Super Sunday Artist Spotlight - Paul Schmitt

2012-04-22T09:30:00.036-05:00

It seems like a vast majority of the handmade market is made up of jewelry and clothing artisans of various niches, photographers, and artists who sell prints of their work. From what I've seen, there are few who work with media aside from the occasional zine or journal here and there. That's why it's really neat to have come across this week's feature. Paul is an artist who uses his talents to make comics and graphic novels. He was kind enough to share some insight into his work process and what motivates him.

Paul owns Gargantuan Media and has an Etsy.

What is your specialty and medium of choice?
I make comics and graphic novels. I make complete pages from really rough sketches then flesh them out into full pages of pencils. After that I digitally ink and color them.

It all starts with Ticonderoga #2 pencils and an idea. And coffee. Don’t forget that part.

How would you describe your style?
I like Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 1960's a great deal. The imagination in these characters is extraordinary. I think "cartoon" is a good way to describe the style of my first book Roaches, very well.

How did you get started with your craft/artform? Was it difficult to learn?
In the part of the US I grew up in there was no real art education. The nearest thing I had to a formal education before art school was a compulsive need to draw and forged hall passes. Since college, I've worked as an Artist in many companies including book publishers and academic institutes.

Fine art techniques and traditional illustration are not easy to learn. They both take years of development and usage to reach a level of personal satisfaction for both the artist and audience. Even today, after 10 years of projects, I'm still learning all the time.

Tell me a little about your creative process. What inspires you?
In comics, there's a tendency to over-generalize and throw spandex on everyone. I like specific situations that are outside of the norm minus the spandex and capes. Roaches, told from the point of view of a demented "king" Roach goes into bizarre specifics on a number of subjects. The whole book is told from the twisted point of view of a narcissistic megalomaniac who is 2 inches tall. You won't see that in major books. I'm inspired by weird paradoxes and unusual subject matter.

Approximately how long does it take to finish a new piece?
One year is a good time frame for a graphic novel. Roaches started in Fall of 2010 as a web comic that became popular enough to be published by my own small publishing effort, Gargantuan Media, in Fall of 2011. I started selling these books at that time. In early 2012, I took it to my first comic con - and it started selling pretty well.

What is your favorite piece so far? Can you tell me a little about why it is special to you?
My favorite piece is a series of sculptures on Etsy called Wall Tentacles (image on side). They are these giant octopus tentacles reaching out of a porthole from a freighter ship. They are bizarre and extremely detailed. A piece like that changes a room from a boring place into a Jules Verne novel. I love that.

As a self-published graphic novelist, what challenges have you had to overcome to realize your goals?
Printing fees and promotions are my biggest challenges. The first hurdle is always financial - meaning the printing fees themselves. Book publishing is demanding and expensive to make happen. Getting the initial printing fees paid is a major challenge.

The second challenge is promoting this book. Promoting a product means having a good product in the first place. I read that 200,000 books are released each year in America alone. In order to stand out, a book needs original concepts and good execution.

How did you become self-published?
The short answer is that no one wanted this book. It was basically an orphan! I knew that it was a good book - funny and original. I would get really kind rejection notices (and still do).

So, I created a web presence for it (sites, samples, blogs) saved a few bucks and published it myself. I’ve found that this is a very personally rewarding experience and look forward to publishing many more books.

Do you have any advice or tips for fellow artists?
I must repeat the same thing that successful people like David Sim (Cerebus) and Wendy and Richard Pini (Elfquest) have said: If you love something and it loves you back - it's yours. No one can take that from you and no one else can stop you from doing this thing. No one can stop you but you.

Thank you for the great advice as well as the insight into the world of publishing! I look forward to seeing new works from you in the future. Be sure to check him out on ETSY and DEVIANTART! More information about the Roaches graphic novel can be found here.

Super Sunday Artist Spotlight - CC

2012-04-15T09:30:00.034-05:00

This week, I'm talking to the super-crocheter CC. She sells crochet patterns for amigurumis on her Etsy. If you've ever wondered how those cute little critters go from being jumbles of yarn to an intricate pattern, read what this crafty Etsian has to say.

What is your specialty and medium of choice?
I love yarn, of course! I specialize in crocheting amigurumi, especially sea creatures! If it is a marine invertebrate, I have either designed a pattern for it or have it on my list! I also do some embroidery and mosaics for fun.

How did you get started with your craft? Was it difficult to learn?
I have been interested in crafts for a while, so two summers ago I went with my mom to a local craft fair and saw that crochet classes were being advertised. I signed up for one and it was love at first stitch. I jumped almost immediately into designing my own patterns, and after a year of accumulating notes in various journals, decided to open up an Etsy store to sell my designs. It has been a hectic, crazy, fantastic time since then.

Tell me a little about your creative process. What inspires you?
I have ideas constantly hitting me. I'll see a picture of some cool animal and immediately start drafting up sketches. Of course, my life is pretty busy, so I can't do it all at once! I keep a giant word document with a list of ideas for projects and notes. When I decided to make a new pattern, I start by looking at lots of pictures for amigurumi and sketching various cartoony versions. When I hit upon a design I like, I set about breaking it into component parts ("Ooh, I could use a bunch of increases to achieve that effect!"). Next I actually start to crochet my first demo! That always takes a while, since I write down every step. Once I have that pattern, I crochet another amigurumi to test and tweak it, then I polish up the pattern and send it out to my pattern testers. After I make any last-minute changes that they suggest, I put the pattern in my shop!

Approximately how long does it take to finish a new piece?
Although it takes me under 8 hours for a single amigurumi, the whole pattern process can take about a month. This year I am releasing one new pattern every month, which means that I have been working nonstop! My next release is scheduled for the 28th of March. (Check it out!)

What is your favorite piece so far? Can you tell me a little about why it is special?
That is a tough choice! My two favorite patterns are probably the large cuttlefish (top of page) and the fat shark (side).
I love the cuttlefish because they are some of my absolute favorite animals, and I feel this pattern is indicative of my style - a semi-realistic, very cute rendition of a marine invertebrate. As for the fat shark, I just find it a very cartoony and cute pattern, and it took a long time for me to get the pattern just as I wanted it - I'm proud of my hard work.

Do you have any advice or tips for fellow crafters?
If you crochet, always take your work with you! I have a very busy schedule, and it is amazing how much work you can get done in tiny increments. Most people I know often ask how I find the time to make things - I just pack in the minutes! Is the bus three minutes late? Crochet three rows! Waiting for the pasta water to boil? Crochet another three! You'll have the finished piece in your hands before you know it.

I also encourage people to develop a community. Deviantart, Tumblr, Ravelry... these are great resources for crocheters! Deviantart and Tumblr can be valuable no matter what craft you practice.

Thank you so very much, CC! Your dedication to such a time-intensive craft is inspiring. It was lovely getting to know more about the crochet craft and amigurumis! Be sure to check out her ETSY, DEVIANTART, and TUMBLR!

Super Sunday Artist Spotlight - Kinga

2012-03-25T10:00:00.005-05:00

Today's featured artist is the amazingly talented kanzashi artist Kinga from Warsaw, Poland. Although she is self-taught in the technique, her pieces are traditionally authentic and incredibly impressive.
Kinga also goes by Arleen on DeviantArt and Oiran on Etsy.

What is your specialty and medium of choice?
I make kanzashi, which are traditional Japanese hair ornaments. They are made of small squares of silk and nowadays are seen mostly on maiko (apprentice geisha) or women wearing kimono.

How would you describe your style?
Iki, which is the Japanese word for chic. Iki is an expression of simplicity, sophistication, spontaneity, and originality. Big words, I know, but I always try to make my works simple, yet classy. Silk textiles, simplicity of form, carefully chosen colors and even when I choose some wild, rainbow-colored pattern I add some black to moderate it and give it an elegant touch.

How did you get started with this craft? Was it difficult to learn?
I was looking for some information about kimos, and naturally, I stumbled on photos of maiko who wore those gorgeous bouquets. I started researching and found an old video which showed what they really are and how to make them. I so just tried and got hooked. The craft itself isn't difficult to learn, anyone can do it, but it takes practice and patience to look really good. A lot depends on materials too.

Tell me a little about your creative process. What inspires you?
Traditional crafts are the best inspiration for me. I look at photos of maiko and their kimonos. Also textiles - I just try to be reasonable and follow my instinct - sometimes I just know something will work, and something will not!

Approximately how long does it take to finish a new piece?
Anything between 2 hours and a week, depending on what I'm making: a pair of earrings or a full maiko hairpin.

What is your favorite piece so far? Can you tell me a little about why it is special to you?
I think I have a few of my favorites, but if I had to choose one I'd say this one. (pictured on right)

Now, I'd add another string of petals, but I still think that the vibrant color with a touch of silver work well on this. Plus, I've painted every single piece of silk by hand, and it was the first I used mizuhiki cords (Japanese paper cords).

Do you have any advice or tips for fellow crafters?
Work hard on your own style - you'll be recognizable among other artists which means a lot these days. Also - which may seem kind of weird - don't change the art form too often. Getting really good takes time, and you can't expect results changing what you do every month or so.

3 Nest Inspired Spring Treats

2012-03-20T09:25:00.044-05:00

Spring imagery is some of my personal favorites. The pastel colors and general adorableness are as heartwarming as they are appealing to the senses. It isn't just bunnies and baby chicks; bird nests are a prominent image, symbolizing nature and new life. Check out these three bird nest inspired desserts. Not only are they impressive and simple to make, they're tasty, too!

Kick things off in the kitchen with these neat chocolate spoon nests from Cute Food For Kids.

Making them is a cinch, and they're absolutely adorable. These make great gifts or even baked sale goodies! Learn to make them with the fully photographed and simple to follow step-by-step instructions here.

Here's another fun treat you can make with your kids: Rice Krispie Treat Easter Basket from Beauty and Bedlam.

Incredibly quick and easy - they're your basic Krispie Treats with a creative twist! Find the full instructions here.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can tackle this beautiful Rich Chocolate Cake with Ganache Frosting and Truffle-Egg Nest, courtesy of Martha Stuart.

It's a little more time-intensive and definitely not as kid-friendly, but the end result is fabulous. It would be great for a party or social gathering. Find the full instructions here.

Super Sunday Artist Spotlight - Kai

2012-03-18T10:00:00.000-05:00

Our first ever feature is Kai, an artist from the swamps of Sweden. He's known as Mant-Ra on DeviantArt.

What is your specialty and medium of choice?
I am not really sure if I have a medium of choice. I enjoy working with lots of different things. I have a love for organic materials such as bone, horn, wood and leather, but I also enjoy working with some metals, copper being my favorite. In terms of more traditional art I like to work in acrylics, oil and water colours, also various types of pens. I also sculpt in both polymer and natural clay.

How would you describe your style?
Somewhere between surreal/dreamlike, tribal and post-apocalyptic. And various other things.

How did you get started with your craft/artform? Was it difficult to learn?
I didn't find it difficult. But most of the time I didn't really decide "Now I am going to learn this thing!" either... I just kind of taught myself along the way.

Tell me a little about your creative process. What inspires you?
I am inspired by my dreams, artist friends and myths/legends. Often I have an idea of what I want to do right from the start, but sometimes I just play and let things happen. I generally don't have a lack of ideas or end up doing nothing.

Approximately how long does it take to finish a new piece?
Anywhere from an hour to a few months... it depends entirely on what I am doing.

What is your favorite piece so far? Can you tell me a little about why it is special to you?
It's really difficult to choose something to be honest...I am very, very fond of [these] (pictures featured). They are special to me because they feel closest to what I want to achieve.

Do you have any advice or tips for fellow crafters?
Never stop doing what you really want to do yourself! Don't get too influenced by "what will sell."

5 Ways to Inspire Ideas

2012-03-13T17:44:00.001-05:00

The other day, I was talking to an acquaintance of mine about art. They totally floored me by showing me some recent pieces they'd finished and sharing all the projects and ideas they'd thought up. The excitement they were exuding was almost tangible. I was jealous! I've been in such a lull and unable to think up fresh ideas in so long.

Once in a while you may find yourself running into a creative roadblock. Here some of the things I do to get myself back on track.

1. Brainstorm anything and everything - It's not always about having the ONE GREAT IDEA. Statistically speaking, the chance that you will suddenly dream up the ONE GREAT IDEA is pretty slim. Sit down and try making a list or doodling every idea that pops into your mind. The more you get down on paper, the better the chances for great ideas that you can act on.

2. Look for inspiration in everything - You need to be open to new ideas, even from places that you least expect it. Awareness is key!

3. Utilize image websites - If you've never heard of Pinterest, you should check it out. It's just one of several social image sharing sites that can help spark some great ideas. DeviantArt, Flickr, and Photobucket are some other popular ones. Just be careful to not steal someone else's ideas! There's a fine line between being influenced by someone and copying their work.

4. Stumble! - StumbleUpon isn't just an awesome time waster. If you configure it to allow a wide range of content, you will be pleasantly surprised to find great stuff that you'd otherwise have never known about.

5. See amazing ideas in action - One of my favorite things to do when I am feeling a lack of inspiration is to see new ideas in action. What better way to do this besides watching some TED talks? You're guaranteed to find something that interests you because there are so many ideas that cover such a wide range of topics. YouTube can also be a great place to find neat ideas, too.

What are some things YOU do to inspire greatness?

Easter Egg Artisan Challenge

2012-03-10T22:03:00.005-06:00

Hello, all! Long time, no see. It's been a while since I've updated. I'm slowly getting back into the hang of things. :3

Today, I'm going to be talking about the lovely time of year that is upon us! Spring! Easter is a great holiday for sparking your creativity. Decorating Easter eggs is not just a tradition that you celebrate as a kid in anticipation of playing the egg equivalent of hide-n-seek, it's a unique and delicate art form enjoyed by all ages and walks of life. Even if you don't celebrate the holiday, you can still enjoy coloring lovely eggs in honor of Spring.

This month, the Artisan Craft group on DeviantArt is hosting an egg and egg holder decorating challenge. The purpose is to expose all of you crafty folk to something new and hopefully inspire some awesomeness. If you're not a member of the group, it's simple to join. Not only are they a great and talented group of people, but it's a great way to get some extra exposure in the crafty community.

Here's the challenge post. You can decorate them however you'd like; one Deviant (CraftyLikeATodd) even knitted some adorable Spring themed eggies. Check out the current features for some inspiration. Never decorated an egg or are a little rusty? No worries, they have some wonderful tutorials listed at the bottom of the post. Be sure to look over the rules before submitting. Have fun, and get crafty!

Seller Feature

2011-06-24T20:54:00.000-05:00

A big thanks to everyone who came out for my BNR on Tuesday! Go check out these awesome sellers who bought in and got themselves a chance to be used in my giveaway:

krystleskrafts
JanetAndersonArt
ChroniclysILLYdesign
gottaspoilemgems
feltery
IdeasOnPaper
RenaissanceDays
grammalea
TheCraftingPlace
ButtonsAndYarnOhMy

I've ordered a few things for the giveaway already. Unfortunately, I realized that one of the sellers I bought from lives in Canada, so the giveaway *might* be delayed. Or I might just hold the items for my next giveaway. Who knows?!

Stay tuned for the next round of Anything Goes!

Anything Goes!

2011-06-21T09:27:00.000-05:00

If you have some free time today, I'm hosting an Anything Goes BNR. Please stop by if you can! It's connected to my 50th sale giveaway that I posted about last week.

You see, I need items to give away for my giveaway, or else it wouldn't be much of a giveaway, would it? I think it would be rather boring to give away stuff from my shop, if not time consuming since most of my items are made-to-order. So instead, I'll be using goodies that I buy from a variety of other Etsians.

So, what exactly does that mean?

Everyone whos item(s) I feature in my giveaway will be featured on this blog, my Facebook, and Twitter (free promotion!). Their items will be fully credited to them and they will get linked when possible.

How do you get the chance to become a featured seller in my giveaway, you ask? Just buy into the BNR and I'll throw your shop name into a randomized generator and pick my winners from there.

Today, it's storming really bad..lots of thunder and lightning. I hope it doesn't interfere with the BNR (power, please stay on!).

50 Sale Celebration

2011-06-15T09:25:00.003-05:00

I've almost reached 50 sales in my shop. How awesome is that?

I started my Etsy shop almost a year ago, very disillusioned and without first taking the time to properly understand the mechanics of the site and finer points of marketing. Lampshades N' Lollipops has come a very long way, building from the ground up on very shaky legs. 50 sales marks a huge milestone for me, one that means that I was able to achieve success.

To celebrate the occasion, I'll be hosting a giveaway that will include items from various Etsy members. I'll be posting details soon, so I suggest liking my Facebook page or following me on Twitter to keep in the loop (or following my blog if you haven't already!).

Etsy sellers: If you want me to consider you for being a featured seller in the giveaway, make sure to check out the BNR I'll be hosting next Tuesday (6/21) morning. Post in the comments if you would like to be contacted when the BNR starts.

Cheers!

I'm the April's Army shop of the day!

2011-06-13T11:06:00.000-05:00

Yay! I'm so excited! I was chosen to be featured as the shop of the day for April's Army! Do you know what that means? (Aside from excessive over-use of exclamation marks?) COUPON CODE! "APRILSARMY" gets you 10% off.

Now, a little about the team.

April's Army grew from the internet sensation Regretsy. I can't remember when or where or why, but it did. Actually, I think it started when readers started creating protest treasuries in order to call out re-sellers, but that's not important.

I know that Regretsy takes a lot of flack for being horrible and hurtful and all manner of negative adverbs and adjectives, but Regretsy does do a lot of good. It's actually really great exposure for people who get featured. It's become so huge that almost 90,000 people read it daily. Even if just a small fraction of those people click to visit the shop, that's still a significant number.

On top of that, April and her army of minions do some amazing charity work for the Etsy community. Every month, they feature a seller in need sell member donated items in their charity shop. All the money raised goes to that person.

If you're looking for an extremely active team of wonderful people, look no further than April's Army. The mini-community is fantastic and everyone helps each other out.

2011-06-09T15:07:00.000-05:00

I've been featured in a BNR (buy n' replace) before - hosted by a member of April's Army. This is my first BNS (buy n' stay) and I'm super excited! Come look at all these fine sellers. As an added bonus, I've got a special coupon code! "BNSSALE" will get you 10% off.

Don't forget, anyone with a shop can buy a spot for next round, just make sure you read the rules first! I have a spot in a Geeky BNS as well - I'll post more information on that as I find out!

Dirigible Plums

2011-06-07T11:25:00.004-05:00

It is common knowledge that dirigible plums (known as radishes to muggle-folk) enhance your perception of the extraordinary. It is also common knowledge that you will look great wearing these to see the final installment of the Harry Potter films which comes to theaters in about a month. Bonus points for attending the midnight premiere!

The next movie, which will be the second part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hits theaters on July 15. Get these earrings while you can!

This week I was lucky enough to be featured in a treasury by BeadsCraftz. I really love this treasury because of all the wonderful food - all skillfully made by a group of fabulous artisans. Click on the pictures to view them in their respective shops.
