Why Mayweather vs. Amir Khan will happen on May 3rd

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has beaten Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert Guerrero in his last two fights, and both of which were one-sided affairs that were largely boring to watch for fans. These guys were highly rated, yet the fights still ended up with Floyd Mayweather easily winning them. That’s where the argument for Khan comes in. Win or lose, Amir always comes to fight, he’s very exciting and has a massive hard throwing variety of combinations. He also possesses a suspect chin, so basically anything can happen.

At least we can see Floyd Mayweather knocking out an opponent or Mayweather on the back foot taking punishment for a few round against Khan before he turns it around and tops him.

There is also talk of Maidana fighting Floy. This fight is more of a farce than any. Marcos Maidana has just beaten in my eyes a light welterweight in Adrien Broner from last month. When Maidana faced Khan in 2010, he got dropped and out-boxed until the tenth round when he was able to hurt Khan with a jarring right hand. Do you really think Foly Mayweather will get hit and hurt like Khan did in the 10th? Maidana also has also loss to Devon Alexander at 147 from last year in February. Alexander was just beaten by Shawn Porter and lost his IBF welterweight title in the process. Porter has a draw and a victory over Khan’s last opponent Julio Diaz.

Fighters like Tim Bradley and Pacquiao deserve the fight against Mayweather more than Khan, BUT FORGET THEM; Mayweather will never fight a Bob Arum fighter. He’s made that clear recently. So we have to look at Golden Boy fighters like Amir Khan or Maidana.

Shawn Porter is still largely an unknown fighter, who will need more high profile fights before he’s ready to fight someone like Floy Mayweather. Paulie Malignaggi isn’t ideal for Mayweather either A rematch between Victor Ortiz and Mayweather is out of the question. Please.

I think the majority of the fight fans would agree with me that if we could choose we would pit Floy Mayweather with Ruslan Provodnikov. I had Provodnikov beating Tim Bradley last year.

Boxing is a business as well and Amir Khan arguably brings more viewers than the rest of the guys that Mayweather can fight, like Marcos Maidana or Danny Garcia for his next bout on May 3rd. Just like Carl Froch and Ricky Hatton had the country of England behind them in their fights against opposition from the United States. Amir Khan has a lot of fans in the UK that will be backing him.

Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) is saying that he’s already signed the contract to fight superstar Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) on May 3rd, and he’s just waiting for Mayweather to sign his part of the contract. Khan is reportedly frustrated that Mayweather hasn’t already signed because he wants to get ready for the Las Vegas based fight.
The fact that Mayweather hasn’t signed the contract yet suggests that he may be having second thoughts about fighting Amir Khan now that Marcos Maidana has emerged as an appealing option for Mayweather’s next fight following his victory over the fighter that emulated Floyd Mayweather, Adrien Broner.

“I am the one who signed the contract, I’ve signed my part of the contract, they’ve not signed theirs,” Amir Khan said to the Dailymail. “If he wants to fight Khan then he should sign it. If he wants to face someone I’ve beaten [Marcos Maidana] then so be it. He wants to fight someone who makes him look good but styles make fights.”
A lot of boxing fans will feel disappointed and let down if Floyd fights Khan because it’s a fight that would be considered a straight up mismatch due to Khan’s recent struggles in the ring with him going 2-2 in his last four fights. That’s not the type of opponent that Mayweather typically fights. He would be taking a step backwards if he were to fight Amir Khan at this point with him still not having redeemed himself following his losses to Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia in the past. Khan did himself no favors by not fighting those guys again because enough time has gone by to where he would very well have faced each one of them.

Mayweather vs. Maidana is a fight that would likely interest a lot of fans in the U.S, as well as other parts of the World. Maidana has captured a lot of boxing fans with his win over Broner, and Mayweather would be able to take advantage of Marcos Maidana’s new surge of popularity.

Fight of the Year 2013: Bradley-Provodnikov

The Fight of the Year for 2013 came down to two rousing 12-round boxer-slugger confrontations for the fans who voted in RingTV’s year-end awards poll.

Marcos Maidana’s hard-fought but clear-cut unanimous decision over Broner, garnered 32.9 percent of 1,300 votes, but was outdone by Tim Bradley’s narrow unanimous decision over Ruslan Provodnikov, which took in a little more than half (51.1 percent) of the votes.

Both fights featured undefeated American boxers defending their world welterweight titles against rugged, hard-punching foreign-born challengers. And both fights exceeded the expectations of the boxing media and most fans as the heavily favored Americans found themselves at the wrong end of fearsome early round onslaughts from their underdog challengers.

With the victory, Timothy Bradley proved that he belongs among the sport’s elite. Meanwhile, Provodnikov Ruslan proved that he belongs on the world-class stage. Together, they combined to give boxing its Fight of the Year.

Espinoza: Manny Pacquiao vs. Floy Mayweather fight not likely to happen until Pacquiao changes promotional companies

For a big mega fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. to happen, Manny Pacquiao may need to change promoter, says Showtime President of Sports Stephen Espinoza. Under the current situation, Espinoza doesn’t see the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight taking place with Pacquiao being promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank. If Pacquiao wants the fight with Floyd, or have the chance for the fight to take place, he’s going to need to not automatically re-sign with Arum when his contract is up with Top Rank in 2014.

Asking Manny Pacquiao to not re-sign with Top Rank might be expecting too much from the Filipino, because he’s been loyal to Bob Arum and Top Rank all these years, and it’s hard to see him turning his back on them just because he could arguably make a ton of money against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Saul Alvarez, Amir Khan, Broner and Danny Garcia.

“Floyd will fight Manny Pacquiao anytime, anywhere,” Espinoza said to the Telegraph. “Unfortunately, there is a promotional conflicts which are the issue. I’d like to be optimistic but there is a lot of politics involved. A lot of history to resolve. Unfortunately, until Manny Pacquiao changes his promotional representation, I’m not optimistic that it can happen.”

You did notice how Espinoza said “until Manny Pacquiao changes his promotional representation,” didn’t you? Espinoza is assuming that Pacquiao will want to change promoters when his contract with Top Rank expires next year. I really don’t think Manny Pacquiao will change promoters. He had the chance already, and he keeps re-signing with them. Why would Pacquiao decide to move on now after all this time? I don’t think he will. I think Pacquiao will stay with Bob Arum until the bitter end, fighting the likes of Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado, Ruslan Provodnikov and Tim Bradley for the remainder of this career. I’m not sure how many times he can fight each one of these Top Rank guys before the public totally loses interests in watching his fights, but I think we’re going to find out.

If you read the boxing forums, many of Pacquiao’s fans like the fact that he’s staying with Bob Arum. They see this as loyalty and they admire him for it. I’m not sure if it’s the smart thing or not, but Manny Pacquiao does seem to be loyal. He did let Alex Ariza go recently on the advice of trainer Freddie Roach, but that was a rare instance for Pacquiao where he made a change in his team. It would be a lot harder for him to walk away from Bob Arum than Alex Ariza, because with Arum, Pacquiao would need to speak with him one on one, and I’m not sure that he would say no to the 82-year-old promoter if he asked him nicely to please re-sign for another 2-3 years with Top Rank.

Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza says that Amir Khan is one of the main names that Mayweather. is looking at for his next fight on May 3rd. The other name is Maidana. Espinoza says that Floy Mayweather also has some other fighters that he’s looking at for that date, but he’s not saying who these guys are.

It would be a big shock if Floy chose to fight someone other than Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana, because there’s not much to choose from at 147 right now in terms of big names. There’s Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook and Devon Alexander. But it’s difficult to picture Floy choosing one of those guys to fight next

“Amir Khan is definitely one of the leading contenders for the fight,” Espinoza said to the Telegraph. “I know Khan wants the fight. It’s definitely a topic of conversation. Maywether hasn’t made a decision. I expect an announcement by mid-January or end of January. At this point, it’s still wide open. Floyd has not made a decision yet about who he is going to fight… Maidana has made a late case and a strong arguement for the fight.”

Espinoza is making an understatement when he says that Amir Khan wants the fight. Amir is living and breathing the Floy fight, and it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall to see Khan’s reaction if Marcos Maidana gets the fight instead of him. Khan beat Maidana three years ago by a 12 round unanimous decision, and so you can imagine how Khan would feel if a guy he beat gets the fight against Floyr instead of him. But Mayweather probably is going to select his next opponent on the best fighter is at 147, because if he were to do that then he would select someone like Keith Thurman.

Floy Mayweather will likely be making his selection on which guy will bring the most pay-per-view buys for his fight. I’m not sure if Khan is the guy to make that happen. If this fight were staged in the UK without any U.S PPV money, then Khan would be the best guy for the fight. But Floy needs someone that can attract fans to purchase the fight in the U.S., and Marcos Maidana might be the better option for that purpose because Amir Khan is virtually unknown to the casual boxing fans in the U.S.

Gennady Golovkin has never seen video of Osumanu Adama fight

WBA middleweight champion Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) is getting ready to fight an opponent he has never seen fight before in 33-year-old fringe contender Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) on February 1st in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Golovkin says he’s never seen him fight on video, and it doesn’t look like he’s even interested in seeing any of Adama’s past fight. You can’t really blame Golovkin though, because Osumanu Adama is a guy that his promoters at K2 has selected for him to keep busy in early 2014 while he waits for more interesting fights to possibly open up for him.

After the Adama fight,Gennady Golovkin could be facing Kirkland in April. That’s a match-up comparable to Golovkin’s recent annihilation of Curtis Stevens. James Kirkland is plenty tough, but no match for a fighter like Golvkin skill-wise.

When asked by Hustleboss if he is familiar with Adama or if he’s ever seen video of his past fights, Gennady Golovkin said “No I don’t know. I never see.”

Osumanu Adama seems to be the next sacrificial lamb for Golovkin to slaughter. He’s already knocked out his last 15 opponents dating back 5 years, and Adama would appear to be number 16. The only thing that Adama has going for him is that he’s never been knocked out during his 12-year pro career, which means that Adama may end up taking a ton of punishment if he’s able to go the distance with Golovkin. It might be better if he does get stopped because if he has to eat head and body shots for 12 rounds, Adama is going to be in bad shape after this fight is over. What makes it likely that Adama won’t make it the distance in this fight is that Gennady Golovkin will go to the body, and it doesn’t matter how good Adama’s chin is in that case. He’ll go down if he gets hit hard enough to the midsection.

Osumanu Adama has one notable win on his resume over Roman Karmazin two years ago in stopping him in the 9th round. Other than that win, Osumanu Adama has beaten mostly obscure opposition. Last year he fought IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale and was easily beaten in a 12 round unanimous decision loss.

Victor Ortiz in make or break fight against Luis Collazo on January 30th

Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) has an important fight coming up next month on January 30th against Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. This is a tune-up bout for Ortiz scheduled for 10 rounds and not 12. Like his last fight a year and a half ago against Lopez, Ortiz is expected to win this one against Luis Collazo.

The worry here is that if Ortiz can’t beat Luis Collazo, and if he gets beaten or if he quits yet again, for whatever reason, his boxing career may be pretty much done as far as him being a relevant fighter.

Ortiz quit against Lopez, Maidana and someone say in his fight against Lamont Peterson when faced with adversity. Victor Ortiz suffered a broken jaw in the Lopez fight last year in June. But Ortiz was having problems in that fight long before his jaw was broken, as he was getting nailed frequently by Lopez with silly shots that he shouldn’t have been getting hit with. The jaw injury took 8 months to heal, and Ortiz could have returned to the ring in 2013 to fight, but instead he chose to be in a movie by Sylvester Stallone and take the entire year off from boxing. That right there makes you question Ortiz’s desire and love of the sport.

If he’s going to be taking a year off from boxing in the prime of his career, it might not be the sport for him. Floyd. can do that kid of thing because he’s a huge talent, but Ortiz is just a welterweight contender still trying to find his place in the division. For him to take off a year, it’s not a smart thing to do, and I wouldn’t expect him to be able to quickly get back to the level where he was before.

Ortiz says he wants to get the big fights against the likes of Floy Mayweather Jr. and Saul Alvarez. He was already whipped by Mayweather in a 4th round TKO loss in September of 2011, so that door is probably permanently closed no matter what Ortiz does in the next year or two. But he can get some good fights if he stays active and beats some relevant fighters. There’s talk that Ortiz could face Garcia in 2014 if he beats Luis Collazo and looks impressive in doing so. If Victor Ortiz struggles, gets knocked down or quits in the Collazo fight, then you can forget about him fighting Garcia. That’s why the Collazo fight is so important for Danny Garcia. He has to win and look good in this fight, because he can’t afford anymore slip ups at this point.

Amir Khan could lose out on Mayweather fight to Maidana

Showtime President of Sports Stephen Espinoza is saying that Mayweather. (45-0, 26 KO’s) is highly interested in facing Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) next in May. If this fight happens, Khan, who has been talking nonstop about wanting to fight Floy Mayweather next, could find himself with nothing to show for the 8 months he’s been waiting on that fight.

Maidana’s victory over Broner this month has got Floy Mayweather now thinking about fighting him of Amir Khan. Floy is a good businessman and he must realize the potential of big pay-per-view numbers with him fighting the more popular Marcos Maidana than in facing Amir Khan, who lacks the fan base in the U.S to make a fight between him and Floy a big fight.

“Stephen [Espinoza] said 100 percent the fight [Khan-Mayweather] is not done and that, in fact, Marcos Maidana is in the picture as a possible Floyd opponent too after his win over Adrien Broner,” Rafael said to ESPN. He [Espinoza] said that win ‘got Floyd’s attention.’”

Maidana isn’t Mexican, but you have to imagine that he would have a much better chance of attracting Mexicans to purchase a fight between him and Floy on Showtime PPV than Amir Khan. I really hate to say it, but I don’t think Khan vs. Mayweather is a sell-able fight on Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend in May. That fight is likely nowhere near as interesting for Mexican fans than a Mayweather-Maidana fight, even though Marcos Maidana is from Argentina rather than Mexico.

Floy Mayweather would really surprise a lot of boxing fans if he were to select Marcos Maidana instead of Amir Khan for his May 3rd fight, because many fans feel like it’s academic at this point that Flo will be fighting Khan and they hate that fight with a passion. Mayweather would do well to flip the scrip and make fans happy by selecting Marcos Maidana instead. That’s not to say that Maidana is a great pick for Floy Mayweather, because he’s definitely flawed fighter that he’ll likely beat with ease. But if the choice is between Khan and Maidana, then the easy choice – and the smart choice – is for Mayweather to forget all about Amir Khan and instead face the sturdier Maidana. What we don’t want is Mayweather to go out there in the 1st round, time one of Khan’s wild flurries that he likes to throw, and knock him out cold with a left hook to the head. Fans will feel cheated if Mayweather faces Khan and obliterates him in the first few rounds.

Bob Arum confirms Floy Mayweather not in the picture for Pacquiao’s next fight

Bob Arum says that Mayweather Jr. is not one of the names he is looking at for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight on April 12th. Arum says that the two names that he’s looking at to match against Manny Pacquiao are Tim Bradley or Juan Manuel Marquez.

For fans hoping to see a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in April or May, you’ll have to be satisfied with either a Pacquiao-Bradley rematch or a Pacquiao-Marquez rematch. Either way, we’re talking retreat opponents for Manny Pacquiao.

“There is nothing with Floyd Maywether,” Arum said to the Manila Bulletin.

I’m not sure why Arum is still mentioning Marquez’s name as a possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao because he’s repeatedly said that he never, ever wants to fight Manny Pacquiao again in this lifetime. With Bob Arum still including Marquez’s name as a possible candidate for Manny Pacquiao, it gives one the impression that Marquez’s name is being used to keep Timothy Bradley from asking for too much money in the negotiations. Juan Manuel Marquez is not even in play for this fight, yet his name is still being mentioned. The only guy in play for Pacquiao’s next fight is Bradley and that to me is incredibly boring.

I just hope for Manny Pacquiao’s sake that this will be the last time that he has to fight Timothy Bradley, because it would be disappointing if Bob Arum keeps trotting out Bradley as Pacquiao’s future opponent, if for no other reason because he’s pretty much got no one else to match him up against in his stable. Once Manny Pacquiao badly whips one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters, it’s pretty much impossible for Arum to keep matching him up against that fighter over and over again. But when it’s close like it was with Bradley and Manny Pacquiao, then that fighter gets trotted back out again rather than having Manny Pacquiao move on to more interesting opponents.

I suspect that Floy Mayweather won’t be in play for Pacquiao’s second fight in 2014 in September either. I just don’t think Floy Mayweather will ever be in play for Manny Pacquiao as long as he’s with Arum. My guess is Manny Pacquiao will either fight Bradley for a third time in September or face Mike Alvarado or maybe Ruslan Provodnikov.

In my eyes I see this as the only way the fight can be made. It would take for both fighters to take this issue public making personal and not about business. Floy Mayweather also made remarks towards the newly crowned Marcos Miadana who responded (as he should) in timely fashion. If you want the fight you have to act like it. Even Amir Khan goes out of his way to say that he has the stuff to beat Floy Mayweather, if he can get enough people to believe that he has a chance at getting the fight.

I see no time better than the present for Pacquiao to come out and say something about Floy Mayweather. Whether it be pictures of duck, chickens, whatever it may be, opportunity is knocking once again and Manny Pacquiao should open the door.
In recent years I have only heard Manny Pacquiao speak of Floy Mayweather either when he has a fight signed or when asked. At this point and time neither have a fight signed, Floy is poking at Pacquiao as if he knows he will not reply.

If I am recalling correctly, the last time both men were in need of an opponent was when Floy went via twitter with the infamous “step up punk” quote. Many fans have drawn conclusions to what Mayweather’s intentions are by going at Manny Pacquiao through social media.

Some say Floy has no intentions of ever fighting Manny Pacquiao and is just throwing out smoke screens. That I don’t know the answer to, and neither does anyone other than Floy Mayweather himself. But what I do know is that he seems to if nothing else be probing to get some sort of response from Pacquiao’s camp. What would have been better than after Floy sending out his Christmas card, Pacquiao sending something out about Floy Mayweather that implied him ducking him? But as of yet we have nothing.

Some will say it beneath Manny Pacquiao to go this route in order to get the fight. To that I would say get with the program. Social media is hands down the best way to get a guy in the ring other than showing up at the guy fight and grabbing the mic afterward. I don’t want to see on the coming days some calculated response generated and delivered by Arum.

I want Manny Pacquiao to step out on his own and personally insult Floy Mayweather in some way that implies him not wanting to fight him. I’m tired of people speaking for Pac Man , social media offers a stage to anyone who has an opinion (as you are reading mine) to reach the masses.

There is no better way than at the moment if Manny Pacquiao really want this fight than to get involved while the world is waiting. I think we can all agree that Manny Pacquiao is a fantastic fighter, but if he lets this moment pass I will in my opinion say he never wanted the fight and only used Floy name to sale himself. This isn’t the first or second time Floy Mayweather has went public attempting to humiliate Pacquiao, and even then there was no response form Manny Pacquiao. If I were one of Manny’s advisers I would be elated that Floy had himself sparked the interesting in the fight happening. Step up Manny and make this a media war, if that’s what it takes then so be it.

Floy Mayweather . deserves to be Fighter of the Year

For his two impressive wins this year over Guerrero and Saul Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather. (45-0, 26 KO’s) clearly deserves to get the 2013 Fighter of the Year award. Mayweather’s only competition is Adonis Steveson, who stopped Dawson, Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew. Those were all good wins, but the quality of opposition wasn’t as good as Mayweather’s

The way that Floy Mayweather turned Saul Alvarez into a very average looking fighter. It was very impressive to watch because no one has ever done that before to Saul Alvarez, and it’s quite possible that we won’t see anyone else doing that to him until he’s in his late 30s. Saul Alvarez tried hard to catch Floy Mayweather with his big power shots, but he just wasn’t fast or skilled enough to land his punches.

Guerrero is another very good fighter, but Floy Mayweather reduced him to just a punching bag in that fight. I expect Guerrero to accomplish big things in the future once he gets busy again with his career. There’s no one else that could do to Robert Guerrero what Mayweather did.

Last year’s Fighter of the Years Nonito Donaire obviously can’t be mentioned as being a candidate this year because he was easily beaten by Guillermo Rigondeaux last April. But you can make an argument that Donaire didn’t do enough last year to deserve the aware for his empty wins over Toshiaki Nishioka, Jorge Arce, Jeffrey Mathebula and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Donaire was a controversial pick due to his weak opposition.

Pacquiao didn’t do enough this year to deserve the award because he only fought once in beating Brandon Rios last month. Rios was coming off of a loss to Mike Alvarado and he was an odd choice for Manny Pacquiao to fight, but it’s not the first time Manny Pacquiao has fought an opponent coming off of a defeat.

Floy Mayweather has a good chance of snatching the Fighter of the Year award in 2014 if he get some quality opponents in the ring with him. I’m not sure that Amir Khan is a good enough name to wow the fans next year, but Maidana is a good name and hopefully he’ll one of the guys that Floy Mayweather faces next year.

Many of the boxing fans are now blaming Mayweather Jr. for the biggest fight not happening. Even some boxing scribes held Floyd Mayweather Jr responsible for the failed fight and even commented on Floyd’s legacy. Dan Rafael of ESPN posted this on his twitter account :

“Mayweather is rich but one thing he can never buy is a legacy that includes beating a prime Pacquiao. He can never buy that. Ever.” Even Mike Tyson in an interview by Max Kellerman of ESPN’s Sports Nation revealed that among all the current fighters in boxing, he enjoys watching Pacquiao the most. In a recent poll (not on this site), 79% of the fans point the finger at Floy Mayweather when asked “Who do You blame for Pacquiao – Mayweather Not Happening?”

It is not surprising why a lot of the fans blame Floy Mayweather for the failed fight. It was crystal clear that it was only Floyd who doesn’t want the bout to happen. All of his actions are pointing to that direction, that is to avoid Manny Pacquiao at all costs. Firstly, he said all Manny has to do is to step up on the plate and call his name, but when Pac called him out, Mayweather suddenly demanded random blood tests [RBT]. After rbt issues had been resolved, he now wants bigger slice of the purse, after the purse issue was resolved, he demanded where Manny should train. Other demands and excuses surfaced whenever there were talks of possible Pac-Floyd fight. Notable are his sudden vacations whenever Pac is free, demanding all the PPVs for himself and none for Pac, offering Pac $40 million without taking into consideration how much the fight can generate (around $300 million according to some analysts!). In some interviews, Floyd already gave a hint why he doesn’t want the fight to happen. He said his health comes first. He even mentioned how Manny was able to just walk through the punches of Oscar Dela Hoya,Miguel Cotto, and Margarito, all way bigger and powerful than Manny.

We could recall that Mayweather wanted to clean up the sports and yet, he was harsh on Manny who was never been tested positive in all his drug tests, whether it be random or not, but he was too kind for Rios who failed in one of the test after the Manny Pacquiao fight. And just recently, Floyd was bringing other issues like Manny’s low PPVs and his 1-2 win-loss record for his last three fights. He even added that he doesn’t want to do business with Bob Arum of Top Rank. How come PPV numbers are now an issue considering some of Floyd’s opponents were not at pay-per-view levels? Your guess is as good as mine.

If we could remember, Floyd had some video remarks against Pac. And just lately, he posted pictures in his twitter account about Manny’s refusal to accept the 40M and finally praying that Floyd should call him. This only shows where Floyd is only good at, fighting Manny from afar! I would like to borrow Ivan Goldman’s of Boxing Insider statement on the last part of his article. “Good luck with your legacy, Mayweather. But I promise you it won’t be what you hoped for. Thanks to you, the name Manny Pacquiao will forever be entwined with yours. And not in a way that’s flattering to you.” Now it’s clear who’s to blame for the fight not happening. It is only one, it’s not Haymon or Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer or Oscar De La Hoya, or Manny Pacquiao, Arum, HBO’s Ken Hershman, Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza or anyone else but Floyd himself.

Why Lucas Matthysse vs.Adrien Broner should happen

Last week we saw Adrien broner suffer his first defeat in a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision to Marcos “El Chino” Maidana in San Antonio, Texas. Adrien broner Broner took a hellacious beating and suffered his first 2 career knockdowns.

From what I was seeing by many boxing fans, casual or hardcore at least 90% were saying Adrien Broner would outbox “Chino” with ease and Maidana was tailor made. I am one who rooted for Marcos ren Maidana and was proven right. Now we know Adrien Broner is not the future nor is he the next Floyd Mayweather Jr., and never was to be exact. But a few months ago we saw Danny “Swift” Garcia outclass Lucas “The Machine” Lucas Matthysse on the undercard of “The One”.

Despite being the Champion Garcia was the underdog and Lucas was expected to brutally knockout Garcia and take his titles in the process. Lucas started out good for the first 5 rounds till Garcia adjusted to his style and out-boxed the Argentine male. To make it a long short story, Broner and Matthysse both lost.

Why I am implying this fight – Broner-Matthysse – should happen? The fact is Adrien Broner is most likely going to campaign at 140 unless he wants to get less money fighting at 135 and defending his WBC title.Adrien Broner would be better off fighting at 140 against more popular fighters and his first fight should be against another man who is coming off a loss- Matthysse.

If Broner were to beat Matthysse that’d most likely give him an automatic title shot against the 140 kingpins. It’d be a great fight for both men who are looking to bounce back and get another shot at the titles. Broner could be a smart guy and campaign at 140 and maybe add his 4th division title, because Adrien Broner is obviously or was trying to establish his own legacy.

Adrien Broner would be smart to go for a title at 140 and not press for another backside whooping by Marcos Ren Maidana. Broner needs time to grow more into the 140-147 divisions and get more experience fighting guys with such power. An even better idea, why not Matthysse vs. Broner on the Floyd Maywether undercard in May? Both coming off losses and both looking to bounce back, would be a great fight for both men and for us fans. But what I am thinking Adrien Broner will do is, keep his current trainer (ignore Mayweather Sr.), not fight on the undercard of Floyd’s date, stay at 147, and press for a rematch.

From what I’ve been seeing, Broner is taking the wrong road, but who knows what’ll happen. These are just my thoughts, and obviously looking for the rematch againstMarcos Ren Maidana is a bad idea for Adrien Broner. Or Broner could avoid Lucas Matthysse and look to fight the Lamont Peterson vs. Dierry Jean winner for the IBF 140 lb. paper title.

Like I said Adrien Broner could be a smart guy, but it’s looking like Maidana’s beating didn’t quite give him the reality check. But who knows, we’ll just have to see.

Amir Khan says he is 'very close' to agreeing a deal to fight Mayweather

Amir Khan is confident that his mooted clash with pound-for-pound king Mayweather will be confirmed in "the next couple of weeks".

Rumours of a bout between Floy Mayweather and the former WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion have been circulating recently, but no official announcement has been made.

However, the 27-year-old Amir Khan believes a deal, which would likely see him face the unbeaten American in Las Vegas in May, is close to being agreed.

Amir Khan said: "It's the fight I've always been after and we're very close now, not too far away. Hopefully something is going to be announced within the next couple of weeks."

Amir Khan will not have fought for 13 months by the time a projected fight with Floy Mayweather takes place, having pulled out of a deal to fight the then IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in order to pursue his dream bout.

Amir Khan believes the time out has helped turn him into a better fighter as he has worked with trainer Virgil Hunter on correcting mistakes which were all too evident in his scare against Julio Diaz last time out.

Pound for pound king Mayweather Jr. has proven that he is in the holiday spirit by posting up a Christmas card to the millions of followers on his various social networking sites.

The 36 year-old, who is set to announce his next opponent for May 3 shortly, targeted the gesture specifically at rival Manny Pacquiao as talk of a possible clash between the two goes off the boil.

Manny Pacquiao, 35, has again expressed interest in fighting Mayweather by asking promoter Bob Arum to delay his next bout until May, although by the looks of it, Mayweather won’t be picking up the phone again anytime soon.

The two discussed a potential clash in 2011 when Mayweather offered Manny Pacquiao $4omillion to face him in the ring, but the Filipino rejected the American as he wanted an equal share of the pot

WLADIMIR , the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion, wants the WBC title after his brother, Vitali Klitschko, vacated it in order to concentrate on his political career. Should Wladimir achieve his aim he will become the first heavyweight in history to hold all four belts at the same time.

WLADIMIR Klitschko told German newspaper Bild: “It's obviously my aim to bring the WBC title back into the Klitschko family.”

The Ukrainian will have to wait, though. As things stand Bermane Stiverne, Arreola and Wilder occupy the top three spots in the WBC rankings and it is expected that a fight between two of those three will soon be made to crown a new champion.

In an ideal world, Wladimir will then take on the winner in an appealing unification showdown.

Schaefer gives Amir Khan a good chance against Mayweather

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer isn’t ready to let the cat out of the bag as far as who Mayweather Jr’s next opponent will be on May 3rd, but he is willing to say that he thinks Amir Khan has a good chance of beating Mayweather due to his hand speed advantage over him.

Schaefer sees Khan as having faster hands, and he points to Floy Mayweather’s fight against a young Zab Judah back in 2006 as case of Mayweather struggling with a fighter with quick hands and feet. Floy Mayweather beat Judah by the scores 119-109, 116-112, 117-111. If this is the best that an opponent with fast hands could go against Floy Mayweather then I think Schaefer is going to be in for a big letdown if the Amir Khan-Mayweather fight takes place on May 3rd.

“Styles make fights and speed kills,” Schaefer said to Hustleboss. “ Khan is one of the most skilled fighters…I think it would be a fascinating match-up and if it would happen, I give Khan a hell of a chance…Floyd Mayweather is not exactly the biggest puncher.”

Schaefer is pouring it on kind of thick, isn’t he?

Julio Diaz wasn’t exactly the biggest puncher either at 147, and he had Amir Khan staggering all over the ring like a drunk on Friday night. If a guy like Diaz was able to put Khan on the canvas, then Floy Mayweather has enough power to put Khan down and keep him there.

Amir Khan barely escaped knockout losses in the Julio Diaz and Maidana fights. If those two fighters had the accuracy that Floy has, they would have each knocked Amir Khan out. I mean, I think Marcos Maidana would have still been able to KO AmirKhan even without having great accuracy, but he had a referee that prevented him from working on the inside after he had Khan badly hurt in the 10th.

Amir Khan has long arms and quick hands, but he’s so wide open when he comes running forward throwing combinations. Floy would time him and nail him with a big left hook and that would be it. Amir Khan would be on his back and staring up at the lights wondering what hit him.

I think it doesn’t matter what boxing fans feel about the Khan-Floy fight. This is probably going to take place next whether fans like the match or not. I think Mayweather has his mind made up that he wants the Amir Khan fight. Believe me, if the fight wasn’t going to happen then you wouldn’t have Schaefer slathering Khan with compliments from head to toe. This is a shot across the bow. Schaefer is building Amir Khan up for the big announcement. Oh boy, I can just see how the doom and gloom will set in as soon as Schaefer makes the big announcement about this mismatch.

44-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (57-8, 40 KO’s) easily defeated the much bigger French fighter Benmakhlouf (17-4-1, 8 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBU cruiserweight title on Saturday night at the Dynamo Palace of Sports in Krylatskoye, Moscow, Russia.

The final judges scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 118-111.

Roy Jones Jr knocked the 36-year-old Benmakhlouf down with a hard left hook in the 3rd round in a shot that sent Benmakhlouf in a delayed reaction.

Marquez wants Manny Pacquiao to face Mayweather Jr. in order to satisfy the curiosity of the people who want to see them fight.

“The fifth fight is not going to happen. It’s not even worth it, because the people are very happy with that knockout,” Juan Manuel Marquez said. “I hope they make the fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. to erase any doubts [on who would win]. I think it’s going to be great fight and the people will be very pleased because they won’t be in suspense on what would have happened if these two fighters had faced each other.”

“It’s certain moves that Canelo is making, me, I mean, as a businessman, I don’t like,”Floyd Mayweather said to Fight Hype. “What I would do if I was in Alvarez’s shoes.

I would say, the same guy that fought Ishe; I think his name is [Carlos] Molina, the same guy that fought Ishe. Fight that guy on my undercard for my next bout.”

I agree with Mayweather. Canelo shouldn’t try and fight off of Mayweather’s card yet because he hasn’t picked up the fans necessary for him to go off on his own. Canelo did well in fighting Floy Mayweather last September and benefiting from Mayweather’s Midas touch in bringing in fans to purchase the fight on PPV. But Canelo needs more time before he can start headlining his own fight cards. At 23,Floy Mayweather wasn’t a PPV fighter. That didn’t come until much later after he had built up his name following his win over De La Hoya back in 2007.

Mayweather doesn’t want Canelo to be stubborn and choosing not to fight on his undercard just because he was beaten soundly last September. Mayweather wants Canelo to forget about the defeat and come back with him and stay in the family so that they can keep bringing in huge PPV numbers as a team. AFloy Mayweather card with Canelo on it is a much bigger card than either of them can get fighting alone. Canelo needs to realize that before he starts thinking about head-lining his own card in a fight against Molina or Alfredo Angulo.

Fans aren’t going to be excited about paying to see Canelo Alvarez fight Angulo or Molina on PPV. But they would be interested in seeing that fight if it was on the same card as Floy Mayweather. The two of them could work together well as a team until Canelo becomes a crossover star in the United States the same way De La Hoya did. Right now, Canelo Alvares still isn’t at that point because he’s only had a handful of fights in front of U.S fans. He needs more time and more visibility. The best way for Alvarez to do that is to keep fighting on Floy Mayweather’s undercards, but preferably against better opposition than Molina or Angulo.

Floy Mayweather also wants Broner for his May 3rd undercard. If he could get Canelo and Broner on the same card in separate fights, of course, it would bring in huge PPV numbers on Showtime.

Marquez expected to get 15 $ million for Pacquiao 5th fight

Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) stands to make between 15$ million to fight Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO’s) on April 12th, according to Fightnews. Bob Arum of Top Rank wants Marquez as Pacquiao’s opponent for this fight date, and he doesn’t seem ready to take no for an answer.

It’s pretty easy to see why given Pacquiao’s incredibly low pay-per-view numbers for his last fight against Brandon Rios last month. After that disaster, Arum needs a proven PPV money fighter, and the only one he’s got that he can count on to boost Pacquiao to 1 million buys and over is Marquez.

With many pacman fighting Marquez, could get expect an additional 600,000 buys at the minimum, and that’s not Pacquiao bringing those fans in. You can bet that those fans wouldn’t be paying for the fight just to see Pacquiao.

They’d be fans of Juan Manuel Marquez paying to see him destroy Pacquiao for a 2nd time time and beat arguably for the 5th straight time after having lost twice by controversial decisions and robbed by a draw in his first fight with manny pacquiao. A lot of the fans would be paying to see Marquez put Pacquiao out of his misery and sending him into a permanent retirement.

As we saw in manny pacquiao’s fight against Rios, he can’t pull in the fans unless he’s got an opponent that can bring in the PPV buys like Marquez. That’s why Marquez deserves nothing short of a 50-50 deal. If he can’t get that then he shouldn’t bother wasting his time, because it’s only fair that he get half when it’s mostly his fans that are making the fight a big deal.

Maidana conquers Broner [VIDEO]

Argentine boxer Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO's) has won his battle points against the American boxer Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KOs), taking him by the same title of world champion welterweight. After twelve rounds, the judges gave the fight to Maidana with a unanimous score 117-109, 115-110 and 115-109.

Broner was physically weak, it was constantly pushed to its limits. In the second round, Broner was hit by a left hook that sent him to the mat immediately. In the minutes that followed, Maidana continued to press in order to combat Broner, Broner but managed to keep up the pace to finish the round.

In the eighth round, the boxer found himself once again to the mat. The 11th and 12th round, Broner knew he had to finish the fight before the deadline, if he wanted to win the fight, so he sought the KO. However, Broner found no flaw in the custody of Maidana.
