソ言ったのでしたが、私には何を言っている分かりませんでした。

それから彼女は『フレイン湖はどこにあるかご存じ？』と私に尋ねました。次にある重要な話をし、こう言いました。『このことは誰にも言わないで』。
（ヴァン・ウォワートがのちに明かしたところによると、この重要な話には、かつて、メイン通りとミル通りの角（マーサが生前住んでいた家の近く）に備えてあった井戸のことが触れられていたという。）

私は女性に、『あなたを殺したというその二人の男性の名前を公開してもいいですか』と尋ねました。すると彼女はこう言いました。『時は来ます。その時は来ますから。でも、もう終わり！もう終わり！悪だくみは終わり！』

そして彼女は息子ジョセフのことをゴモゴモと言い始め、それからすべて暗くなってしまいました。

幽霊との対面（9回目）
最後に彼女を見たのは、11月6日でした。時間帯は深夜で、私は寝室にいました。女性は白い衣服で身をまとっていました。まっすぐ立って、顔色は悪いのが分かりました。『誰もここにいてほしくないのよ。誰にもここにいてほしくない』。そして彼女は聞き取れない言葉を発し続けていました。時々ジョセフという言葉は端々に聞こえはしました。
最後に彼女は、こう言いました。『私は自分の秘密を言いたかったの。私の秘密はもう伝えたはず』。そして、すべてが暗くなりました。
（ヴォン・ウォワート一家は、この翌日、家を引き払った。）

記録によれば、この女性の言葉には、アイルランド訛りがあったという。また、同じことを繰り返して言う癖もあったということだ。「あの人たちに殺された」ということと、息子ジョセフの名前は頻繁に出てきたという。

ディクスボロという地域は現在ミシガン州アナーバー市に包括されている。ミシガン大学の学生で賑わうアナーバーの市街地からプリマス通りに沿って、郊外に車を20分ほども走らせれば、ここディクスボロにたどり着く。

この出来事の始まりは、1835年にさかのぼるから、かれこれ180年前のことである。

日本の年表でいけば、時期は江戸時代。慶應義塾創始者の福沢諭吉が生まれた年である。

大塩平八郎の乱はこの2年後、さらにその3年後にはアヘン戦争が勃発することとなる。

日清戦争はこの約60年後の1894年に起き、第一次世界大戦の開始は約80年後の1914年である。

日本やその他の状況を簡単に言及したうえで、本題に入ろうと思う。ジェームス・マルホランドとジョン・マルホランドは兄弟だった。彼らはアイルランドからここディクスボロに移住してきた。記録によれば、ふたりとも働き者で、暮らし向きも悪くなかったようだ。兄ジェームスにはすでにアンという妻がいたが、弟のジョンはまだ独身だった。

1835年の夏のこと、アンの妹マーサが息子のジョセフを連れてカナダからディクスボロに滞在していた。マーサは当時未亡人で、いくらかの財産を持つ身であった。ディクスボロ滞在中、ジョンはマーサに魅了された。一定の交際を経て、ジョンはマーサに求婚する。マーサもジョンに夢中であった。ジョンを魅力的な若い男性だと感じていた、と文献にはある。

姉のアンは二人のことを知るとひどく取り乱し、結婚を思いとどまるよう妹を説得する。アンはこの頃、思い沈み、悩むところがあったとされている。ジョンとジェームスに関する恐ろしい秘密を知ってしまい、アンはそれに恐怖と不安を持っていたらしい。アンはその秘密を妹に伝え、ジョンとの結婚は思いとどまるよう説得した。

その恐るべき秘密が何であるかは、いまもって不明である。

ともあれ、姉に秘密を聞かされて、マーサは驚き恐怖する。ただちに婚約を破棄し、カナダに帰る支度を始めた。ジョンとジョセフは、マーサを引き留めようとした。しかし、マーサのカナダ帰郷の決心が変わらないと知るや、今度は脅しをかけ始めた。もしもジョンと結婚しないならば、生きてカナダに帰れないようにしてやる、とマーサに伝えたとのことだ。

かくして同年（1835年）、ジョンとマーサは結婚する。二人は現在のチェリー・ヒル通り(当時はヒル・ロードと呼ばれていた)に居を構えた。

ところで、現在この通りにはHumane Societyという動物保護施設がある。今年2015年に17歳になる私の娘が二年前から毎週末ここでボランティア活動をしている。我が家の愛ネコ「モモ」はここで引き取ったのである。

当時すでにあったディクスボロ商店（ディクスボロ・ジェネラルストア）は、開店したとされる19世紀当時の面影を残しつつ、今もなお雑貨を扱う商売をやっている。（ただし下の写真は1915年。）

娘の送り迎えのついでに時々我々はこの店に立ち寄るのだけれど、歩けばどこも床がギシギシとなる。周囲も古き良きアメリカの風情が多分に残った、のどかな地域である。教会の建物など、100年前の写真も残っており、歴史ある美しい地域である。

ここで話は1835年に戻る。新婚のマーサの姉アンがこの世を去った。夫であったジェームスは1938年に別の女性と再婚。その2年後の1940年にはマーサの夫であるジョン（ジェームスの弟）が世を去る。

ジョンとマーサの間に生まれた、当時まだ幼かった息子（おそらく二人いた子供のうち下の方）もジョンの死後すぐに息を引き取る。マーサは夫と幼い息子に先立たれたのちも、チェリー・ヒルの家に住み続けたとのことだ。

それから1年もたたないうちに、マーサは自分自身の体に変調を感じ始める。姉のアンが死に至ったのと同じ症状であった。それもあってか精神的にはひどい鬱状態であった。悪夢にも悩まされ、正常な日常生活が困難であったと伝えられている。自分の名前も書けないほど心に混乱と動騒があったのだそうだ。

マーサの夫ジョンの死後、彼の所有物は兄ジェームスの物となり、マーサはそれに手も触れられない状態になった、と当時の近隣の住民たちは噂した。不自然な死が続いたとして、周囲はジェームスのことを疑い始める。この頃マーサは腹部や胸部に痛みを訴えていた。その治療に関与していたのは、地元にいる薬の行商人であったが、疑惑の主ジェームスの友人でもあった。

1845年になってようやくマーサはアナーバーに住む医師から診察を受けることとなる。ミシガン大学で基礎及び臨床医学を専門としていたサミュエル・デントンという人物であった。マーサはジョセフとジョン兄弟が人には決して語らなかった恐ろしい秘密をこの医師に告げたとされる。彼女はヒステリックに「『あの人たち』が私を殺そうとしている！」と叫びすらした、と記録にはある。実際マーサはそれから間もなく死んだ。死亡するの前の晩、彼女は近所の知人宅で精神錯乱に陥った。義理の親せきが、そこに出向きマーサを引き取り、自宅まで連れ帰ったとのことだ。

マーサが死んだのは体調の悪化と精神錯乱によるものだというのが、近隣住民の表向きの認識であった。その裏で、どす黒い嫌がらせをしていたジェームスは許せない、という感情もくすぶっていた。

同年(1845年)9月24日、アイザック・ヴォン・ウォアトという大工がニューヨークのリビングストン郡からアナーバーに行く道すがらにあったのであるが、ここディクスボロで足止めを食らう。彼は妻と二人の幼い子供を共に引き連れていた。

1859年2月16日付のアナーバー・ジャーナル紙によれば、ディクスボロ付近にまで来たあたりで彼らの馬車が壊れ、ヴォン・ウォアト一家は2年ほどここで滞在するを余儀なくされたとある。

馬車が壊れたとて、何もしないでいるわけにはいかない。建築中で放置されたままの家を見つけるや、ヴォン・ウォアトは自分から志願して、作業を完成させる仕事を自分にやらせてほしいと申し出る。なんとかその仕事にありつくことができた。

同時に、自分と家族の住み処を探す必要もあった。その際、地元に住む15歳のジョセフ少年の元に案内されたが、このジョセフは、数週間前に死んだマーサの長男（おそらくマーサには息子が二人いて、カナダで死別した最初の夫との間に生まれた息子）である。15歳のジョセフは母親と住んでいた家を彼らに貸すこととし、ヴォン・ウォアトと正式に契約を交わした。

ジョセフの母親マーサのことについて何一つ知らないヴォン・ウォアトであるが、眼前で何度となく幽霊の姿に遭遇するのは、一家がこの家に引っ越して三日後の夜のことであった。

1845年12月8日、ヴォン・ウォアトがアナーバーの法務官に対して行なった公式の証言が残っている。

Playing with my translation system

I was playing with my translation system for hours at home. On Saturday I made changes to my personal translation database. And on Sunday (which means today) I just ran the system and start modifications. It is a great fun. I love writing my own journals and translate it into the other language. This makes feel I can use it in my actual work activity, when I have to translate technical documents from Japanese to English or vice versa. A translation systems itself means almost nothing, just like a computer itself is only a box to which a user will have to add particular rules, commands, or environment. - The system I am using is PC Transer from Cross Language. This company is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and I remember visting the office several times in around 2010. There are no English interfaces, but I like using it. It is a fun toy to play with. I am also hoping to use other translation systems to compare the differences.

For the past several years, I have been daydreaming of how I can improve the translation process for business documents. However there is not much progress. I want to excuse myself by saying I was too busy to get to work on that. Out in the real world, I have heard of some companies that are researching and developing self-driving cars, and I had a chance to see one the other day. That was very interesting.

Thinking of self-driving cars reminds me of this short story, “Non-Human Police”, which I purchased when I lived in Japan. This story is included in the paperback book, titled “The Crowded Future”. The book is almost like a classic which was published in 1972. A police officer of near future (it turns out to be a robot) appears in the story like this.

‘At the street corner, I found a police officer standing there, and he was apparently leaning against the tree on the roadside. He is a robot, of course. Not only he is equipped with a small electronic brain, but he has the functions of such as a speed meter, alcohol detection, and brainwave test. This police robot is capable of discovering traffic violations of drivers but nothing else, because there are almost no pedestrians out there. Speed meter is used to find out the speed violation, and alcohol detection the intoxicated drivers. The robot is also capable of detecting the brainwave not to allow a driver to have an epileptic stroke while driving. Anyone emitting abnormal brainwave will be taken to a hospital before any stroke will take place.’

In 1993, when this short story was to be adopted to a Japanese-class high school textbook, the Japan Epilepsy Association accused of this description because it would generate a discrimination toward epileptic patients. I still remember seeing a couple of people from the organization accusing in front of mics on TV. I was a student back then. Discussion seems to have carried out between the two parties but they split up. The author declared he would stop writing anything publicly, and now this story is unavailable as a new book (as far as I can see in the Japanese Amazon website).

Advancement of the information technology and systems is so great. Issues that had been covered up can be now easily uncovered. Back in the days, even if you found a cockroach in your food (instant noodle cup, for example), the store or vendor used to hide it skillfully. But now we are in the Internet age. Consumers will put photos on his Twitter page and they will be viewed by the public right away. The photos can instantly be duplicated or retweeted to all over the places in the world across the Internet.

As the system becomes highly developed and is categorized into many smaller fields, grasping the whole situation will become more difficult, meaning it is a great challenge to make changes, manage, or fix the system. Any system cannot go without troubles, however it is often not easy to quickly grasp the conditions and take countermeasures to the issue. In the SF novels I read as a kid, the story would end up in a situation where humans will be controlled by robots or systems. I think it was an anime produced by Osamu Tezuka, but I vividly remember there was one scene where robots once used by humans learn to use the humans to force them to do the line work in the factory. That was a brilliant image to my eyes, although I watched it just one time a few decades ago.

Advancement of computer systems will require more communication skills between individuals than ever before. Without effective communications between individuals or groups, issues can be overlooked, causing even bigger problems. I have an impression that problems have become to look more serious and difficult to handle once they occurred, and the affected area can be larger. Think of the nuclear power plants in Fukushima. It is no longer an issue that will be resolved or handled by individual’s technical skills or effort. Modernization has allowed individuals to have more privacy. Eventually the bondage of humans has become weaker, and it apparently shows that the lack of communication will be one big factor that causes more massive and disastrous issues. It is not a question of how smart or how much capable the person is as an element or component, but it is how the person can cooperate with others and make it work across the entire network. I guess that is what makes the 21st century look different from the 20st century, i.e. highly automated systems and highly communicative individuals across the huge and complicated virtual systems.

数年来、自分は翻訳の効率化について夢想しながら本来の仕事をやって暮らしてきたわけだけれど、翻訳に関するかぎりあまり変化はない。忙しさにかまけて翻訳という部分を深く考えることもないまま数年が過ぎた。そのうちに自動運転という話題が聞かれたりもするし、すでに複数の会社で研究・開発が進んでいるのだそうだ。目で見るだけなら自動運転の車を見る機会はあったのだったが、とても興味深かった。

自動運転を思う時、私の心に浮かぶのは、筒井康隆の『無人警察』という短編小説で、日本に暮らしていた頃、角川文庫から発行されていたのだった。単行本名は『にぎやかな未来』というもので、発行年は1972年となっている。近未来の設定における警察が描かれている。しかもそれはロボット警察で、作品では以下のように描かれている。

「四つ辻まで来て、わたしはふと、町かどの街路樹にもたれるようにして立っている交通巡査に目をとめた。もちろん、ロボットである。小型の電子頭脳のほかに、速度検査機、アルコール摂取量探知機、脳波測定機なども内蔵している。歩行者がほとんどないから、この巡査ロボットは、車の交通違反を発見する機能だけをそなえてる。速度検査機は速度違反、アルコール摂取量探知機は飲酒運転を取り締まるための装置だ。また、テンカンを起こすおそれのある者が運転していると危険だから、脳波測定機で運転者の脳波を検査する。異常波を出している者は、発作を起こす前に病院へ収容されるのである」

1993年、この作品が高校の国語教科書に採用されることとなった際、日本てんかん協会がこの表現を糾弾した。TVで会見している協会関係者を学生だった私は見た記憶がある。作家は自主的に断筆し、今ではこの作品は姿を消したとのことだ。（日本にいないので確かめようがないが、少なくとも日本のAmazonで確認する限りでは新刊書として存在していない。）

情報やシステムは発達し、今まで問題化しなかったものが簡単に問題化したり、飛び火もする。食べ物(たとえばカップ麺)にゴキブリが入っていれば、店や企業昔もうまく隠して、それが世には出ないで済んだ。しかし今やTwitterなどに写真を上げてしまえば、すぐに世の中の目に入り、一気に拡散もする。

それと別に、システムは高度に進み、細分化したため、全体を把握し、管理・変更・修復することも難しくなった。システムにはトラブルが付き物ではあるけれど、しかし問題の把握や対処は容易でない。子供時代に読んだSF小説だと、必ずロボットやシステムに人間が逆に支配される、という結末で締めくくられる。ロボットが今度は人間を取り押さえ、ライン作業をさせる、という場面を私は覚えている。手塚治虫のアニメだったか。何十年も昔のことだが、子供ながらにインパクトがあった。

コンピュータ・システムが複雑化するということは、人間どうしのコミュニケーションが今以上に必要になることと並行していると思う。人間どうし、グループ間のコミュニケーションがうまく機能しないために問題が見落とされ、さらに大きな問題に発展する可能性が付きまとう。問題は大規模化、深刻化し、対処も難しくなった印象を受ける。福島の原子力発電の問題など、個人レベルの技術力で食い止められる問題ではないはず。文明の発展により個人の自由は得られたが、人間どうしの関係が希薄になった。今度はそれによるコミュニケーションの欠如こそが大問題や大災害の一大要因になった。部品としての個人の出来の良さはそれほど意味をなさない。むしろ、人と人とのつながりをどう生かすかで初めて人間は意味をなす。そのことが強調されるのが、20世紀と21世紀の違いになるのかもしれない。― つまりは、高度な自動化の実現と、広範囲で複雑な仮想システム全体での高度なコミュニケーション能力の発揮が象徴的になるのかと思う。

My family and I love eating natto. This eating habit has never been changed even when we were in Nevada or Japan, or anywhere else on this planet even when we are here in Michigan. We bought this brand, which we hadn't heard of, for the first time. The package is written in the Korean language, except for the three letters that says "日本産 (Produced in Japan)". I quickly thought this should most likely have to be expressed as "国産" instead of "日本産." - But anyway, we wanted to try this new brand. It was even cheaper than we had purchased.

To those of you who don't know what natto is, Wikipedia explains about it this way:

"Natto (なっとう or 納豆) is a traditional Japanese food made from soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. natto. Some eat it as a breakfast food. Natto may be an acquired taste because of its powerful smell, strong flavor, and slimy texture."

As the article explains, natto has been one of the most popular breakfast food items and is considered to be a very nutritious food.

Looking into the Wikipedia description one more time, it says, "[...] serving of natto (100g) provides 29% of the Daily value (DV) of Vitamin K, 22% of the DV for Vitamin C, 76% of the DV for manganese, 22% of the DV for iron, and 22% of the DV for dietary fiber."

Just like sushi, people have believed that natto was something that is produced ONLY by the Japanese. But thinking that most of the Japanese restaurants are run by non-Japanese where sushi is served, natto can come out in place from non-Japanese companies or factories. I know many Japanese want to say "That's no better than a fake. I don't trust that. Our food can be appreciated and tasted only when it is made in Japan."

If this is true, it has to be that the performances in the Japanese Disney Resort will be all fakes, and they should not be trusted. All the Disney characters are speaking and singing in Japanese, and all are happening in Japan.

Going back to the topic of this natto that was probably produced in a non-Japanese company (the package says it is produced in Japan, but I doubt it), my family and I thought it was as delicious as other Japanese brands we have eaten for so many years. Good news is that it is less expensive than the famous Japanese items.

It doesn't mean cheaper things can be better. Once there is a quality issue to be known publicly on the media, people will stay away from the item regardless of whether it is cheap or not.

We sometimes go to the nearest Chinese buffet restaurant because we love the sushi over there at a reasonable price. Great thing about this restaurant is that we can also eat many other things, including various Chinese food, apple pie, cherry pie, cake, and fruits. We go to Japanese grocery stores when we want to buy or eat something that other Asian stores do not have, such as beef bowls, Japanese seasoning items and so on.

The two (2) triangles (ABC, DEF) shall be equal in every respect, if the following conditions are satisfied.
(1) The triangles have 2 sides (BA, AC) of one equal respectively to 2 sides (ED, DF) of the other.
(2) The triangles have the angles (A, D) included by these sides equal.

PROOF

Consider the triangle ABC to be applied to the triangle DEF, where the point A shall coincide with the point D, and the line AB with the line DE, and that the point C shall be on the same side of DE as the point F.
[II]
Since the line AB is equal to the line DE, the point B shall coincide with the point E.
[III]
Since the angle BAC is equal to the angle EDF, the line AC shall coincide with the line DF.
Since the line AC is equal to the line DF (hyp.), the point C shall coincide with the point F.
Since [II] has been proved, the 2 points of the line BC and the 2 points of EF must coincide.
Since two (2) right lines cannot enclose a space, the line BC must coincide with the line EF.
Hence, the triangles agree in every respect.
Therefore, BC=EF, ∠B=∠E, ∠C=∠F, and △ ABC=△DEF.

shallに関する英語の感覚：
日本語の語感では、「等しいものとする」「等しくなければならない」みたいな感じ。（上ではそれを考えたうえで、あえて「XXはOOと等しい」というふうに和訳。）

図面の指示でもshallは非常によく使われていて、たとえば「最大許容抜き勾配は３°のこと」は、MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE DRAFT SHALL BE 3°のように表現。

英語の感覚：
「2つの三角形があって…一方の三角形の2辺(BA, AC)が、もう一方で対応している三角形の2辺(ED, DF)とそれぞれ一致している…。」というイメージがはっきりあれば、大きく間違う心配は無し。

英語の感覚：
「三角形がこれらの辺に含まれた等しい角度を持っている。」みたいな風にしてしまうと、まるでワケが分からない。

技術系の翻訳だと、訳す側の頭の中に、最低限、下記のようなイメージがないとまずい。(今回の課題文は、技術とかではなく、幾何学の基礎に関する文面ではあるけれど…。)
"2つの三角形があって・・・それぞれ角Aと角Dがある・・・。で、その角Aと角Dは(1)で言及した2辺の間の角である・・・。”

このイメージを頭の中に浮かべたうえで、オリジナル言語(ここでは英語)の文章の語順、語彙、優先度を読み取りつつ、ターゲット言語(ここでは日本語)に翻訳。

英語の感覚：
線ABは線DEと等しいので、点Bは点Eと一致しないといけない。（一致することとなる。）
CATIAのスケッチやアセンブリではよく使う拘束オプションないしコマンド名でCoincidenceというものがあって、これは日本語版だと、「一致」拘束とか「一致」コマンドとか言うので、『一致』とした次第。

英語の感覚：
2つの線が空間を含みえない（面積・体積・厚みを持たない「線」の特性ゆえに、そこには空間が存在しえない）

cannotはここでは、「~しえない」のニュアンス。

enclose a spaceについては、「線はそもそも空間（面積・体積・厚み等)を持つものではない」という幾何学の定義・認識が訳者側にあれば、訳を間違う心配は無し。

BC must coincide with [...]のmustは、point B shall coincide with [...]のshallと微妙に区別。
「(これまでの理屈上、以上のことから)~となるはずである」みたいな感じを頭の中に描きつつ、訳す。本課題文におけるのshallは日本語のニュアンスだと、「~となるべきである。~でないといけない。」に近い。

Hence, the triangles agree in every respect.
英語の感覚：
「あらゆる点において(注：形状的な『点』のことではない)、2つの三角形は等しい。」

ともあれ、詩のようなきれいな言葉に訳すよりも何よりも、読んで正確に情報が伝達され、作業者に間違いのない仕事をしてもらう。そんな翻訳が良い技術翻訳なのだと思います。実業務をしてきている者としての実感としては、そう感じます。

日本語から英語への翻訳においては（自分が翻訳する場合は本課題と逆で、日英翻訳がほとんどなのですが）、日本語がそのまま機械的に英語（?）に置き換えられていたり、日本語のルールで英訳されるためか、英語として成立していない文章、ないしは情報として誤っている文章に遭遇することも、普通にありがちなこと。（そうした場合、英訳のほうは見ず、元の日本語を読んで作業する、といったことも必要になるかと思います。幸い日本語が読めるので、エンジニアとして自分が作業する場合に限っていえば、とりあえずそれで問題はない。あるいは、時間が許せば、自分で英訳しなおすことも。)

要は、作業するエンジニア等が翻訳された文書を読み、誤認識に至らないような翻訳をすればよい、ということになります。または、意味不明な翻訳なため、実作業者が文章の読み飛ばしをしたり、勝手に推測・判断をしないようにする、ということになります。そこが技術翻訳の面白さであり、難しさでもあるかと思います。（実務経験している領域であれば自分が何を説明しているか、実務者レベルで把握・確認できるけれども、そうでなければ難易度は上がる。）

また、さらに面白いと思うのは、原文がかならずしも親切に書かれていない場合も結構ある、ということ。日本語で書かれた文面の場合、説明する際、英語の表現とどこか異なったり、または、文章が省略されたような（抜け落ちたような）印象も受けるので、そういった行間も汲み取り、日本語を読んだ時と同じだけの情報を翻訳対象言語に書き換える、というものも必須かと思います。その際は、できるだけ余計な言葉を付け足すようなことは避けるようにし（オリジナルにない用語や説明が入ったりするのは、個人的にはあまり良いとは思わない）、また不足もないように工夫する、というのも面白さであり難しさであると思います。

言語を問わず、オリジナルの方に記述の間違いや抜け落ちがあったりもするので、翻訳者がそこに気づいて、記述する側に伝え、擦り合わせができるようであれば、品質の向上・維持につながると思います。

技術翻訳の唯一にして最終的なゴールは、「オリジナル言語を読んだ時に得られるのと同じ情報を翻訳対象言語においても得られるようにする」いうものか、と実務者レベルとしては感じています。

国境と時差を超えた作業によって、品質（クオリティ）が思わぬ時に思わぬ形で損ねられるないように、といつでも気をつけながら、自分自身、頑張って仕事をしている次第です。
