This photograph by Nicholas Haz is from Original Artists and Models, which I found on Ebay. It describes him as born in Budapest, achieved a reputation as a painter in Munich and later moved to New York where he took up photography, specializing in dancers and actors on Broadway.

He evidently published a book, or prints of dancer in the Grecian manner.

In the 1920s a Bayonne New Jersey photographer published Rembrandt Photo Studies, a series of studies of the nude for artists. The prints shown here are for sale on Ebay.

These are similar to the contemporaneous work of Albert Arthur Allen, Xan Stark, Henry Shaw and Aurora Studios.

Adolphe Armand Braun in his book Hieroglyphic or Greek Method of Life Drawing used similar studies of a dressed and undressed model to provide instruction for artists.

A traditional method of enlarging a drawing is to draw a grid over the subject to be enlarged. Then it is easier to copy the placement of elements of each small section in turn too make the complete drawing
correspond to the smaller sketch or photograph.

Here is a link to a post from The Pictorial Arts about how Thomas Hart Benton used sketches and a grid to compose his painting Persephone.

Albrecht Durer's perspective machine used the same principal. by observing a figure through a grid that artist could reproduce the effect of perspective on the figure without falling back on preconceived ideas of how a particular arm or leg should look.

Another blog had a series of progress images of a painting from a gridded sketch, Patrick Lee Painting Progress and Process.

The grid behind the images in Muybridge's photographs served a similar purpose, to accurately locate the various elements of the body as it moved through space.

The image above came from albums printed by A. Calavas of photographs taken by Louis Igout.

In the nineteenth century artists started to use the new information photography supplied in their work. (see my post about Delacroix and Photography) Louis Jean Baptiste Igout was an Italian photographer working in France in the nineteenth century as photography was coming into its own. He made numerous studies of academic nude figures which were used by artists of the time to create their own works of art. He published the images in catalogs from which the artist could order a larger print. These examples are from one such catalog which is on sale at Ebay.

Louis Igout (1837-1880) était un photographe réputé qui travaillait essentiellement pour les peintres et l'École des Beaux-Arts. Cet album était destiné à représenté le modelé du corps humain (homme, femme et enfant), dans un maximum de positions possibles afin d'aider les peintre à représenter les corps. Il s'agit ici de nus dits académiques.

Igout Louis (1837-1880) was a noted photographer who worked primarily for the Painters and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This album was intended to represent the contours of the human body (man, woman and child) in a maximum possible position to help the painter to represent the body. This is called academic nude.

1933 Chicago World's Fair Art Class

At the 1933 Chicago World's Fair you could pay a price and draw a model for 15 minutes. This example was drawn by William Collins.

The World's Fair Art Class was not the only place to see a risque show. A diary by Trudel Adler describes seeing "As many naked women as you can see one night at the Fair you probably cannot see in all Germany in a week on the stage."

Sally Rand performed her fan dance and once showed up undressed as Lady Godiva.

She was arrested four times in one day at the Fair. The arrests were such an effective publicity stunt that her pay escalated from $125 to $300 per week.

Zoe Mozert Photographs

According to the auctioneer these are photographs of Zoe Mozert that she could use to paint her pin-ups. Sold by Legendary Auctions. I think they may be photographs she used to create her own works.

On the right is a photo in which she is posing for one of her pin-ps according to mutoworld.

I am sort of confused because at this post is a picture of her supposedly posing for Earl Moran, and 3 more photo studies of the same model by Earl Moran. They dont look any thing like these pictures.

This might settle my confusion, this is a model posed on a bed in a picture taken by Zoe Mozert. She looks like the odel in the photos at the top of the post.

In the early 1900s Aurora Studios, a Boston Photography Studio published a portfolio of photographs designed for the use of artists. One series was published in 1913 and another in 1914. The models were in various stages of dress.

These photographs and others might have influenced Albert Arthur Allen to make his 1923 portfolio.

Giambattista della Porta - Physiognomy

Giambattista della Porta was an Italian Scholar in the 16th and 17th century who wrote a book titled De Humana Physiognomonia. One of his contributions was a study of physiognomy which was the basis for later theories. Among the people he influenced was Johann Caspar Lavater.
