Hanuman Festival, yoga in Boulder

I have never really thought of myself as a writer, mostly because as a photographer I feel I do my speaking with images. Well this past weekend for the Hanuman Festival I filled up page after page of notes on inspirations, emotions, directions for my life and the powerful feelings that I was experiencing...wow really...unusual that! Was I put under the magical spell of Hanuman and leaping monkey like into my own consciousness or simply opening my heart to the wonders that life had put on my path?...who really has an answer to that?, not I certainly. Thankfully I am more concerned with the choices that are now in front of me and how I am going to incorporate some of the wonderful teachings in to my life NOW!

So here I am, sharing in picture form, some of the inspirational happenings from watching Seane Corn teach sold out classes, to catching Waylon Lewis from Elephant Journal interview MC Yogi for Walk the Talk, to a couple who stay in constant contact for 48 hours for the Global Glue Project all the way through to the Elevation Celebration tribal dance party at The Boulder Theater. Whew what a weekend, big shout has to go out to the founders - Valerie, Yoshi and Cara for their amazing insight and hard work to have created this special festival for the Boulder community to treasure, Jai Hanuman.

I recently had the pleasure to work with an up and coming model, singer and songwriter, Mr Ryan Lee. When we talked about our shoot I relied on Ryan for location help, I just moved to Denver, and we agreed that Union Station was to be our starting point. We were working on an industrial theme for the shoot and we spent the next 2 hours wandering the streets looking for our angles amid the fading light of the city streets. We made a great connection and Ryan's great smile and ease to just roll with it allowed us to create some great location shots using only natural light and a little bounce for fill. Ryan is represented by nxt Model in Denver.

Yoga Festival

I was introduced to Yoga 4 years ago by my girlfriend Jessica Durivage, a local yoga teacher in Myrtle Beach and owner of Where is my Guru now. At first I was very intimidated, very inflexible and slightly nervous to step in to a yoga room with all the bendy women and men that had been at it for years. My practice has been slow to develop but I have tried to persevere with it and feel I have made great progress, I am now able to touch my toes for the first time since birth. But more than that I now understand that it is not about making my body twist in to a pretzel shape and hold it while I breathe in enlightenment, it is about connecting with yourself and the self realization that everyone in class is there to do the same.

This past weekend Jessica Durivage took a big step towards uniting the local Yoga community with the first Yoga Festival held at the AAST (Academy for Arts, Science and Technology). The festival offered local and guest teachers from Ashville, a full weekend of classes, live music by Kristin Luna Ray and live painting by Kimberly Dawn. It was a great success with over 40 guests taking classes and a huge building block for this community of yogi's to grow from. Many thanks to all the teachers, artists and yogi's that attended, we hope to see some of you in Costa Rica for our next workshop in January at True Nature Community.

I have been living and working in Myrtle Beach now for 10 years - wow how time flies. In recent years with the introduction of social media/ blogging and rapid advancements in web design it seems like the whole world is uploading pictures and tagging like crazy. So what does this mean for the veteran photographers looking to still make a living?. Personally it has meant refining my business plan, focusing on work that really interests me and striving to offer my select group of clients the highest quality images. I have been fortunate enough to have worked with some great companies here in Myrtle and would like to shine the spotlight on one client in particular that I have worked with now for over 4 years. Knotting Hill Interiors, an award winning icon of Interior Design in Myrtle Beach, recently launched their new web site http://www.knottinghillinteriors.com/ . On every page of the site, almost 100% of the images were created by your truly. What a great feeling it is to have been given the opportunity of working with such a talented and creative team, thanks Kim, I look forward to building upon our stock pile of images.

The Permies are coming!

I must confess that the term Permaclture has only recently hit my radar. By definition Scott Pittman is the man to talk to and his company The Permaculture Institute just completed a 2 week training a True Nature. The course included class and projects on the land with a visit to a neighbouring farm. I learnt new terms like water retention, guilds, LETS System, nitrogen fixers, grey water and designing micro ecosystems so everything works together. Wonderful stuff!. The students who came from as far away as Norway shared the common desire to improve their lives and those of others through understanding natures patterns. You guys were great to have shared time with, all the best on your projects. Pura Vida Amigos.

Karma Yoga

At the beginning of our last full day together, just before we hiked down to Nuyaka falls, our yoga teacher Karina Ayn Mirsky asked us to devote some time reflecting on the meaning of Karma Yoga, community, and what we can take from the experience we had just participated in.
So…. what had we just experienced?
For me it was possibly the most concentrated period in my life for first time experiences. To list just a few: living with 20 women (and not just ordinary women but strong and proud yogi’s), yoga practices with Katy and Karina, ecstatic dance, hiking to the ocean, big mind/big heart, group chanting, acro yoga, waterfall climb at Nuyaka, Intention ceremony, Kirtan, Deeksha blessing, painting the community center, blowing a conch, shredding pooh, talks of eliminating anywhere with Amy, carrying rocks up the hill from the river, smelling raw coconut oil (yummy), cutting down a banana tree, riding in a Costa Rican pickup, live music with Josh and Luna at the Bhakti Vinyasa Project. Wow what a list! and if I sat in silence with my new meditation practise I could probably add lots more.
I could not have imagined a better introduction to a lifestyle simply known as Karma Yoga. With the arrival of 15 new faces, for a week long retreat, we welcomed 15 new smiles with 15 open hearts and minds. Each person on their own journey to leave a soulful footprint on the earth of True Nature and with the community of La Florida.
As a photographer I often fell on the outside, someone watching people’s lives unfold before me with an opportunity to catch just a small glimpse of their life. Not this week. From the first walk down the hill until the parting wave it was like a huge family with a greater understanding of the reasons we are all here.
Watching friendships blossom from bud to flower in a week is amazing, but to see higher connections made surrounded by the ever present buzz and energy of the jungle is what the Tico’s have wisely catch phrased “ Pura Vida” or pure life.
So what did I take from this?
A bond to this 'Mother Earth' with an affirmation that I have chosen wisely to share my passions for life with caring souls and to live every day in that moment. I feel blessed to have shared my footprint with so many remarkable "V" powered women (and the 2 guys) and will look back on this experience and see the light shining brightly as a reminder that service and sharing is Karma Yoga. Peace.

Ripleys - Dive with the Sharks

I first learned to dive a few years ago with my brother, a PADI instructor, and have been hooked since. When I was asked by Ripley's Aquarium to consider diving with the sharks for a new promotion I was obviously excited and just a little nervous - big sharks, little tank, I am sure you can understand. The divers at Ripley's are total pro's and I felt extremely safe as they guided the sharks away from me with long sticks so I could focus on shooting the new attraction - A Shark Cage. Gaby, the turtle, came by to check me out I was fortunate enough to get a few shots of her posing for me. I am really happy with the results, my first dive in a tank with new equipment and I can't wait to get back in the water next week.

Dancing with the Horry County Stars

For the second year running I was asked to cover one of the largest and certainly most fun fundraisers in Horry County. Dancing with the Horry County Stars successfully raised over $100k on Saturday night with 17 teams competing for the title of Dance Champions. The show and performances were amazing giving the judges a hard job of crowning a new winner. Over all 5 teams scored above 35, with 2 scoring a perfect 40 out of 40. Congratulations to Dancer Christopher Robbins and Star Melissa Downs-Hide from South Atlantic Bank for taking the title.

This event was a huge success and the monies will be shared by BE2 and the Long Bay Symphony, congrats to Marhsa and Larry for yet another triumph.

Blossoms Events

Blossoms Events under the creative direction of Barry West transformed the Peanut Warehouse, in downtown Conway, from a rustic barn to an elegant "Anthropology Style" banquet hall. I was fortunate enough to have followed the crew around all week from load in to finished product. Starting with 4,000 yards of fabric to the custom built tree covered with 10,000 orchid buds to the LED lit dancefloor, the results, as you will see below, are nothing short of amazing.

This aged River Town is known worldwide for it's Southern charm and laid back atmosphere. The Live Oak covered sidewalks and lazy park squares make for a leisurely stroll through the historic downtown, and the vibrant art influence of SCAD brings a bustling cafe and bistro scene to life, day and night. I was hired to do promotional shots for a marketing plan. My guidelines were very loose, perfect for me as I like to shoot as I walk, at random, always doubling back for better lighting....so I cover a lot of ground.

I love Fine Art Photography, can I say that again, I really love it!. There is something inherently beautiful about creating an image from an idea or concept.

Right now I feel that the art scene where we live in Myrle Beach is starting to strive for its own identity and I am very happy to be a part of that. Currently I am showing my work at Gallery on 8th (downtown Myrtle Beach), izzi b's at Market Common, Studio B and Collectors Cafe. I will also be exhibiting some of the new nudes I recently completed at the Cultural Visions art show at 2001 Nightclub on Nov 2-3rd., it's a fundrasier for The Global Awareness Project.

Travel to Amsterdam

The beauty of travel, from a photographers perspective, is that you are witness to an every changing environment to play in. The main reason for my latest trip was my cousin's wedding, where we spent a few days in Ibiza, but rarley ventured past the gates of the villa until after dark. I did get to explore the streets of a new city, Amsterdam, and what a charming city. The canals are wonderful, the houses that line them are filled with character, trams run down the middle of the streets and bikes of all age and color and chained everywhere. The city is alive with movement, a true mix of culture and wellness in this modern city. I can't wait for my next visit.

Glass Blowing

Through the summer months, first Saturday Art Walks bring hundreds of people to down town Conway. Amongst the attractions offering live glass blowing demonstrations are Ed and Barbara Street, owners of Pop's Glass Studio. The month of March was eco friendly so the pictures show off the creation of a beautiful vase made from shards of glass and off cuts from other projects.

You only have one chance to get it right at a wedding. From the Bridal Portrait to the garter toss, photographing weddings have built lasting friendship with my brides and grooms due to the intimate nature of capturing their special day. I have been called the "best dancing photographer in town..." meaning that sometimes in order to get the shot, I have no problem rolling up my sleeves and acting like one of the family.

Abstract Photography

Abstract photography is appealing because it allows me the opportunity to examine the small details, patterns, pieces, corners, nooks and crannies that make this world a whole. The rust on the side of a boat, a plants veins, or the peeling paint on the side of a building. They are all one small part of a larger whole, but can take up the entire viewfinder in my lens.

Love of an Instrument - Service Project for the Long Bay Symphony

I was privileged to have the opportunity last fall to work with Long Bay Symphony creating an art series titled, Love of an Instrument, a collection of photographs to be used for promotion and eventually auctioned off at their performances.
This was an especially challenging and unique project as the images were shot in color, converted to black and white and then the musician was blacked out in photo shop leaving only their hands.
The finished product displays sensual embraces keeping beat to inspired rhythm gently pushing the true masters into the spotlight.

My taste in art is as vast as my taste in food and travel. There seem to be no limits in my passion to create, learn and explore. The times during my professional photography career when I was able to devote myself to an art project have always been special. It gives me enormous pleasure and satisfaction to honor my trade with how the camera can capture expression, beauty, stillness and movement all with just one image. I am fascinated by the science of light and shadow. My commercial work tends to lean more on the "artistic side" rather than technical in look, although getting it right technically be it an art piece or a food shot is very important.
I am currently working on a new nude series that whill be exhibited in the summer of 2009.

NYC's own DJ Mickey Durivage needed some publicity shots to help him put a face with the name. His super skills have landed him a full time touring gig with Rock-n-Roll legends, Hall & Oats. Mickey (that is his real name folks) also has had the opportunity to work with Mary J. Blige, Jay Z and projects such at the Tribeca Film Festival and several Brooklyn Royalty Fashion Shows.

Mickey and I needed to create a city look here at the beach, so I took him to the old train depot around sunset and we got some great shadow shots against the building. He wanted several different looks to choose from so we changed up the wardrobe a few times and even added a cigar for fun. I am honored that I can say... "I not only knew him before he was famous... I was also his photographer!" Go get 'em Mick!!

On January 31st the Art Museum of Myrtle Beach hosted one of their many cultural celebrations, this one honoring Chinese New Year. Close to 800 locals drifted in and out of the museum throughout the day eating fortune cookies, watching traditional Chinese dance andbeing treated to Martial Art demonstrations.

The Museum plays such a vital role, being the center of cultural activity in the community. Pat Goodwin, curator of the Museum is passionate about bringing exhibits and programs to the museum that the entire family can participate in.

Retreat at Bucksport

Jess and I escaped the demands of the world for a couple days at a friends weekend home in Bucksport, about 20 miles outside of Conway. We left the computers at home, stocked up on reading materials and obviously.. brought the cameras. A world all in its own, we experienced a much needed "detachment" from our daily lives.

Global Awareness Project

In July of 2007 I helped to co-found the Global Awareness Project, a 501c3 non-profit organization that helps to create awareness in communities for service related organizations through the arts.

We are currently planning a four month Art Walk Series in Myrtle Beach 2nd Saturdays, June through September at The Market Common. We will be collaborating with art groups and non-profits from all over the state to build a network of support for culture and service.
