Now that is one massive bowl of crispy chicken soup for the soul, this is the bit of the podcast write up where we would usually announce the next theme, but technically there isn't one. However, as we have already decided that we're coming back next year to do Monthly Music Challenge 2, we offer up a little winter challenge for the keen and eager. In Janurary, Cosmic Bos will do a 'MMC 2.0 intro' episode, to reintroduce the idea for next year, and give peeps the month of Jan to jam their themed jam. If you want to get in ahead of the game a bit, then we will spin on the show any 'intro's' you wish to make for your MMC2 album. We will make one, probably use it to double up as a theme tune for MMC2 podcast, not sure yet. But anyway, you have until the beginning of 2024 to send us any intros you wish, we will play them in the MMC 2.0 ep, keep 'em short, they are just intro's.

With the year coming to close in a short while, we are going to do the Monthly Music Challenge awards for year 1, if you have taken part this year you are in the runnings for an award, we will split it into two parts, with a Gold and Silver version of each award, maybe, still pondering it to be honest.

Please like, share and subscribe to @CosmicBos we do video work too for your eyeballs

Peace and infinite love

Barbenheimer - Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren (New Single OUT NOW!)

2023-09-24T06:58:00.004-07:00

Hello Barbie boys and girls,

The partners of Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren have just released a new single, 'Barbenheimer'

You can purchase this fine product on bandcamp here from the handy embedded link.

barbenheimer [SINGLE] by Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren

You can also find the song on Spotify and all other streaming sites

Barbenheimer was born from a song that Andrew Hartshorn had originally written for his Monthly Music Challenge album, it was his Mother Earth entry called 'Terra Mater'. He had floated the idea of expanding the song to be a Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren track, and once the outline existed, it wasn't too long before Andy Jackson had written the lyric, Nick Jackson had recorded some Bass and accent guitar, and Al Warren had added some Brass, and Barbenheimer was born.

Given the fact that the video department of HJJ&W had yet to provide any promotional video material for the partners, it only seemed right that they pulled out all the stops to provide something special for the single that followed their debut album 'Sound Investments' which you can still purchase to this very day.

Monthly Music Challenge MMC 1.8 - Dreams

2023-09-17T10:06:00.002-07:00

Hello friends,

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos Podcast (the MMC)

This is Episode 1.8 Dreams

Join Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) as we delve deep into dreamland, listening for clue as to if this is a wonderful dream we have found ourselves in, or a twisted nightmare from which we can not escape!

With the world in the questionable state it is currently in, it only seemed right to let the musicians of the MMC explore the internal space, where the mind is allowed to explore freely, to ponder the more existential elements of our shared experience, it could all, the whole darn lot of everything everywhere, be a dream, or a simulation, or even just the passing thoughts of an interdimentional hyper disco chicken cruising the open rainbow road! Who knows? Well not us, but maybe some answers lie in the music of this months music challenge.

So prepare to explore the world of Dreams with the musical stylings of Mobidextrous, Man of Arun, Notehead, TexMex Shaman (& StonerJazz), Tonal Drift, Andrew Hartshorn, A Sea Warren, Michel Debois, Chemical Shift (Broken Nomads), Peter Hawkey, Hellwaddler, John Serrano and your hosts Cosmic Bos, as well as a special presentation by the supergroup collaboration of Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren! What more could you ask for?

Cosmic Bos put out our tracks as an EP on all good sites, but they also put it out on bandcamp where you can exchange money for music, it's a clever system that was developed by Gnomes a long time ago, but it seems to still be working to this very day. Here is the link to our EP, it has an alternative cover on BC too!

MMC 1.8 - Dreams by Cosmic Bos

https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-18-dreams

You can also find several of the tracks in the show on Bandcamp or soundcloud or YouTube, depends where the amazing artists post them. Please support these awesome indie artists by visiting, listening and possibly even buying their music on Bandcamp. I know for a fact that John Serrano's track 'Crisp' is available on Bandcamp and you probably all should buy it, as well as HJJ&W's track too (from the 22nd September).

Super outergalactic shout out to Only the Host and his amazing team, we love you guys and gals. And the Music Weeklies peeps too, keeping new music fresh on the internet.

The next theme for the Monthly Music Challenge is our 9th one, and it is #SuperSpectacular, that's MMC 1.9 - SuperSpectacular

Send your mp3's with a little write up about the song (and a bio about yourself if you haven't been on the show already) to cosmicbos@gmail.com

The EP bandcamp alternative cover

You have until the 6th of October to get your SuperSpectacular songs to us for inclusion, we still have the late Subs section so if you wish to submit something under any of our previous themes then you can and we might play it in the Late Subs portion of the episode.

SuperSpectacular will be the penultimate episode of MMC1, with only a final, as yet unknown theme, to go with MMC 1.10, but feel free to submit anything from the Late Sub category whenever you like. If you have played along all year, or are considering going back to take on the challenge, then on completion you will have a 10 track album, and that's pretty winning in our kindles.

Please take the time to comment, follow, share, subscribe to all the amazing artists featured on the show, and buy their music, it's absolutely worth every smeckle, the least you can do is leave a comment, and comments make artists feel validated, so pwease, pwease, pwease we beg you, leave a comment or two to feed our dopimine addictions.

P.S - Here's our lyric video for our song Could This All Be A Dream?

Graphic designed by Only The Host, what a total legend! Go check him out now.

I wrote a song a week for a year - this is my journey with the music weeklies challenge August 2022 to August 2023

2023-09-01T01:24:00.007-07:00

Hello, my name is Andy Jackson, and I am one half of Cosmic Bos, with my brother Nick Jackson being the other half (we aren't married to each other, we are married, but to our respective lady partners). We make music, lots of it, and host a monthly music challenge podcast called the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos.

I made a behind the scenes video of how I make a song for the music weeklies challenges, to celebrate reaching a full year of making a song a week. 52 songs baby!

And here is the finished product, after just a few hours from concept to lyric video

Let's flashback to where this all began.

So in the Summer of 2022, I was introduced to the Music Weeklies challenges on X (formerly Twitter) by a jolly good friend Trench Gun. The basic premise of music weeklies is to make a song or piece of music in a week around a hashtag. The week I was introduced to it, the hashtag was #NotAFan.

Full playlist of the 52 songs (plus a few other alternative versions of some of them) here

The first handful that I made I did using tiktok filters, and just my acoustic guitar and voice. In fact, quite a few of them were like that to begin with. It would be my 5th week of doing it that the first shift happened, the hashtag was Spaceship, and I love writing about space, so I wrote 'Spaceship Earth'

This one was good, not as throw away as the handful before it, the song was solid, had a unique feel to it and could easily take an upgrade, which is what happened (see video above) when it was picked for inclusion on our Virtual Normality 2 EP. Along with Morning Coffee, Burning Rings of Power and Nun in a Kayak. The list stayed pretty much acoustic only up until 14, where Plum and Dates was about time signatures and beats so I had to change my tactic a little. This influenced the next set to, making them take on a slightly bigger feel.

For Christmas I received an interface which allowed me to properly record guitar and synths and vocals like the pro's do it. So the songs started to change, getting much bigger, with layers and layers. Nick and I also launched the Monthly Music Challenge in conjunction with the Music Weeklies peeps.

From songs 23 to 52 I had the interface and the MMC to think about, so the songs drastically changed, becoming full on proper big things. Nude Beginnings onward, no acoustic tracks, all bigger affairs.

With the monthly challenge breaking things up into nice EP sized nuggets, the songs were getting a proper release on all platforms. We put them out on band camp and all the other places too.

Time marched on, songs kept coming week after week.

Until, before I knew it I was getting ready to write my year anniversary song!

I did a busking style set to celebrate my achievement, and here it is for you

It'a been a wild and crazy fun year of music making, in addition to the 52 songs of the music weeklies challenge, Nick and I worked with Monochrome Motif records on 'Poseidon's Realm', and teamed up with Andrew Hartshorn and Al Warren to form the supergroup Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren.

Our debut album came out in August 2023. Go buy it.

sound investments [ALBUM] by Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson & Warren

2023 has been so musical it's close to being labelled on Broadway! with still more to come before the year is done. I am stepping back from doing a song a week now, to focus on the other projects that we have going on with Cosmic Bos. There are still 3 episodes of the Monthly Music Challenge year 1 to go, and then we have the end of year celebration to plan (which Spoiler Alert! We are already planning)

Thanks so much for spending time with us, you da best!

Peace and infinite love

Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos

Episode 1.7 - Mother Earth

What did we all choose to say about Gaia, the great ball on which we all reside ? It will be available everywhere, but on bandcamp it will be purchasable. You can also pick up singles, twingles, EPs and Albums by most of the great artists featured in this episode. Please check them all out and share the musical connections.

Tribute to Tribute - Cosmic Bos's tribute to Tribute by Tenacious D

2023-06-25T07:39:00.003-07:00

Hello my rockin' amigo's,

Welcome to the gates of Hell! Where musicians must fight demon's to save the very fabric of our existence. Andy and Nick Jackson (Cosmic Bos) stood before such a demon and used the powers of Tenacious D to save us all. Here is the video evidence of this mighty quest.

Tribute by Tenacious D is arguably the greatest tribute to the greatest song in the world that has even been made. Cosmic Bos have chosen to honour the greatest song in the world by doing a tribute to the tribute to the greatest song in the world.

Brothers Andy and Nick (Jackson) - Cosmic Bos, have been making music for a long time, one of the very first bonding experiences with music for the Jackson brothers was the self titled debut album by Tenacious D - Jack Black and Kyle Gass created a masterpiece with that album, and it was whist visiting America (Florida to be precise, for the theme parks) that the very British Jackson brothers did stumble upon Tenacious D. Purchased from a record store in an outlet mall along with the Spinal Tap Soundtrack, Nick and Andy proceeded to spend their two week holiday learning every lyric, skit and harmony that the album had to offer. Nick was 15 at the time, Andy was 21, and their vocal only rendition of 'F**k Her Gently' on the boat ride to Disneyland was both inappropriate and hilarious.

Tribute is the stand out song on the album, it is a true masterpiece on its own. The video is also a masterpiece in Cosmic Bos's opinion. Nick and Andy learnt to play and perform the song shortly after returning from America. Several years later it would be their party piece, once an acoustic guitar had been located at a party it wouldn't be long before the pre Cosmic Bos brothers would be flig-a-guinging their way through a ropey rendition of Tribute.

Now all these many moons later, Nick and Andy have been making music together as Cosmic Bos for over 5 years, embodying the spirit of the D, continuing their quest to find the greatest song in the world and share it with everyone. They found it only fitting to honour the song that inspired their lifelong quest, give praise to the musical gods that Jack Black and Kyle Gass are, and offer to help them in their quest to be the greatest band in the world, maybe take the septa for a while, maybe even take over as they are getting on a bit now.

Tribute to Tribute is Cosmic Bos's tribute to Tribute by Tenacious D, Andy and Nick attempted to lovingly recreate the original video as much as they could. Not having access to a suitable 'recording booth' as in the original video, the lads just decided to skip all that and cut straight to the song.

Please consider subscribing to us on YouTube

And like, share and comment on the video, especially if you are Jack Black or Kyle Gass (we love you guys)

Peace and infinite success

Album Writing Club 2023 - Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren - Sound Investments

2023-06-18T09:59:00.003-07:00

Hello prospective client,

Andy Jackson here, from Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren, I am one of the partners in this musical business that was set up for the #AlbumWritingClub 2023 and I am head of the vocal/lyrics and promotional department of HJJ&W

For your consideration, I present to you 'Playing Office' by Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren

Hartshorn Jackson Jackson Warren · Playing Office

This song is one of the 11 tracks on the album 'Sound Investments' that HJJ&W submitted to the albumwritingclub competition.

This is the second year that Lights and Lines record label have run this wonderful competition, last year the partners of HJJ&W had taken part in the comp separately, as Andrew Hartshorn, Cosmic Bos (the Jackson brothers) and ASeaWarren (Al Warren), developing friendships through discussions around the competition, working together in different capacities before joining forces to tackle Album Writing Club Year 2.

Here is the full playlist of entrants to the singles competition part of the album competition.

You can vote for your 3 favourites here VOTING FORM (pick your top 3)

Lights And Lines · #AlbumWritingClub2023 - Best Single (Public Vote)

Anyway, back to the business at hand, the musical business of Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren.

Headed up by the CEO of Monochrome Motif Records, Mr. Andrew Hartshorn is the first name in our musical business, we call him the Big Dog, mainly because he's the oldest not because he's particularly dog like in any sense of the word. Hartshorn runs a tight ship, having at the beginning of 2023 assembled his labels artists and affiliates to produce the epic Poseidon's Realm under the name the Monochrome Assembly.

Purchase the album from this embedded link to band camp, and enjoy the video to the song 'It's Between Me and the Sea' from the very album. It features Andrew Hartshorn and the two Jacksons of HJJ&W.

This rather smoothly moves us on to the aforementioned Jackson brothers, Cosmic Bos.

The hosts of the Monthly Music Challenge (MMC), Cosmic Bos love to make music, lots of it, in loads of genres and styles, and then make videos for some of them, if not all of them.

Cosmic Bos operate a DIY approach and have to date managed to rack up quite a discography of musical experimentation. Working directly with Andrew Hartshorn since last years competition, Cosmic Bos have developed a close working bond with Monochrome Motif. With Andrew Hartshorn taking part in the MMC and Bos being part of the Monochrome Assembly along with...

The Warren part of HJJ&W, Mr. Al Warren, ASeaWarren, musical guru and all round legend of the soundscapes, working with Hartshorn on his debut Orchestral Suite and becoming a New and Notable on Bandcamp with it (awesome work Al). Al was also a key member of the Monochrome Assembly.

orchestral suite no.1 new lanark [ALBUM] by A Sea Warren

Al (as we are officially allowed to call Mr. Warren) is also a participant in the MMC, and once word had got out that Mike 5 was running Album Writing Club again in 2023, it didn't take long for the 4 partners to combine their unique musical skills and form Hartshorn, Jackson, Jackson and Warren

Further details about HJJ&W will be made available to the public in due course.

Thank you for your time, please consider following us on Soundcloud whilst we build our profile and prepare to take this business venture public. https://soundcloud.com/hartshorn-jackson-jackson-warren profile

Kind Regards

New Monthly Music Challenge 1.3 Ignorance EP by Cosmic Bos OUT NOW #BandcampFriday

2023-04-07T10:03:00.002-07:00

Hello friends,

It's been a busy time around the Cosmic Bos parts, so apologies for having not blogged much, it's a full time job just keeping up with all the musical shenanigans behind the scenes. Best place for regular updates from us would be YouTube. Anyway, here's our EP for Bandcamp Friday, MMC 1.3 - Ignorance

MMC 1.3 - Ignorance by Cosmic Bos

If you buy it today we get all the money, Bandcamp waver their fees for this special day, so please consider supporting us if you enjoy what we do, it really is a labour of love for us.

We put together a little YouTube short that gives you a little snippet of all 5 songs from the EP, and also a handy link to our youtube channel Cosmic Bos YouTube Link

MMC 1.3 - Ignorance EP has been a fun one to put together, Nick and I (Andy) set ourselves an extra task with our Monthly tune of making something that didn't have a chorus, and our song 'Idiots' did just that, as well as giving us the chance to split vocal duties and have a section each, with me leading the first half and Nick leading the second part, also the inclusion of my Beavis and Butthead impression just because why not hey!

The other 4 songs were all made for the Music Weeklies hashtags of March

Down for the Upside was for the #UpsideDown challenge - I wanted to write something that switched things up a bit and bought some positive uplift, and well, this some came out of it.

Gods and Goddesses of Olympus was for the #GodsOfOlympus challenge, and it's pretty self explanatory what I did here, initially I was only going to write about Hermes and Aphrodite giving birth to Hermaphroditus, but the more research I did the more it started to feel like epic film versions of reality TV, so it ultimately ended up as a run down of the main players.

Reflections of our Inescapable Humanity (No soup for you) was for the #MW200thTheme challenge, where we were allowed to pick from any of the 199 other hashtags previously run by them, I initially went with #Humanity but as the song progressed it became much more of a #SitcomTheme song about Seinfeld and how much I love that show.

Finally, Ivory and Ebony was for the #PianoSolo challenge, not being a pianist I had to think outside the box with this one, and went for a song about how the piano is a good metaphor for racial harmony and equality, music sees no skin colour.

We will make another lyric video to go with Idiots, to match our Nude Beginnings and Make Good Our Escape efforts, that will be with you soon too. In the meantime, you can see all the weekly produced vids that go with the above songs right here in this handy playlist

New Monthly Music Challenge episode out on Sunday, jam packed with juicy new music for you

Idiots (weeklies version) by Cosmic Bos for the #Ignorance Monthly Music Challenge

2023-03-19T03:27:00.000-07:00

Hello friends,

Check out Idiots (weeklies version) by Cosmic Bos

And here's the YouTube video link if you wish to see Andy doing his Beavis and Butt-head impression

We are deep into Monthly Music Challenge 1.3 - Ignorance, with several submissions already received it is shaping up to be one hell of a show I'm telling you. Our entry (Cosmic Bos) for the #Ignorance challenge is 'Idiots', the version you hear here is the version we put together for the Music Weeklies challenge, they only give you one week to make your song, where as here at Monthly Music Challenge we give you the added bonus time of One Whole Calendar month to make your song.

It's very exciting, you should come get involved, here is the link to the podcast itself, please go and subscribe to it where ever you do your podcasting (it should be there, just search Monthly Music Challenge) or direct link HERE (OFFICIAL PODCAST PAGE)

Our last episode MMC 1.2 - Escape was an absolute blast and a half, check it out!

Thanks for the review Scowsh

Big thanks to New Music Saturday for spinning our weeklies version of Idiots, and also big thanks for crediting us on TexMex Shamans new song, alas, we had nothing to do with it's creation, it was prompted by the Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos, we don't deserve any of the credit. Spoiler Alert! we've had a late submission for Escape, by the awesome TexMex Shaman, we will spin it on the next
episode in a new segment we will probably call Late Subs, or something equally juvenile knowing us.

In other news, the Lights and Lines Album in a Month competition is returning in May, hosted once again by the enigmatic Mike5, Cosmic Bos will be taking part this year, but in a bit of a different way from last year. More to come on that for sure.

Also, also, while we are doing news, the last hashtag by Music Weeklies was #UpsideDown and I (Andy) made a little song for it, as is my songwriting duty, and here it is for you, on the end of this blog, it's called Down for the Upside

Thanks for stopping by, love ya

Peace and infinite love

We added a little bonus feature to the end of this show too, as we are evolving this idea and watching it take shape. We were asked by The Word Alchemist to do an instrumental version of one of Nick's older songs, which we did, and then it seemed only natural to add the vocal and before we knew it we had a fully finished song.

So, we launch this new feature into the Monthly Music Challenge by in which, if the inspiration from the hashtag of the month isn't grabbing you, you can raid your musical archive and spruce up, rework or simply redo something from your songbook, we are calling this section

FromTheSongbook songs

And Cosmic Bos are going first with this, so here's the first entry to the Songbook section of the MMC

25. Heart Holder - Cosmic Bos

Heart Holder was originally recorded by Cosmic Bos as part of a special presentation in Season 2 of our podcast, and it's a totally banger, with Nick taking the lead vocal and the guitars pumping it all up. It was fun doing a proper recording of it, and as is the usual Bos way, we will see where this feature goes, we have plenty of songs in our own songbooks which may appear here...

Make Good Our Escape - Weeklies Version by Cosmic Bos for the #Escape Monthly Music Challenge

2023-02-10T08:25:00.000-08:00

Hello friends,

The hashtag for MMC 1.2 has been out for a week, and #Escape has produced some wonderful pieces for the Music Weeklies challenge, go to Twitter to check them out, in a bit, first off, check out Cosmic Bos's entry to the weekly

So the Monthly Music Challenge is well on it's way now, into the second hashtag (#Escape if you weren't aware), and the challenge is coming to a close for the music makers of the Music Weeklies, there has been some excellent submissions to the MMC from that bunch (looking at you Trench Gun), and all you other music makers that need a bit more time, you still have until the 3rd March to submit your songs to the podcast.

As for this song, Make Good Our Escape (weeklies version), Nick and I (Andy) worked out some guitar at the weekend, I then recorded a musical outline (using just 3 guitars), put some drum loops in, wrote the lyric, sung the lyric, released the video to the music weeklies world.

The song is about being ready to escape when things go bad, and getting out together, not leaving anyone behind. For all the crazy in the world, it's not a problem if we can make good our escape.

Please like, share and subscribe Monthly Music Challenge with Cosmic Bos

And send your Escape songs to us before the 3rd of March 2023.

We Worked Hard for You (demo) - by Cosmic Bos for #industrial

2023-02-01T11:00:00.002-08:00

Hello workers,

Welcome to this quick little podcast containing Cosmic Bos's entry to the #industrial music challenge presented by Music Weeklies.

We Worked Hard for You by Cosmic Bos

This is my (Andy's) song about industrial action, going on strike, standing up for workers rights.

#Industrial marks the final hashtag for January and you can submit tracks made under this banner up until the 3rd Feb 2023 (just in case you are reading this in the future, which you most defiantly are because it is impossible for you to be reading it at the point I am writing it, unless you have some kind of time travel camera that can film the past as if it were now, in which case, please share that technology with us)

The weekend will be Monthly Music Challenge 1.1 New Beginnings, and you can still submit your songs made around that banner until the 3rd Feb too (as well as Pixels and Geisha).

Please like, share and subscribe, and tell all your musical friends to listen and take part.

https://linktr.ee/cosmicbos

We have made a video to go with our #NewBeginnings track, which we will drop at the weekend too, excited for you all to hear it, Nick has done a bang up job and the opening track to our Monthly Music Challenge Album is, well, a banger.

Here's the YouTube version of We Worked Hard for You, with the video I made for it.

So, finally, we will be putting out MMC 1.1 - New Beginnings as an EP, containing our 4 Music Weeklies tracks (Nude Beginnings, One Pixel at a Time, The Geisha Song and We Worked Hard for You), it will be available for bandcamp Friday, so please get your wallets ready.

The Geisha Song - Cosmic Bos Remix of Traditional Japanese Geisha Music

2023-01-27T09:04:00.000-08:00

Hello friends,

The third hashtag for Music Weeklies January set was #Geisha

I (Andy) knew little to nothing about Geisha, their traditions and culture, I had heard of them, and I'd seen the trailer to Memoirs of a Geisha, I even remember the book being out. That was it though, until the hashtag was announced and I (still Andy) had to do some research.

Now I love Geisha

Here is the youtube video

To make this, I used an authentic Japanese Geisha Dance song, added some modern drums and bass, a sprinkling of synths and a bit of production twinkling, and the result is, well, above.

You can now submit Geisha songs to the Monthly Music Challenge for inclusion in the first full episode. You have until the 3rd Feb to submit. Check the podcast for details.

Peace and infinite love

One Pixel at a Time (Demo) by Cosmic Bos for the Music Weeklies #Pixels Music Challenge

2023-01-21T10:37:00.000-08:00

Hello NPC's,

As the Monthly Music Challenge is now underway, I (Andy) have turned my attention back to the wonderful world of Music Weeklies and their extra hashtags for the month. Nick is busy working on Nude Beginnings for our Monthly submission (see other blogs on this page for details), while I have been having some fun with some synthesisers.

I present to you, my submission for #Pixels - One Pixel at a Time

This was a fun one to make, neglecting the guitar in favour of pure synthetic sound, something a singer/songwriter has trouble doing, but it can be a refreshing change of pace, and since we are in New Beginnings January it seemed appropriate to go all in on something different.

The submissions have been coming in for the Monthly Music Challenge, you still have a bit of time if you wanted to get in on the fun from the start. #NewBeginnings - make a song up around that theme, go, get it done and then send it to Cosmic Bos and they will spin it on their podcast. You have till the 3rd of Feb 2023 to get them in for this hashtag, next months tag will be revealed on the 3rd Feb in the evening.

Right, have a wonderful week you lovely people,

Back to the musical grindstone for me

Peace and infinite love

Andy (Cosmic Bos)
