Chocolate Pie

My sweet Madison loves to bake! And we love to taste the things she bakes. It's a match made in heaven, really.

Every few days, I'll find her in the kitchen whipping up something delicious.

She recently made one of The Pioneer Woman's chocolate pies. She started with a homemade pie crust and filled it up with the decadent chocolate filling!

The topped it with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

I wish you could taste how good this was! Yum yum, smack, slurp!

What I'm Wearing to Blissdom

I couldn't be more giddy about being able to attend my very first blogging conference. This will be my first time away from the family in THREE KIDS! Well, excluding those times I had my legs in the air with various strangers yelling, "PUUUUUUSH!" which isn't all that relaxing contrary to what you might think.

(And by the way, did you hear that I get to meet Harry Connick, Jr? That's right! He will be at Blissdom, too, giving a li'l concert for the attendees AND having a meet and greet afterwards!)

So, when Mom's Travel Tales announced that she would be posting a link up for Blissdom attendees to share what they would be wearing, I was ALL OVER IT!

I coerced my sweet daughter/videographer to record me in a ~~rambling~~ fascinating monologue exhibiting my fashion choices.

So, buckle up, friends. You won't see anything this riveting again until... I do another video on nothing really important, which could be as early as next week.

Not Me!

The cable guy who showed up an hour early last week did NOT find me barely out of my pajamas still sweeping up broken glass in the kitchen from an earlier mishap with children running around still in their pajamas and the baby with a snotty nose and a saggy diaper.

And if he had seen me in that state, I certainly would NOT have been wearing pink fuzzy slippers!

Nope! Not me! Because I am woman! I am invincible! I am always on the ball and never taken by surprise.

I certainly would never forget about a scheduled out of town trip my husband told me about weeks ago and plan my daughter's birthday party during that time! Especially if we only have friend parties on 5th, 10th, and 15th birthdays, because that would be a big deal, and what kind of parent would plan a big deal party when the dad is out of town?

Not me! That's who!

I also would never make a 4 year old child wear wet shoes to church to drive home a point about not leaving shoes outside overnight during a rainstorm. Why, that would just be downright mean, and do you know who is downright mean?

Not me!

And I would never interrupt myself in a video post on How to Make Homemade Country Gravy THREE TIMES to tell a child she absolutely could not wear that outfit to church.

Nope. Not me! That would be unprofessional and distracting.

Favorite Toys

Here are a couple of my favorite toys from this year's Christmas extravaganza.

This tracing toy is very helpful to my newly turned 4 year old. When a letter is pressed, the screen lights up with dots for the child to trace to make the letter and a voice prompts the child to begin tracing, repeating what the letter is. The dots then disappear and the child can see the letter she made all by herself. Very nifty!

These crayons were a gift to the same child as above, but all the kids are loving them. They mark easily on windows and wipe right off with a damp cloth.

Or in the case of an imaginative 2 year old, you can give yourself a facial.

Smockity Cooks: Homemade Country Gravy

Have you ever made homemade country gravy? I used to be intimidated to make it. I tried a couple of times, but it always turned out lumpy and tasteless.

Then I resorted to buying those packets of gravy mix, but I always wanted to learn how to make it for myself. I did a little research and, after many trials and errors, finally perfected my method!

Homemade Lotion Bar Tutorial

I have posted before about making homemade lotion bars, and I would like to give you detailed steps so you can make them yourself.

I recently posted a question on some Blog Frog Forums asking what to do about extremely dry skin.

This winter weather and the dryness of the heater constantly running is doing very ugly things to my skin! It is itchy, scaly, and extreeeeemely dry.

I got a few responses, mostly about different lotions I have already tried. That's when I remembered that I had a few of these lotion bars leftover from giving them as Christmas gifts to Bible class and piano teachers.

I knew they felt good on my hands, but on a whim I rubbed one directly onto my legs, and aaaahhhhhhhh! Relief!

The shea butter, avacado oil, vitamin E oil, and beeswax make it luxuriously rich, thick and soothing!

These are super simple to make. The kids even got involved and enjoyed making them for their teachers.

Homemade Lotion Bar Recipe
(I ordered the supplies I needed from Bramble Berry.)

1 part shea butter
1 part avocado oil
1 part beeswax
vitamin E oil

Use a double boiler (one small pot floating in a bigger pot of water) to slowly melt the shea butter and beeswax.
Stir in the avocado oil and vitamin E. I used about a teaspoon of vitamin E for every cup of the other ingredients.
Pour into some pretty molds.
At this step, I added a few drops of vanilla extract to some for a delicious scent. I really like the ones that didn't have it, too, though. They smell of honey because of the beeswax!
Allow to cool.
Pop out carefully and enjoy!

I ordered this lovely mold from a soap making site on Ebay.

Here is a lotion bar I have been using, so it is a bit worn down.

Is it just me, or does it look like my grandmother's hand has taken over my arm? Ah, well. No matter. Just look at how moisturized I am!

The Bible in 90 Days Check Up

How are you doing on the Bible reading challenge?

We are on day 11 now, and I'm finding that the reading is easier than I thought it would be. I try to get up a little early to complete it and if I don't get all the way through before something else needs doing, I take my Bible with me wherever I go and read what I can until I'm all caught up.

Leavin' on a Jet Plane

I just bought my first plane ticket since the 1900's.

Seriously, I haven't flown since 1998. I hear a few things have changed since then, so I guess I'll be wearing my good socks. And underwear. Just in case I have to show proof that I'm harmless.

I bet you'll never guess where I'm going, either.

That's right! A gen-yoo-wine blogging conference!

I hope I learn all kinds of pertinent stuff like:

Is it offensive to a readership to use the Southern Plural Possessive "all y'all's"?
Is it appropriate to call 10-15 people a "readership"?
Will posting a picture of a baby in a bag be cause for alarm to Child Protective Services?
Are readers interested in diaper changing videos wherein a bad rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'" is the highlight?

The part I am most looking forward to, though, is meeting a whole big bunch of ladies I have been ~~stalking~~ reading about for years!

I can't wait to meet Lora Lynn of Vita Familiae! The first thing I'm going to do is show off my fancy Latin pronunciation of her blog name and see if I've been getting it right (in my head, where I say it) all this time. If not, I'll just keep saying it that way anyway. Who would know? IT'S ALL IN MY HEAD!

I'm also dying to meet Toni, The Happy Housewife. I won't tell her that I'm thinking of stealing a couple of her kids' names for our new baby, though. ~wicked laugh~

Crystal Paine, Money Saving Mom, (formerly Biblical Womanhood) will be there, too! I'll probably have to stand in line to meet her, but I can't wait!

And I'll be looking for Kimberly of Raising Olives. She's pregnant, too, so maybe I'll get a cute photo of the two of us together. But only if she doesn't make me look too fat.

I'm rooming with Monica from Daily Dwelling (She said I could borrow her curly hair products. Remember, Monica?) and Liz from Hoosier Homemade. Word has it that Liz is going to be bringing her famous cupcakes. They will be in our room the whole time! STAND BACK! Pregnant lady at the buffet!

Date Night With Mom

Li'l Smockity #4 recently had her chance at date night with Mom.

She chose a Chinese buffet.

Notice her dining choices. Vanilla pudding. Chocolate pudding. Vanilla/chocolate pudding swirl. And an ice cream cone. We're all about making healthy choices here in Smockityville.

After dinner, we went to a "paint your own pottery" shop where she picked out a piggy bank to paint.

An artist takes her work very seriously.

A few days later, the pottery store called to tell us the piggy bank was ready for pick up.

We had a fabulous time and she loves having her piggy to remind her of our special night.

Smockity Talks

It's time to answer more questions from my readers. I still have quite a few questions left, so I will continue this series and call it "Smockity Talks" from here on out.

The first two questions today come from my real life friend, Jerri. (Hi, Jerri!)
With all of your children how do you find the opportunity to have some togetherness time with your hubby?

We now have a built in babysitter because our oldest is almost 15, so we can and do occasionally go out for some time together. There was a period of time, though, when we either had to hire a babysitter or make do with family time. Even though I enjoy alone time with my husband I believe it is possible to have a loving, close relationship with him while going months, or even years, at a time without "dates".

When we had only young children and couldn't afford a babysitter, we took our alone time where and when we could get it. We have let the kids watch a dvd while we talked at the kitchen table, or waited until their bedtime (which has always been 8:30) so we could enjoy a movie alone together. We definitely had to be creative!

Also, How do you complete your knitting projects with kids around?

I keep my knitting, smocking, or other handwork in a bag that stays in the van. Whenever I find myself waiting at a doctor appointment or a homeschool gym day, I pull it out and work on it a little bit at a time.

What's the biggest change to your body after almost 8 kids?

I'm not sure if the changes in my body are due to having seven children so much as they are because of being 43, but there is some, shall we say "sagging", which from what I see on magazines headlines in the grocery store checkout line is rather common. I will say that I am often told I look much younger than 43. I am in good health and always manage to lose my pregnancy weight, although it usually takes a full year to slim back down to my normal size.

How often do you forget/mix up your kids' names?

It depends. I hardly ever call my son by any other name than his. With the six girls? All bets are off. And for a few months after I've had a new baby, whenever someone asks me the baby's name, I may have to pause and mentally count to seven.

When/Why did you start blogging? I tell the entire riveting story in "How It All Began".

I have a question from one big family to another: toothbrushes. The bane of my existence. IF I can actually get 7 different toothbrushes so that they don't get mixed up... someone is always missing one or forgetting or dropping it on the bathroom floor and then it's stepped on...
Seriously, I've resorted to buying a bushel of extras at the dollar store.

How do you keep your toothbrushes in line (not talking about storage - the USAGE is where it falls apart, LOL!)

This is the part where I get all cranky and tell y'all the only thing I hate worse than toothbrushes is SOCKS! I won't go off on socks today, though. I will keep my angst confined to toothbrushes for this post.

I really don't have any good answer for this one because we deal with the exact same things you mentioned in your question! I tell at least one child per week, "Just go use mine!"

If anyone has a solution for this one, please jump in!

Thumb Sucking: Breaking the Habit

You know how I told you last week was the "Backwards Edition of Works For Me Wednesday"? Only, in another case of my Half-Heimers acting up again, that was completely wrong? Well, this week is the REAL LIVE "Backwards Edition" where bloggers are asking questions and hoping readers will have answers.

No foolin' this time! So here's where I need your advice:

We just took six of the children in for dental check ups and were told that two of them were going to need dental appliances because their bites were malformed due to thumb or finger sucking! I need all your best tips, friends!

We have three thumb or finger suckers, two of which the dentist characterized as "aggressive suckers" which has affected their bites.

So, hit me with your best shot. What are your best tips for breaking the thumb sucking habit?

How toTeach Your Child to Read

I have posted here before about how I have used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

Today, I would like to show you how easy it is to use this method.

The book tells the parent exactly what to say and when to say it. Notice the red words prompt the parent to give an example, "Annie is a girl."

You can see in this portion, the red words prompt the parent to question the child's comprehension. "Who sat on the log? Who didn't sit on the log?"

Could it be any simpler? There is no guess work or thinking up what to ask the child next.

Here is a video of my five year old doing her daily reading lesson. Notice how when she stumbles or gets stuck, I do not immediately tell her what the word is. Instead, I coach her on what the sounds say and see if she can work it out for herself, which she does when given the chance.

Oh, and please do excuse the Rastafarian dreadlocks. And the commands from the eight year old in the background for her baby sister to "BACK OFF! BACK OFF!" I'm still not sure what that was all about - it's always something in Smockityville!

Not Me!

I am a very responsible and conscientious parent.

When it is a frigid 28 degrees on an early January Sunday morning, I make sure all my children have their coats before we load up to head to church. I am so attentive that when we get there I certainly would NOT allow my five year old to leave hers on her seat, exit the car, and make the long walk from the packed parking lot without her coat.

Not me! That would be irresponsible parenting!

I am also so conscientious that I would never allow my children to pack themselves for an out of town trip and when we got to our destination and one of them had forgotten a toothbrush, I certainly would NOT tell them to just use mine!

Not me! That would be unsanitary!

I would also never procrastinate so much that I would be sewing the last of seven sets of Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve.

Not me! That would be adding stress to an already stressful time of year.

Smockity Frocks: How It All Began

The photo that started it all.

Well, it's been exactly three years today since Smockity Frocks has been up and running. In blog years, that's practically a lifetime!

In honor of this momentous occasion, and for your reading pleasure, I thought I would recap the events which led to me saying, "Hey, you know what would be nifty? If I were to publish the thoughts that are bouncing around in my head for the whole world wide web to read!"

December 2006 - Barbara from Mommy Life announces an apron photo contest while lamenting that her favorite oilcloth apron is no longer for sale. I see the photo of the apron and think, "I could totally make that!" I also decide to enter the contest and coerce my children into taking goofy pictures of me posing in an apron I made from a vintage pattern.
January 2007 - I let Barbara know that I have succeeded in making the oilcloth apron and she helps me get this thing called a "blog" set up so I can sell them. I quickly come up with the name "Smockity Frocks" based on one of my favorite hobbies, smocking. Barbara graciously kicks off my very first day online with an announcement on her blog.
Later that same month, I won Barbara's apron photo contest by popular vote!
I decide I like blogging and proceed to post all manner of riveting material, like this stellar photo essay and this lengthy treatise on how we pronounce Arnold Palmer's name.

So, there you have it. That's how a little thing called Smockity Frocks was born.

Some days I don't know if I have any thoughts left inside this ol' noggin that I haven't already typed out, but then genius strikes and I come up with a brilliant composition on how binding undergarments can be a treacherous thing and I find inspiration once again to keep my readership informed.

It's just my little gift to you, my dear readers. Keeping you safe from the dangers of latex is the least I can do.

Bibles Provided For Those in Need

My friend Amy, from Mom's Toolbox, emailed me today, IN ALL CAPS!, with some very exciting news!

She and Ted, the founder of the Bible in 90 Days program, are so excited about the number of people who are committing to reading the Bible in 90 days, and they want each participant to have every advantage to be able to complete the challenge.

Managing Computer Time

This edition of Works For Me Wednesday is another "backwards" edition, wherein bloggers are asking for tips instead of giving them. **(Okay, so being the super smart blogger that I am, I got the dates mixed up for the backwards edition! Please, disregard my bumbling efforts at actually having my ducks in a row, and by all means give me your best advice! Next week I'm sure I'll have some handy dandy tips on how paper towels are nifty for wiping up spills and cell phones are great as portable communication devices!)

The tips I would like to gather from you today are about managing computer time.

Savvy bloggers know a certain amount of social networking is good for the health of the ol' blog. That means we bloggers must not only spend time composing, editing, and publishing post material, but also using media like Twitter and Facebook to network with other bloggers.

The thing is, if I am Twittering when no one else is on, it isn't doing much good. Kind of like talking to myself, which I would never do and you can't prove anything so that's the story I'm sticking with.

So...

How do you manage your computer time?
Do you schedule certain times during the day for writing, Twittering, etc.
How do you manage linking up to carnivals like Works For Me Wednesday or Not Me Monday without hopping on and checking all throughout the day?

Any tips will be appreciated, as I am hoping to be more efficient in my time management in 2010!

Lisa at Bitsy Bee asked several questions, so I will take them separately.

What games or learning activities do you find are good to do with young children, aged 18 months to 3 years?

Reading aloud is our primary learning activity for toddlers and preschoolers. It allows for all kinds of teaching opportunities like counting, identifying colors, letters, animals, etc. The children also get to practice waiting, taking turns turning pages, and listening quietly.

We also use books on CD, puzzles, coloring, clay, and tracing activities.

Helping in the kitchen and with other chores is also a valuable learning activity. There is plenty of time for talking, counting, measuring, etc.

Do you have any tips for feeding multiple children of different ages? Does everyone have to eat everything off their plate at dinner or do they just serve themselves what they want out of large dishes? Is there any way to encourage my 14 month old baby to begin to feed hereself? I spend a lot of time sitting with her encouraging her to eat and feeding her from a spoon.

My husband and I serve the plates with very small portions. Anyone can have seconds on anything if all food on the first plate has been eaten. No one HAS to eat anything, but they will not get anything else to eat until the next meal time.

As far as babies go, we haven't used baby food or spoon fed our babies since the fifth one was born, five and a half years ago. When they are 8-10 months old and start to show interest in eating solids, we put them in a high chair with a few soft peas or Cheerios and let them practice picking them up and getting them to the mouth. I still breastfeed, so there is no urgency to make sure the baby gets a certain amount down the hatch. It doesn't take long for baby to get the hang of it, and after a month or so we can put out a variety of soft foods and a fair amount gets eaten.

From that point on, the baby realizes that she can feed herself and does so.

What ways do your older children help to look after or even teach your younger children?

My older children are a HUGE help with the younger ones, especially when we are getting out the door to go somewhere. Each big kid makes sure his or her buddy has on suitable clothing, socks and shoes, and a jacket if needed. They also buckle and unbuckle car seats when needed, which eliminates the need for mom to climb back and forth over three rows of seats.

The older children also read aloud to the littler ones. Every day when I am doing a reading lesson with the five year old, the second grader is reading aloud to the two little ones. This gives her an opportunity to practice her reading while giving the little ones some extra reading time, and I have a period of uninterrupted instruction with an easily distractable Kindergartner.

Finally, do you have any tips for curling hair? My hair is straight with a slight kink if I don't blow dry it but I would like loose curls that stay in all day. Any ideas?

Ready for Christmas!

We made our chocolate cherry mice today and I finished up the last of 7 sets of Christmas pajamas this afternoon. Whew!

Christmas Card Time!

Have you ever ~~been under the intense pressure~~ had the pleasure of creating the perfect Christmas card photo with seven rowdy children? No? Well, me neither. Nope. Not me. No way.

And I would certainly never be heard saying the following.

"Okay, Madison, you hold the baby in the back so no one will notice she's in her pajamas. Her nose is wiped, right? Good!
