Yesterday was Valentine's day... but yesterday when I opened the pages of the NSTP, I practically jumped with delight. My submission was selected as the Grand Prize winner.

The prize consist of a 3 days 2 nights stay at the lovely and uber exclusive hotel The Danna in Langkawi in the Duchess suite worth USD1800, a romantic dinner by the beach, a traditional Malay massage at the Danna Spa for 2, a Pandora charm bracelet, and a bottle of Mademoiselle Ricci EDP 80 ml....

Ooohhh... I am really excited and delighted because due to my brother in law's illness and eventual passing on, I lost the opportunity to enjoy my Father's day prize last year which was 2 nights in the beautiful and private YTL Pangkor Laut Resort, after it was "burnt" . That had been a major disappointment.... but now I am so happy and looking forward to this trip, especially since I've never step foot in Langkawi before....

BBJX Episode 21-28

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 21

14th goes out to kneel in the rain all alone, in front of the Emperor’s quarters. ARE YOU FALLING FOR HIM YET?!?!? AND THEN. AND THEN.
9th, 10th, and 8th go out to KNEEL WITH HIM. OMGGGGGGG. THE BROMANCE!!!!!!!! AND TO MAKE IT BETTER, 4 of the other princes walk up and kneel with 9th, 10th, 8th, and 14th. OMG. And the dramatic music and the rain and the way they silently just kneel there in unity, OMG.
You have to admit. No matter how much you despised 8th for targeting 4th/13th, you have to love the 8th group’s bromance. They’re all so loyal and look out for each other.
The next day, Ruo Xi wakes up in her house. Yu Tan tells her that after 14th and the other princes knelt outside, the Emperor pardoned her. The servants discovered Ruo Xi collapsed in the garden.

“The Emperor’s heart is quite hard to understand. Rewards don’t necessarily mean favor and punishment doesn’t necessarily mean disfavor.”

14th and 10th come to visit Ruo Xi. I love 14th and 10th!!!
The doctor takes Ruo Xi’s pulse, and determines that she has a condition that’s resulted from long term stress, not just from her kneeling outside. Ruo Xi thinks to herself that in modern terms, the doctor is describing rheumatism. She avoids 14th and 10th’s concerns by making up an excuse. 14th promptly points out that this is what Ruo Xi always does, never telling them what’s wrong.
10th cutely tells Ruo Xi she should be happy, because 14th accomplished what she wanted. 14th modestly walks a bit over to the side, as 10th tells her that Lu Wu is allowed to stay with 13th. Ruo Xi immediately bows to 14th in gratitude.
Omg, I love 10th so much. He cutely says that if he had known about the situation, he would’ve gone and knelt with 14th too. 14th tells 10th that it’s not like the Emperor would relent even with more people kneeling. I think 10th is one of the happiest princes.

4th visits Ruo Xi. He tells her he can no longer ask the Emperor for her hand in marriage. Ruo Xi replies that she already predicted this would happen.

“You can hate me. It’s all my fault that I have wronged you.
Ruo Xi remains silent as she starts to cry. 4th tears up, but he leaves the room without saying anything else, leaving Ruo Xi there to break down in tears. Ruo Xi is completely heartbroken. This scene really got to me. :’(
Time for another dramatic hat-removal! The Crown Prince has been demoted by the Emperor. The princes are called to court cue dramatic music so the Crown Prince can give up his position. He takes off his hat as he tears up and begs for forgiveness.
Ruo Xi observes the changes after the Crown Prince’s demotion and 13th’s imprisonment. 4th becomes a very filial son to the Emperor. He withdraws from politics and focuses on having a simple life. 4th even gives up his usual burgundy robe for a plain one. Ruo Xi and 4th rarely meet after their ‘break up’.

4th: “Why don’t you hate me?”
Ruo Xi: “Why should I hate you? Because you didn’t keep your promise? What a joke. Do you have to hold onto your faith, only letting go at death?…I’m not willing to hold on and die. I would rather live freely…Only with endurance can one have happiness in the future.”

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 22-24

Note: The first few screencaps aren’t all in chronological order because I mixed a few of the scenes up.

Episode 22
14th advises Ruo Xi to stop worrying about the past.

“Affairs of the past, just let them go. Some things there’s nothing you can do about. What you can do, you do. And there’s something out of your control. So why do you make things so hard on yourself?”

4th shields Ruo Xi from a stray arrow. His shoulder gets grazed in place of her. I really need kung fu scenes in BBJX. Think of all the princes as kung fu masters. I don’t even think I can handle it.

Ruo Xi: “Why?”
4th: “If you’re injured, I would feel pain.”

And 4th walks away like it’s nothing. Omg I’m still shipping 4th/Ruo Xi so badly.
Ruo Xi and 4th meet…

“I know I’m selfish and willful. Can the two of us have the remains of the memories of just us to. Even if you can’t marry me, I won’t let you forget me. At least, you can’t forget me before I can forget you.”

Ruo Xi flicks 4th on the forehead and smiles sadly. 4th raises his hand to his forehead and hugs Ruo Xi. Omg, I love part “you can’t forget me before I can forget you.” SO SAD.

8th basically gets framed, and his opportunity to become the Crown Prince is ruined. 4th is possibly the mastermind behind his demise. It’s so sad seeing 8th bro’s dream ruined, when he worked so hard to honor his mother and go against his lowly birth status. Basically, 8th wasn’t cautious enough. He didn’t watch his every step, and was too eager to become the Crown Prince. 8th returns home, and tells Ming Hui that perhaps 14th was the one who betrayed him. Uh, what?
Yu Tan asks Ruo Xi if she thinks 14th is the culprit. HUH? This never even crossed my mind, why are 8th/Ruo Xi suspecting 14th? WHAT ABOUT 4TH? Ruo Xi ignores 14th when he comes to visit her. She criticizes 14th for not begging for 8th, when he begged for 13th before. 14th explains that 8th has deeply offended the Emperor, and is also the one the Emperor fears most. This is the chance the Emperor has been waiting for to weaken 8th’s power.

Ruo Xi concludes that the dead falcon (which angered the Emperor and destroyed 8th’s reputation) must’ve been the work of 8th’s servants who were nearby. She wonders who has the power to orchestrate such a thing.

Ruo Xi: “And who is the one that will have the most to benefit from this matter?”
14th: “..You’re not mad because I didn’t beg for 8th brother. You suspect me! You’ve made up your mind that I was the one to give up brotherly ties to do something so despicable!”

Well, 14th sure caught on quickly. So, why do I believe 14th? Because he storms out of the room, and when he passes by 4th, he asks him if he’s the one who set up 8th brother. And also, 4th is the one with the brains for framing people. IT IS 4TH. I’M TELLING YOU!!!

14th: “I’m not a person who betrays my own kin”

The princes all wish Emperor a happy new year. But, 8th is unable to come to court, so Ming Hui comes in his place. Even though people are gossiping about her and 8th, Ming Hui remains composed and strong. The Emperor gives everyone a scroll with advice on it. Ming Hui’s says “Stay home and think about your mistakes.” Way to reprimand your son. Innocent 10th asks to see Ming Hui’s. Instead of hiding it in shame, she lets 10th read it. AHHH! I admire Ming Hui so much, omg. 8th truly has a wonderful wife by his side.

“I admired with my whole heart the lady who fights for 8th prince alone. She could avoid all of this, but she came with a smile, well-mannered. She turned all the mockeries into jokes.

Ming Hui: “I wanted to let everyone know that we don’t need anyone’s pity and we wouldn’t allow anyone to look down on us…You can do it to.”

Episode 23

So…I’m still shipping 14th and Ruo Xi. AND…The Emperor tells Ruo Xi he’s decided to grant Ruo Xi a marriage. 14th is similar to her in age, and they have a good relationship. SO…SHE CAN GET MARRIED TO 14TH! YES!!!!!!!!!!

“Thank you, Emperor. Your servant is will…
Your servant is unwilling!”

Oh. T__________T WHY DID I EVEN HOPE THAT RUO XI WOULD SAY YES? THIS IS BBJX, WHERE MARRIAGES DO NOT HAPPEN. AND SHE ALMOST SAID YES. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Ruo Xi is promptly whipped for her insubordination. 14th and 10th try to think of a way to save Ruo Xi. 14th tries to get Ruo Xi to tell her the truth, but she CAN’T because…she didn’t want to get married to him. >.< 14th says that she still doesn’t trust him, and that even 9th and 10th bros are doubting him. AWWWWW. After 14th and Yu Tan leave, Ruo Xi takes out the arrow that grazed 4th. She looks at it wistfully, undoubtedly thinking of 4th.
So, what’s the brilliant plan to save Ruo Xi? When 10th and 14th drink tea, they comment about how they miss Ruo Xi’s tea. ROFL, they’re so obvious, I love them. 9th just has this look on his face, like “Here they go..”. The Emperor says he likes Yu Tan’s tea. Way to crush their plan.
Episode 24

Ruo Xi is sent to the laundry department as her punishment. 4th, 10th, and 14th visit Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi entrusts 14th and 10th with a letter to give to Ruo Lan. Ruo Lan tells 8th that because of Ruo Xi, she learned to let go of her hate for him.

“We have to learn from her not to give up…Once, I hated Bei’Le’Ye, but after reading the letter, I know that the person who is making me unhappy isn’t someone else. It was myself.”

FINALLY. FINALLY Ruo Lan doesn’t hate 8th anymore!!
So, the last few episodes have been kinda slow, with Ruo Xi’s whole laundry ordeal. BUT OMG. EPIC 14TH BRO SCENE!!!!! As BBJX progresses into more politics and throne takeovers and sibling rivalry, we get more intense scenes like this one. I LOVE IT.

Anyway, 14th becomes a general. He’s sent out to war. After being sent off by the Emperor, he walks out of the court, and down the stairs, all to the epic music. He observes all the troops that are standing at attention before him. OMG. All the princes walk out and watch him depart. EPIC MUSIC + 14TH + BATTLE GEAR = INTENSITY OF BBJX. Omg, I can’t handle it.
9th comments that 14th is one of the best princes. 8th looks kinda down, so 10th tries to cheer him up. 4th is the first to walk away. He walks up the steps, while thumbing his beads. (idk if it’s a bracelet or one of those Buddhist bead thingys) The point is…4th is pretty scary. We all know he’s got a super master plan in his mind for winning the throne.

…No that is not Ruo Xi and 4th’s baby.
But these two with a baby is SO CUTE. It’s actually 13th and Lu Wu’s baby!!! AWWW. Ruo Xi touches 4th’s face, and 4th clasps her hand. He looks like he’s about to cry, but he leaves quickly.

“It seems that he’s carrying a thousand pounds of burdens. Just because to him, the imperial throne isn’t just the imperial throne. It’s also the future of 13th, my future. All these are heavily pressured upon his shoulders.”

14th prince’s name becomes well known throughout the Palace and the country. 14th has won a number of battles and has brought honor to the Emperor. He’s basically a celebrity amongst the palace maids. Haha, who can blame them?

After being away for a few years, 14th finally returns home. He visits Ruo Xi at the laundry department. The supervising eunuch seriously has this look on his face like, “Oh, here’s another prince to visit Ruo Xi!”
14th tells Ruo Xi that he’s asked the emperor to forgive Ruo Xi, and for her hand in marriage. But he found out that Ruo Xi rejected the emperor’s marriage arrangement before.

14th: “Why do you dislike me so much…you’d rather stay here, and wash clothes, but don’t want to marry me, right?…I have enough patience to wait for your answer.”
Ruo Xi: “It’s not your fault. You’re good, very good. It’s my fault.
14th: “Then I’m going to ask you…in your heart, do you have someone else? *silence* Fine. You already gave me an answer. Is it 8th prince or 4th prince?…looks like it’s 4th prince.”

LOL I love how 14th doesn’t even have to ask Ruo Xi anything, when she’s silent or gives a roundabout answer, 14th already knows the truth.
14th sits next to Ruo Xi, and says that ever since Ruo Xi risked her life for him in the horse race,

“I’ve determined to treat you the same way as 13th prince. Treat you as a friend, and treat you sincerely. I try my best to be your friend. I have achieved that, or at least I can say I have a clear conscience.”

OMG I LOVE 14TH.

“You still aren’t willing to marry me, right? *Ruo Xi only smiles at him* Whatever.”

LOL. “WHATEVER.” AHHHHHHHH 14TH. 14th reminds her again to follow the doctors advice to worry less and let go. AWWWWWWWWWWW.
At the end, Ruo Xi is brought back to serve in the palace because the Emperor is nearing the end of his life.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 25

So, Ruo Xi resumes serving the Emperor. Continuing from episode 24, the Empress visits the Emperor. Ruo Xi asks Eunuch Li if he thinks 4th or 14th will become Emperor. Eunuch Li scolds Ruo Xi for being so curious, saying that they need to stay out of the palace affairs.
The Emperor asks the Empress which prince she prefers. We all know she’s completely lying when she says it doesn’t matter; they’re both her sons! [By the way, don't you love the earrings the ladies wear in the palace? They're so pretty that I would get my ears pierced just to wear them.]

Kang Xi: “Out of these two brothers, which one do you like?
Empress: The two of them are both my sons. There is no difference.
Kang Xi: To me, you’re more strict towards 4th prince.
Empress: …I only wish he can be a good role model for 14th prince.
Kang Xi:…Sometimes I suspect that the silent and reticent character of 4th prince was just because you were two strict towards him.

Here’s where I feel really bad for 4th, because his mom rejects him for no reason at all. He’s like the black sheep in his family. 8th was fortunate to have such a supportive mom. Even though she wasn’t of as high a status as the Empress, she loved 8th with all her heart. Whereas 4th never had a loving mom.

Unfortunately, a ruler of a country cannot be the same as regular normal people. Go out to work after sunrise. Come home for rest after sunset.

The Empress says that the princes are all true to the Emperor. The Emperor says that true or fake, it doesn’t matter.

“I only care about their future. They are all my own blood and flesh. I really hope the brothers won’t destroy each other.

Back to Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi wonders what the outcome will be if 14th or 4th ascends the throne. Ruo Xi’s reasoning makes complete sense. Which should be sacrificed–4th’s dream or the lives of the princes and other opponents?

“Emotionally, I hope it will not happen. I don’t want 4th prince to be upset, disappointed, and in pain. Rationally, I think that is the best solution to everything. 14th prince steps on the throne, everyone could still be alive. If 14th prince steps on the throne, will he really not kill those brothers who were not on his side?

The Emperor’s condition continues to worsen. The Eunuchs order all exits to be sealed off. No one can leave the palace. This is part of their plan to make sure no word spreads about the Emperor’s impending death.

4th intensely practices his calligraphy as he repeats the Emperor’s words in his head:

“I already ordered someone to draft the decree to give 14th prince the throne. Later on you’ll assist him with all your heart.

He writes the character for “peace”. After a eunuch informs him of the quarantine, (is that what it would be called?) 4th writes another character. *insert dramatic music here*
4th thinks to himself,

“The win or loss of so many years of hard work will all be determined by now.

He decides to prepare to enter the palace, leaving behind his calligraphy, which bears the character: Action.
Back in the Emperor’s room, the servants and officials are all waiting by his bedside. The Emperor passes away, and all the servants bow and begin to mourn. And, just like that, one of the officials goes, “oh, the emperor just told me the decree was drafted to pass the throne to 4th prince..and then he fainted!”

As the official says this, Eunuch Li looks at him in suspicion. With perfect timing, 4th enters the room and falls on his knees by the Emperor’s bed. The camera focuses on Ruo Xi to show her tearing up. The official takes this opportunity to reassert that 4th will be the new emperor. He bows in greeting to 4th, already calling him the emperor.
All the servants just sit there, until Ruo Xi bows and greets 4th as emperor. After looking at Ruo Xi bowing, Eunuch Li is the last one to bow to 4th.
4th orders that those who witnessed the Emperor’s death must be put in confinement so that the news doesn’t spread. Ruo Xi stays a week in a solitary room.

At court, 8th, 9th, and 10th come to confront 4th. They don’t address him as “emperor” yet. They’re suspicious of his ascension to the throne. Both 9th and 10th are outspoken and indignant about 4th’s actions. 8th keeps them in line, and reasons with 4th, asking how the emperor could change his will while he was dying. 4th orders Eunuch Li to recite the decree that granted 4th the throne. 9th calls out Eunuch Li for going along with 4th’s ploy.

“Didn’t my royal father treat you well when he was alive? However you dare to fake the Imperial order…

…Obviously, 4th’s kingship isn’t going so well with the other princes.
Suddenly a high ranking army official arrives to greet 4th. This puts 8th, 9th, and 10th back in line, because they know they can’t rival 4th’s military support. 4th grants 8th a position. 8th has no choice but to withdraw and accept 4th’s offer.
Back at 8th’s place, the three brothers fume over 4th getting the upper hand. 8th assures the brothers that although 4th controlled the opportune moment, 4th will have a lot of obstacles ahead. They’ll have a chance to push 4th off the throne eventually. 9th mentions that 4th’s mom won’t accept 4th’s kingship either.

So, here’s where I want 4th to become the best emperor ever just to prove himself to his mom. While gripping the white bangle 4th gave her, the Empress questions 4th…

“Tell me the truth. Are you really faking the posthumous decree?…He would never pass the throne to you!”

4th says that it doesn’t matter whether he or 14th ascends the throne, because she’ll still be Empress Dowager either way.

“..Why do you favor 14th brother? You really believe that I won’t be a good emperor?

The Empress throws his bracelet to the ground, shattering it to pieces. Poor 4th looks stunned.

“I need to follow the former Emperor’s posthumous wishes. Whether your Imperial Father gave the throne to my own son or not, I still speak for him.”
4th: “The Imperial Throne belongs to me. It is right and proper.”
“Right and proper? Is it really right and proper? Your heart knows better than anyone else…Even though everyone sees you as king, I don’t consider you to deserve it.”

…Obviously, things aren’t going so well with his mom either. I feel so bad for 4th. His eyes are so full of hurt. He’s never been accepted by his mom, even when he becomes Emperor. SHOW HER 4TH, SHOW HER!

Back to Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi is finally released from the quarantine. She reenters the palace, and sees 13th prince for the first time in 10 years. AHHHHHH. 13th looks haggard and has lost his former energy. Both Ruo Xi and 13th seem to be equally tired and weak. How ironic, when they used to be the “fearless” troublemakers.

Ruo Xi delays seeing 4th prince. But, 4th prince beats her to it, and visits her while she’s falling asleep. He simply wants to sleep beside her because he’s tired.

“This moment, I have hoped for it for a very long time. Just the two of us, belonging to each other. What is past is past.

4th has the shortest dream ever, and suddenly wakes up while calling Ruo Xi’s name. I expect them to start kissing, but THEY DON’T. 4th must be trying to restrain himself, because he leaves to go “take care of other business”. Yeahhhhh.
The next day, Yu Tan begs Ruo Xi to let her stay in the palace. Ruo Xi gets a beautiful new white outfit. (White is the color of mourning.)
4th brings 13th and 8th to show them something….the official that betrayed 4th is torn apart by horses. OMGGGGGGGGG. I was shocked by 4th’s decision to use HORSES, rather than giving him poison. DEFINITELY A FEAR TACTIC here. There’s a reason why he’s showing the official’s execution IN FRONT OF 8TH. Even 13th looks shocked.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 26

Ruo Xi, 4th, and 14th get to eat together after being separated for 10 years. Ruo Xi thinks to herself that although they’ve been separated for so long, their reunion isn’t as happy as she thought it would be. 13th is very reserved and formal with 4th, always addressing him as “Emperor” and following the rules of etiquette.

“I wish for everyone else to respect me, even fear me, but I don’t want him to be like that. I’m always his 4th brother, not the Emperor to him.

Ruo Xi tries to reassure 4th by saying that 13th has to adjust to all the changes he’s gone through after being released from house arrest. He’ll eventually get used to it and warm up. Ruo Xi and 4th clasp hands.

“You two are the most important people to me.”

A doctor examines Ruo Xi. He determines that Ruo Xi’s illness is long-term due to stress. (Like a previous doctor diagnosed before) The doctor says that if Ruo Xi follows the prescription, the most he can guarantee her is 10 years. Poor 4th looks conflicted, while Ruo Xi calmly accepts the doctor’s prediction. (She’s probably already been anticipating this.)
After the doctor leaves, 4th back-hugs Ruo Xi and says he’s sorry. Ruo Xi calmly turns to face him..

“Don’t push all misfortunes onto yourself. Everything is fine now, but after 10 years, I don’t know if I want more time.”

Lu Wu and 13th!!! We don’t have enough of this love story!!! 13th tells Lu Wu that he must take care of all court matters himself, because other court officials can’t be trusted.
Lu Wu says that she doesn’t deserve to be treated this well by 13th.

“What ‘don’t deserve’? The most worthy event of my life is to have you by my side.”

13th says that he wants Lu Wu to become his Ce’Fujin. Lu Wu backs away and declines. She doesn’t want any titles–being with 13th is enough.

“These past ten years, if not for you, I would not be able to pass through. Now, I don’t want you to suffer from anything.”

4th and Ruo Xi live their dream life as a couple. Ruo Xi reads while 4th does some work. 4th has this huge grin on his face. AHHHHHH. ~~They must have a happy ending they must have a happy ending they must..darn it, I already know the ending.~~ Ruo Xi makes sure that 4th goes to bed instead of staying up late. 4th asks to sleep by Ruo Xi’s side because he has insomnia. Only when he’s with Ruo Xi can he truly sleep soundly. Awwww. Ruo Xi gives 4th a peck on the lips before going to sleep.

In the morning, 4th hugs Ruo Xi and tells her that he’s afraid their meeting was just a dream. Ruo Xi gives him a kiss on the cheek and asks him if a dream has that. 4th: “Do you really want to know?” AHAHAHA. OH, 4TH!
The Empress Dowager interrogates Eunuch Li about what really happened on the day of the Emperor’s death. Eunuch Li is clearly uncomfortably trying to maintain that 4th is the heir. He’s in a tough spot because he can’t tell the Empress the truth…it’s too big of a risk. As if on cue, 4th shows up and takes away Eunuch Li.
I had my breath held the entire time while watching this scene with Eunuch Li:

4th says that he wants to thank Eunuch Li for serving the former Emperor. Eunuch Li bows and says he doesn’t dare to accept. 4th: “Serve the wine.” OMG EUNUCH LI KNOWS WHAT’S COMING. AUGH AUGH AUGH. AND….EUNUCH WANG IS SERVING THE ‘WINE’. AHHHHHH.
Poor Eunuch Wang trembles as he walks forward, bringing the tray with the ‘wine’. HE KNOWSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! He gets on his knees and offers the wine to Eunuch Li. *cue intense music*
Eunuch Li raises his head and looks right at Eunuch Wang. AHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Time for the most dramatic hat removal EVER. Eunuch Li looks at 4th, and then raises his hands toward his hat. He calmly takes off his hat, glancing over at it as he lowers it.

“I think your Majesty for your kind favor, to let me have the chance to continue to serve the previous emperor.”

Eunuch Li places his hat on the ground, and takes the ‘wine’ glass with both hands. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. He drinks it all in one gulp and slowly puts down the cup. Eunuch Wang closes his eyes. 4th is watching the whole time.
The poison works quickly, and Eunuch Li collapses to the ground, instantly dead. 4th finally unclenches his fist, and he tears up. If I were Eunuch Wang, I’d probably start bawling right then and there. EUNUCH LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, in case you didn’t pick up on that…it wasn’t wine. It was poison. 4th had Eunuch Li killed in order to remove any question about his legitimacy. Eunuch Li’s death is more dramatic than the former Emperor’s. I’m not even kidding. Omg. )’:
So why are these hat-removals so dramatic? In 13th’s case, he’s giving up his reputation and his freedom. Crown Prince gave up his right to the throne. And Eunuch Li GAVE UP HIS LIFE. AHHHHH. It was so sad when Eunuch Li looked at his hat while he took it off. It’s like the symbol of his loyalty to the former Emperor and his life’s hard work.
More hints of 4th’s harsh ways are revealed when Ruo Xi and Yu Tan see a servant being severely beaten. Yu Tan informs Ruo Xi about her worries. Ruo Xi assures Yu Tan that she’ll take care of her.
Time for fake CG scene of 4th riding a fake horse in the night! I don’t get why they couldn’t just film 4th riding a horse at night…….the fake scene kinda ruined the coolness. Oh, and we get to see a fake crow!

Yup, 14th is back!!!! The first thing 14th does is go to the Emperor’s altar. All the royal officials and princes are at the altar. 10th, 9th, and 8th all look glad to see 14th back. Interestingly enough, it also shows 13th’s reaction. 4th arrives after 14th bows before the altar. 14th tears up…

“Imperial Father, I’ve arrived late. I couldn’t be with you at your passing. I am not filial.”

14th bows with his head to the ground and then gets up. *cue SUPER INTENSE MUSIC. You don’t even know how intense it is without the amazing OST.*

He turns to look at 4th with indignant, grieving eyes, and then walks slowly toward him. He stops and intensely glares at 4th, without greeting him as emperor. The tension is immense. OMGGGG 14TH’S STAREEEE. A servant goes, “How dare you not greet the Emperor?” only to be promptly side-kicked by 14th. The servant literally flies 10 feet just from 14th’s kick. This is so epic, omg. 13th looks at 14th leaving. Is it just me or does he look kinda sad?
4th calmly orders 14th’s general title to be removed. 8th’s group looks shocked. I feel pretty bad for 14th now. 4th may get the throne, but 14th gets amazingly epic scenes.
We’re just going from one intense scene to another! 13th tells 4th/Ruo Xi that Lu Wu left a note and disappeared. 13th desperately searches for Lu Wu.
We see Lu Wu at a pier by a lake. She has a flashback…

Lu Wu is ridiculed by 13th’s other wives. One of the wives suggests that Lu Wu let someone else raise her daughter (Cheng Huan) instead. Otherwise, people will look down on Cheng Huan for having a mother of low status. For the final punch, the wife snidely says that Lu Wu has shamed 13th. Lu Wu takes this all silently, and she sobs after the wife leaves.

Lu Wu takes Cheng Huan out to see some wildflowers. She and Cheng Huan bow to her deceased grandparents. Lu Wu apologizes out loud to them for not being a filial daughter. She tells Cheng Huan to bow to her grandparents in the future. OMG NOOOOOOOOOO. SHE’S GETTING READY TO LEAVE HER!!!!!

Bu Bu Jing Xi episode 27

13th frantically searches for Lu Wu on horseback along with a lot of eunuchs. Lu Wu sadly looks over the lake, and has a flashback to the night she left him. She places a letter next to 13th, who’s fast asleep on his desk. With a tear in her eye, she reaches out her hand to touch 13th’s face, but can’t bear to do so. She leaves quickly.
Back in the present, a eunuch sees Lu Wu’s distant figure and informs 13th. But 13th gets there too late. He desperately calls her name several times, before turning away to go search elsewhere. We see bubbles in the water…and Lu Wu drifting toward the bottom of the lake. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Back in the palace, 4th tells Ruo Xi about his worries. Without 13th by his side, he feels vulnerable because he can’t tell what the other princes/officials are thinking.

“I was thinking what’s behind their masks. Loyal on the outside, just how much is genuine. I finally understand why kings are so aloof. When 13th was with me, I never felt this alone.”

Ruo Xi grasps his hands and says it’ll be fine once they find Lu Wu. An official reports to 4th that they found Lu Wu’s body in the river. 4th instructs him not to let anyone know, especially 13th.

Ruo Xi is in the other room, behind a jeweled curtain divider. (don’t know how else to describe those things..) The camera blurs 4th and shows Ruo Xi in the background. She hears the news and raises her hand to her mouth in shock. Omg I love the way they used the curtain thing. So pretty.

“Lu Wu couldn’t be this heartless. How can 13th prince deal with this? And Cheng Huan?…who will raise her?”

Ruo Xi is shocked by the news and cries for 13th, Lu Wu, and his daughter. She falls to the ground, and cries in 4th’s arms.

10 days later, 13th is still searching for Lu Wu since 4th doesn’t tell 13th the truth. Time for 13th angst.
13th drinks away his worries while looking at a painting of Lu Wu. His tears fall on her painting. AUGH AUGH AUGH. Ruo Xi remains worried about 13th’s wellbeing. 4th asks Ruo Xi to go talk to 13th, since he hasn’t come to court in a long time. 4th holds Ruo Xi’s hand before Ruo Xi walks away to go to 13th’s house. AUGH the shot where they show Ruo Xi’s hand leaving 4th’s hand is so symbolic of what is to come. :’(
And..I forgot to add these screencaps, but 13th has a lovely memory of when he painted Lu Wu’s portrait.

Ruo Xi visits 13th, who’s drinking in a dark room full of paintings of Lu Wu. I love the way they put Lu Wu’s painting in the background during the conversation.

“Why did she have to go? In just a few words, she’s erased the past ten years of our life together. Why? Even if there was something wrong with me, what about Cheng Huan? Why? Why?”

For that moment, Ruo Xi can only stay silent and look at 13th with sad eyes. She takes a drink of alcohol before beginning her long speech.

Ruo Xi drinks next to 13th and tells her story. 13th smokes the entire time, looking thoughtful. She recites an old letter she got from Lu Wu, which talks about Lu Wu’s tragic family background.

“She stayed with you in a difficult place for 10 years. That was her love for you. Now that she left by herself was because of her filial piety. If you sincerely love her, then please don’t compel her again. Let her in Jiang’nan live peacefully.”

Ruo Xi puts down the alcohol bottle and walks out, leaving 13th with a poem..

“I am destined to be separate from this love…If I live freely to allow wild flowers on my head, don’t ask me where I return to.”

Ruo Xi visits Cheng Huan and then talks alone with one of 13th’s wives. (The one who’s basically behind Lu Wu deciding to commit suicide.) Ruo Xi asks the wife what she told Lu Wu. She pretends not to know what Ruo Xi is talking about. Ruo Xi promptly grabs the wife and fiercely says that if she didn’t have a child, she would be dead. That was SO INTENSE.

Back at the palace, Ruo Xi tells 4th what happened. She says she suggested to 13th that Lu Wu was a victim of the Ming case (which resulted in the slaughter of her family) to help him let her go. Ruo Xi says that since she had to lie to 13th for the first time, she didn’t think it’d matter if it was a big or small lie. But she sees from the look on 4th’s face that he already knows the truth–in fact, what Ruo told 13th is TRUE. Whew. So…although Ruo Xi was lying, and thought what she said was a lie, she wasn’t because it turns out to be the truth. Confusing I know.
4th explains that when 13th requested to make Lu Wu his Fu Jin, 4th investigated her background per tradition. However, when he found out her background, he was unable to grant the marriage because it’d cause a ruckus amongst 8th’s gang.

As if on cue, we get a discussion amongst 8th’s group! This scene is perfect. The dark room reflects their bleak situation and heavy moods. I have to say that this conversation is one of the most significant ones in a long while.
9th informs the group about 13th and Lu Wu’s situation. 14th comments that 13th bro must be very sad. 9th, on the other hand, is unsympathetic and indignantly says that they were sad too when 4th and 13th made them suffer. If they had used Lu Wu to implicate 13th/4th, maybe 8th could’ve been emperor. 8th quietly puts 9th back into his place, and 14th backs up 8th’s opinion. It’s clear that 9th is the calculating one, while 8th and 14th have more empathy for their brother.

8th: “Why pour salt on his wound?”
9th: “8th brother, you want to be a good man.”
8th: “A person with novel character will take things the right way. The problems between men shouldn’t involve women.”
14th: “What 8th brother said is right. 13th brother was house-arrested for 10 years. During that time, only Lu Wu stayed with him. One can imagine how important Lu Wu is to 13th brother.”
8th: “…How do you think 13th brother would endure that?”
14th: “If he weren’t born in the Imperial Family, everything would turn out wonderfully. Too bad, we, as soon as we were born, were stranded in a big cage.”

At 14th’s last comment, 9th closes his eyes tiredly, 10th straightens up a bit, and 8th looks sad and grave. OMGGGGGG. THESE FOUR!!!!!!! I can’t help it, I love them. This scene is just too good!

Ruo Xi happily goes to visit 4th. However, she overhears the eunuch ask 4th to choose which lady to spend the night with. 4th quickly chooses another lady’s nameplate. Which means he’s not staying with Ruo Xi. Yup, this is part of the sacrifice you make to be the emperor’s woman. You share him with a whole bunch of other women.
Love the way Ruo Xi’s uncertainty is portrayed with the blurred plants/objects in front of her. Ruo Xi abruptly decides to leave, angry that 4th has such divided affections. She stays at Yu Tan’s place. Yu Tan informs Ruo Xi about which lady 4th is with, but assures her that his heart is with Ruo Xi.

The next day, Ruo Xi is mad at 4th. 4th, cutely enough, is happy that she’s jealous, and catches her in a backhug. He tells her he’ll do whatever she wants him to. Ruo Xi tells him to turn around, and surprises 4th by grabbing his braid. She makes him promise that only she can touch his hair. 4th cutely says that only she would dare to. Ruo Xi holds out her hand. 4th puts his hand in hers, but she slaps his hand, and holds out her hand again. 4th is confused, but Ruo Xi says she wants the handbag. 4th tries to go get it, but Ruo Xi is still holding onto his braid. ROFL.

4th visits Ruo Xi, who’s embroidering a New Year’s gift for Concubine De. 4th says that she’d rather have a different gift–that Ruo Xi becomes his wife and bears her a grandson. AWKWARD…

4th visits his mom while 14th is drinking tea with her. 14th begins to do the special bow to 4th, but 4th excuses him before he gets the chance to. 14th insists on following the etiquette “Little brother greets the Emperor.” This is another awkward encounter–4th, 14th, and their mom all together…
4th asks his mom why she’s refusing the title of Empress Dowager. She asks him if he really doesn’t know.

“You took over the imperial throne. Who let you take the Imperial Throne?”
4th: “It’s the Imperial Father.”
“Imperial Father wants to give the throne to you, or to your little brother?”
4th: “It’s me.”

4th asks how he could possibly have usurped the throne. She replies that he has great foresight.

14th: “Mother, these lies and rumors are made up by people with intentions. Mother, don’t be angry.”
Mom: “Look, even at this time, your blood brother is still on your side.”
4th: “Can it be that I’m not your son too?”

14th tries to calm mom down:

“The truth or the lie, what’s done is done, as long as brother is a good emperor, bringing wealth to his people, who’s emperor doesn’t matter.”

I feel bad for 14th for not getting his rightful throne, but I also feel bad for 4th, who’s always rejected by his mom. :’( I think 4th really needs a hug now.

4th: “My mother just has 14th brother in her heart. It doesn’t matter what I do, I could never compare to him..Do you think I’ll be a good emperor?”
Ruo Xi: “As long as you think so, you are.”
4th: “Do you know how hard it is to be a good emperor?..sometimes I’m more strict with myself than anyone else. But I’m also human. I also have my weak moments…there are many things that I can never tell anyone.”

Ruo Xi sheds a tear for 4th. I love this scene because 4th shares his insecurities with Ruo Xi. Being emperor isn’t as easy of a task as you’d think. It’s not just having tons of wives and ordering around your underlings. It’s difficult commanding an entire country and keeping your subordinates in check. Ruo Xi and 4th drink together.

4th tells Ruo Xi he has to go back to the Empress now. Ruo Xi is clearly unhappy. Ok, you may think it sucks that Ruo Xi has to put up with this, and it DOES, but you also have to remember that all the other wives have to put up with this too. 4th can’t just spend every moment with Ruo Xi and neglect his other wives, let alone his EMPRESS. Plus I actually like the empress a lot because she’s really kind and dotes on Ruo Xi.
Later on the Empress comes to visit Ruo Xi and tells her about the time when 4th stood in the rain for her. (I believe it was episode 21.) She says that she wants Ruo Xi to feel better.

“Maybe, only the cold rain could numb the pain in his heart.”

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 28

Happy meeting with the 8th bro group! 10th, 9th, and 14th laugh merrily together as they wish 8th’s well-being. Suddenly the mood turns sour when 8th hears his son setting off firecrackers. He orders a eunuch to stop his son, in case 4th somehow hears about the firecrackers going off. 9th says that 8th shouldn’t worry about setting off firecrackers in his own home. 10th and 8th try to silence 9th, but 9th insists on going on about how the former emperor didn’t even consider 8th as his son when he died. 8th interrupts 9th, telling him not to say anything else. 14th cautiously says that 4th may deal with 8th’s group again once he gets the chance.

14th tells the brothers about what his mom told 4th. 10th and 9th laugh happily at Concubine De’s victory over 4th. You can’t help but love how innocently happy they are at their little victory. I feel bad for 8th’s group because I know what’s gonna happen in the end. AUGH!!! 8th silences 9th and 10th’s laughter. He reminds them that 4th already tore apart one man who spread the rumors, which means that 4th knows about 8th’s group.

“He’s deep in his thinking and plots, never leaving a trace after executing his plan. Maybe, he’s already planned something and is executing it in the dark.”

9th is still overconfident. He says that there are 2 possibilities: Either 4th has compassion on them, to which 10th snorts and says “Stop dreaming.” ROFL. Or, 8th’s group still has power, so 4th won’t directly confront them. 9th confidently asks 8th why he’s given up. 8th ominously says that just like Ruo Xi predicted, 4th is his true enemy.

8th urgently tells Ruo Xi that Ruo Lan wants to see her. Ruo Lan is on her death bed. :’( Yeah, by now you should know that everyone in BBJX is dying off one by one…
Ruo Xi visits 8th’s estate. Qiao Hui is already turning on the waterworks when Ruo Xi arrives. Ruo Xi starts to cry, and 8th just has this sad resigned look on his face. He tells Ruo Xi not to cry, and to go in to see Ruo Lan. Ruo Xi holds back her tears, and looks back at 8th, as though for reassurance. 8th sadly turns and walks away.

And now for a super long conversation with Ruo Lan/Ruo Xi. Ruo Lan tells Ruo Xi about her dream of her mom and her lover.

Ruo Xi waits outside for Ruo Lan to wake up again. Qiao Hui tries to have Ruo Xi eat some food. 14th and 10th come to visit Ruo Xi. 10th informs her that he’s going to Mongolia for at least a year. Ruo Xi asks why, but then she realizes it’s because of 4th’s order. 14th asks how Ruo Xi has been, to which she just nods in reply.

“If he wants you, he should give you a title already. If he doesn’t want you, then he should release you from the palace. But now what are you? Let’s say your a palace maid, but even the palace eunuch has to bow his head to you..”

In true 14th confrontational style, 14th wonders what Ruo Xi is thinking. 4th’s not giving her a title doesn’t make sense to him. 10th hands over the soup to Ruo Xi, to get her to eat some more. She only takes a few sips. 14th and 10th look at each other worriedly.
14th says that 9th was sent to Tibet and 10th is going to Mongolia, so he’ll probably be the next one to be sent somewhere. Both 10th and 14th ask Ruo Xi if she ever wants to leave the palace.

“14th brother, this isn’t something she can decide freely. Not just her, but we also can’t do anything freely anymore.”

HMM I also wonder what Ruo Xi thinks. She’s always wanted to escape the palace life, but now that 4th is emperor, she wants to stay by his side even if it means being in the restrictive palace.

Ruo Xi: “I don’t know. There are times I wanted to, sometimes, I don’t want to.”
14th: “I think it’s because of HIM.” (aka 4th)

Ruo Xi quickly gets up to go visit Ruo Lan when she finds out Ruo Lan is awake. 14th stops her and asks if she remembers what he said to her a few years ago. Ruo Xi doesn’t seem to remember, so 14th lets her go on.

Ruo Lan gets into her final outfit–her riding outfit. She collapses and rests on Ruo Xi, reminiscing about her deceased lover.

Ruo Xi quickly goes to visit 8th. She kneels right when she gets in the room, and asks him to divorce Ruo Lan. WHAT? 14th and 10th look shocked because divorce is no light issue. 8th reservedly asks if this is Ruo Lan’s decision. Ruo Xi begs 8th to grant the divorce, because Ruo Lan doesn’t want to be married in the afterlife.

“You must’ve known that my sister’s heart was never by your side…I beg you to let my sister be free so she can be at ease to find her lover.”

AND 8TH, OMGGGGGGGGGGG. HE DOES THIS LITTLE HALF SMILE/SMIRK THAT’S SO SAD. AUGH AUGH AUGH AUGH. 8TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10th tells Ruo Xi that if the emperor doesn’t agree to the divorce, 8th will be punished. Ming Yu pops in to say that 8th doesn’t have to do anything to get punished anyway. (because 4th always finds fault in 8th no matter what he does) Ming Hui urges 8th to grant the divorce.

AUGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! This whole time 8th hasn’t said anything. He gets up and writes the divorce letter. OMGGGGG. You can tell 8th’s heart is getting ripped out, but he remains composed. After finishing the letter, he throws down the calligraphy brush. He stamps the letter with his seal. 8th tosses aside the seal and walks out of the room.

“My whole life, I hoped to be your sister’s rival, didn’t realize she never even tried…I actually spent my life fighting with someone from my imagination. I don’t want to fight with her even after death.”

Ruo Xi reads the letter to Ruo Lan. Ruo Lan is glad that she can finally be free from her familial ties. She talks out loud to her deceased lover, reaches out her hand, and dies. Ruo Xi folds the letter and places it in Ruo Lan’s hand.

It’s night time. 8th is standing outside, crying silently. I remain a fan of Ming Yu:

“Your heart is hurting. My heart is also hurting like yours. I know my place in your heart isn’t the same as Ruo Lan. But to my prince, I will always be true to you, never forsake you. If you want to cry, I’ll cry with you. If you’re in pain, I’ll also be in pain with you. You’re never alone.”

IS THIS NOT ONE OF THE MOST QUOTE-WORTHY SCENES EVER? During Ming Yu’s little speech, you hear 8th suppressing his cries as he begins to tear up even more. He turns to look at her, with tears running down his cheeks and this look of UTTER SORROW. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG. He cries on Ming Yu’s shoulder.
Ming Yu’s voice starts to waver as she tears up. She pats him on the back as she says..

“8th prince, lay all the burdens down.”

OK. IS THIS NOT ONE OF THE SADDEST MOST PERFECT SCENES EVER!?!?!?!?? When 8th turns to look at Ming Yu, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. KEVIN CHENG IS SUPERB AT ANGSTING. FAVORITE SCENE OF THIS EPISODE! I’LL RANT MORE ABOUT IT LATER!

Ruo Xi is mad that 4th won’t let her go back home for Ruo Lan’s funeral ceremony. 4th is rather possessive, but his fears are rational.

“I’m scared that once you leave, you won’t ever come back…I’m afraid that once you return to the home you dream of, your heart will never return here.

4th visits Ruo Xi at night. He touches her face and says, “I want you.” Apparently, he’s not here just to rest this time! Ruo Xi looks down uncomfortably.

“I will wait until your heart is willing.”

And so, 4th promptly decides to have “the talk”–”What do I have to do so you won’t resist me?”
He says that he wants Ruo Xi to have children for him, so she can be happy with them like she is with Cheng Huan.

“I resist because I know everyone’s endings.”

Ruo Xi makes an outrageous request–she wants to be empress.

“I cannot hurt her.”

Ruo Xi makes another request–she doesn’t want 4th to see Nian Fei anymore. (a concubine) 4th asks why she needs to make it so hard for him. Ruo Xi asks 4th what he’s gonna promise her then.

“Now I own the entire world, but all this means nothing without you. What I can give you is my heart.”

4th explains that he hasn’t given Ruo Xi a title because this way, he can see her everyday. In a gesture of acceptance, Ruo Xi lets down her hair.
OK OK. SO I WAS WATCHING THIS ON VIKI…AND RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT, SOMEONE COMMENTS “BOW CHI KI WOW WOW”. ROFL. THIS IS WHY YOU WATCH DRAMAS ON VIKI EVERYONE!

Ruo Xi and 13th talk while watching the kids play. 13th mentions that he heard Ruo Xi is troubled that 14th was sent to guard tombs. 13th says it’s actually not that bad, and that 4th doesn’t want Ruo Xi to know about the princes’ issues. 4th doesn’t want Ruo Xi to be worried about the princes. 13th says that since they’re all brothers, the worst that can happen is house arrest. (13th clearly has no idea what the other princes are in for.) He goes on to say that 14th is outspoken and Concubine De is an obstacle for 4th.

“Ruo Xi, there are some things you can do nothing about. Just let go.”

In court, 4th’s officials inform him that they can wait no longer to grant Concubine De the title of Empress Dowager. Rumors are spreading that she doesn’t accept 4th as emperor.

BBJX Episode 34-35

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 34

Ruo Xi finally leaves the palace and enters 14th’s household. She and Qiao Hui notice that the household is nicely decorated for the wedding, but there don’t seem to be any celebrations or “Xi” signs. (this is a special Chinese character that’s for weddings) Qiao Hui comments that she shouldn’t have been so quick to praise 14th. Right then 14th enters and overhears Qiao Hui’s words. He helps Ruo Xi sit down at the table. 14th clarifies that the emperor ordered them not to have a large wedding ceremony or have the word Xi around the house. Ruo Xi asks why the house is decorated if the Emperor ordered him not to. 14th replies that he didn’t want Ruo Xi to think it was gloomy, so he just decorated it simply for her. Ruo Xi gently tells him not to fight with the emperor, but 14th cutely says that there’s nothing to be afraid of when he has the past emperor’s decree.

Back at the palace, 4th chuckles over a secret report from a spy in 14th’s estate. It says that Ruo Xi didn’t wait for 14th’s other wives to finish eating at meals. 4th sounds like a proud parent as he talks about how strong-headed Ruo Xi is. He offhandedly mentions that there’s no way she has feelings for 14th. LOL, 4th!

Ruo Xi lives her days in peace and relaxation in 14th’s household. It’s the first time she can finally let go of her worries and just live quietly, like she’s always wanted. But her love for 4th is still as strong as ever, if not stronger. While she drinks tea outside, Ruo Xi imagines 4th next to her. She thinks to herself,

“In my heart, there’s only him and me left…I selfishly put everyone else aside and forget them. All that’s left behind is everything he and I shared. For the first time, no one can bother us. The first time where I don’t have any worries and can start to love him again.”

Meanwhile 4th goes in Ruo Xi’s old quarters and reminisces about all the happy times they shared there together. He sadly holds his cherished magnolia teacup as he sits there all alone, no longer with Ruo Xi by his side.

14th intensely practices his swordsmanship while one of his wife plays the zither. Ruo Xi and Qiao Hui watch him without him knowing. His wife plays the song over and over, faster and faster, as 14th does his super cool moves. Eventually a string on the zither breaks, interrupting 14th’s momentum. He doesn’t blame his wife, and instead orders whoever’s watching in secret to come out.
Ruo Xi and Qiao Hui appear, and 14th tells her she should just watch out in the open rather than standing off to the side. Ruo Xi offers him a handkerchief. Instead of taking it, 14th cutely leans his face forward. Ruo Xi only smiles to herself and obliges, patting his face with the handkerchief while 14th grins like a little kid. Ruo Xi advises him to stay warm since it’s the wintertime. 14th takes her hand and asks who’s colder. Ruo Xi admits that she’s colder than he is. The two of them head indoors, hand in hand.
SO CUTEEEE.

Things are not so happy over with 4th…because he receives the secret spy report informing him about Ruo Xi and 14th’s good relationship. 4th is shaken by the news and assumes that they’re in a husband-wife relationship, not just a platonic one. 13th quickly advises 4th that they’re really NOT in a relationship. 4th isn’t convinced at all, saying that with two people under one roof at night, what else could they be talking about? OMGGGGGGGGGGGG 4TH, SERIOUSLY? 13th hits it right on the nail when he asks if 4th doesn’t even trust Ruo Xi. 4th throws a fit and orders that he will no longer read 14th’s letters or receive the secret reports.

At night time, a very drunk 14th comes stumbling into Ruo Xi’s room. He pours out his frustration and sorrow over losing the throne and having to witness the other princes’ suffering:

“I know I shouldn’t think this way, but I don’t feel it’s fair. If Imperial Father did give me the throne back then, today, the person in control of the country would be me. The endings of a few of my brothers definitely wouldn’t turn out this way.”

While 14th talks, Ruo Xi calmly pours tea and sits down to listen to him. She quietly tells him that the emperor’s decision wasn’t made on the spur of the moment. 14th agrees and takes a few more drinks.

Ruo Xi gives him the SADDEST LOOK EVER as he wistfully begins to recite a poem. Just to make it even sadder, the poem is about honor and bravery. OMGGGG. 14th lays down to cry himself to sleep. He asks “What did I do wrong? Why? What did I do wrong in the end?” Ruo Xi can only continue to sit there and look forward as she listens to 14th’s painful words. She covers him with a blanket as he cries tiredly. She turns away as she sheds a tear and quietly whispers “I’m sorry”.

Ruo Xi reminisces about the old days when she, Ming Hui, and Ming Yu used to be energetic and well. She dozes off while still sitting at the table. Qiao Hui tells her to lay down instead, but Ruo Xi barely takes two steps before she collapses on the ground.

14th angrily yells at the doctor to go away, and orders his servants to go find another doctor. He assures Ruo Xi that he’ll definitely find her an even better doctor. Ruo Xi tells him that all the doctors have already said it’s almost the end of the rope for her. 14th says that it’s just that they have limited knowledge, this can’t be the end! (When he said this, I thought of how much more advanced doctors’ knowledge is in Ruo Xi’s REAL modern time…kinda ironic that 14th mentioned that)
Ruo Xi slips into unconsciousness. She imagines that she’s at the Forbidden City. But she can’t hug 4th even though he’s right before her eyes. Ruo Xi wakes up and decides to write a letter to 4th.

14th tries to give Ruo Xi the best last days he can. He gets her her favorite food and music teacher to try to cheer her up. The look on Ruo Xi’s face isn’t super excited, probably because she knows what a blow her next request will be to 14th…she hands him a letter addressed to the emperor. She asks him to pass it on to the emperor. 14th’s look turns serious, and he reaches to take the letter. But Ruo Xi grabs his hand, and implores him to rush quickly. OMG THE LOOK OF HOPE IN HER EYES!!!!! She hopefully says that the emperor will be able to read the letter a couple days after it’s delivered. You can tell that Ruo Xi wants to see 4th so badly, and she’s hinging all her hope on this letter.

14th puts on a warm smile, clasps Ruo Xi’s hand, and reassures her that he’ll deliver the letter right away. He walks away, no longer with a smile on his face. AUGHHH it’s so sad because you know he’ll do anything for Ruo Xi, but it still hurts to have to deliver her letter to another man. Ruo Xi looks after him a bit sadly as he walks away.
As 14th prepares to go to court, he notices that Ruo Xi’s writing is really similar to the emperor’s. He reasons that it wouldn’t be good if other people noticed it, so he decides to put her letter in a new envelope just in case. 4th receives the letter but doesn’t read it because he thinks it’ll be a waste of time reading something from 14th.

Ruo Xi continues to dress up nicely in hopes of 4th’s visit. Ruo Xi waits all day for 4th, even into the night, but he still doesn’t come yet. She begins to cry and imagines the worst:

“He doesn’t want to meet me, doens’t want to forgive me. He must really hate me so much to refuse to see me this last time…He must not even hate me at all. He just feels unconcerned and doesn’t care.”

Qiao Hui comforts Ruo Xi and confidently says that 4th will definitely come. Ruo Xi gives her this heartbreaking look of hope and asks if he’ll really come. This is sad because you know that Ruo Xi wants to hold onto that one bit of hope that maybe 4th really will come.

Ruo Xi entrusts Qiao Hui with her last wishes. She gives her Yu Tan’s letter and a letter for 13th. She also confides in Qiao Hui about the truth of Lu Wu’s death.

At the palace, 4th tiredly works through the night. He dozes off and dreams that Ruo Xi is right before his eyes. He wakes up right when he hugs her. HINT HINT, IT’S A PREMONITION!

Ruo Xi gets ready again in her finest outfit. She’s even weaker than before, and Qiao Hui knows that Ruo Xi is even closer to the end of the rope. Ruo Xi rests against Qiao Hui while waiting again for 4th. 14th comes to visit Ruo Xi. He strokes her cheek…and Ruo Xi murmers “4th prince”. OUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. THAT HAS TO HURT!!! 14th recovers quickly and suggests that Ruo Xi go outside to look at the flower blossoms and listen to her favorite music teacher.

Ruo Xi sits in 14th’s arms as she gazes at the flower blossoms. She holds a flower in her hand as she barely holds onto what’s left of her life. Ruo Xi comments that the flowers are beautiful. 14th replies that they’ll both come here again to see them next year. AUGH AUGH AUGH!!!!!!!!! Both of them know it’s wishful thinking, which just makes it even sadder.

Ruo Xi asks 14th to promise to fulfill her last request: she wants to be cremated. 14th is shocked that she wants to be cremated, so Ruo Xi explains why…

“I’ve always wanted to be free, but was stuck in the Forbidden City for life. After I die, I don’t want to be held back anymore. I want to be like the wind. Isn’t that more lovely? Being buried in the ground, what’s so great?…”

14th agrees to her request as he sheds a tear. Ruo Xi leans her head on 14th’s shoulder as 14th leans his head on hers. 14th wistfully asks,

“Ruo Xi, if there’s a next life, will you remember me?”

Ruo Xi replies that she wants to forget them all. (SO SAAAAAAAAAAD) She begins to cry, and we see 14th’s tears run down her face. Qiao Hui cries from a distance as Ruo Xi gives 14th her last words.

“14th Prince, live well. Let all that’s in the past be forgotten.”

Ruo Xi breathes her last and drops the flower. Qiao Hui and 14th sob over Ruo Xi after her death.

4th receives news of Ruo Xi’s death. He throws down the letter and says, “Without my permission, you can’t die.” 13th comes in and reads the news. 4th, still in shock, desperately looks for the letter from 14th. He finally finds it and opens the envelope, only to find the letter inside with Ruo Xi’s writing. AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! IT’S TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 35 (Finale)

4th finds the letter, originally with 14th’s prince writing on the envelope. He’s stunned when he finds another envelope, this one bearing Ruo Xi’s writing. He reads the letter as he cries to himself. We hear Ruo Xi’s voice narrating the letter, and a flashback to when Ruo Xi wrote it.

“4th prince, Life is like a dream, continuously changing…But the days pass soundlessly…It’s hard to forget one’s foolish longings.
When someone told me very calmly that he wanted the throne, he already held the key to my heart. When he threw away the umbrella and endured and suffered the rain with me, I had opened the door to my heart for him. When he protected me by using his own body to block the arrow, I would never forget him in this life.
Everything that happened after that only drew me in deeper…If there is love, there is anger. If there is love, there is hate. If there is love, there is obsession. If there is love, there is longing. Since we parted, there has been nothing but hate, anger, and longing transforming into inches of memories. I don’t know if you still resent me…
…in Ruo Xi’s heart, there is no emperor, only the 4th Prince who has stolen my soul. We love, we miss, we don’t meet…Everyday, I wait for your arrival.”

After finishing the letter, 4th stays seated on the ground as he breaks down in sobs. 13th kneels beside 4th, and the brothers clasp each other’s hands. 13th also cries for Ruo Xi, but he’s more contained than 4th is.

Little do they know that Qiao Hui and 14th are already fulfilling Ruo Xi’s last wish. They both stand before Ruo Xi’s corpse, all ready for the cremation. 14th slowly lights the wood around Ruo Xi and then turns away, probably because he can’t bear to see Ruo Xi going away for good. Qiao Hui keeps on calling out “Second Miss” while crying the whole time. What REALLY gets me is when 14th longingly looks back one last time, almost like he’s hoping that Ruo Xi will miraculously spring back to life.

4th visits 14th’s estate to see Ruo Xi. 14th has been drinking away his sorrows, all the while holding the box that contains Ruo Xi’s ashes. When he hears that 4th came, he says out loud, “Ruo Xi, he finally came.”
4th & 13th enter the room and look in disbelief at Ruo Xi’s altar. Suddenly 13th realizes that there’s no coffin. 4th freaks out and hopefully says that maybe Ruo Xi isn’t really dead, she’s just pretending. He calls out to 14th, who stumbles out holding Ruo Xi’s ashes.
13th asks where Ruo Xi is, and 14th replies that she’s right here–he cremated her. 13th takes a step back in shock, and 4th charges forward while screaming that he’ll kill 14th. 13th keeps 4th away from 14th.

14th replies with equal ferocity at 4th, asking why he only came at this time. 4th charges at 14th again, and 13th breaks them apart. 13th explains why 4th didn’t end up with the letter. 14th points out that even if he didn’t get the letter, 4th’s spies could’ve informed him. 13th says that 4th didn’t want to hear any more news of them after the whole “intimacy” between 14th/Ruo Xi.
14th realizes that he too was partly at fault. He says that that one day (in ep 34) he did have Ruo Xi show a few affectionate gestures toward him to get rid of the spies. IMO, who can blame him…no one wants to be spied on in their own household.

“It was only because my heart was hurt and suffocating, and I wanted to anger you. But I found out that I really do like speaking with Ruo Xi. It was like returning to the past…”

14th holds the box and tells Ruo Xi that he didn’t mean for this to happen.

14th reveals that cremation was her wish. He can barely say why she wants to be cremated since he’s crying so much. 4th tries to take the box of ashes, but 14th stops him and says that she’s his wife. 4th replies that he never put her name on the records and they didn’t have a marriage ceremony.
14th tells him not to go so far in his bullying. 4th yells back that it IS to bully him. 13th quietly tells 14th to let it go, because he believes Ruo Xi is willing to go with 4th. Qiao Hui also speaks up and affirms that it’s Ruo Xi’s wish. 4th leaves with the ashes, leaving behind 13th and 14th.
13th tells 14th that part of Ruo Xi’s troubles were for the sake of 14th himself. He asks 14th not to make it difficult for her.

Qiao Hui gives Ruo Xi’s belongings to 4th. 4th breaks down in tears as he goes through all of the memories attached to Ruo Xi’s keepsakes–the magnolia hair pin, the perfume bottle (is that what it is?) with the dogs painted on it, the arrow.
Qiao Hui also carries out Ruo Xi’s wishes by passing on her words to 13th. 13th agrees to do as Ruo Xi wished and agrees to let Qiao Hui serve his daughter.

Afterward, 4th remains desolate in his palace. 13th tries to make 4th wake up and get it together, but 4th just sits there holding Ruo Xi’s ashes.

Time for an epic visit from 8th. 13th explains why Ruo Xi was cremated. 4th tells him to go, but 8th isn’t having it. He simply laughs and says some of the most epic lines ever…

“Back then I gave up on Ruo Xi because of power, abandoned the vows we made to never leave each other. Now imperial brother, for the Qing Empire, and the past grievances has also given up the chance to be together forever. You’re the same as me. The things you once had are all gone in the end. With Ruo Xi, you’re the same as me. A failure. “

In a whisper, 4th tells 8th to go. He attempts to use his death glare and his emperor status on 8th. 8th just laughs in reply and delivers a great comeback before he leaves.

“Correct, you’re the superior emperor. But I am still me after all.”

This was one of my favorite scenes because 8th was just awesome. I am a renewed 8th fan.

4th and 13th finally officially say goodbye to Ruo Xi by throwing her ashes in the mountains. 13th comments that maybe Ruo Xi will be taken to the future world. Later on we see 4th thinking about 13th’s words…he reveals that maybe Ruo Xi was from the future. (I thought we already established this when she left the Forbidden City..)
FINALLY connecting the dots, 4th recalls all the times when Ruo Xi said some wacky stuff that point to her being a time traveler. He says he hopes she can return to her own time period.

So of course, we see Ruo Xi waking up in the future/present. After she recovers, Ruo Xi does an internet search to find out what happened after she died. I thought it was interesting that she basically does this search in the order of importance of the princes.
First up is 9th prince since he’s not that important to Ruo Xi. 13th visits 9th in solitary confinement. He delivers Yu Tan’s last letter and some poison. 9th read the words that Yu Tan has no hate. He begins tearing up and asks in despair,

“Why is it not hate? Why?”

Omg. At this point I really regretted that 9th did not have a bigger part in the drama. This scene was short but chilling.
9th takes the poison, and in his last moments, he thinks of Ruo Xi…

“Rou Xi, you deserve to be 4th’s woman. No, you’re more cruel than he is…you won’t let me die in peace, making me feel regret and sadness.”

Back in the present, Ruo Xi smirks ever so slightly.

Ruo Xi searches 10th next. Ming Yu is pregnant. 10th is angry at 4th but still very optimistic. 10th and Ming Yu (aside from 14th) have the happiest ending in BBJX. They are still a loving couple, all thanks to Ruo Xi’s help.

Next, to 14th!!!!! 14th and 13th relax over tea and a game of chess. 13th comments that 14th seems to be at such ease. 14th agrees and says that being imprisoned in his mom’s former palace has helped him a lot. Now he lives without worry. I think it’s cute that he mentions that there’s always 13th bro to play chess with and talk with. I love the 14th/13th bromance. They are so cute together. :3
13th observes that maybe 14th is the happiest prince out of all the brothers. 14th agrees..

“Now that I think about it, the throne that I spent half my life fighting for, doesn’t compare to these comfortable days.”

Now 8th. 13th delivers the poison to 8th and assures him that his son will be fine. 8th thanks 13th and requests that he be buried near or with Ming Hui’s ashes.

“In this life, I cannot repay back all that 13th brother has done for me. “

The two brothers bow to one another (LOVE THIS PART) before 13th departs. I love this sign of mutual respect and brotherhood. Although they were on separate sides, and 8th’s plan implicated 13th, they are still on relatively good terms. They are the ultimate example of forgive and forget.
Well just to ruin that wonderful part, the rest of the scene is horrible. 8th thanks Ruo Xi before he drinks the poison. REALLY what ruined this scene was the upbeat music that played while 8th died. WHAT THE HECK!??!? I get that he’s eager to reunite with Ming Hui, but that music DID NOT go well with the scene at all.

Down to the final two. 13th lies on his deathbed and gives his last words to Cheng Huan, Qiao Hui, and 4th. He mentions that no one forgot Ruo Xi after she died. REALLY, 13th? You’re going to bring up Ruo Xi NOW? And then he says that he’ll see 4th in the next life. *shakes head* how many references to the “next life” must there be in BBJX…
4th silently remains by 13th’s side, and doesn’t cry out loud when 13th breathes his last breath.

Finally, 4th. After 13th’s death, 4th overlooks the Forbidden City, all alone.

“They’ve all left. There’s only me.”

I love this scene because it connected to the scene when 4th overlooked the Forbidden City when he first became emperor. Instead of 4th basking in his power (like he did in the first scene), he now has to face all the problems of ruling his empire..alone.

Now fully grounded in the present day, Ruo Xi, or should I say Zhang Xiao, strolls along in the city. She narrates that she couldn’t find anything about Mertai Ruo Xi in the historical records. She thinks that it’s almost as though Ruo Xi never existed, and questions whether everything that happened is just a dream. A flier for a Qing Dynasty museum exhibit catches her eye. PURELY coincidental, you know. She decides to venture in and take a look.
It’s almost like she’s visiting her past as she looks at all of the ancient artifacts that she once knew so well. She stops to gaze at a painting of the emperor and the princes. It was of that particular summer day when Ruo Xi served everyone desserts. She notices a palace maid (*cough* HER) wearing a magnolia hairpin and the special bracelet from 8th. She shed a tear as she reaffirms that she really did exist.

And now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for…we see a certain someone come walking into the museum. Zhang Xiao seems to hear his footsteps and she turns around to look. The guy also turns around…and SURPRISE SURPRISE, it’s none other than our 4th, except a reincarnated modern version that has a full head of hair.
Zhang Xiao continues to shed more tears in the usual Ruo Xi style as she stares at him in disbelief. He walks over and asks her if they know each other. When she doesn’t reply and just stands there tearing up, he awkwardly checks his pockets to see if he has a tissue for her. He doesn’t, so he walks away.
As he’s just about to walk out of the museum, Zhang Xiao takes off her glasses so that all she can see is the blur of modern 4th’s back. The camera focuses on the painting behind Zhang Xiao.
Overall
There’s still so much to say about BBJX even after it’s over. It’s been a few months since I last watched ep 35 but it still leaves me with this hollow sort of feeling. When it ends you find yourself wondering…is it really over? How can this even be considered the ending when this is just the start of the “next life” that the characters have always been referring to?
Anyway, I wasn’t quite satisfied by this ending episode..not because of the open-ended ending, but because I feel like they rushed way too much. They crammed all of these bits and pieces into the ending but hardly gave enough time to making these ending pieces complete. Scenes that were supposed to be a lot more important, and focused on very MAJOR CHARACTERS just fell short for me. The deaths of 8th, 13th, and 4th didn’t have the huge emotional impact I thought they would. You know something is wrong when the death of 9th was more emotionally charged than the deaths of all the other major princes.
Although I don’t quite agree with Ruo Xi going back to the present, I think they pulled off the very last scene quite well. One SUPER SMART commenter commented that Zhang Xiao taking off her glasses signifies her desire to see the past 4th prince, not the current reincarnation. Great symbol right there. I also like the way they showed the painting as the final image of the drama. Although Zhang Xiao is now in the present, her heart truly remains in the past, and that painting is proof of her past self.
Ruo Xi
I believe that Ruo Xi is one of the most tragic characters in BBJX. Even though she got a new beginning, she also has to deal with all of the guilt and pain from her times in the Qing Dynasty for a whole OTHER life time. Sure she has a chance with the other modern 4th, but will she ever be able to let go of the ancient 4th? I highly doubt it. Her heart truly belonged to ancient 4th and I couldn’t imagine it any other way else.
Zhang Xiao went to the past as a modern woman and eventually became Ruo Xi. When she went back to the future, she went back as a woman of the Qing Dynasty (Ruo Xi), not as Zhang Xiao. She has a new identity aside from her former modern self and I think it would be an extreme struggle to reconcile the two. Really I wonder how she could even cope mentally with all of this change in her life. By now Zhang Xiao is a weathered soul and if I were her I’d be way too tired to handle it all.
HOWEVER…with all of the not so subtle hints towards the ‘next life,’ I’m pretty sure Zhang Xiao didn’t just time travel by accident. There was a purpose, probably to get her to go to the museum exhibit to bump into modern 4th once again. If you recall back to when Zhang Xiao was electrocuted, I remember there was a billboard nearby with an ad with a silhouette of a woman from the Qing Dynasty. (I’m pretty sure but don’t take my word for it.) Since the exhibit was still there, this shows that the time slip most likely didn’t affect the time flow of the modern world/present day.
Anyway back to Ruo Xi…I think the order in which she internet searched the princes is pretty accurate to how she felt towards each one. 9th, obviously that needs no explanation. Then 10th, who was like a sibling to her. Then 14th, the man who loved her and did his best to accept her no matter what, even if he knew she could never love him back romantically. Then 8th, her first love. Then 13th, her best friend. Lastly 4th, the man who stole her heart. It all fits in so perfectly. I really think it goes without saying that Ruo Xi cared so much about all the princes that she was willing to sacrifice everything for them. Perhaps this is her way of thanking them for all they’ve done for her. Although 4th & 8th were unwilling to give up power for her, Ruo Xi was willing to give up her happiness for them. The main tragedy is that Ruo Xi died believing that 4th still hated her. If there’s anything I would want resolved in Zhang Xiao’s new life, it’s this misunderstanding.
4th prince
For those of you that read ALL of my recaps, you might remember that I was a zealous 4th fan in the beginning of the drama. Unfortunately that passion for 4th sorta gradually died off in the second half. (Not just because of 14th’s awesomeness.) While I still love 4th I can no longer say that he’s my absolute favorite prince.
The ironic thing is that 4th, who seemed to have it all in terms of power, wealth, and love (in that he won Ruo Xi’s heart) ended up alone in the end. I felt like a lot of people cut 4th way too much slack and made lots of excuses for him whenever he did something questionable. Truth is, he had the CHOICE. He CHOSE between mercy and revenge, obsessively ‘protecting Ruo Xi’ and listening to Ruo Xi, forgiveness and hate, power and love. It was not just “Oh, well, society was like that at the time.” or “HE HAD TO DO IT!” or “IT WAS 8TH GROUP’S FAULT ANYWAYS” or “YU TAN WENT AGAINST HIS WARNINGS” or “HE’S DOING IT FOR RUO XI’S GOOD.” He made his decisions to not let off 8th’s group, and this is the outcome. While fate played a part in not letting Ruo Xi see 4th for the last time, it was partly also 4th’s doing. Maybe if he had just listened to Ruo Xi and 13th’s pleas for forgiveness, Ruo Xi would not have left the Forbidden City. I’m not trying to say that it’s entirely 4th’s fault, but 4th certainly had a part in Ruo Xi’s decision to leave the palace. Just like 8th said in this episode, 4th also couldn’t give up his lust for power and revenge for the sake of Ruo Xi. Also 4th didn’t trust Ruo Xi with 14th. In that sense, 4th was just like 8th. The only difference is that 4th won her heart completely.
All in all, 4th ended up quite the tragic character. I think the last scene where he stands alone overlooking the Forbidden City just says it all. That there was one of the most powerful scenes in this episode. It was short, and could’ve even gone without any words, but it was perfect. It shows all the weight bearing on 4th’s shoulders. It’s almost as though he realizes the sacrifices he has made…although he’s emperor, he’s now without his lover and his best friend.
8th prince
My experience with 8th is quite the opposite of 4th prince. 8th started out powerful and ended up the underdog. At first I didn’t like him that much. It wasn’t until more in the last third of the drama that I really began respecting 8th prince. Now he’s one of my favorite princes and I consider him to be the “noble 8th prince”. Also acting wise, Kevin Cheng is my favorite. His crying scenes moved me like no other. His scenes where he laughs at 4th are chilling. I love 8th!!!!!!
Although 8th was first portrayed as a ideal guy, we now know that he was not all that perfect. 8th had his faults, but the important thing is that he grew from them. He acknowledged his past mistakes and changed himself, whereas 4th refused to admit that he did anything wrong. 8th’s relationship with Ruo Xi was a stepping stone for him to eventually realize all that he has done wrong. Without Ruo Xi, maybe 8th would not have realized how precious Ming Hui was. I think 8th loved Ruo Xi both during and after their romantic relationship. Sure his feelings changed after they put an end to their relationship, but he still loved her (perhaps more as an old friend than a lover).
Too bad his dying scene was HORRIBLE. It did not serve him justice at all. The music just ruined it. AUGHHH.
14th prince!!!!!!!
14th, one of my favorite favorite princes. *sigh* First off, 14th was supposed to be a much more complex character than we give him credit for. The drama interpretation made 14th into a very happy go lucky guy. There are moments where you see some darker sides of 14th, but for the most part he remains a very pure and puppy like prince. Sure he had his fights with 4th, and there were times when he also had some underlying intentions of angering 4th since he has Ruo Xi as his wife, but overall I think 14th loved Ruo Xi with all his heart. 14th has a big heart and you could tell how eager he was to show his love for Ruo Xi. However he wasn’t overbearing in his love, instead he supported her from afar and tried his best to be accepting the way 13th is. I wish they showed more of his conflict during his marriage with Ruo Xi because we only caught a glimpse of it in the last two episodes. Obviously being the husband in name only of his unrequited love is hard to do, but because he loves her so much he’s willing to help her.
I’m pretty sure that if Ruo Xi had plainly asked 14th to get 4th to come over, he would’ve done it in a heartbeat. If that’s Ruo Xi’s true heartfelt wish, then 14th would do his best to fulfill it. However Ruo Xi thought it would be better through a letter since she didn’t know if 4th hated her or not. AUGHHHHHHHHHHHH!
But 14th rebounds quite well in his very last scene. He has finally found peace with himself and is satisfied without power and prestige. I’m pretty satisfied with 14th’s ending except I WISH THEY LET HIM KISS RUO XI ON THE FOREHEAD IN HER DYING SCENE.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 29

In full emperor garb, 4th goes to visit his mom, who’s on her deathbed. But instead of being glad to see him, she refuses to acknowledge him as her son, and tells him to get out. She’s ashamed to face her ancestors.

“In my heart, I just have one son. He is 14th prince. You are not my son. You are not my son! Get out, disappear.

4th is on the verge of tears as she spits out her insults at him. The last words he hears from his mom: “You are not my son.” That’s gotta suck. De Fei dies. (I think 4th’s visit just made her stress out even more) 4th carefully removes his Emperor’s hat and places it by her bedside. He cries silently and slowly bows before her.
Ok, so let’s just clarify a bit as to WHY De Fei is so biased against her own son. Why does she favor 14th so much? It turns out she personally raised 14th, but 4th was raised by another woman. So De Fei and 4th are basically no more than distant family members/acquaintances. It still doesn’t justify why she hates 4th so much, but she did have a motive in the beginning.

14th, always a step too late, arrives at his mother’s room. He’s devastated to find her dead. AUGHHH 14TH ANGST! He stands before his mom, with his shoulders slumped, before he drops to his knees and sobs. AHHH 14TH. :’( He looks like a little kid as he sobs his heart out. 4th promptly walks in along with a lot of eunuchs who are prepared to get her ready for the funeral. 4th calmly says that 14th should let De Fei sleep and be buried.

14th still hasn’t come to terms with his mom’s death. He needs more time to process it before they perform the burial. 14th refuses to let the eunuchs begin the burial, yelling at them to get out. The eunuchs obey 4th’s orders and attempt to approach De Fei’s bed, but he pushes them away.
4th walks up to 14th, telling him that she’s already left this world. 14th is still in denial. He grips 4th’s robe..

“Nobody is to touch my mother, especially you!”

Outside the house, we see Ruo Xi watching from afar. The eunuchs start yelling 14th’s name and call for a doctor. (It’s implied that 14th fainted.)

“Mothers and sons, who is right and who is wrong, comes an ending where all three are hurt.”

Ruo Xi enters 14th’s room. 14th is laying in bed, still desolate over his mom’s death. Ruo Xi tells him to take his medicine.

“Ruo Xi. When Imperial Father died, you were there. Did he really give the throne to 4th prince?”

14th says that his mom said for sure that the emperor said he was going to hand over the throne to him. Ruo Xi says that perhaps his mom twisted the emperor’s words. But it’s certain that the emperor gave the throne to 4th.
14th fully trusts Ruo Xi, and it breaks my heart because Ruo Xi knows the truth..

“Alright. I believe you. I’ve finally put down a worry. He’ll be his emperor, and I’ll be my own unconcerned person.”

14th lays back down on his bed with a sad smile, and Ruo Xi visits an altar to pray.

“This kind of lie may be the best for the emperor and 14th prince. Ancestor, De Fei Niang Niang, I hope that you can understand and forgive me. Forgive the emperor.”

RUO XI KNOWSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AUGH AUGH AUGH!!!!!!

13th and Ruo Xi have tea together. Ruo Xi is helping Hong Li prepare a birthday gift for Cheng Huan. 13th asks why Hong Li is the one giving the gift. Ruo Xi quietly says that he’ll understand in the future. 13th doesn’t question her motives, and turns to leave.

13th: The Imperial Brother is now the emperor. It’s what I have to do…We are no longer the 4th and 13th brothers from the past. We are now ruler and government official. Facing these changes, I have to get used to it slowly.
Ruo Xi: But he doesn’t wish that you see him as the emperor.
13th: I know. But Ruo Xi, since a person has risen to that position, it doesn’t matter if he wishes it or not. he would have to face the loneliness and respect of being at the very top…Slowly, he’ll get accustomed to it. In the future, unknowingly, he’ll get used to the absolute power that his position gives him…

Ruo Xi confidently says that 4th won’t get used to it, but 13th replies that Ruo Xi is the one who needs to accept something.

“I will see him not only as my 4th brother, but as the world’s emperor. I am his subject. I will hail to him as a brother, but stay loyal to him as a subject.”

AHHH THIS NEXT LINE REALLY GETS ME. 13th shakes his head with a small smile:

“Royal brother understands everything. The one who doesn’t understand is you.”

OMGGGG. This scene was so perfect!!! And 13th’s last line “The one who doesn’t understand is you” is so powerful.

Ruo Xi talks to 13th after he leaves the court. She catches on that something is wrong, and of course 13th can’t hide anything from Ruo Xi. He says that 8th was yelled at by 4th. 8th is punished to kneel the whole night outside the temple. Ruo Xi is about to go into the court to confront 4th and beg forgiveness for 8th, but 13th stops her. He says she should let go of 8th bro. She asks if she were in the same situation, could 13th stand up for her?

“If you were in situation, if the same thing happened, will you become a stranger? Can you stay unconcerned?”

13th looks away in reply. He reminds her that she has no relation to 8th anymore, now that she’s out of his household. If she keeps on caring about 8th, it will end up hurting him in the long run.

“The us from now, is no longer the us from back then. Then he was 4th prince. Now he is the emperor.” If you really want good things for 8th brother, just let it go.”

Ruo Xi is bothered by 13th’s advice. She visits the altar to pray. 4th comes to visit. She’s been kneeling for 2 hours and hasn’t even eaten. He tells her to get up, but Ruo Xi just continues to kneel there. She recites a few proverbs, and asks him,

“Why can’t you just forget about what happened in the past?”

He simply replies, “Every action has its consequence.” and leaves quickly.

Ruo Xi is still kneeling by the altar even when it becomes nighttime. She wonders to herself how 8th can endure kneeling on the concrete at his age. 4th comes to visit Ruo Xi again. He asks if she intends on accompanying 8th. Ruo Xi continues to kneel there, so he orders her to get up.

“Now you’re being the emperor to order me?”

This scene is sad because exactly what Ruo Xi doesn’t want to happen is happening–the emperor/subject relationship is being established.

Since Ruo Xi can’t kneel, she stands in her room the entire night. Morning comes, and Ruo Xi wonders what she should do next. 4th visits her, and notices that she’s wearing the same robe she wore the night before. He concludes that she stood the whole night, and angrily throws a tray of tea on the ground. Before storming away, 4th informs her that he let 8th return home. Ruo Xi crumples to the ground after 4th leaves.
(I feel kinda bad for Ruo Xi’s maids because it feels like she falls to the ground in every single episode.)

Ruo Xi stays at Yu Tan’s house for a while. Yu Tan and Ruo Xi drink tea together. Yu Tan talks about rumors about the imperial court, but understandably, Ruo Xi doesn’t want to hear any of it.

13th and Ruo Xi banter about political matters.

“Once you’re at the top, the only place to go is down.”

The conversation inevitably turns to 4th/Ruo Xi’s relationship. 13th is here to mediate between the two. He says that ever since Ruo Xi left, 4th is always uptight. Why can’t they reconcile and get along? The whole time, Ruo Xi quietly sips her tea.

Why do you bring misery upon yourself because of love?

Ruo Xi begins to tear up, but remains silent. 13th takes Ruo Xi’s tea cup out of her hands to make his point:

Ruo Xi, allow yourself to live more freely. Some things, if you can let go, just let them go.

13th leaves, and Ruo Xi looks over at her tea cup (which is now on the table) with tears in her eyes.

A eunuch is ordered to take Ruo Xi home. At first Ruo Xi refuses to go, but gives in when the eunuch begs her to go home for his sake. Again, I feel pretty bad for the eunuch because if Ruo Xi really didn’t go, he’d be punished by 4th.

4th is happy to see Ruo Xi back, but Ruo Xi gives him the cold shoulder. I actually thought this scene was hilarious because Ruo Xi and 4th are just like a married couple. 4th is at loss at how to handle Ruo Xi’s anger, and just like a husband admitting defeat, he begs her to forgive him. ROFL.

“The emperor is also human.”

Ruo Xi eventually tells him that she memorized some of his favorite poetry. She thinks he’s like the person in the poem–he cares about the wellbeing of his people. 4th grins at this compliment, and asks when she memorized the poetry. Ruo Xi refuses, and the two of them cutely smile. They made up!

The next day, Ruo Xi serves 13th & 4th special tea and pastries. 4th’s shoulder is hurting, so Ruo Xi insists that the doctor check it. The doctor says that something heavy was leaning on his shoulder. ROFL. 4th, 13th, and Ruo Xi just stand there like they don’t know what to do with that diagnosis. The doctor leaves, and 13th and 4th crack up. Ruo Xi quickly runs out of the room in embarrassment. ROFL, I cracked up so much during this scene!!

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 30

This is definitely one of my favorite scenes because of how beautifully it’s filmed and the great little details:
8th takes a walk outside, admiring the cherry blossoms. (If I could just have a garden full of those trees..I would be happy.) He comes across a feathered toy (I don’t know the name for it) on the ground. 8th picks it up and has a flashback of young Ruo Xi, when she was playing with it happily. He smiles sadly as he holds the toy in his hand. AUGHHHHH 8TH.

Ming Hui comes and walks with 8th. She comments that thanks to Ruo Xi, 8th was able to escape 4th’s punishment. 8th agrees that it was worth knowing Ruo Xi, since she still remembers them as old friends from the past.

8th: “I would prefer that she just forgets it all. Although I’m thankful, I hope there won’t be a next time…She can help this time, but won’t be able to help a second or a third time. I just hope she can live peacefully in the palace, and stop being caught up with us brothers and the matters of the court.”
Ming Hui: “Why not just let go, and have some peace? You have me, and the children. From now on, spend more time with us. It’s better than gaining position and land.”

^I LOVEEE the part when Ming Hui says “It’s better than gaining position and land” because it shows her tapping 8th’s hand. (top right pic) Just a great little detail in this scene that makes it even better.
8th smiles sadly and puts back down the feathered toy on the grass.

8th: “At this point, even if I wanted to put it all down, it’s not that easy now.”

He smiles sadly again, and takes Ming Hui’s hand. Ming Hui pats his arm and they continue on their walk.
I love this scene because it really ties back to what I was saying about episode 29–even if they want to let go so badly, it’s really not that easy. 8th is also quite wise in his wish that Ruo Xi won’t save him again. If she does, it’ll only make things worse for her because of 4th’s hate for 8th. We all know that Ruo Xi can’t help but care about the other princes, and in doing so, she carries a heavy burden for her whole life. Some people don’t understand why Ruo Xi can’t just stop caring about the princes and just move on already. To me, it’s more like the princes are Ruo Xi’s FAMILY. She can’t just abandon her family after rising to the top.

Ming Yu visits Ming Hui after staying in Mongolia for a long time with 10th. She observes that Ming Hui seems like an entirely different person. Ming Yu vents her anger over the unfairness, etc. etc., and asks Ming Hui why she doesn’t want to fight back.
Again, I admire Ming Hui so freaking much:

“Being part of the royal family, I cannot enjoy what ordinary people cannot experience: wealth. Then of course, we also experience pain that ordinary people don’t have. Instead of crying about it everyday, why not let it go and live happily? If in the end, if life really is about to end…faced with confinement, I’ll accompany my prince to confinement..This life, we’ve fought, and smiled. What is there to regret?”

OMG Ming Hui. SHE AND 8TH JUST WANT TO BE HAPPY AND LIVE PEACEFUL LIVES. AUGH AUGH AUGH.
Ming Yu is following in Ming Hui’s footsteps; she agrees wholeheartedly…

“…This life, we have our own prince. Just that is enough.”

After visiting Ming Hui, Ming Yu talks with Ruo Xi. We don’t hear their conversation, but it’s implied that Ming Yu told Ruo Xi about 10th’s bleak situation.
Afterward, Ruo Xi goes to visit 4th. 4th seems to know what Ruo Xi’s gonna talk about, because he’s uptight and tense. Ruo Xi simply says that she talked with Ming Yu. 4th hands over a report to Ruo Xi, which talks about 10th getting imprisoned because he caused a ruckus.

“I will never pardon them.”

Ruo Xi asks 4th to be more lenient on the princes…

Ruo Xi: “8th prince has already given up the imperial throne. Why are you still unable to forgive him?
4th: “He gave up because he couldn’t not give up.”

4th worriedly opens up about all the troubles he’s facing with corruption amongst high ranking officials. He says he needs to be harsh in order to keep the officials from supporting 8th’s group. Ruo Xi is quite insightful when she points out that 4th makes sense, but is all he doing really for the sake of outwitting his enemies? (the implicit meaning–is this really his only motive? Is it not for revenge?)
4th takes Ruo Xi’s hand, and reminds her of 13th’s imprisonment and her poor health. He blames it all on 8th’s group. Ruo Xi assures 4th that it’s not 8th’s group’s fault, and that 13th holds no grudge against them either. 4th says that he doesn’t want the rest of the family to drag her into these issues. He thinks that Ming Yu doesn’t care about Ruo Xi at all.

“I can only promise you that I won’t take their lives.”

For some reason, Ruo Xi decides to visit her old laundry department quarters. The laundry girls all greet her in respect. Ruo Xi asks where Eunuch Zhang is. The laundry girls all whisper to each other, but tell her that Eunuch Zhang left the palace. Ruo Xi thinks to herself that it’s highly unlikely that he left the palace unless he messed up big time. (Eunuchs usually stay in the palace until very old age.)

Ruo Xi thinks that maybe Eunuch Wang knows something about Eunuch Zhang. She visits his house, and is puzzled to hear him crying before she knocks on the door. Turns out Ruo Xi picked the perfect day to visit–it’s Eunuch Li’s death anniversary. OMGGGGGGGG.
Ruo Xi questions Eunuch Wang, noticing that he has incense burning in front of a platter of desserts. Eunuch Wang attempts to make stuff up, but Ruo Xi notices that the desserts are all Eunuch Li’s favorites. OMGGGGGGG.
Ruo Xi’s crying scenes don’t usually affect me that much, because she always does the same single-tear thing, but this scene really got me. Points for the voice actor as well, because LSS and the voice actor really nailed this scene.

“What happened? Tell me honestly. By now, what else is there to hide? From the moment I entered the palace, I’ve been with Eunuch Li. He treated me very well. Even in the end, he tried to bring me back to our previous emperor’s side? He’s gone. Yet I don’t know anything. How can I feel at peace?”

Eunuch Wang fesses up and tells Ruo Xi the truth–Eunuch Li committed suicide.

“Why? Why? Why else? How can His majesty let him go? I’m too naive, forgetting how the mind of royalty works.”

Ruo Xi slowly walks back in the rain. We hear the rest of her conversation with Eunuch Wang. (Again, love the directing here.) She finds out that Eunuch Zhang’s tongue and hands were cut off before he got kicked out of the palace.

(top left pic) It’s nighttime. Ruo Xi worriedly sits up at night, still disturbed over all that she’s found out. 4th visits her, worried that she skipped dinner. After he leaves, Ruo Xi thinks to herself..

“I actually learned how to reply cautiously. I don’t dare light the lamp because I’m afraid he’ll see my scared expression. Back then, even though I knew he was harsh with 8th prince, I thought he still loved me, won’t ever hurt me, but now I can’t help but fear him and agonize over his every word.”

Unfortunately Ruo Xi is now experiencing the same thing 8th experienced–doubt in the one she loves.
(middle pics) 4th’s son, Hong Shi (now the 3rd prince) BLESS HIS LITTLE HEART, actually has the guts to request that 8th return to politics and help out 4th. OMGGGG, I cringed for the poor guy. And the funny part is that he goes, “I have a suggestion, I don’t know if I should say it or not..” Me: DON’T!!!!!!!!!!! He looks like one of those happy-go-lucky kids, so I felt pretty bad for him when 4th flipped out.
4th flips out and calls him an unfilial son. (HMM does 4th seem similar to Kang Xi much?) Hong Shi runs for his life. Ruo Xi overhears 3rd prince and Yu Tan talking together after 3rd prince got reprimanded.
(bottom two pics) Nighttime again! One of 4th’s concubines comes to visit him. (HMM. I wanna see all of 4th’s other wives!) She happily says that he’s finally remembered her! 4th apologizes for neglecting her, making the excuse that the war has him occupied. He tells her to pass on a message to tell Nian Ge Yao that he’ll be rewarded if he wins the war. She assures him that he’ll definitely do his best. 4th holds her hand, and she smiles happily.
ADMIT IT. YOU THOUGHT, “4TH, YOU PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

4th and 13th talk politics while Yu Tan and Ruo Xi drink tea together. 4th pointedly looks at Yu Tan while loudly telling 13th his ‘plans’. (This will be an important point later on..)
Cheng Huan runs to tell Ruo Xi that someone is being steamed. That’s right, STEAMED. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. Cheng Huan tells her that 4th ordered that all the servants must go watch the steaming. Ruo Xi frantically asks if she knows who it is, but Cheng Huan doesn’t know. Ruo Xi runs out of the house, only to be stopped by a eunuch. Again, I feel bad for the eunuch, who’s been ordered to keep Ruo Xi from leaving the house. Ruo Xi refuses to stay put, and runs outside. She sees the steaming bin, and has trouble keeping her food down. All the servants watching are throwing up. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. Ruo Xi orders the eunuch to tell her who it is. At first he refuses, but when she runs forward, he desperately yells that it’s Yu Tan. Ruo Xi faints right then and there. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

Ruo Xi wakes up in her bed, with 4th carefully tending to her. She immediately flips out at 4th, still distraught over Yu Tan’s cruel death.

“Get away. Why have you done this?…She’s my sister!!!”

4th replies that Yu Tan didn’t think of Ruo Xi as her sister, and he did what he had to do. He breaks the news that Ruo Xi is pregnant.

“I hate you.”

4th is heartbroken, but calmly says..

“If you want me to leave, then I will leave right now. But please take care of yourself and the child.”

4th tries to wipe Ruo Xi’s tears, but she pushes his hand away. He turns to leave while hearing Ruo Xi cry her heart out.

13th congratulates 4th on Ruo Xi’s pregnancy, but is shocked to find out that 4th steamed Yu Tan. 4th explains that Yu Tan was being used by 9th to get his son to fight for the position of Crown Prince. 13th wisely says that he’ll find the time to explain everything to Ruo Xi.

Ruo Xi has flashbacks of her times with Yu Tan, and thinks to herself that she wasn’t able to protect Yu Tan even with 4th’s love for her. Ruo Xi feels guilty because she promised Yu Tan to protect her. She suddenly faints and collapses, and only then do we see that she was kneeling in front of an altar. Great little detail there.
Eunuch Wang secretly delivers a letter from Yu Tan to Ruo Xi. Yu Tan’s letter has a sense of urgency, because she wrote it when she knew her time was almost up.

“I have no regrets and no complaints.”

13th visits Ruo Xi to advise her to care for her baby.

“I’ll do my best, but I can’t stop this heartache.”

13th tells Ruo Xi the truth about Yu Tan–Yu Tan was a spy for 9th, and although 4th warned her various times, Yu Tan didn’t heed his warnings. Ruo Xi slyly says that perhaps 4th allowed Yu Tan to stay in the palace because it’s better to keep your enemies close, to know their plans, rather than not knowing anything at all. She’s got a point there…
She bitterly says that while Yu Tan and Eunuch Zhang might’ve been at fault, they didn’t deserve such cruel punishments.

“In the palace, all I know now is fear, and more fear.”

Ruo Xi peeks into the court, and overhears 4th harshly reprimanding 8th and 9th. 8th and 9th meekly take his criticism and leave the court with defeated faces.

“They are all blood brothers, but he’s shaming them in front of everybody, leaving them no pride at all.”

Ruo Xi greets 8th and 9th. 9th says not to bother; she’s of high status, and she’s bowing to him? “Isn’t that just another crime I’ve committed?” ROFL. If there’s one thing I love about 8th’s group, it’s their ability to make sarcastic jabs at their misfortune.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 31

Ruo Xi takes 9th aside to ask him about Yu Tan..

“Towards Yu Tan’s death, do you feel any guilt at all?”

9th’s eyes lower a bit, but he quickly recovers himself, and harshly points out the servant-master relationship between him and Yu Tan.

9th: “What guilt are you talking about?”
Ruo Xi: “Do you mean to say Yu Tan is just a chess piece you’ve hidden in the palace for 20 years?”

9th haughtily says that it should be Yu Tan’s honor, since she’s only a lowly servant. I’d say that 9th is just as clever with his words as Ruo Xi is:

“If you want to say something for your sister, then you should go search for the Emperor. He’s the real murderer.”

We know that 9th is actually a big softie, because when he goes home, he broods over his happy memories with Yu Tan. (It’s hinted that they had a romantic relationship, not just a servant/master relationship)
He thinks to himself:

“4th, you owe me too much!”

9th talks about how ridiculous it is that 8th got punished for 10th’s doings. 8th calmly tells him to get 10th to hurry up and stop looking for trouble.
9th doesn’t want to back down:

9th: “8th brother, we can’t keep retreating! He’ll only go overboard! The one who led us brothers to fight for the throne was you. The one who is suffering now is also you! Can’t we fight properly one more time? It’s better than being forced into a corner by him!”
8th: “The dust has already settled. He is the Emperor. What he wants me to do, I will do. Whatever he wants, it’s up to him, even if it’s confinement. With things as they are, why bother doing more, only to let him find more to blame us for?…Going against him, you will only bring harm to those around you.

8th advises 9th to keep his temper in check and to stop going against the emperor.
After 8th leaves, 9th asks Ming Hui for her opinion. She advises him to follow 8th’s advice, because in the end, it’s for everyone’s own good.

9th: If we’re going to be brought down, he [the emperor] is going to suffer along with us.
Ming Hui: “We all need to hide from him [the emperor], how are we going to do that? Forget it.”

Ruo Xi is still desolate and heartbroken over Yu Tan’s death. 4th sends in Qiao Hui to wait on Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi quickly tells her to leave, because she doesn’t want her in the palace. (Ruo Xi doesn’t really say why, but I think it’s because she doesn’t want Qiao Hui to get caught up in any palace matters. After everything that happened with the eunuchs and Yu Tan, Ruo Xi doesn’t want anyone to be hurt because of her.)

“In my heart, I’ve already thought of of Madam as my elder sister, and second miss as my biological younger sister.”

Qiao Hui urges Ruo Xi to take care of herself for the sake of her baby. Ruo Xi breaks down in Qiao Hui’s arms.

Cheng Huan convinces Ruo Xi to listen to her zither playing. 4th visits, but Ruo Xi is still distant and formal. Ruo Xi says that she’d like a girl, not a boy:

“I don’t want my own children to be fighting among themselves, without regards for each other.”

BURNNNNNNNN. Things get a little awkward because that was basically an indirect insult towards 4th. Everyone except Ruo Xi is dismissed. Ruo Xi tries to excuse herself, but 4th stops her and tells her he must give her a title now that she’s pregnant. She refuses, asking him to let her out of the palace.

“I will never let you and the child leave me. Don’t even think about it! Do you only have hate for me now?”

Ruo Xi pulls out of the hug and faces him: (Love LSS’s acting here)

“How I hope that I have only hate for you. But even if I wanted to, I can’t bring myself to hate you. I’m only afraid of the palace, afraid of the emperor. Why is he so cruel? So much that I’m petrified.”

4th is heartbroken over her words, but maintains his composure:

4th: “…I will always be your 4th prince. But I am also the Emperor. There are a lot of things that I can’t help.”
Ruo Xi: “There may be a lot of things that can’t be helped. But maybe when handled by someone else, there is a different way of doing it. Yet you have always chosen the most extreme methods. You just end up hurting people around you. Why? Why are you so cruel to such an extreme?”

4th has no answer, and can only look at Ruo Xi with tormented eyes. Ruo Xi leaves him standing there with tears in his eyes.

Ruo Xi asks Cheng Huan about the song she played on the zither. Cheng Huan says that her new servant helped her choose it, and instructed her to tell Ruo Xi:

“As long as you’re willing to give up, Er Qi will follow accordingly.”

Ruo Xi wonders to herself who “Er Qi” is, and realizes it’s 14th. She understands why 4th is so paranoid and strict with the servants now. (Because the princes still have the power to plant servants in the palace)
4th sends over a list of titles for Ruo Xi to choose from. Ruo Xi sets it aside and goes for a walk..

“Qiao Hui, with a title, I will have to be tied together with this Forbidden City.”

Ming Hui has a conversation with Ruo Xi. And omg, this scene is SOOOOOOO INTENSE.

Ming Hui tells Ruo Xi about the troubles with 10th and 8th.

“Now, Wang-ye never bothers much about these issues. Whether things go up or down, he doesn’t dwell on it. Whatever the emperor commands, he will do…With things going as they are, what else is there to fight for? The Emperor has been testing us, discouraging us. 4th and the court officials always take every opportunity to find fault in 8th, making his life a living hell. Ruo Xi keeps a straight face the whole time, but it seems like it’s painful for her to hear all the details of 8th’s downfall.

“Who knows how much longer we’re able to live. We all know that the knife will come down one day. But we still have to worry when it will. I was still terrified in the past, but now, I feel that the sooner it is, the better.”

Ming Hui finally gets to the point. She mentions the time when 8th’s plan ended up with 13th’s imprisonment. She questions why 8th targeted 4th back then, when they were still on good terms with each other. And why didn’t 8th target other princes, like 3rd prince? Ruo Xi still doesn’t understand yet.
Ming Hui gets closer and closer to Ruo Xi..

…back then someone, not just once, especial warned Wang’ye to be careful of the emperor, and even listed a whole list names. Although Wang’ye was dubious, but to be on the safe side, he decided to do something about it. If that’s the case, the emperor seems to be hating the wrong person…the mastermind is someone else.

Ruo Xi is startled by the implications of her words, and steps back. All she can say is “Someone else” over and over. Ming Hui wonders which will be stronger: 4th’s sadness or anger. Ruo Xi is so grief-stricken that she falls to the ground in tears.

“You came out of Bei’le’s estate, and received so much from Wang’ Ye over the years, he wants you to cute off all ties with us, how can it be that easy? Right, 9th brother wants me to tell you, if we have to suffer pain, we’ll give you at least 50% of it!

I have to admit, Ming Hui completely owned that scene.
Back in her room, Ruo Xi is ridden with guilt.

“Qiao Hui, it was me. It turns out everything was because of me. I was the mastermind…I’ve never thought that his [8th's] ending was caused by me. If not for me, he wouldn’t have gone against 4th, and maybe 13th wouldn’t have been confined….”

13th comes to visit Ruo Xi. WORST TIMING EVER. :’( Ruo Xi is still having trouble coming to terms with what was probably the biggest revelation in her life.

“It’s not you who have done wrong, it’s me. It’s me!
(In her mind:) Because of me, you suffered for 10 years, ending up with such ill health.

13th asks if 9th knows about Ruo Xi’s past with 8th. She says that 9th, 10th, and 14th all must know already. He cautiously asks how far she want with 8th. Ruo Xi only asks “Is that important?”. Definitely not the right answer, because it only creates a misunderstanding.

Ruo Xi suddenly collapses. She whispers, “My baby” as blood begins to pool on the ground. 4th rushes in, and is shocked to see Ruo Xi having a miscarriage. The doctor tells 4th he can only do his best to save the mother, but not the baby.

In court, 4th angrily throws a report at 8th and blames Ming Hui for everything. 8th takes a deep breath, gets on his knees, and asks for his punishment. 4th orders 8th to divorce Ming Hui within 3 days. WHAT THE HECK, 4TH? 8th is just as shocked as we are, and finally speaks out:

“I have always been giving into you, but why are you still forcing me into a corner?”

4th says that if he divorces Ming Hui, he can save his life.

“Ming Hui’s crimes, I will take upon myself. As a man, I will not let my wife suffer! To have to divorce my wife, I’d rather die than obey.”

4th reminds him that he can execute 8th’s entire family for refusing to obey. 8th only smiles.. (OMGGGGGGGGGGGG 8THHHHHHHHHHHH)

“Ever since you’ve become the emperor, my whole family has already become offerings. You can do whatever you want. I have no more inspirations or goals. I just want to grow old with Ming Hui. If this is so hard to grant, you might as well kill us.”

4th orders 8th to kneel outside the palace, and 8th only laughs in response. Heh, probably NOT the response 4th wanted.

8th kneels in the rain, with fists clenched and his hat on the ground by his side. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG.
13th, bless his heart, appeals for 8th:

13th: “..if he continues kneeling like this, he’ll lose his legs.”
4th: “Have you forgotten how he treated you back then? Didn’t he also give you your leg problems?

4th tells 13th the news that Ruo Xi can no longer have children. 13th can only look at 4th in silence as 4th orders that 8th be sent home. But there’s a catch–8th has to WALK the entire way home. Now, if you’ve ever been to the Forbidden City, you know how freaking huge that place is. It’s no walk in the park, that’s for sure. And 8th has to walk the whole way home. :’(((((((((((

I really started tearing up in this scene. 8th slowly limps home while holding his hat, which is now ruined by the rain. 8th finally reaches home at nighttime. Ming Hui is waiting outside for him.
8th smiles tiredly, but suddenly trips and falls in a puddle. AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHH 8THHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Ming Hui cries by 8th’s bedside. 8th reassuringly holds her hand, and doesn’t blame her for his punishment. Ming Hui doesn’t tell him what she really told Ruo Xi.

“You didn’t do anything, how would the Emperor be able to fault you?”

8th pats her hand (the same way Ming Hui patted his hand before) before going to sleep. Ming Hui puts his hand back under his blanket before leaving his bedside. But wait! The edict ordering their divorce falls from 8th’s robe, so Ming Hui finds out about it. :’(((((((((((
Ruo Xi drifts in and out of consciousness. When she finally wakes up for a long time, she finds out that 4th has been attending to her night and day

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 32

If you couldn’t handle the last few episodes, then I would advise you not to watch episode 32. It is the saddest episode yet. Basically, if you don’t want to see 4th, 8th, Ruo Xi, and Ming Hui suffer then don’t watch this episode.

Ruo Xi recovers from her coma. 4th comes to see her fully awake for the first time. The two of them cry while clinging to each other in relief. With a weak voice, Ruo Xi apologizes..

Ruo Xi: I’m sorry, I know you were looking forward to this child.
4th: It’s ok. Your health is the most important.
Ruo Xi: The heavens don’t want our child to come to this world to suffer. So they took him back.

Despite her weak condition and exhausted mental state, Ruo Xi has a smile on her face as she talks about how their child must be happy in heaven now.

Don’t blame anyone, ok? If you want to blame anyone, it would be my fault.

Too late, Ruo Xi!!! 4th averts his eyes, but Ruo Xi doesn’t seem to suspect anything when he advises her to worry about herself, not other people. He promises to take her on a walk after she recovers, and sheds a tear as she cries against him once again.

And for the BEAUTIFUL walk scene. LOVEEE it. It seems like the two of them are back to their cute selves, as they admire the plum blossoms. 4th offers Ruo Xi a flower to smell. Ruo Xi comments that the smell of the medication covers the smell of the flower. 4th says the CUTEST THING EVER:

I can smell only your fragrance.

4th leans in for a kiss, but Ruo Xi covers his mouth with her hand, playfully saying that he’s the emperor–he shouldn’t be doing such things in public! 4th is all, hey it’s my concubine and I!! Why wouldn’t I?
At the word “concubine,” Ruo Xi looks a little uncomfortable. She thinks it’s unnecessary now that she no longer has the child. On the other hand, 4th wants to give her a title ASAP no matter what.

4th: I’m only afraid of losing you.
Ruo Xi: I’m also afraid of losing you.
4th: How will you lose me?
Ruo Xi: Actually, I’m not from here. I’m Zhang Xiao. I’m not part of this time period. I’m afraid that one day, I’ll have to leave this place unwillingly. Like how I didn’t want to come here.
4th: …You want to leave?
Ruo Xi: I don’t.
4th: If you leave here voluntarily, no matter where you are, I will go find you.

Loveee that last line of 4th’s. Such a short scene, but such great stuff said. 4th dismisses Ruo Xi’s comment about her coming from a different time period as nonsense that Ruo Xi is randomly sputtering. I don’t know, maybe he thinks it’s just part of Ruo Xi’s quirkiness, since she’s always had odd ideas? I don’t really know why 4th doesn’t try to make sense of Ruo Xi’s words. Wouldn’t you at least go, “Huh? Please explain.”

We switch to 8th’s house. Ming Hui is on her knees, tearfully begging 8th to obey the edict and go through with the divorce.

“Wang’Ye, if it’s asked that I accompany you in death, I won’t even furrow my eyebrows, but now, the ones who will die are not just you, but there is also Hong Wang and the hundreds of lives in this whole household.”

Ming Hui scoots closer to 8th, still on her knees. She grabs his knee with both hands, and implores him to think of the consequences of disobedience–her family, his followers, everyone will be implicated by it. 8th tightens his grip on his tea cup, brooding silently.
Ming Hui calmly gets up to go to the desk. Just like the time when she wrote the divorce request for Ruo Lan, she now writes the letter for her very own divorce. 8th looks to the side, as though he’s trying to hold back and hide his tears. Ming Hui brings the letter and 8th’s seal to his side.

“Wang’Ye, for Hong Wang, for everyone, for my family, I beg you.”

Ming Hui bows her head and holds out the letter. 8th, still gripping the tea cup, finally sets it down on the table beside him. He reaches out with trembling hands to receive the letter from Ming Hui. 8th’s tears begin to fall as he grips the letter and his seal. OMG

8th holds back his cries as he stamps the letter with his seal. Right when the seal hits the letter, 8th closes his eyes and his tears FALL ON THE LETTER. OMGGGGGG. Ming Hui has a little sad smile on her face.
8th breaks down. AWTJAWIOGTAWWAIJEGTOAJSGHAEHJIOAEHJ!!!!!!!! Ming Hui takes the letter from him and thanks him. With nerves of steel, Ming Hui turns to walk away, still carefully composed. But 8th hugs her from behind. Ming Hui cries, but 8th doesn’t know, because she’s completely silent.

“Ming Hui! back then, I only saw your position and status, and not your deep love, causing you to be in this state now. Letting you go back, you may be able to save your life. There’s no need to be worried everyday now, or to be sacrificed.

Ming Hui visibly forces herself to put a smile on her face. Without turning around, Ming Hui slowly reaches toward 8th’s face to hold his cheek.

“Wang Ye, I understand. In my heart, you will always be here.”

Without another word, Ming Hui walks away, leaving 8th standing there. Ming Hui entrusts 8th to the care of one of the eunuchs. She bows, as the eunuch kneels on the ground and assures her he will always take care of 8th. Somehow the simple gesture of how she curtsies to the eunuch, and the eunuch’s deep loyalty, is just so heartbreaking. We see Ming Hui’s retreating silhouette, with the eunuch bowing his head as she leaves.

Ruo Xi asks 13th what 4th’s order is. 13th spills the beans about the divorce. 8th still hasn’t complied yet. (the letter hasn’t been sent yet..) Ruo Xi quickly moves to take action, instructing 13th to persuade 8th, while she persuades 4th. But 13th doesn’t move.
13th points out that 8th wouldn’t believe him. Ruo Xi has incredibly determined eyes. She decides to go with 13th to visit 8th.

Ruo Xi and 13th barge into 8th’s room. 8th is drunk and irate.

What else do you want to do? Do you plan on taking my life until you’re happy? If the king allows it, I want to.

Ruo Xi implores 8th not to divorce Ming Hui. 8th laughs bitterly, and throws the edict at Ruo Xi’s feet.

You should tell him.

Ruo Xi tells 8th to go find Ming Hui before something bad happens. She tells him to wake up and implies that 8th doesn’t understand Ming Hui’s heart. (The first time I watched this, I just wanted Ruo Xi to be quiet, but the second time through, I realized she’s simply trying to prevent anything bad from happening to Ming Hui.)

8th: I understand. Of course I understand. When everyone gave up on me, only she was there to take care of me, comfort me. When I was fighting, she always supported me. When I gave up, she also didn’t say anything. No doubt, I’m crazy, stupid and a fool. I had such a precious pearl beside me, but I still went looking for one. I’ve sworn I’ll use the left of my life to treat her well. But why are the heavens so cruel? I’ve always given way, but I’m still being cornered by the the emperor. I thought, that by being careful, I could exchange that for some peace. But I’ve just recently realized that’s impossible. My ending is settled already. But she’s different. The only thing I can do for her is to let her go.
Ruo Xi: You understand everything, but why can’t you see her heart?…She’s just afraid that you don’t want her!

At this point, 8th suddenly has an “Aha” moment. The threesome ride on horseback to find Ming Hui. (Here’s where I wondered if there were any drunk horse-riding accidents back in the day.)

The three find the house in flames. The servants tell them that Ming Hui committed suicide. 8th dashes toward the house, shouting her name. 13th and Ruo Xi hold him back. 8th sees Ming Hui inside the house and lets out the most heart-wrenching wail ever. AUGHHH.
Note that 8th doesn’t know what Ming Hui really said to Ruo Xi, nor does he know of Ruo Xi’s miscarriage.

8th: “She only came to find you to express her anguish. What harm did it do to you, to deserve such an ending? Now, are you satisfied?”

13th takes offense and defends Ruo Xi…and spills the beans that Ruo Xi can no longer bear children.

No harm done to her? Did you know that because of 8th’s words, the child in her womb is gone. She’ll never be able to have a child again!Don’t forget you still have Hong Wang. Your wife’s sacrifice is for whom? You have the answer in your heart. What should you do next? YOU HAVE THE ANSWER!

NOT THE RIGHT TIME FOR A PEP TALK, 13TH. Not the time to say “Well let’s look on the bright side of things.” I think that part was supposed to be really climatic but….13th’s little speech kinda ruined it for me.
8th sadly replies…

To drift and live without purpose. Living is worse than dying.

He falls to his knees and continues to sob.

At dawn, Ruo Xi returns home. 4th has been waiting up the whole night for them. When she enters the room, he simply tells her to go rest. No doubt, he knows where she’s been. Ruo Xi distantly tells him to go get ready for court.
4th gets up and reaches toward Ruo Xi’s cheek, but she looks away. 4th gets the message and doesn’t push any further. He tells 13th to look after her.

13th: “Ruo Xi, don’t torment yourself. 8th Fujin’s death has nothing to do with you.
Ruo Xi: “I’ve always thought to survive is hard, to seek death is easy…”
13th: “It wasn’t your fault from the beginning. It was also not 8th brother or 8th wife’s fault…can’t blame Imperial Brother.”

Ruo Xi quietly asks if she really can’t have children anymore. 13th only closes his eyes and stays silent.

“Might as well. Unless I want my child to suffer in the Forbidden City.”

Qiao Hui blames herself for all that’s happened, because she was the one who let Ming Hui see Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi is like a shell of her former self as she processes all that’s happening.

“How would you know the ending? None of you know. Right now, it’s only the second year of the emperor’s reign. I originally thought there would still be a couple years of peace. Turns out, it’s already started. it’s my fault. Right now, it’s only just begun.”

Ming Yu confronts 8th in her grief over her sister. She blames 8th for Ming Hui’s death and cries distraughtly,

“I know. I know that even til death, my sister will never hate you. But I, I hate you!

Really, I think this scene would’ve had a lot more impact if 8th had said “Please, hate me.” instead of “I owe her.”
8th sits in the dark and has several flashbacks of his memories with Ming Hui, all emphasizing Ming Hui’s amazing loyalty and strength.
I believe Ming Hui would still say these words, perhaps even while she was dying:

Marrying you, I have never regretted it.

8th talks out loud to Ming Hui, his eyes mixed with love and grief.

“Ming Hui, I cannot pay you back in this life. In the next life, I will repay you a hundred fold. Ming Hui, I promise you, I won’t let you go alone…From now on, I will not back down. Even if that will incur my death, I will gladly meet you soon. I won’t let you down.”

Ming Yu visits Ruo Xi. She quickly drops to her knees before Ruo Xi.

“I, today came here to beg you. Ruo Xi, my sister already died. I can no longer stand watching 10th prince live a life worse than death. Instead of letting the emperor humiliate us and torture us so, why not just finish it off?

Ruo Xi finds out that 10th is being humiliated as a result of 4th’s scheming.

“Since the beginning, it’s always been winner takes all. There’s nothing to argue about. But the emperor…why does the emperor torture us and make things so difficult for us? First it was 8th prince, and then sister. Now it’s me, and 10th prince…”

It seems like Ruo Xi hasn’t realized just how bad it’s gotten with 10th’s situation, because she steps back and leans on the table in shock.

“10th prince. Now it’s 10th prince’s turn.”

Ming Yu continues beg Ruo Xi to ask 4th to have mercy and let it all be over quickly.

“If he’s being executed, I will follow him to be executed as well. But, to be brought back as captive and to be confined for life, this kind of suffering, do you think 10th will be able to stand it?”

Ming Yu prostrates herself before Ruo Xi as they both sob silently. Ruo Xi kneels down, takes Ming Yu’s hands, and commends her as 10th’s wife.

Ming Yu: “I have 10th prince in this life. I have no regrets.”
Ruo Xi: “Don’t worry, the ones who started this are not you all. The ones to blame shouldn’t be you. I will not let 10th Prince suffer anymore.”

This is really THE very moment when Ruo Xi decides to end all the suffering of her beloved childhood friends.

13th speaks up for 10th, asking for a lighter punishment. 4th says he’s already made up his mind.

Are you really being impartial, or are you just set on destroying him?

WORD, 13TH, WORD! 4th will have none of it, and quickly silences 13th.

4th: Enough! I’m punishing him because he deserves it! That bunch of people is scheming and pervasive. You’ve seen it for yourself. I cannot allow for a speck of compassion when dealing with them.
13th: But, have you ever thought about Ruo Xi?…if you do anything to 10th brother, you’re also hurting RUo Xi. Ruo Xi has been hurt enough.
4th: I’m doing this because of Ruo Xi. They will never see the end of me. Then Ruo Xi will have peaceful days…
13th: No, Ruo Xi will not stand aside and do anything. She’s the ‘death-seeking 13th sister’. She will not do nothing. To protect those around her, she’s willing to even sacrifice herself. Do you also want to see Ruo Xi in such a desperate state before you stop?
4th: They are the ones who refuse to stop!…It’s them. It’s all their fault.

True to 13th’s words, Ruo Xi has already been driven to the point of desperation. For the sake of her childhood friends, Ruo Xi has decided to give up her happiness. She enters the room, carrying a tray with a wine pitcher on it. 4th tells her to go back since they’re talking about political issues. (Wives aren’t supposed to interfere.) 13th echoes 4th, but Ruo Xi only smiles at him.
She pours a cup of alcohol and swallows it in one gulp.

“You could say that we were brought together by wine. Our friendship today, will also end with wine.”

4th has this look on his face like he doesn’t want to hear what Ruo Xi is about to say, because both 13th and 4th can tell that Ruo Xi is up to something.

Ruo Xi calmly reveals the truth.

I have come today to tell the truth. You’ve always thought that it was 8th Fu Jin who killed our baby. It’s actually not her. It’s me myself.
Back then, to 8th prince, who was still my brother-in-law, I said a few sentences. I told him to be very very careful of 4th prince, Long Ke Duo, Nian Geng Yao….

4th and 13th are shocked. 13th quickly tries to intervene, but Ruo Xi keeps on going. 13th can only watch helplessly.

I said all these because I know. I know everything. And it’s because I know, I tried to warn him. This is absolute.

Ruo Xi turns to 13th and apologizes for his imprisonment. Seriously, this has also got to be one of the most heart-wrenching moments for Ruo Xi. Having to tell her best friend face to face that she was part of the cause of his 10 year imprisonment has got to be difficult.

“I’m sorry. The one who caused you to be confined for 10 year was actually someone you’ve always trusted so much.”

Ruo Xi bows to 13th in apology. 13th is at a loss for words as he watches his best friend bow to him. Ruo Xi turns to 4th…

On the surface, it was 8th’s bunch that went against you, but was the instigator, directly or indirectly, who caused everyone, is me. The person you love most. All these years, you’ve been hating the wrong person!

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 33

4th stands in shock after the big reveal. He tells her to shut up, but Ruo Xi continues to push all the blame onto herself:

“It’s me! I hurt you and harmed you. The person who caused all this was me. The person you hate is standing in front of you right now.”

4th barely keeps himself under control as he quietly repeats “Get out”. He finally yells “Get out” for the last time.

13th, still the greatest friend ever, walks back with Ruo Xi. The confrontation takes another toll on Ruo Xi, as she begins to clutch her heart. The pain is too much, and Ruo Xi collapses right in front of 13th.
Ruo Xi is almost on the brink of death, since we see her hallucinating almost in a dream-like unconscious state. She’s up in the clouds, and sees Qiao Hui calling her back. Ruo Xi thinks to herself,

“I have nothing. I don’t have Jie Jie, I don’t have Yu Tan…I’ve also lost 4th prince. I have nothing already.”

She wakes up, only to see loyal 13th hovering by her side. AWW!! Right when Ruo Xi is in despair, 13th is there to greet her back with a reassuring smile. I LOVE THESE TWO!!!

“I don’t blame you at all…if there is hate, I can just hate destiny that made a fool out of us. Ruo Xi, promise me that you won’t give up…”

Ruo Xi smiles and weakly tells him how happy she is. 13th cutely says that he’s also happy to have her as a friend. Ruo Xi takes his hand and writes the characters for “14th” on his palm. He asks if there’s something she wants to tell 14th. She nods and makes the “OK” hand motion. AHHHHHHH THIS IS SO NOSTALGIC AND MELANCHOLY!!!!
13th doesn’t quite understand what she means. Ruo Xi only says “I agree”. 13th doesn’t ask any further, and agrees to pass on the word to 14th in exchange for Ruo Xi’s promise not to give up.

14th gets the message from 13th. AHH I MISS 13TH AND 14TH!!! 14th is obviously surprised to finally get the ok from Ruo Xi after waiting for years. 13th asks what she means, but 14th is like, I got this bro, let me handle it.

“Everything is for Ruo Xi.”

4th broods over his dilemma with Ruo Xi. The Empress asks why 4th hasn’t visited Ruo Xi in a while when it clearly hurts him not to see her. She consoles him, speaking up on Ruo Xi’s behalf. Everything that she says makes sense…she points out that Ruo Xi wasn’t even in love with him at the time, and that she was part of 8th’s estate, etc. etc.

Empress: “..your Majesty should understand her, understand her honesty, her sincerity.”
4th: “I know that she is sincere, but to save them, she decided to hurt me. Everything I did for her, she didn’t understand at all. She did not understand.”

Ahhh I love how the empress is able to offer him such solid advice, all the while maintaining a gentle disposition.

Ruo Xi, Qiao Hui, and some other maids overlook the Forbidden City. Ruo Xi apologizes to Qiao Hui for bringing her to the palace, to experience the same things she’s experiencing. Ruo Xi sadly looks up…

“Look. The sky outside is the real sky. Being in the palace, I have always just been a passerby.”

I love this scene because it reminds us how trapped and isolated Ruo Xi feels in the palace. She’s always wanted her freedom and independence, and being in the Forbidden City restricts and suffocates her.

We switch over to the royal court. 14th waltzes in with his marriage decree, issued by the FORMER EMPEROR. He asks for 4th’s approval of a certain marriage…TO MAERTAI RUO XI!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! 4th looks at the decree, which is sealed with the former emperor’s own seal. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SNAP. Both 14th and 4th know that 4th is in a huge predicament. Thankfully 4th doesn’t explode, but if I were 14th, I would run away like the wind.

Poor 13th had no clue that the message he helped pass on would inevitably result in the final divide between 4th and Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi asks what he thinks 4th will do. He reasons that if 4th was able to divorce Ming Hui and 8th, then he should also be able to prevent this marriage. Ruo Xi slyly says that if he could disobey this posthumous decree..then he could also disobey ANOTHER posthumous decree…AKA THE ONE WHEN THE FORMER EMPEROR NAMED HIS SUCCESSOR. OOOOHHHHHHH. 13th will not let Ruo Xi say such things about 4th.

13th: Ruo Xi, is it really impossible for everything to go back to normal?
Ruo Xi: It’s impossible to go back to the past. Yu Tan died, the child is gone. You were in solitary confinement for 10 years…These all stand between us. We cannot pretend that nothing has happened. Right now, I just want to leave.

Ruo Xi says that she didn’t know 14th had the royal decree, but that if marriage is the only way out, she’s willing to go to that extent.

“I trust that 14th prince will not force me. I marry him in name only.”

13th shakes his head after hearing the “in name only” part. How ironic that Ruo Xi, who was so adamant about marrying only for love, now must marry in name only for the sake of escaping the palace.

4th asks 13th if Ruo Xi really cannot bear to live in the palace anymore. 13th cautiously replies that Ruo Xi might not be meant to live here, because her mind is unlike everyone else’s.

4th: “Could it be that she is not from the same era as us?”

Suddenly 4th remembers when Ruo Xi told him “I’M NOT FROM THIS TIME PERIOD” and puts two and two together. He says to himself that it can’t be, but then bursts out

“So what if she isn’t from our time period. Is there a difference?”

13th can only look down in reply.

I LOVE THIS SCENE!!! Every scene with the Empress in it is so beautifully done!! Ruo Xi and the empress go walking out in the garden. The empress carefully asks Ruo Xi if she could consider letting go for the emperor, so that they [4th and Ruo Xi] can both live together for the rest of their lives.

Ruo Xi: I don’t want to harm anyone, but someone gets hurt because of me…I cannot accept that.
Empress: Can you really bear to leave the emperor? Can you truly let go of all those feelings during these past years?
Ruo Xi: I can’t, but I still have to.

The Empress doesn’t criticize Ruo Xi at all. She gently leaves Ruo Xi with a small bit of advice–to think it over well and to only decide once she’s absolutely sure.
The doctor informs Ruo Xi that her life expectancy is only a few more years at the most.

8th talks alone with 4th. He tells 4th EVERYTHING about his past relationship with Ruo Xi. 4th listens to the entire story while clenching his fists. Omg everything’s gonna boil over at this rate…first the big reveal, second the marriage decree, and lastly 8th’s relationship with Ruo Xi. 8th has GUTS!!!!!

After hearing the whole truth about Ruo Xi & 8th, 4th visits Ruo Xi with a somber, detached look on his face. 4th is now distant and harsh towards Ruo Xi.

“I finally understand why you could never let go of 8th. I’ve understood why you had him take precaution against me. When he was kneeling in the hall, you were accompanying him in the temple.”

Ruo Xi asks if 9th was the one to tell him this. 4th replies he actually wishes it were…but it was 8th. He quietly tells her about all her happy memories with 8th. He gets to Ruo Xi and 8th’s vow to be together forever..when Ruo Xi begins crying and begs him not to say any more. 4th looks at Ruo Xi with this heartwrenching look of disbelief and hurt.

“When he was telling me all these, I said that over and over again in my heart, but I could only listen on. I could only listen to it! Do you know how that feels like? Do you know how hurt I am? So it’s true that words can kill a person. What 8th brother said is like a knife stabbing me one by one.”

And 4th starts LAUGHING while he cries. OMGGGGGGG. Ruo Xi reaches toward 4th’s face. Since 4th is hurting, she’s hurting too, and she desperately wants to comfort him. But 4th grabs her hand instead of letting her touch his face, and pushes her away.

“I won’t allow you to touch me anymore. I said before that the only thing I’m afraid of is that you will leave me. Right now, I’m not afraid of anything.”

He leaves Ruo Xi crying her heart out.

4th grants 14th the marriage with Ruo Xi. Before an altar, Ruo Xi recites a poem she wrote:

“I knew him before I met him, but now meeting is as good as not seeing each other. Cutting off ties with the Emperor in order to kill ourselves with longing.”

It’s finally Ruo Xi’s last day in the Forbidden City. Ruo Xi leaves by a horse-drawn carriage. 4th watches the carriage leave as he cries to himself. 4th reaches behind his back to grab his braid. He brings it in front of him, and looks at it while recalling how Ruo Xi grabbed his braid. He grips it and cries.

13th accompanies Ruo Xi on her way out. He offers her a drink, reminiscent of their first meeting and the start of their friendship.
8th appears to bid Ruo Xi farewell. AHHHHHHH. THIS IS SUCH A PERFECT SCENE, OMG. Ruo Xi slowly walks out to meet 8th. 8th walks toward her.

Ruo Xi bows and thanks him for helping her leave the palace. 8th modestly says that he had his own desires, but then goes on to say that 14th will definitely treat her well, and that his house will be good for her health.

“Treat everything in the past as dead, and from now, it’s a new beginning.”

Ruo Xi asks if there’s anything he wants to say to 14th.

“My end is near, there’s nothing left to be said.”

8th goes on to say the MOST PERFECT LITTLE SPEECH EVERRRRRRRRRRR.

“You know what I’m thinking. Since you know, you will be able to understand. No hard feelings. In this lifetime, we are not fated. Whatever it is, we’ll leave it to the next.”

8th gets teary, and tells her to go. She bows again and turns to leave. Suddenly Ruo Xi tearfully thinks to herself that she might not ever see 8th again. She turns around and runs to hug 8th.

8th is taken aback at first, but he gently pats her on the back. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

“Forget about the palace, forget about all of us.”

He wipes Ruo Xi’s tears, joking that she needs to look more like a bride, so she should stop crying. Ruo Xi does her best to put on a smile for 8th. 8th is still teary, but he keeps himself together and tells her to quickly go. AHHHHHHHHH. 13th wonders why 8th told 4th everything, without sparing a thought for Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi clarifies that 8th did that to make 4th let go, and to let her leave the palace. 13th looks back at 8th,

“It seems he’s still the virtuous 8th prince who values his relationships.”

They ride away in the carriage, leaving behind 8th. Ruo Xi catches one last glimpse of 8th as they ride away. SO SAD!!!!

Time for the last goodbye….TO 13TH. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Both of them don’t really know how to handle this last goodbye. They get it done and over with as quickly as they can, probably because if they didn’t, it would be even more painful for them.

13th: “When the grass is green next year, old friend will no longer look the same.
Ruo Xi: The sea holds our closest friends, and the ends of the earth are our neighbors.”

13th grabs Ruo Xi in a short hug. He simply tells her to take care, and then pulls away. Ruo Xi quickly gets in the carriage and rides away, all the while crying in Qiao Hui’s arms.

BBJX Episode 18-20

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 18

We leave off with Ruo Xi asking 4th if he’s willing to marry her. 4th DOESN’T EVEN FLINCH, and just looks at her with this gentle look in his eyes.

4th: “Right now, I’m not willing to.”
Ruo Xi: “If I have to marry Crown Prince, I’d rather die.”
4th: “That won’t do either. Don’t forget, I saved your life. Without my permission, you’re not allowed to die.”

Omg, can 4th be any cooler?

4th: “You can only wait.”
Ruo Xi: “Wait?”
*4th puts the hairpin back in Ruo Xi’s hair* “Since you’re already wearing my hairpin and you said you want to marry me, what do you think you have to wait for?”

Yes, he apparently he can. It gets better.

“You’ve just recovered. You should rest more and recuperate. You look really pale right now, I don’t want to marry an ugly woman.”

And then 4th walks away. OMG.

Ruo Xi returns back home to find 8th standing in the courtyard.

“I couldn’t possibly watch you marry this kind of person. Even if you don’t marry me, I don’t want you to suffer with him.”

Ruo Xi remains distant with 8th. *cue the sad music* She indirectly makes jabs at him by talking about how none of them can control their own destiny, make their own decisions, etc. etc. Which…I don’t really understand, I mean SHE’S the one who walked out on the relationship, not him. 8th still wanted to be with her, but how could he possibly give up THE THRONE? I’m actually on 8th’s side because we found out later that Ruo Xi just wanted him to give up the throne to show his love for her….

8th: “You have someone else in your heart, don’t you?”
Ruo Xi: “Don’t tell me that you want to control my heart as well?”
8th: “I hope it’s not 4th brother. Otherwise you’ll only suffer…”

Haha, this whole conversation is so ironic, because for one, YES 8th wanted Ruo Xi’s heart to belong to him. And YES Ruo Xi is gonna fall in love with 4th. And lastly, 4th is gonna end up being Emperor.
After his depressing conversation with Ruo Xi, 8th goes to visit his dying mother. They have the saddest conversation ever…

Mom: “Who doesn’t look at birth status?…If I had come from a good family, your path wouldn’t have to be so rocky.”
8th: “…in your eyes, how many are my accomplishments?”
Mom: “..you definitely haven’t lost to your other brothers…”
8th: “What is bestowed by others cannot be compared to what one earns by his own means. If I didn’t have the strength, would I dare to rise to the challenge…These many years, everything I’ve done was all to enable us to gain a sense of self respect and not let others belittle us.”

Mom says she knows 8th will succeed (again, really bittersweet because we the viewers know the outcome) and that she’ll help him.

8th: “No matter how lowly our births, we’ll surely attain wealth and rank in our future.”

8th leaves, and as his mom looks at him walking away, she says

“The only way I can help is to not drag you down.”

She refuses to take her medicine, in order to quicken her death. What gets me is that the servants have no choice but to obey her. Omg. 8th’s mom didn’t get a very large role, but she nailed this scene. It was so sad because she knowingly talked to her son for the last time of her life. This is where I really feel for 8th, because he’s trying to hard to defy his lowly birth status, especially for the sake of his mother. And now his mom has sacrificed herself for his sake.

8th’s mom passes away. Ruo Xi tries to write a letter to 8th, but can’t think of what to say. She goes over to their quarters. She simply bows three times near the gate, in the direction of their house. The emperor passes by, and only pauses for a moment outside the house.

“So this is the Emperor’s love, but a mere moment’s worth.”

Time for 14th to try and talk some sense into Ruo Xi!

“One can call you heartless, but you actually bowed your head before Liang Concubine’s place. One can call you compassionate, but…even completely unrelated people can say consoling words [to 8th bro]. But you remain indifferent like you don’t even know. You didn’t even offer basic words asking how he is. Ruo Xi, do you really not care at all about 8th brother?…Do you know how disappointed 8th brother is?
Ruo Xi: “14th prince, do you know what longing feels like? It’s like a needle in your heart. How the heart is wounded, how the heart hurts, you don’t understand. Since two people can no longer be together, then why hinder them by doing things that make it so hard to let go, to let their heart continue to hurt? Now the more it hurts, the easier it is for him to forget. I would rather he feel hurt now, then forget me completely. From now on, he won’t think of me anymore.
14th: “A needle in the heart? What seemed like heartlessness is actually heartfelt concern. If you’re willing to wait, if it’s still possible…”
Ruo Xi: “Wait? There’s no turning back anymore. Moreover, will His Majesty let me wait forever?”
14th: “Then can you forget 8th bro?”
Ruo Xi: “I’ve already forgotten.”

14th gives in, and gives Ruo Xi advice on what to do in the future.

4th bro and Ruo Xi talk in the snow, as they look at tree blossoms. 4th asks Ruo Xi what’s wrong, and Ruo Xi says that it’s getting harder and harder to survive in the palace. 4th says that not everyone wants to hear the truth. Ruo Xi replies that if he wants her to put on an act, she can, but she thinks 4th prince would rather hear the truth, even if it hurts. I love how candid they are!

“Ruo Xi, do you not understand your own heart? Too many fears and too many concerns. Everyday you tried to balance yourself, and you’re too careful.”

Ruo Xi flicks her forehead, and tells her to go inside to stay warm. Ruo Xi returns home and wonders if 4th understands her own heart. She decides she needs to understand herself better, and takes off her precious bracelet.

Ruo Xi entrusts 14th with her bracelet, asking him to return it to 8th bro for her. 13th and 4th bro walk up, so 14th holds up the bracelet, and says that it’d be impolite for him to decline it. LOL 14th is implying that it’s a gift for himself. I love 14th’s guts. As if on cue, 13th leaves 4th to talk with Ruo Xi alone. Ruo Xi says that it’s not what 4th thinks it is. He says he doesn’t care what she was doing; he just doesn’t want her to fight with 14th again.

4th: “From today onwards, never lie to me. Because I’m the same as you. I’d rather hear the ugly truth than have you lie to deceive me.”
Ruo Xi: “Then can you promise never to lie to me?”

4th points out how careful Ruo Xi is, always making sure never to let anyone get the advantage over her.

4th: “I promise you.”
Ruo Xi: “Why?”
4th: “No particular reason. I ought to.” *SWOON*
Ruo Xi: “What if there are some thing I’m not willing to talk about. Then what?”
4th: “You can directly tell me you don’t want to talk about it. But never lie to deceive me.”

Um, I really love 4th. I love how 4th and Ruo Xi can speak on equal terms with each other. Ruo Xi can be sure that 4th will be honest with her, and she can be bold enough to make her own requests. Ruo Xi says that she has something to ask him. *cue epic suspenseful music*
She writes the word “throne” on his hand, and asks if he wants it or not.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 19

We start where we left off–Ruo Xi’s question: Does 4th want the throne? 4th admits that he does. Ruo Xi asks if 13th knows about his ambitions. 4th says that he doesn’t have to tell 13th, because 13th knows what he’s thinking already. Ruo Xi asks why 4th is taking the risk to tell her the truth.

“The bet you placed was too big. Although I didn’t want to gamble, I was afraid that if I missed this chance, you’ll keep your heart closed too tightly. If I missed this chance, i don’t know if there will be another one. Telling others isn’t something you would do.”

4th takes his turn to get the truth out of Ruo Xi. He leans near her, and asks her if 10th’s kick hurt. (from the last episode, when 10th thought Ruo Xi was just another maid, and kicked her out of anger) Ruo Xi admits it hurts, but not too much. 4th gives her some medicine.
4th asks why Ruo Xi is so shaken up after talking to the emperor. They discuss political matters, and then 4th cutely says that when the time is right, he’ll ask the emperor for her hand in marriage. He holds out his hand to Ruo Xi. At first she gives him a low high five, but then obliges and puts her hand in his. AHHHHHHHHHHH.

“The more your heart is afraid, the more your face has to be calm. If others can’t figure you out, they won’t easily make moves. Who would be like you, and wear their emotions on their sleeves?”

4th leaves Ruo Xi with his bit of “iceberg” advice, and snatches her calligraphy practice paper as he departs. He says he’ll take it to see if she improves her calligraphy the next time. AND HE LEAVES WITH THIS HUGE GRIN ON HIS FACE. AHHHHHHH.

10th and Ming Yu have some marriage problems. 10th is hopelessly in love with Ming Yu, but can’t bring himself to come right out and declare his love for her. Ming Yu is jealous about 10th and Ruo Xi, and thinks that 10th doesn’t love her. Ruo Xi smartly brings them together with some sly words. 10th and Ming Yu become a happy couple, just like newlyweds. This little love story is so cute!!! It’s quite refreshing, especially when I know 4th/Ruo Xi won’t work out so smoothly.

And, of course, right after Ming Yu & 10th’s cute story, we get angsty 8th bro. 14th returns Ruo Xi’s bracelet to 8th. 8th gives this heartbreaking little smile, and then smashes the bracelet into bits with an ink holder. He ominously says that Ruo Xi has chosen to be with 4th, and then has flashbacks of his happier days with Ruo Xi. Omg I still feel bad for 8th prince, even though I hated him in the next couple episodes. And 14th has to watch his brother break the bracelet. If you’re wondering why 14th just won’t shut up about how Ruo Xi should be nicer to 8th, now you know why.

As if on cue, 14th finds Ruo Xi to tell her that he finally gave 8th the bracelet. He tells her about 8th’s insecurities about her and 4th.

14th: “8th brother said that ever since you entered the palace, you treated 4th different from the others…8th brother constantly paid attention to your every action…”
Ruo Xi: “I really didn’t know this is what he thought from the start to the end. That’s because he never showed his true thoughts. He never really trusted me.”

Ruo Xi feels hurt by 8th’s distrust, and 14th asks if Ruo Xi really loves 4th. Ruo Xi confesses that she does, (more out of frustration, just to tell 14th off) and runs away.

She bumps into 4th and 13th. Both of the princes know that something is wrong with Ruo Xi. 13th smartly walks away to leave 4th and Ruo Xi alone. Ruo Xi says she doesn’t want to talk about what happened. 4th accepts it, and doesn’t force her to talk about it.

“In the Forbidden City, I am not alone. 4th prince is willing to listen to my fears, worries, and troubles. He always reminds me of the unforseen danger. He could open himself to me…it’s a good beginning.”

Ruo Xi meets 8th bro to clear some things up.

“If I am more resigned to fate, if I have more tolerance, and am more forgiving, if I have less prejudice, perhaps 8th prince and I will have a different ending…Everything is like that jade bangle, regardless of its past glory, and beauty, it has already become dust…I don’t ask to be forgiven. I only want to sincerely wish that you take good care of yourself.”

8th bro says he’s glad Ruo Xi is speaking frankly with him, and the two depart. Somehow this is even sadder because 8th bro hardly says anything. Just like when he broke the bangle bracelet, he has this little sad smile on his face. :’( So sad, 8th bro!!!

Ruo Xi decides to play a trick on 4th. She puts salt in his dessert. Since 4th is eating with the emperor and the rest of the princes, he can’t say anything about it. He only drinks lots of tea because he’s so thirsty.
Ruo Xi is prepared to face 4th’s wrath. 4th asks for Ruo Xi’s hand. He takes her hand and whisks her away (LITERALLY). OMG. 4th notes that Ruo Xi is no longer scared of him. She asks why she should be scared. 4th threateningly raises his finger, ready to give her another flick in the forehead. She admits that she was just a little scared of him before. 4th walks away, and says that he’s not saying anything because he’s too thirsty.

Ruo Xi hangs out with 13th. This scene is so bittersweet, omg. Ruo Xi knows what’s gonna happen to 13th in the future, which is why she’s so sad while she’s drinking with him. She knows it might be the last time they get to hang out together. 13th talks about what his ideal life would be if he weren’t royalty.

“But, I’m already born into royalty. Even if I could escape, I’d still be thinking of my favorite brother. I don’t want to leave him all alone to face all the danger.”

Ruo Xi is moved to tears by his words, because she knows what’s to come.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 20

Again, leaving where we left off in episode 19, Ruo Xi and 13th talk while drinking together. This is so sad because 13th is basically giving her his last words. :’( Ruo Xi tells 13th that she can’t tell 4th about her and 8th. She has her own reasons, and she can’t take this risk. 13th doesn’t press her for answers, and simply says he knows she has her reasons. And THIS is why Ruo Xi likes 4th and 13th so much! They simply trust her judgment without questioning her actions.

“Actually, 4th brother hides his ideas very deeply, and it’s extremely hard for him to get too close to anyone. Although I can help to share some of his worries, however, he’s lonesome after all…Ruo Xi, as long as you’re willing, you really can open 4th brother’s heart. And only you can, because you can understand his ambition and understand his pain.”

Ruo Xi silently listens to all that 13th says, while leaning on her alcohol bottle.

“You don’t take anyone’s side or push anyone down…But, if you get involved in our brothers’ feud, you’ll lose everything…But you? Why do you make sacrifices for our personal battles? They shouldn’t be your sacrifices.”

The next day, 4th is accused of spreading slanderous rumors about Crown Prince. Ruo Xi, who’s watching from the sidelines, realizes that this is all a trap set by 8th bro. Annnd this is where I don’t feel bad for 8th anymore. 4th denies any involvement in this case. 13th steps up to take the blame for 4th prince. AND 8TH SMIRKS. HE SMIRKS. AWETHJAEARTWEMTJEATWEJAKLGTJARLOYHJ!!!!! 10th speaks up, saying that everyone knows 4th and 13th are friends. 14th steps forward to speak in their defense. GO 14TH!

“In my opinion, this matter isn’t something 4th brother would do…He is usually the most filial..He definitely won’t do something so immoral.”

Emperor asks 4th if this is really 13th’s doing. Ruo Xi comments that this is a trap–4th can’t answer yes or no. 4th can only say he doesn’t know. 13th is ordered to solitary confinement.

13th removes his hat, as 4th tears up and clenches his fist. OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. ARE YOU CRYING YET?

4th is left all alone, kneeling in the room. His hands are bloody because of the broken tea cup in front of him. Ruo Xi kneels beside him and puts her hand on his shoulder. In tears, she begs him to go back, for 13th’s sake.

4th clenches his bloody hand, and forces himself to get up and leave. AWEJTAOIAWSOJGOLJG. ARE YOU SOBBING HYSTERICALLY YET?
Lu Wu hears about 13th’s imprisonment, and appeals to 4th, 14th, and Ruo Xi to let her take care of him. 14th delivers Lu Wu’s letter to Ruo Xi, saying that it’s nearly impossible to get the emperor to let Lu Wu take care of 13th.

Ruo Xi decides to take the risk anyway. She implores the emperor to let Lu Wu take care of 13th during his imprisonment. The emperor punishes her by having her kneel out in the garden. For DAYS.
During Ruo Xi’s punishment, basically the entire palace comes to visit her. Yu Tan, the eunuchs, 4th, 8th, and 14th all come by to talk to her. T_T

Ruo Xi is still kneeling in the garden when it starts to rain. 4th finally returns to the palace to see her. Ruo Xi looks up to see 4th standing there in the rain. He throws down his umbrella.

AND HE SHIELDS HER WITH HIS CAPE. OMG. I believe this is the best scene ever in BBJX. The rain, the music, the GESTURES, omg.

“During this rain, someone’s willing to stand next to me to bear and suffer the pain with me.”

Ruo Xi asks 4th to go back, since she’s accepted his thoughts. 4th hugs Ruo Xi. HUG IN THE RAIN. I’M SHIPPING THEM SO MUCH! And then 8th and 14th come by, and see 4th and Ruo Xi hugging. IN 8TH’S FACE.

4th walks up to 8th, and I half expect them to start a kung fu fight right then and there, but he simply walks past him. VERY INTENSE.

8th kneels down, and looks at Ruo Xi with pain in his eyes. He tells her that even if she doesn’t love him, she should think about Ruo Lan, who’s fraught with worry. Ruo Xi reaches down to shake the water off 8th’s robe, but he pushes away her hand. OMG. SO FULL OF ANGST! 14th tells 8th to go on ahead of him, because he has stuff to talk about with Ruo Xi.

8th leaves 14th with Ruo Xi. I half expected 14th to rant about how Ruo Xi should be with 8th AGAIN, but BLESS HIS HEART, he GIVES HER FOOD. AWWWWWWWWW. 14th proudly says that since he hid the food with him, no one will know. ARE YOU FALLING FOR 14TH YET???????????
He asks if this is worth doing. Ruo Xi says that if she were in 13th’s situation, 13th would do the same thing for her. 14th asks if she would do the same thing for him, if he were in 13th’s situation.

“Whether it was 10th prince, or you, I would do it…the feelings for everyone are the same.”

OMG I love 14th!!!! 14th offers her his umbrella, but she refuses it. 14th reluctantly leaves her, and we get THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SHOT EVER, with 14th getting up with the sunlight behind him, and the rain blurring the camera. OMG.
Back at his house, 4th is standing out in the rain. This is his gesture to Ruo Xi. Since she’s out in the rain, he’ll do the same thing too. The episode ends with Ruo Xi collapsing in the rain.

BBJX episode 11- 17

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Episode 11

Ruo Xi gets taught horseback riding by the Monglian princess. But she loses control of the horse when she drops the reigns. 8th bro quickly catches up to her on horseback and rescues Ruo Xi. With Ruo Xi in his arms, 8th rides back to the camp. Ruo Xi tells herself to let her savor this moment just this once. She stays close to 8th, and 8th smiles broadly as he concludes that he’s in her heart after all.
Will…not..fall for 8th’s huge grin……..

I love Ruo Xi & the Mongolian princess’ friendship. 14th visits the camp in disguise to find 8th even though he’s been ordered not to by the Emperor. He has Ruo Xi find a way for him and 8th to meet. Crown Prince seizes this opportunity to get rid of 8th and 14th silently. He calls an all out search of the surrounding area, claiming that there are thieves somewhere.
8th takes an arrow for 14th. 14th quickly draws his sword and blocks all the other arrows. Omg, I need some martial art scenes NOW. They quickly escape and hide with the help of Ruo Xi and the Mongolian princess.
Crown Prince is pissed, and orders his men to search the entire camp. The Mongolian princess (I seriously forgot her name T_T) hides 14th in her tent. Crown Prince enters to search the tent, and the princess pretends to think he’s the thief (since they’re in the dark, she can’t tell who he is) She beats him up real good, and acts surprised when she finds out it’s the Crown Prince. rofl, I love this scene. She is so smart!!

This is the episode in which I tell Ruo Xi and 8th to just get married already. Ruo Xi tends to 8th’s wound, and is very conscious of how close she is to him. She gets up to leave, but 8th grabs her hand and tells her to stay. Ruo Xi tries to leave, but 8th says that his wound will reopen if she keeps on pulling on his hand. He pulls her in for A HUG. OMG. I expect them to kiss, but they don’t.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 12-13

In episodes 12 & 13, 8th and Ruo Xi happily act like little lovebirds. They walk hand in hand out in the forest. They stargaze together. They ride together. It’s weird seeing them together after all these episodes of Ruo Xi rejecting 8th.

What’s so sad is that their happiness is short-lived.

Ruo Xi & 8th sit together in the forest. 8th tries to kiss Ruo Xi, but she has a flashback of 4th’s forced kiss, and pushes him away.

“Ruo Xi, do you know throughout all these years, how much I’ve missed you? I wish for you to willingly, happily marry me. I don’t want Ruo Lan’s incident to happen again. But your heart is always so difficult to understand…Don’t look at me like that. Why do you always use that gaze to look at me? (BECAUSE SHE KNOWS WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN TO YOU!)”
“I don’t want to lose you. I want you to always be well.”
“You won’t lose me. I’ll always guard you by your side.”

8th kisses Ruo Xi, and they both fall to the ground. And happily continue to kiss. 8th literally has a plant for a pillow. On the forest floor. Erm….

This is basically the moment where everything falls apart in 8th/Ruo Xi’s little happy fairy tale. Ruo Xi and 8th go for a walk in the forest. Ruo Xi takes the opportunity to breach the subject of the throne. She agrees to marry him, only if he gives up the throne for her. 8th stops right at that moment, and the change on his face is SCARY.

“I don’t think this has anything to do with the two of us.”

Well, you’re gonna be together, I think this is kinda a serious issue. 8th attempts to say “I think you’re tired” and avoid the subject. Ruo Xi pursues the issue and talks about all the things they can do together in the different seasons of the year. What’s sad is that she probably knows she’s just dreaming, and that it’ll never happen.
8th thinks that Ruo Xi has been approaching him the entire time, solely to make him give up the throne.

“…every single word you said to me, was it all for today?”
“My feelings for you are true.”

And then Ruo Xi does the most heartbreaking thing ever–she grabs 8ths hand and puts it on her heart while breaking down in tears..

“You know it. You are inside here. You know it!!!”
“Ruo Xi…why…Why can’t one decide his own destiny?…In my own heart, I thought the same way.”

OMG and the dramatic musics makes the scene all the more saddening. Knowing the ending has changed my perspective a bit. I empathize more with Ruo Xi, because like me knowing the ending, she also knows what the future holds. She knows about all the angst surrounding the fight for the throne, which is why she doesn’t want 8th to aim for the throne.
Buuuut I feel pretty bad for 8th, who, by this time, is completely confused by Ruo Xi. He’s spent his whole life building up his power, all for the throne, and he can’t just give that up, with Ruo Xi going “I got my own reasons, 8th, just abandon the throne!!”
On the other hand, I think Ruo Xi hasn’t fully devoted her love to 8th, because she’s holding back so much. Sure she doesn’t want 8th to get hurt, but she also ought to have the desire to support him in all he does.

Back at the palace, Ruo Xi runs into 8th. She continues to distance herself from him, and treats him coldly. She mentions that she heard 8th’s son has been harassing Ruo Lan. She wants 8th to make sure this isn’t happening. 8th dismisses it as a rumor, not the truth.

“What’s happened to us? Weren’t we fine on the grasslands? Why can’t you be like you were then?”
“On the grasslands, there were only you and I. There wasn’t the throne, nor your wives, and your son.”

8th promises Ruo Xi to look into the matter, and asks her to reconsider marrying him. He says he’s confused (oh, aren’t we all) and doesn’t understand what she’s not telling him.

8th makes good on his promise, and visits Ruo Lan. He clears up the misunderstanding about the death of Ruo Lan’s true love. Well, it’s about time!

“…I began to know your heart is following him to the ground. Though I have won around the world, I can’t expect to win over him.”

Ruo Lan begins to sob. Even though she tries to regain her composure in front of 8th, she continues to cry throughout his little monologue. I felt SO BAD for Ruo Lan during this scene!!! Even though Ruo Lan is always polite and composed in front of 8th, we all know that she’s not fooling anyone. We all know she despises 8th and is as unhappy as heck.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 14-16

Episode 14

Shippy 4th/Ruo Xi moment: One of the servants lets a doggy run loose. The doggy goes over to 4th, and all the princes and maids freak out. Omg, 4th + fluffy little dog. Best thing ever. Ruo Xi quickly gets back the dog, and 4th just does his little smirk. LOVE!!!!
14th confronts Ruo Xi and asks what happened ever since the expedition. He points out that ever since then, Ruo Xi & 8th haven’t been the same. Ruo Xi ignores his question and excuses herself.

8th’s wives discuss Ruo Xi’s possible marriage to 8th. The other wife (I forgot her name..) tells Ruo Lan that she knows that 8th will be happy if he marries Ruo Xi. She’s willing to do anything to support 8th and make him happy.

“A man’s fate is a woman’s destiny.”

The two wives seem to reconcile with each other, as Ruo Lan clears up the misunderstanding that she’s taunting the other wife. Ruo Lan discusses the marriage with Ruo Xi, telling her that 8th is good to all his wives. She gives Ruo Xi the choice to accept/reject the marriage offer.

I love all these snow scenes. So beautiful!!!!

TIME FOR THE FATED MEETING IN THE SNOW!!!! THIS IS SO SAD.
Ruo Xi and 8th bro meet by a lake in the snow. I need to say that I LOVE RUO XI’S CAPE. Ruo Xi asks 8th bro one question: yes or no? In other words…give up the throne or not? Marry her or not? 8th looks at her with conflicted eyes…

“Why must you force me? Why do you demand that I choose between two things that I have simultaneously?

OMG. 8TH IS SO TORN!!!!!!! He ends up staying silent, so Ruo Xi infers that “no” is his answer. She warns him to watch out for 4th bro and other political figures.

“From now on, you and I shall have nothing to do with each other.”
“Ruo Xi!!!”
“I am a person afraid of death. Not worth holding onto.”

AND RUO XI LEAVES HIM STANDING THERE IN THE SNOW. OMG.
I feel pretty bad for 8th bro now. He’s been lead on by Ruo Xi SO BAD, and now she’s just rejected him TO HIS FACE. Because he won’t give up the throne. I think Ruo Xi knows that 8th won’t give up the throne, but just wants him to prove his love for her. After all, she knows how history will play out, and she knows 8th can’t give up his dream. In the end, I think her motives for having him give up the throne are selfish, simply for her own assurance that he loves her.

Ruo Xi runs away in tears. She slips on the snow and twists her ankle. 13th and 4th come across her and help her up. 13th goes to find some servants to carry her back to the palace, while 4th waits with Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi holds onto 4th’s arm (AHHHHHHH!!) and silently cries as it snows.

“Stop crying. If you really want to torture yourself, it’s best to shut yourself in your room and do it. Once you go outside, not only will you be disturbed by someone, but you won’t be able to do it to the full extent.”

Apparently 4th’s attempt at comforting Ruo Xi completely fails. She pushes him away and falls again. She starts throwing snowballs at 4th, who simply deflects them with his cape like it’s no big deal. LOVE 4TH. Ruo Xi continues to chuck snowballs at 4th as she gets carried away on a stretcher. I love these two.

14th is, expectedly, pissed off at Ruo Xi.

“You still feel pain? Then let my actions let you feel other people’s pain. The pain of knowing and losing love hurts more than not knowing love at all. If you knew it would end like this, then why did you agree in the first place? Who are you playing with?”

I’m sorry, but I’m actually applauding 14th for trying to talk some sense into Ruo Xi. Yes, her decision is agonizing and hard for her too but, omg. Poor 8th. Left in the dust! By his loved one! But, 14th starts to get a bit violent, as he grabs Ruo Xi’s arm and taunts her.
13th and 4th to the rescue!!! YAY! 14th backs off, and 13th and 4th have a buddy-buddy talk with Ruo Xi. 13th offers to listen to Ruo Xi’s troubles, but she declines. Ruo Xi tells 13th about Min Min’s feelings for him. He says that he has no feelings for her. 4th simply tells Ruo Xi to let her ankle heal completely.
OMG I LOVE 4TH AND RUO XI. He doesn’t say much to her, but he obviously cares for her in a different way than 13th/8th. He respects her space and doesn’t press her to tell him what’s on her mind.

^Um…I just put that because of how pretty it is. ._. Love how it shows the architecture.
Episode 15

Back at another expedition, we have a circle of glances, as Min Min looks at 13th, 13th looks at Ruo Xi, Ruo Xi looks at 4th, 4th looks at Ruo Xi, and 8th looks at Ruo Xi looking at 4th. Very intense.

Ruo Xi breaks the news to Min Min that 13th doesn’t have any feelings for her. Min Min wonders what part of her he doesn’t like. And to add to the drama, Min Min finds out that 14th is actually a prince, not Ruo Xi’s secret lover. Min Min is angry at Ruo Xi for lying to her and using her to hide 14th. She threatens to tell the emperor the truth, and rides off in a fit of anger. 14th tells Ruo Xi to put all the blame on him if the emperor finds out, since he’s a prince. I admit it. 14th was really cool in that scene.
13th and 14th catch up with Min Min and ask her not to tell the emperor. Min Min agrees not to tell him only if Ruo Xi wins in a horseback riding race. Ruo Xi accepts Min Min’s challenge and wins.

Min Min quickly agrees to forgive Ruo Xi. She only wanted to annoy Ruo Xi a bit to get back at her for lying. Ruo Xi cutely hides behind 13th’s back, saying that she’ll just hide behind this dependable hero. Ahahaha.
14th and Ruo Xi ask 13th not to tell the emperor about 14th sneaking into the camp. 13th agrees because of his friendship with Ruo Xi. Ruo Xi does the peace sign, and 13th does the peace sign back. 14th looks at them like, “What the heck?” 14th has yet to join the Progressive Thinkers In The Qing Dynasty Club.
Episode 16

^I love Min Min’s hairstyle!

Min Min is told by her father that she’s got an arranged marriage with a prince. She doesn’t want to be in a loveless marriage. Ruo Xi reasons with her, saying that if she keeps on looking at the moon, (aka 13th) she won’t ever get to see the sun (possibly the new prince guy).

Ruo Xi prepares a special performance for Min Min. Min Min does a graceful dance that’s absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! All the princes gawk at her. 4th cutely imagines Ruo Xi in the place of Min Min, dancing only for him. For once, 4th doesn’t get a fake scene. YES!!!! This one is so pretty!!!

Everyone is impressed by Min Min’s performance (and at Ruo Xi for directing it). Min Min finally gets to hear 13th play the flute. She cries as she hears his flute playing. Aww. I love Min Min’s outfit/hairstyle, especially with the red ribbons.

4th is basically the only one that speaks the truth to Ruo Xi. No matter how much she avoids her marriage and vows to become a nun, the truth is that she’ll get married eventually. She needs to evaluate her options wisely if she doesn’t want to end up in an unhappy marriage. Which….4th should’ve told her BEFORE she rejected 8th. ANYWAY, I like that 4th is blunt and straightforward with Ruo Xi.

“The palace is the worst place to dream. I advise you to wake up and think of your next step. When the matter finally comes, you won’t be able to do anything.
“Is not marrying really not a possibility? I will not hurt anyone by not marrying. Why do I still have to marry?”
“Is it you don’t understand what I’m saying, or that you don’t want to understand?”

^4th & 13th standing all dignified with their umbrellas.

4th is investigating the corrupt use of funds that were supposed to help the citizens. He finds out that 9th bro is part of the fiasco, and consults 8th about how to handle this situation. Eventually, the emperor calls of the investigation, so the matter blows over for now. 13th asks Ruo Xi what she thinks should be done. Ruo Xi says that even 9th bro should be punished for his wrongdoings, so that corruption won’t prosper in the future.
I looooove this scene!!!!!!

13th suddenly says that he’s gotta go. He leaves 4th and Ruo Xi alone. AHAHA they totally planned this. 4th hands a present to Ruo Xi, saying “It’s nothing.” I LOVE 4TH. Ruo Xi tries to refuse the gift, so 4th calls out “14th bro!”. Ruo Xi quickly grabs the gift and turns around to see if 14th is there. He’s not–4th bro tricked her! And then he walks away really quickly, telling Ruo Xi not to follow him in case 14th sees. LOL. So Ruo Xi is stuck holding the gift.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 17

9th bro is pissed off at 8th over the whole corruption ideal. He goes drinking, and is prompted by the other guys to have some fun with Wu Lu (13th’s courtesan friend). They try to force Wu Lu to stay and drink with them, only to be interrupted by 14th. 14th angrily escorts Wu Lu out of the room. Wu Lu doesn’t put the blame on 9th, only asking 14th not to tell 13th about this. She says that she’s scared that 13th’s reputation would be scarred by hanging out with her. 14th says that 13th wouldn’t care about his reputation anyway.
By the way, I love Wu Lu’s hair ornaments. They’re so pretty!!!! I also like her hairstyle better than the ones they wear in the palace.

13th hears about what 9th did to Wu Lu. 10th, 14th, Ruo Xi, and 9th are hanging out when 13th comes storming in. He’s about to beat up 9th, but 14th and Ruo Xi hold him back. 10th holds 9th back and quickly takes him away. ANGRY 13TH! AHHH! I LOVE THE DRAMA!
13th, 14th, and Ruo Xi have tea together. 14th advises 13th not to let this matter blow out of proportion. Ruo Xi is furious at 9th for doing such a thing to Wu Lu. 14th scolds her for being so rash in talking against a prince. 13th, ever the cool one, says to tell 9th that if he does anything to Wu Lu or any other girls, he’ll kill him no matter what.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the friendship between 13th, 14th, and Ruo Xi!!! 13th stalks off, leaving 14th with Ruo Xi. 14th rants to Ruo Xi about how he’s in a fix because of defending Wu Lu. And then he says AGAIN that Ruo Xi should just marry 8th, because he won’t oppress her.

Yu Tan tells Ruo Xi that Crown Prince has asked the Emperor to grant him a marriage to Ruo Xi. 14th, who’s with them at the time, immediately storms out and finds 8th to do damage control. Ruo Xi is depressed by her possible fate, and confides in Yu Tan.

(Ruo Xi’s thought) “I know everybody’s ending, but I don’t know my ending.”
(talking to Yu Tan) “4th, 14th, and 8th prince. All of them reminded me before…but I didn’t realize that someone hankered after me. Now it’s too late to regret.”

And time for 4th/Ruo Xi! Ruo Xi comes down with a fever. 4th comes in the room as Ruo Xi wakes up. She weakly asks for some water. 4th quickly gives her some water, and then Ruo Xi turns to see that it’s 4th prince! 4th says that she still might have a chance since the emperor hasn’t answered Crown Prince’s request yet. He helps Ruo Xi lay back down. AWWW. I love how careful he is with her.
Right then, the song “Three Inches of Heaven” starts playing. The lyrics are SO PERFECT in this scene!!! And this is my favorite BBJX OST song, so this makes the scene even better!

(lyrics) “I stopped here and dare not move on.”

4th turns to leave, but then Ruo Xi grabs his arm, and looks at him imploringly.

(lyrics) “So that the tragedy cannot continue. The following night, you wrote our parting.”

“You..I told you about it a few years back but you didn’t listen to my advice. Now it finally happened, what’s the point in holding me now?”

Ruo Xi lets go of his hand, but then 4th grabs her wrist and envelops her hands with his. (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH)

(lyrics) “We walked too fast on this path. We hang on to an unrealistic desire. We can’t wait to return and admire. Mulan fragrance cannot hide the sorrows.”

4th tucks Ruo Xi in bed, and kneels down beside her.

“Now I can’t give you any promise because I don’t know if I can do it…But don’t worry. I won’t leave you, not caring.”
(lyrics) “Don’t sigh about what’s happening and the ray of hope that we can’t see.”

4th turns to leave AGAIN, and then Ruo Xi grabs his hand. AHHHHHH. She starts to sob silently, and 4th wipes away her tears and holds her hand. He gives her this look of “It’s gonna be ok” and leaves. Please excuse me while I go rewatch this scene for the 10th time. I’m not even kidding.

14th comes to visit Ruo Xi. He tells her she needs to delay the marriage request for 10 days. Ruo Xi thanks him, and 14th (echoing 4th) says that he already told her to choose her own husband. Now it’s too late! Like we all said, 14th, like we all said. And then for his recurring line, “It’s much better for you to marry 8th prince right?” T_T Ruo Xi thanks 14th as he leaves, and he simply raises his hand goodbye.
Um, am I the only one that likes 14th more now? As in, before I didn’t really like him that much in the beginning, but now he’s likable? And he even has his cool moments, like this scene just now?

“She got into this problem, but so many people are helping her.” -words of wisdom from 14th

Omg, I love 8th and his other wife, Ming Hui. Ming Hui is stealing the show by far from Ruo Lan. Ming Hui will always support 8th in whatever he does, and can’t bear to see him unhappy. Perhaps she didn’t love him at the beginning of their arranged marriage, (this hasn’t been clarified) but she’s put that behind her. She’s devoted her all to him, and recognizes that their marriage is a partnership, not just an inconvenience.

Ming Hui: “As long as you can stop worrying about it, I’ll do my best to help you despite the difficulty. It’s painful for me to see you like this. maybe, this is what a married couple is all about. We shall suffer together. I never regretted my decision to get married to you.”
8th: “No one can ever replace your position.”

Ruo Xi is determined to stay sick. Outside, she dumps her medicine and gets ready to pour freezing cold water all over herself. Yu Tan tries to stop her, but Ruo Xi tells her this is what she must do to delay her marriage. Yu Tan is conflicted, but let’s go of her hand. Ruo Xi dumps water on her head multiple times, as Yu Tan painfully watches. OMG. This is actually one of the saddest scenes so far. The music is so sad :’(

Back in court, a corruption case is reopened. Ruo Xi realizes that this is 8th’s way of targeting Crown Prince, and thus delaying the marriage request. Crown Prince is linked to the corruption. The main point of this scene is that 4th and 8th have a VERY intense stare off. 8th can be pretty scary sometimes.

Ruo Xi opens 4th’s present. It’s a magnolia shaped hair pin. She wears it with a smile. (She’s gonna fall for him, I know it.) Ruo Xi bumps into 4th, and she quickly takes off the hairpin. 4th asks why she took it off, and Ruo Xi makes up an excuse. And then she asks her to marry him. WHAT?

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 6

“I just want to find someone who truly loves and treasures me. Not a someone a man plays with in his free time. I’m a person, not a thing. I don’t want to be passed around.”

Ruo Xi rejects 8th’s offer to become his wife. But she doesn’t want to become the Emperor’s concubine either. So, 8th uses all his connections to try to get Ruo Xi out of the concubine selections.
[insert rant here] I understand that Ruo Xi simply wants to find true love, and not be treated as a possession. But in her situation, 8th, 10th, and 13th are as good as you can get. I think it’d be better to just go with one of the princes rather than risk being stuck in the palace as the emperor’s concubine. In JPLH, Qing Chuan + emperor wasn’t even considered. Hopefully Ruo Xi will completely avoid getting together with the emperor. o_o I bet they’re only taking this route to show the palace life and the beautiful Forbidden City.

Ruo Xi enters the palace as a servant. If she doesn’t become a concubine, she has to stay a servant from age 20 to 24. Serve 4 years as a servant, be the emperors concubine, or be 8th bro’s wife? HMMMM.
[insert another rant here] 8th bro wants to marry Ruo Xi. It’s been CONFIRMED by his own words. I’m still kinda weirded out by this pair. What ever happened to 4th? Anyway, at least 8th understands that if Ruo Xi marries him, it should be her own choice, not forced upon her.

4th bro & 14th bro have a great bromance, as they both appeal to the Empress to take Ruo Xi off the concubine selection list. I love the bromance in BBJX. Ruo Xi ends up being the Emperor’s personal tea servant. She quickly becomes the Head Tea Servant, and has two other subordinate servants. lol, leave it to them to be incredibly serious about tea. 8th tells her he’ll try to get her out of the palace when he gets the chance. I think Ruo Xi’s responses to 8th bro’s advances are rather ambiguous. I mean..he’s holding her hand and such, promising to get her out of the palace…for what (*hint hint* HE WANTS THE WEDDING BELLS TO RING!) I think Ruo Xi thinks that since she already rejected him, 8th got the marriage idea out of his head. Nope, not at all.
4TH BRO SCENE!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!

Ruo Xi asked 14th to find out 4th’s likes and dislikes. 4th, being the super smart guy he is, figures out that 14th was just asking for Ruo Xi. So he confronts her and tells her she might as well ask all these questions directly. Ruo Xi obliges and quizzes him on what he likes/hates.

“What’s your favorite fruit? Grapes.” *they both awkwardly look at 4th’s purple clothes* ROFL.
“What weather do you hate most? Scorching hot days.”

“That’s because you’re an ice block.”
“What are you most scared of? Crying women.” OMG I LOVE THAT ONE. 4th says all this with a completely straight face.

Um, I’m on 4th’s side now. He’s just so much funnier than 8th. And I like his overall composure–he’s calm, collected, and super observant/smart. He always looks like he’s evaluating the situation in his mind. I really need more 4th bro scenes!!

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 7-10 (Caps)

Ruo Xi attempts to avoid 4th bro, but fails. 13th points out that 4th was the one who interceded for her and got her off the concubine list. Ruo Xi maintains a safe distance from him, carefully giving him her thanks. This scene is SO beautiful with the autumn leaves, omg.

We get another stunning shot as the camera zooms in on Ruo Xi & 8th bro. Basically, every 8th bro/Ruo Xi scene feels the same, even though they are filmed beautifully. 4th bro scenes are much more memorable to me.

Ruo Xi gets to go on an expedition with all the royal family. It’s basically like a family trip. 13th meets a Mongolian princess who’s great at dancing and horseback riding. They become friends and there’s some hints at a possible romance. Ruo Xi gains the Emperor’s favor by designing intricate tea cups, one for each prince. 4th gets a magnolia design, because magnolias are his favorite flowers. D’AWWW.

Ruo Xi asks for horseback riding lessons from 13th. But both nights he’s supposed to teach her, 4th bro shows up in his place. Ruo Xi makes up excuses to try and get 4th bro to leave, but fails. 4th bro teachers her how to ride under a full moon.
My only qualms about this scene was that it was so obviously not real. The grass was obviously animated, and you could tell there was a backdrop. It would’ve been better if they actually filmed out in a field.

The second night, Ruo Xi tries to leave, but 4th bro grabs her arm and pulls her in for a hug. AND THEN HE KISSES HER.
OMG. GO 4TH BRO!!!!!!
Ruo Xi struggles and bites him. 4th bro is undeterred, and says he thought that’s what she wanted. You can’t blame 4th bro, I mean..she always avoids him and even gave him a magnolia tea cup. Ruo Xi is kinda sending him mixed signals here, no wonder 4th is confused. I was surprised when he took the initiative. And he’s so frank about it!

Ruo Xi is infuriated by 4th bro’s bold move. Even 13th assumes that she likes 4th bro. She gets mad at him, and he cutely does the ‘Ok’ sign with his hand. OMG, I love 13th!!!! Ruo Xi wonders why she’s getting misunderstood by everyone. She tells herself she has to be careful not to mess up, as she silently sheds a tear.

Ruo Xi is warming up to 8th bro. She has an obvious crush on him now. 8th bro sends her letters and presents frequently. I’m still weirded out by 8th bro hitting on his wife’s sister. And shouldn’t Ruo Xi be a bit weirded out too? I mean, she’s from the future where guys don’t have multiple wives. O_O

Time for another pretty 4th/Ruo Xi scene!!! 4th starts walking toward Ruo Xi. She backs up and almost trips, but 4th CATCHES HER WITH ONE ARM. He says that he doesn’t regret kissing her. AHHH!!!!! I just love 4th bro scenes so much.
Crown Prince is demoted by the Emperor. Suddenly all the princes are trying to gain the title of Crown Prince. Ruo Xi is determined not to let history happen, because she knows that 8th bro will get demoted. But she fails, and 8th bro gets demoted anyway.
By episode 10, Ruo Xi has been in the past for three years. Uh, what? I felt like it’s only been a year at the most. This really puts things into perspective, showing just how long Ruo Xi has been friends with 13th, and how long she’s been serving in the palace. By now, she’s adjusted so much to being Ruo Xi that it’s natural to her. I think they could’ve focused a bit more on her inner turmoil as she tries to come to terms with being in the past.

OMG I love 4th bro. 4th and 8th visit Ruo Xi to drink tea. 4th bro broods over how he got blamed by 14th & his mom for not speaking up on 14th’s behalf. Ruo Xi demurely hands 4th bro a fragrant tea thingy, (I really have no clue what it is) and 4th bro takes it from her WITH THIS LOOK IN HIS EYES. OMG. The piano song during that moment is so perfect!!! It’s so bittersweet, just like this scene.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 5

Ming Yu is actually LIKABLE for once, as she shows off her amazing horse riding skills. I give her credit for that. Then she taunts Ruo Xi & Ruo Lan, hinting that they should have great skills too. 10th tries to keep Ming Yu in line, but the poor guy is obviously overpowered by her. Poor poor 10th. He seems to have accepted his marriage though. Ming Yu paired with 10th is actually kinda cute, when she’s not being a brat. Ruo Lan steps up to the challenge and displays her horse riding skills. 8th looks on in pride.

Here’s where I ship 8th and Ruo Lan SO MUCH. I mean, they’re already married, they might as well end up together.
8th gets to talk to Ruo Lan alone, and begs her to forgive and forget. He doesn’t want her to be so unhappy and cold toward him. He wants to do all he can to make her happy. But, Ruo Lan continues to carefully treat him with reserved respect. Which gets me wondering what 8th bro did so wrong that Ruo Lan has been avoiding him all these years.

8th: “Ruo Lan, what do I have to do to give you happiness? We’re already married. Will the rest of our lives be like this? We can’t even count as acquaintances!”
Ruo Lan: “If Bei’li is willing, I’m willing to be so.”
8th: “Ruo Lan, I’m unwilling! I would rather you be angry at me or hate me. I will try my best to repay you.”

Poor poor 8th. Unrequited love always hurts.
Later on, we find out the back story–Ruo Lan loved the guy who taught her how to horseback ride, but she was forced into the marriage with 8th. 8th/Emperor sent the guy to the frontlines of the battlefield, so he died. Ruo Lan miscarried her baby when she heard about his death. So to this day she can’t forget him.
OH. SO IT’S THE UNREQUITED LOVE CARD!!! COMBINED with the forced-unhappy-marriage card!

Now that Ruo Xi can’t be besties with 10th, she’s moved on to 13th. 13th is my favorite prince aside from 10th. Why doesn’t Ruo Xi just marry 13th? 13th is fascinated by the concept of ‘democracy’ which he heard from Ruo Xi’s drunken talk. He speculates that in a different society, people could all be equal, chase their own happiness, and be free from the emperor’s control. Um, if 13th isn’t compatible with Ruo Xi, I don’t know who is.
She even gets him to do the PEACE SIGN with her. They are so cute together!! WHY AREN’T THEY THE OTP?!?!? They talk about self-determination and revolutionary ideas! They’re ‘ancient people with modern ideas’!

13th and Ruo Xi become drinking buddies, along with a very intelligent courtesan. Ruo Xi, 13th, and the courtesan are just about the most progressive thinkers out there so far. 13th can’t bear to see Ruo Xi suffocated by the palace life if she gets chosen by the Emperor. The courtesan comments that it’s a pity she was born in this era.

Erm, these screenshots are simply because this scene was so PRETTY, especially the middle right pic, with the blurred beads for bokeh. And the bottom two pics–I love the angle!!! Anyway, 8th bro is still kinda confusing, because he randomly gives Ruo Xi an expensive bracelet. Er….

“Dad, Mom, I miss you so much. How can I not miss you? If I stay here any longer, I’m afraid I’ll forget who I am. Heavens, just who am I? Am I Ruo Xi or Zhang Xiao?”

On New Year’s Eve, Ruo Xi realizes that she even forgot to pray for her parents. (a custom on New Year’s) She broods over how she’s scared of forgetting herself. I enjoyed this little bit of self-reflection because it’s bound to come up when you’ve switched bodies, thus switching identities. How can she stay true to who she really is, rather than just adapting to the role of Ruo Xi?
8th randomly appears and comforts her. Um, ok? Aside from how beautiful the scenes are with 8th/Ruo Xi, I don’t really get what’s up with his random appearances and gestures of kindness. I’m a bit confused. So far though, I think 8th should just treat Ruo Xi like a daughter or a niece. After all, she is his sister-in-law. Aside from the amazingly shippy moments, I’m not really shipping him with Ruo Xi. Because she and 13th are meant to be, although they’re not the OTP.

Episode 3

Time for Ruo Xi to enter the Forbidden City! All the princes and family celebrate a special summer festival. Here’s where I feel terribly for 10th. The Emperor notes that he’s ‘of marriageable age’…and in a moment of STUPIDITY, decides to pair 10th with MING YU. THE LOOK ON POOR 10TH’S FACE. And right at that moment, literally ALL the other princes looked down and GRIMACED for poor 10th. (All these subtle details are actually humorous to me) I FEEL SO SORRY FOR 10TH.

Ruo Xi broods over 10th’s horrible engagement, and begins to realize that life in the Forbidden City isn’t glamorous at all.

Why? Isn’t he a prince? Doesn’t he have a high status? Why is it that someone with such a high status has lost something so precious? Freedom? Is this the fate of everyone in the Forbidden City?
“Why is it that our fates can be decided by a single word from the Emperor? Why was I brought here…The education I’ve received taught me that my destiny is in my own hands. Now I’m suddenly told that everything is up to fate. Resign myself to fate? I’ll never do that.”

Understandably, Ruo Xi is now conflicted over what her own fate will be. If she never returns the the present, will she be stuck in an unhappy marriage like 10th? Of course, she wants to decide her own destiny, but now she has to come to terms with the controlling Emperor who has everyone in the palm of his hands. I like this conflict a lot, as it shows that Ruo Xi is now beginning to understand the rules of this society more and more.
Episode 4

Ruo Xi mopes around, as she ponders the woes of life and 10th’s cruel fate. In actuality, she’s just angry that the emperor has the power to control her life. She bitterly tells 8th and 13th that this marriage is being forced on 10th by a certain SOMEONE. Oh no. You DO NOT speak against the emperor. 8th bro is infuriated and harshly warns her never to say that again. 13th explains that the Emperor is the authority, and is never to be questioned. I think Ruo Xi is being more self-centered in her moping–she’s not mourning the fate of 10th, but rather, her own fate.

OMG 10TH IS KILLING ME. He’s been drinking away his troubles the past couple days. Ruo Xi goes to comfort him. OMG the disappointed look in 10th’s eyes when Ruo Xi flatly REJECTS HIM.

“Are you willing to be my Ce-fujin? I’ll treat you well! I promise..”
“I’m not willing.”
“I know. Even if I ask you to be my Di-fujin, you wouldn’t agree…Now, it’s even more impossible.”

“Ruo Xi, have you ever liked me?”

“I did.”

AND THEN 10TH REACHES FOR HER HAND…BUT SHE DRAWS AWAY…AND HE STOPS. OMG. This is the saddest hand-holding-attempt scene ever. AND THE MUSIC IS SO PERFECT.

“Actually, I’m still happy. The truth is, these past two days, I’ve wanted to ask you face to face, but was scared to hear your answer. Scared it’d be an answer I didn’t want. So I didn’t ask.”

I love 10th so much. He says that he’s never been good at studying, and will never catch up to his amazing brothers. Only 8th bro treats him well. Everyone else talks about him behind his back. Ruo Xi assures him that she’s happy when she’s with him.
[insert rant here] I really felt the heartache in this scene. I feel SO BAD for 10th. Yes, Ruo Xi rejected him gracefully, and I understand why she did–she only views him as her good friend. BUT. BUT. I think she has so many other things to consider. IF she’s stuck here for the rest of her life, would she want to risk an unhappy arranged marriage with some other random guy? Or would she rather spend her whole life with her bestie? And you know 10th is completely earnest! But, you gotta remember the “decide your own destiny” theme, which I think will be a biggie in BBJX. I’m still really disappointed, and I shall mourn 10th’s fate.

So, now that the drama with 10th is done, I guess the directors decided to give us a 8th/Ruo Xi shippy moment. AKA the most beautiful scene yet. Ruo Xi goes out walking in the snow. We get a beautiful shot of the icicles on the tree, and Ruo Xi catching a snowflake in her hand. So pretty!!! Suddenly 8th bro starts walking next to Ruo Xi. They plod on in the snow.

Ruo Xi trips, and 8th quickly catches her. There’s a moment of tension between the two.

She pulls away her hand.

AND THEN HE HOLDS HER HAND. AND WALKS WITH HER THE ENTIRE WAY…HOLDING HER HAND. OMG. This amazingly executed shippy moment is just not possible in the modern day. This is the whole she-trips-and-he-catches-her scene DONE RIGHT.
[insert rant here] OK. Am I the only one a little freaked out by 8th making a move on Ruo Xi? I mean, she’s his wife’s younger sister! Yeah, in those times, things were different (concubines, first & second wives, etc.) but STILL.

10th, understandably, doesn’t want to marry Ming Yu. He accuses 8th bro, saying that he doesn’t even love his first wife.

“Even if you have all the riches in the world, sacrifices must be made…Love between a man and a woman is but a lovely dream. It is not everlasting.”

10th bravely puts on his hat in preparation for the wedding. 10th, I applaud your courage.

This episode is on a roll. 13th gets his scene too. I LOVE 13TH! He takes Ruo Xi out to go drinking. In the woods. He’s loaded his horse with bottles of alcohol and is determined to drink them ALL. Ruo Xi isn’t pleased because she has a bad impression of 13th. I, on the other hand, would be thrilled.
Ruo Xi quickly gets drunk and spills the beans to 13th that she’s from the future. 13th isn’t affected by the alcohol at all.

8th bro and 10th bro invite Ruo Xi to go riding with them. The whole way, 10th bro and Ruo Xi bicker. And…8th bro just sits there with his eyes closed. The entire time. ROFL, this made me crack up so much even though I’m not sure it’s intentional humor.
Ruo Xi is eager to ride the horse…but she doesn’t know how to horseback ride. 10th teases her for not knowing how to even after she acted like a know-it-all. She makes him hold the reins and lead the horse. LOL these two are so adorable together.
Ruo Xi tries to hint to Jie Jie that she ought to go out with 8th bro more often. (note that 8th bro is Jie Jie’s husband) Jie Jie keeps quiet, but accidentally pricks her finger. There’s definitely more to her marriage angst than meets the eye. Qiao Hui (Ruo Xi’s maid) ambiguously says that sometimes in a marriage, the two people are certainly fated to be together, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy together. *hint hint unhappy arranged marriage*

Um. I really love 4th bro. Ruo Xi sees him, and just about dies inside as she tries to pretend she didn’t see him and walk away. Buuuut he calls her out on it, observing that she doesn’t seem to want to see him. She lies that that’s not true. He promptly says that he thinks she doesn’t want him to talk about why she wanted to seek death.

4th bro: “Seeking for death, but looking for life. Since you don’t want to say it, then fine.”
Ruo Xi: “…you’re walking around in a dream, once you’re in a dream, you want to wake up, but you can’t. What would you do?”
4th bro: “6 words. Make the best you can out of it. Understand? Strong wood breaks easily.”
Me: *gawks, in awe of 4th bro*

As Ruo Xi ponders his words, I ponder his words also. Make the best you can out of it. Ruo Xi takes his words to heart and decides to cheer herself up.

Everyone is preparing for 10th’s bday celebration. He asks casually if Jie Jie is going to organize his celebration. The other brothers ask if he wants Ruo Xi to plan his bday party. 10th attempts to deny it, BUT YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE. HE IS SO ADORABLE THAT WAY.

Ruo Xi finds out that Jie Jie isn’t highly esteemed by the servants because 8th bro doesn’t visit her often. So they think she’s not favored by him. *recalls all the drama in JPLH where the different wives battled over the emperor’s affections*
Unfortunately, we cannot escape from all the wifey-drama in JPLH. 8th bro’s other wife is in competition with Jie Jie. Her bratty sister, Ming Yu, ATTEMPTS to bully Ruo Xi, but epically fails because Ruo Xi doesn’t know who she is, and frankly doesn’t care who she is. Ruo Xi has a faint memory of her pushing her down the stairs. OHOHO, so that’s why she fell!!!
Ruo Xi makes 10th spit out everything he knows about the wife that bullies Jie Jie. He admits that she and her daughter are quite the scheming pair. They even dare to insult him! Ruo Xi just goes, oh. 10th: HEY! To get even with the brat, Ruo Xi sets a huge dog loose, right near Ming Yu. I LOVE HER GUTS. Poor 10th bro just gets caught up in the middle of it all. Ruo Xi sarcastically says “Little animal, no humanity. Don’t blame 10th prince!” and bursts out laughing.

Bu Bu Jing Xin: Ep 1

Gorgeous scenery!!!

So, Ruo Xi is at the palace of 8th bro. At first she doesn’t believe she’s in the past, but she quickly realizes that this is reality. She finds out that she (or, the real princess) fell down the stairs and got a head injury. So, even though she’s disoriented, has a different personality, questions everything, the maid thinks she’s simply lost her memory.
Ruo Xi puts two and two together, and concludes that to get back to the present, she must fall down from the stairs again. But she decides not to when her maid begs her not to.

IT’S 8TH PRINCE!!

Ruo Xi’s other genius plan? Get run over by a horse. That’ll get you back to the present. I admire her guts, but she made the wrong decision to stand in front of 4th bro and 13th bro’s horses. Because they are gentlemanly, chivalrous PRINCES who are able to stop their horses from trampling over her. 13th bro immediately gets off his horse to help Ruo Xi…

AND OMG. 13TH BRO FOR THE WIN.

4th bro has this strong, composed air about him. He may not seem as openly concerned as 13th bro, but he is quite observant and wise. He knows that Ruo Xi purposely tried to get run over, and he warns her not to try it again.

….And then there’s 10th bro. I think this picture pretty much sums it up. He is hilarious. He stares at Ruo Xi while he’s eating. She smirks at him, and surprises him completely. But then she downs a lot of rice..and starts choking on her food, and he smirks AT HER. I rather love these two.

Zhang Xiao (Cecilia Liu), a young woman from the 21st century, suffers a near-fatal accident that sends her back in time to the Qing Dynasty during the Kangxi Emperor's (Damian Lau) reign. She finds herself trapped in the body of one of her previous incarnations: Ma'ertai Ruoxi, the teenage daughter of a Manchu general. In this new timeline she has an elder sister, Ruolan (Annie Liu), who is a concubine of the Kangxi Emperor's eighth son, Yinsi (Kevin Cheng). Ruoxi initially tries to return to the future, but she soon adjusts to life in this era. She meets some of Kangxi's other sons, including the fourth prince Yinzhen (Nicky Wu), tenth prince Yin'e (Ye Zuxin), and fourteenth prince Yinti (Lin Gengxin). She also forges a close friendship with the thirteenth prince, Yinxiang (Yuan Hong).
During Ruoxi's stay in Yinsi's house, Yinsi falls in love with her. She initially rejects him but later agrees to marry him if he gives up competing for the succession to the throne. Since she is from the future, Ruoxi is aware that Yinsi's ambition will ultimately lead to his death in prison after Yinzhen becomes emperor.
After breaking up with Yinsi, Ruoxi's interaction with Yinzhen changes her unfavorable opinion of him, and she unwittingly falls in love with him. Meanwhile, Yinsi and his supporters, acting on Ruoxi's advice, frame Yinzhen for plotting against the crown prince Yinreng (Zhang Lei). Yinxiang steps forward to take responsibility and is ultimately sentenced to house arrest. After this incident, Yinsi realizes that Ruoxi is now romantically involved with Yinzhen. Yinreng is deposed after his criminal ways are exposed and is imprisoned for life. Kangxi then begins showing preference for Yinti and offers Ruoxi as a concubine to him. However, Ruoxi boldly defies the emperor's order, and as a penalty she is demoted to the laundry department.
Kangxi eventually dies of illness, and with military support from Longkodo (Zhao Jialin) and Nian Gengyao (Xing Hanqing), Yinzhen stages a coup and seizes the throne from Yinti to become the Yongzheng Emperor. Yinzhen then releases Yinxiang from custody and makes Ruoxi his consort. Ruoxi's happiness, however, is marred by Yinzhen's paranoia and his ruthless persecution of Yinsi and his followers. She is often caught between the rivaling factions of Yinzhen and Yinsi.
When Yinsi's wife (Shi Xiaoqun) tells Ruoxi that Yinsi acted against Yinzhen years ago because of her advice based on the knowledge of the future, she is shocked, and her despair causes her to miscarry Yinzhen's child and is unable to conceive again. Enraged, Yinzhen blames Yinsi and his wife, issuing an edict forcing them to divorce, which leads her to commit suicide. Ruoxi fears Yinzhen's punitive actions against his brothers and confesses the truth to him and Yinxiang. Yinzhen is stunned when he understands why Yinsi plotted against him and starts treating Ruoxi coldly. Ruoxi is unable to withstand the mental stress and asks Yinti to help her leave the palace. Yinsi knows that Yinzhen will not allow Ruoxi to leave and decides to intervene. He discloses details of his past romance with Ruoxi, and an angered Yinzhen eventually agrees to let Ruoxi and Yinti leave the Forbidden City.
Despite Yinti's excellent care, Ruoxi's emotional anguish deeply affects her health, and she begs him to send a letter to Yinzhen, requesting to see the emperor one last time before she dies. However, a misunderstanding between Yinzhen and Yinti causes the letter to be thrown aside unread. Ruoxi struggles to stay alive, but after three days she concludes that Yinzhen's absence confirms that his love for her has ended, and she dies. When news of Ruoxi's death reaches Yinzhen, he rushes to Yinti's house, regretting his actions after learning that Ruoxi still loved him.
Back in 2011, Zhang Xiao regains consciousness in a hospital and is informed that she had been in a coma for weeks. She wonders if her experiences in the past were real or imaginary. After recovering, Zhang researches the Qing Dynasty era, only to find that history remains on its proper course, and there are no records on Ma'ertai Ruoxi. However, she later visits a museum where she recognizes some Qing Dynasty-era artifacts and sees a lady in a Kangxi Emperor portrait that resembles her. Meanwhile, a man who looks like Yinzhen also visits the exhibition and encounters Zhang Xiao but does not recognize her. Zhang is unable to control her tears as he walks away.

Cecilia Liu as Zhang Xiao, a nondescript white-collar worker from the 21st century (from the year 2011). After suffering a near-fatal accident, she has an out-of-body experience and travels back in time, becoming stranded in the 18th century for 21 years (1704-1725) in the body of a previous incarnation, Ma'ertai Ruoxi, the daughter of an 18th century Manchu aristocrat. Despite her modern outlook, she is forced to adapt to life in the 18th century. Throughout the series, she is romantically linked with three of the Kangxi Emperor's sons: Yinzhen, Yinsi, and Yinti. Ruoxi's romantic entanglement with the princes are complicated by her knowledge of their future political struggles and feuds. She is initially unaware of a predestination paradox by which her actions would ultimately shape the outcome of history. Near the end of the series, Ruoxi dies after the revelation of her inadvertent role of the princes' feud, causing Zhang Xiao to reawaken after several weeks in a coma.

Nicky Wu as Yinzhen, the fourth prince. He is destined to succeed his father as the Yongzheng Emperor and is Ma'ertai Ruoxi's true love. Nicky Wu also plays a mysterious 21st century man who meets Zhang Xiao in a museum weeks after she returns to her own time; he is speculated to be a present-day incarnation of Yinzhen.

Kevin Cheng as Yinsi, the eighth prince. He is Ruoxi's first love interest and Yinzhen's rival for her affection as well as in politics.

BBJX is a period drama (Qing Dynasty) with plot that revolves around history (with a dash of fiction), romance, conflict and politics.
Zhang Xiao, a young woman from the 21st century, suffers a traffic collision after work that sends her back in time to the Qing Dynasty during the Kangxi Emperor's reign (in the year 1704). She finds herself trapped in the body of a young daughter of a Manchu aristocrat, Ma'ertai Ruoxi, a younger sister of Ma'ertai Ruolan, who is a concubine of the emperor's eighth son, Yinsi. After breaking up with Yinsi, Ruoxi's falls in love with Yinzhen. Meanwhile, Yinsi and his supporters, acting on Ruoxi's advice, frame Yinzhen for plotting against the crown prince Yinreng. Yinxiang takes responsibility and is sentenced to house arrest. After this incident, Yinsi realizes that Ruoxi is romantically involved with Yinzhen. Yinreng is deposed for his criminal ways and imprisoned. Kangxi then begins showing preference for Yinti and offers Ruoxi as a concubine to him. However, Ruoxi boldly defies the emperor's order and is demoted to the laundry.
Kangxi eventually dies of illness and with military support from Longkodo and Nian Gengyao; Yinzhen stages a coup and seizes the throne from Yinti to become the Yongzheng Emperor. Yinzhen then releases Yinxiang from custody and starts a romantic relationship with Ruoxi. In an attempt to keep the secret that Yinti was named heir before their father's demise, Yinzhen places him under house arrest. Ruoxi is often caught between the rival factions.
The ninth son, Yintang, manipulates Yinsi's wife Gororo Minghui into telling Ruoxi that Yinsi acted against Yinzhen years earlier. Ruoxi is shocked by this revelation, and in addition, remembering Yinzhen told her once that he initially had no desire to become an emperor, she realizes her actions are inadvertently shaping events (see predestination paradox). Her despair causes her to miscarry and become critically ill. Enraged, Yinzhen blames Yinsi and his wife, issuing an edict forcing them to divorce, which leads the latter to commit suicide. Remorseful of the consequences, Ruoxi confesses the truth to Yinzhen and Yinxiang, leading Yinzhen to treat her coldly. Ruoxi is unable to withstand the mental stress and asks Yinti to help her leave the palace. Yinsi knows that Yinzhen will not allow Ruoxi to leave and decides to intervene. He discloses details of his past romance and an angered Yinzhen eventually agrees to let Ruoxi and Yinti leave.
Ruoxi's emotional anguish affects her health. She begs Yinti to send a letter to Yinzhen, requesting to see the emperor one last time before she dies. However, a misunderstanding causes the letter to be thrown aside unread. After three days, Ruoxi concludes that Yinzhen's absence confirms that his love for her has ended, and she dies (in the year 1725 at the age 35). When news of Ruoxi's death reaches Yinzhen, he rushes to Yinti's house, regretting his actions after learning that Ruoxi still loved him.
Blaming Yinsi and Yintang for Ruoxi’s death, Yinzhen charged his half-brothers for ambiguous offenses and banished them from the imperial household. Both would eventually die in 1726, as Rouxi predicted.

These are the selected 5 characters that were the core-actors that made the storyline flow so beautifully. Throughout all events and circumstances, the princes grew up with Ruoxi and would protect her from the harms of the palace, and they all loved her. As romantic as it is, I find it "troublesome" for a girl to be loved by almost everybody. Emperor Kangxi loved her (as a daughter), 8th Prince loved her, and she returned his love, but as fate twist and turned, she find herself in love with 4th Prince. The notorious Crown Prince also requested her hand for marriage, and at the end 14th Prince found out that he loved her too!

It's not the love story that enthralls me, but the emotions conveyed by their love, especially 8th Prince & 4th Prince. They convey their emotions by the body language, and eyes. On the surface 8th Prince seems humble and nice, but every actions has a secret intention. While 4th Prince seems cold and furious, but deep down, there's a warmth to his heart.

A tinge of comedic moments also enlightens up the plot. The casual relationship between Ruoxi and 10th Prince are really funny. And also the BFF relationship she has with 13th Prince was delightful to watch too!

With the captivating storyline, i cannot stop my self but to finish up 10 episodes at one go! The plot keeps you asking for more, and you felt as though you are living in the era too!

It's really a beautiful drama, with nice costumes and scenery. I heard that BBJX 2 (based on modern story) will be produced, and they are retaining the same casts!

Why you should invest your EPF in Unit Trusts

THE money in your EPF account is the money that will feed you and your family from the day you retire until you pass on. It will be good if your children give you monthly allowances when you retire, but it may be prudent to plan your own retirement financial security.

Your EPF money, therefore, deserves your serious attention. There are unit trust fund promoters who will approach you to draw it out to invest in their EPF-approved unit trust funds.

The question is: Should you invest for potentially higher returns (by exposing your EPF money to higher risks) or should you just be content with the EPF dividend rate?

Firstly, let’s look at why EPF introduced such a scheme. According to the EPF website, the “EPF Member’s Investment Withdrawal scheme allows you to withdraw part of your savings in Account 1 for investments to increase your retirement fund to support your life after retirement.”

This means that you are given the opportunity to make your EPF money work harder for you.

The second reason is actually the most important. Inflation erodes your purchasing power. Over the last five years, EPF has distributed an average of 5.4% dividend annually while the inflation rate averaged 2.7%.

Thus you should make the best use of the withdrawal scheme allowed by EPF to ensure that you preserve the purchasing power of your EPF money in future.

Thirdly, you should let the power of compounding work for you.

Albert Einstein famously said: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it.”

Thus you should let some of your EPF money compound at a higher rate of return.

Even a small positive difference in annual return can make a big difference over time. To give you a better idea of the power of compounding, let’s use the Rule of 72.

If your money earns 5% a year, it will double in 14.4 years. If it earns 7% pa, it will double in 10.28 years. For 9% pa return, your money doubles in eight years. If your return is 11% pa, it doubles in 6.55 years. If you earn 13% a year, your money doubles in just 5.54 years. (To calculate the number of years for your money to double, divide 72 by your rate of return.)

But before you start picking up your handphone to call your unit trust agent or if any overzealous unit trust agent shows you this article to convince you that you should invest with him or her, please finish reading the rest of this article.

Let me give you a word of caution first. To invest your EPF money successfully in unit trusts, you must follow the advice below as investing in any unit trust fund carries investment risk, meaning the price of unit may go up as well as down.

To help you decide whether using your EPF money to invest in unit trust is for you, I bring up these two points to help you.

Firstly, by withdrawing your EPF money and investing in unit trust, it will not earn you any EPF dividend. Add in the upfront sales charge by the fund house of 3%. This is the opportunity cost that you need to consider.

Secondly, there is the investment risk of unit trust funds that you must consider. There was a report in www.thestar.com.my way back in Aug 8, 2006 that reads: “The Government, alarmed over the more than half billion ringgit losses reported from investments in unit trusts involving Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors, has directed the EPF to impose stricter conditions on such investments.”

The same report also mentioned: “A Malay daily reported over the weekend that EPF contributors who invested an estimated RM600mil in unit trust schemes had suffered losses.”

Having said that, it is still a good idea to invest your EPF money in unit trust schemes to earn potentially higher returns. However, you must ensure the following few points are adhered to when you invest.

You must have an investment method to start with. The dollar cost averaging (DCA) is a good one to start but make sure you stick with it for years.

Those who withdraw a few times and then see if they make money will not benefit from cost averaging.

There was a case of an investor who religiously withdrew his EPF money every three months to invest in unit trusts in the last 11 years, starting in year 2000.

When he reviewed his investment in August this year due to the recent market turmoil, he was glad that his unit trust investment using his EPF yielded 6.95% compounded return.

This case shows that you must stick with a method that invests at regular intervals consistently over a considerable period to be successful in making your EPF money grow and increase your retirement fund.

This is because a regular investing method such as DCA can reduce the investment risk by diversifying the timing risk of investing.

How about investing your EPF money using value averaging (VA) regular investing method? If you have read my article two weeks ago in this column, you will know why VA is the smarter version of DCA.

By using the reconstructed data from the same case I mentioned above, the back testing done using value averaging on an EPF-approved Malaysian small cap fund is really interesting.

The VA method yielded annual compounded return of 13.21% over the similar period.

The result is consistent with the research done by Professor Paul Marshall, who concludes that value averaging does show a performance advantage over dollar-cost averaging, without incurring additional risk.

Value averaging investors sleep soundly at night. You deserve a good night sleep too. Start using VA.

Troubling people

I often sit and wonder how life would be if and when I grow old. I just hope and pray I will never trouble my children or the people around me too much with too many demands and sorts.
I do so hate having seen dramas in all forms and demands by parents towards children or sick people in the past and present.
I have also encountered people who suffer an illness (even a mortal illness) in silence and never making a fuss or troubling their loved ones unneccessarily until the end. These are the people I truly respect and wish to emulate.
Why would one want to put people surrounding them in a flurry or stressed out because of their incessant demands I have no idea, except for perhaps a selfish need to make people suffer along with them. Victims of such people would only barely tolerate them until such time tolerance turns to resentment and eventually hatred .
I pray and I wish I will never do that to my love ones and family.....

Palace 2 summary... continuation part 2

....Lian Er continues sending meal to her new friend, slightly suspicious of his 'free-ness' but refusing to accept it when he tries to tell her that he's the Emperor. One day Su Gong Gong notices unknown eunuches following her and scared them away then warns her against going out and meeting people. She then tells him that she has a friend who is starving and she has promised to deliver food for him and Su Gong Gong agrees to send the food for her. Su Gong Gong goes off to deliver to food but decides against it when he notices the emperor wearing plain clothes as the only person in the garden. Su Gong Gong and Li Wei then plan to force the Emperor to make Lian Er a "little master". Su Gong Gong lied to Lian Er saying he was too late in sending the food but heard of an eunuch being punished in the Ci Ning palace where he knew the Emperor would be that night. Lian Er innocently goes along and send food to the Emperor. However the eunuches sent to trail Lian Er lock them in. Lian Er panicks thinking they were doom while her "friend" is just cool. He then tells her nothing will happen to her as long as she is with him. And he tells her to marry him. She scolds him but finally agreed not knowing his trap. An excited Qian Hui Ren drags the empress and the empress dowager to Ci Ning palace in the hopes of catching Lian Er red handed with a palace guard so she can have Lian Er put to death.

when the door opens, Lian Er is worried and immediately kneels down. Qian Gui Ren is excited until the "adulterer" she calls voices out. The Emperor then reveals himself and orders Qian Gui Ren punished - Lian Er is wide eyed with shock - unless Concubine Xi begs for forgiveness on her part. Lian Er then asks the Emperor to forgive Qian Gui Ren and he asks her if she is asking as Concubine Xi or Lian Er. In a small voice she agrees to be Concubine Xi. Duke Guo and Jia Jia is stunned to find out that Lian Er has jumped ranks and immediately has been conferred a concubine. The Emperor and Empress Dowager then holds a grand ceremony for Lian Er. The Empress however feels betrayed and sad, and it did not help when Qian Gui Ren took the opportunity to poison her mind saying all Lian Er did was for herself. On the night of her conferral/wedding.. the emperor went to Lian Er's palace but was turned away. He accepted with good grace , promising that she will come to him willingly soon but soon begins to question her devotion and heart...

Qian Gui Ren (evil woman-don't know why the Emperor haven't gotten rid of her yet) cuts some wood at the pavilion where the Empress and Lian Er are playing/practising opera and Empreas Dowager is watching. When the Emperor turna up, she shouts out, shocking Lian Er and the Empress and they fell. The Empress' fall was broken by the Emperor who caught her. However in her shock, the Empress Dowager suffered from heart attack..... (to be continued)

Palace 2 summary

I have been hooked on Chinese Drama series now for a while. And now am watching the Palace 2 or Gong 2 over Astro Zhi Zhun...

I love it even though the plot is somewhat quirky... sorry if I skip some parts but will summarise the story the best I can....

The story begins with Quan Ming looking for the 8th Prince and The Emperor (one of the few good looking emperors played by Mickey He) fighting for her. However , Quan Ming choses the 8th Prince...

She then wakes up to modern life and her loving husband in the 21st century as a scriptwriter and actress and vows to give the emperor a different ending...

when she was at the site of the movie, she meets easy going and fun loving Lian Er who gives her a lollypop. She immediately thinks of her husband and that the day is their anniversary too and leaves the set/site and insist her role be taken by Lian Er.

Lian Er then finds herself in the Qing empire(not sure if that is the word....) and a daughter of an impoverished official who is hoping to be a minister but unable to do so because he cannot afford to bribe the officials in charge of selections.

Frustrated, Lian Er takes it into her own hands to submit the application again with a huge pearl she found. Duke Guo was in charge of the new selection and refused point blank as he thought it was bribery.

Lian Er then marched up to his residence and insisted on seeing him. He then told her if she can catch up with him on horseback she will be granted an audience. She chases after him but her horse tripped and she flew from the horse back but Duke Guo quickly caught her, breaking her fall. He fell in love with her then but pushed it aside as he wanted to use her to gain the Dowager Empress title from the Emperor for his mother. He wanted her to be a concubine to the Emperor and so she could plead on his behalf.

Her father eventually got the minister's post but died.

However the time she spent in Duke Guo's house resulted in them getting closer and she too fell in love with him. He decided to scrap the idea of sending her to the palace and marry her instead. Promising to select her as his wife during his selection before the new wannabe concubines are sent to the Emperor. However, something happened to a close family friend and his tutor and so to save the life of that man, he had to marry the tutor's daughter Jia Jia who was also a candidate for the concubine selection. That left Lian Er shocked and also sad. She then resigned herself to her new life making a new friend in Yu Shu.

Duke Guo got married to Jia Jia but refused to spend the night or much time with her. However with her sincerity, understanding, kindness and dedication she slowly won him over. Bit he could not forget Lian Er.

Meanwhile, in the imperial palace, Lian Er makes friends and enemies. Her friends included a scholar who got jnto the palace as an imperial guard name Li Wei and Su Pei Sheang/Su Gong Gong...She had treated Su Gong Gong with care and respect even when he was down and beated when he got evicted from his post after his previous mistress fell from grace.

Her enemy was a fellow candidate who manage to be the first selected to be a gui ren by manupulating her cousin wan Pin and also Yin Pin who were at war with each other. Qian Gui Ren is a very evil and manipulative woman. She harmed her own niece and set the blame on her cousin and she tried countless times to eliminate both Yu Shu and Lian Er afrer identifying them as threats. However no one could pin point her as yet.

Su Pei Sheang and Li Wei made a pact to try to help Lian Er get the Emperor's attention and protect her the best they can.It included Li Wei getting beaten up because he was saving Lian Er from being discovered in a plot to run away.

Lian Er also manage to become Wan Pin's companion and upon her death, the empress' companion.

However on the night she tried to escape and failed, she came upon the Emperor stripped of his robes pacing his courtyard. She quickly took it upon herself to 'rescue' him before the Emperor discovers him ans punishes him. The amused Emperor insisted he was the Emperor and she shushed him saying that she knew the Emperor was always wearing a dragon robe and he would get into trouble if people heard them. The Emperor, sick and tired of all the drama and pretension in his life of officials, concubines and so on finds her refreshing,sincere and interesting and decides to play along with her.

They become friends. He allows her the liberty to scold him, pull him to 'steal' food and let her think of him as some eunuch name Xiao Xen Zi being punished and who is always hungry. She then brings him food in the evening. He enjoys her company. And she promises to be his family.

In between Lian Er continues trying to help the Empress get the Emperor's attention, not knowing Xiao Xen Zi is actually the Emperor. Qian Gui Ren tries to get Lian Er into more trouble. And Duke Guo having seen Lian Er kidnaps her for a while and explains himself and plots to run away with her leaving Jia Jia whom he still did not love.

However, a pregnant Jia Jia learns of his plan and puts the money he had given her into his bag and tries to commit suicide. Duke Guo found the money and feeling bad, he return to return it to her just in time to see Jia Jia trying to hang herself. Then the nanny told him she was pregnant and he promised to stay by Jia Jia and their child, betraying Lian Er a second time. She returns to the Imperial Castle and found Xiao Xen zi aka the Emperor who was already frustrated from waiting for her in the garden and cried on his shoulder but refused to tell him the whole story. He comforts her and flies her around the lake.

Qian Gui Ren hears that Lian Er is seeing someone and thinks it's a great idea to trap her. She orders some eunuchs to then follow Lian Er and trap her. One night , while Lian Er was with the Emperor, they were attacked and pushed into an abandoned well. A delighted Qian Gui Ren quickly fetched the Empress and went to check. However, the Emperor had already uses his martial art skills and climbed out of the well with Lian Er.

Qian Gui Ren was furious and also punished by the Empress. She swore to get Lian Er........

I always tend to have mix feelings when it comes to Eid Fitri. Many people look forward to it... but not me.. This year was not much different. And then it occurred to me why it was this way... I had to sacrifice my time with my eldest girl. Since she is staying with me, she can't wait to go back to Penang to spend this momentous time with her father and grandmother there... and she barely spare me a thought .

It is times like this I feel morose. I feel abandoned and my own children do not even spare me a thought. At least my two older ones, not that I blame them.

Then I think again and it is then I take the time to truly appreciate my husband and my precious youngest daughter's presence in my life .

My youngest girl, Anne who is just 8 is truly heaven sent and my treasure. She fills the gap in my life and continuously surprises me and is a great joy and comfort.

She has dried my eyes when I cried, hugged and kissed me when I was sad, asked me if I was ok when she hears me cry out and she has tucked me to sleep at times when I was so knackered out and exhausted. Things I never get to experience with my older children who seem more self absorbed and just look to us when it is for their basic needs and for monetary needs....

It is then I realise how wonderful God is and what a wonderful gift he has given me. I don't know how little Anne will be like another 10 years from now.. but for now.. Let me enjoy her tender administration, love and caring and let me dote on her too.....

I was most surprised when a couple of friends started congratulating me out of the blue recently. I did not expect to win as no body called me up.

I have won prizes from the Star newspaper but they would normally call ahead to inform us about it. But, not this round.

However it sure was a pleasant surprise as I has wished and always wanted to visit the beautiful island of Pangkor Laut again...

So now I won my deserving husband a Sea star watch as well as an escapade to the glorious island inclusive of meals and a spa treatment. .. yaaayyy .. can't wait to go.. possibly aftet Raya...
