this blog was the beginning of a lot of new adventures for me, and since college {which seems like forever ago already} i feel as though i've grown out of this blog and into someone else. one of my goals for this year is to start fresh – to have a new home for my thoughts + inspirations. i am so excited to share with you what will be my new dot com home, which will be unveiled on 01.31.13. i have been dying to share this with y'all and finally make things more streamline. get ready for a new website domain and blog!

i want to thank you all for your loyal following on this blog, suitcases & cardigans. this has been an incredible adventure for the past two years learning about the blogging world, sharpening my design eye, and sharing the world through my eyes with you. i'm excited about this brand new journey {eventually, this blog will be no more and will redirect to the new domain} and i'll be taking time off posting here to get brand new content ready on the flip side. look forward to what's ahead, y'all!

on taking risks

goal / rule of thumb #2 i have for this year is to take more risks. it's so easy to get in the routine of things, like always going to the same coffee shop because you know the barista, but there's something refreshing about discovering / experiencing something new. i think there are so many benefits to taking risks and the obstacle is typically fear – fear of yourself, opinions of others, rejection, or loss.

i hope you'll take some time this week with me and think about a long-term risk you need to take in order to help you grow, and maybe a risk you could take this week that would change up your norm. for me, this means finally learning to ride a bike, having the courage to meet new people, being assertive and sticking to my guns.

last month, i had a special DIY project from fig. 2 design to make some fun placecards! we worked with the oh-so-talented manvi who styled + shot this lovely tablescape in prep for a bright bazaar new year's bash! it was a fun day at the office figuring out how to make party hats extra festive for this table setting.

(1) i used some of our gold fig. 2 gift wrap to cut out these templates i discovered on oh happy day for the hats.

(2) after lining the bottom with some double-sided tape, i covered it with layers of festive glitter!

(3) for the topper, i cut up some gold tinsel {found at your local party store}, taped it to a white candy stick, and inserted it at the top of the party hat.

(4) using one of our gift tags, we created placecards for each hat.

manvi really knocks it out of the park every time and dreams these shoots beyond what we could ever imagine while creating the paper products. thanks for making us look spectacular! i love that this was for a new year's shoot, but it's perfect for any kind of festive event or birthday party. thanks for having us on your blog, will!

hello friends! thanks for your patience in my long posting break. i hope you all had a great holiday as i did. i recently enjoyed spending the beginning of my 2013 in NYC with some wonderful friends of mine – exploring museums, making memories over good eats and...getting each other sick. it was definitely worth it to be in good company.

it's actually taken me a long time to really comb through 2012 to reflect upon it. and i've just scratched the surface on thinking about 2013...what my goals might be and such. i finally started thinking about it on my 4.5-hour bus ride from DC to NYC, and in some ways it made me quite depressed thinking about what i wanted for myself a year ago and how i haven't "reached" my ridiculously lofty goals. what a way to humble myself.

i've resolved to make some general goals / rules to live by for the year, which i will begin to share with you here. i've been inspired by a few articles my friends have posted, mainly these two {one and two}. never have i had a problem with dreaming. i like to dream, and dream big. the issue seems to be how to be practical in my season of life and learning how to connect the dots. so, here's to 2013 and my first goal / rule of the year.

{one} unplug once a week.

okay, this may sound really simple, but i think this will be a legitimate challenge for me seeing as how i own an iphone and frequently instagram + tweet. i'm not one to go overboard and post all my emotions on the world wide web, but i know {and always have to re-realize} that fresh air and a pen + paper do very well for me – emotionally, physically and spiritually. in my efforts to be an active participant in others' lives and my own, this is my first rule for the year!

i'd say this is a good start.

christmas is almost here and i can hardly believe it! i'll be taking a break for the week, but here are some great links to keep you occupied while i'm gone!

• it's amazing to see all the talented people in forbes' 30 under 30 this year, including musicians like taylor swift, designers like jessica hische and founders of companies like dropbox and reddit. what ridiculous talent out there.

• if you're in need of some good humor, you should watch this fake commercial for averagé - America's most popular clothing line about guys fashion. i think it's brilliant and quite humorous...

• finally, blake lively + ryan reynolds' wedding has been published in this month's issue of martha stewart weddings! i'm so proud of them for not allowing any press at their wedding and not posting pictures of themselves to blow it all up. it's definitely a challenge for any celebrity to keep things as intimate as possible, though i am dying to see her gown.

• camille styles + kate spade teamed up for a christmas morning brunch and it's to die for! one day i'll throw a party like that on christmas for sure!

• i loved this article from always a blogsmaid regarding the why the instagram policy “scare” should make you more aware – very well-written and insightful.

i wrote on the chalkboard in our kitchen for the first time the other day. i usually use chalk pen whenever i do chalk writing, but i totally forgot how difficult it is to write in chalk. anyway, here's to wishing you a very merry christmas! i'll be back posting again the week after christmas. hope y'all have a safe + warm one!

i have been hard at work writing christmas cards and addressing envelopes for the holidays in hopes to send everything out today and tomorrow – yipes! and, no, the lovely calligraphy above is not my own {hah, i could only wish!}, but of feast calligraphy. yes, swoon away!! i'm far from a lot of my family + friends {hey, texas!!}, so i've got a stack full of snail mail going out this year. what have you been doing to get ready for the holidays?

if you haven't bought cards yet, here are some of my favorites that i'm sending out this year! washi {japanese paper} tape is my best friend when it comes to snail mail + gifting.

this is the last time these digits will happen in our lifetime. i'm sure everyone has heard about this by now, but i wanted to share this amazing video from google. i can't believe another year is almost over – they just go by faster as you get older, it seems. check out lots of interesting stats about what people searched for on google in 2012. i also found this article in the atlantic wire about today's date quite hilarious.

DIY snow globes @ anthropologie

yesterday i helped with a special arctic crafts for kids at anthropologie event at my store and it was such a blast! we made snow globes out of mason jars and had coloring activities for the younger ones. i had a lot of responses on my instagram image {believe it or not} on how to do this, so here's a little how-to to kick off the week.

we actually took this DIY from the queen – martha stewart – but i'll explain here what we did.

here are the materials you'll need:

• mason / canning jars {they seal tightly and are a good, heavy weight}

• centerpieces of your choice {we got trees + penguins}

• distilled water {you can buy by the gallon at a grocery store}

• glycerin {a small bottle should suffice unless you're making more than 25}

• hot glue or gorilla glue {something that's heavy duty + fast-drying}

• glitter! {any kind, any color}

my awesome manager who i worked with on the event went to local stores {like walmart, target, michael's, walgreens, toys 'r' us} in search of fun holiday things to put in the snow globes. she chose these small christmas trees that came in a variety of colors and a bucket of small happy feet penguins, but you could use anything you want!

// step 1: pick out your centerpieces + hot glue to the jar lid {we did all the gluing for our kids, and you may want to as well especially if you go with gorilla glue}. you want to make sure that your centerpieces will fit inside the rim of the mason jar top so you can still close the jar later.

// step 2: while the glue is drying, fill the mason jar to the rim with water and a dash of glycerin.

the glycerin gives the water more density so the snow gets that slow falling effect we all love.

{if you're using the quart size mason jar, about one squeeze will do. for smaller sizes, i'd suggest half a squeeze.}

then, add whatever glitter{s} you'd like to the water.

{you'll start to notice the glitter will "fall" from the surface of the water – stir it around until more falls to get an idea of how much snow you have. it's really easy to end up with a 'blizzard', so start small}

// step 3: put the lid with your centerpieces on the jar as you would normally and seal tightly. flip your mason jar over + shake! you'll have a little winter wonderland in front of your eyes. we watching many a kids' eye light up with delight when it began to snow, even many of the adults were even mesmerized and asked us how we did it.

we let the kids get creative – some chose to have a family of penguins in their snow globe instead of a tree, some kids mixed the colors of glitter we had available. it really depends on how large the centerpieces are and how well they fit in the mason jar. i hope you guys enjoyed this and will make snow globes of your own this season because it is so easy!

one of the best things about working retail this time of year is getting to see all the amazing winter wear, ornaments, and holiday decor come fresh out of the shipping boxes. i'm particularly a fan of many of our new shiny gadgets at anthropologie. these are some of my favorites that will make your holiday party a little extra fancy this year.

the pooled gold water glass is currently my favorite for the kitchen and the pictures hardly do it justice – you've gotta go in and see them! this entire set is so classy.

the measuring cup hedgehogs are adorable {but make sure you hand wash these little guys!} and imagine setting up your holiday tablescape using these golden pine candles!

it's getting quite chilly here and a part of me is just ready for the snow already! i often feel like bearing the cold isn't worth it unless there's some white flakes on the ground, but that rarely happens in texas so i'm excited to be seeing some this year! winter means bundling up, toasty fireplaces, the smells + joys of Christmas and ice skating. what are you looking forward to this winter?

i am all about kate. it could be kate beckinsale, middleton, hudson, somerville, spade, or her paperie – i'm all over it. i loved kate beckinsale ever since i saw serendipity for the first time. who doesn't love kate middleton's style, or kate hudson's sense of humor in how to lose a guy in 10 days? i'd say there's a likely chance i'll name one of my kids kate.

i'm obsessed with kate somerville skincare products. they're gentle on your skin and smell fresh + clean {none of that fruity business – sorry bath & body works fans}.

i hope you all have a very wonderful thanksgiving weekend. i'm doing a quick texas stop in houston and dallas this week {as you have probably seen in my instagrams}, so i'll be taking a hiatus from the blog for the week. i've been so blessed by many in texas and it's such a special thing to gather everyone together for the holidays. it's sweet to see familiar faces and be with loved ones like the good 'ol days, even though things have changed.

i love wearing my adelita brocade mini dress for the holidays! it's so festive + classy with a great keyhole in the back...oh, and it has pockets. i also went to the cutest stationery shop in houston the other day. be sure to check out ph design shop!

as of late, i've had some delicious grub. i don't usually post about the food i eat, but with the new instagram pages working now i thought it was fitting {though i'm disappointed you can't download the images from the webpage}. here's some yum!

{one} my first time at jaleo by José Andrés was delicious. i went with a few experts who knew the menu. we got a variety of cheeses, apples + manchego, and red beet salad (pictured), along with patatas bravas and hanger steak.

{two} anyone who's been to good stuff eatery by the capitol knows it is goood stuff. their hand-spun shakes are to die for and everyone loves spike's sunnyside burger {my personal favorite is the 'shroom burger}.

{three} kimbab aka korean sushi is easily one of my favorite korean snack foods. i got some the other day at mandu rang kimbab erang, this little white house in Annandale. it's a small shop, but truly authentic and reasonably priced.

{four} right next door is a more noticeable restaurant called to sok jip. make sure you bring a korean-speaking friend with you, otherwise you'll have a difficult time ordering here. everything is good here, but they're especially known for their soups and bibimbap {what i ordered, pictured above}.

{five} and how can you forget dessert?! i am obsessed with the sweet lobby in eastern market. i love their macarons, but their cupcakes are equally as delicious! you can never go wrong.

since the moment i saw her work, i was in love. lindsay of lindsay letters is nothing short of incredible. her modern + whimsically penned works are a must-have! i'm so excited about the new lindsay letters shop so everyone can get in on the fun. this whatever is lovely print in rose gold is one of my favorites.

lindsay also released a new holiday line! since i'll probably be in the dc/va area for christmas, i can totally see this white christmas print on my wall in eager anticipation for some good snow this year.

here's a quick look at the other holiday prints. really, they're all fabulous. how could you choose just one?!

until i have a permanent home i'll be holding off on getting one of these, but i'm all about having a good stamp. lindsay's custom stamps are phenomenal and so unique.

i owe my obsession with lindsay's work to my boss lady at fig. 2 design studio who knows all these fabulous people who do amazing things. we recently created this nautical wedding suite for brides magazine with lindsay {grab a copy and check it out!}. big thanks to MK for the stunner pic.

hand lettering will never ever go out of style for me.

when i own a house one day, it will all be over. i will probably be very broke from funneling all my funds to that of my new abode. good thing i don't have a house right now and am very stingy when it comes to purchasing home goods since i'm never in one place for very long.

anyhow, in addition to my west elm + restoration hardware + crate & barrel obsession, i have added dunlin to my list even though they're based in australia. here are a few of my favorite picks so far:

this fog linen placemat in navy + white stripes is perfect for my love of all things nautical. and these saucepans with a spout are simple + genius and so cute in rose or white.

i just want to jump in this bed covered in matteo tat cotton and sleep forever.

this charcoal striped jute storage basket is perfect for extra throw blankets + pillows when it's chilly out and you just want to cozy it up on the couch. i'm also loving this ketch yacht well glass by davey lighting that was originally designed for yacht interiors.

sorry for being MIA all this time! it's been a crazy fest with hurricane sandy coming through, but i promise for more regular posting to resume next week! i have been busy working at anthropologie the past few months (if you haven't noticed from my instagram). we're gearing up from the holidays and the Christmas music has already begun at our store. here's a little sneak peek at a new dress i splurged on from anthro that i am so excited about!
