New music video for "Fragility"

Cognition has just released a music video for "Fragility", a song from the upcoming album, which is expected later this year. The video was filmed in the Czech Republic in a chapel containing the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people artistically arranged throughout the chapel.

Cognition has made the switch from 6-string to 7-string guitar and way, way lower tuning. The first song featuring the new Cognition sound is soon to be released, and it is called "Viva Mexico", featuring Vassilakis Kostas from InfraVision on drums once again. I just received the drum track today, and it sounds heavy! Stay tuned!

While working on the mixes and masters for the EP, I've also dusted off some Cognition footage filmed in Cambridge last year. Today I've finished editing a music video for the song "Omnipotent". I need to give myself a break from it. I'll double check tomorrow that it looks ok, then I'll upload it. While I remember last year having a very clean and pristine look in mind, I ended up going in the opposite direction with this. More to come...

Mixing and Mastering the EP!

Mixing and Mastering the coming EP. Got 5 tracks. I´m pretty excited about this one. It´s on a whole a lot more aggressive than the debut album. It´s less varied compared to the incredibly over the top variation on the debut album. But within the confines of the sound, the songs are more varied. I guess Cognition 2012 might best be described as "Modern Metal". Anyway, I´m trying to see if I can finish up the mixing and mastering this weekend. If I manage to do so, the EP should be out there for you to stream on Spotify, buy digitally on iTunes, or on CD.... by the end of March.

The evolution of songwriting procedures and approaches

It´s interesting to look back at your songwriting procedures and approaches as you progress as a songwriter over the years. I remember when I first started out writing music, it was so easy and uncomplicated to write a song, but of course the results were lacking in some respects. Last night I spent a couple of hours working on one single part in the middle of a song, painstakingly working on it until it fit into the whole. It started out being a reasonably aggressive death metal oriented part, but it did not gel with the part that was before. I started working on my 2nd guitar line on top, then changing the rhythm guitars, and I ended up keeping only a small portion of the original part. But what I ended up with fits perfectly into the song, and it´s exciting to listen to. There was nothing wrong with the death metal oriented part I started with, but it didn´t transition perfectly with the part before, and it wasn´t ridiculously exciting to listen to. It was fine. But what I ended up with was stellar. When I started out as a songwriter, I would have gone for that first part and that would be the end of it. I like to think that I´ve evolved a great deal since I started writing songs and that my music is far better as a result. I think people will agree when they hear the EP.

Working on a new song for the EP

I think I'll make that 4 track EP a 5 track one. Started working on a new tune last night, and am getting fired up. The EP is going to be really different from the debut album. It won't be as over the top varied. On a whole, it's a bit heavier than the album, I'd say. I think the closest point of reference would be the song "Omnipotent", except the sound has evolve quite a lot. The song I'm working on right now blends Modern Metal with Black Metal. Am excited about getting this out there :)

A 4 track EP is ready...ish. I´m just still mixing it. Still want to do it myself, the mixing part, ´cause I enjoy it, and the only way to get better at something is to keep on doing it. This time around I might see if I can get a third party to Master it for me, though. I always Master myself as well, but I know for a fact that the listening environment for Cognition´s current studio location is not optimal. Not sure how long it´ll take me to work on these mixes, as I´m working on a few projects for other people as well at the moment. In other news, the next Cognition release after the 4 track EP is likely to be tuned down to C. But for now, mixing...!

Backing vocals for Celldweller

In other news, the Cognition album status is
-All tracks recorded and mixed.
-Scheduled to be mixed a second time and them finally mastered.
-The artwork for the CD is about 75% done.

Mix, Master, Repeat

The album has been completed for a while. It will feature 12 tracks and a cosmic artwork by Sherar.

It has been mixed and mastered once. This process is to repeat once or twice throughout August.

Sherar has been working on some genredefying artwork of cosmic proportions. He has sent me two ideas, and I'm trying to make up my mind which one best reflects the music and the album title: Omnipotent.

Exciting times.

Final mix down of the album

The album will feature 11 or 12 tracks. One of them needs the vocals to be recorded before it's done. All other tracks are going through the final mix stages. July will complete the mixes and masters. The front cover art has been completed by LDG Sherar. Everything should be completed and ready for the album to be sent off for duplciation by August. Polishing an old gem

There are 10 tracks intended to go on the album. This is all well and good, but being that these are fairly fast, short and sweet in-your-face songs, I figured I could use a few more tracks to up the playing length of the album.

I've always been fond of this song I wrote 3-4 years ago. I was fed up with taking my own work so seriously, writing guitar tablatures for all my songs and most of the time putting some thought into my lyrics, and that sort of thing. So I slammed a microphone in front of a small Peavey amp and wrote and recorded a few songs on my laptop, fuelled by energy and frustration. The sound was horrible, but the songs had something direct, spontaneous and fun about them.

Fast forward 3-4 years, and I still think one of those songs was not bad. So I listened through the thing and wrote a guitar tablature. I re-recorded the guitars, properly this time, and it really did liven up the track! I'm planning to keep the original vocal tracks. The quality is not the best, but there's something about the performance, a spontaneity.

I'll have the bass done by Will tomorrow, and will have to spend some time mixing, then the track should be good to go on the album.

The title: "Pain and Suffering" :)

Some song titles from the upcoming album

Things are progressing nicely with the Cognition album. While each of the previous CDs have had their specific sound, 'Alienation' being the most synth oriented and 'Apocalyptic' being far more guitar based and with more aggressive influences, the upcoming CD will be the most varied release to date. It is a continuation of the more guitar oriented approach of 'Apocalyptic' but is far more varied. This is not one of those albums where each song blends together ten genres. It's one of those albums where each song has a different flavour. On a whole, there will be influences from Death Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, Punk, Industrial... There is even a track featuring a didgeridoo (real, not sampled). It's not decided whether that track will make it on or not...
