How to install Bash on Windows 11

Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 was released nearly 3 years ago. This brought the ability to run the Bash shell and run Linux binary executables that you’d be able to run on Ubuntu Linux.

Microsoft has since only continued to improve its Windows Subsystem for Linux, and an update in a Windows 10 preview build back in mid-2020 made it easier to install Bash. That method carried over to Windows 11. To install Bash, open Windows Terminal as an admin. You can do this by right-clicking the Windows icon and selecting “Windows Terminal (Admin)” from the power user menu. (If you’re on Windows 10, you may see it listed as “Windows Powershell (Admin)” in the menu.)

Run Windows Terminal as an admin

In Windows Terminal, run this command:

wsl --install

Windows will then begin downloading and installing Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Subsystem for Linux, WSL Kernel, and GUI App Support. It will also download Ubuntu, but will install it after a reboot. This process could take several minutes.

Once all of the assets are downloaded, you’ll need to reboot your system for the changes to take effect. You can go the traditional route of rebooting your PC or, since you’re already in the terminal, run this command:

shutdown /r /t 0

Once your PC has rebooted, installation will continue automatically. After Ubuntu has successfully downloaded and installed, you’ll be prompted to create a username and password. Once entered, Ubuntu will fire up, and you’ll be ready to start using Bash in Windows, to your heart’s content.

Windows 11 launched last year and if you’ve already downloaded and installed it, you’re probably aware of the fact that the operating system is far from finished. Unlike Windows 7 and older versions, Windows 11 still feels like a work in progress. The company is continuing to add new features and design consistency is still missing.

Microsoft recently redesigned the ‘Open with’ dialog from the Windows 8-era and the tech giant is now exploring new design ideas for the Shut down dialog. For those unaware, we’re talking about the Shut down dialog that appears on the desktop when you press Alt + F4.

As you can see in the below screenshot, the new design removes the Windows logo and ‘This PC’ icon from the Shut down dialog. The redesigned Shut down dialog promises a simplified look and makes use of the system colour accent. Additionally, there is another experimental design that applies Mica to the title bar of the dialog.

This redesigned Shut down dialog was quietly added to Windows 11 with Build 25174.

We’re expecting another update to the Shut down dialog that will bring WinUI design material to the buttons and dropdown menu.

While some of us may not like dramatic design makeovers, in many ways, this is for the best. The Windows 10 that many of us use today remains supported and is likely to stay stable as Microsoft is busy with the development of Windows 11. If you prefer the new design direction and a couple of new features, Windows 11 is for you.

It is also worth noting that Windows 10 that we use today is different from the Windows 10 that launched in 2015. In the past few years, Microsoft has added some useful new features to the operating system.

2nd technical preview of next-generation Windows Server 2016!

Microsoft recently released the second technical preview of its next-generation Windows Server product, commonly referred to as Windows Server 2016.

So far, there hasn’t been much talk from Microsoft about the next version of its Windows Server product, although the company did release a technical preview. Microsoft is expected to demonstrate Windows Server 2016 at its Build conference in San Francisco this month.
The move to delay final Windows Server’s next release until 2016 comes as a surprise. Microsoft typically releases its client and server operating systems close together, and with Windows 10 set to launch later this year, many industry watchers expected to see Windows Server vNext around that same timeframe.

Many of us may have had our computer suffer from a hardware or software problem. Usually the way out is to either call a computer expert over or take the system to the nearest service centre. However, you can easily get help for common issues using a remote connection.

Both Windows and MAC have built-in remote assistance features that allow you to share control of your desktop/laptop remotely with an expert over the Internet, who can then examine and solve the issue.

WINDOWS PCS

The Remote Assistance feature first appeared in Windows XP. To enable this feature, go to the Control Panel > System and in the window that opens up, click on the Remote Tab. Check the box that says 'Allow Remote Assistance Invitations'. You can invite an expert you know to connect to your system via a secure remote connection by sending an email or by using Windows Messenger.

Once connected, the expert will be able view your desktop screen, control your mouse and chat with you side-by-side in the remote assistance window. Note that you will need to share control of your system with the expert by clicking on the 'Take Control' button on top (a security feature). Once the expert solves your problem, you can disconnect the remote assistance session and start using your system.

MAC

On a MAC, there are two ways to provide remote control of a system for assistance. The first (and simpler) method is by using iChat/Messages. Just add the user to your chat list, start a conversation and select 'Screen Share Enabled' from the Video menu on top.

The second way is to go to System Preferences > Sharing. Check the box that says 'Screen Sharing' and click on the computer settings button. Check both the options in the pop-up window. You will also need to specify a password for accessing your system. The expert will be required to enter the password to connect to your system. The one issue with this method is that it is really easy to use over a local network, but if the expert is in another location, you need to know how to configure your networking devices (port forwarding).

Battlefield 4 Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance

With roots that stretch back more than a decade and enough fans to justify new content every year, Battlefield is among the handful of franchises that needs no introduction around here. Even if you hate EA's approach modern military madness, you can typically expect Battlefield's graphics to raise the bar. This year's release is no different, of course, having been built with an updated version of the Frostbite engine.
Frostbite 3 enables more realistic environments with higher resolution textures and particle effects. Part of this includes a "networked" water system that ensures all players in a game see the same wave at the same time. Beyond the networking voodoo happening behind the scenes, Battlefield 4's waves are an incredible spectacle. Water battles in small vessels are exciting as your vision can be blocked by passing waves.

DICE also says it has overhauled the engine's Tessellation support to enable greater realism, including improved destruction. In short, watching HD YouTube videos doesn't do any justice to the beauty of BF4's graphics, which may just be the best we've ever seen. Regardless, there's no doubting that Frostbite 3 is on the cutting edge of engines and it's more apparent than ever that the next generation is here...

Testing Methodology

We tested the single player portion of the game to ensure consistent results -- something we simply can't do with others. We'd need a bunch players to participate in simulating a multiplayer environment for the benchmark and they'd all have to perform the same exact actions hundreds of times. We could have tested a multiplayer map by ourselves, but that would have likely been less demanding than single player.
We settled on the start of the fourth mission (titled "Singapore") which begins on the US vessel Valkyrie as the team walks to an inflatable rib where they have a brief discussion and then jump in before being lowered down. Although the test takes place in the Valkyrie's launch bay, the scene seems to use a lot of GPU and CPU power. There is heavy use of DoF (Depth of Field) here so perhaps that is what taxes the GPU.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter GPU & CPU Performance

Released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October 2010, Danger Close and EA's Medal of Honor reboot brought the franchise to modern-day Afghanistan after a dozen previous titles set during World War II. Having been a fan of entries including Medal of Honor: Airborne and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, I was excited to crack open the latest version and test its performance on enthusiast hardware.
Although its graphics weren't groundbreaking, 2010's Medal of Honor looked decent while allowing low-end GPUs to provide playable performance using respectable quality settings. Looking at the old benchmarks I see that even then quad-core processors were a must, with dual-core chips giving half as much performance. Having grown accustomed to Modern Warfare-like titles, Medal of Honor's relatively tame GPU requirements weren't too shocking.
Interestingly, it seems Medal of Honor: Warfighter might buck that trend, as its recommended system specifications call for no less than a 3GHz quad-core processor paired with a GeForce GTX 560 or Radeon HD 6950. Given those upper-end requirements, we expect the title to be fairly demanding with its visuals maxed out, and we'll be putting a ton of past and present-gen cards through their paces.
Before moving on, it's worth noting that unlike 2010's Medal of Honor which used separate engines for single player and multiplayer (Unreal Engine 3 and Frostbite), Warfighter uses DICE's Frostbite 2 engine -- the same software that powers Battlefield 3. As such, EA's latest military shooter only supports DirectX 10 and 11 rendering modes on PC, which may partly explain the high-end hardware requirements.

Testing Methodology

We'll be testing 29 DirectX 11 graphics card configurations from AMD and Nvidia across all price ranges. The latest beta drivers were used for every card. We installed an Intel Core i7-3960X in our test bed to remove any CPU bottlenecks that could influence high-end GPU scores.
Shortly before Warfighter arrived, both AMD and Nvidia released pre-WHQL drivers that claimed to provide improved performance and stability in a number of games. AMD in particular noted several bug fixes, thus our decision to go with the latest beta drivers.
We used Fraps to measure frame rates during 90 seconds of gameplay footage from Medal of Honor Warfighter's first single player level, Unintended Consequences, which offers the following description: "A simple detonation of a small cargo container goes wrong, and sets in motion a race to stop a global terror network."
The test begins at the start of the mission which opens with a team of U.S. Navy SEALs composed of Mother, Preacher, and Voodoo who immerse themselves in water to be hidden before the player takes control.
Mother and Preacher emerge from the water and the player must eliminate enemies guarding the port using suppressed weaponry before taking out another guard and plating a charge on a truck to sabotage a black market arms deal.
We tested Medal of Honor: Warfighter at three common desktop display resolutions: 1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 2560x1600, using the high and ultra-quality preset settings. Both presets were tested in the DirectX 11 mode with vsync disabled.
By default, the high quality preset turns antialiasing off while ambient occlusion is set to HBAO. Meanwhile, the ultra quality preset sets antialiasing to 4xMSAA while ambient occlusion is still set to HBAO.
