Kamaru Usman once again proved that he's at the top of the food chain in the welterweight division, before unloading some choice words for Jorge Masvidal.

The welterweight champion used the main event of UFC 258 on Saturday night as yet another proving point that he's one of the best mixed martial artists in the fight game — and perhaps even the best — as he pummeled Gilbert Burns toward a third-round TKO (punches) for his third straight title defense.

Usman overcame being dropped by a huge overhand right in the first round and began establishing his masterful jab in the second round. That same frame had Usman dropping Burns with a massive right of his own.

Seeing that he could hurt the game challenger, Usman didn't get overzealous. He stayed pumping his jab, using his weapon of choice to make Burns taste the canvas once again. Although he didn't get the finish he was seeking in the second, Usman ensured that he secured it in the third.

That's when Usman threw that stiff jab, once again dropping Burns. This time, though, the champ pounced on Burns with rights and lefts, leading ref Herb Dean to step in and end the bout. Since capturing the title against Tyron Woodley back in March 2019, Usman (13-0) has now defeated Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, and Burns.

"I am the best on the planet for a reason," Usman declared during his post-fight interview at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. "Y’all need to put some respect on my f—ing name! I am the welterweight champ for a reason, and I’m here to stay.”

Usman went on to warn Masvidal that a rematch with him will tender the same results — only more bluntly than the unanimous decision he claimed over "Gamebred" in July 2020.

"I will give you a whole training camp," Usman offered. "This time, I will finish your ass."

Usman acknowledged that the most challenging part about fighting Burns was that the two used to train together at American Top Team and that the champ left the gym when he knew that they would be entering the Octagon. Although Usman said he loves Burns, "The Nigerian Nightmare" said there can't be friends inside the confines of the Octagon.

"From start to finish, I'm a whole other savage, and he saw that tonight," Usman said. "When you step in here, there's no friends."

Kolkata: A 21-year-old activist was arrested in Bengaluru by the Delhi Police Cyber Crime Cell Sunday in connection with the ‘toolkit’ shared by teenaged Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on the ongoing farmer protests in India.

Disha Ravi, a BBA student from a private college in Bengaluru, is one of the founding members of Fridays For Future India (FFF), which is part of the global climate strike movement Thunberg started in August 2018.

The daughter of a Mysuru-based athletics trainer, she was working as a ‘culinary experience manager’ with a Bengaluru-based company, Good Mylk, and was arrested Saturday evening from her residence in Abbigere and taken to the capital to be produced in front of a magistrate.

According to senior Bengaluru Police officials, on 4 February, the Delhi Police Cyber Crime Cell registered an FIR against the creators of the ‘toolkit’, with the preliminary investigation claiming that the toolkit was devised by “pro-Khalistani” organisation Poetic Justice Foundation.

A senior police official told ThePrint that the operation involved tracking her social media handles, in which she was found violating the law by disseminating the ‘toolkit’. She has been booked on charges of sedition, criminal conspiracy and spreading hatred.

Another senior official elaborated that the sequence of events during the farmer protests, including the tractor rally on 26 January leading to violence in Delhi, was traced to be a “copycat” of the alleged action plan shared in the toolkit.

“We have not found any previous record of Disha being part of any physical protests. She was not on the police radar until this arrest. We assisted the Delhi Police in tracking her as is the formality,” said Bengaluru’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Division) Dharmendra Kumar Meena.

FIR on e-commerce company CLUB Factory for selling fake goods

On receiving no response from the club factory, the complainant contacted Titan and Ray-Ban's customer care.

Lucknow: An FIR has been registered against Chinese e-commerce company Club Factory, its directors Jialun Li, Garvit Agarwal and CFO Ashwini Rastogi for cheating under sections 420 and 406 of the IPC for selling counterfeit goods of famous brands. Alok Kakkar, a resident of Lucknow, has lodged this complaint with the Wazirabad police station. In the complaint, he has said that the club factory has given fake products to customers under a criminal conspiracy by advertising huge discounts on popular brands.

The complainant had purchased a Titan watch from the club factory, which had a discount of 86 percent, and had ordered two sunglasses from Ray-Ban, which had been given a discount of 90 percent. He received an order on 25 November, which upon opening revealed to him that both the products ordered were fake.

After this, he tried to contact the tollfree number provided by the company. However, he did not get any clear information on this. On the website of the club factory, the seller was named Mahakal Enterprise and Perfect Times. The complainant emailed the company for a copy of the invoice, but he was not given that copy of the invoice.

On receiving no response from the club factory, the complainant contacted Titan and Ray-Ban's customer care. After this they came to know that both the companies have no connection with the club factory nor do they sell their products through the club factory.

At the same time, Kakkar also said in his complaint that his representatives threatened him instead of resolving the problem when he spoke again at the toll free number of the club factory.

A complaint has also been filed against the company under Section 506 of IPC related to the criminal threat received by the complainant from the company. Cases against sections 420, 406, 506 and 120B of the IPC against the company CFO Ashwini Rastogi and the complaint officer of the club factory, fraud, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation against the two directors of the company, Jialun Lee and Garvit Aggarwal. SBI's single net profit down seven percent in third quarter

The country's largest bank SBI said on Thursday that its single net profit in the third quarter of the current financial year was down by seven per cent to Rs 5,196.22 crore.

New Delhi: The country's largest bank SBI on Thursday said that its single net profit in the third quarter of the current financial year decreased by seven percent to Rs 5,196.22 crore. State Bank of India (SBI) had a net profit of Rs 5,583.36 crore in the October-December period in the last financial year. The bank told the stock market that its total income during this period decreased to Rs 75,980.65 crore as compared to Rs 76,797.91 crore in the same period last year. The bank said that its net profit on an integrated basis declined by 5.8 per cent to Rs 6,402.16 crore in the third quarter from Rs 6,797.25 crore in the year-ago period.

However, the quality of the bank's assets (loans given) improved significantly during this period and the blocked loans (NPAs) came down to 4.77 per cent of the total advances as on 31 December 2020. NPA was 6.94 percent in the year-ago period. In terms of value, the gross NPA or blocked loans stood at Rs 1,17,244.23 crore. Similarly, net NPAs decreased by 1.23 percent or Rs 29,031.72 crore.

Apple was in discussions with at least six automakers, the Nikkei newspaper reported Friday, citing an unidentified executive at a supplier. South Korea’s Kia Motors Corp and Hyundai Motor Co, which controls 34% of the smaller carmaker, emerged since late last year as possible candidates to work with Apple, with local media reporting on talks over potential collaboration. On Friday, Dow Jones reported that Kia has approached partners about building cars in the US.

The big question is how serious Apple is about taking on Tesla Inc and other electric-vehicle makers and whether it has determined it will need an established manufacturer to be able to roll out its own product. The Cupertino, California-based company is said to have a small team of engineers developing drive systems, as well as designers, but with development work at an early stage, any roll out probably won’t happen for another five years.

Tatsuo Yoshida, a senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, said that Japanese automakers are usually too busy with their own development, manufacturing, sales and customer service to take on a task like working with Apple. The late wicket boosted India but the high-class partnership helped England recover from 63-2, having lost Rory Burns for 33 and Dan Lawrence for a duck on the stroke of lunch.
Root and Sibley weathered a good spell of bowling in the afternoon session and then wore the bowlers down with a masterclass of batting in subcontinental conditions.
Root, who hit 228 and 186 against Sri Lanka last month, became the ninth player to mark his 100th Test with a century.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan described the innings, which began in circumspect fashion and became increasingly aggressive, as "the perfect hundred".
"His 50 to 100 was magnificent," said Vaughan, speaking on The Cricket Social. "He went up in the gears, which is exactly what this team needed.
The late loss of Sibley, lbw to an inswinging yorker from Jasprit Bumrah, will take the gloss off England's day, but it was still a very impressive start to a much-anticipated series.
First, Root crucially won the toss and then, despite a wobble which included a rash stroke from Burns, he took advantage of a slow, flat pitch.
The hosts, through their three frontline bowlers - Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin - applied intense pressure after lunch but Root and Sibley came through and were then able to profit against India's less experienced bowlers.
India, the leaders in the World Test Championship standings, have only lost one match at home since 2013 and come into the four-match series buoyed by their historic win in Australia last month.
But it was England who had the better opening day, although many more runs are needed.
England scored 477 in their first innings on this ground during their last tour and lost by an innings, after India racked up 759-7 declared.
Root, who battled cramp late in the day, said his side had to aim for a score of "600 or 700".
"The foot holes are starting to wear quite quickly so if we can bat the whole of tomorrow and maybe into day three then things can speed up pretty quickly," he said.In Root, who was awarded a special cap to mark his landmark Test before play, England have a player in the form of his life.
After a lean 2020, during which he did not record a century, the Yorkshireman has begun 2021 - a year in which England play India home and away and visit Australia for the Ashes - in incredible touch.
In Sri Lanka he batted positively, almost from the outset, but in this innings he was more measured against a far superior bowling attack.
His first 25 runs took 72 balls before he reached his hundred from 164 as his attacking intent grew.
He swept with ease, albeit to a lesser extent than against Sri Lanka, and played a number of excellent shots through the off side off the front and back foot.
In Sibley he found a perfect foil - the England opener doggedly making an impressive score, with clips through mid-wicket his main scoring option.
Sibley had seen his opening partner Burns glove a catch when playing a reverse sweep, but provided no such gifts.
When the few mistakes did come in their dominant partnership, edges dropped short due to the slow nature of the pitch.
India were scrappy at times - they bowled 11 no-balls and there were fielding errors - and looked weary by the end but, as their recent series victory in Australia showed, they are never out of a contest.

The Canadian actor, known for roles in The Sound of Music and more recently Knives Out, has died, his family confirmed to Deadline Hollywood.

Christopher Plummer, the dazzlingly versatile Canadian actor whose screen career straddled seven decades, including such high-profile films as The Sound of Music, The Man Who Would Be King and All the Money in the World, the acclaimed Canadian actor perhaps best known for his role in "The Sound of Music," has died. He was 91.

Born Arthur Plummer in Toronto in 1929, the great-grandson of John Abbott, Canada’s third prime minister, and grew up in Quebec speaking English and French fluently. After leaving school he joined the Montreal Repertory Theatre, and after a short spell on Broadway achieved his first leading role as Hal in Henry V at the 1956 Stratford festival in Ontario. More stage roles followed, in both Stratford and on Broadway, including his first Tony nomination in 1959 for best actor in Archibald MacLeish’s JB, which was directed by Elia Kazan. He also secured roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK, playing Benedick in the 1961 production of Much Ado About Nothing (opposite Geraldine McEwan) and the title role of Richard III in the same year.

Plummer was born in Toronto, the only child of Isabella Mary and John Orme Plummer. His father was secretary to the dean of sciences at McGill University. His mother was the granddaughter of Canadian Prime Minister Sir John Abbott.

Shortly after his birth, Plummer's parents divorced and he was brought up in his mother's family home in Senneville, Quebec, outside Montreal. At Montreal High School, he took on his first dramatic role as Mr. Darcy in "Pride and Prejudice." His performance caught the attention of Herbert Whittaker, a theatre critic and stage director for the Montreal Repertory Theatre, who cast Plummer at age 18 as Oedipus in Cocteau's "The Infernal Machine."

The Sound of Music, released to huge success in 1965, proved Plummer’s breakthrough to stardom. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical about the real-life singing Von Trapp family, Plummer was originally reluctant to take on the role, and in 2018 told the Guardian he was “furious” when he found out his singing voice was going to be dubbed. “I’d worked on my singing for so long, but in those days, they’d have someone trained who would sing through dubbing. I said: ‘The only reason I did this bloody thing was so I could do a musical on stage on film!’”

After The Sound of Music, Plummer was in demand as a character actor in high-profile films, appearing in a wide variety of material, from The Royal Hunt of the Sun and The Battle of Britain in 1969, to Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic Waterloo (1970) and Return of the Pink Panther (1975). He played Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King and Sherlock Holmes in Murder By Decree (1979). He also had success on stage, winning a Tony award in 1973 for the title role in the musical Cyrano.

Though he continued to work steadily in the 1980s and 90s, the quality of his screen roles began to tail off. High points included roles in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) as Klingon general Chang, and Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992) as a racist prison chaplain; he also played virologist Leland Goines in 12 Monkeys (1995) and TV journalist Mike Wallace in The Insider (1999). His stage work, as before, appeared to sustain him, with another Tony award in 1997 for the title role in Barrymore, about the Shakespearean actor John Barrymore, and a King Lear in 2002, directed by Jonathan Miller, which led to another Tony nomination after its transfer to Broadway in 2004.

His well-known distaste for the film mellowed over time: “I’ve made my peace with it,” he added. “It annoyed the hell out of me at first. I thought: ‘Don’t these people ever see another movie? Is this the only one they’ve ever seen?’ … But I’m grateful to the film, and to Robert Wise, who’s a great director and a gentleman, and to Julie [Andrews], who’s remained a terrific friend.”

That led to an apprenticeship with the Canadian Repertory Company, followed by roles in New York and London. Even after becoming a successful movie actor, Plummer continued performing on stage.

Plummer was married three times. His first, to Tony Award-winning actress Tammy Grimes, produced a daughter, the actress Amanda Plummer. He is survived by his daughter and his third wife, Taylor, a British dancer and actress.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots," Pitt said. "Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come."

Plummer, who began his career on stage, made his film debut in 1958's "Stage Struck" and went on to a successful movie career that spanned more than six decades. He starred in a vast variety of films, including "The Return of the Pink Panther," "Murder by Decree," "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," "A Beautiful Mind," "Up," "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," "All the Money in the World," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Knives Out."

Plummer, it seemed, could handle any role from Oedipus to Othello. Audiences of varying ages might recognize him as the antagonist old man in "Up" to, more recently, the wealthy patriarch in the comedic mystery movie "Knives Out."

Accepting the award, he famously quipped, "You're only two years older than me, darling. Where have you been all my life?"

In addition to his Oscar, Plummer won two Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, a Golden Globe Award, a SAG Award and a BAFTA Award.

But it was his role as Captain Georg von Trapp opposite Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music" that catapulted him to fame.

While the film — about a strict single father of seven who falls in love with a nun-in-training before the entire musically talented family has to flee Austria to avoid his serving in the Nazi Navy — is hailed as a classic, he long regarded the role as "humorless and one-dimensional.”

But Plummer remained best known to film audiences as the patriarch of the singing von Trapp family, starring alongside Julie Andrews in the 1965 hit musical "The Sound of Music."

"I'm still remembered for it, much to my chagrin -- only because I've done so much more serious and interesting work. But at least it got me some of the best tables in restaurants all over the world," he told McGill University graduates in 2006.

“We tried so hard to put humor into it,” Plummer told The Associated Press in 2007. “It was almost impossible. It was just agony to try to make that guy not a cardboard figure.”

Plummer had a remarkable film renaissance late in life, which began with his acclaimed performance as Mike Wallace in Michael Mann’s 1999 film “The Insider" and continued in films such 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind” and 2009′s “The Last Station,” in which he played a deteriorating Leo Tolstoy and was nominated for an Oscar, and 2011's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

“Too many people in the world are unhappy with their lot. And then they retire and they become vegetables. I think retirement in any profession is death, so I’m determined to keep crackin’,” he told AP in 2011.

Plummer was nominated for a third best supporting actor Oscar in 2017, when he replaced Kevin Spacey as J. Paul Getty in “All the Money in the World,” only six weeks before the film was to be released.

His work also earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Plummer began his career on stage and in radio in Canada in the 1940s and made his Broadway debut in 1954 in “The Starcross Story.”

While still a relative unknown, he was cast as Hamlet in a 1963 performance co-starring Robert Shaw and Michael Caine. It was taped by the BBC at Elsinore Castle in Denmark, where the play is set, and released in 1964. It won an Emmy.

He won a best supporting actor Oscar in 2012, making him the oldest Academy Award acting winner in history at the age of 82, for his role in “Beginners” as Hal Fields, a museum director who becomes openly gay after his wife of 44 years dies.

Plummer married Tony-winning actress Tammy Grimes in 1956, with whom he had his only child, actress Amanda Plummer, in 1957. Amanda Plummer also won a Tony, in 1982, for “Agnes of God. Plummer and Grimes divorced in 1960.

A five-year marriage to Patricia Lewis ended in 1967. Plummer married his third wife, dancer Taylor, in 1970.

He was given Canada’s highest civilian honor when he was invested as Companion of the Order of Canada by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968, and was inducted into the American Theatre’s Hall of Fame in 1986.

Tributes to Plummer began filling social media Friday afternoon.

"'Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever.' RIP Christopher Plummer. You lit up screen and stage over a lifetime of art. My thoughts are with your family and friends," journalist Dan Rather wrote on Twitter, quoting "The Sound of Music."

"Rest in eternal music, Captain Von Trapp," wrote George Takei.

"I was lucky enough to direct Christopher Plummer in my first film. He was the absolute BEST," wrote screenwriter Dan Fogelman. "He was an extraordinary talent, and an extraordinarily kind man ... and those two things rarely come in the same package."

Plummer’s first film appearance was in 1958’s Stage Struck, a backstage drama in which he plays a writer in love with Susan Strasberg’s ingenue. His biggest hit, and arguably best-known role, was as singing anti-Nazi Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 1965. More recently, in 2017, he stepped in at short notice to replace Kevin Spacey in the Ridley Scott-directed All the Money in the World, after Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct.

Supreme Court grants interim bail to comic Munawar Faruqui

The comic was accused of allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments and was arrested on January 1. On Friday, the apex court acknowledged Faruqui's argument that the allegations against him are vague, according to The Hindu.

The Supreme Court Friday granted interim bail to stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui and also stayed the production warrant issued in connection with a case registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police against him last year.

The court was hearing Faruqui’s appeal of a Madhya Pradesh high court order denying him bail. The comedian has been charged with hurting religious sentiments based on the complaint of the son of a BJP MLA, but was arrested even before the allegedly offensive show took place. The BJP leader’s son has claimed that he overheard Faruqui rehearsing for the show but could not submit proof of this.

"The learned counsel has pointed out to us that quite apart from the fact that the allegations made in the FIR are vague that the procedure contained in Section 41 Cr.P.C. as adumbrated by our judgment in Arnesh Kumar Vs. State of Bihar & Anr., reported in (2014) 8 SCC 273 has not been followed before arresting the petitioner. This being the case, we issue notice in both the petitions, and stay the Judgment of the High Court. The petitioner is released on ad-interim bail on conditions to the satisfaction of the trial court. In the meantime, there shall be stay of the production warrants as well," the order said.

Faruqui’s lawyer, Saurabh Kirpal, told the Supreme Court that the court’s directions in Arunesh Kumar – which put in place guidelines and restrictions for the police while making arrests – were not followed while arresting the comedian. “Judgment of 2014 not followed in this case and that has been pointed out to us as per Section 41 CrPC. We issue notice [to the Madhya Pradesh government] on the interim bail plea,” Justice Nariman said, according to Bar and Bench.

Faruqui was arrested on January 1 by the Madhya Pradesh Police on allegations that he made derogatory remarks against Hindu Gods during a recent stand-up show. A complaint to this effect was reportedly filed by Eklavya Singh Gaur, chief of Hindutva organisation Hind Rakshak Sangathan.

The bench led by Justice R.F. Nariman issued notice to the Madhya Pradesh government on Faruqui’s petition, challenging the MP High Court’s earlier order that dismissed his request for bail.

The stand-up comedian has been in judicial custody since January 1, when he was arrested along with four others for allegedly passing “indecent remarks” about Hindu deities and Union home minister Amit Shah during a New Year show at a cafe in Indore. His arrest, police say, was based on “oral evidence” given by the son of a BJP MLA, who claimed to have “overheard” Faruqui rehearsing jokes that he was “going to” say in his act.

Faruqui's bail plea was earlier rejected by a Sessions Court and thereafter the Madhya Pradesh High Court on January 28.

Faruiqui's counsel has asserted in the High Court that there was no video or material to show that Faruqui has made any comment to hurt Hindu deities during his show as alleged. An objection was also raised to the Uttar Pradesh Police seeking Faruqui's custody in relation to comments allegedly made during another show in May 2020.

The Madhya Pradesh high court had on January 28 rejected Faruqui’s bail plea and said that it was the constitutional duty of every citizen “to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood”.

The single-judge bench of Justice Rohit Arya that gave the judgement after reserving its order on Monday, held that “no case is made out for grant of bail”. It also said that there was prima facie evidence to suggest that the applicants intended to outrage religious feelings “under the garb of standup comedy.”

The State must endeavour to ensure that this "ecosystem and sustenance of coexistence in our welfare society is not polluted by negative forces," the High Court had added.

Justice Rohit Arya of Madhya Pradesh High Court had said in his order denying bail that, "regard being had to the material seized and the statements of the witnesses and that the investigation is in progress, no case is made out for grant of bail."

It stated that there is a Constitutional duty on every citizen and the State to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood irrespective of religious, linguistic, sectional and regional diversities (under Article 51A(e) and (f) of the Constitution).

Faruqui has been lodged in jail for over a month now in Indore, and his bail petition was denied thrice by a sessions court and the High Court.

On 28 January, a single-judge HC bench of Justice Rohit Arya had said Faruqui and co-accused Nalin Yadav’s complacency could not be ruled out in light of the statements made by the complainant and witnesses as well as the articles seized by the police and video footage of the show.

It was not a case of “no evidence”, the judge had held.

Faruqui and four other artistes were arrested on 1 January under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings of any class), for allegedly cracking jokes about Hindu gods and goddesses, and also Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a show at a café in Indore.

The case was registered on a complaint filed by Aklavya Singh Gaud, convenor of local Hindu outfit Hind Rakshak, alleging that Faruqui and others had hurt “religious feelings of Hindus” through their “outrageously filthy jokes cracked deliberately against Hindu gods and goddess”.

Faruqui also moved SC with a separate writ petition to quash the FIR registered against him by the Madhya Pradesh Police. The top court has also issued notice on the same.

Bail granted because MP Police did not follow 2014 SC judgment

During Faruqui’s bail hearing Friday, his lawyer Saurabh Kirpal told Justice Nariman that the case against the comedian was an instance of victimisation.

The bench then asked Kirpal if SC’s 2014 judgment on arrests was followed by the Madhya Pradesh Police when Faruqui was detained, which the lawyer replied was not followed.

“Judgement of 2014 is not followed in this case and that has been pointed out to us. We issue notice on the interim bail plea. Production warrant by UP stayed,” the court then ordered.

In the case of Arnesh Kumar Vs State of Bihar in 2014, the top court had laid down a procedure to be followed to arrest persons in matters where an offence is punishable with a jail term of up to seven years.

Reiterating the provisions under Section 41A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPc), the SC had ruled that every police officer shall forward a check list of the arrest duly filled and furnish the reasons and materials which necessitated the arrest, while forwarding or producing the accused before the magistrate.

According to the judgment, notice of appearance has to be extended by the superintendent of police concerned to the accused within two weeks of filing the case, under Section 41A of CrPC.

“Arrest brings humiliation, curtails freedom and casts scars forever,” the top court had said, adding that the police must ensure they do not arrest an accused unnecessarily and the magistrate does not authorise detention casually and mechanically.

Victim of ‘gross persecution’

In his appeal against the HC order, Faruqui had said he was a victim of “gross persecution” and was “illegally abducted” without “any incriminating evidence”.

He alleged that he was forcefully taken to Tukoganj police station in Indore and was arrested on the spot without any prior investigation.

The impugned HC order “spells a death knell to the fundamental concomitant of bail jurisprudence which rests upon the principle that grant of bail is a rule whereas its rejection it’s only by way of an exception”, Faruqui submitted to the SC.

The High Court had concluded that there is prima facie evidence to suggest that the applicants (Faruqui and the show organiser, Yadav) had intended to outrage religious feelings "under the garb of standup comedy."

He added that the order highlighted the HC’s “prejudice”, which rejected his bail plea on the grounds of complacency and videos that were published earlier on social media platforms and “were never part of the transaction on the basis of which the instant FIR was registered”.

The HC order, the appeal maintained, is contrary to settled tenets of law and provisions of Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code.

His petition noted that the HC incorrectly relied upon earlier videos of Faruqui that were uploaded on YouTube, which had no relation or bearing to the present case.

According to him, the HC completely ignored the words spoken by Faruqui at the show.

He added that they were never meant to insult or meant to outrage the religious feelings of a particular class of people “but merely a satire for the purpose of entertainment”.

“The entire comic was never meant to be taken literally,” he stated in his petition, noting that the HC erred in basing its order on content that was never part of the FIR or ever alleged by the complainant.

The alleged complacency and selected bits and pieces of videos, which are circulating in the public domain, could not have been made the basis for deciding the question of petitioner’s liberty, Faruqui stated in his petition.

The appeal also cited the Arnesh Kumar judgment and highlighted that the police transgressed its jurisdiction by arresting him without complying with mandatory procedural requirements.

Besides Faruqui, four other persons – Nalin Yadav, Prakhar Vyas, Edwin Anthony and Priyam Vyas – associated with organising the show were booked under IPC section 295A (outraging religious feelings) and other counts. One day later, Faruqui’s friend Sadaqat Khan was also arrested for allegedly making abusive remarks about Gaur. Khan’s bail plea was also rejected by a sessions court in Indore for “being involved in hurting Hindu religious sentiments by passing objectional remarks against Hindu god-goddess and showing objectionable articles to women and children”.

MAyanmar limits internet usage as protests against trilitary coup grow

Authorities cut internet lines in the country as thousands of people joined mass demonstrations on Saturday against an ongoing coup declared by Myanmar’s army. Protesters, often raising three fingers and wearing red ribbons, also expressed solidarity from India and Thailand on Friday. The civil disobedience campaign started on Monday, shortly after the army announced on military-run television that it had taken control and declared a year-long state of emergency. Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and several other political figures have been arrested.

Myanmar police arrested 30 people for banging pots to protest the military coup. The military blocked Facebook to stop protest organizers, so people joined Twitter instead. Many are using a 3-finger salute also seen at protests in Thailand: "We have to resist this dictatorship."

Myanmar saw its largest anti-coup protests yet on Saturday (Feb 6) with young demonstrators spilling on to the streets to denounce the country's new military regime, despite a nationwide Internet blackout aimed at stifling a growing chorus of popular dissent.

How the internet dropped off

The restrictions to the internet were reported on Monday at 03:00 local time (20:30 GMT on Sunday).

Internet connectivity had dropped to 50% of normal levels by 08:00 local time that day, as people were waking up to the news of the military takeover.

"Army cut off the state media TV and radios, local phone line and internet getting disabled across the country," tweeted Burmese Reuters journalist Wa Lone.

Around 3,000 demonstrators gathered on a road near Yangon University, most holding up the three-finger salute that has come to symbolise resistance to the army takeover.

Data from the internet monitoring service Netblocks shows disruptions on network operators, including state-owned Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) and an international operator, Telenor.

Netblocks says its findings indicate a "centrally ordered mechanism of disruption... progressing over time as operators comply".

By midday on Monday, internet connectivity had returned to 75% of normal activity.

However, on Wednesday the military blocked access to Facebook, which has been used by activists to co-ordinate opposition to the coup.

In the first such demonstration since the generals seized power on Monday, activists chanted: "Military dictator, fail, fail; democracy, win, win," and held banners reading "Against military dictatorship". Bystanders offered them food and water.

For the overwhelming majority in Myanmar, Facebook is the primary means of access to the internet.

Some users are managing to circumvent the ban by using VPNs, which encrypt an internet connection so its location is not identifiable.

What is a VPN service?.

Users in the country are rushing to download VPN apps to allow them to do this.

There has been a 4,300% increase in the demand for VPN, according to Top10VPN.com, which conducts research on these services.

The authorities have said blocks on Facebook will remain in place until 7 February.

Many in the crowd wore red, the colour of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) which won Nov 8 elections in a landslide, a result the generals have refused to recognise, claiming fraud.

As the protest swelled and activists issued calls on social media for people to join the march, the country's Internet crashed.

Regional variations

Some parts of Myanmar, also known as Burma, were more restricted than others.

Based at Monash University in Australia, the IP Observatory, which tracks internet connectivity around the world, found that some regions were severely disrupted.

Magway region was reporting zero internet connectivity at one point.

Yangon region, which includes the country's largest city, dropped in connectivity to about 50% compared to normal times. Restricting internet in the major cities is likely to be more difficult, as users will have access to a wider variety of providers that may implement restrictions at different intensities and at different times.

Most regions are now reporting an increase in internet connectivity.

Monitoring group NetBlocks Internet Observatory reported a "national-scale Internet blackout", saying on Twitter that connectivity had fallen to 54 per cent of ordinary levels. Witnesses reported a shutdown of mobile data services and Wi-Fi.

The junta did not respond to requests for comment. It has tried to silence dissent by temporarily blocking Facebook and extended a social media crackdown to Twitter and Instagram on Saturday.

Norwegian mobile phone company Telenor Asa said authorities had ordered Internet providers to deny access to Twitter and Instagram "until further notice".

Many had sidestepped the ban on sites such as Facebook by using virtual private networks to conceal their locations, but the more general disruption to mobile data services would severely limit access to independent news and information.

"Internet already down but we will not stop raising our voice," wrote a Twitter user with the handle Maw Htun Aung. "Let’s fight peacefully for democracy and freedom. Let’s fight until the last minute for our future."

Myanmar civil society organisations appealed to Internet providers and mobile networks to challenge the junta's orders blocking Internet access.

A history of disruption in Myanmar

The Myanmar government has restricted the internet before, especially in areas in Rakhine and Chin states, where the army is fighting local groups. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the conflicts.

Article 77 of Myanmar's Telecommunications Law, passed in 2013, is used by the government to cut off telecommunications during a national emergency.

However, human rights groups have called for the law to be amended to protect freedom of expression and have criticised the broad scope of the law.

There were also concerns that health information about Covid-19 was being restricted to some parts of the country, because of an internet shutdown in 2020.

How do governments do it?

A government can disrupt the internet by ordering internet service providers (ISPs) to limit access.

This can include blocking particular sites, such as popular social media platforms. A message such as "server not found" or "this site has been blocked by the network administrator" will show up.

Another method is known as "throttling" - when the bandwidth to a website is limited, making the internet slow and frustrating to use.

Finally, telecoms providers can shut down all access to the internet.

In theory, a telecoms company could challenge a government order. But in countries where the government has a tight grip on the media and can threaten to revoke licences, the willingness to push back on such demands is limited.

"By complying with their directives, your companies are essentially legitimising the military’s authority, despite international condemnation of this very body," a coalition of groups said in a statement.

Telenor said before the Internet shutdown that it was legally obliged to follow the order to block some social media, but "highlighted the directive’s contradiction with international human rights law."

Amnesty International’s deputy regional director for campaigns, Ming Yu Hah, said shutting down the Internet amid a coup and the COVID-19 pandemic was a "heinous and reckless decision".

Army chief Min Aung Hlaing seized power alleging fraud although the electoral commission says it has found no evidence of widespread irregularities in the November vote.

The junta announced a one-year state of emergency and has promised to hand over power after new elections, without giving a time frame.

INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE

The takeover drew international condemnation, with a United Nations Security Council call for the release of all detainees and targeted sanctions under consideration by Washington.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 75, has not been seen in public since the coup. She spent some 15 years under house arrest during a struggle against previous juntas before the troubled democratic transition began in 2011.

The lawyer for Aung San Suu Kyi and ousted President Win Myint said they were being held in their homes and that he was unable to meet them because they were still being questioned.

Aung San Suu Kyi faces charges of importing six walkie-talkies illegally while Win Myint is accused of flouting COVID-19 restrictions.

Sean Turnell, an Australian economic adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi, said in message to Reuters on Saturday that he was being detained.

Saturday's protest is the first sign of street unrest in a country with a history of bloody military crackdowns on protesters. There were also anti-coup protests in Melbourne, Australia, and the Taiwanese capital Taipei on Saturday.

A civil disobedience movement has been building in Myanmar all week, with doctors and teachers among those refusing to work, and every night people bang pots and pans in a show of anger.

In addition to about 150 arrests in the wake of the coup reported by human rights groups, local media said around 30 people have been detained over the noise protests.

The United States is considering targeted sanctions on individuals and on entities controlled by Myanmar's military.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressed top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi in a phone call on Friday to condemn the coup, the State Department said.

China, which has close links to Myanmar's military, joined the consensus on the Security Council statement, but has not condemned the army takeover and has said countries should act in the interests of the stability of its neighbour Myanmar.

UN Myanmar envoy Christine Schraner Burgener condemned the coup in a call with Myanmar's deputy military chief Soe Win, and called for the immediate release of all those detained, a UN spokesman said.

The generals have few overseas interests that would be vulnerable to international sanctions, but the military's extensive business investments could suffer if foreign partners leave - as Japanese drinks company Kirin Holdings said it would on Friday.

US-based pressure group Human Rights Watch called for the lifting of the Internet restrictions, the release of detainees and an end to threats against journalists.

"A news and information blackout by the coup leaders can’t hide their politically motivated arrests and other abuses," said Asia director Brad Adams.

Sensex has a bumper week: Surges nearly 4,500 points in just 5 days

Indian stock markets extended gains to the fifty day today with benchmark index Sensex rising 117 points today after the Reserve Bank kept interest rates unchanged but continued its accommodative stance to revive growth. The 30-share BSE benchmark briefly crossed the 51,000 level, before ending 117 points higher at its fresh closing record of 50,731.63. Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty scaled the 15,000 mark during the day but shed some ground to close at its all-time closing high of 14,924, up 0.2%.

n just five days, the Sensex has risen about 4,500 points or about 10%, its best since the week ending April 10, largely on optimism from measures announced in the Budget on Monday.

1) "The Nfity-50 & BSE Sensex Index gained more than 9% this week with Sensex breaking the 50,000 market and Nifty-50 close to the 15,000 mark. Market mood has been quite exuberant in the aftermath of the Union Budget along with stronger-than-expected earnings," said Rusmik Oza, Executive Vice President, Head of Fundamental Research at Kotak Securities.

2) "A combination of positive sentiment, positive FII flows and very healthy earnings could keep markets at elevated levels in the near future," he said.

3) SBI was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying over 10%, followed by Kotak Bank, Dr Reddy’s, UltraTech Cement, ITC and HDFC Bank.

4) On the other hand, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Maruti and HCL Tech were among the laggards.

4) Banking index, especially PSU banks, witnessed sharp rally, followed by pharma and FMCG indices.

5) Earlier in the day, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept interest rates on hold while assuring to maintain support for reflating the economy by ensuring ample liquidity to manage the government's near-record borrowing.

6) "RBI too did its fair share by complementing government visionary agenda for augmenting growth by keeping the repo rate unchanged while continuing with its accommodative stance. In order to facilitate massive government borrowing, one of the major announcements by RBI was to allow retail investors to directly invest in G-Secs online. This move suggests that the RBI will now directly compete with banks to attract retail savings deposits. Markets were cheerful as the inflation is estimated to be well under the tolerance band by the next quarter and the liquidity easing to the structurally weak sectors is taken care off especially for the NBFCs," said Nirali Shah, Head of Equity Research, Samco Securities.

7) "This combined effort on reforms by the Government and RBI suggest the fostering of confidence and growth among the markets and economy which will aid in the bull rally in the long term," she added.

8) Manish Hathiramani, Proprietary Index Trader and Technical Analyst, Deen Dayal Investments, said, "The markets have closed well in the green with supporting volumes. 15,000 has proved to be a psychological resistance but that should not deter the thought process on the trend. We continue to remain bullish and the Nifty has the wings to achieve 15200."

9) "A buy on dips strategy would be advisable. There is ample scope for the markets to correct during intraday sessions. These dips can be utilised to make fresh long positions for higher targets. This way the risk-reward trade-off would be favourable," he added.

10) "As the major events are behind us i.e. the Union budget and monetary policy meet, the focus will shift back to fundamentals as well as global cues. We might see some consolidation in the index early next week," said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking.

Apple’s Patent Application Indicates That It Could Have a Solution for Fraying Lightning Cables

Apple has filed a patent application that could stop its lightning cables from fraying so easily. The patent is for a cable with variable stiffness that could solve this problem. Apple's lightning cables have a reputation for fraying easily but the company could have found a solution, going by this patent. The Cupertino-company proposed ideas for a cable that won't fray easily. In the patent application, it talks about a cable with ‘variable stiffness' and admits that it is well-known that bending of the cable near the termination point where it goes into the phone could cause unwanted strain on wire connections, which could lead to cable failure.

The patent application dated February 4, 2021, was filed by Apple on August 3, 2019. It was first spotted by Apple Insider.

In the patent application, Apple proposes developing a strain relief sleeve made of a stiff material around the end region of the cable. This stiff material, it says, will create a localised increase in the bending resistance of the cable, which in turn will relieve strain on the wire connections. Apple also proposes extra thickening of cables overall. The patent application includes a design as well.

The patent signals that Apple is working towards fixing a long-criticised problem with its charging cables. However, this is just a concept right now and may or may not go into production. It is also worth noting that the patent does not specifically mention ‘Lightning Cables' anywhere, so this could be a broader design for Apple products.

“A cable can include a cable core surrounded by an outer sleeve having a uniform thickness and further having a first longitudinal section having a first stiffness (e.g., corresponding to a flexible cable), a second longitudinal section having a second stiffness (e.g., corresponding to a rigid cable), and a third longitudinal section between the first and second longitudinal sections, where the second stiffness is greater than the first stiffness and where a stiffness of the third longitudinal section varies between the first stiffness and the second stiffness. The second longitudinal section can provide strain relief for the cable,” explained Apple in the patent application.
