Harvard pentru aceasta onoare, anul viitor

îmi voi schimba slujba si va fi frumos sa am, in sfârșit, o diplomă de absolvire a colegiului pe cv-ul meu. Aplaud absolvenții pentru că au ales o rută mult mai directă către obținerea diplomei de absolvire. Pentru mine sunt mulțumit ca am fost numit cel mai de succes om care a abandonat Harvard-ul. Cred ca asta mă face cel mai bun din categoria mea, obținând calificativul ca cel mai bun dintre cei ce nu au reușit, dar vreau de asemenea sa fiu recunoscut drept cel care l-a convins pe Steve Balmer sa renunțe la școala de afaceri. Sunt o influenta negativă si de aceea am fost invitat sa vorbesc la festivitatea dvs. de absolvire. Daca as fi vorbit la cea de orientare, puțini dintre dvs. ar mai fi aici astăzi.

Harvard a fost o experiență fenomenală pentru mine, viața academică a fost fascinantă, obișnuiam să particip la cursuri pentru care nici nu mă înscrisesem iar viața în cămin a fost minunată. Locuind in Radcliff la cămin unde întotdeauna erau mulți oameni în camera mea chiar și noaptea târziu, discutând lucruri, pentru ca toată lumea știa că nu îmi fac griji în legătură cu trezitul dis de dimineață. Astfel am ajuns sa fiu liderul grupului anti-social, sustinandu-ne reciproc pentru a obține respingerea tuturor acelor oameni sociali. Radcliff era un loc extraordinar pentru locuit, erau multe domnisoare acolo si cei mai mulți dintre băieți erau tipul tocilarului, a savantului nebun, ceea ce mi-a oferit cele mai bune șanse, daca înțelegeți la ce mă refer. Acolo am învățat trista lecție care spune că creșterea șanselor nu garantează și succesul.

Una dintre cele mai pregnante amintiri de atunci, a fost in ianuarie 1975 cand am sunat o companie din Albuquerque, New Mexico, care construiau primele computere personale, cărora le-am oferit un software spre vânzare, temându-mă că își vor da seama că nu sunt decât un student ce locuiește în camera sa de cămin si îmi vor trânti telefonul în nas. În loc de aceasta, au răspuns ca încă nu sunt încă pregătiți pentru aceasta si sa-i vizitez peste o lună, ceea ce a fost un lucru bun întrucât noi nici nu ne apucasem încă, de scris software-ul. Din acel moment am început să lucrez la un proiect extra școlar, care a marcat, pentru mine, sfârșitul colegiului și începutul unei aventuri remarcabile alături de Microsoft.

Ceea ce îmi amintesc despre Harvard, înainte de toate, este sentimentul de a fi in mijlocul unei comunități înveselitoare de oameni cu o inteligență deosebită, generatoare a unor energii imense, sentiment ce dă naștere unei nevoi de a avansa accelerate și motivante dar care de multe ori, poate intimida până la descurajare, însă întotdeauna creatoare de noi provocări. A fost un uimitor privilegiu, cu toate că am părăsit devreme colegiul, am fost transformat de anii petrecuți la Harvard, de prieteniile care s-au închegat și de ideile la care am lucrat.

Aruncând însă, o serioasă privire în urmă, realizez că am rămas cu un mare regret și anume că am părăsit Harvard-ul fără a avea o reală conștientă despre groaznicele inechități ale lumii, despre diferențele persistente dintre sănătate și bogăție, o oportunitate ce a condamnat milioane de oameni să ducă vieți disperate. Am învățat multe aici, la Harvard, despre ideile noi in politică și economie, am fost puternic expus avansurilor făcute de știință, însă cele mai mari avansuri ale umanității nu sunt măsurate în descoperirile ei, ci in felul în care acele descoperiri sunt aplicate în vederea reducerii inechității.

Indiferent dacă prin democrație, printr-un puternic sistem de educație publică sau un sistem sanitar de calitate sau o gamă largă de oportunități economice, reducerea inechității este cea mai mare realizare a societății umane. Am părăsit colegiul știind foarte puține despre milioanele de tineri înșelați în legătură cu oportunitățile educaționale aici, în această țară, și nu am știut nimic despre milioanele de oameni care traiesc într-o sărăcie de nedescris și despre bolile ce răvășesc populațiile țărilor în curs de dezvoltare. Mi-au trebuit decenii să aflu însă voi, absolvenții, ați ajuns la Harvard într-o perioadă diferită, voi știți mai multe despre inechitățile lumii și despre generațiile anterioare. În anii petrecuți aici, sper ca ați avut o șansă pentru a vă gândi cum, in această epocă a dezvoltării tehnologice accelerate, vom putea in sfârșit să aducem o contribuție semnificativă în vederea reducerii acestor inechități până la dispariție. Imaginați-vă, doar de dragul discuției, că aveți câteva ore pe săptămână și câțiva dolari lunar pe care să-i donați unei cauze și că veți dori să cheltuiți acel timp și acei bani pentru ceea ce va avea cel mai puternic impact în salvarea si îmbunătățirea vieții. Unde i-ați cheltui? Și noi ne confruntăm cu aceeși provocare, cum putem realiza cel mai mare bine, pentru numărul cel mai mare de oameni, cu resursele pe care le deținem. În timpul discuțiilor pe marginea acestor întrebări, soția mea și cu mine am citit un articol despre milioanele de copii care mor în fiecare an în țările sărace din cauza unor boli pe care noi le-am făcut inofensive cu mult timp în urmă în această țară: pojar, malarie, pneumonie, hepatita B, febra galbenă, o boală despre care personal nu am auzit vreodata, un protovirus ucide jumătate de milion de copii in fiecare an, însă niciunul in USA.

Am fost șocați! Ne-am așteptat ca, pentru milioane de copii pe moarte care ar putea fi salvați, lumea întreagă ar face o prioritate să descopere și să livreze medicamentul necesar pentru a-i salva. Dar nu s-a întâmplat așa… Pentru sume sub un dolar s-ar fi putut face intervenții care însă nu au fost furnizate.

Dacă credeți că fiecare viață are valoare egală, este revoltător de aflat că unele sunt apreciate drept meritând a fi salvate, în timp ce altele nu. Ne-am spus: acest lucru nu poate fi adevărat, dar daca este adevărat, trebuie să constituie o prioritate a noastră. Așa că am început o activitate în același fel în care oricine de aici ar începe. Am întrebat cum este posibil ca lumea întreagă să lase acești copii pradă morții? Răspunsul este simplu și tăios, piața nu remunerează salvarea vieților acestor copii și guvernele nu o subvenționează. Astfel copiii mor pentru ca mamele și tații lor nu au avut putere pe piață și vocea lor nu s-a putut face auzită în sistem. Dar noi, voi și cu mine, le avem pe ambele, noi putem face forțele de forfecare ale pieței să funcționeze mai bine pentru cei săraci, dacă putem dezvolta un capitalism mai creativ, daca putem întinde pătrunderea forțelor pieței în așa fel încât mai mulți oameni să poată face un profit sau măcar sa-și câștige existența servind oameni care suferă din cauza marilor inechități. Putem de asemenea convinge guverne din lumea întreagă să cheltuiască banii contribuabililor în feluri care reflectă mai bine valorile acestor oameni care le plătesc taxele. Dacă am putea găsi abordări care să întâmpine nevoile celor săraci intr-un fel în care să genereze profit pentru afaceri și voturi pentru politicieni, am gasi un mod susținut prin care să reducem inechitatea in lume.

Această provocare este fără sfârșit și nu se va putea încheia niciodată. Dar, in ciuda acestui fapt, un efort conștient în a găsi răspunsuri unor astfel de provocări poate schimba lumea. Sunt optimist și cred că împreună putem să o facem. Vorbind cu scepticii, ii aud plângându-se că nu este nicio speranță, spunând că inechitatea a fost cu noi încă de la începuturi și va fi cu noi până la final, doar pentru ca oamenilor nu le pasă.

Disaprob în totalitate acest lucru pentru că eu cred ca ne pasă mai mult decât suntem conștienți, că avem mai multă grijă decât mijloace de a o folosi în practică. Toti cei prezenți la aceasta festivitate în diferite timpuri, au fost martorii unor tragedii umane care ne-au rupt inimile și cu toate acestea nu am făcut nimic, nu pentru că nu ne-a păsat ci pentru că nu am știut ce să facem. Dacă am fi știut cum să ajutăm, am fi acționat. Lipsa schimbării nu este datorată lipsei de preocupare ci unei complexității covârșitoare. Pentru a transforma grija in acțiune, avem nevoie să recunoaștem o problemă, să găsim o soluție și să vedem impactul, dar complexitatea blochează toate cele trei trepte, chiar si cu avansul internetului si știrilor de 24 de ore, este încă o întreprindere complexă pană a reuși să atragi atenția astfel ca oamenii sa vadă adevăratele probleme. Când un avion se prăbușește, oficialii cheamă imediat o conferință de presă, promițând să investigheze, să determine cauza și să prevină accidente similare în viitor. Dar dacă acești oficiali ar fi în totalitate onești, ar spune ca din totalul oamenilor din lume care au decedat astăzi din cauze ce pot fi prevenite, o jumătate dintr-un procent au fost în acest avion. Astfel problema rămâne pe fundal, acolo unde este ușor de ignorat, dar chiar si când o vedem sau citim despre ea, ne este dificil sa ne menținem atenția pe problemă, este dificil de privit suferința când situația este atât de complexă încât la nivel personal nu știm cum am putea ajuta, lăsându-ne impresia că tot ceea ce putem face este sa ne întoarcem privirile. Dacă am putea intr-adevăr să vedem o problemă, ceea ce constituie primul pas, am ajunge la pasul al doilea, tăind din complexitate pentru a găsi o sluție.

Căutarea și identificarea soluțiilor este un pas esențial pentru întâmpinarea dorinței de a fructifica la maxim grija și compasiunea pe care o purtăm semenilor, reușind să oferim răspunsuri viabile, dovedite în mod clar atunci când un individ sau o organizație întreabă:
Eu cum pot ajuta?
Atunci abia putem obține acțiune și ne putem asigura că niciuna dintre resursele celor cărora le pasă nu este irosită în zadar.

Complexitatea face dificilă marcarea unei căi de acțiune pentru fiecare dintre cei cărora le pasă, îngreunând fructificarea aportului personal. Reducerea complexității pentru a găsi soluții, se poate realiza în patru stagii previzibile:
1. Determinarea unui țel de atins.
2. Găsirea adresării (soluției) cu impactul cel mai mare.
3. Livrarea tehnologiei necesare (în modul ideal)
4. Între timp adaptând cea mai bună dintre aplicațiile tehnologice deja existente.

Aceste scenarii fiind valabile indiferent daca este vorba despre ceva sofisticat, cum ar fi un nou medicament sau ceva simplu ca o insomnie. Epidemia SIDA oferă un exemplu. Scopul pe termen lung fiind, desigur, vindecarea bolii, adresarea cu influența (impactul) cea mai mare fiind prevenirea bolii. Tehnologia ideală ar putea fi un vaccin ce oferă imunitate pe viață, cu o singură doză. Astfel guvernele, companiile producătoare de medicamente și fundațiile pun la dispozitie fonduri pentru cercetarea de vaccinuri dar munca lor se estimează că va dura peste un deceniu. Între timp, va trebui să lucrăm cu ceea ce avem la îndemână, și cea mai bună adresare este sa educăm oamenii în scopul evitării unui comportament riscant. Urmărind acest țel pornește din nou ciclul din patru pași, acesta este tiparul însă de o importanță crucială este faptul de a nu ne opri niciodată să regândim și să înfăptuim, dar mai ales sa nu repetăm ceea ce s-a întâmplat în cazul malariei și tuberculozei în secolul 20, sa ne predăm complexității și să renunțăm.

Pasul final, după ce am văzut problema și am găsit o adresare este măsurarea impactului muncii și să împărtășim acel succes sau eșec, astfel încât alții să poată învăța ceva din eforturile depuse.
Este necesar sa avem statisticile, desigur, este necesar să arătăm cum cu ajutorul unui program se vaccinează milioane de copii, să evidențiem o descreștere a numărului de morți infantile din cauza îmbolnăvirilor. Imi amintesc acum câțiva ani cand am participat la Forumul Economic Mondial , unde se discuta, pe marginea sănătății mondiale, despre diverse feluri în care se pot salva milioane de vieți pe tot cuprinsul globului. Milioane! Gandiți-va ce fior, daca ați putea salva doar o singură viață apoi înmulțiți de milioane de ori! Cu toate acestea a fost cel mai plictisitor forum la care am participat vreodata! Atât de plictisitor încât nici măcar eu nu am putut rezista. Ceea ce a făcut acea experiență sa fie izbitoare în mod special, a fost faptul că abia veneam de la un eveniment unde tocmai am prezentat versiunea 13 a unui software unde oamenii au participat contribuind cu comentarii și discutând cu entuziasm.
Iubesc să fac oamenii să discute cu entuziasm despre software, dar de ce nu am putea genera chiar mai mult entuziasm pentru a salva vieți. Nu poți entuziasma oamenii pană nu îi poți aduce într-o stare în care sa vadă și să simtă impactul. Felul în care aceasta se poate realiza, este o altă întrebare complexă, cu toate acestea îmi mențin optimismul.
Da! Inechitatea a fost din totdeauna cu noi, însă, noile unelte de care dispunem pentru a tăia (reduce) din complexitate nu au fost cu noi din totdeauna. Acum 60 de ani George Marshall a făcut prima data această propunere si a venit cu un plan de asistență a națiunilor din afara Europei, el a spus: // Cred că prima dificultate rezulta din faptul că problema este una de așa o enormă complexitate că doar efectele de masă prezentate publicului de către presă și radio, constituie o dificultate excesivă pentru ca omul de rând sa-și poată măcar schița situația de ansamblu. Apariția unei noi clase de computere personale low cost, a dat startul dezvoltării unei puternice rețele care a transformat oportunitățile pentru învățământ și comunicații. Membrii familiei Harvard, prezenți acum în această curte, alcătuiesc una dintre marile colecții de talent intelectual din lume, dar cu ce scop? Fără nicio îndoială, studenții și susținătorii Harvard și-au folosit puterea și priceperea, de-a lungul timpului, pentru a îmbunătăți lumina altora, de aici și de pretutindeni. Dar am putea face mai mult? Poate Harvard să-și dedice intelectul pentru a îmbunătăți viețile oamenilor care nu i-au auzit măcar numele? Permiteți-mi să formulez o cerere către decan și profesori, liderii intelectuali de aici de la Harvard, pe măsură ce dobândiți noi resurse, oferiți premii, revizuiți curriculum-uri și determinați noi cerințe, vă rog întrebați-vă, ar trebui ca mințile noastre cele mai valoroase să se dedice mai mult rezolvării celor mai mari dintre probleme noastre? Ar trebui ca Harvard să încurajeze aptitudinea sa de a se ocupa de cele mai grave inechități mondiale?

Ar trebui ca studenții Harvard să știe despre adâncimile sărăciei globale, despre predominarea foametei în lume, despre deficitul de apă potabilă, despre fete cărora nu le este permis accesul la educație, despre copiii care mor în urma unor boli pe care noi le putem vindeca. Ar trebui ca cei mai privilegiați în lume sa învețe despre viețile celor mai puțin privilegiați din lume?
Acestea nu sunt întrebări retorice!
Veți răspunde cu diplomație, folosind metodele dvs… Mama mea, plină de mândrie în ziua în care am fost admis aici, nu a contenit niciodată să mă preseze să fac mai mult pentru ceilalți. Cu câteva zile înainte să mă căsătoresc, a găzduit un eveniment, în care a citit cu voce tare o scrisoare despre căsătorie, pe care o scrisese Melindei. Mama mea era foarte bolnavă, suferind de cancer la acea dată, dar a văzut o oportunitate în plus pentru a-și face cunoscut mesajul și în încheierea scrisorii a spus: //din partea celor cărora multe le sunt dăruite, mult este așteptat!//

(Aplauze)

Când este să socotim ceea ce mulți dintre noi, cei prezenți aici în această curte, am primit în dar, măsurat în talent, privilegii și oportunități, aproape că nu este nicio limită în ceea ce lumea are dreptul să aștepte din partea noastră.

Voi absolvenții, veniți într-o epocă și într-un timp uimitor, după ce părăsiți Harvard beneficiați de o tehnologie pe care membrii clasei mele nu au avut-o. Aveți un înalt grad de conștientizare asupra inechității globale, pe care generația mea nu l-a avut. Aveți mai multe decât am avut noi, trebuie să porniți mai curând și să continuați o perioadă mai lungă și sper că veți reveni aici la Harward, după alți 30 de ani și să reflectați asupra ceea ce ați realizat cu talentul și energia dvs. Sper că vă veți auto judeca, nu doar asupra realizărilor profesionale, cât și asupra felului în care ați rezolvat cele mai mari inechități ale lumii și asupra felului în care ați tratat pe cei ce se află la jumătate de glob distanță și nu au nimic altceva în comun cu dvs. în afară de propria lor umanitate.

Have you ever wanted to stay young a little longerand put off aging? This is a dream of the ages. But scientists have for a long time thought this just was never going to be possible. They thought you just wear out, there's nothing you can do about it -- kind of like an old shoe. But if you look in nature, you see that different kinds of animals can have really different lifespans.
Now these animals are different from one another, because they have different genes. So that suggests that somewhere in these genes, somewhere in the DNA, are genes for aging,genes that allow them to have different lifespans. So if there are genes like that, then you can imagine that, if you could change one of the genes in an experiment, an aging gene, maybe you could slow down aging and extend lifespan. And if you could do that, then you could find the genes for aging. And if they exist and you can find them, then maybe one could eventually do something about it.

So we've set out to look for genes that control aging.And we didn't study any of these animals. Instead, we studied a little, tiny, round worm called C. elegans,which is just about the size of a comma in a sentence. And we were really optimistic that we could find something because there had been a report of a long-lived mutant. So we started to change genes at random, looking for long-lived animals. And we were very lucky to find that mutations that damage one single gene called daf-2 doubled the lifespan of the little worm.

So you can see in black, after a month -- they're very short-lived; that's why we like to study them for studies of aging -- in black, after a month, the normal worms are all dead. But at that time, most of the mutant worms are still alive. And it isn't until twice as long that they're all dead. And now I want to show what they actually look like in this movie here. So the first thing you're going to see is the normal wormwhen it's about college student age -- a young adult.It's quite a cute little fellow. And next you're going to see the long-lived mutant when it's young. So this animal is going to live twice as long. Is it miserable? It doesn't seem to be. It's active. You can't tell the difference really. And they can be completely fertile --have the same number of progeny as the normal worms do.

Now get out your handkerchiefs here. You're going to see, in just two weeks, the normal worms are old.You can see the little head moving down at the bottom there. But everything else is just lying there.The animal's clearly in the nursing home. And if you look at the tissues of the animal, they're starting to deteriorate. You know, even if you've never seen one of these little C. elegans -- which probably most of you haven't seen one -- you can tell they're old -- isn't that interesting?

So there's something about aging that's kind of universal. And now here is the daf-2 mutant. One gene is changed out of 20,000, and look at it. It's the same age, but it's not in the nursing home; it's going skiing. This is what's really cool: it's aging more slowly. It takes this worm two days to age as much as the normal worm ages in one day. And when I tell people about this, they tend to think of maybe an 80 or 90 year-old person who looks really good for being 90 or 80. But it's really more like this: let's say you're a 30 year-old guy -- or in your 30s -- and you're a bachelor and you're dating people. And you meet someone you really like, you get to know her. And you're in a restaurant, and you say, "Well how old are you?" She says, "I'm 60." That's what it's like. And you would never know. You would never know, until she told you.

(Laughter)

Okay. So what is the daf-2 gene? Well as you know, genes, which are part of the DNA, they're instructions to make a protein that does something. And the daf-2 gene encodes a hormone receptor. So what you see in the picture there is a cell with a hormone receptor in red punching through the edge of the cell. So part of it is like a baseball glove. Part of it's on the outside,and it's catching the hormone as it comes by in green. And the other part is on the inside where it sends signals into the cell.

Okay, so what is the daf-2 receptor telling the inside of the cell? I just told you that, if you make a mutation in the daf-2 gene cell, that you get a receptor that doesn't work as well; the animal lives longer. So that means that the normal function of this hormone receptor is to speed up aging. That's what that arrow means. It speeds up aging. It makes it go faster. So it's like the animal has the grim reaper inside of itself,speeding up aging. So this is altogether really, really interesting. It says that aging is subject to control by the genes, and specifically by hormones. So what kind of hormones are these? There's lots of hormones. There's testosterone, adrenalin. You know about a lot of them. These hormones are similar to hormones that we have in our bodies. The daf-2 hormone receptor is very similar to the receptor for the hormone insulin and IGF-1.

Now you've all heard of at least insulin. Insulin is a hormone that promotes the uptake of nutrients into your tissues after you eat a meal. And the hormone IGF-1 promotes growth. So these functions were known for these hormones for a long time, but our studies suggested that maybe they had a third function that nobody knew about -- maybe they also affect aging. And it's looking like that's the case.

So after we made our discoveries with little C. elegans, people who worked on other kinds of animals started asking, if we made the same daf-2 mutation, the hormone receptor mutation, in other animals, will they live longer? And that is the case in flies. If you change this hormone pathway in flies, they live longer. And also in mice -- and mice are mammals like us. So it's an ancient pathway,because it must have arisen a long time ago in evolution such that it still works in all these animals.And also, the common precursor also gave rise to people.

So maybe it's working in people the same way. And there are hints of this. So for example, there was one study that was done in a population of Ashkenazi Jews in New York City. And just like any population,most of the people live to be about 70 or 80, but some live to be 90 or 100. And what they found was that people who lived to 90 or 100 were more likely to have daf-2 mutations -- that is, changes in the genethat encodes the receptor for IGF-1. And these changes made the gene not act as well as the normal gene would have acted. It damaged the gene. So those are hints suggesting that humans are susceptible to the effects of the hormones for aging.

So the next question, of course, is: Is there any effect on age-related disease? As you age, you're much more likely to get cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, all sorts of diseases. It turns out that these long-lived mutants are more resistant to all these diseases. They hardly get cancer, and when they do it's not as severe. So it's really interesting, and it makes sense in a way, that they're still young, so why would they be getting diseases of aging until their old? So it suggests that, if we could have a therapeutic or a pill to take to replicate some of these effects in humans, maybe we would have a way of combating lots of different age-related diseases all at once. So how can a hormone ultimately affect the rate of aging? How could that work?

Well it turns out that in the daf-2 mutants, a whole lot of genes are switched on in the DNA that encode proteins that protect the cells and the tissues, and repair damage. And the way that they're switched onis by a gene regulator protein called FOXO. So in a daf-2 mutant -- you see that I have the X drawn here through the receptor. The receptor isn't working as well. Under those conditions, the FOXO protein in blue has gone into the nucleus -- that little compartment there in the middle of the cell -- and it's sitting down on a gene binding to it. You see one gene. There are lots of genes actually that bind on FOXO. And it's just sitting on one of them.

So FOXO turns on a lot of genes. And the genes it turns on includes antioxidant genes, genes I call carrot-giver genes, whose protein products actually help other proteins to function well -- to fold correctly and function correctly. And it can also escort them to the garbage cans of the cell and recycle them if they're damaged. DNA repair genes are more active in these animals. And the immune system is more active. And many of these different genes, we've shown, actually contribute to the long lifespan of the daf-2 mutant. So it's really interesting. These animals have within them the latent capacity to live much longer than they normally do. They have the ability to protect themselves from many kinds of damage,which we think makes them live longer.

So what about the normal worm? Well when the daf-2 receptor is active, then it triggers a series of eventsthat prevent FOXO from getting into the nucleus where the DNA is. So it can't turn the genes on.That's how it works. That's why we don't see the long lifespan, until we have the daf-2 mutant. But what good is this for the worm? Well we think that insulin and IGF-1 hormones are hormones that are particularly active under favorable conditions -- in the good times -- when food is plentiful and there's not a lot of stress in the environment. Then they promote the uptake of nutrients. You can store the food, use it for energy, grow, etc.

But what we think is that, under conditions of stress,the levels of these hormones drop -- for example, having limited food supply. And that, we think, is registered by the animal as a danger signal, a signal that things are not okay and that it should roll out its protective capacity. So it activates FOXO, FOXO goes to the DNA, and that triggers the expression of these genes that improves the ability of the cell to protect itself and repair itself. And that's why we think the animals live longer.

So you can think of FOXO as being like a building superintendent. So maybe he's a little bit lazy, but he's there, he's taking care of the building. But it's deteriorating. And then suddenly, he learns that there's going to be a hurricane. So he doesn't actually do anything himself. He gets on the telephone -- just like FOXO gets on the DNA -- and he calls up the roofer, the window person, the painter, the floor person. And they all come and they fortify the house. And then the hurricane comes through, and the house is in much better condition than it would normally have been in. And not only that, it can also just last longer, even if there isn't a hurricane. So that's the concept here for how we think this life extension ability exists.

Now the really cool thing about FOXO is that there are different forms of it. We all have FOXO genes,but we don't all have exactly the same form of the FOXO gene. Just like we all have eyes, but some of us have blue eyes and some of us have brown eyes.And there are certain forms of the FOXO gene that have found to be more frequently present in people who live to be 90 or 100. And that's the case all over the world, as you can see from these stars. And each one of these stars represents a population where scientists have asked, "Okay, are there differences in the type of FOXO genes among people who live a really long time?" and there are. We don't know the details of how this works, but we do know then that FOXO genes can impact the lifespan of people. And that means that, maybe if we tweak it a little bit, we can increase the health and longevity of people.

So this is really exciting to me. A FOXO is a protein that we found in these little, round worms to affect lifespan, and here it affects lifespan in people. So we've been trying in our lab now to develop drugsthat will activate this FOXO cell using human cells now in order to try and come up with drugs that will delay aging and age-related diseases. And I'm really optimistic that this is going to work.

There are lots of different proteins that are known to affect aging. And for at least one of them, there is a drug. There's one called TOR, which is another nutrient sensor, like the insulin pathway. And mutations that damage the TOR gene -- just like the daf-2 mutations -- extend lifespan in worms and flies and mice. But in this case, there's already a drug called rapamycin that binds to the TOR protein and inhibits its activity. And you can take rapamycin and give it to a mouse -- even when it's pretty old, like age 60 for a human, that old for a mouse -- if you give the mouse rapamycin, it will live longer.

Now I don't want you all to go out taking rapamycin. It is a drug for people, but the reason is it suppresses the immune system. So people take it to prevent organ transplants from being rejected. So this may not be the perfect drug for staying young longer. But still, here in the year 2011, there's a drug that you can give to mice at a pretty old age that will extend their lifespan, which comes out of this science that's been done in all these different animals.

So I'm really optimistic, and I think it won't be too long, I hope, before this age-old dream begins to come true.

Matt Ridley: Thank you, Cynthia. Let me get this straight. Although you're looking for a drug that can solve aging in old men like me, what you could do now pretty well in the lab, if you were allowed ethically, is start a human life from scratch with altered genes that would make it live for a lot longer?

CK: Ah, so the kinds of drugs I was talking aboutwould not change the genes, they would just bind to the protein itself and change its activity. So if you stop taking the drug, the protein would go back to normal.You could change the genes in principle. There isn't the technology to do that. But I don't think that's a good idea. And the reason is that these hormones,like the insulin and the IGF hormones and the TOR pathway, they're essential. If you knock them out completely, then you're very sick. So it might be that you would just have to fine tune it very carefully to get the benefits without getting any problems. And I think that's much better, that kind of control would be much better as a drug. And also, there are other ways of activating FOXO that don't even involve insulin or IGF-1 that might even be safer.

MR: I wasn't suggesting that I was going to go and do it, but ... (Laughter) There's a phenomenon which you have written about and spoken about, which is a negligible senescence. There are some creatures on this planet already that don't really do aging. Just move to one side for us, if you would.

CK: There are. There are some animals that don't seem to age. For example, there are some tortoises called Blanding's turtles. And they grow to be about this size. And they've been tagged, and they've been found to be 70 years old. And when you look at these 70 year-old turtles, you can't tell the difference, just by looking, between those turtles and 20 year-old turtles. And the 70 year-old ones, actually they're better at scouting out the good nesting places, and they also have more progeny every year. And there are other examples of these kinds of animals, like turns, certain kinds of birds are like this. And nobody knows if they really can live forever, or what keeps them from aging. It's not clear.

If you look at birds, which live a long time, cells from the birds tend to be more resistant to a lot of different environmental stresses like high temperature or hydrogen peroxide, things like that. And our long-lived mutants are too. They're more resistant to these kinds of stresses. So it could be that the pathways that I've been talking about, which are set to run really quickly in the worm, have a different normal set point in something like a bird, so that a bird can live a lot longer. And maybe they're even set really differently in animals with no senescence at all -- but we don't know.

MR: But what you're talking about here is not extending human lifespan by preventing death, so much as extending human youthspan.

CK: Yes, that's right. It's more like, say, if you were a dog. You notice that you're getting old, and you look at your human and you think, "Why isn't this human getting old?" They're not getting old in the dog's lifespan. It's more like that. But now we're the human looking out and imagining a different human.

Downloading — quite often stealing, in the eyes of the law — music, movies, books and photos is easier than bobbing for apples in a bucket without water. It has kept legions of lawyers employed fighting copyright violations without a whole lot to show for their efforts in the past decade. You think that was bad? Just wait until we can copy physical things.

It won’t be long before people have a 3-D printer sitting at home alongside its old inkjet counterpart. These 3-D printers, some already costing less than a computer did in 1999, can print objects by spraying layers of plastic, metal or ceramics into shapes. People can download plans for an object, hit print, and a few minutes later have it in their hands.

Call it the Industrial Revolution 2.0. Not only will it change the nature of manufacturing, but it will further challenge our concept of ownership and copyright. Suppose you covet a lovely new mug at a friend’s house. So you snap a few pictures of it. Software renders those photos into designs that you use to print copies of the mug on your home 3-D printer.

Did you break the law by doing this? You might think so, but surprisingly, you didn’t.

Life In A Day is a historic global experiment to create the world's largest user-generated feature film: a documentary, shot in a single day, by you.

Seth Godin susţine că internetul a determinat încetarea marketingul în masă şi a reînviat o unitate umană socială din trecutul îndepărtat: triburile.

Fondate pe idei şi valori comune,triburile dau oamenilor obişnuiţi puterea de a conduce şi de a infaptui marea schimbare.

El ne cere tuturor să ne asumam acest rol, cel al "sefului" de trib.

"Cateodata sunt invitat să vorbesc la întâlniri ciudate. Am fost invitat să vorbesc pentru oameni care se îmbracă în costume mari de animale împăiate pentru a interpreta la evenimentele sportive. Din păcate, nu m-am putut duce. Dar m-a făcut să mă gândesc la faptul că aceşti tipi, cel puţin majoritatea lor, ştiu ce fac pentru a-şi câştiga existenţa.

Ei se costumează în animale împăiate şi distrează oamenii la evenimentele sportive.

La scurt timp am fost invitat să vorbesc la o convenţie a oamenilor care fac animale din baloane. Şi din nou nu m-am putut duce. Dar este un grup fascinant. Fac animale din baloane.

Există o mare schismă între cei care fac animale cu temă biblică şi cei care fac animale porno. (Râsete) Dar fac multe lucruri interesante cu baloanele. Câteodată dau de necaz, dar nu prea des.
Şi un alt lucru despre oamenii aceştia este că şi ei ştiu ce fac pentru a-şi câştiga existenţa.

Ei fac animale din baloane.

Dar noi ce facem pentru a ne câştiga existenţa? Ce fac cu exactitate în fiecare zi oamenii care se uită la acest film?

Vreau să argumentez aici că ceea ce facem este încercarea de a schimba totul.

Încercăm să găsim o bucăţică din status quo, ceva care ne deranjează, ceva ce trebuie îmbunătăţit, ceva ce "striga" pentru a fi schimbat, şi îl schimbăm.

Încercăm să facem o schimbare mare, permanentă şi importantă.

Dar nu gândim în felul acesta. Şi nici nu ne-am petrecut mult timp discutand detaliile acelui proces.
Eu l-am studiat vreme de câţiva ani si vreau să vă împărtăşesc câteva poveşti astăzi.

Prima, despre un tip numit Nathan Winograd. Nathan era numărul doi la SPCA (Societatea de Prevenire a Cruzimii fata de Animale) San Francisco. Şi faptul pe care poate nu îl cunoasteti poate despre istoria SPCA este că a fost infiintata cu scopul de a omorî câini şi pisici. Oraşele îi eliberau o autorizaţie pentru a le scapa de animalele fără stăpân de pe străzi, omorandu-le.

Într-un an obişnuit, patru milioane de câini şi pisici erau omorâte. Multe dintre ele, în primele 24 de ore după ce erau ridicate de pe stradă.

Nathan şi şeful lui vedeau asta si nu puteau tolera lucrul acesta. Aşa că au pornit să facă San Francisco un oraş unde nu se omoară animale fără stăpân. Să creeze un oraş întreg unde fiecare câine şi pisică, dacă nu erau bolnavi sau periculoşi, să fie adoptaţi, nu omorâţi.

Toată lumea a spus că era imposibil.

Nathan şi şeful lui s-au dus la consiliul local pentru a schimba ordonanţa. Şi oameni de la SPCA şi adăposturile de animale din toată ţara au zburat la San Francisco pentru a depune mărturie împotriva lor. Pentru a spune că ar dăuna mişcării şi că era inuman.
Au insistat. Nathan a mers direct la comunitate. A contactat oamenii cărora le păsa despre asta. Amatori, oameni cu pasiune. Şi în doar câţiva ani, San Francisco a ajuns primul oraş unde nu se omoară animale. Fară niciun deficit. Totul fiind suportat de comunitate.

Nathan a plecat şi s-a dus în ţinutul Tompkins, statul New York. Un loc atât de diferit de San Francisco pe cât este posibil în Statele Unite. Şi a făcut-o din nou. A ajuns ca dintr-un hingher glorificat să transforme complet comunitatea. Apoi a plecat în Carolina de Nord şi a făcut-o din nou. Şi a plecat în Reno. Şi a făcut-o din nou.

Când mă gândesc la ce a făcut Nathan, şi mă gândesc la ce fac oamenii de aici, mă gândesc la idei. Mă gândesc că procesul de a crea o idee, de a răspândi o idee are multe în spatele lui.

Nu ştiu dacă aţi fost la o nuntă evreiască. Dar acolo, evreii iau un bec şi îl distrug.

Sunt multe motive şi poveşti în jurul acestui obicei. Dar un motiv este că distrugerea becului indică o schimbare, de la starea dinainte la starea de după. Este un moment în timp.

Vreau să afirm că noi trăim momentul cheie al unei schimbări în felul în care ideile sunt create, răspândite şi implementate.

Am pornit cu ideea fabricii.

Aceea că poţi schimba lumea întreagă dacă ai o fabrică eficientă care să producă schimbare.

Am continuat cu ideea televiziunii.

Ea afirma că dacă am avea un megafon suficient de mare, dacă am putea apărea la TV de suficiente ori, dacă am putea cumpăra suficiente reclame, am putea câştiga.

Iar acum suntem în acest model al leadership-ului. Unde felul în care facem schimbări nu are legătură cu folosirea banilor, sau cu puterea de a pune în mişcare un sistem, ci prin modul in care conducem.

Aşa că haideţi să vă povestesc despre aceste trei cicluri.

Primul este ciclul fabricii.
Henry Ford vine cu o idee foarte tare. Aceasta îi permite lui să angajeze bărbaţi care erau obişnuiţi să fie plătiţi cu 50 cenţi pe zi şi să le ofere 5 dolari pe zi. Deoarece avea o fabrică suficient de eficientă.

Cu acest tip de avantaj poţi produce o mulţime de maşini. Poţi face multe schimbări. Poţi să faci să se construiască străzi. Poţi schimba infrastructura unei ţări întregi. Esenţa a ceea ce faci constă în forţă de muncă din ce în ce mai ieftină şi utilaje din ce în ce mai rapide.

Problema de care ne-am lovit este că sunt pe terminate ambele. Forţa de muncă tot mai ieftină şi utilajele tot mai rapide. (Râsete)

Aşa că schimbăm viteza pentru un moment, şi spunem, "Ştiu. Televiziunea. Publicitatea.

Presează, presează. Ia o idee bună şi dă-i drumul în lumea largă. Am o cursă de şoareci mai bună.

Şi dacă pot lua suficienţi bani pentru a spune asta oamenilor, voi vinde suficient."

Şi poţi construi o întreagă industrie pe asta.

Dacă este necesar poţi pune bebeluşi în reclame.
Dacă este necesar poţi folosi bebeluşi pentru a vinde şi alte lucruri.

Dacă treaba cu bebeluşii nu mai merge, poţi folosi doctori. Dar aveţi grijă. Pentru că nu vreţi să aveţi o alăturare nefericită. când vorbiţi despre un lucru în loc de celălalt. (Râsete)

Modelul necesită ca voi să vă purtaţi ca regele. Ca persoana din faţă, care aruncă lucruri pionilor din spate. Voi deţineţi controlul. Şi veţi spune oamenilor ce să facă în continuare.

Diagrama rapidă arată că sunteţi aici sus. Şi că împingeţi ideea spre lume. Această metodă, marketingul de masă, are nevoie de idei mediocre pentru că ţinta sunt masele, şi de foarte multe reclame.

Ce am făcut ca spammeri a fost să hipnotizăm pe toată lumea să cumpere ideea noastră.

Să hipnotizăm pe toată lumea pentru a dona pentru cauza noastră.

Să hipnotizăm toată lumea pentru a vota candidatul nostru.

Şi, din păcate, nici asta nu mai merge aşa de bine ca pe vremuri. (Râsete)

Dar veştile bune sunt aproape, veşti foarte bune.

Eu o numesc ideea triburilor.

Triburile sunt un concept extrem de simplu care datează de 50 de mii de ani. Este vorba despre a conduce şi a conecta oameni şi idei. Şi este ceva ce oamenii şi-au dorit dintotdeauna.

Mulţi oameni obişnuiesc să aibă un trib spiritual, sau un trib al bisericii, să aibă un trib la muncă, un trib de comunitate. Dar acum, mulţumită internetului şi a exploziei mass media şi a multor altor lucruri care se strecoară prin societatea noastră în toată lumea, triburile sunt peste tot.

Internetul trebuia să ne omogenizeze, conectându-ne pe toţi. În schimb, a permis formarea bisericuţelor.

Deci avem doamnele cu pălării roşi aici. Triatloniştii cu pălării roşii în partea cealaltă. Ai armatele organizate dincolo. Şi rebelii dezorganizaţi în altă parte.

Avem oamenii cu pălării albe care fac de mâncare. Şi oamenii cu pălării albe care navighează pe mare. Ideea este că poţi găsi dansatori populari ucrainieni.

Şi te poţi conecta cu ei.

Fiindcă vrei să fi conectat.

Oamenii marginalizaţi se pot găsi unul pe altul, se pot conecta şi pot merge undeva.

Toate oraşele care au o staţie de pompieri voluntari înţeleg acest mod de gândire. (Râsete)

Acum se vede că aceasta este o poză reală nemodificată. Oameni pe care îi cunosc şi sunt pompieri mi-au spus că nu e ceva neobişnuit. Şi că ceea ce fac uneori pompierii pentru a se antrena este să ia o casă care va fi dărâmată, să o incendieze şi să se antreneze pentru a stinge focul.
Dar întotdeauna se opresc şi fac o poză. (Râsete)

Ştiţi că tribul piraţilor este unul fascinant. Ei au propriul steag. Au petecele de ochi. Poţi întotdeauna recunoaşte când te întâlneşti cu cineva aparţinând unui trib.

Şi se pare că triburile, nu banii, nu fabricile, pot schimba lumea noastră, pot schimba politica, pot alinia un număr mare de oameni. Nu pentru că îi forţezi să facă ceva împotriva voinţei lor.

Ci pentru că ei vor să se conecteze.

Asta e ceea ce cred că facem pentru a ne câştiga existenţa acum, toţi dintre noi, găsim ceva care să merite schimbat, şi apoi construim triburi care construiesc triburi care răspândesc idea pentru a o raspandi la randul lor. Şi se transformă în ceva mai mare decât noi. Se transformă într-o mişcare.

Când Al Gore a pornit să schimbe lumea din nou, nu a făcut-o singur. Nu a făcut cumpărând multe reclame. A făcut-o creând o mişcare. Mii de oameni din toată ţara care ar putea ţine prezentarea în locul lui. Pentru că el nu poate fi în 100, 200 sau 500 de oraşe în fiecare noapte.

Nu ai nevoie de toată lumea. Kevin Kelley ne-a învăţat că ai nevoie doar de o mie de fani adevăraţi poate. O mie de oameni cărora să le pese suficient încât să te ducă în runda următoare şi în runda următoare şi în runda următoare.

Asta înseamnă că ideea pe care o creezi, produsul pe care îl creezi, mişcarea pe care o creezi, nu este pentru toată lumea. Nu este un lucru de masă. Nu despre asta e vorba aici. Ci este vorba despre a găsi oameni care să creadă cu adevărat. Este uşor să vă uitaţi la ceea ce am spus până acum, şi să spuneţi, „Stai puţin, eu nu am ceea ce mi-ar trebui să fiu genul acela de lider."

Iată doi lideri. Nu au multe în comun. Au cam aceeaşi vârstă. Dar asta e tot. Ceea ce au făcut totuşi, fiecare în felul lui, a fost să creeze un mod diferit de a naviga prin tehnologie. Unii oameni îi vor aduce pe alţii într-o echipă. Alţii îi vor face pe oameni să intre în cealaltă echipă.

De asemenea te informează asupra deciziilor pe care le iei când construieşti produse sau servicii. Acesta este unul din dispozitivele mele favorite. Dar este păcat că nu este organizat pentru a ajuta autorii să creeze mişcări. Ce s-ar întâmpla dacă atunci când ai folosi Kindle-ul tău ai putea vedea comentariile şi citatele şi notele tuturor oamenilor care citesc aceeaşi carte ca tine în acel moment.
Sau din grupul tău de lectură. Sau dintre prietenii tăi, sau din ce cerc vrei tu.

Ce s-ar întâmpla dacă autorii, sau oamenii cu idei ar putea folosi versiunea doi, care apare luni. Să o folosească pentru a organiza oamenii care ar vrea să vorbească despre ceva. Sunt un milion de lucruri pe care le-aş putea împărtăşi cu voi în legătură cu mecanica din spate. Dar haideţi să încerc doar câteva.

Beatles nu au inventat adolescenţii. Au vrut doar să-i conducă. Majoritatea mişcărilor, mare parte din leadershipul pe care îl facem înseamnă să găsim un grup care e deconectat dar care are deja o dorinţă. Nu să convingi oamenii să vrea ceva ce nu au încă.

Atunci când Diane Hatz a lucrat la The Meatrix, clipul ei--care s-a răspândit peste tot pe internet-- despre felul în care sunt tratate animalele la ferme nu a însemnat că ea a inventat ideea de a fi vegan. Nu a inventat ideea de a îţi păsa de această problemă.

Dar a ajutat ca oamenii să se organizeze, şi a ajutat ca asta să se transforme într-o mişcare.

Hugo Chavez nu a inventat nemulţumitele clase de jos şi de mijloc din Venezuela. Doar le-a condus.

Bob Marley nu a inventat rastafarienii. Doar a făcut un pas în faţă şi a zis: „Urmaţi-mă”

Derek Sivers a inventat CD Baby. Ceea ce a permis muzicienilor independenţi să aibă un loc unde să-şi vândă muzica fără a deveni comerciali. Să aibă un loc pentru a-şi îndeplini misiunea pe care deja şi-o asumaseră şi să se conecteze unii cu alţii.

Tot ceea ce au aceşti oameni în comun este că sunt eretici. Ereticii se uită la status quo şi spun: aşa n-o să meargă. Nu mă pot adapta acestui status quo. Sunt gata să iau poziţie, să fiu luat în seamă şi să pun lucrurile în mişcare. Ştiu care e status quo-ul. Şi nu îmi place.

Asta în loc să mă uit la toate micile reguli şi să le urmez pe fiecare, asta în loc de a urma turma, cineva care e pe jumătate adormit, urmând instrucţiuni, ţinând capul în jos, pierzându-se în mulţime, din când în când cineva se ridică şi spune: "Nu eu."

Cineva se ridică şi spune: „Acest lucru e important."

Trebuie să ne organizăm ca să-l facem.” Şi nu toată lumea va face asta. Dar nu ai nevoie de toată lumea.
Ai nevoie doar de câţiva oameni (Râsete) care se vor uita la reguli, vor realiza că nu au niciun sens, vor realiza cât de mult vor să fie de conectaţi.

Deci Tony Shea nu conduce un magazin de încălţăminte. Zappos nu este un magazin de încălţăminte. Zappos este unicul, singurul, cel mai bun loc din câte au existat pentru oamenii care iubesc pantofii, pentru ca ei să se găsească, să vorbească despre pasiunea lor, să se conecteze cu oameni cărora le pasă mai mult de deservirea clienţilor decât de a face un bănuţ mâine.

Poate fi ceva la fel de prozaic ca şi pantofii.

Şi ceva la fel de complicat ca răsturnarea unui guvern.

Dar este vorba despre acelaşi comportament.

Ceea ce este nevoie, cum a descoperit Geraldine Carter, este să fii capabil să spui: „Nu pot face asta de unul singur. Dar dacă mai găsesc oameni să mi se alăture în ascensiune atunci împreună putem obţine ceea ce vrem cu toţii. Doar aşteptăm pe cineva să ne conducă.

Michelle Kaufman a introdus noi moduri de gândire în legătură cu arhitectura ambientală. Nu o face construind în linişte casă după casă. O face spunând o poveste oamenilor care vor să o asculte. Conectând un trib de oameni care sunt disperaţi să se conecteze unii cu alţii. Conducând o mişcare. Făcând o schimbare. Şi încă o dată, şi încă o dată.

V-aş putea aşadar oferi trei întrebări.

Prima este: pe cine mai exact supăraţi voi?

Pentru că dacă nu supăraţi pe nimeni, nu schimbaţi nici status quo-ul.

A doua întrebare este: Pe cine conectaţi voi?

Deoarece în cazul multor oameni, asta este ceea ce îi interesează. Conexiunile care se creează, de la unul la altul.

Şi a treia întrebare: pe cine conduceţi voi?

Deoarece concentrându-vă pe această parte, nu pe construcţia în sine, ci pe cine construieşte, această parte, cea care conduce,...

...poate aduce schimbarea.

Blake, de la Tom's Shoes, a avut o idee foarte simplă.

„Ce s-ar întâmpla dacă de fiecare dată când cineva ar cumpăra o pereche din aceşti pantofi Aş da o pereche din exact acelaşi model cuiva care nici măcar nu are pantofi?”

Aceasta nu este o poveste despre cum să obţii spaţiu pe raft la Neiman Marcus. Este o poveste despre un produs care spune o poveste. Şi în timp ce te plimbi cu această pereche remarcabilă de pantofi şi cineva spune „Ce sunt aceştia?” Vei spune povestea în numele lui Blake, şi în numele oamenilor care au primit pantofi.

Şi brusc nu mai este o pereche de pantofi sau 100 de perechi de pantofi. Sunt zeci de mii de perechi de pantofi.

Prietenul meu Red Maxwell a petrecut ultimii 10 ani luptându-se împotriva diabetului juvenil.

Nu luptând cu organizaţiile care luptă împotriva diabetului, ci luptând împreună cu ei, conducându-i conectându-i, punând la îndoială status quo-ul.

Pentru că asta este important pentru el.

Şi oamenii cu care se înconjoară au nevoie să se conecteze. Ei au nevoie să fie conduşi. Asta face diferenţa.

Nu ai nevoie de permisiune din partea oamenilor pentru a-i conduce. Dar în cazul în care aveţi nevoie, iat-o. Ei aşteaptă, noi aşteptăm ca tu să ne arăţi unde să mergem mai departe. Aşa că iată ce au liderii în comun.

Primul lucru este că ei pun la îndoială status quo-ul. Pun la îndoială ceea ce există deja.

Al doilea lucru este că ei construiesc o cultură. Un limbaj secret, o strângere de mână de şapte secunde. Un mod de a şti dacă eşti cu ei sau nu eşti cu ei.

Ei dau dovadă de curiozitate. Curiozitate despre oamenii din trib. Curiozitate despre cei din afara tribului. Ei pun întrebări. Ei conectează oamenii unii cu alţii. Ştiţi ce vor oamenii mai mult ca orice?

Ei vor să le fie simţită lipsa. Cineva să le simtă lipsa în ziua în care nu apar. Să le fie simţită lipsa când sunt plecaţi. Şi liderii triburilor pot face asta. Este fascinant deoarece toţi liderii triburilor au carismă.

Dar nu ai nevoie de carismă pentru a ajunge lider. Faptul că eşti un lider îţi dă carismă. Dacă vă uitaţi şi studiaţi liderii care au succes, de aici vine carisma, din faptul că sunt lideri. În final, ei sunt dedicaţi. Sunt dedicaţi cauzei. Sunt dedicaţi tribului. Sunt dedicaţi oamenilor care sunt acolo.

Aş vrea să faceţi ceva pentru mine. Şi aş vrea să vă gândiţi înainte de a refuza ideea. Ceea ce vreau să faceţi ia doar 24 de ore şi este să creaţi o mișcare. Ceva ce contează. Porniţi sa o faceti. Avem nevoie de ea. Mulțumesc mult. Apreciez." (Aplauze)

Cea mai inspirata campanie din ultima perioada;... absolut incredibil cata emotie poate genera. Cel mai surprinzator insa mi s-a parut sinceritatea dezarmanta a liniei prin care operatorul telecom inchide. Reflectia la timpul care ne este dat pentru a vorbi contine un adevar profund care descrie un fenomen ce pare ca domina paternul de comportamment social in societatea contemporana.

Un fenomen care in opinia mea a luat amploare la scara globala odata cu popularizarea retelelor de socializare. Avem atat de mult timp pentru a vorbi, incat gasim din ce in ce mai putin loc in agenda zilnica pentru a si asculta ceea ce au altii de spus.

Pare ca fiecare isi impartaseste opinia personala cu incapatanare constanta, fara a realiza absenta dialogului real din tot acest murmur ce devine un zgomot de fond si totodata sursa de poluare, fond pe care mintea noastra continua, mai inversunata parca, acelasi act cu care vesnic ne-a distras de la tot ceea ce conteaza.

Prea putini sunt cei ce par a constientiza in tot acest murmur lipsa acelui dialog in care ambele parti participa activ, lasand celuilalt spatiu egal de desfasurare ... ;)

Ma uit zilnic in jur si tot ce vad sunt ceilalti vorbind intr-una, atentia fiecaruia abia atingand circumferinta propriei sale minti, absenti si parca incapabili a observa faptul ca nimeni nu asculta cu adevarat pe nimeni, timp in care toti vorbesc.

Cu siguranta este doar perceptia mea personala, dar ma lovesc zilnic de acest patern cu o frecventa a carei singura constanta e ingrijoratoarea rata cu care se repeta...

Un clasic in viata:), si totodata un foarte drag amic, reusind sa inlature reflexul instinctiv de a opune rezistenta constrangerilor de orice natura, mi-a evidentiat pentru prima data un adevar pe cat de simplu in brutala sa forma, pe atat de profund in intelegerea evidenta unei minti detasata de emotie.

Doar trei cuvinte in care cred ca va rezona vesnic emotia primelor sentimante de revolta traite de toti cei carora le-au fost adresate : TACI SI ASCULTA !! ;))

Explicatia sa e pe cat de simpla, pe atat de adevarata: atunci cand asculti, ai sansa de a invata ceva nou de fiecare data; cand vorbesti esti constrans la ceea ce stiai deja.

Personal, cred ca are perfecta dreptate. Tu ce crezi?

Pentru ca nu mi-asi permite niciodata sa-ti spun cand sa TACI, iti voi spune in schimb ...

'You've got to find what you love' - Steve Jobs

One of the greatest speeches I have ever heard was the address Steve Jobs delivered at Stanford University's 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.

Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life's setbacks - including death itself.

This is the text he prepared for that event, as it is recorded on Stanford University's page on its Report from June 14, 2005.

'' I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.

Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.

It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography.

If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.
And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.

We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired.

How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.

I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.

In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right."

It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:
"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.

My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.

I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.

On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words:

I have decided to write this post and give away the 150 Google+ invites left on my account, mainly because I've always been a loyal Google user, an admirer of their business approach and also of their vision, not to mention the enthusiasm I have adopted their new social service, Google+.

Trusting with you one little secret, for the first time in a very long one, I have asked a (almost) complete stranger for anything to use my own benefit. Being completely honest to the end now:), it was one of the toughest things I have done lately, considering my big ego that I am really not proud a bit of, but had to cross in doing that.

Being in the position to ask James Gardner which is a very nice guy I am following on Twitter, for a Google+ invite, the very first time I was actually small chatting him, made me realize the value I was giving to this new social service, before even any kind of trial.

Now that I am a more than satisfied adopter, and a big fan of Google+, I have almost forgotten how bad I've wanted my early invite back than, and also considered for the first time that might be more people like myself to wanna be a part, but still afraid or ashamed to ask for an invite.

One of those few but strong principles I am entrusting my life to be lead on it's own path, says to always give back if too late to pay forward...

In this last video interview before his untimely death, Terence McKenna describes Novelty Theory to director John Hazard with an elaboration of its core principles involving hyper-complexification and the compression of Time.

He holds forth on the correspondences between the structure of the DNA molecule and the Chinese I-Ching, then shows how his notion of an Archaic Revival leads from the theories of mind and the art movements of the early 20th century to the Shaman as the quintessential figure of the 21st century, with psychedelic substances being the bridge between these worldviews.

By way of explaining why he's finally releasing this footage, Director John Hazard has the following to say:

"On meeting Terence: I had just finished shooting a film which profiled George Wallace for American Experience, and I was looking for a subject for a film that I might make that would engage me in a compelling way. I stumbled upon Terence and Novelty Theory, and I liked the correspondences between his work and the Mayan calendar.

Terence agreed to work with me, and I went to his home on the Big Island of Hawaii to conduct what I assumed would be the first of several interviews. We were just beginning to work together when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

I’ve always believed that my interview with Terence worked especially well as a long form conversation, because of his gifted way with language. When Jeremy Narby began his 'Awakening the Cosmic Serpent' Evolver Intensives sessions, I was struck by how engaging his long form interviews were, and I noticed how week after week his guests would tell a story about Terence. I’m inspired to release this interview on Reality Sandwich within the context of Jeremy’s Evolver Intensives.

With the psychedelic movement undergoing a renaissance, many in the new generation, the core participants who are finding their way to the Evolver/RS nexus, were children when Terence conducted his interview with me. I think this audience may consider his remarks to be prescient."

There are still two main areas that needs a complete makeover before we can actually comprehend the true potential dwelling within the the old net's nodes.

A wise man once said "the opportunity meets the prepared mind", and no matter hard I've tried finding a valid argument to disagree, all I could do was facing the obvious.

Since the first recorded events up till today, we’ve raised an astonishing amount of data, we have designed
mathematical models based on repeated occurrence of seemingly unrelated events, we have designed complex algorithms on beautiful symmetries, we’ve put together all of these and made science: statistics, sociology, etc.

We have even built computers to help us read tomorrow within the numbers of today, and yet, with all this data now in reach, with all the models, the tables and all the algorithms, we fail so often to predict what lies ahead.

In my opinion, there is a good reason for all that: we lack our minds being prepared, so we choose waiting for opportunities, guessing what others are working on so we can feast on crumbles, instead of doing each one's own bit of work so we can all met the greatest opportunity of all. That of becoming ONE.

Think of Internet as one single machine with billions reconfigurable processing and data storing units hyperlinked in a much more efficient network architecture serving all mankind at once.

Parallel programming that now makes possible the use of multicore processors by efficient task management has opened a new and unprecedented direction for the net to evolve towards.

The later explosion in mobile usage and the availability of wireless broadband connectivity at ever lower costs are the two main factors, which determined a stringent urge to rethink from scratch the way things are done.

The first one is wireless broadband connectivity, which is a hot area of interests these days. A very big slice of the radio bandwidth we can access today is licensed and shared in between media broadcasting networks and telecommunication companies.

What major league players would have all the financial, material but most important human resources, statistical global data access and usage patterns as well as the inside know-how on all new emerging technologies and research directions? From the top of my head, I would say that if not all, at least a good majority have all these.

Based on some minor hints as that of holding the search engine poll position for decade now, more than a good slice of e-mail service market, almost half of video sharing markets in US, major developer and researcher in almost every new emerging technologies as adaptative AI agents, semantic indexing algorithms, natural spoken language systems, not to speak about the most rapidly expanding social network of all, first to use html5’s capabilities, a player that expanded his area of influences horizontally launching service after service on distinct branding as to protect all others from one’s failure on a SCRUM developing methodology that employs not only rapid service deployment but also uses the most valuable resource possible that is real user’s feedback on real time adjustments...let me hold my breath...I would say ... not quite.

My money as my hearth would go on this on a brand new and probable European based and funded start up, created with this development’s exact scope but whose founders just glided low under the radar, for the last year or so, just waiting for the right moment to write their page of history.

Long live the World Wide Web of People, Agents and Devices alike, towards the emerging real one collective planetary intelligence, to assist the real one thus not so new, but brighter and evolving organism that the entire humanity represents.
