Samsung will unveil a new portable device: Note 2 the Galaxy?

The giant South Korean electronics Samsung Electronics said Friday they would unveil a new mobile device in late August, just weeks before the expected release of the iPhone 5 by its fiercest competitor, the Apple.

The new device will be presented on Aug. 29 in Berlin, two days before the big event of the European sector, the IFA.

For analysts, this is probably the newest version of its Galaxy tablet. Product, launched in October 2011, is a tablet of only 5.3 inches, so halfway between the size of a mobile phone and a tablet. It is used also as a phone too.

Running the new operating system Android (Google), Ice Cream Sandwich, the tablet is equipped with a stylus, which itself has an eraser, to more easily take notes and erase them.

"It is very likely that this is the Galaxy Note 2," said Greg Roh, an analyst at HMC Investment Securities. But this ad is not necessarily linked to the new version of the iPhone scheduled for September or October, he said.

"Samsung is trying to maintain its reputation as number one on the smartphone, and it wants to prove he still has something new to show consumers," added the analyst.

Apple has it sold 26 million smartphones during this period and its market share totaled 17.8% against 18.4% a year ago.

Samsung and Apple is currently facing a federal court in San Jose (California).

U.S. group calls for more than $ 2.5 billion, accusing its South Korean rival of copying its designs and other patents. For its part, Samsung accuses U.S. of violating some of its own patents.

The trial, which began Monday, is to disentangle these cross charges.

5 Reasons Why Google Plus Will Never Take The Place Of Facebook

With the launch and humungous growth of Google Plus, many people have begun to think that Facebook’s reign of the social networking world may be (relatively)soon close to be being over. Is this because people are infatuated with Google Plus? Or because of people disdain hatred for Facebook (some people, not everybody) and what the new social platform can do to their lives.

A lot can be learned from the last F8 conference. Mark Zuckerberg, even though he can be really “awkward” (I guess that just depends on what you think awkward really means), has all ears on him once the big screen of Facebook appears behind him, and he’s walking back forth on stage – you pay full attention. This is true whether you think he is being awkward or not. This is because you know that what he is saying is going to be important. Anyways, I digress, but this brings me to my first point…

1) F8 and the new design of Facebook, which will be called Timeline strongly shows that they just have a tremendous head start in social network world. They have more insight to the nature of the beast – the online social world. And since the foundation of their product was built upon human relationships and how we interact, it is where everything is heading.

In contrast, Google’s foundation is search. “Search” VS “Social” are two different things that define us as human beings. Who will win? It is such an interesting story and one that may take many years to figure out.

2) Facebook Does have a search provider on their side. Even though it’s not the biggest one, having Bing on their side may perhaps lead to playing a huge role in how “Social” meets “Search” This is what Google is trying to do right now.

3) People have a Facebook addiction. It is a huge part of our lives. For a lot of people in the world, Facebook is just as important as waking up and eating breakfast in the morning. This is especially true in the teen world. Teenagers can be totally consumed with Facebook. Google Plus may have more than 25 million users, but Facebook users are on Facebook more than any other website.

4) It took Google Plus 16 Days to hit 25 million users, but would those users be there if it wasn’t for the search giants already humungous platform of users. Even though Facebook’s growth was much slower, it was growth that fundamentally grew because of its ability to connect people. Google’s growth is due to the fact that they can put a little blue arrow on the biggest search engine in the world’s homepage that advertises their new social platform.

That being said, this may also be Google’s largest advantage. This is because they can continue to work on Google Plus until they get it right basically free of charge. They are basically free rolling now, and that is giving them a lot of time and a lot of data to do whatever they want with Google Plus.

5) People love the Facebook story. People loved that it started on the college scene. It used to be an awesome and exclusive way to brag that you went to college, and to meet others that were on the same campus as you. People loved the story so much, that it kicked off a great movie – a movie that had all the different kinds of drama from life that you could ever ask for.

As Mark Zucherberg said in one of his many Interviews said: “When you make a great product, one that people love, you can afford to make a lot of mistakes.” You will notice that everybody always hates the new Facebook updates at first, but sooner or later, everybody begins to love them – Just like the News Feed. We’ll just have to see if that trend continues with the rollout of “Timeline.”

Microsoft’s Latest Innovation “OmniTouch”, Turns Any Flat Surface into a Multi-Touch Screen

At a user interface symposium this week in Santa Barbara, Calif Microsoft Research presented their new technology that will transform any surface into a touch screen. This new technology is dubbed as OmniTouch and it is a wearable system that enables multi-touch input on “arbitrary, daily surfaces.

Hrvoje Benko of the Natural Interaction Research group at Microsoft added that “We wanted to take advantage of the terrific surface area the real world provides”

This technology unites a depth-sensing camera and laser-based pico projector, the latter not like Microsoft’s Kinect camera for the Xbox 360. But it has been re-designed to function at short range.

The camera which is used in OmniTouch technology is a prototype given by PrimeSense and when the projector and camera are adjusted to each other, then the user can put on the system and can begin to use it, as said by Microsoft.

The key research challenges primarily revolved around defining to the system what fingers look like and also the notion that any surface is can be the potential projected surface signaling the touch interaction; and detecting touch when the surface which is being touched contains no sensors- as told by Chris Harrison, a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University, who participated in the project and wrote about the research.

Apparently a user friendly system doesn’t require a bulky apparatus which only a card-carrying propeller head would be blatant enough to wear in public.

The project is being unveiled at the UIST 2012, which is the 24th symposium by the Association of Computing Machinery regarding the User Interface Software and Technology. The conference will be held from October 16 to October 19 in Santa Barbara, California.

Google Music Store–The Final Destination For Your Tunes

There is a new buzz in the industry; the launch of the much awaited Google music store. According to several opinions this is a move seen to counter competition from Apple iTunes and Amazon.com. There is a lot of speculation of the opening of this facility and the names of companies with which the company will have a tie-up to sell their music. Reports are doing rounds of impending deals the company is in the process of signing with some of the biggest names in the music industry. It is widely understood that a lack of this will however affect the project’s viability especially to sustain the existing competition From Apple Inc. and Amazon.com.

Reports are doing rounds that despite efforts to sign deals with big music corporations like Sony Music and Warner Music Group Google music store is yet to finalize any formal agreement so far. The only agreement that has been signed is with EMI Group even though this has not been officially confirmed. Among the various facilities available here users will be able to access the Music Beta facility; with this users will be able to store their chosen music in the cloud and then download the same onto their various devices. These will include smartphones, tablet PCs, laptops and desktops. Though this service was released earlier on its availability was not feasible owing to the lack of music resources. So far users cannot buy or download any music from the facility; but here they can store their own music and sort out the playlists.

With a successful launch of the Google music store it would bring resources to android Smartphone users in the same way as Apple iTunes brings to iphone, ipad and ipod users. It would be a complete facility that the company will be able to provide the ever increasing users of the android phones. For many this is seen as a business move that is aimed at bringing better and focused services to its patrons and users rather than emphasizing on competing with others in the industry. The success of the ongoing talks with four major music companies will effectively determine the extent to which android users will be able to enjoy the concept of the Music Beta in its entirety.

The whole progress of the launch of the Google music store is shrouded in deep mystery. Much of what is written and spoken of it is based on earnest speculation and observation. There has been no official confirmation on any aspect of the ongoing progress made in this sphere. It is also understood that the official launch of the store is only a few weeks away even though the company has maintained strict and perfect silence about it. There is a lot of expectations among users and buyers of android phones who are looking forward to it. In addition to the music downloads and choices that would be available.

Google is also expected to initiate several innovative features and applications aimed at provide a wide array of related services.

GMusic Is a Native Google Music Player for the iPhone

iOS: GMusic is a new native iOS app that streams music from your Google Music account right to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. It can even download songs for offline playback, something that the previously mentioned webapp provided by Google is unable to do.

GMusic is available in the iTunes App Store for $1.99, and the developers call that the "introductory price," so if you're interested, you may want to get it now. The app loads quickly, looks like iOS's native music player, and gives you access to all of the songs you've uploaded to Google Music. Tap any song to start playing, and tap the blue icon next to the song name to download the track locally so you can play it when you don't have a data connection or your signal drops.

The only downside to GMusic is that while the app does support offline playback, you have to have the radios on for the app to work. If your phone is in airplane mode, it won't start. If you suddenly lose signal however, the app works just fine and you can play the songs you've downloaded.

Even with its caveats, the app is native and supports multitasking, so you can fire it up and listen to your Google Music tunes while working on something else or checking your mail. If you're looking for an alternative to the webapp, this is a good option. You'll need a Google Music account to use the app, and it's worth a reminder that Google Music is in beta, is invite-only, and is only available in the US.

Android’s Most Popular Game Emulators Pulled from Market

If you've got any of the popular "oid" game emulators, like Nesoid, Snesoid, N64oid, or Gensoid, then you may want to make backups of them now and take care not to delete them. Google's removed them all from the Market, as well as revoked all developer rights from their creator, Yong Zhang. Since this isn't the first time an emulator's been pulled from the Android Market, it's probably safe to say that anybody who has any game emulator already installed on their device should keep it there, or they may not be able to replace it later.

Yong's now listed his entire *oid line of emulator apps, completely free, at SlideME for a two-week-period to allow current users who've already purchased them to get a copy before it's too late. If you were thinking of getting one of them and just hadn't gotten around to it, now's the time—they may not be there much longer.

Whether you're looking to relive the past or experience the origin of gaming you missed in your youth, your Android or iPhone can take you back to Mario's salad days, the birth of the Final Fantasy series, and much more. Here's how to get started with retro game emulation and turn your phone or tablet into an arcade in just a few minutes.

While contemporary video games have come close to cinematic masterpieces, there's often nothing better than the fun and simplicity of retro classics. If you've never jumped into the world of emulation, this guide will take you through the very simple basics and have you up and running right away. We'll also take a quick look at ROM hacking so you can power up your emulation experience as well.

By the way, should you prefer to get this set up on your computer instead, check out this guide.

Before we get started, let's go over the basics. When you're talking about retro game emulation, you need two basics things: game ROMs and an emulator that can play them. A ROM is simply a copy of a game that exists as a file on your device. An emulator is an application that's capable of playing that ROM file on your device. Basically, you can think of a ROM as a virtual game cartridge and an emulator as a virtual console. Now that you know what you're dealing with, let's get started.

Get Your Emulators

Finding an emulator is pretty simple, but you may prefer some emulators over others. We're going to include our favorites for various platforms and, in some cases, a few alternatives if there's a good reason to check them out as well. If you are looking at an emulator we didn't recommend, remember that accuracy, performance, cheat code support, game pad support, and cross-platform compatibility are all things you'll want to consider.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN iOS AND ANDROID: Emulation on iOS requires jailbreaking. We won't have links to our iOS emulator recommendations for that reason. All you need to do, however, is open Cydia (the jailbreak app store) on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and search for the recommended option. From there you'll be able to download it and use it no problem.

Additionally, third-party controller support (like the Nintendo Wiimote) works differently on iOS and Android. Controller support is generally built into the app on iOS, but on Android you need to add a separate app that connects controllers as input devices. (If you have an Android tablet with Honeycomb 3.1 or later, however, you can connect some controllers via USB as well without the need for a helper app.) We'll discuss controllers a bit later, but in the following sections assume any reference to controller support refers to iOS.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
NESoid and John NES Lite (or John NES, if you don't want ads) are the two NES emulators you should check out on Android. Both offer plenty of features, are free, and but display controllers a little differently. NESoid provides an overlay and John NES separates the screen from the controller. (Both can map hardware keys and use other input devices, however, so this may not be relevant.) John NES also combs with support for Honeycomb, so it's a better option for you if you're using an Android tablet.

On iOS you're going to want to choose between two options. If you don't need third-party controller support, NES ($6) is a really great emulator. It has plenty of great features like autosave, game genie code support, and even an audio bass boost. If you do want third-party controller support, grab nes4iphone ($5). Both are good choices.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
SNES9X is our emulator of choice for both iOS and Android. To get SNES9X on iOS, you'll need to search for it in Cydia. To get it on Android, you'll need to go through a little more trouble as it was pulled from the marketplace for currently unknown reasons. Doing a web search for the SNES9X APK file should locate a copy. Alternatively, you can download SNESoid, which is based on the same code, but has its own controversy. SNES9X is great because it works with practically any ROM you can throw at it, supports both saved games and freeze states, allows for cheat codes, and lets you use third-party controllers like the Nintendo Wiimote.

Sega Genesis
For the iPhone and iPod touch you'll want to grab genesis4iPhone. You can use it on the iPad, too, but GENESIS A.D. Plus has proper support for the larger screen and provides a "mirror mode" so two people can play on each end of the iPad. Both apps offer Wiimote support, but genesis4iphone also works with iCade and iControlpad (which will discuss in-depth in the controller section later). If you're using iOS, you can also get a lot of official releases of Sega Genesis games from the iTunes App Store. Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage are just a few examples.

Unsurprisingly you have many more options on Android. Gensoid has always been one of the best, and now that it's free it's particularly more attractive. It performs well, provides network play over Bluetooth (on some devices with Android 2.1+), supports saved states, and more.

Sony Playstation
FPse is our pick for Android. It'll run you $4.20 (at the time of this writing) but performs well and is compatible with most games. It has full support for third-party controllers like iControlPad and Zeemote (more on these later) and even offers force-feedback.

Your choice on iOS is a bit easier because you only have one: psx4all. In our experience, it doesn't work that well with some games and has its performance issues. That said, when it does work for the game you want to play you get plenty of good features. It has Wiimote support (including support for the classic controller), in-app ROM downloads, save state and memory card support, native iPad support, and more.

Get Your ROMs

Before we start talking about downloadable ROMs, there are a few things you should know. First, there are two types of ROMs we're going to discuss: homebrew and official games. Homebrew ROMs are software created by individuals that are designed to run in a given emulator or on an actual retro gaming system. Official games are the cartridges you used to buy for your SNES, Sega Genenis, etc., after they've been converted into a digital file that you can play on your computer. The general rule of ethics when it comes to playing these official games is that you should own a real copy before downloading a ROM (or create your own, personal backup copy), but some companies (like Nintendo) believe this is actually not within your rights as a game owner. In this section we're going to point you to various resources for finding game ROMs. What you decide to do with this information is your choice.

Finding homebrew and game ROMs requires little more than a simple web search. If you're looking for Nintendo 64 ROMs, searching for "N64 ROMs" should turn up a variety of resources. You'll then be able to look through the site for the game you want and download it easily. Even though searching is simple, let's save you a little trouble. Here are some popular options for seeking out game ROMs:

EmuParadise provides game ROMs for virtually every console ever made, from the Bandai Wonderswan to the Sony Playstation 2. You generally have to click through a few screens to find a download link—which is sometimes not a link but a URL to a MegaUpload page—but the process always results in a download. If you download directly from the site rather than use MegaUpload, note that you'll only be able to download one file at a time.
CoolROM is another web-based resource for game ROM downloads that uses file mirrors for storage. It also comes with the bonus of letting you create a download queue (which is essentially a list of links, not a true queue) of ROMs you want to download.
Usenet, or the service everyone knows about that nobody is supposed to mention, is a decent source for game ROMs. If you've already set it up, just search a binary index site likeNZBMatrix or Newzbin for what you want. Some index sites have search filters that will let you look for ROMs by console, but note that a lot of older consoles (e.g. SNES) probably won't have specific games posted. This is because the ROMs are pretty tiny and you're more likely to find large game packs. If you can't find what you're looking for specifically, just search generically for game ROMs and you may be able to find nearly everything you're looking for in a single download.
BitTorrent pretty much offers the same ROM selection as Usenet. A tracker like Demonoidor even The Pirate Bay should turn up game packs easily.

Once you've got your ROMs, it's time to start gaming.

Set Up Your Emulator and Start Playing Your Games

You've got your emulators and you've got your ROMs, but now what? Playing a game is as simple as opening a ROM in its respective emulator, but there are a few things you should know before you jump in for the first time.

Using Hardware Controllers

Both iOS and Android emulators generally offer controller support. Wiimote (and Wii Classic Controller) support is the most common, but some iOS apps and Android devices support other options like the PS3 controller as well. Both platforms also offer support for third-party controllers specifically designed to work with mobile devices, like the iControlPad, iCade, and Zeemote(although iOS support depends on the specific emulator you're using). Regardless of the type of controller you want to use, the setup process is pretty different on iOS and Android. Here's what you need to know.

On iOS, the type of controller you're able to use depends on the emulator. Pretty much all iOS emulators now have support for the Nintendo Wiimote and the Wii Classic Controller, but many also support the iControlPad (and others). To find out, just visit the emulator's page in the Cydia store and your options will be listed with the emulator's other features. Almost every controller you'll be able to use requires Bluetooth, but iOS game emulators rely on different Bluetooth software than what's built-in to iOS. For this reason, you often have to disable Bluetooth in iOS' Settings app before you can pair controllers with an emulator. (This isn't always the case, but if you're having trouble it's the first thing you should try.) From there, just follow that emulator's instructions on how to pair your controller. For Wiimotes, this process almost always involves enabling Wiimote support in the app and pressing the 1 and 2 buttons on the controller until it is recognized by the emulator. When you're done, you can use it. The major downside, however, is that you'll probably have to re-pair the Wiimote every time you launch the app. It only takes a few seconds so it's not a big deal, but it can get annoying after awhile.

On Android, adding a controller is much different. If you're adding a USB gamepad and running Android 3.1, you can just plug it in and map all the buttons in your emulator. If you're using a Bluetooth controller, however, you'll need a separate app to be able to use it as an input device. Generally these apps require that you root your Android device, so follow our always up-to-date rooting guide if you haven't rooted already. To add support for certain controllers, just download the relevant app and follow its instructions for pairing. Wiimotes have a lot of options, butWiimote Controller has worked well for us. If you prefer a PS3 controller, SixAxis is what you'll need. In any case, check that your Android device is supported. These apps do not work with every device. Once you're paired, just open up any emulator and map the keys to your controller. While the process will vary, you generally do this by creating a new key profile and pressing the buttons on the controller as they correspond to the emulator's game buttons. Some emulators provide a separate configuration section for controllers, specifically, and it works in pretty much the same fashion. Just be sure to use that instead if it exists.

Understand Saved States and Freezes

When you played cartridge-based games as they were originally intended, they used to contain space for saved games. Emulators work a little differently, as they create the same saved game data in a separate file. For example, SNES ROMs are generally given the .smc file extension, whereas saved games receive the .srm file extension. This is particularly handy because you can exchange game save files with others. What's even better, though, is the ability to use frozen game states. A staple of most retro game emulator is the ability to press a button and create a game freeze at any point in the game. You'll be able to unfreeze this state whenever you want, making it possible to save even if the game doesn't allow it. While game save files will be created whenever the game needs to record your progress, freeze files require you to interact with the emulator. Before you start playing your first game, be sure to locate the freeze and defrost options in your emulator. They're generally prominently featured on the main screen or in the settings section. They should be very easy to find. Many also offer on-screen or gesture shortcuts so be sure to check if those exist in your emulator and learn them if they do.

Power Up Your Personal Arcade

Even though you're up and running, there's still more you can do to make your emulation experience better. Here are a few ways to take your portable arcade to the next level.

Cheat!

While it isn't always the case, many emulators provide emulated cheat systems as well. If you liked playing your games with the aid of a Game Genie or Game Shark, you still can with many emulators. Generally you'll see a dedicate cheat menu and entry system if your emulator has this common feature, so the only real obstacle is finding working cheat codes. What's pretty great is that the same sites you used back when you played the games with dedicated cheat hardware actually still exist and are good resources. The problem is that if you didn't create the ROM from your original copy of the game you won't necessarily know which codes will work. This means a lot of trial and error, but if you cheated back in the day you likely have developed that type of patience. If you don't know where to find cheat codes, here are some popular sources:

BSFree Code Archive contains about every code for every system and every game. It's archived the work of the Game Genie and Game Shark Code Creators Clubs and more.
GameGenie.com contains all the old Game Genie codes plus cheats/tips/tricks that can be performed without a(n emulated) cheat device.
GameFAQs is not only a great resource for finding walkthroughs for a particular game but also a resource for codes. It isn't code-focused or nearly as comprehensive as the previously mentioned sites, but you can sometimes find some good code compilations here (particularly for older games)
GameShark.com still keeps their code archive online for systems of the past, but you'll mainly find codes for newer consoles like the PS2 and GameCube.
The Code Hut is hosted on Angelfire, so you know it's an old school web site that's been around for awhile. It has over a decade of archived codes for older systems.

Emulators for the older retro systems, like NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, etc., will vary in how they accept codes. Because there were two primary competing cheat devices in the world at the time—the Game Genie and Pro Action Replay—some emulators implemented the format of one and not the other. That's fine because the codes just need conversion, which you can accomplish with utilities like GG2PAR and GGHex (Windows-only). You just need to check your emulator's documentation so you know which format it takes. Some will even take both and you won't have to do a thing.

Hack Your ROMs

When you want to go beyond playing your games, you can take the next step and hack them. However, hacking a game ROM can take several forms and you'll need a computer to do the work. Changing game graphics, editing levels, altering music, or adjusting character stats are all very different processes. It's an advanced task, but the basics aren't as complicated as you might think. We're only going to scratch the surface in this post, but if you're interested there will be some guides you can check out at the end. So, if ROM hacking is something you want to do, you'll first need to decide what you want to accomplish.

Editing character stats, for example, is something pretty easily accomplished in a HEX editor. Let's use Super Mario RPG as an example. If you want Mario to start off with a large amount of HP, FP, strength, defense, etc., you'd first need to start a new game and figure out what his starting starts are. These starting stats will be hard-coded into the game. You'll then need to convert his stats to HEX values (e.g. the number 100 is represented as 64 in HEX, and 255 is represented as FF) and then use the HEX editor to search your ROM for occurances of these stats. Let's say Mario's starting HP and maximum HP were 30 and his starting FP and maximum FP were 4. In theory you'd be looking for a string that looks like 1E1E1414 because that translates to 30, 30, 4, 4 (in this case). Not all games place their statistics in a logical order and it can sometimes be a challenge to find what you're looking for, but with a little trial and error you can alter your games in interesting ways with a few, tiny modifications. If you want to play around with HEX editing you can use any HEX editor you want (for the most part), butXVI32 (Windows) HEX Fiend (Mac OS X) are popular free options.

If you're interested in hacking something like the graphic sprites used in a particular game, however, HEX editing is obviously an awful way to go about it. You'll need specialized software, like Tile Layer Pro, to make meaningful changes. Generally if you're editing complex data you're going to need more complex software, but plenty is available. Google Music Store to Compete with iTunes in Near Future

Five months ago, after failing to reach agreements with record labels and publishers, Google launched a cloud based music service that was essentially a cloud based locker service for individuals who already owned music. Prior to launching the scaled down service, Google had negotiated with the music labels for over one year and eventually offered them $100 million for the rights to sell their music. At the time, Jamie Rosenberg, who is in charge of digital content for Google’s Android platform, said the following of the impasse:

“Unfortunately, a couple of the major labels were less focused on the innovative vision that we put forward, and more interested in an unreasonable and unsustainable set of business terms.”

Now, Google has reportedly re-initiated negotiations with music publishers and copyright holders to obtain the rights to sell music through an online music store that will compete with iTunes. There is speculation that Google is trying to reach contractual agreements and launch their music store and cloud storage in the next several weeks – prior to iTunes Match going live. However, iTunes Match is expected to be live by the end of October and it seems unlikely that Google will be able to reach agreements and roll-out the new service by then. Google’s current service, which requires users to upload individual songs to the cloud, is time consuming and inferior to the new iTunes Match service.

Yesterday, primarily due to increased advertising revenues from search, Google posted earnings that beat analysts’ expectations causing shares to rise in price over six percent. With pressure on Google to keep posting increasing profits each quarter, Google is exploring revenue models outside of search advertising. However, since Google must compete with Apple and Amazon, every dollar of additional revenue will be earned through hard work and innovation.

The lack of tactile feedback makes typing on a touchscreen difficult at the best of times, but the problem is even worse for blind and visually impaired users. That's set to change thanks to Adam Duran, a student on a summer course at Stanford University who has come up with aBraille keyboard for tablets.

The standard QWERTY keyboard on most tablets requires you to find small keys on a smooth, glass screen without any touchable clues to guide you. Instead, Duran's app offers a standard eight-key Braille keyboard that appears wherever you place your fingers on the screen.

That means you don't have to worry about locating the keys and can just start typing Braille code, in which combinations of the keys are used to type letters, numbers, and symbols. The tablet provides feedback by reading out each letter as it is typed. Users can also choose from a variety of specialised keyboard layouts, such as one for chemical formulae.

Currently, Braille typists rely on expensive dedicated devices that can cost over $6,000 and have few other uses. "Your standard tablet has more capability at a tenth the price," says Duran, but adds there are "technical and legal hurdles to address" before the keyboard becomes widely available.

Three-way race to reach lost Antarctic lakes

Antarctic researchers are set to make first contact with long-lost lakes deep beneath the continent's ice – closely followed by second and third contact. Three expeditions will attempt to enter the hidden lakes over the next two years, in search of unknown kinds of life that have evolved in isolation. The projects could also determine if or when the west Antarctic ice sheet will collapse – one of the worst-case scenarios in future climate change.

Over the next few months a team from the British Antarctic Survey, based in Cambridge, UK, and other institutions will set up drilling equipment on the ice above Lake Ellsworth. They will return late next year to drill into the lake.

Ellsworth is buried under 3 kilometres of ice, in what was once a fjord. The team will break in by firing a jet of hot water into the ice. "We can get through those 3000 metres of ice in about three days," says lead scientist Martin Siegert of the University of Edinburgh, UK. The hot-water drill should also minimise contamination of the lake, as the melted pristine ice from the bottom of the borehole is cleaned and then used in the jet.

The hole will stay open for only 24 hours. During that time the team will lower in a probe to retrieve samples of water and sediment. A second probe will drill into the sediment on the lake floor and retrieve a core. Afterwards the hole will naturally close up. "It will be as if we were never there," Siegert says.

"We're confident we'll find life in the sediments," says Martyn Tranter of the University of Bristol, UK, but life in the nutrient-poor water is less likely. Tranter says any living things will be bacteria, perhaps feeding on sulphides from ground-up rock in the sediments.

Race to the finish

The Ellsworth team are not the first to seek life in an Antarctic lake. Last year a Russian expedition drilled to within 29 metres of the surface of Lake Vostok, which lies 3750 metres below the ice of east Antarctica. They were forced to stop when winter closed in, but will resume drilling in January.

When they break into the lake early next year, its water should rise up the hole and refreeze. They will return late next year to get samples from this fresh ice – a sampling technique that is designed to minimise the human contamination.

Antarctica's plumbing

The third project, WISSARD, will drill into west Antarctica's Lake Whillans. Unlike Vostok and Ellsworth, which have been isolated for tens of thousands of years, Lake Whillans is part of an extensive network of lakes and channelsrunning under the ice, and is much more active.

"We know it fills with water and discharges," says Ross Powell of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. It is "part of the plumbing" that collects water from streams under the ice and releases it into the sea.

The WISSARD team will spend two Antarctic summers setting up and testing their equipment before drilling into Lake Whillans in 2013 and 2014 using the same hot-water method as the Ellsworth team. Powell plans to observe the lake filling and discharging, and monitor how that affects the ice sheet above. The team will also send down a robot to explore the lake.

Collapsing ice sheet

The Ellsworth and Whillans projects will both help to answer the critical questions about whether, or when, rising global temperatures will cause the west Antarctic ice sheet to collapse.

Glaciers in the ice sheet have been disappearing for years. If the sheet collapses, sea levels will rise at least 3 metres, and possibly as much as5 metres, swamping low-lying areas worldwide.

The sediment core from Lake Ellsworth should tell us when the ice sheet last collapsed, says Dominic Hodgson of the British Antarctic Survey. The sediment deposited while the ice sheet has been present will have been ground-up rock, but when it was absent, marine sediment will have been deposited instead. "That provides a marker," Hodgson says, which can then be matched to temperature records obtained from ice cores.

Hodgson suspects the last collapse was 110,000 to 120,000 years ago. At the time temperatures in Antarctica were 6 °C warmer than today, and seas were 6.6 metres higher.

Alternatively the last collapse may have occurred 400,000 years ago – the warmest period of the past 500,000 years. "That would indicate that the west Antarctic ice sheet is more resilient," Hodgson says.

"What we'd really like is a continual record going back 2.5 million years," Siegert says. "That would tell us it's really robust." Hodgson thinks this is unlikely, however, because Antarctic ice loss is the only explanation we have for the rise in sea levels 120,000 years ago.

Kidney recipients freed from lifelong drugs

People who get a kidney transplant usually face a life sentence of drugs that suppress their immune systems – otherwise, their body will reject the new organ. A new cellular therapy could change that.

Immunosuppressant drugs can have severe side effects, increasing the risk of heart disease, infection, cancer and diabetes. So as well as saving money,dispensing with them would bring major health benefits.

Samuel Strober at Stanford University in California and colleagues seem to have worked out how to do it. Following transplant surgery, Strober's team first give patients ordinary immunosuppressive drugs, such as cyclosporine. They then apply mild radiation to the lymph nodes, spleen and thymus to further weaken the immune system. This kills some but not all of the patient's white blood cells.

They also inject antibodies which temporarily destroy the patient's most aggressive white blood cells. "We preferentially delete 'naive T cells', since they are the main subset of white blood cells that reject grafts," Strober says.

Another donation

About 10 days after the transplant, Strober injects the patient with millions of white blood cells extracted from the kidney donor. These include CD34+ stem cells, which can multiply and become part of the recipient's own immune system.

Once donor blood cells mix with recipient immune cells, they blunt the immune attack by a process called negative selection, says Strober, who has spent 30 years developing the regimen.

In negative selection, the thymus presents proteins from foreign tissue to immune cells, in effect asking them, "Do you recognise this material?" If enough immune cells recognise the tissue, those that don't are screened out and killed. Because donated immune cells recognise the foreign tissue from the transplanted kidney, the thymus gets rid of the recipient's own T-cells that could otherwise attack the kidney.

Strober monitors the recipient's blood regularly to check that the two immune systems are mixing properly, and there is no sign of rejection.

After a month, the first of two immunosuppressive drugs is withdrawn. The second is withdrawn at six months.

Three years free

Eight of Strober's 12 trial patients have now been free of immunosuppressive treatment for up to three years, although one died after three years from a heart attack unrelated to the treatment.

The other four are still on immunosuppressive drugs, but are being monitored to see if they too can break free. "So far, they've failed to meet our strict drug withdrawal criteria," says Strober.

Close match

One caveat is that all patients received donations from closely matched relatives. But Strober is confident that the regimen will work with unmatched donations too, which would greatly expand the number of organs available for the procedure. "Our preclinical lab results show that we can use mismatched recipients as well as matched, and that gives us confidence to move ahead," he says.

Although 17,000 people receive kidneys in the US each year, more than 400,000 are on the waiting list and rely on dialysis machines, so the shortage of available organs remains acute.

Strober's procedure is not the only one to free patients from anti-rejection drugs. In 2008 a team led by David Sachs at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston reported a technique involving a bone marrow transplantfrom organ donors, which worked in four of five patients – some of them have now been free of drugs for eight years.

Sachs says that Strober's work is encouraging, but points out that his own patients all received unmatched transplants, overcoming a greater immunological challenge. "The success rate they've reported is similar to what our studies have achieved for mismatched transplants," he says. "So it will be interesting to see the results of Strober's new trial."

One advantage of Strober's approach is that it is milder and less traumatic for the recipient than having a bone marrow transplant in addition to a kidney transplant, says Maggie Dallman, an immunologist at Imperial College London. But, like Sachs, she says that "the real test will come when this is used for mismatched organs".

Spit bacteria could cause of pancreatic cancer

Saliva does more than just break down your lunch. It could be key to screening for pancreatic cancer too.

The notoriously aggressive cancer has received a lot of publicity in recent years with the deaths of Patrick Swayze and Steve Jobs, both of whom suffered from the disease.

Now, researchers have found that looking for certain bacteria in the mouth could lead to earlier diagnoses and save lives.

A team led by James Farrell of the University of California, Los Angeles, compared the bacteria in the mouths of 10 healthy people with those in 10 people with pancreatic cancer. They found significant differences in the microbe populations in each group.

These changes could be used to trigger a check for pancreatic cancer. "It's the canary in the coal mine, an early-warning signal," says Bruce Paster at the Forsythe Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who worked with Farrell to identify the bacteria in the samples. "If you have a disease [such as cancer], it's not usually just restricted to the pancreas or the intestine. Your whole body is affected – things change," he says.

Locked out

In this case, changes occurred to the epithelial cells that line cavities in the body, including the mouth. These cells contain receptors that accept certain bacteria only – like a lock waiting for the right key. When a bacterium with thecorrect-shaped key – called an adhesin – comes by, it attaches itself to the corresponding epithelial cell. "Good" bacteria like this provide us with a shield against more unpleasant, disease-causing microbes.

The epithelial cells of people with pancreatic cancer seem to change shape, allowing more bad bacteria to take up residence in the mouth. Out of thehundreds of bacteria that live there, two species that are usually abundant in a healthy mouth – Neisseria elongata and Streptococcus mitis – were significantly scarcer in people with pancreatic cancer.

Farrell says that the team cannot be sure if the bacterial population shift is a cause or effect of the cancer. "We cannot conclude that [certain bacteria in the mouth] makes someone more likely to develop pancreatic cancer," saysAdam Roberts, a molecular microbiologist at University College London.

But he says that the finding is an important step towards quick, non-invasive screenings for this and other diseases. "The possibility of being able to screen spit for certain bacteria to predict cancer is a really attractive proposition. It would result in early detection, which would inevitably save lives."

Farrell is validating his findings with a larger group of volunteers with the intention of creating such a tool. Paster is also working with Michael Docktor at the Forsythe Institute and Athos Bousvaros at the Children's Hospital Boston to identify other diseases, such as Crohn's disease, where changes in oral bacteria may act as a diagnostic tool.

Sickle cell disease cured by gene knock-out

Switching off a single gene can help treat sickle cell disease by keeping the blood forever young. The illness is caused by a mutant form of adult haemoglobin, but not by fetal haemoglobin. Targeting BCL11A, the gene responsible for the body's switch-over from fetal to adult haemoglobin, effectively eliminates the condition in mice.

The mutant form of adult haemoglobin forms long sticky chains inside red blood cells. The cells containing these chains can clog small blood vessels, depriving organs of oxygen and causing pain. In severe cases, sickle cell disease can be fatal. Tricking the body into make fetal haemoglobin again can alleviate symptoms, though.

That's because fetal haemoglobin does not form sticky chains. However, it is produced in the body only during development in the womb and in the six months following birth. It has a higher affinity for oxygen than adult haemoglobin, vital in allowing the developing fetus to "steal" oxygen from its mother's blood.

Stuart Orkin of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues, knocked out the BCL11A gene from mice belonging to a strain that normally develops a sickle cell-like condition. As adults, the mice produced over 20 times more fetal haemoglobin than normal and their blood contained almost no sickle-shaped cells. Their spleen and kidneys – organs easily damaged by the effects of the disease – were almost completely healthy.

Bound and gagged

Gene therapy to block the action of BCL11A in humans could in theory provide similar benefits. Specially designed lengths of RNA, injected into the bloodstream, could bind with the BCL11A gene and silence it. This approach, however, would be expensive and impractical on a large scale. "The long-term goal is to have a drug that can effectively block the function of BCL11A," says Orkin. "It's a more challenging approach, but one that could be applied to large populations."

Other treatments designed to encourage the production of fetal haemoglobin have been suggested over the years. One drug in particular – hydroxyurea – is widely used but has many side effects including reducing the levels of white blood cells.

Apple has just issued a press release confirming they have topped one million pre-orders for the iPhone 4S in 24 hours. This surpasses the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4. It also comes after AT&T on Friday confirmed processing over 200,000 preorders in the first 12 hours alone. Apple quoted its worldwide marketing honcho Phil Schiller in the release:

CUPERTINO, California—October 10, 2011—Apple® today announced pre-orders of its iPhone® 4S have topped one million in a single day, surpassing the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4. iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri™, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking.

iPhone 4S will be available at all 245 Apple retail stores in the US beginning at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, October 14. Every customer who buys an iPhone 4S at an Apple retail store will be offered free Personal Setup service, helping them customize their iPhone 4S by setting up email, showing them new apps from the App Store™ and more, so they’ll be up and running with their new iPhone before they leave the store.

iPhone 4S comes in either black or white and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the new 64GB model.* iPhone 4S will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and select Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 4 is available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 3GS is available for free with a two year contract.

NASA Awards the Largest Prize in Aviation History to an All-Electric, Super-Efficient Aircraft

NASA has awarded the single largest prize handed down in aviation history to Team Pipistrel-USA.com for designing and demonstrating its Taurus G4 electric aircraft. Per the rules of the NASA- and Google-sponsored CAFE Green Flight Challenge, Pipistrel’s Taurus G4 covered 200 miles in less than 2 hours and did so on the electricity equivalent of less than one gallon of fuel per passenger, scoring $1.35 million for the effort.

But the cash, substantial though it may be, is only part of the story here. The CAFE (that’s Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency) Challenge was created to push aircraft engineers toward new, more efficient airplane designs that would perhaps usher in a new era of ultra-efficient flight, based on either electric engines or extremely efficient fuel-burning engines.

So while you can argue the day belongs to Pipistrel--and we certainly don’t mean to diminish that achievement--the CAFE Foundation and NASA are the real winners here. Consider: The challenge asked teams to average 100 miles per hour over two hours, and to do so on the equivalent of one gallon of gas. Not only did Pipistrel manage this, but so did California-based e-Genius with its electric-powered plane (for which it netted a second place prize of $120,000).

The kicker: both teams did so on just a little more than a half-gallon of fuel equivalent. That means both Pipistrel and e-Genius did twice as well as NASA and CAFE asked them to do (and Pipistrel slightly better than e-Genius, hence the distribution of prizes).

That’s pretty amazing, considering that just a few years ago engineers were still trying to figure out how to get an all-electric powered plane into the air for any considerable length of time, much less at sustained triple-digit speeds and while using very little energy.

Our jetliners aren’t going green just yet of course. But the winning teams in the CAFE Green FLight Challenge collectively spent just two years and $4 million on two aircraft that have pushed the electric airplane field forward by a considerable step. Imagine what ten years and some serious investment might do for the electric aircraft space.

Best way to remotely control your desktop PC, MAC, iPhone, tablet PC, Android

Its the best application to control Windows or Mac, from iPhone, Android or even remotely control your PC or MAC from another MAC or PC. As you can see in the video, you can not only play videos or audio files but also attempt to play something 3D.

From what I did not realize, however, is that Splashtop has also launched an application for Windows that allows us to connect to another machine with Windows or OS X.

This gives versatility to Splashtop as its plateform independent ans is available in Windows and could be a way, for example, to run some games in a netbook that originally could not. Same with running HD videos, which usually would not work in any normal netbook or tablet PC.

In addition, it is a great way to work with another PC, as it give us a near-native speed of the OS.

In summary, highly recommended, if you need to work with remote desktops. Or a great way to start working with them.
