PugSpeak Pug Bracelets

Our jewelry and gemstone vendor travels regularly to search for new and interesting gemstone and wood beads.

Sometime back, he found wood beads (pictured at left) in Africa and discovered they date back some 250 years ago. Today, they are in perfect condition and still offer brilliant color and design. Welcome Zander to the PugSpeak Family!

We are happy to announce our newest addition to the PugSpeak family! Meet Zander Tiberius Kirk Crissman!

Zander is 8 months old and arrived from a Clay County, MO rescue in early April. While Zander is settling in nicely with older brothers Trevor, Ian, and Mackie, we are getting to know him and this is what we've learned:

Zander loves to play, run, gallop, and tease his brothers. He has an amazing zest for life! Zander loves music - particularly Django Reinhardt! He loves to eat, and especially loves to be cuddled and kissed. To date, he has received about 16,000 kisses!

One of Zander's favorite times of the day is evening when he and his pug pop, Lowell sit together and watch TV. And Zander especially enjoys playing with 2-year-old granddaughter, Jackie!

Cancellation of One Life To Live

This post admittedly has nothing to do with pugs or PugSpeak, but I wish to share my letter to Brian Frons at ABC for cancellation of One Life To Live and All My Children. If you wish to write, here are the email addies: brian.frons@abc.com and anne.sweeney@abc.com

And now on to the letter:

Dear Mr. Frons:

My recent emails regarding the cancellation of One Life To Live and All My Children have come more as an emotional plea for a change of heart. Then I began reading online articles including your quotes regarding the public wanting more "lifestyle" and "reality-based" shows.

Here is a direct quote: “We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways."

My first question would be - which viewers are you referring to? I have never been asked what kinds of programming I would like to see. My family, friends, co-workers, and casual acquaintances have never been asked or polled. Who exactly is representing the public?

Secondly, the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) and cable networks are already saturated with "lifestyle" and "reality" programming. Simply pick up your remote and surf for five minutes. We are inundated with shows on weight loss, food, healthcare, mental healthcare, fashion, home and garden, politics, etc. And that's not even mentioning the "reality" shows such as The Bachelor (where young men petition a network to pimp for them and the network is glad to oblige.)

And that's not to say that I have a problem with Oprah or Dr. Phil or Dancing With the Stars. But you speak as though soaps rule the airwaves. And the truth is - soaps are an endangered form of entertainment. If we are going to conform to even more programming of the variety you propose, then why not remove all sitcoms? What about Castle? Grey's Anatomy? Desperate Housewives? Replace those with even more food and fashion shows. If you are going to start this path, you have to follow it to its logical and consistent conclusion.

To get back to my original point: Why not allow One Life To Live and All My Children to remain? What is wrong with airing a show that has been weaving an intriguing and compelling story for 30 or 40 years? I would not have stayed with One Life To Live since 1968 for example, if they were doing something wrong. My family and friends would have ceased watching if it lacked entertainment value. When the public remains steadfast to their soaps and you have sponsors willing to pay for the advertising time, why yank that away? One Life To Live has some 2.6 million viewers. All My Children touts some 2.3 million. It is doubtful you will see that viewership increase dramatically by pulling these shows and placing a food or fashion show in their place.

Respectfully, we are asking that you reconsider this move - for all the loyal, longtime fans.

Speaking as one person, I don't know how much good it will do, but we have to give it a try!

Neuter and Spay the Best Prevention - Please Read

Recently, we found a stray pug boy (not neutered) and cared for him until the owner was found. We believe he ran away partly because he was not neutered. I can sit here and write till the cows come home and I believe you, the reader, have heard the message before. But this example is proof positive why neutering and spaying is vital! If this post will convince even one reader to neuter or spay, then we may have prevented a box of puppies from being dumped or have prevented a little boy or girl doggie from bolting due to hormonal urges.

I am amazed at the number of dogs I encounter that are not neutered or spayed. What's up with this? The three main reasons I hear for not neutering or spaying are:

1. I can't afford it
2. If I neuter my male dog, he won't be manly anymore.
3. I didn't think anything could happen.

Okay, where to begin:

Neutering and spaying does not have to be expensive, folks! Many Humane Society branches and other shelters will spay and neuter at a lower cost. Not all veterinarians charge a huge fee to spay and neuter. In the final analysis, you can shop around and prevent an unwanted litter of puppies or kitties. If you want to bring a pet into the family, this has to be part of the package! It is a one-time fee and you never have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy again.

Regarding reason number 2, may I just say - a bigger load of rubbish I have never heard! This is purely a myth and one of huge proportions. Whether this is some leftover stereotypical propaganda of the 50s or what, I don't know. Have we all just jumped into our DeLoreans and raced back in time? Trust me, your male dog will be happier and less aggressive. There is nothing manly about a male dog running upstreet and down alley impregnating every female within a 5 mile radius. Think about how many of those puppies will wind up in shelters and possibly be put down. Or dumped on the side of the road or behind a building. How cruel is that? According to the Humane Society, more than three million unwanted dogs and cats in shelters are put to sleep each year.

Reason number 3 - all it takes is one time. If your female is not spayed and there's even one un-neutered male in the area, he'll find a way to make a date and she will find a way to rendezvous. You can't fight nature - and unless you are a responsible and professional breeder, you are actually being cruel to your pet. Even if you keep close watch on your dog or cat, you allow them to go through the heat cycle. It's analogous to being all dressed up and no place to go.

I urge every dog and cat owner out there to please, please neuter and spay your pets. If you need help finding a facility to do this at low cost, you can go to the following links for referrals in your area:
