My daughters did not belief me at first but then, they got excited, and wanted to know more of Swami Vivekananda's likes and dislikes. I have to admit that I was also excited and wanted to know more of the human side of Swami Vivekananda. Therefore 'Swami Vivekananda: Human and Divine' by Sister Gargi became our reading just before we go to bed........Below are a little from the book;

There are many incidents in Swamiji's life in which he seems indeed to have been human in the sense that we are human. For instance, he could grow thunderously angry, furiously impatient; he could be deeply personal in his love, establishing a closer relationship with some than with others; he could be keenly hurt by betrayal and grieved by the loss of someone close to him; he could laugh uproariously and be extremely witty; he could be disconcertingly changeable, altering his plans at a moments notice; he had decided likes and dislikes - he had a great fondness for chocolate ice-cream and Tabasco Sauce, (presumably not together) and he dislikes guavas. Those are a few of the traits in Swamiji that seem human to us and that we find so endearing- and sometimes heartbreaking.

The above are some of the interesting notes about Swamiji, however you have to read the entire passage to experience the joy and really understand the Humanity and Divinity in HIM.

Happy reading.

LOVELY NURSHING HOME

Yesterday was a memorable day. My family paid a visit to the Lovely Nursing Home in PJ. We reached there at about 12.10pm. As soon as we reached, we were greeted by few of the residents in the Home. My children shyly shook hands with them. My nephews were a little uncertain on how to react, this is their first time coming to such a home. After we have exchanged greetings, we started to serve lunch. We arranged the lunch and the menu was Egg Kurma, Cabbage stir fry, Long Beans stir fry, Soya Taufu Sambal and Pampadam. My daughters insisted to serve, so I and my hubby had to assist them and many of the elders said Nandri Amma, a gesture to show their appreciation means Thank you Mother. I had to hold back my tears………..

Lovely Nursing Home house about 60 of them, and 10 of them are children. They are elders who are disable and had to use the wheel chair and some are just too old to be bothered with what was happening around them, many have to be fed as they are unable to care for themselves. Out of the 10 children only 2 are schooling as the balance does not have their birth certificate. These children are taught by the tutors that come to the home. There are 5 helpers in the home to take of this resident.

We left for home after about 1 hour. My children had many questions on why are they at the home, where are there parents of these children and etc…….. on our way back. I tried my level best to answer their curiosity.
I went home hoping my children will never forget this day knowing that there are people out there lack of love and other necessities in their live and will grow up appreciating what they have and learn to give more rather than ask. As for me, I remembered Swami Vivekananda’s quote, This is the gist of all worship – to be pure and to do good to others. He who sees Siva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Siva; and if he see Siva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary.

Below are some pictures at the home. My daughter is in the third picture...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SvN-z7bgCsI/AAAAAAAAAUk/mLsK6HXhF_M/s200/Lovely+Nurshing+Home+4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400799808738822850" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SvN-zjG6nfI/AAAAAAAAAUc/8GSCsXeLuPI/s200/Lovely+Nurshing+Home+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400799802210033138" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SvN-zD9XjbI/AAAAAAAAAUU/mHu1eJWW1dk/s200/Lovely+Nurshing+Home+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400799793848487346" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SvN-yVgON2I/AAAAAAAAAUM/wwCQIk4yEgQ/s200/Lovely+Nurshing+Home+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400799781378209634" />

TAMIL NEW YEAR....SO WHAT IS NEW??

Tamil New Year is on Tuesday next week. So what have you planned? Many would have planned to visit the temple, present new clothes and cooking a vegetarian meal comprising of 13 or maybe 15 dishes and etc. Why not for this year, plan to visit the less fortunate people than you……Who??
- orphanage homes
- old folks home
- down syndrome or also known as special children’s home
- home for the handicapped

You can get your family, sisters, brothers or friends or working colleagues to join and plan this visit. You can
- prepare/cater a meal and spend some time with them
- give them books/toys and etc
- present them clothes
- and other special event with them
and the list can go on, depending on your budget......I mean you need not spend a fortune but it is what you are willing to do that is important...

End of the day, I am sure you’ll feel more satisfied and happy spending a day with them. After all there’s no better way to start your new year felling more blessed.

Ghandiji have said 'I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless myself, I won't presume to probe into the faults of others.'
Leadership means getting along with people.' There is pretty much always something good in people. And things that may not be so good. But you can choose what things to focus on.
And when you see the good in people it becomes easier to motivate yourself to be of service to them. By being of service to other people, by giving them value you not only make their lives better. Over time you tend to get what you give. So you, create an upward spiral of positive change that grows and becomes stronger.

GOD's POEM

Continue.....

Of all the forces that have worked and are still working to mould the destinies of the human race, none, certainly, is more potent than that the manifestation of which we call religion.

The exact definition of the Sanskrit word Rishi is a seer of Mantras – of the thoughts conveyed in the Vedic hymns.

Man is man, so long as he is strolling to rise above Nature, and this Nature is both internal and external.

The mainspring of the strength of every race lies in its spirituality and the death of that race begins the day that spirituality wanes and materialism gains ground.

Truth does not pay homage to any society, ancient or modern. Society has to pay homage to Truth, or die.

In Buddha we had the great, universal heart, and infinite patience making religion practical and bringing it to everyone’s door. In Sankaracharya we saw tremendous intellectual power throwing the scorching light of reason upon everything. We want today that bright sun of intellectuality joined with the heart of Buddha, the wonderful infinite heart of love and mercy. This union will give us the highest philosophy. Science and religion will meet and shake hands. Poetry and philosophy will become friends. This will be the religion of the future, and if we can work it out, we may be sure that it will be for all times and peoples.

Who enjoys the pictures, the seller or the seer? The seller is busy with his accounts, computing what his gain will be, how much profit he will realize on the picture. His brain is full of that. He is looking at the hammer and watching the bids. He is intent on hearing how fast the bids are rising. That man is enjoying the picture, who has gone there without any intention of buying or selling. He looks at the picture and enjoys it.

I never read of any more beautiful conception of God than the following: ‘He is the Great Poet, the Ancient Poet; the whole universe is His Poem, coming in verses and rhymes and rhythms, written in infinite bliss.’

I have been asked many times, ‘Why do you use that old word, God?’ Because it is the best word for our purpose; you cannot find a better word than that, because all the hopes, aspirations and happiness of humanity have been centered in that word. It is impossible now to change the word.

Man according to the Vedanta philosophy is the greatest being that is in the universe and this world of work the best place in it, because only herein is the greatest and the best chance for him to become perfect. Angels or gods, whatever you may call them, have all to become men, if they want to become perfect. This is the great centre, the wonderful opportunity – this human life.

The doctrine which stands out luminously in every page of the Gita is intense activity, but in the midst of it, eternal calmness.

The Vedanta teaches men to have faith in themselves first. The Vedanta says, a man who does not believe in himself is an atheist. Not believing in the glory of our own soul is what the Vedanta calls atheism…..It recognizes no sin, it only recognizes error; and the greatest error, says the Vedanta is to say that you are weak, that you have no power, and you cannot do this and that.

If faith in ourselves had been more extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a very large portion of the evils and miseries that we have would have vanished. Throughout the history of mankind, if any motive power has been more potent than another in the lives of all great men and women, it is that of faith in themselves.

The old religions said that he was an atheist who did not believe in God. The new religion says that he is the atheist who does not believe in himself.

Feel like Christ and you will be a Christ; feel like Buddha and you will be a Buddha. I accept all religions that were in the past and worship with them all. I worship God with every one of them in whatever form they worship Him. I shall go to the mosque of the Mohammedan; I shall enter the Christian’s church and kneel before the crucifix; I shall enter the Buddhistic temple, where I shall take refuge in Buddha and in his law. I shall go to the forest and sit down in meditation with the Hindu, who is trying to see the light which enlightens the heart of everyone. Not only shall I do all these, but I shall keep my heart open for all that may come in the future. Is God’s book finished? Or is it still a continuous revelation, going on? It is a marvelous book – these spiritual revelations of the world. The Bible, the Vedas, the Koran and all other sacred books are but so many pages, and an infinite number of pages remain yet to be unfolded.

What is my plan? In the first place I would ask mankind to recognize this maxim – ‘Do not destroy.’ Iconoclastic reformers do no good to the world. Break not, pull not anything down, but build Help, if you can; if you cannot, fold your hands and stand by and see things go on. Do not injure, if you cannot render help. Say not a word against any man’s convictions so far as they are sincere. Secondly, take man where he stands and from there give him a lift.

Do you think you can teach even a child? You cannot. The child teaches himself. Your duty is to afford opportunities and to remove obstacles.

Swami Vivekananda

The above is the last portion of the God's Poem by Swami Vivekananda. Like me, I hope you'll find the answers to the questions that you have had all this while in your heart. I have found some of the answers and am still in search for the rest....I pray that, I not only find the answers, but also realize and practice them in my daily life.

ADJUSTING

Greetings to all,
I have not been posting for some time and it is the usual reason......HAVE BEEN BUSY.... I have been trying to adjust to the new changes and challenges in 2009 and feel so guilty, every time, I think about this blog....

To succeed you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will.
'I will drink the ocean' says perserving soul, 'at my will mountains will crumble up'.Have that sort of energy, that sort of will; work hard, and you will reach the goal.

Swami Vivekananda preached this......This is what I keep on reminding myself. The school and the kindergarten is about 25 minutes drive apart. I was extremely weary and worn out by 1pm with all the running around, but was extremely satisfied and thrilled like my daughters. I also got an opportunity to see and witness dramas by some of the pupils, parents and teacher……. Some parents can really be a pain and I salute the teachers that are so patient.

Hubby is a teacher, so it was also first day schooling for him and he missed all the fun seeing our kid….

Yesterday was their second day in school and Kindergarten.

I kissed them good bye in the morning, as I was rushing to go to work, and they were still sound asleep. I reminded all that needs to be done for the children before they are off to school to my helper for the 100th time before starting the car engine. She asked me not to worry and assured all will be taken care. Such an angle…. I have trust on her and solely dependent on her now. I thank God, for sending such a wonderful and reliable person to help me out.

I called both of them at different time, after I reach office, as the school starts at 7.10 am for my first daughter and the Kindergarten starts at 8.15am for my second daughter. I called them again in the afternoon after they came back from school, again at two different times. Just to ensure they are ok and all went well.

By the time, I reached home, in the evening; they have had their dinner and were resting. Both the sisters looked tired and were kind of drifting to sleep.
When I came to see them after my prayers, both of them were already sound asleep… No night hug, no good night kiss and no bedtime stories and no update about the happening in the new school or about their new friends and teachers and etc…………… I had to hold my tears back hearing all the updates from my helper, as the children have updated her as soon as they came back home…………………

I guess this is the price I had to pay for being a working mom!!!!!! Oh! how I envy those moms that does not work…. I am not sure if I am being too emotional or if all working moms feels the same like me????

GOD's POEM

Continued

Of all the forces that have worked and are still working to mould the destinies of the human race, none, certainly, is more potent than that the manifestation of which we call religion.

The excat definition of the Sanskrit word Rishi is a seer of Mantras - of the thoughts conveyed in the Vedic hymns.

Man is man, so long as he is struggling to rise above Nature, and this Nature is both internal and external.

The mainspring of the strength of every race lies in its spirituality and the death of that race begins the day that spirituality wanes and materialism gains around.

Truths does not pay homage to any society, ancient or modern. Society has to pay homage to Truth, or die.

In Buddha we had the great, universal heart, and infinite patience making religion practical and bringing it to everyone's door. In Sankaracharya we saw tremendous intelectual power throwing the scorching light of reason upon everything. We want today that bright sun of intellectuality joined with the heart of love and mercy. This union will give us the highest philosophy. Science and religion will meet and shake hands. Poetry and philosophy will become friends. This will be the religion of the future, and if we can work it out, we may be sure that it will be for all times and peoples.....
To be continued

HOLY MOTHER JAYANTHI

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SUtnkaJCnUI/AAAAAAAAAUE/NynuWHrPTyA/s320/HolyMOtherJayanthi_2008-2009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281428863212232002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HbyHCBRMAiQ/SUtkfR-UR4I/AAAAAAAAAT8/Nuc0ae37xGk/s320/HolyMOtherJayanthi_2008-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281425476585539458" />

Let's take this opportunity to get together and celebrate and obtain HER blessings

MARGAZHI

It is Margazhi and I feel very blessed to be able to observe this again this year and it is even more meaningful as we are able to offer the Vilvam leave (form our own garden) everyday to our Lingam.

My husband and I start the morning, as early as 4.30am, with abishekam to our Lingam and chanting the 108 Potri’s. After this, we sing the ThirupaLLiyezhuchchi, for the first 10 days and followed by Thiruvembavai until the end of Margazhi.
Manikkavachakar, composed the 'Thiruvachakam' that comprises 3 works namely Thiruvembavai, Kuyirpattu and Thirupalliyezhuchi that contain 700 songs.
I am at no position to explain about these song… but they are simply beautiful and trust me, singing them and understanding what it means is very blissful. I thank my husband who taught me these songs.

As for the Lord Krishna devotees, the Thirupavai is sung, which was composed by Sri Andal.
Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, says Maasanam Margasheershoham - among the twelve months, I am Margazhi. These again a beautiful song.

So, it is immaterial if you are a devotee of Lord Siva or Lord Kirshna, or any other diety, Margazhi is special to us and gives us the opportunity to show our LOVE and pray for The Almighty’s blessings and guidance.

Below are the Thirupalliyezhuchi and Thiruvembavai for your reference.

ThiruppaLLiyezuchchi

1.
pORRien vAzmudhal Agiya poruLE
pularn^dhadhu pUN^kazaR kiNaithuNai malarkoNdu
ERRin^in thirumugath themakkaruL malarum
eziln^agai koNdun^in thiruvadi thozokOm
chERRidhazk kamalaN^gaL malarumthaN vayalchUz
thirupperun^ thuRaiyuRai chivaperu mAnE
ERRuyar kodiyudai yAy enai udaiyAy
emperu mAnpaLLi ezun^dharu LAyE
Meaning:
Praises, Oh The Thing that is the principal for my life ! Hope you will enjoy reading this...

One of the greatest lessons I have learned in my life is to pay as much attention to the means of work as t its end. All the secret of success is there: to pay as much attention to the means as to the end.

The weak have no place here, in this life or in any other life. Weakness leads to slavery. Weakness leads to all kinds of misery physical and mental. Weakness is death.

This is the great fact: strength is life; weakness is death. Strength is felicity, life eternal, immortal.

Therefore I say, we require super-divine power. super-human power is not strong enough. Super divine strength is the only way, the one way out.

We only get what we deserve.
Man is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but the centre is located on one spot, and God is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but whose centre is everywhere.

A man can be of gigantic intellect, yet spiritually he may be a baby.
Religion is not in doctrines,in dogmas, not in intellectual argumentation, it is in being and becoming; it is realization.

The wicked see this world as a perfect hell, and the good as a perfect heaven. Lovers see this world as full of love, and haters as full of hatred. Fighters see nothing but strife, and the peaceful nothing but peace. The perfect man sees nothing but God....

To be continued

A Visit to Rumah Hope

The wonderful souls at the http://www.mindsblog.com/ are planning for a visit to the Rumah Hope in Petaling Jaya next week Saturday, 13th Dec. My eldest daughter will be starting her Standard 1 in Jan next year and my youngest daughter will be attending her 2nd year in Kindergarten.

How fast they grow…….. I hope, we can fulfill the role entrusted to us to educate them, with the blessings of my Guru and the Almighty…..

Swami Vivekananda points out, Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested all your life. We must have life-building, man-making and character-making assimilation of ideas. If you have assimilated five ideas and made that your life and character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart a hole library.

Swami also said Education, education, education alone! Traveling through many cities of Europe and observing in them the comforts and education of even the poor people, there was brought to my mind the state of our own poor people, and I used to shed tears. What made the difference? Education was the answer I got. Through education comes faith in one’s own self, and through faith on one’s own self, the inherent Brahman is waking up in them, while the Brahman in us is gradually becoming dormant.

Please bless and guide us through this journey………

YOGA

Today, there are many misleading information regarding YOGA. As for me, I do not accept any other explanation other than from my Holy Trio’s saying.

Below is what Swami Vivekananda have explained in regards to YOGA.

FOUR PATHS OF YOGA

(Written by the Swami during his first visit to America in answer to questions put by a Western disciple.)

Our main problem is to be free. It is evident then that until we realise ourselves as the Absolute, we cannot attain to deliverance. Yet there are various ways of attaining to this realisation. These methods have the generic name of Yoga (to join, to join ourselves to our reality). These Yogas, though divided into various groups, can principally be classed into four; and as each is only a method leading indirectly to the realisation of the Absolute, they are suited to different temperaments. Now it must be remembered that it is not that the assumed man becomes the real man or Absolute. There is no becoming with the Absolute. It is ever free, ever perfect; but the ignorance that has covered Its nature for a time is to be removed. Therefore the whole scope of all systems of Yoga (and each religion represents one) is to clear up this ignorance and allow the Âtman to restore its own nature. The chief helps in this liberation are Abhyâsa and Vairâgya. Vairagya is non-attachment to life, because it is the will to enjoy that brings all this bondage in its train; and Abhyasa is constant practice of any one of the Yogas.

Karma-Yoga. Karma-Yoga is purifying the mind by means of work. Now if any work is done, good or bad, it must produce as a result a good or bad effect; no power can stay it, once the cause is present. Therefore good action producing good Karma, and bad action, bad Karma, the soul will go on in eternal bondage without ever hoping for deliverance. Now Karma belongs only to the body or the mind, never to the Atman (Self); only it can cast a veil before the Atman. The veil cast by bad Karma is ignorance. Good Karma has the power to strengthen the moral powers. And thus it creates non-attachment; it destroys the tendency towards bad Karma and thereby purifies the mind. But if the work is done with the intention of enjoyment, it then produces only that very enjoyment and does not purify the mind or Chitta. Therefore all work should be done without any desire to enjoy the fruits thereof. All fear and all desire to enjoy here or hereafter must be banished for ever by the Karma-Yogi. Moreover, this Karma without desire of return will destroy the selfishness, which is the root of all bondage. The watchword of the Karma-Yogi is "not I, but Thou", and no amount of self-sacrifice is too much for him. But he does this without any desire to go to heaven, or gain name or fame or any other benefit in this world. Although the explanation and rationale of this unselfish work is only in Jnâna-Yoga, yet the natural divinity of man makes him love all sacrifice simply for the good of others, without any ulterior motive, whatever his creed or opinion. Again, with many the bondage of wealth is very great; and Karma-Yoga is absolutely necessary for them as breaking the crystallisation that has gathered round their love of money.

Next is Bhakti-Yoga. Bhakti or worship or love in some form or other is the easiest, pleasantest, and most natural way of man. The natural state of this universe is attraction; and that is surely followed by an ultimate disunion. Even so, love is the natural impetus of union in the human heart; and though itself a great cause of misery, properly directed towards the proper object, it brings deliverance. The object of Bhakti is God. Love cannot be without a subject and an object. The object of love again must be at first a being who can reciprocate our love. Therefore the God of love must be in some sense a human God. He must be a God of love. Aside from the question whether such a God exists or not, it is a fact that to those who have love in their heart this Absolute appears as a God of love, as personal.

The lower forms of worship, which embody the idea of God as a judge or punisher or someone to be obeyed through fear, do not deserve to be called love, although they are forms of worship gradually expanding into higher forms. We pass on to the consideration of love itself. We will illustrate love by a triangle, of which the first angle at the base is fearlessness. So long as there is fear, it is not love. Love banishes all fear. A mother with her baby will face a tiger to save her child. The second angle is that love never asks, never begs. The third or the apex is that love loves for the sake of love itself. Even the idea of object vanishes. Love is the only form in which love is loved. This is the highest abstraction and the same as the Absolute.

Next is Râja-Yoga. This Yoga fits in with every one of these Yogas. It fits inquirers of all classes with or without any belief, and it is the real instrument of religious inquiry. As each science has its particular method of investigation, so is this Raja-Yoga the method of religion. This science also is variously applied according to various constitutions. The chief parts are the Prânâyâma, concentration, and meditation. For those who believe in God, a symbolical name, such as Om or other sacred words received from a Guru, will be very helpful. Om is the greatest, meaning the Absolute. Meditating on the meaning of these holy names while repeating them is the chief practice.

Next is Jnâna-Yoga. This is divided into three parts. First: hearing the truth — that the Atman is the only reality and that everything else is Mâyâ (relativity). Second: reasoning upon this philosophy from all points of view. Third: giving up all further argumentation and realising the truth. This realisation comes from (1) being certain that Brahman is real and everything else is unreal; (2) giving up all desire for enjoyment; (3) controlling the senses and the mind; (4) intense desire to be free. Meditating on this reality always and reminding the soul of its real nature are the only ways in this Yoga. It is the highest, but most difficult. Many persons get an intellectual grasp of it, but very few attain realisation.

CUMMIN

This is a cumin (known as jeera) plant at my garden. This is yet another important spice in Indian cooking. The flower are yellow and is beautiful. The seeds are used as whole or powedered. I have also used the leaves in salads and also in curries and it does taste good. This is a very easy to grow. Just soak the seed in water for about 1 hr and sow into the soil, simple as that........

Below are some useful information from http://www.ayurhelp.com/plants/Cumin-jeera.htm

According to ayurveda jeera exhibits the following medicinal properties :

It reduces superficial inflammation and pain.

Apart from kindling appetite, it digests food and normalizes vata in digestive system.

Reduces pain experienced during indigestion, flatulence or heaviness of stomach .

It purifies blood

Cumin seeds act on female reproductive system by reducing inflammation of uterus.

It is eulogized for its galactogog properties. (Increases milk production in lactating mothers).

As it normalizes vata and kapha it acts as an aphrodesiac.

It is a skin friendly herb and reduces itching.

Home remedies using jeera

A fine paste of cumin seeds (cumin seeds ground with water), when applied on boils or aching body parts gives relief from pain.

Water boiled with ground jeera has to be given regularly to lactating mothers. This increases breast milk and reduces inflammation of uterus.

Boil ground jeera in water and allow it to cool down. Add a pinch of cardamom to filtered jeera water. Gargling with this flavored water helps to keep the mouth fresh, heals mouth ulcers and eliminates foul smell.

Roast jeera without oil till it warm. Grind this to a fine powder along with rock salt. Massage gums with this powder. This helps to prevent bleeding from gums and strengthens them.

Boil a tea spoon of jeera in a glass of water, allow it to cool. Consuming this water frequently relieves indigestion and flatulence.

Consuming powdered jeera with honey reduces colic pain and reduces diarrhea caused due to indigestion.

A tea prepared by boiling cumin seeds and a small piece of fresh ginger help to give relief in common cold.

Mix a spoon of ground roasted cumin seeds ,½ spoon of fresh ginger juice and a pinch of salt in a glass of butter milk. Ramprasad’s songs are the favorites of Sri Ramakrishna.
I came across this name, while I was reading The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. This is how I was blessed to know these 2 great saints and sons of Kali Maa.

Ramprasad is always immersed in meditation and spiritual practice. Among other sadhanas, he was known for standing neck-deep in the Gangai, deeply absorbed in the thought of the Divine Mother and singing songs (Bengali) to Kali. And this would attract the by standers. He also always ends the song with his name added into the song

I would strongly suggest that you buy and read Ramprasad, The Melodious Mystic by Swami Budhananda if you want to know more about this saint.

Below is one of Ramprasad’s poem that has been translated to English.

O mind, you do not know how to farm!
Fallow lies the field of your life.
If you had only worked it well,
How rich a harvest you might reap!
Hedge it about with Kali’s name
If you would keep your harvest safe;
This is the stoutest hedge of all,
For death himself cannot come near it.

Sooner or later will dawn the day
When you must forfeit your precious field;
Gather, O mind, what fruit you may.
Sow for your seed the holy name
Of God that your Guru has given to you,
Faithfully watering it with love;

And if you find your task too hard,
Call upon Ramprasad for help.

Make Money Work At Home

Try It Now, No Risk!

This is affordable, ease and amazing. Brokenhearted and unable to bear his overwhelming grief, Gopal went to a friend, Dr. Mahendra Pal of Sinthi, for consolation. Mahendra was a devotee of Sri Ramakrishna, so he suggested that Gopal see the master at Dakshineshwar. Sometime in March or April 1884, Mahendra accompanied Gopal on a visit there. There first visit was a simple visit. The second time Gopal went to Dakshineshwar, Sri Ramakrishna, like a good physician, gave him an infallible antidote for his grief.

Gopal later narrated what happened after his third visit: “The Master possessed me. I would think of him day and night. The pang of separation from the Master gave me chest pain. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t forget his face.”
Gopal Chadra Ghosh was born in 1828 at Rajpur (Jagaddal) in 24- Paraganas, nearly 25 miles north of Kolkata.

As he had no family ties after the death of his wife, Gopal moved from Sinthi to Dakshineshwar to serve the Master. Sri Ramakrishna accepted Gopal as his disciple and would address him as “the elder Gopal” or “Overseer.” The other disciples called him “Gopal-da”, since he was eight years older than Ramakrishna.

The Master introduced him to Holy Mother, who needed a person who could shop and run errands for her. Sri Ramakrishna praised Gopal’s managerial capacity in household affairs and his sweet behavior with people. In spite of his age, Gopal tried to keep the same pace as the other young disciples. When Narendra would sing to the accompaniment of the Tanpura (a stringed instrument0 in the Master’s room, Gopal would play the Tabala (drums)

In September 1885 Ramakrishna moved to Shyampukur in Kolkata for cancer treatment and Gopal accompanied him. He served the Master like a nurse, giving him medicine and proper diet. Usually Holy Mother prepared the Master’s food and carried it to his room. Gopal acted as holy Mother’s messenger; he was free with her, and she did not cover her face with a veil in front of him.

On Tuesday, 12 January 1886 (Makar-Sankranti), Gopal gave the ochre clothes and rosaries to the Master, who touched them and sanctified them with a mantram. He himself then distributed them among his young disciples. The disciples who received the ochre clothes were: Narendra, Rakhal, Niranjan, Baburam, Shashi, Sharat, Kali, Jogin, Latu, Tarak, and Gopal. The 12 th cloth and rosary, according to the Master’s instruction, were set aside for Girish Ghosh.
After passing away of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Advaitananda visited many holy places in India. He passed five years in Varanasi practicing austerities and forgetting the mundane world. Swami Advaitananda was entrusted a job of leveling the new plot of land purchased at Belur. Apart from leveling the ground and other construction work, Advaitananda started a vegetable garden and a dairy farm. Swami Adbhutananda recalled about the early days: “Without Gopal-da the monks of Belur Math would not have had vegetables along with their rice. He worked so hard to produce various kinds of vegetables in the monastery garden.”

He kept himself busy in the service of Sri Ramakrishna and couldn’t bear lazy people. Because of his age and temperament he did not engage in public activities such as relief work and preaching; his monastic life was therefore uneventful. In spite of that, he definitely set an example for all and he was a source of inspiration to many.

Swami Advaitananda passed away at 4.15p.m. on Tuesday, 28 December 1909.
Sri Ramakrishna made him a role model for elderly seekers of God. He will be remembered by the Ramakrishna Order for his cheerful manner and methodical ways, his self-reliance, his untiring zeal in every work he undertook, and his implicit devotion to the Master and his cause.

Kolam

Kolam is something I enjoyed doing during my young days, but I could not boast that I was very good at it...... I was just an average and there were limited patterns that I could draw. Along the way, due to my schedule and priorities, these were conveniently forgotten...... Until last week, whereby I was forced to do Kolam by my kutties… Below is the outcome…

I also gathered the below information, from Wikipedia,

Kolam (Tamil: கோலம் kõlaṁ) is a form of sandpainting that is drawn using rice powder by female members of the family in front of their home. It is widely practised by Hindus in South India. A Kolam is a sort of painted prayer — a line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots.

Purpose
Kolams are thought to bestow prosperity to homes. Every morning in southern India, millions of women draw kolams on the ground with white rice powder. Through the day, the drawings get walked on, rained out, or blown around in the wind; new ones are made the next day. Every morning before sunrise, the floor is cleaned with water, the universal purifier, and the muddy floor is swept well for an even surface. The kolams are generally drawn while the surface is still damp so that it is held better. Occasionally, cow-dung is also used to wax the floors. Cow dung has antiseptic properties and hence provides a literal threshold of protection for the home. It also provides contrast with the white powder.
Decoration was not the sole purpose of a Kolam. In olden days, kolams used to be drawn in coarse rice flour, so that the ants don't have to work so hard for a meal. The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small critters to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one's home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. It is a sign of invitation to welcome all into the home, not the least of whom is Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity. The patterns range between geometric and mathematical line drawings around a matrix of dots to free form art work and closed shapes. Folklore has evolved to mandate that the lines must be completed so as to symbolically prevent evil spirits from entering the inside of the shapes, and thus are they prevented from entering the inside of the home.

3x3 dot all and only symmetry 9 Goddesses Swastika Kolam with a single cycle by Nagata S, each of which is corresponded to one of the nine Davi of the Hindu or the nine Muses in Greek
It used to be a matter of pride to be able to draw large complicated patterns without lifting the hand off the floor standing up in between. The month of Margazhi was eagerly awaited by young women, who would then showcase their skills by covering the entire width of the road with one big kolam.
The ritual kolam patterns created for occasions such as weddings can stretch all the way down streets. Patterns are often passed on generation to generation, from mother to daughter.
Variants
For special occasions limestone and red brick powder to contrast are also used. Though kolams are usually done with dry rice flour, for longevity, dilute rice paste or even paints are also used. Modern interpretations have accommodated chalk, and more recently vinyl stickers (that defeat the original purpose).

Rangoli in front of house during Pongal
Kolam is not as flamboyant as its other Indian contemporary, Rangoli, which is extremely colourful.

Patterns
- a pattern, in which a stroke (Kambi, Sikku in Tamil) runs once around each dot (Pulli), and goes to the beginning point (endless/cycle), as a mostly geometrical figure. The stroke called as Neli from a snaky line. The stroke has Knot (Sikku) structure.
-a pattern, in which a stroke runs around each dot not completely, but open.
-a pattern, in which strokes (Kodu/Kotto)are connected between the dots. Sometimes it represents kinds of objects, flowers, or animals etc.
-a pattern, in which dots are set in a radial arrangement, called Lotus.
-a pattern, which is drawn in a free style and mostly colourised.

Fruit Trees

Apart from being a vivid vegetable, I and my husband, also have planted some fruit trees. Gandhiji was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar, a small town on the western coast of India.

I am sure all are aware about Gandhji’s life and and His preaching of Ahimsha. Today I would like share on something that I have read about Gandhji that have touched my heart.

The below is a part of the lecture by Professor Madhu Dandwate on "Gandhi's Human Touch”. I read this some years back, but every time I read this, my mind fails to control the tears that swells in my eyes…..

If only we could practice even a small friction of what Ghandji have preached… the world would be a better place to live…Don’t you agree with me????

Women in Champaran

Sensitivity for the problems of women as the weakest among the weak was another trait of Gandhi. Gandhi had sent a team of workers to study and report on the problems of the Champaran district. But the report they gave him did not refer to any problems of the women there. "How can any report be complete without an account of the women's problems?", he asked. The workers told Gandhi that the women of Champaran were very shy and would not meet them. Gandhi then deputed Kasturba Gandhi and Avantikabai Gokhale to visit Champaran to report on women's agony. The women of Champaran would not first meet them and even open their doors.
At sunset, Kasturba Gandhi knocked one door and told the women inside: " We are moving round your town from sunrise to sunset. We are now thirsty. Will you not offer us a glass of water ?" A door was then slightly opened. A woman's hand peeped out with a glass of water on her palm. Kasturba drank water and then said: " Sister we have seen your hand. We have seen the glass of water on your palm. But we want to see the woman behind this hand." The woman inside broke down. She said: "Three women of our household share only one untorn saree and as one woman has gone out with that saree how could others open the door for you and expose our semi-naked bodies?" Kasturba told the weeping woman: "Close the door. The doors of your heart are opened." Kasturba and Avantikabai, touched by the reply, returned to Gandhi with this heart-rending report about women in Champaran. It steeled Gandhi's determination not to rest till the honour of these women were restored.
