How to Never Publish a Post Before It’s Ready on WordPress

Blogtricksandtips1.blogspot.com - Picture this: you are working on a really long post that you think your readers will love. The post will take a lot of work to get completed, so you decide to break the task in small parts, writing a bit every day.

One day you are working late at a night, and after adding some new paragraphs and images to the post you decide to save it, but instead of hitting the “Save Draft” button you mistakenly hit the “Publish” one.

Bam!

The post is not ready, it’s not correctly formatted and it’s not even complete, but it goes live anyway. Unless you are fast to think and act there is a chance that the post will be pushed to your RSS feed, and if you are unlucky Google might also be crawling your site exactly at that moment, indexing your half-ready post.

In other words, a disaster.

I have been there, and it’s not a good feeling.

Luckily there is a very simple solution for this on WordPress: whenever you start working on a long post that might take a while to complete, schedule it to some day next year, and then publish it. That way there will be no risk of going live with the post, and once you are ready to publish it you’ll just need to re-adjust the date to the current day.

Blogtricksandtips1.blogspot.com After seeing Adam’s list of blogs for creative writers and noticing an SEO blog, I couldn’t resist the temptation to put together my own list of must-read SEO blogs. Whether or not the industry has a bad reputation among bloggers, staying abreast of search engine news can give your blog a real edge over the competition. What can I say; I can’t help but defend my profession.

Here’s my rundown of the top seven SEO blogs (ordered alphabetically; it’s really hard to rank them against each other for such a broad category).

Bruce Clay, Inc. Blog – Bruce is an old name in the industry. His blog is a great resource for SEO news and tips in general. What keeps me coming back, though, are the hilarious in-post comment wars he has with Susan. Think we could do something like that, Daniel?
Marketing Pilgrim – Andy Beal’s got some great material on a variety of different marketing-related topics, including a lot of articles on SEO and blogging.
Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO – There’s nothing quite like getting news straight from the source. Matt works for Google. He’s a great read to begin with, but you just can’t beat his blog for authority when it comes to the internet’s #1 search engine.
Search Engine Land – Although the blog itself has only been around for a few months, Danny Sullivan has been an SEO bigwig for much longer.
Search Engine Roundtable – If you want to stay abreast of conversations on the hottest SEO discussion boards (e.g. Cre8asite, WebmasterWorld, DigitalPoint, etc.) without, well, having to read them, this blog is your first stop.
Search Engine Watch – This blog is definitely one of the oldest and most respected sources for search engine news. It’s a bit drier than the others; good for information, bad for personality, but still useful if all you’re interested in are the facts.
SEOmoz Daily SEO Blog – Rand Fishkin and co. provide some great information. Be sure not to miss their whiteboard fridays.

The way I see it, as a blogger, you can hate SEO professionals for their methods or learn from their success. And since you can’t beat them (they rank too well for that), you might as well join them. ;)

How I Moderate Comments
Blogtricksandtips1.blogspot.com - How I Moderate Comments - At least once a week I receive an email from a reader whose comment was waiting for moderation but never made it to the blog. What happened? Probably I didn’t approve it.

While I don’t remember the reason for not approving every single comment, I do know the pattern I use to approve/delete comments waiting for moderation, and I believe it might be useful if you care about your comments showing up, either in this blog or on others.

Below you’ll find the factors I take into consideration, from most important to least:

1. Does the comment contain a link?

If it does there’s a 90% chance I’ll delete it. The only exception is those comments where the link is really relevant to the content of the post. For instance, the post mentions something but doesn’t cover it in detail, and the commenter posts a link to an article explaining that concept. Other than that, link equals deletion.

Note: I mean a link in the body of the comment. I am fine with people listing their websites, which will appear as a link on their names.

2. Does the commenter left a real name?

If you use a keyword as your name, such as “Cheap Auto Parts” or “Best Vacation Places” I’ll delete your comment right away.

Even if your name is not a keyword but something weird like “yaffffi” or “rakhkun,” I’ll think twice before approving it. Sure, I’ll read the body of the comment to decide, but not using a real name certainly won’t help you.

3. Is the comment relevant to the post? Does it add value?

If I can’t connect the main message of your comment with the topic of the post I’ll probably delete it, cause I can’t be sure it’s spam or not.

Sometimes the comment might be relevant, but it doesn’t add any value. For instance, on a post about diet-coke you might writing this comment: “Wow, nice post about diet-coke!”. It’s relevant, but doesn’t add any value whatsoever, so the comment will be deleted.

In the above comparison I think that Lato provides a bit more variety in look eliminating the need of other fonts. Moreover it include Hairline font weight which is not commonly found in fonts. No doubt Open Sans looks good but due to the above mentioned advantage. The winner of this stage is Lato.

Speed Optimization

When it comes to font, the second thing we look at is its speed. Today's websites need to be fast loading and one would never want to load tons of fonts for making a site look good. Sacrificing speed for fonts is not always a good idea.

I checked both the fonts in a couple of browsers and I found a minor issue in the readability of Hairline font weight of Lato. But font rendering and readability defers from browser to browser, site to site and background to background. It maybe be that the hairline font weight looks better in dark background or so. You can know more about this topic at Typekit's Blog. They have put detailed posts regarding this topic and I highly recommend to read those posts. So as I said one could not determine a winner is this section here there is No Winner

Conclusion

Both the fonts are frequently used and sometimes together too. They have become an essential part of Flat UI Modern designs. It would be great if in the near future machines are preloaded with these fonts. Would help millions to save a fraction of a MB :P Coming to the point the winner of this comparison is Open Sans. Lato is not bad either but a point behind Open Sans. Both these fonts load your webpage with awesomeness.

When purchasing new domain names, chances are they might not exactly be 'new'. It could have been registered and abandoned by someone else before. Or worse, it could have been involved in malicious activities that could have resulted in search penalties. So how can one do prior research to check if a domain is safe before actually buying it?

Site search

First step: do a site search. Search Google for "site:yourdomain.com" (minus the quotes), and you should come across pages from that domain, provided that there's some content on it. If you can see results from that domain, including the latest content, then that domain is in great shape, and has no indexing problems.

However, be mindful of the fact that if a domain is parked, it won't usually return any result for a site search. So unless a domain name is parked, absence of results in site search can be pretty bad sign.

Name Search

Search the Google for the name of the domain it self. For example, "mybloggertricks" or "abcblog". This often helps you find out about the bad reputation (if any) of a domain. People could be talking about that domain name somewhere on the internet, or could be spamming with it. Check out what results get pulled out, and see if any of them indicates some cause for concern.

If you go to archive.org, and put in a domain, it will show you what the previous versions (if any) of the site looked like. And if a site looks like it was spamming, then that is definitely reason to be more cautious, and maybe steer clear of that domain altogether. The previous owner might have burnt that domain to the ground, and you will have to do a lot of work to get it up and running again.

Buying an existing domain

If you're buying a domain from someone who currently owns it, you can ask them to let you see the Webmaster Tools console and/or the Analytics for that domain. Check for any messages from Google in GWT, and analyze Analytics trends. For example, the traffic might have risen up due to spam activity, or dropped significantly thereafter due to a penalty. You can inquire about these changing trends from the current owner.

But have you ever considered making some money on Steam instead of always spending it? You can use it to buy a game or two, thus saving you so------me cash, or you can cash it out! Sales mean a lot to Steam gamers, and since there's one going on right now, here are some tricks that I thought you might enjoy.

Steam trading cards

To make any money from Steam, you need to first acquaint yourself with Steam trading cards. These are cards you can trade, or sell on the Steam market. There are two basic types of cards, game cards and holiday/sale cards.

Each game on Steam has its own set of trading cards, provided that it is fully integrated with Steam and supports trading cards. To check if a game supports trading cards, visit its store page, and look for its Steam compatibility in the right sidebar

Additionally, you can see a list of all games owned by you that support trading cards by going to the badges page under your profile.

Another type of trading card is the holiday/sale card. Steam runs a sale on holidays and special occasions all round the year, and the most common of these sales are the Summer and the Winter sales. Right now, the Summer sale is underway.

How to get trading cards?

There are quite a few ways to get a card. Game cards are dropped randomly while you play a game. Each game has a collection of cards, but you don't get the whole collection this way. You only get roughly half of the collection for free. For a game with 10 cards, you might be allowed a maximum of 5 card drops. You can see how many card drops are left for each game under the Badges section in your profile.

Here's a trick: If you don't have time to spend on playing a game, you can keep the game minimized while you do your work - the cards will still drop!

This only applies to games that you purchased. For Free to Play games such as Team Fortress 2 or DOTA 2, you have to make purchases in-game to earn card drops.

There are two types of game cards - normal and Foil. Foil cards are rare, and hence more valuable. So keep a special eye out for them.

You can get holiday/sale cards while making game purchases during a major sale (Summer or Winter etc). Every $10 spent on a sale will get you a card (they're called Summer Adventure cards for this sale by the way). If that seems like much, you can get a card by participating in the community voting. Every 3 votes in the 'Community Choice' deal get you a card. You can vote once in 8 hours during a sale, which usually lasts 10-15 days, giving you plenty of time to make a collection.

You can also get cards by buying them from the Steam market, or trading them from your friends.

Badges and Booster packs

Getting all the cards drops available for a game makes you eligible for a booster pack. You don't need to complete a collection for it. Once you complete a collection, you can craft a badge. So what are these badges and booster packs?

A booster pack contains 3 random cards, which might include a foil card (more valuable). Booster packs are awarded rarely, but randomly, provided that you are eligible (i.e. have gotten all card drops for a game). You don't have to play a game to win a booster pack - you just need to log into Steam at least once a week.

If you have purchased a game, but have not gotten all the card drops, then I'd suggest you do it as soon as possible. The more booster packs you're eligible for, the higher your chances of being awarded one.

When you complete a collection, you can use it to craft a badge. Badges give you experience for leveling up on Steam (which is also important), along with a chat emote, a background, and sometimes a voucher.

So, how to make money off all this?

I know all this might be confusing for beginners, but you'll soon get the hang of it once you familiarize yourself with Steam. Making money from steam is simple. You can sell all cards, badges, and booster packs for money on the Steam market. Now here's where it gets a little.....mathy.

Normal trading cards are very cheap, unless the game is new. They'll usually fetch you less than a dollar. Sometimes, only a few cents. A card's price rises and falls over time, like a stock market. It all depends on the supply and demand. You can search for a card in the market and look at its price history to get an estimate on what the card is worth.

Here's a look at the price history for one of the Summer Adventure cards this summer.

Foils cards are rare, but they usually go for a lot more money - sometimes up to 10 times as much as normal cards. Just like normal and foil cards, there are normal and foil badges. But it's often not worth crating a foil badge. You'll make more money by simply selling the foil cards.

Now Booster packs go for a lot of money as well. Once you're rewarded with a Booster Pack, you can either open it or sell it. If you sell it, you'll get some decent money. But if you open it, and find a foil card in there along with other cards, you'll get even more money! But be advised that foil cards in booster packs are rare, so choose what you want wisely.

Sell games

Selling cards probably won't make you rich, but can give you a small and steady income. You can use that money to buy games for friends, who can then pay you in person. You cannot cash out the money you have in your Steam wallet.

Or here's another idea. During the sale, you can buy games at a much discounted rate. You can then sell those games for more money (but less than the official price) once the sale is over. A lot of people buy games outside of sales, so you can hit communities and connect with people to find interested buyers. You can even earn hundreds of dollars if you're willing to invest!

Considering that the Summer sale is currently going on, I say why not take these theories and put them to the test? I've already got a game minimized as I write this, hoping to get some card drops. It was considered a SEO plus point to have a site that loads faster, and much of the web and mobile development in the past couple years has been focused around speed. However, much has changed in SEO, and the focus now is on content and usability. But can great usability and great site speed coexist? What if we sacrifice site load speed for more features that help users?

This is a real dilemma that many webmasters face today. Our WordPress readers will know all too well how painful it is to have to say no to a great plugin, only because it negatively impacts the site load speed. If only there was a threshold - a certain point between the two boundaries where there lies a reasonable compromise between features and speed. Today, we'll attempt to find that point.

What does Google say?

Yeah yeah I know that you know how Google gives importance to load speed. This is why Google has its own PageSpeed tool to help webmasters improve page load times. But exactly how important is load speed?

A survey some while ago found out that web surfers wanted more than 10 results for Google searches. They found 30 to be a reasonable number, and went with it on a trial basis, only to find out that traffic dropped by 20 percent on the pages that featured 30 results. Yet, the download speed difference between the pages with 10 and 30 results was only half a second – what an impact!

Page Speed, however, is only one of the 200+ signals Google (supposedly) uses to determine rank, and page speed has only ever effected about 1% of search queries. So while it’s just one of many factors in determining your site’s ranking, it’s certainly shouldn't be ignored, especially since mobile sites can be penalized for loading slowly.

But wait, don't take Google's word for it - they're known for their manipulation techniques! There are other reasons to focus on speed.

Site speed and UX are directly proportional

If only I had a dollar for every time I left a website because it was taking forever to load - well I wouldn't be a millionaire because I tend to stick around - but I definitely would own a decent gaming laptop :).

This isn't true of most other searchers, however. According to a study, 51% of online shoppers in the U.S wouldn't complete a purchase if a site is loading slow. Another study showed that the demand for loading speed has increased. For example, in 2010 a page that took six seconds to load witnessed a -40 percent conversion hit. In 2014? That same loading time suffered -50 percent conversion hit.

In addition, around 47% of web users expect a website to load in under two seconds, and during peak traffic times, 75 percent consumers are willing to visit competitor sites instead of dealing with a slow loading page.

The numbers do not lie! They prove that besides making visitors happy, having a website that loads quickly is good for business.

In short, if you want people to hang around your site and make a purchase, it has to load in under two seconds. If not, people have no hesitation in jumping ship to another site.

We will publish a total of 5-7 Posts, where each post would have a specific Topic/Recipe. Readers would be allowed to ask questions related to that topic alone. Off-topic questions will be straight forwardly deleted and never answered. We will be answering questions posted in these 5-7 recipe posts on daily basis. The priority of such questions would be even higher than the client emails that we receive daily. No question would be left unanswered and spammers would be strictly treated.
