For the purpose of human relations, “I” is a loser and “We” is a winner. One of the biggest deterrents to social harmony is the war of egos. “We” need to learn to approach our endeavors with an attitude of how “we” can accomplish any given thing instead of an attitude of how can “I” do this and get bragging rights for it. This is common knowledge that is usually ignored. Old saws such as “2 heads are better than one” demonstrate that “we” know this concept to be true. Imagine if our 2 political parties could put aside their childish and petty bickering and work together what wonders could be achieved. “We” could restore this nation to a place of respect instead of ridicule. “We” could be a model for the world to follow instead of being snickered at by even the most backward of nations. This thinking in the plural rather than the singular should apply throughout society, no matter the size of the group; couple, nation, or world.

Even Mr. Butts realized the value of “We” over “I”. In his Scrabble game (originally called Lexico) he assigned 5 points for “We” and only 1 point for “I”.

There would be far fewer divorces if couples would adopt the idea of “we” and banish the concept of “I”. It would be better to have a casual living together arrangement if either party is inclined to thinking “I”. Save marriage for those that are truly committed to 2 becoming 1. If you enter the relationship with the thought that “we” are going to build a life together instead of “I” can make this marriage work, then you are more likely to seek solutions (together) to the problems that will most certainly arise. If only one of you is seeking a solution you will find none that work for long.

“We” should leave the “I” business to the likes of the Trumps, the Gingrichs, and the Iacoccas. When you see congress on TV, don’t you immediately think of what self-centered, egotististical , spoiled brats they are? The sort of people you want running this country are going to have strong egos, but you should also insist that they have enough intelligence to realize that governing is a joint effort when done correctly. “We” have some now that cry when they don’t get their way and if the trend continues, “we” may soon see one hold their breath in an attempt to get their pet legislation passed. It won’t work because all the rest are only interested in their own personal agenda.

The big problem is how do “we” get intelligent people to run for political office? I’m talking about people with the wisdom to run a country, not those with bought credentials that proclaim how smart they are. If a really bright star was to enter the arena, how would “we” separate that person from the dregs that clutter the field? “I” certainly don’t have the answer, but if enough of “us” think about it and discuss it among “ourselves”, “we” may be able to solve the problem.

ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

This year we ran out of kids ghillies before Halloween. They are back in stock now and we are chasing them out the door for Christmas. Our best seller in the kids suits is still only $69.95. Your young'ns are dreaming about what they are going to do in one, so don't wait and miss out. You don't want your kid to be one of those that grows up and buys his first one for himself as a grown man. While the grown men do thoroughly enjoy their ghillies, why let them miss out while they are kids? One of these mornings you are going to wake up and that kid full of dreams will be an adult with memories. Visit www.ghilliesandstuff.com now and get your kid one (or 2).
ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

Camouflage is still very serious for all of its users except human beings. For humans, it has been serious up until the past few years. Today, one can't walk down a city street without seeing several people in camouflage clothing of some sort. They even make women's underwear in camouflage patterns. It seems the aim is not to conceal, but to be certain one is seen.

I suppose it's the same mentality that puts people on the interstate highways in off road vehicles. The civilian counterpart to the ultimate off road vehicle, the Hummer, is only seen on paved roads. If this trend continues, will we start seeing people in church wearing ghillie suits? I can see the ladies now in their ghillie blouse and skirt with the ghillie material designed to allow the occasional glimpse of parts that are not supposed to be "glimpsable". Come to think of it, as the GIs were coming home after WWII, many of them brought back grass skirts from the islands in the Pacific. Those did much the same as a ghillie skirt would. That's the lighter side of camouflage.

We actually have better and more varied camouflage today than at any time in our past. Each of the military branches has their own particular camouflage and usually in more than one pattern. Civilian hunters and other outdoorsmen can buy a military set of camouflage clothes in at least six different patterns. Whichever part of this land you have activities in, there is a camo pattern to suit your needs. For those who really want the ultimate in camouflage, these camouflage clothes can be bought in the form of a ghillie suit in a variety of patterns and can even be bought in a customized version.

For those with more time than money on their hands, you can build your ghillie suit from any stage. Sort of like those houses you can get where construction can be stopped at any point so that you can finish it according to your personal tastes and abilities. Some people who have both the money and time might enjoy building their own. With attention to detail and a good imagination, you can build as good or better a ghillie suit than the ready made ones.

A lot of paintballers use ghillie suits, and those that do and learn how to use it are extremely effective. Wildlife photographers stand to benefit more than most from their camouflage and a ghillie suit is the ultimate.

Camouflage and especially ghillie suits are not for everyone. Can you imagine going quail hunting in a ghillie suit? Your dog would chew your leg off. It's necessary to keep things in perspective about the use of camouflage. It can be argued that a ghillie suit takes the sport out of hunting and it very well could if the wearer knows his stuff. There are those who have refined the stalk to the point that they could almost place the gun against the body of his prey. Take it as seriously as you prefer. Decide how sporting you want to be. Walk naked into the woods and wrestle a bear to the ground or get fully kitted out with a Hi-powered rifle and a BDU ghillie suit with face paint and all. It's your choice.

You guys need to get busy before the New Years Eve Ball. We need to see the ladies show up in their ghillie gown.
ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

Ghillie suits are always popular as the basis for scary costumes. Some folks use them just as they come because they are great for hiding, and others get creative and come up with really unique costumes.

Your options with the ghillie concept are numerous. You can use a ghillie suit or poncho, a ghillie blanket, or if you have something larger, or a group to conceal, then go for a ghillie blind. The "Ghost" ghillie suit enjoys a lot of popularity this time of year for obvious reasons.

It is interesting to see how much more innovative the youngsters are than the adults. Once an adult has his ghillie on, he doesn't put much more thought into it. The young'uns have a far more complex idea from the get go and continue to work on it throughout whatever the event is.

Trick or treat is going, or has already gone, the way of sandlot baseball. It has been replaced with organized events. You still see a few parents dragging their toddlers from door to door in search of the dentists best friend, but the real action takes place in the malls, civic centers, churches, and private homes. That’s a good thing since the world has become a much more dangerous place over the years. Now that I think of it, kids were not turned loose when I was a kid either and that was a lonnng time ago.

I would like to see the adults get a little more creative with their costumes. Towards that end, I am going to offer your choice of $25 Visa gift card or a FREE "custom tracker kit" to the most unique Halloween costume this year. Send in your photo to james@ghilliesandstuff.com. This contest is open to anyone and everyone. Winners of the contest are to be decided by the owners of GhilliesandStuff.com. That would be my wife and myself. The only requirement is that the costume MUST incorporate some form of ghillie material in the construction. I will be announcing this contest on "facebook" and "twitter" as well as on the website.

Many of your local activities will include contests so you have a chance of winning in more than just our contest. Keep in mind that many of the churches and civic centers will not allow really gory costumes and may have other restrictions. Our only restriction is that the costume must utilize some form of ghillie camouflage.

If we get a lot of interest this year, we will offer a bigger prize next year and maybe more than just one. We are also open to your suggestions.

Adults are free to seek advice from the youngsters.

Winner to be announced Nov 1st! Here and Facebook and Twitter!
The first rule to remember in building a ghillie is there are no rules. Anything you can imagine will work as long as it actually conceals you. Regardless of how you make it, you will receive criticism from some folks because you didn't build it the way they think you should build it. Ironically you will receive the most criticism from ex-military men who are able to build great suits and are firmly convinced that their way is the only way. However, most ex-military men are well aware that a ghillie suit is just camouflage and it often has to be improvised in a hurry.

Occasionally you will get some advice that appeals to you. Take that advice and discard anything you do not like.

Many of the commercially available ghillie suits consist of a durable netting with either jute or synthetic thread tied to the mesh. The thread comes in a variety of colors and if you are building it yourself you should be able to closely match the colors in the terrain you will be working in. Even if you buy it already completed you can still add thread of the necessary colors to get the match you need to blend in with your surroundings. Some of these suits come in one piece like a poncho; others are a jacket and pants with a hood attached to the jacket. If there is no hood you can attach thread to a piece of netting to make a head cover.

While these suits built on a "mesh only" base are cool since they let the air move through, they also let the bugs move through. If the bugs just moved through there would be no problem, but they usually stop along the way for a bite to eat. This bug problem is answered with suits that are built with an inner liner of soft and light weight material that the netting or mesh is attached to either by gluing or sewing. These suits are great for most purposes, since the liner is light enough that it is still cool and now keeps out the creepy-crawlies.

The very best of the commercially available ghillie suits are built on a set of military BDUs. As with the others a mesh is sewn on and the thread is tied to the mesh in a variety of color patterns. These suits may come with a hood attached to the jacket or with a separate "boonie" hat with mesh and thread attached.

I do not mean to suggest that the mesh is the only way to build a ghillie. Many suits are made by sewing thread to strips of cloth and in turn sewing these strips of cloth to a set of clothes such as a jump suit or any jacket and pants. If loops of the cloth strips are left unsewn you have a handy means of "vegging" out the suit.

If you are going to try your hand at building your suit yourself there are plenty of kits available. Kits usually consist of a piece of mesh with enough thread in your choice of colors to build a ghillie poncho. They also come with instructions in case you have never built one before. You may also buy a bigger mesh netting a select your thread separately if you wish to build something bigger.

As of this year you can also buy a set of BDUs with the mesh already sewn on so that you just have to tie on your thread in whatever colors you desire.

If a kit is not for you then all your options are open. Gather your material; turn your imagination loose; and have fun!

Earlier this year BushRag came out with a backpack ghillie suit. This is a great innovation for those that have to hike a long way before they get to the point they need to actually be wearing their camouflage. The back pack converts into a ghillie suits in seconds so you don’t need to wear your ghillie until you get to your favorite hunting spot. The Ghillie-Pack comes with one 4-IN-1 Ghillie Suit and will carry a rifle, ammunition, bow, arrows/quiver and all your supplies. It comes with front and side straps and two drop down pockets to keep your rifle and/or bow secure.

GhillieSuits .com has just released a “Build-it-Yourself” BDU ghillie suit base. This consists of a set of military BDUs with a “cordura” lined mesh sewn on. You buy the jacket and pants separately and you can get a boonie hood too. You have a selection of camouflage patterns choices of sizes. There is also a sniper version that comes bare on the front and under the arms. That area is covered with Cordura for reinforced durability and to keep out moisture. Buttons have been replaced with Velcro for comfort and to avoid snags.

Buy one of these suits and a few bundles of thread and you can build the best ghillie suit available and make it fit your tastes. If you want the entire set of jacket, pants, hood and thread, contact GhilliesandStuff.com and we will give you a break on the price.
ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

Kids suits haven't been around but a few years and in their beginning there was only one. No choices.

As with any product, its popularity has brought on more choices, but also more troubles. The first kids suit was a quality product and the next few following were improvements on the first. Unfortunately the success of those first suits attracted the same folks that all successful products seem to attract.

The "anything for a buck" gang has cropped up all over the web and in department stores. You now find a plethora of suits available that probably will hold up from Christmas morning almost until New Years day and some do the opposite of camouflage.

To be sure you're not throwing your money away always buy from reputable dealers and avoid those products that are selling at prices that are "too good to be true". They will always be exactly that. Too good to be true.

Every year we have several folks with kids that are at that age where they are too big to be kids anymore and not quite big enough to be an adult size. I would encourage those folks to consider a ghillie poncho as it can fit all but the largest of men and can be trimmed to fit the smallest. You don't really have to trim it. You can tie it up like some of those gowns you see on TV where it goes from a really short skirt to a full length gown. Camouflage for all ages and the most versatile ghillie available.

Speaking of versatility, there is a back pack ghillie suit available this year for those who don't want to wear it all the time while in the field. Check it out. It may be just what you need.

Again this year I would like to caution folks about waiting til the last minute to order your hunter or huntress a ghillie suit . They usually sell out and shipping around Christmas is obviously going to be a bit slower than usual.
ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

For most of my life we celebrated two Memorial days. Confederate Memorial Day is still celebrated in some states, but not to the extent as in years gone by. One of the contributing factors in the demise of Confederate Memorial Day was most likely that no one date was ever agreed on. It was celebrated from January to June depending on which state you were in. I always liked it because it gave us an extra day off from work. As time went by and labor unions began losing their strength, we lost the right to a day off for both and were given a choice of which to celebrate. By the time I reached retirement age we were celebrating the one national holiday as it stands to this day.

I for one can appreciate having one Memorial Day. Each of us can celebrate it for whatever personal reasons that move us, but at least we are united as to which day we will do our memorializing on. We used to celebrate the birthdays of several of our presidents too. Over time as we accumulated more and more presidents it was decided by people who get to decide things to combine all those presidents into one "President's Day".

I sincerely hope that each of you will find something to remember on this Memorial Day especially the sacrifice that has been made by so many so that we can enjoy the most comfortable lifestyle in the "civilized" world.
ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

Camping with YoungChildren adds pleasure to camping fun. It is an opportunity to play, learn, and for families to devote total time to each other with a minimum amount of outside interference.

Family camping is a great opportunity to play games that teach. It is a time to give out chores to the children to help in the preparation of food. It is also a time for relaxation and

recreation.

Camping fun can start at home as you get ready for the trip. The children can help decide what "necessities" to pack and take in a limited amount of space. No time for video games if you are tent camping. Maybe a couple of practice sessions with the children before you set out on this family camping adventure. Let them see how to properly put up a tent while explaining to

them how important they are and how you "need" their help. When you arrive at the camp they will be willing and eager to help and will know what to do.

An expensive vacation may be fun at times, but camping fun cannot be replaced by the bells and whistles of expensive resorts. Family camping with youngchildren is quickly becoming the way to enjoy each other and our environment. Outdoor games are a great way to spend the time at the campground. Many campgrounds have fishing holes, lakes or ponds and who knows, you may catch your evening meal. Imagine how excited your children will be as they carry a string of fish back to the campsite.

I want to encourage all turkey hunters to "be safe", stay alert for other hunters and be considerate of their rights as well as the rights of the landowners who are providing you with a place to hunt. Rules and regulations differ slightly from one state to the next, but they all consist of common sense and consideration.

Rules and regulations are among the major differences between us and the things we hunt. Without them we would soon have no time to hunt turkey because we would be spending all our time hunting each other.

Not all of us are blessed with common sense, but we can all be considerate of each other and that alone will make our outings a lot more pleasant. Try to remember that the world is a much more crowded place than it was when you were a kid. It's a rare day and a rare place when you find yourself in the woods alone. If you know that others are going to be in the same patch of woods as yourself, be sure they are aware of your presence and remember that there may be others in the woods that you are unaware of.

I don't have any "turkey hunting tips" for you since most of you know a lot more about turkey hunting than I do. I would like for you to make the most of your hunting skills by using the best camouflage available and use it before you actually go hunting. Once you have made arrangements to hunt on a given piece of land, put on your ghillie suit and go find the best places on that land to hunt.

You already know to look for scratchings, droppings, feathers, etc. Once you find some of these signs, get comfortable, be absolutely still and wait. You should soon be able to watch your turkey and get familiar with its habits. This kind of preparation will insure success and can be almost as much fun as the actual hunt.

The strange thing about a turkey is that it is portrayed as a really dumb animal, but anyone who has hunted one of these creatures knows that is misinformation. Of all the animals we hunt, the turkey seems to be the most challenging. It can see and hear things that just shouldn't be seen or heard. I swear I believe it has another sense that we know nothing about, since it will sometimes suddenly vanish for no apparent reason. This is the reason you should give yourself every chance you can with the best camouflage available . If you don't already have a ghillie suit, get one online to match your terrain. Alternatives or additions you may like could be a ghillie blind or ghillie blanket.

After your hunt, show your appreciation to those who maintain the land you are hunting on and don't leave a mess behind. The solitary figure I had in mind is the Sniper. Granted, there are times when a sniper is working alone, but there are just as many times when he is working with one or two others. I suppose that's the equivalent of the Lone Ranger having his "sidekick" Tonto. At extreme ranges, a sniper benefits greatly by having a spotter. The spotter helps line up the shot, does calculations relating to things like wind, humidity, temperature; and also helps to lug all the equipment around. A fully kitted out sniper can be carrying in excess of 100 lbs of toys.

A lot of shooters can do well up to 500 yards. A much smaller number can do well up to a thousand yards. Beyond a thousand yards you encounter a very small and elite group of shooters. This group doesn't just do well; they hit their mark every time at all ranges. It's not enough to be a crack shot at the long distance shots, you have to have a head for numbers too. At the longer ranges, too many things come into play to just aim and shoot. Anyone who plays golf will be familiar with the effect wind, temperature and humidity has on an object in flight. It takes a lot of calculating of all variables in order to make the shot. Again, in this land of the quick draw you would think there would be less interest in the long shot. The idea of a lone individual taking on a nearly impossible task against overwhelming odds captures imaginations as nothing else can.

The particular piece of sniper gear that we are keying on in this article is the "ghillie suit". Commercially available ghillie suits designated as "sniper" ghillie suits are constructed without the ghillie material on the front. A sniper is going to spend a lot of time on his belly trying to get into position for a clean shot. The front of his ghillie will be reinforced with a heavy material such as "Cordura" to withstand the abrasive crawls. There are low priced "sniper" suits available that do quite well for paintball or varmint shooting, but those suits would never stand up to the rigors of a long sniper crawl.

A sniper usually would not use a ghillie suit just as he receives it. Once he is in the terrain he will be working in, he will add foliage from the most prevalent plants in the area. This process may have to be repeated as he moves towards his goal and different plants become dominant. A snipers most valuable attribute is patience. This is not a task for those in search of instant gratification.

Why is the concept of "one shot - one kill" such a big deal? If you want to live and make another shot you had best be moving. With just one shot it will take a while to figure out where the shot came from. On the second shot everybody will be looking for you and somebody will zero in on you and a ghillie suit is not armor. Not all situations call for a ghillie suit. In fact it is best if you hone your stalking skills without a ghillie suit so that when you do use a ghillie suit you achieve maximum effectiveness. If you can sneak up on someone without a ghillie suit on, just think how much easier it will be with one.

A sniper ghillie suit should have a sturdy base such as military BDUs. While the BDUs are the most easily obtained, any really sturdy clothing will work as long as it is in a color that will blend with your terrain. In spite of using sturdy clothing the front of the suit should still be reinforced with the toughest material possible in order to not only stand up to the abrasions of crawling but also to afford padding to those tender parts on the front of our bodies. The jacket should have thumb loops to keep the sleeves from riding up your arm and similar loops at the ankles to keep your pants legs down. pockets for pads on the knees and elbows is a luxurious plus. The ghillie material should be tied onto netting which in turn should be sewn to the back and sides of both pants and jacket. The netting facilitates the incorporation of vegetation from your environment and makes for quick and easy changing of said vegetation. Most commercial suits come with a hood attached, though some folks prefer a separate "boonie" hat with ghillie material and a face veil attached. Through careful selection of the colors for your ghillie you can blend into almost any environment. The greatest difficulty comes in moving from one environment to another that contrasts sharply with the first.

While a ghillie suit is an incredible tool, it can only be as good as you make it. Practice!

ae7b18a9b09b468fabe5c781f6165126

I've been reading a book by Ken Follett (World Without End) about life in jolly 'ol England in the 1300s that describes life as it led up to folks wanting things to be different. I have no way of knowing how accurate the facts are in the book; after all it is a work of fiction; but if it is anywhere near the way things were, I can sure appreciate folks going through the hardships they did to get out from under the oppression. Let's all be thankful for the freedoms we have and guard against allowing this country to slip back into the ways of our predecessors.
