When Lydia told me this was a good film my first thought was, "Another horse racing movie?" I have watched a few of those: Black Beauty, The Black Stallion, both My Friend Flicka's, National Velvet, The Man From Snowy River, The Horse Whisperer, Hildalgo, Danny, All the Pretty Horses, quite a few Roy Rogers and other old westerns. The main horse in the movie always wins in some way. I thought I'd seen enough.

But I was wrong. Today, I decided to bite the bullet so I could write home and tell my sisters that I'd watched Secretariat. From the first minute of the movie, I was into the story. Have I ever mentioned how much I love movies set in the 1960's? :-) This is indeed a horse movie but you cannot help but admire the characters in this story. The strength. The sheer will to do what was right, even if those closest to you don't agree with it.

Synopsis:
When Penny Chenery received the phone call of her mother's death, she had no idea how much her life was about to change. When she and her family (husband and four children) arrived at the farm for the funeral, she finds the house crowded with well wishers. She tearfully reunites with her brother, friends and neighbors and with Mrs. Ham. The latter is her father's old secretary who is now taking care of her employer as his mind deteriorates from Dementia. Mrs. Ham sends her back to her father's office, where he now sits alone. As Penny talks to him, memories begin presenting themselves to her. Happy memories of better days when she was a child and her father's mind was sound. Reveling in her love for horses and a desire to know everything, he had taught her what he knew about horses and the horse breeding business.

At the funeral, a few people who were very influential in her father's life spoke to her and she was heartened that there were still some friends on whom she could count on. The next day, she came face to face with the trainer. She had heard some rumors and had done some searching. She discovered that the man had tried to pull off a fast one on her dad. She told him what she knew and fired him. When her brother found out, he was incensed. He wanted to sell the farm and he knew they wouldn't get a good price unless they had a good training program. To his dismay, Penny told him that she didn't want to sell, insisting that she would see to the farm. So began the years of many airplane flights back and forth from "home" to "back home" to the farm in Virginia.

Her father had made two smart choices when it came to horses. One: he had known that there is just as much value in a good mare as in the stallion, therefore had invested in mares. Secondly, he had made a deal with Ogden Phipps. Mr. Phipps' best stallion stallion Bold Ruler was bred to two of the Chenery's best mares Something Royal and Hasty Matilda. When it came time for the mares to foal, the two owners would flip a coin to see who got which colt. Bold Ruler was a fast horse but he did not hold up over long distances. Because of Hasty Matilda's young age, she seemed like the better choice. But Penny had done her homework once again and had discovered that Something Royal's bloodlines bore the heritage of stamina and endurance. So when it came time to flip the coin, she was pleased when Ogden Phipps chose the foal of Hasty Matilda.

So was born to Meadow Farms the horse Secretariat, Big Red to those who loved him, who would one day... well, I don't want to give it away! But this movie is about Penny Chenery and her horse as much as it is about Secretariat's rise to fame. Because without Penny stubbornness, willingness to endure hardship and her gentle but "hard as nails" personality, the world would have never been inspired by this story of greatness.

What I Liked:
1: The story was well told and ran smoothly. It was very believable.
2: The acting was great. I really felt like I knew the characters.
3: They didn't change the story too much for the original. I appreciate a film mostly based on fact.
4: Penny's strength was amazing but even more amazing, she never lost her femininity. People would mistake her femininity for weakness and she would set them right.
5: You appreciate the hardships she goes through to follow the dream she had for her family, the farm and Big Red. You sympathize with her tears and hurt. You laugh with her. You get angry with her. You feel despair with her.
6: Lucien was so, so adorable. I laughed so hard. John Malkovich is always so strange and brilliant.
7: The humor was quite well done.

Things to Know:
1: Brief mild language.
2: Watch out for the very strong lady. She is inspiring and ladies might find themselves emulating her.

I was talking to a student the other day about some music and Mary Poppins came up in our conversation. My student beamed at the mention of the name, then admitted that she had never seen the movie. Why is Mary Poppins so magical? Why do people automatically smile when they hear of her? I was very young when I first saw Mary Poppins. Imagine a little girl at her Grandma's house (my family didn't own a t.v.), sitting on the floor, looking up at the screen, mesmerized by the magic of the story, lovely Mary Poppins, handsome jolly Bert, stern Mr Banks, flustered Mrs. Banks and the two rascals Jane and Michael. That was me. Now imagine many years, and miles, later: a young woman is curled up on the couch in her new home watching Mary Poppins. The music still makes me want to dance with the chimney sweeps, Mr. Banks is annoying, Julie Andrews is gorgeous, the jokes are corny, Dick van Dyke is a handsome devil and the children are little rascals. Oh yes! No matter where we are, who we are, what we are: The magic lives on in our hearts.

Synopsis

Jane and Michael Banks have gone through no less than six nannies in four months. When their parents and their hired help discover the departure of the latest -- Katie Nanna, everyone is irate. Poor Jane and Michael are sent upstairs to be dressed for bed while their father decides that his wife simply does not possess wisdom when it comes to assessing character. He dictates an advertisement to the Times requesting someone who is strict, stern and who will mold his children into obedience. He is the head of his home and his home will be punctual, wife dutifully submissive and children models of good behavior.

But the children have also decided their parents might not know what they need either so they write a list and, trembling, give it to their father. The list requests the services of a fun, caring nanny who will be their friend. Mr. Banks sees it as nonsense, tears it up and throws it in the fire place. What he doesn't see are the pieces of paper swirling up the chimney until the last one has disappeared from view.

Not many hours later, they are just finishing their breakfast when Ellen the maid announces there are two dozen stern and strict looking nannies waiting outside. Mr. Banks replies that he said interviews would begin at 8 o' clock and he will begin at 8 o' clock, not a minute sooner. As the children dolefully watch from their nursery window upstairs, they notice the wind seems to have come up. In fact, it comes up so quickly that the poor black clad, stern and strict nannies seem to be getting blown off their feet, umbrellas catching in the wind... until there is not a single one left.

Then, they see her. She is also dressed in black, also with an umbrella, also carrying a bag. But there is one difference, she floats in from the sky and lands neatly on their doorstep. When she raps on the door, it is exactly 8 o' clock. She says her name is Mary Poppins and she can fill the specifications dictated in the advertisement. She holds up a paper which looks like it has been ripped up and put back together again. and begins reading the children's advertisement, word for word.

Mr. Banks, for once, is at a loss for words.

What I Liked

1: The story in this movie is dramatic and exaggerated but in doing so, the script writers cover a lot of ground. We all know people like Mr. Banks and Mrs. Banks. Perhaps we are Jane or Michael... or Ellen. Maybe we're even Mary Poppins. I appreciate how much I could relate to this story.

2: It is very clear why Mrs. Banks chooses to be a suffragette. It is because of what happens at home. Mr. Banks does not treat her or any woman as an equal. She is his wife, not his friend. She is to be there for him, submissively telling him that he is right in all things. In the end, we see the difference in their relationship. She is his beloved and someone he confides in. The change in her is beautiful.

3: Mary Poppins fights dirty. Lol! But she really does! I appreciate how she and Bert worke together to help Mr. Banks realize what he is doing to his life and family.

4: Bert and Mary Poppins have a big of unrequited romance going on here. I know P. L. Travers (author of Mary Poppins books) didn't want it but, hey, on screen chemistry between Dick van Dyke and Mary Poppins totally happened. Flirtation, meaningful looks and tenderness just oozes off of them while they're on their date in the chalk drawing. :-) I really appreciated that they didn't even hold hands (except in the most decorous way).

5: The music and dancing in this film is amazing. Hands down, one of the best musicals ever created. All of the songs catch your attention. Usually there is at least one dud song in a musical (Oklahoma has about 10 of them) and I was listening for it closely. There were none. And I mean, not a single one. All of them had my heart and feet pitter-pattering.

6: The acting was very good. Facial expressions, tone, lines... it was all excellent.

7: Even after 47 years, Mary Poppins is still a very popular film. I had to search long and hard for the copy of the movie I now own. Like The Sound of Music or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, it never comes down in price. All ages appreciate the story, the music, the acting and the filmography. All see the treasure of the films made in the Golden Era.

My Thoughts

I discovered that the Mary Poppins had her beginnings in the book world. The world first heard of her existence when P. L. Travers (1899 - 1996) published Mary Poppins in 1934. In the book, she is "stern, vain and usually cross but has a magical touch..." The reminder of the series spanned 7 books and years 1935 - 1988.

The books became widely popular. So popular in fact, that in 1938 Walt Disney tried to purchase the film rights from P. L. Travers. She told him to go away. She did not think a film would do justice to her story and definitely didn't want it to be animated. But Walt Disney was a patient and persistent man. Finally, in 1961 he succeeded and began the process of making the magical film that was we all know. Guess what? There is a the tiniest bit of animation threaded into it... and guess what again? The world of Bert's art has always been my favorite part of the movie. :-) Rest assured, P. L. Travers demanded and got script approval rights. (Fortunately for us some things, such as flirtatious looks between Mary Poppins and Bert, didn't require a script...)

Imagine a world without the talents and creativity expressed in the film (1964), the books (1938 - 1988) and the Broadway production (2004). I am thankful for people like P. L. Travers, Walt Disney, Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke who allowed their creativity and talents to make the world a better place for everyone who knows of them.

Hanna -- 2011

There weren’t many brilliant films produced this year. All season, Jesse and I have waited for the story that would capture our attention. There were only a couple that made us step back and say, “That was amazing.” Hanna was one of them.

It is Finland in the late Fall. The snow is thick on the ground and filtering down through the trees. We see a lone reindeer foraging for moss or whatever he can find. Then we see Hanna. Her pale face is wrapped against the cold. All we see are her eyes, wary, watchful, calm. For an instant, she is there, another instant, gone. The deer raises its head and smells the air. Suddenly, Hanna steps from behind her cover and her arrow flies true. The animal leaps into the air and runs, trying to escape its fate and the agony ripping at him from his insides.

Hannah follows swiftly, silently; her lithe body just a shadow through the snow as she keeps on his trail. Her aim had been good so it is not long before she has caught him. She circles his body, now lying helplessly in an open meadow, his eyes dully following her movements. She pulls out a gun, aims and remarks quietly, “I just missed your heart.”

Her hands and arms are soon bloody as she guts the carcass and makes ready for bringing the meat back home. The daylight will soon be waning and in the bitter cold of the year’s lateness, she does not want to be caught away from home in the dusk.

“You’re dead.”

The male voice comes calmly from behind her, no hint of rebuke, just fact. Hanna leaps to her feet and spins around, knife slashing at the figure. He easily overcomes her and lands her on her back. He turns and leaves her, lying spread eagle beside the reindeer carcass.

Hanna has been trained for one purpose alone: assassin. Since the age of two years, she has been stretched beyond her endurance, taught fighting and self preservation skills. Being an assassin is like breathing for Hanna. But it isn't enough. She wants the outside world. She longs for the sights, people and music. Not only that. Now, at the age of 16 she deems herself ready for her first assignment.

So, let the games begin. It is a fight to the death.

What I liked:

1: The story was told well. There is mystery, action and well developed characters.

2: The filming was very stylized. The uniqueness was a tribute to Hanna’s character and her life.

3: There was an interesting reference to God and spirituality that leaves the viewer asking questions about their own beliefs.

4: There was realism to the tale. Erik tried to prepare Hanna for the outside world. He was partly victorious. But he could not fully know or predict what was going to happen, therefore could not prepare her enough. Hanna’s secluded upbringing and inexperienced youth are portrayed very well on screen.

5: This film draws the viewer into it. You feel Hanna’s pain and joy… her exploration and unknowing selfishness. You feel the horror and fear or resigned realizations of the victims. You feel Marissa’s triumph and frustration and puzzlement. You feel the love Erik has for Hanna.

6: The purpose of Hanna is on several levels, I believe. Sometimes, we take forgranted the comforts of our lifestyles. We become trapped in boxes of our own making. We forget there is a bigger world.

7: I loved the humor. It popped up in the most unexpected places.

Things To Be Aware Of:

1: Some language.

2: One scene of sensuality and implied nudity.

3: Disturbing scenes of violence and worse, scenes of implied violence.

My introduction to Shakespeare was this film. I do not know enough about Shakespeare to recommend this film on any other grounds than the fact that I found it enjoyable. Other than Shakespeare, this movie is wonderful.

It is a tale of two love stories and how they came about. It would seem that Shakespeare loved the unconventional. ;-)

Summary:
Once upon a time in the land of Shakespeare's mind there were identical twins.Viola and Sebastian were their names and their hearts and minds were entwined deeply. When their ship sinks during a storm, they become separated and each think the other is lost. When Viola and some of her fellow shipmates wash ashore in Illyria, her heart is so burdened and heavy with grief that she feels she cannot live.

What saved her was coming upon a funeral. The sight of the beautiful Countess Olivia weeping over the grave of a dearly departed brother wrung the heart of our poor Viola, who's own grief and loss mirrored the Lady's. Her only thought was of how she could ease the suffering of this other sister who stood so broken and helpless with agony.

Then, she heard the rumors: Duke Orsino. He adored Countess Olivia with his heart, mind and soul. Had it been his heart alone in question, the two would have been married that very day. But the Countess Olivia was quite determined in her refusal of him. When Viola heard this, her mind was set in it's course. She would dress as her brother and serve the Duke. She would become his trusted friend and confident. She would be the go-between in the courtship of the Duke and Countess Olivia. She would bring her lady much joy and comfort. Viola had wonderful intentions.

What I Liked:
1: The story, of course. :-) It's beautiful and hilarious and so Shakespeare.
2: The actors. They are all wonderful and true to their characters. So alive.
3: The humor is very laughable.
4: The music. Ben Kingsley was amazing.
5: The psychology of the film was well done and left the viewer scrambling to keep up.
6: The spirit of the film is dark and troubled... and it remains this way through the entire film, with little splashes of light. Well done!

Things to Know:
1: When Viola is making her transformation, she dresses partly on screen.
2: Some sensuality. It never goes beyond kissing but there are a couple implications.
3: Beware of statues in the garden... and someone reads Amour in the evening.
4: Cruelties done towards Malvolio just for the sake of cruelty. (Alternately horrifying and hilarious.)
5: This film is intense; full of twists and surprises. Watch with your mind open.
6: There is drinking and quite a lot of drunkenness.
7: As with all media, view with discretion. :-)

I had such a difficult time researching... so, when I found these reviews, I felt I needed to include them. They give interesting insight.

Do I recommend this film? :-) It is intense from the first moments. It grasps you and throws you into a world. It's dark and whimsical; realistic and magical; humorous and sad; hopeless and hope filled. Yes, I recommend it.

I met Stéphanie Labbé for the first time at Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party, where she was hired as an instructor.

You know what? I wrote that sentence, then sat here, staring blankly at my screen. I'm trying to find words that describe Stéphanie and her music. Lol. She is an amazing person. There just isn't a way I can tell you who she is... you have to meet her.

I'll never forget the night of her concert at camp. It was fiddle like I've never heard it before. It was out of this world; it was electrifying; it was pulsing; it was definitely French. She got three standing ovations in fifteen minutes.

But it wasn't just the music that caught the crowd. It was Stéphanie.

She's from Quebec. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Maple Leaf Country , that's French Canada. Do they speak a lot of English over there? From those I've met, I'd say negative. In her concert, Stéphanie was up on stage, trying to speak to a very Saskatchewan crowd (which means we may speak Hungarian, Ukrainian or Polish but mostly, we're illiterate when it comes to French) in English. Her command of the language wasn't that great at the time but she tried. :-) She had everyone shrieking with laughter more times than once and you felt that she laughed the hardest.

But again, I bring you attention to her music! It is so alive. It brings a person onto their feet without thought or reason. We all know that recordings are rarely as good as live. However, there are a few artists I really enjoy and I listen to their CD's over and over. One of them is Stéphanie Labbé. Her music is a gift.

From the first moment I heard that Jerry Bruckheimer had produced a movie from the concept of the game "Prince of Persia", I wanted to see it. A few days later, I was walking out of a store with it in my hand.

I really enjoyed it. In fact, I could watch it again! Yes, I do see the faults. It is only a mirrored surface of what could have been epic. It gives you just a little taste of the truth and some mixed up ideas about the rest. None the less, I must admit to loving it; I had delightful shivers all the way through it. I love Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones and Star Wars, too. What can I say? ;-)

Nizam: What a glorious mess we are.

Summary:
Legend had slowly weakened over the centuries until it was only a whisper in the wind; secret from the world and the evils that dwelt in it. The truth lay in the bosom of a sacred city and would have stayed, safely sheltered... But there was evil. There was greed and selfishness and corrupt hearts. There was death trapped in a mind and the embers of it glowed and smoldered until the captive was ready to give up his soul.

Persia was the most powerful empire in the world. In fact, the world had become Persian. All bowed, all paid homage. All acknowledged it's power.... Or should we say almost all?

King Sharaman was a ruler for such a Kingdom. He was wise and dispassionate. His heart was for Persia, his sons and his family. His wisdom had shown itself in many forms but the strangest of these had been in regards to the little beggar he had taken off the streets.

"A great man would have stopped what he knew what was wrong, no matter who was ordering it."

Dastan was not a typical Prince. Probably because he wasn't of loyal blood. Oh yes, he was cocky and irritating and knew everything. But he knew how to fight and he knew how to pick his friends. He knew about the bonds of brotherhood. And he was about to learn about being a real man.

The story begins as the three sons of Sharaman are debating whether to attack the sacred city of Alamut. A spy had intercepted weapons being transported from Alamut to Persia's enemies. Prince Tus was the oldest and Crown Prince, therefore, in command. Orders from his father had been to not attack Alamut and he did not wish to disregard them. Garsiv, the second son who was brave and fierce, declared that such orders would surely change with turn of events. Dastan was not sure.

The matter was decided when Nizam, the trusted brother of the King, quietly told them this was for the good of Persia. Their hearts turned to his bidding. Because of their trust in him, their minds firmly closed to the murmur of their hearts.

It didn't hurt that rumor had it that Princess Tamina, the ruler of Alamut, was drop dead gorgeous.

Tamina: Must feel wonderful winning such claim for destroying such an innocent city.

Dastan: Oh, a pleasure to meet you too, Princess.

What I Liked:
1: The bond of family and brotherhood is expressed very beautifully in this story.
2: Some very excellent truths were taught.
3: I think this is the first time I've actually seen on screen a decent portrayal of falling in love. They chose to love each other.
4: Pretty awesome acting.
5: Love, love, love the score. It was amazing.
6: The humor was well placed.
Sheir Amar: Tch, secret government killing activity! That's why I don't pay taxes!
7: The princess is rarely ill-dressed. I could show this film to my brothers. Yay!!
8: I have always loved watching people escape using their own feet, hands and general athleticism. ;-) (One of the reason I enjoyed Mall Cop)
9: Although there are many faults to this film, I believe it's worth watching. I learned from it and I was inspired.
10: The film was fairly clean. Only a couple things I thought could have been thrown out.

What I Didn't Like:
1: I do get caught up in these things, I admit. But they bother me, so: the snakes rattled before biting and there were no rattles on the ends of said snakes' tails. And Jake Gyllenhaal decided that he liked Harrison Ford so much he needed to smile like him. So annoying. :-P
2: Many details were missing regarding culture and some bloopers about language, etc. This was definitely a Hollywood film that expects you to be carried away with the action.
3: The fact that this film had the potential of being an epic, a masterpiece... and it isn't. I have a little understanding of how much work and effort and time that goes into a movie, so I can't criticize too much. I just wish they had been able to make this film into what it could have been.
4: Some sensuality that was so not needed. It didn't help the story at all. For the record, it was basically a glance and a question that aren't particularly harmful but it ruined the moment that I had been enjoying.

Things to Know:
1: Some magic.
2: Some Eastern religious views were referred to and promoted.
3: The entire story was based on a Noah's ark legend. Interesting.

As with all films, watch with discernment. If you enjoy desert, sheiks, princes, poison, lots of action, snakes, really bad bad guys, good guys who aren't perfect, beautiful princesses, clean romance and ostriches, this is for you. :-)

Before you read the summary, let me admit something: I am not a big fan of Matt Damon. I've seen him in "Geronimo" (in which, he was pretty good but still... not my favorite actor), "The Good Old Boys", "Saving Private Ryan" (I love that movie but Tom Hanks definitely ranked higher than Matt Damon ;-)), "All the Pretty Horses" and "Jersey Girl". However, when I saw this film, I finally understood why people really like his movies. It was like he finally found his genre or character. Amazing acting. If you like espionage/action/thriller, this is the movie for you.

Summary:
There was a storm raging the evening they found him floating in the ocean. It was amazing he was still breathing. He had been shot twice in the back before being dumped overboard and left for dead. The crew of the small fishing boat pulled him out of the Mediterranean and laid him out on the table. The captain was skilled in small surgery and began his work. First, he removed the bullets. Then, something attracted his attention. What was this? Figuring the man wouldn't survive anyway, he made a small slit in the fellow's hip and found something he didn't expect: a tiny laser projector. Mystified, he turns it on and finds it displays the numbers of a safety deposit box in Zurich. It isn't everyone who has a laser projector in his hip. The Captain begins to wonder who exactly is laying on his table?

When the man regains consciousness, he finds out that he is... just that. The man on the table. He cannot remember who he is. Whatever had happened to him before they found him in the sea now locks part of his memory in psychogenic amnesia. But over the course of the next weeks, he does find some interesting things about himself. He can speak several languages, fluently. And he knows things... like how fast and far he could run at all elevations before his hands begin shaking; who in the room is most likely to cause trouble; where a gun might be hidden; where all the cars in a parking lot came from and what their make is; where the best, safest exits are in the building. But he cannot remember where he came from, his name, or why someone would shoot him and toss him overboard into the ocean.

Regardless of his handicap, he is strong and young and a willing worker. The Captain grows fond of him and when they dock at Imperia (Italy) he tucks some money into the young man's hand. Neither have any idea of what awaits him. The question is only of the will to resist. Can he refuse what has been his mind, heart and soul?

What I Liked:
1: Matt Damon was brilliant in this film.
2: The entire plot. I found it very unique and well told. The psychology of it is rich and made me think.
3: Realistic quality of the story was 100%.
4: The romance. Franke Potente was the perfect choice for the Marie character. To quote a friend, the love scene was ' was the most tastefully done love scene I have ever watched'. And I agree. :-)
5: The language was really toned down for a PG-13 movie. I appreciated that.
6: It kept me on the edge of my seat but didn't tire me out. There were rest points amongst the action. :-)
7: Lots of action!! ;-)
8: I actually got chills from this movie. It's frightening the first time you watch it.
9: The best car chases I've ever seen on a film. Seriously.

Things to Know:
1: Brief strong language and lots of abuses of Deity. I actually hadn't even noticed while watching it but while doing my back work (I try to make sure I'm being accurate ;-)), I discover this is a common complaint about the film... And rightfully so. However, it isn't unrealistic for them to use language like this. So... give and take.
2: A love scene that involves kissing and her removing his shirt (camera swings away)... also, (this could be listed in my dislikes) they cut her hair and she's only wearing her underclothing. You can easily cover the screen, however.
3: People get hurt, killed, murdered, etc, etc. with Bourne doing lots of killing. He's not a typical hero.

As I continue watching Hayao Miyazaki's creations, I enjoy each one better than the last. Howl's Moving Castle was an amazing journey for me. It made me laugh and almost cry and captured my attention until the end. There is something so tangible about this film. Something so tender, sweet and plucky. Sure, it could be a kid's film. Sure, it's funny (it's got Billy Crystal in it, for crying out loud! Of course it's funny!). But it's more than a kid's film. There is a depth and a sweetness that some of his other films did not attain. You sense a different essence... more vivid colors...

Sofie: Alright, Calcifer, let's get cookin'.
Calcifer: I don't cook! I'm a scary, powerful fire demon!
Sofie: :puts frying pan on fire:
Calcifer: Here's another curse for you -- may all your bacon burn.

Summary:
It seems that all my recent film reviews have begun with a young girl who is more often than not in dire straits. I hold true to the pattern... once again. ;-) Hehe.

Quiet, responsible Sofie Hatter is trying to keep her late father's hat shop alive. The work load is heavy and the responsibility is still heavier. Her vain and fluttering mother is always off to other parts of the world while her well meaning sister gave up on hats and began pursuing her own dreams at a bakery. So it is only Sofie who keeps the shop alive. And because her entire life is wrapped up in it, friends are few and far between... she is often left alone, but she doesn't mind this. Her heart is content with the solitude.

There is a legend in this city: A dreadful young wizard named Howl who lives in an enormous moving castle and eats the hearts of beautiful, innocent young girls. Sometimes, if you're very lucky, you catch a glimpse of the castle in the distance. But only for a moment. Sofie ponders what it would be like to meet the mysterious Howl. What does he look like? Is he as wicked as they say he is? She knows she would never be in danger with him because she is not beautiful. Everyone knows that Sophie is the plain one of the family!

One day, the entire city is in an uproar with festivities before the soldiers go off to the war. It had been brewing like an evil pot for some time and finally come to a reality with the abduction of the Prince. Sophie had intended to keep working until dusk but she suddenly feels a desire to go visit her sister at the bakery. With her hat firmly in place, she locks the door to the shop and sets out through the alleys, trying avoid the crowds. Unfortunately, there were a few other people in the alleys, as well. Two soldiers accost her and would not let her pass. Her fear makes them laugh and they begin to crowd her, insisting they must take her out for tea. Suddenly, a young stranger is standing beside her with his arms around her. Let's just say the soldiers were no longer an issue. ;-)

The adventure was far from over, however. Further dangers present themselves when black beings appear from around the cobblestones and out of the walls and begin following them. With his arms still around her, the young man walks Sophie rapidly down one alleyway, then another. The followers grow in number and more aggressive. But the hero of this story has more than one trick up his sleeve. Just as all seems to be lost, they are flying up into the sky, far above the cobblestones and roofs... leaving their attackers behind. They land on the balcony of the bakery and, with an apology for her trouble, he vanishes. Sophie can't help but think she has seen him for the last time.

After visiting with her sister, she makes her way back home through the dusk. After slipping through the door of the shop, she locks it behind her and prepares to go to bed for the night. But even before she has her hat on the stand, the door opens and in sails a very large lady. She looks at Sophie and remarks how tacky the shop is. Sophie tells her firmly that they are closed for the night. The woman laughs and says the girl has pluck to stand up to the witch of the waste. She does leave but she leaves an old woman behind her. An old woman who cannot speak of the curse cast upon her.

What I Liked:
1: The score was so beautiful. I could listen to it all day long... it's on my list of soundtracks to buy.
2: The story took me on an incredible journey of growth. I learned so much from this story. I felt I was Sophie. There was so much about her that is me.
3: There were so many great voice actors on this film. They did a really good job.
4: Even though there are witches and wizards and magic every 'turn of the page', it's not portrayed in a positive light. It seems very realistic. I guess the theme could be: with great gifts comes great burdens.
5: The love story. It was so beautiful. Actually, that was what almost made me shed some tears. :-)
6: The fact that there is a little rascal of a boy. Hayao loves children. You can sense it in all his films.
7: I appreciate how there were very few 'bad guys'. More often than not, those we consider bad are actually the hurt children inside us..
8: Watching Howl turn into a man.
9: The humor was laughable. ;-)

Sofie: Why is the Witch of the Waste trying to hunt you down?
Howl: She was once quite beautiful, so I decided to pursue her, then I realized she wasn't, so then, as usual, I ran away.

What I Didn't Like:
1: The entire base of the story is around witches and wizards. I understand that without the base, there is no story. But there it is and I am sticking to my opinion. :-)

Do I recommend it? Yes. I hope you learn as much from it as I did. :-)

Dazzling. This movie is eye candy. Although set in Edwardian London, this definitely has the 1960's flavor.The music is gorgeous. The acting is absolutely phenomenal. But what is even more amazing is the singing.

For those of you who haven't watched it, I hardly want to tell you anything about this film because I don't want to ruin it for you. For those of you who watched it, I want to express my opinions of this film because I adore it. How am I to walk this line? :-)

Mrs. Higgins: However did you learn good manners with my son around?
Eliza Doolittle: It was very difficult. I should never have known how ladies and gentlemen really behaved, if it hadn't been for Colnel Pickering. He always showed what he thought and felt about me as if I were something better than a common flower girl. You see, Mrs. Higgins, apart from the things one can pick up, the difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated. I shall always be a common flower girl to Professor Higgins, because he always treats me like a common flower girl, and always will. But I know that I shall always be a lady to Colonel Pickering, because he always treats me like a lady, and always will.

Summary:

When Eliza Doolittle first met Henry Higgins, she despised him. When Henry Higgins first met Eliza Doolittle, he thought she wasn't human. But fate threw them together into an adventure of their lives and changed them forever.

Eliza Doolittle met Master Higgins through her work. She was a flower seller from the slums and found herself face to face with him after someone warned her he was taking notes when she spoke. Fearing he was an officer of the law, she wept unashamedly at his feet, begging him for a little understanding. He laughed at her and assured her he was no policeman, only a professor interested in speech. He could train her to speak properly, he claimed, and pass her off as a Duchess with the proper intonation of words.

Well, Eliza wasn't interested in being the Duchess but she did want to work in a flower shop. It was her dearest dream (next to the room somewhere with a fire and chocolate and someone dear and tender to rest his head in her lap). But with her Lisson Grove Lingo, it was out of the question. So, humbling herself, Eliza marched to Henry Higgins vast abode and demanded he teach her how to speak proper. She would pay him of course.

Henry Higgins was surprised at her boldness and laughed maliciously. A shilling a lesson! Of all the gall. As if he would even dream of teaching her of all people. Go back the streets, he told her. She would never be any better than the trash she was. Being a human being, such insults are unbearable and Eliza marched out of the room vowing to never lay eyes on the man again.

Had it not been for some words of remonstration and some chocolate, Eliza would have lived her days out in the slum she was born in... unloved, uneducated, unfulfilled...

What I liked:
1: The acting was 99% well done.
2: The singing was amazing. The songs are meaningful and catchy..
3: I love the story... it really resonates with the viewers. Somehow we can appreciate Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle in spite of themselves. ;-)
4: The humor is very laughable. :-)
5: Costumes were lovely! I adore her clothing... so outrageous. Beautiful.
6: Nice, clean romantic element.
7: Reality. It's unfair and cruel. But it's reality.
8: Henry Higgins is an amazing character. Definitely not the typical 'hero' I found him annoying but so laughable...
9: How much of a satire the story is. They make fun of life and everyone in it. But at the same time, it's a gentle mockery for we all can see ourselves in the characters.

Professor Higgins: Women are irrational, that's all there is to that! Their heads are full of cotton, hay, and rags. They're nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating, calculating, agitating, maddening and infuriating hags!

What I didn't Like:
1: Innuendos. Lots of undertones. It's amazing how many there are. :-P Nothing terrible but kind of annoying. In a sense, they were realistic. In another sense, for how prudish the film was in other ways, some of the undertones seemed off color.
2: Some of the scenes (for instance, weeping hysterically..) were kind of... whatever. Lol.
3: "With a little bit of luck, you'll never have to work.." 'nuff said. ;-)

Professor Higgins: I've learned something from your idiotic notions, I confess that; humbly and gratefully.

Things to Know:
1: A little language.
2: Eliza's father is seen in a bar with women of ill-repute and is having his last binge before getting married.

I have two great film trilogies in my life. Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. When I look at them from the perspective I was raised with, I can understand how much I love LotR. But Pirates? They're superfluous ("She's safe, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word, really... except for Elizabeth, who is, in fact, a woman."), malicious ("I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves: a short drop and sudden stop.") and completely irresponsible ("Jack: Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again. Will: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement! In a fair fight, I'd kill you! Jack: Well, that's not much incentive for me to fight fair then, is it?"). They do, however, promote true love and devotion to your friends. But that aside: they're Pirates.

If you love them, you do.

Summary:
When 12 year old Elizabeth Swann looked over the side of the ship and saw a young boy floating in the water, she had no idea her life would be changed forever. She may have had a slight inkling when she discovered and, fearing for his life, hid the gold medallion he wore. But she certainly would not have predicted the turn of events that would later lead her on an adventure that almost claimed her life... and did claim some of whom she loved best.

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of Governer Weatherby Swann. She lives in a beautiful home, with a fine, well meaning father, servants who adore her, plenty to eat and a handsome suitor at her door. Life is perfect. Well, except for one thing. She doesn't love Commodore James Norrington and she wonders if she should. Shouldn't women love their husbands as well as marry them?

But what was really complicating matters was the existence of handsome Will Turner. The young boy hoisted onto the deck of ship eight years ago has grown into a man who makes Elizabeth's heart flutter strangely. It doesn't help that she still wears the medallion that signifies his pirate heritage. Piracy is a crime worthy of death. Perhaps it the feeling that she holds his life in her hands that makes her tender towards him. But he was only an apprentice to the local sword-smith and she was the Governor's daughter. Society rules dictated that ne'er the two should meet, let alone fall in love. She would never have guessed his adoration. And she never would have admitted her feelings towards him, even to herself.

Probably the two would have lived out their days in boredom and some misery had not the dress code of the day set off a course of events. Commodore James Norrington was proposing to Elizabeth in a quiet, romantic spot above the sea. The wind was gently whiffling through Elizabeth's hair, cooling her face. The Commodore voice was pleasant and the sun was shining cheerfully. But Elizabeth's attention was not on the romance but her corset. It was so tight and the day so warm that blackness kept threatening to take over her vision... Abruptly, it did and no one saw Elizabeth Swann sway and topple off the edge of the cliff. Not even James Norrington, who was looking off into the distance as he told Elizabeth how good it would be for her to marry him.

Down into the sea she plunged, missing death by a hair's breadth, sinking slowly to the bottom until her body rested against the sand. The warm water gently rocked her as she crept ever closer to never waking again... and the medallion slipped from it's hiding place. As it touched the sea floor, a pulse was emitted and somewhere in the world, undead pirates lifted their heads in elation.

What I Liked:
1: The story. The writers are brilliant.
2: The acting. Wonderful cast!
3: The score. Thumbs up.
4: The romance. Of course.
5: The fact that I could share this movie.
6: Very little bad language.
7: Curses/magic are presented in such a way that you realize it is fictional.
8: The humor. Very well presented.
9: The production of this film was amazing...

Things to Know:
1: Elizabeth's dresses are often low cut.
2: Some language.
3: Lots of rum!
4: There are pirates.
5: After Elizabeth is rescued, she is stripped of her corset and dress... but has undergarments. She is fairly modest though the chemise is wet.
6: At one point, Elizabeth is told that she eats with the captain or gets handed over to the crew... naked.

Do I recommend this film? Yes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

There is something better than a good movie and that is sharing the good movie with my family. There is something wonderful about Cinderella and this film captures the whimsical, courageous spirit of the fairytale. I think every girl who watches this film will have dreams for years to come of her handsome prince riding into her life on a prancing, stolen steed. But I digress. ;-)

Summary:
Shortly after the Grimm Brothers published their book of fairytales, they were invited to the castle by the Grand Dame of France. She enjoyed their book, especially the story of the little cinder girl but she had questions of it's origin. The Brothers replied that as with so many fairy tales, there are no real answers. Almost immediately upon arrival, they see a strangely familiar painting of a beautiful woman. That woman, The Grand Dame informs them, was Danielle de Barbarac...

Once upon a time, namely the 1500's, there lived a beautiful, energetic little imp of a girl. She had no mother but she did have a loving father and doting house servants who spoiled her terribly. Life was beautiful and Danielle felt she was missing nothing. Her father, however, was of a different opinion. One day, word came that he was bringing home a new mother and two sisters.

Who knows what would have happened if he had been there in the years that passed. But he wasn't. His death was as sudden as the arrival of the step-mother and step-sisters. It left Danielle to their mercy.

The years fly by. Our heroine is now a beautiful young lady and a servant in her own house. She is required to wait on the table, work in the fields, clean the stable... but this doesn't bother Danielle as much as the knowledge that her father's beloved farm is slowly sinking into bankruptcy. Running an estate held no appeal to her step-mother. The only thing she desired was to enter court again and what better way of doing that than to marry her eldest to the Prince?

But one fine day, Danielle finds a ruffian making off with her father's horse and with just wrath in her heart, proceeded to throw apples at him until the horse threw him and he lay groaning at her feet . It was when he staggered upright and uncovered his face that Danielle realized her life was in danger.

She had just bruised royal hide.

What I liked:
1: The innocence of the story. A few kisses, a hug, tender words. Nothing more. So refreshing!
2: Very little offensive language. Non of it was unrealistic...
3: The story flowed well.
4: Step-mother and step-sister were outrageous enough to make us dislike them, but pathetically funny. You couldn't hate them.

5: The prince is a dork who is really thrilling when he finally begins thinking for himself. I loved watching him turn into a man.
6: Danielle is a lovely heroine. I loved her personality... almost everything about her fit my ideal of Cinderella.
7: The humor was really good. :-)
8: Some undertones... they were enough to keep the grownups interested but not enough to make the kids feel lost.
9: For the most part, the clothing is very modest.
10: I love how they included Leonardo Da Vinci.

What I Didn't Like:
1: They say that Danielle was meek and obedient before the story began. Unfortunately all we see is the 'new' Danielle that alternately shocks and delights those around her.
2: Danielle's independent spirit and zeal are both realistic and unrealistic. Messed with my mind. This I did not like. Lol.
3: Some language ... nothing over the top.

You don't have to ask if I recommend this film. :-) It's sweet.

I had never even heard of Japanese Anime before a friend of mine dropped off his entire collection of Hayao Miyazaki's creations for me to watch. Since then, I have been treating myself to an important chapter in the history of film.

I like to have a beginning and an end, so I am watching them in order of production. The first one was, of course, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I have since watched most of his other films but I must admit, none of them had the magic of Nausicaa. Her character is one that people everywhere can aspire to. The story itself is unique. I believe the world view of Hayao Miyazaki is something we can learn from, even if we might not be in 100% agreement with him. This is definitely a children's film but it is so cleverly done that it appeals to all ages and will remain well known for many years.

Summary:
1000 years after an the collapse of civilization as we know it, most of the world has been taken over by a toxic jungle full of poisonous spores and insects of enormous size. The world's population have nestled themselves into little kingdoms away from the jungle's death... but slowly and as surely as the clouds that block the sun, it suffocates them and leaves their bones for weary travelers to find.

Princess Nausicaa is a teen-age, independent young woman whom we first see exploring the desert landscape via glider. She is a fearless flyer and her heart beats with the wind that keeps the poisonous spores away from her small kingdom. Over the desert and into the jungle, her lithe body and glider are one as her eyes search for her prize. Today, she seeks answers for her father's illness. It weakens him daily... his hands once so strong cannot grip his sword. But the very worst of his sickness is that he can fly no longer.

On the edge of the jungle, Nausicaa's glider is abandoned as she slips and slides into the strange light of the underworld. It is so beautiful, yet without her mask, it would kill her in minutes. As she explores, Nausicaa discovers a resource that will make her people very happy: a perfect Ohm shell. To give the men incentive to come bring the Ohm shell to The Valley of the Wind, she takes one of it's eyes to bring back home with her. But as she turns to go, she catches a glimpse through the eye. Enchanted, she lays back on the Ohm's shell with the eye over her and, amidst the other eyes and ridges, watches the beautiful but deadly spores drift through the jungle's shadows ...

Something breaks into her daydreams. Her heart beats wildly; anger is stirring. The first hint of trouble has come to the world of Nausicaa... but also the first hint of whom she is to become.

Life is never dull for Nausicaa. Mainly because she doesn't allow dullness. Her heart is solely for her people, her family, her kingdom. Her faith in nature and humanity allow her hopes to speak to all who know her. And all who know her cannot help but love her in the end. We see her in rage, fear, defeat, love... we feel her joys and pain. I mourned her.

I can't help but be amazed at this story. In some ways, I laughed at it because it was childish. But I loved it for being childish because I learned from it. I normally cannot enjoy something that isn't top quality; although this film was far ahead of it's time, it is definitely not a recent production. However, I did not mind that. One little bit. :-)

Things I Liked:
1: The idea that being in harmony with nature should be at the core of our existence.
2: The love that Nausicaa had. Love wasn't part of her. It was her.
3: The bad guys aren't really bad. They're just misguided. ;-)
4: We create many of the problems in nature... and ultimately, our lives.
5: The fact that they used Chris Sarandon for the villain. The entire movie, I kept saying, "isn't that...? I'm sure that's Prince Humperdinck!" :-)
6: Story, voices, music, etc, etc.

What I Didn't Like:
1: Evolution was really stressed.
2: The Japanese religion is very much part the story. Some of it is truth but some of it isn't. As with any film, eat the meat and spit out the bones.

Do I recommend this film? Yes. :-) View and enjoy!

Before I begin, I must admit something: I am a Holmes purist. He is an amazingly imperfect, phenomenally genius literary character that is just right the way he was written.

I have the highest respect for the quality of this film. But I despise what they have done to Holmes. However, there are others out in the world who have really enjoyed this film and I would bet you're among them. :-) So I hope to encourage you to watch this film for the reasons I appreciate it.

Summary:

It is interesting that our first impression of Sherlock Holmes is that he is the criminal. Racing ahead of the police; leaping, falling, taking shortcuts that they couldn't. We're upset because we feel the bad guy is getting away and justice has lost again. And then, we see his face. There is only one man who could have that expression.

Five girls have been murdered through a black magic ritual and Holmes is on his way to stop the madman behind it. He and Watson arrive just in time to save the sixth innocent girl from plunging the knife into her heart. Lord Blackwood's cloak is thrown back and his evil face exposed. But strangely enough, his face bears no expression of sorrow or guilt for what he has done. Instead, there is exultation and triumph.

Even after Lord Blackwood is carted to prison and the girl restored alive to her family, Holmes cannot forget the images of that night. Certainly, Lord Blackwood is safely locked away, awaiting his trial. Watson is even going to be on hand to make sure the man is dead after being hung. but the master detective cannot wipe from his mind the triumphant expression that crossed Lord Blackwood's face. There is something Sherlock Holmes has overlooked and he can smell it through the gunpowder haze in his apartment. (The gunpowder was from his new wall decoration of bullet holes depicting the Queen's initials: VR.)

Then, Irene shows up and the situation suddenly grows into something much more exciting.

What I Liked:
1: I loved the score. It was just right.
2: The way Holmes' mind worked. They really got it down well.
3: How everything is explained in the end and nothing was supernatural.
4: Jude Law was the perfect Watson. I love him in that role.
5: From other movies I have seen and books I have read, the period was well portrayed and factual.
6: You are actually made nervous for the main characters' survival. ;-)
7: The story itself was very well told and would have been wonderful had it not been for the things listed below.
8: I love Watson and Mary.

9: I really enjoyed trying to figure out what was happening and keep a close eye on all the details. Awesome on the details...
10: As a villain, Mark Strong was excellent. He played in the 1995 version of Emma and I really appreciated his performance there, as well.

What I Didn't Like:
1: The entire Irene aspect was the first part of what ruined Holmes for me. He simply wasn't interested in women. By adding Irene to the mix, they made Holmes impossible. He could not have existed the way they portrayed him.
2: Holmes was eccentric and difficult in the books. Watson despaired more than once because of Holmes' personality. But never did Holmes act purposely cruel or petty. To his mind, it was below him.
3: There is a scene where Irene drops her gown (for Holmes' benefit). You only see her back and her shoulders but the implication is there.
4: Holmes wakes up from being drugged and he is naked, handcuffed to the bed with a pillow... also, there is a 'perfectly innocent' comment that makes the maid gasp and flee the room. :-P

Things to Know:
1: Black magic is practiced... Holmes proves that what it accomplished was not supernatural.
2: It can be frightening.
3: People are murdered.

Am I glad I watched it? Yes and no. Yes because it was very well directed and produced. No because they messed with Holmes and added stuff to the story that cheapened it. However, I have only spoken to one other person who did not like this movie and it was another Holmes Purist. So if you are not a Holmes purist and you want to watch an exciting, well done movie, I would recommend it to you. :-)

Of all fantasy movies, I would have to say this one is my favorite. I love how graceful and whimsical it is... and yet, so frightening and repulsive. When I watched it I felt I was looking at myself, my life. The story opened my eyes to some realities that I had not come to terms with.

Summary:
In Philadelphia, there was an apartment complex. In this complex there lived some anonymous people. All of them were hiding from the world, their reality, in one way or another. There was a man who worked cross word puzzles incessantly, a large Hispanic family with five hysterical daughters, Reggie the body builder who only works out half of his body, an animal lover who is reaching the end of her middle years, an Asian mother and daughter who constantly fight, a group of five nameless smokers, the man who never speaks, etc, etc, and of course, Cleveland Heep, the apartment's maintenance man.

When it comes to keeping the place from falling around his ears, Cleveland Heep is competent and seemingly content. He has a speech impediment that keeps him 'safe' from conversation and even safer from friendships. The first time we see him, he is showing the latest tenant to said tenant's newly taken apartment and shielding him, rather unsuccessfully I might add, against some of the more obnoxious tenants. My first impression of Cleveland Heep's character was how comfortable he was with his life... the man seemed to ooze with pained satisfaction as he toiled on and on. As if he was endlessly, thankfully busy and alone.

But there was something happening with the complex pool and it bothered him. The water kept getting slimy, as if kids were swimming in it at night. After having the filter cleaned a couple times because of it, he was getting downright upset and decided to wait the night up to catch the culprits.

Sure enough, that night there was a disturbance in the pool and he went out to investigate. He could see nothing at first but catches a glimpse of someone trying to grab something off a lawn chair sitting beside the pool. Very frustrated at the intrusion of his normality, he let go of reason and entered the pool in hopes of catching whoever it was. No such luck. Further problems awaited him outside the pool when his feet slipped out from under him and he hit his head on the concrete surround. Unconscious, his body slips into the pool.

When he woke up, he found himself in his apartment, soaking wet, with a huge goose egg taking possession of his head. Groggily, he looks around and tries to sit up. Then he sees her.

She tells him her name is Story.

What I Liked:
1: I loved the fairytale. Fairytales are called fairytales because they aren't (usually!) realistic. This one was beautiful unrealistic and full of symbolism.
2: How clean the film was... but there was enough innuendo to help the story flow better. Sorry, you'll have to watch it. ;-)
3: The humor. It's so wacky and laughable.
4: I love the diversity of the characters and...
5: ...the psychology of them, the story, M. Night Shyamalan, etc.
6: M. Night's movies all have a different feel to them, I think. I love the uniqueness and the freshness. It gives me a different look at movies.
7: The message of everyone, even the smallest and the one hurt most, have a purpose. But we just can't sit and wait for it.
8: I love how everything is backwards. I love how M. Night defied many story 'rules' of our western society.
9: This movie is very frightening. Not so much the 'jump' scenes but the entire story. The evil you only hear about but never see... etc, etc. And I don't think it was only because of Story's possible death but what you knew it would do to the people she was with.
10: After Story brings it, hope is never lost. No matter how awful the circumstances were, it was always there... waiting for us to grasp.

Things to Know:
1: The only clothes Story is seen in is a shirt from Cleveland's closet. There is a scene where she is implied naked and Cleveland walks in on her. It is the only scene where you feel he slapped out of his pain and made aware of her femininity. He tells her to put on her clothes. We see her knees down, nothing else.
2: Some very frightening scenes and suspense moments.
3: I appreciate the morality and message of this film. It is good. Keep in mind that truth is truth, regardless of where it comes from. But also keep in mind that there is no greater lie than one that is mostly true. Be discerning. Be prayerful. As with all things in this life, seek God in it and discard the rest. :-)
4: There are scenes that involve smoking, a party, drinking and someone vomiting. Just sayin'. ;-)

My Thoughts:
This movie is interesting in the controversy surrounding it. From what I read, it seems you will either love this movie or you will hate it. Some people find it way over the top. Others, find the hope and joy and purpose that M. Night Shyamalan made this story sparkle with. I would say that if you've been known to be sane and normal, you probably won't like it. ;-) Hehe. j/k

I did some research of this film. If you want to read some scathing movie reviews, check this baby out! They're rampant! They criticize the story. They criticize the methods. They almost criticize the actors he picked (then they catch themselves and admit Paul Giamatti was wonderful). They criticize the fairytale aspect. They criticize how unbelievable the story is. They criticize the fact that M. Night Shyamalan played a leading, very messianic role in the movie. They criticize... M. Night Shyamalan.

For your information, I do not group all of film critics together. But for the majority of the negative reviewers, it comes out that the most unforgivable part of the movie was M. Night's retaliation to all the critical reviews "The Village" (his previous film) received. So blatant was he that all those who spoke against "The Village" could not help but see themselves in "Lady of the Water".

You may like a film or not like a film. If you live in a country where this is permitted, you can express your opinions and tear it to pieces. But your character is shown in the way you do so. Many of the reviewers who bitterly express their disgust for M. Night Shyamalan and his work do not appreciate the same being done to them. Bitterness clouds the mountaintops of greatness.

I will not tell you what to think of this movie. If you like it, jolly good. If not, that's fine too. But be careful not to be blinded to the messages M. Night Shyamalan may have for us... in spite of his genius faulted ideals.

This probably the funniest, most unique, fresh western that I've seen in my entire life. It had so many twists and turns that I was kept on the edge of my seat, alternately laughing and shocked.

Roy O'Bannon: "There are some things in this world that are just plain wrong and stealing a princess is one of them."

Summary:
In The Forbidden City of China there lived beautiful princess Pei Pei, her father and the "pig" her father was forcing her to marry. Also living in the city were thousands of imperial guards who's entire lives were purposed in serving the royalty of their country. Among these was a man who dared think outside of the box and caught a glimpse of the Princess. It was in the moment Chong Wang saw her face that his heart was smitten. Probably he would have gone through his life hopelessly in love had it not been through a series of events in which Princess Pei Pei was kidnapped and held for ransom.

Three Imperial Guards were chosen to bring the amount of gold requested to the appointed place. Chong Wang was not among them but, feeling that it was his fault the Princess had been abducted, he begged to be allowed to accompany them and bring the Princess back to China. In the end, it was agreed to accept his request because there was high hopes of the 'foreign devils' ridding China of his presence.

So they set off for Nevada, USA, to do or die. The Wild West that awaited them was not prepared for such loyalty and devotion while the Chinamen were not prepared for knots the Wild West would throw at them. Chong Wang was especially not prepared for Roy O'Bannon: wild and woolly outlaw of a really mean... uh... gang. Train Robbers. Sort of. Wannabes. Yeah.

Gang member: "Is that the train?"

Unfortunately for Roy and his gang, they decide to rob the train that is carrying Chong Wang, his uncle, the other Imperial Guards (they didn't know about that until later) and the gold to ransom the Princess (they didn't know about that until much later!). Perhaps their paths wouldn't have crossed at all but the newest member of Roy's gang got a little trigger happy and killed Chong Wang's uncle. Roy is upset and hustles his gang out of the passenger car to car containing the safe. But no sooner have they left the car when Chong Wang happens on the scene. His grief on finding his uncle's lifeless form is soon overrun with anger and he swears to avenge his murder.

It doesn't take long for him to foil the poor gang's plans and to get Roy O'Bannon in one big heap of trouble. But amazingly, even in the most difficult circumstances Chong Wang's idealistic attitude and devotion rub off on whomever he touches... and of all the people he meets, he changes Roy the most.

Chong Wang: "He took the gold."
Roy O'Bannon: "Is that all you're worried about? Shame on you."

What I Liked:
1: The acting. As you know, Owen Wilson is one of my favorite actors. This is the first movie I've seen Jackie Chan in and I already appreciate him.
2: The humor. It was really, really funny. Jackie Chan's silent comedy was to die for. And of course, Owen Wilson's lines were as great as always. :)

3: Soundtrack was good.
4: Lots of gags and little details that one has to look for carefully. I love watching a movie three or four times and still finding new things to laugh about.
5: Although rated PG-13... the sexuality was toned down. It wasn't nearly as bad as I had been anticipating.
6: Not much language.
7: There is a mystery... I love mysteries.
8: I really like the look at the Chinese culture. It definitely wasn't complete but it was enough to give me a taste.
9: Happy endings for the good guys are always my favorites.

What I Didn't Like:

2: Some language. It wasn't over the top but some people might have a problem with it.

Things to Know:
1: There is some crude humor regarding a wet shirt and prison bars. Lol. It makes me laugh every time just because it's so appropriate it doesn't seem crude. But I understand why people would find it offensive. I would had it been in any other context.
2: This movie is not realistic in many ways but it didn't bother me this time because the movie is a satire/comedy. You can get away with a lot if you make me laugh. :-P

Do I recommend this movie? If you like westerns and you like spoofs and you don't mind laughing at yourself, go for it. This movie touched my soul and still made me smile.

Green and Black Organic Chocolate

I became a Green and Black fan quite suddenly. I will never forget the moment it happened. As a rule, I do not like organic chocolate because the only organic chocolate that I had had tasted was waxy, nearly flavorless and general mockery of the that OTHER food group.

But I love caramel with chocolate. I just do. It's this weakness of mine that I can't help. So while in Regina, Saskatchewan's own http://www.dadsnutrition.com/ and happened to see this:

I knew I was going to have to try it. I mean, for that price and with caramel? How bad could it be?!

How can I explain what it was like?

Chocolate. Pure. Unadulterated. Healthy for me. Chocolate.

Caramel. Smooth. Drippy. But not too drippy. Sweet. But not too sweet. Real. Caramel.

Rich. So rich I, the worst chocoholic of them all, could only eat two small sections of the chocolate bar. That made me feel good about myself. ;-)

I was completely swept off my feet and haven't been set back down. It's been months.

Because I was so enamored, I decided to take a closer look at their website: http://www.greenandblacks.com/ca/ and found that they don't just specialize in Caramel Milk Chocolate Bars. Indeed, their repertoire or products expands far beyond what I had ever envisioned!

They sell many different kinds of Chocolate Bars... I have personally tried the Milk Chocolate and can recommend it. I am eager to try all of their others... White, Expresso, Almond, Maya Gold, Ginger, Hazelnut and Currant, Butterscotch, Dark 85%... etc, etc.

Then, I discovered something else about Green and Black Organic Chocolate: they sell Cocoa, Hot Chocolate Mix, Hazelnut Chocolate Spread, Chocolate eggs... and they even have recipes for things like this:

I find the varying opinions on this movie to be amusing. I love this movie and my best friend can't stand it. (We're still friends, btw. ;-)) It is interesting how people do not 'kind-of-like' or 'kind of don't like' this story... they either hate it or love it.

Summary:
Alice Kingsley has been having bad dreams as long as she can remember. Well, to be factual, one bad dream. Over and over. It's about a blue caterpillar, a Cheshire cat who smiled incessantly and a strange place that she has forgotten the name of. When she was a child, her father would comfort her when she would wake up from her dream but as the days drew on and the years passed, he died and left her and her mother feeling unsettled and at loose ends.

Mad Hatter: "You used to be much... muchier. You've lost your muchness."

Alice became so muddled and unsure of who she was that one fine day, she found herself at her own (surprise) engagement party where she was expected to accept the marriage proposal of Hamish Ascot. But she wasn't sure she wants to marry Hamish, even though he is a lord (and her pretty face won't last). She looks at all the guests gathered around the gazebo, awaiting her 'yes' ... and abruptly runs away, after a rabbit in a waistcoat.

Lady Ascot: "Do you know what I fear most?"
Alice: "The decline of the aristocracy?"
Lady Ascot: "Ugly grandchildren."

Through the rose garden, behind the shrubs, over the fields and up a hill, the White Rabbit leads her on until quite suddenly, he disappears down a hole at the base of a tree. Perplexed, Alice leans down to see where he went. Her hand slips and Alice disappears too, plunging her head over heels into the vast darkness. With a shriek of terror, she falls... down, down, bouncing off pianos, books and feather beds, her hair tumbling around her face, until she finally lands on her face at the bottom.

In the very famous sequence of events, Alice finds the door, the key, the shrinking drink and growing cake and finally manages to extract herself from the room... entering into a world of magical creatures. Talking flowers, said rabbit in waistcoat, feisty doormouse and, of course, Tweedledee and Tweedledum; but they aren't interested in introductions. Much to her confusion, there seems to be some debate about whether she is the 'right Alice' or not. "How can that be?" she asks. "It's my dream!" But no, they must consult Absolem and off the Tweedles lead her with the White Rabbit and the other creatures trailing behind.

Blue Caterpillar: "Who are you?"
Alice: "Absolem?"
Blue Caterpillar: "You're not Absolem. I'm Absolem. Stupid girl."

The verdict was that she was "not hardly" Alice and they all gather around our poor heroine with such pained looks that she grows irate and pinches herself to wake up. It doesn't work. The doormouse offers a jab in the foot with her wee sword and Alice accepts the offer, thankfully. But in the middle of these proceedings, they are rudely interrupted by a surprise attack from the Red Queen's soldiers. Most of her companions are captured and carried away but Alice manages to escape. Though escape to where she is not sure.

This is when, after a brief moment of vapors, Cheshire Cat appears with his ceaseless grin and droll voice and manages to persuade Alice to accompany him to the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. Ironically, in face of madness, life begins to be sane again and our Alice has the chance to find herself. But whether she takes that chance or not is an entirely different matter.

March Hare: "Spoon!"

What I Liked:
1: Even though this story is pure fantasy, I was able to relate to it and learn from it.
2: The acting was simply amazing.
3: The score was beautiful and one I definitely want to own someday!
4: I dislike Hamish with my entire heart. Bravo, Leo Bill. ;-)
5: This may sound contrary to the genre of fantasy, but I must say it: so many details were looked after to make this story as realistic as possible. Their efforts paid off.
6: Mia was a wonderful choice for Alice. She made the movie. The other actors were really wonderful as well (great cast!) but without the right Alice, there is no magic.
7: That although this movie is completely safe for kids to watch, there is enough substance to keep adult audiences watching in enjoyment.
8: How it discourages marrying for something other than love.
9: The message of hope.
10: Production quality is 10 or more stars. Very well done.

Things to Know:
The message of this movie is about finding your place in life. It is a message of hope to those who feel trapped in their lives and their place in their world. You do not have to fill the role society has dictated. However, if the viewer comes with the idea that women are better than men, they may come away from this film gloating. Lol! As with all films, watch with discernment. :-)

I have just discovered Dolly Parton. I don't know why it took me so long to discover her, but I am making up for lost time now! I love her voice. Seriously, I don't think I've heard any other female voice who could beat that sound. She is amazing.

Summary:
There once was a school called the Experiment House where some unfortunate children, who had parents or guardians of modern thought, were sent to get their education. There were a few children there who actually came to learn but the majority were a group of bullies who made life decidedly worse. At this school, there was no such thing as corporal punishment. If you were a bully, you were said to be an interesting psychological case and more likely as not, best friends with the Head.

But the bullies loved best to pick on our friend from Voyage of the Dawn Treader (who came back from his adventure greatly changed) and his friend Jill Pole. In fact, the story opens with Jill crying behind the gym because she had just come away from being picked on. Eustace Scrubb stumbled upon her and after finding out the reason for her tears, talked her into trying to slip away from the school grounds until the bullies were out of range.

Eustace had never forgotten Narnia and dearly wanted to return. But he didn't know how, except to call on His Name. But just as they were in the middle of doing so, they heard the noise of their adversaries and forgot completely about Aslan and Narnia. In their rush to get away, they tried the door in the wall that led out to the moor. Usually it was locked up tight but this time, “by Gum!” the handle turned and the door opened. To their surprise, however, it wasn't the moor that awaited them on the other side but sunlight and smooth, green turf and a beautiful forest with singing birds winging their way from branch to tree.

Isn't it rather funny how quickly adventure was sprung upon them? Perhaps it was not exactly in the same way as before but it was just as exciting. But through all the fear and excitement and joy and pain, Aslan is never far away. When their paths were darkest and there seemed no way out, His love and mercy shone the strongest.

“Please, what task, Sir?” asked Jill.
“The task for which I called you and him here out of your own world.”
This puzzled Jill very much. “It's mistaking me for someone else,” she thought. She didn't dare to tell the Lion this, though she felt things would get into a dreadful muddle unless she did.
“Speak your thought, Human Child,” said the Lion.
“I was wondering – I mean – could there be some mistake? Because nobody called me and Scrubb you know. It was we who asked to come here. Scrubb said we were to call to – to Somebody – it was a name I wouldn't know – and perhaps the Somebody would let us in. And we did and then we found the door open.”

What I Liked:
1: I have always enjoyed the thought of Giants and Fauns and Centaurs and all manner of fairytale creatures. Did you know that Fauns are mentioned in the Bible?
2: The allegory. I found many truths tucked away just waiting to be discovered. :-)
3: The style. Very easy to read and understand.
4: The humor.
