Chapter 1: The Calling

The mournful chant reverberated through the small four walls of the hut…” Aieeeee”.

Guinnaban - 9 at that time - was cowering in the eerie shadows. He was staring at the wiry, old woman who was weeping for the gaunt, pale corpse laid on the long table. The head of the corpse was at a grotesque angle, almost totally severed from his body.

“Uma nangwa kansika anna?” (Who have done this to you?) The woman wailed even louder.

“Aiieeeeee…..” everyone joined in, and the hut became a cacophony of mournful cries.

The barrio captain motioned to the elders for a conference and they filed outside, their faces grim and murderous. Under the shades of a tamarind tree, a heated and frenzied debate took place.

Finally, the barrio captain raised his arm and shouted amidst the din, “Intakkon no, umma uwayon yo, ittod tako kanida de kingwada.”(Then, what are we waiting for? Let’s avenge his death.)

And so a full blown tribal war had begun.

Guinnaban, grew amidst this bloody chaos. The tribal war was between two warring tribes, who both fought for domination over the municipality.

Nevertheless, he accepted it as a way of life: the constant refuge in the deep forest in the stillness of the night when the enemies had come to attack, and the strict observation of the code of silence, even when all he had wanted was to shout at the top of his voice at the injustice of it all - these had become routine occurrences for him.

And at age 10, he had stood as a sentinel during one of the night watches, keeping an eye of any attack from the other tribe.

The enemies did not select their victims. Women and children were not spared by their avenging spears and bolos. Men had their heads always severed from their bodies, as a symbol of victory.

The victor would bring home the grotesque, bloody head and would proudly display it like a trophy in their barrio plaza. Then, the warriors would dance gleefully around it till the wee hours of dawn. During those ancient times, head-hunting was normal and considered a warrior's noble deed.

Controlling people can only control you if you allow them to. For you to know how to deal with them, you have to know this basic fact. These individuals are almost always present in any workplace. Some people may actually prod these people through their own reactions. It is easy to deal with them once you realize that a lot depends upon you. Here are pointers to help you deal with this type of people

When you say no, mean it

Learn how to say no, and mean it. If the controlling person wants you to do something you do not want to do, firmly say no. Do not budge no matter how much pressure he applies on you. Show him that he would not be able to change your mind. Once he gets this fact into his mind, he would realize that he could not control you just as he wanted to. Every time you do this, it sends a clear message to him, and he would eventually stop forcing you to do something you do not want to do.

Show him you are not a push-over

Demonstrate through your actions and words that you are not a push-over by standing your ground when you believe you are right. It does not matter whether you are alone or not regarding a certain issue. Strong people take a stand and are not afraid to defend their position. If he observes that you have a strong personality, he would not bother you, unless he decides to go against you. If he does, react calmly and confidently. Remember, controlling people could only affect you to the extent that you allow them to.

Do not be afraid to talk to him boldly

If he persists in wanting to control you, talk to him candidly about his behavior. Perhaps, he may not be aware of it. Be diplomatic about it. There is no need to attack him verbally or to use hurting words. In a calm manner, tell him how you feel. You could say; “I don’t like how you try to control me. You may not succeed on the first try but do not give up. Your persistence would pay off eventually. These actions should be done not in anger or in a burst of passion.

If you do these steps in a calm manner, your actions would show him that he is not affecting you significantly. This would grant him less power.

Controlling people are only after those they can twirl around their fingers. If you show him firmly that you do not welcome his actions, he would stop bothering you.

The Simple View of the Scientific Method in Philosophy

The philosophy of science has been widely used by researchers in the quest for facts that exist on earth. It is one of the methods that is also commonly utilized in scientific endeavors. Philosophers, such as Aristotle and Francis Bacon, view it as an accurate observation of an event without any bias or preconceived notions. It should be based on logical deductions that could be demonstrated. It could be further explained in these simple statements.

Scientific methods make use of experimentation

Francis Bacon, the Father of Experimental Science, believes that to determine facts, one should derive facts from experimentation. The results observed should be based on empirical methods. Before you can experiment, however, you have to know basic principles or “first principles.” These are already established facts based on induction or deduction.

Induction is the process where you arrive at a conclusion through the observation of specific outcomes followed by general outcomes, while deduction is from general to specific observations. The most preferred is the induction method because it is simpler and more organized.

Scientific methods usually use hypotheses to explain propositions Scientists discover facts by searching for explanations for certain phenomena. Johann Galle discovered the planet Neptune through deduction. He did this by proposing that since Uranus has an erratic behavior, and was not following Kepler’s law of planetary motion; there must be a distant body that exerts gravitational pull on Uranus, and he discovered Neptune.

Newton’s Law of Motion has elucidated Kepler’s law of gravitation and Galileo’s law of acceleration. Newton created a hypothesis and through deduction arrived at his more specific facts and one of them is that:

“Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.”

Scientific methods employ organized and well documented steps

The processes are arranged chronologically and results and the empirical data or observations are well documented. There are valid explanations to the arrangement of the steps, which are discussed in detail. The hypotheses serve as a proposed explanation to an existing problem or fact. At every step, the details of the observations should be recorded properly.

In the nineteenth century, Pierre Duhem argued that philosophy as a science should not only be concerned with observations but should also deal with theoretical frameworks and ‘interlocking group of hypotheses.” Duhem countered Newton’s deductive method.

As the world evolves into the 21st century of computers and techno gadgets, the scientific method in Philosophy also takes in a new form. The important thing to remember is that the scientific method would generally require first principles, deductions or inductions, logical and organized frameworks, hypotheses, and the proper records of the observations of these various steps.

Nowadays, medicine has expanded to various disciplines; doctors now have their own specializations. During the old days, when a patient paid a visit to his doctor, he expected his doctor to be able to diagnose all his conditions.

Presently, however, there are different doctors for each of the body’s vital organs. There are cardiologists for the heart, nephrologists for the kidneys, Physiatrists for physical disabilities, and a lot more kinds of doctors in specific fields.

Whether you are a student, who would like to pursue medicine, or a patient planning to visit his doctor, it is imperative that you should know what specific field of medicine you are interested in.

They have undergone two to five years of training, depending on the licensing body.

Pacquiao, who is now a duly elected senator in the Philippines, just recently defeated Jessie Vargas, the WBO Welterweight champion, on November 5, 2016. He won the WBO Welterweight boxing title for the 3rd time.

Now, 38, the senator is busy with his duties to his country. He has been lauded for his significant participation in the senate hearings of controversial national issues. Reportedly, he is still not retiring from boxing.

Being ranked 1 among the Best Fighters in the world is an amazing feat that no Filipino or Asian boxer of this generation was able to achieve.

How to Strengthen Family Bonds

Organize activities together with your neighbor One effective way of strengthening your family bond is to organize an outing with your neighbor’s family. It could be an overnight stay at the beach on a weekend. Follow these steps and you will be at the beach in no time with your neighbor:

a) Talk to your neighbor about the idea and wait for the signal. When they have agreed on it
b) Let both families know of the plan.
c) Plan with them how you are going to do it. Who will prepare the food, what activities are you going to have at the beach all day and so on.
d) Go to the beach. In the morning, you can go for water skiing, volleyball at the beach then have lunch together.

In the afternoon, you can do some fun competition like sack race and more between families. In the evening, you can arrange for a barbecue party.

In doing this, your kids are actually observing how the other family is interacting and supporting each other in all the activities that you did. If the family you are with is a family that has a strong bond, your kids will be influenced to do the same. Your responsibility to get your family closer is easier to do after this experience.

Involve yourself with your kid’s friends and families

Get to know your kid’s friends and families. You will feel more comfortable when you know whom your kid is spending time with and who are the families of these friends.

When you do, you will come to trust them and allow your kid to be with his friends’ families on an overnight. Your kid will learn bonding, caring and love from these families which will soon be manifested in yours.

Here is how you to be involved in your kid’s friends and families

a) Ask your kid to arrange a meeting with the mothers of his friends for a coffee near the school where they are going. Get to know them well and see if these are people that your kid should mingle with. It is not that you are looking down on other families, but you would like to be sure that your kid is in good hands.

b) Gain the trust of the mothers of your kid’s friends by being sincere with them. You do not need to explain why you are befriending them, they know why you are doing it and they appreciate it. They also wanted to do that, but you were faster than them. So do not worry about what they are thinking about you taking the first step to talk to them.

c) If you are comfortable with the mothers, you can suggest a family gathering to get to know the families of your kid’s friends.

When you established friendship between families, it is now easier to deal with your kid’s whereabouts, you can easily talk to her about his friends and activities.

d) Invite his friends for an overnight stay in your house on a Friday night. Prepare good meals for them and let them have fun.

Make sure to call their parents to inform them what their kids are doing at the time of the call. Assure them that their kids are safe with you.

In doing this, you are cementing the bond that you have with your kid. He will feel more comfortable with you since he knows that you are with him in his choice of friends.

It will also mean you will approve of his activities with his friends.

MANILA, Philippines – PRC has released the results of the October 2016 Licensure Examination for Certified Public Accountants or CPA Board Exams. Angeles University Foundation (AUF) and Holy Angel University (HAU) graduates from Angeles City, Pampanga were among the Topnotchers.

ALMER IÑIGO ALFONZO BONZON of Holy Angel University, garnered 5th place with 92.83%; while NIKKA ROSE MAGTOTO GESMUNDO and GERALD OCAMPO MICLAT from the same university have ranked 9th place with 92.17%.

Meanwhile, JOHN MICHAEL PIKE MICLAT, a graduate of Angeles University Foundation, Angeles City, has been ranked 9th, as well.

Out of the 14,390 graduates, who took the exams, only 5,249 passed (36.48%).

AUF Ranked 4th Among Schools in Physicians’ Board Exams on September 2016

MANILA, Philippines – PRC has released the results of the Physician Licensure Examinations (Doctors’ Board Exams) given on September 2016.

Angeles University Foundation (AUF), the premier university in Central Luzon, garnered 96% (48/50), competing with well-known universities nationwide, such as, Ateneo de Manila Univ. School of Med and Public Health, Pasig with 95.08%; Cebu Institute of Medicine with 97.56%; University of the Philippines, Manila with 98.67%.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and St Luke’s College of Medicine are ranked #1 for obtaining 100% passing rate. Among these Med schools.

AUF is ranked 4th among medical schools nationwide.

Top Performing Schools; Physician Licensure Examinations held on September 2016:

Meanwhile, Shin Min-ah won the Outstanding Korean Actress Award for “Oh, My Venus”. Some fans had expected Song Hye Kyo to win the female counterpart of Song Joong-ki's award, but she didn't. Hye Kyo was Joong-ki's love interest in "Descendants of the Sun."

“Descendants of the Sun” was awarded also the Excellent Korean Wave Drama, and the Best Korean Wave Drama Theme Song or Outstanding Korean OST Award for “You Are My Everything”, the TV series’ theme song sang by Gummy.

The TV series became so popular all over Asia and in other parts of the globe, making Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo superstars of Asia.

Azat Seitmetov of Kazakhstan won the Best Actor Award for “Father”, and Samia Sassi from France won the Best Actress Award for “Don’t Leave Me”.

Train to Busan: A Box Office Success; Fans Request Part 2 of the Film

“Train to Busan” is a Box Office success in its international showing; and fans from all over the world are requesting for a part 2 of the zombie-thriller Korean film.

In Korea, it set a record as the highest single day grossing movie with $9.90 million.

In Taiwan, “Train to Busan” has set a record for Korean films with $952,000 gross within two days. It toppled the previous record set by “My Sassy Girl” and “A Tale of Two Cities”.

The film also topped the box office in Singapore, Hongkong and Vietnam, and has been distributed in the U.S., Australia, Germany, India and many more countries.

In Singapore, “Train to Busan” was able to displace the Hollywood blockbuster, “Suicide Squad”, from its top 1 rank in the box office, to reign supreme in the tills.

These outstanding box office records of “Train to Busan” have demonstrated that it’s not an ordinary zombie movie.

It depicts the realities of life and how the individual characters emerged into ‘heroes” amidst the horror of pursuing zombies.

Unlike other zombie movies, there’s more drama in “Train to Busan” – a heartbreaking plot that would draw the viewer into a roller-coaster ride all throughout the film. Yet, it’s thrilling and fast-paced at the same time, as well.

Almost all the elements you want to watch in a film are integrated by the talented writer and director.

Some wanted to witness the daughter and mother reunion at the end of the story, but the director had wisely left that to the audience's imagination.

The ending of the movie was “swift’ and “neat”, and urges the movie-goer to use his own muse and fecund mind to arrive at a rational conclusion.

Even Rotten Tomatoes – which is popular in giving low critical reviews - has given 93% to “Train to Busan”. It has also scored 92% from more than 3,000 users.

According to Rotten Tomatoes:

"Critics Consensus: Train to Busan delivers a thrillingly unique -- and purely entertaining -- take on the zombie genre, with fully realized characters and plenty of social commentary to underscore the bursts of skillfully staged action.”

Med Tech Board Passers on August 2016, Released by PRC

MANILA, Philippines - PRC has released the results/list of the Med Tech board passers. This is for the Medical Technologists Licensure Examinations held on August 2016 in key cities nationwide.

The Med Tech Board Topnotchers are the following:

Angeles University Foundation (AUF) in Angeles City, Pampanga is ranked #2 among all Med. Tech. schools nationwide.

Classes Suspended in Angeles City on August 17, 2016, Wednesday

ANGELES CITY, Pampanga – Classes are suspended in all levels (public and private) in Angeles City, tomorrow, August 17, 2016, Wednesday.

This came as a surprise, since classes had resumed last Tuesday, August 16, 2016, despite the "No Classes" announcement of Gov. Pineda for the province of Pampanga.

Reportedly, Mayor Ed Pamintuan issued a public advisory at 9 pm, August 16.

“With the orange rainfall alert warning, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan has declared the SUSPENSION of classes in Angeles City in all levels in both public and private tomorrow, Wednesday, 17 August 2016.”

People in low lying areas are advised to evacuate to higher grounds as floods continue to wreak havoc.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses had reported a whirlwind that had occurred for a few minutes in Manila. It had injured a couple of persons and had destroyed some houses.

AUF PT Grad Tops Board Exams

JAMES MICHAEL MANANSALA HERNANDEZ, a Physical Therapy graduate from Angeles University Foundation (AUF), had topped the Board Exams given this August 2016, with a rating of 90.25%.

During college James has been a consistent academic scholar and a campus leader. He is also a deeply religious person, who loves to express his passion and piousness through music and similar activities.

On one of his FB posts, he composed an enlightening passage that deserves to be shared:

“To all those facing adversity and doubt, remember that the Lord sees your efforts. Do not allow your decisions to be based on what other people expect or push you to do.

Do not stoop down to the level of those who mock you, because the Lord is your Judge. Dedicate your work to Him, the Lifter of our heads, our Great Advocate.

One great thing about God is that He's the most worthy One to judge us, yet He is the quickest One to show grace and direct our path. In the face of adversity, God is with us.”

Asked what he has to say to readers, he said:

“If everything seems impossible, and everything seems to be going against you, just put your trust in Jesus because He is with you.”

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) had announced that out of the 1,243 examinees 846 had passed the Physical Therapist Licensure Examination. Meanwhile, the Occupational Therapist Licensure Examination had 114 passers out of 229 examinees.

The Licensure Examinations were given by the Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy in Baguio City, Cebu City and Manila this August 2016.

The other PT Board Topnotchers are the following.

Angeles University Foundation graduates had consistently topped national licensure examinations in different courses. In the recent Med Tech Boards, El Marie Salunga, was ranked #1 nationwide.

What Teachers Should Teach Their Students, From a Student's Point of View

The lessons they teach in school include never ending lectures on parts of the sentence and writing poems, what they should have focused on, was how to EXPRESS yourself through poems with the use of correct sentence construction.

They have never ending math problems and terms I don't even remember, what I wanted to be taught was how to add to the happiness of others, subtract all the doubts from my life, divide and share my blessings and multiply my growth in character exponentially.

They taught so much about history but what I wish I had learned was how to LOVE my country, to remember the sacrifices that were made by our heroes regardless of whether I remember the dates.

I wish I had been taught how to play the piano and guitar, to feel the music and appreciate its beauty then learn the notes later. In physical education

I wish I had been taught more about proper and healthy diets, how to keep and stay healthy, how to treat injuries with the use of first aid treatments. In science

I wish I had been taught how science can make the world a better place, not the names of scientists who invented nitroglycerin and the atomic bomb.

I wish school grades were based more on how what we were learning made us better people rather than the things we won't always remember. Learning is supposed to be fun and no amount of facts and lessons in history can ever equal a lesson in becoming a better person, in humility and faith. You ask why so many smart people have bad attitudes?

You should have focused on teaching them better. How can you mold students to be better people if you bombard them with information that will be of little use or barely even remembered by them in the future?

In my opinion, the system of education should focus more on character and good moral values. Instead of focusing on high grades, why not focus on helping the students become better people? You cannot learn everything, but you can teach people to be kind to everyone.

The greatest lesson one can teach is love for their fellow people because that is the key to becoming better human beings.
