What is Poverty Cycle?

At the beginning of 2020 just over 588 million people are living in extreme poverty, meaning that approximately 7.7% of the global population lives below the international poverty line of $1.9 per day. It means 588 million people presently have lack of basic assets and do not see a return on the assets they have. They are lacking behind with poverty due to poverty cycle. Hence today I am going to tell you about the poverty cycle.

The cycle of poverty begins when a child is born into a poor family. These families have no resources or limited resources to create opportunities to advance themselves which leaves them stuck in the poverty cycle. Because of this they will lose the opportunity to get educated. Lacking education will lead them to be unoccupied or to they will not get a sufficient income to complete their requirements. Hence it leads them their families to be poor. Therefore, their children will also be poor, and they will also not have sufficient resources to complete their requirements. Children living in poverty are more likely to experience illness due to unsafe water and poor sanitation, malnutrition, lack of access to education and inadequate health care.

So how can we break this poverty cycle. One of the best biggest contribution to ending the poverty is ensuring children’s education. For any child education can open doors to the future that would otherwise be locked wise be locked tight. Children’s who are not in school are at greater risk of exploitation and early marriage. They are on track for a much lower income once they grow up. This limits the future for their own children, thus repeating the cycle of poverty generation after generation.

However, even the most basic education reading, writing and arithmetic can open doors to futures that would otherwise be shut. Adults with even a basic education are better equipped to run a business for example, to keep accurate records and to secure loans to expand their ventures. They can read correspondence from potential business partners and write responses.

Breaking the poverty cycle is a complex process but one thing seems consistent. A child’s parents have the greatest influence on her economic well-being. World Vision works to raise the economic well-being of individual households, helping to break the poverty cycle within that family. People whose businesses are blossoming hire others to help them, breaking the cycle of poverty for other families. In time, the entire community is lifted.

Global warming isn’t a prediction, it is happening! A person denying it or unaware of it is in the most simple terms complicit. Do we have another planet to live on? Unfortunately, we have been bestowed with this one planet only that can sustain life yet over the years we have turned a blind eye to the plight it is in. Global warming is not an abstract concept but a global phenomenon occurring ever so slowly even at this moment.

First let’s focus about natural causes about global warming. The climate has continually changing. First one is greenhouse effect. It capture the solar rays and keep it by keeping it. Then it tends to increase temperature. Another one is volcanic eruptions. Single explosion can release great amount of carbon dioxide and ash. This also leads to increase the temperature. Also methane is effecting also it is an greenhouse gases. It is consider that methane is twenty times more effective than normal carbon dioxide.

Now lets focus on 2nd factor which is human influence. This is very serious issue nowadays. It is consider that this effects more than natural causes. Since human evaluation earth has change for many years till no it is still changing because of modern lifestyle. Human activities include industrial production, burning fuel, mining and deforestation. During mining methane gas is releases because in each core there are methane gas trapped in it and release during mining. Also deforestation has to do main role by human by cutting trees to production of paper, wooden structures. Trees can absorb more carbon dioxide but by cutting trees it reduce and increase temperature.

Now let’s focus about effects of global warming and solutions for that. Global warming cause on each is extremely serious. It can lead to many hazards. Such as polar ice caps, increasing sea level hurricanes storms heat waves and extreme rainfall will cause disaster to human kind.

As long as mankind produces greenhouse gases, global warming will continue to accelerate. The consequences are felt at a much smaller scale which will increase to become drastic in the near future. The power to save the day lies in the hands of humans, the need is to seize the day. Energy consumption should be reduced on an individual basis. Fuel efficient cars and other electronics should be encouraged to reduce the wastage of energy sources. This will also improve air quality and reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is an evil which can only be defeated when fought together. It is better late than never. If we all take steps today, we will have a much brighter future tomorrow. Global warming is the bane of our existence and various policies have come up worldwide to fight it but that is not enough. The actual difference is made when we work at an individual level to fight it. Understanding its import now is crucial before it becomes an irrevocable mistake. Exterminating global warming is of utmost importance and each one of us is as responsible for it as the next.

My Pet is a Dog

I have a pet dog. I named it Doggie. Doggie is a white colored shepherd dog. it is very lovely and It always licks my cheek. Doggie had been trained before while it is in the pet dog. So, it knows how to go back home, sit, stand and stay.

Doggie is special to me because it is just like my best friend. every time when I come back from school, it will run out quickly to welcome me. it will jump onto my arm and lick my cheek. when I am free, I will play with Doggie in the garden. it will lie down on my feet, roll over and squirm around me until I give it a stomach rub. I am happy to have a friend who is never busy and can always play with me when I am lonely.

Besides, Doggie is just like my family safety guard. it will always help us to take care of our house. I remember that once there was a thief who tried to steal something valuable from my house. On that night, all of us were asleep. None of us noticed that the thief had broken into out house.

Luckily, we have Doggie. Doggie barked at the thief fiercely when it noticed the thief. It helped us to chase away the thief. All of us were as happy as a lark because nothing had been stolen by the thief.

I am very happy to have a pet dog like Doggie. I believe that caring for animals is important. So, I promised that I will take good care of Doggie forever.

My Teacher Miss Rani

The name of my teacher is Miss Rani. She is a very pleasant lady. Miss Rani likes children very much. She herself has many brothers and sisters at home. Most of them are going to school and she helps them in their lessons.

What she does for her own brothers and sisters is also done for the children in the class-room. She does not get angry easily. If some pupils are slow to learn, she takes great trouble to explain all the lessons slowly so that all the pupils can understand the lessons well. Sometimes, she also brings certain things into the class-room to explain a lesson. For example, one day she brought a toy ape to explain what an ape was. This makes her lessons very interesting indeed.

Miss Rani, sometimes, also takes all her pupils out for a visit to some interesting places. She believes that children could learn a lot by traveling. Last year she took our whole class to Colombo where we visited many interesting places such as, the museum, the zoo and World Trade Centre I am indeed very proud of my teacher, Miss Rani.

I have many friends of several races. But my best friend is a Hindu boy whose name is Kannan. He is a handsome boy. He and I first met at kindergarten and we became great friends. He is kind, jolly and helpful. We are classmates again this year and we go to school together each morning.

Kannan’s father is a carpenter. His mother looks after their small shop. They are very hard-working people. They are also very kind to me.

We are in the same class. He sometimes helps me in my lessons. I too sometimes help him to understand and learn a few difficult lessons.

After school, Kannan and I play some games. Sometimes we go out to catch some fish or birds which we really enjoy catching. We often return home very late after our hunting trips and our parents scold us severely. But Kannan and I are so interested in this kind of hunting that we cannot give it up. The she loves her family is proved every day. When my youngest brother is very hungry late in the night and cries for milk, she wakes up at once to make for him, even if she is tired or ill. In the same way, she wakes up before all the others and goes to bed last, so that everyone in the family can receive her care. If anyone in the family is ill, she is the one who is the most worried.

Such care and love no one in the world can give to me. For these reasons my mother will always the dearest person to me.

As responsible citizens we should very concern about this matter. overweight and obesity problems are significantly linked to unhealthy dietary patterns and physical inactivity, irregular food habits and they cause for several diseases.

The BMI, Body mass index is the basic value which we use to measure the body fat based on height and weight. We know some people wants to put much effort to maintain their BMI but others, they always remain in the green range. So, it depends on the internal metabolism of each individual. However to become healthy and physically active we should maintain over BMI in 17- 25 green range.

During my speech I would like to speck about, what are the short comes in the food habits and the persisting situation regarding the next generation healthcare. Food habits are the food choices preferred by persons in their daily life. They differ from person to person. A healthy dietary habit helps an individual to stay fit and well throughout his life.

Food and nutrition are the way that we get fuel, providing energy for our bodies. We need to replace nutrients in our bodies with a new supply every day. Water is an important component of nutrition. Fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are the main nutrition factors which include in foods.

Fast Food producer’s majority of customers are small children and the teenagers. There are many reasons causes for that. They can grab the attraction by the television commercial and other advertising means. There is concern that television advertising may have a negative, intended or unintended, influence on children. Children can be exploited more easily if they do not understand the difference between TV programming and commercials. Adverts can also increase parent-child conflict and lead to unhappier children.

If we look into health care diseases, we can identify gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, constipate and in diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol further the cancers. Insufficient intake of vitamin can cause for several diseases such as Rickets, Beriberi, Pellagra. Food poisoning is an illness caused by eating contaminated food. It's not usually serious and most people get better within a few days without treatment. In most cases of food poisoning, the food is contaminated by bacteria, such as salmonella or Escherichia coli.
With the intervention of fast-food serval food habit issues have occurred. Over use of several nutrition such as sugar, LDL and HDL cholesterol, and some minerals causes for diabetes, hypertension as well as cancers. most of them are irreversible. Unhealthy foods make food poisoning and food infections.

Gastritis is a group of diseases that cause inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Foods that may cause gastritis can differ from person to person, but in general, foods that can cause gastritis include beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine, spicy foods, foods that contain chocolate, foods high in fat.

Once we talk about the food habit and the next generation healthcare, the following groups are the most vital groups. Pregnant woman, Lactating Mothers, Infant and Young Child, Pre-school and School Children, Adults and Elderly. It is needed to ensure following among those groups. Ensure appropriate and adequate nutrition and related services for all pregnant women throughout the pregnancy enabling a delivery of a healthy baby with an adequate birth weight. For lactating mothers, it should be ensured supportive family environment, services and regulatory safety nets to enable mothers to provide optimal care including exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continuation of breast feeding for 2 years and beyond. Ensure a good foundation for all infants and young children during their early childhood years by providing optimal nutrition through provision of exclusive breast-feeding for 6 months followed by complementary feeding together with continued breast feeding for 2 years and beyond. All pre-school and primary school children should have access to adequate and safe nutrition, which will optimize their growth and development. Promote appropriate nutrition among adults and elderly to ensure prevention and control of nutrition related Non-Communicable Diseases.

Government hospitals specially fin out the healthcare of pregnant mothers, infants, child and differently abled persons. The specific professions such as public health inspector, midwife, food nutritionists are appointed to maintain better healthcare service.

Government conducts several programs to maintain better growth and reduce the malnutrition by introducing the programs like “Triposha program”. The clinical services functioning all over the country even in the rural areas.

Finally, we can keep good food habits by eating a variety of foods every day, eating plenty of vegetables and fruits, eating pulses, fish, dried fish, eggs, poultry and lean meat, consume milk or milk products daily, limiting salt intake and use only iodized salt, consuming less sugar, sweets or sweetened drinks, drinking plenty of water, maintain a healthy body weight through a balanced food intake and regular physical activity, start complementary feeding at the completion of 6 months, eating clean and safe foods, eating natural foods in preference to processed foods, including food and nutrition education as the compulsory subject in school curriculum. This will give students practical experience on the food preparation and cooking component which help them to make their life easier. Further, the theoretical knowledge regarding nutrition will assist these children to make selection of nutritious food and deny food those cause health hazards.

He stopped at each house and flies down the chimney to deliver his presents.

In the week before Christmas children are usually very well behaved, their parents tell them that Santa Claus will only give presents to children who are good. Another Christmas tradition is the Christmas tree people put small tree inside the house and decorate it with various pretty objects.

Nowadays, most people use an artificial tree instead of real tree. The tradition of the Christmas tree is actually older than Christmas itself. The people of Europe celebrated the beginning of the winter season in this way even before Christianity reached Europe. Christmas is one of the most important and enjoy holiday in Western countries.

Environmental pollution is comprised of two terms: environment and pollution. Simply put, the environment is everything that exists, everything that impacts and influences the survival, growth, and evolution of organisms. Pollution is defined as the presence of hazardous artificial components that disrupt the environment and provide health risks to humans and animals.

The environmental pollution is defined as the process of introducing of different harmful pollutants into environment that makes the environment unhealthy to live in for both humans and other living beings. In an elementary understanding, environmental pollution is a situation when the natural environment is unable to process the changes that are being brought about by human activities. In other words, environmental pollution is a situation when the harmful effects are due to the changes being brought about in the normal course of things by human activities.

Environmental pollution is happening in many parts of the world, especially in the form of air and water pollution. It can be seen in popular cities around all over the world. When human population increases their requirements increase and products the use increase. As a result of over consumption harmful gases and waste materials are released to atmosphere, water and land. This action takes place automatically without concern of our general knowledge.

There are basically three kinds of environmental pollution, those are Air, Water and Soil pollution.

Air Pollution occur due to, strong air pollutants like Nitrogen dioxide, Sulphur dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Ozone, airborne particles and volatile organic compounds.

Water Pollution occur due to, strong water pollutants like insecticides, pollutants from livestock operations, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), food processing waste and chemical waste.

Soil Pollution occur due to, strong soil pollutants like hydrocarbons, solvents, and heavy metals.

Among all of the above, the most damaging pollutants are fossil fuels and have been one of the most significant contributing factors to the global environmental pollution problem of the time. The evil effects of fossil fuels are that this cause air pollution and their presence in products like plastics, solvents, lubricating oils, detergents, and chemicals for industrial use cause soil pollution. Not only that, they also cause water pollution. Many developed countries have introduced certain laws to not only regulate various types of pollution but also the laws to mitigate the adverse effects of pollution. Pollution levels need to be controlled all the time if we want to keep our environment safe and healthy. Without proper pollution control, environment soon becomes unhealthy.

Then, question is how to protect environment from pollution? The answer is preventing introduction of pollutants into environment is the best way to protect environment from pollution. Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamities.

Knowledge is one of the most potent weapons in the world. It can create new things as well as it holds power to destroy the whole world. Knowledge plays an essential role in every sphere and activity of life. Knowledge is the things which create a line between humans and animals. So that more people can realise the importance of education and send their children whether it’s male or female to school and also help other children around who cannot afford going to school.

Every knowledgeable person is educated, but all educated person cannot be termed as knowledgeable. In today’s world of modernity, almost everyone is educated, but very few poses knowledge. The power of knowledge is even greater than that of education. It makes people realise the difference between good and evil, right and wrong. It gives the path to think in that direction which is quite different and unique. It helps in the development of overall personality.

Knowledge drives the person in the direction of mental, moral & spiritual advancement. It helps in decision making & overcoming fears as well as failure. It gives us sense & also ensures that we do not repeat the same mistake again & again. Evolution of humans has a significant role in the power of knowledge. Once humans used to live in caves without any advanced technology. However, today humans have explored many things which shows the power of knowledge. When two fighters fight, we will definitely assume that the stronger person will win. Then, in a war the country that commands a larger army is expected to emerge victorious. However, if we think deeply we will realise that knowledge is what makes a person more powerful and not physical strength. It does play an important role, but physical prowess without knowledge is like a blind giant who cannot deal with a person with sharp eyes. Leader who has thorough knowledge about his army men, knowledge of his enemy country and his strength, tactics as well as warfare strategy will defeat enemy who commands a larger army.

Knowledge is that weapon which never decreases on use. It keeps on increasing and improving with time. Sharing knowledge is one of the noblest act. It is one of the best tools to fight with the significant problems we are dealing today like lack of morality, corruption and many more. Someone can steal money, but knowledge can never be stolen, it is a treasure for a lifetime.

It is understood that most powerful tool in this world is not money, arms, or ammunition. It is the power of knowledge. Knowledge gives us the power to achieve physical strength and also spiritual strength to conquer the world. The inventions and advanced technologies, which we luxuriously enjoy nowadays, was once impossible. It is the power of Knowledge, which made humans build those inventions for our benefits. Spending lot of time on social media also brings a lot of health disorders like stress, anxiety and sleeplessness. Another drawback of social media is that we cannot trust all the information available here.

Some information can be true while some can be fake. At times false news spread like wildfire through this platform.

Our personal information becomes easily available to many on the same network. Hence, we need to stay alert on hackers. Apart from that cyber bullying is another major disadvantage of social media. Some people post negative and hate comments on other accounts and harass them.

Social media has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage like socialising has made our life simple and convenient. There are some disadvantages too. We need to use this platform wisely and in a limited way so that we can make the most out of these new platforms.

There are basically two types of people who think that Money can’t buy happiness. Those who have an excess of money and still find themselves unhappy and those who have never had plenty of money.

Happiness is always defined differently by different people. Somebody’s happiness may be a bad fortune to the other. So, ultimate happiness is something which differentiates you from the materialistic pleasures and you stay in constant bliss. You multiply your happiness by helping others, being calm and caring. This kind of happiness cannot be bought with money.

An achievement does bring happiness but for a short span. We work hard for years to achieve something but it vanishes in few days or months.

It will be wrong to say that money is not important. Just imagine, you are travelling somewhere with your family. In this journey, your goal is the journey itself and not the destination. That journey with family is the happiness but the fuel required to run the car throughout the journey requires money. Human life is very difficult to survive without money. You struggle for happiness when earning money is the only goal in your life.
You can acquire pleasure with money but actually you need a lot of money to buy pleasure. A wise man will not mix happiness with pleasure whereas a common man thinks pleasure as definitive happiness and at the end of the day he may find himself in depression, anger, loneliness but with a lot of money.

It should be noted that money is an essential part of modern life and one cannot survive without it but one should not make money as the sole source of happiness. Money can buy pleasures but not happiness and these two things should be kept different.

To become clearer, it can be identified as smoking in a place or area which is not a private property. In addition to that smoking in public can be identified as a major way of air pollution.

Smoking is a bad habit because it causes lung cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, chronic bronchitis and lung diseases as well. Smoking kills men. Unfortunately, it increases the risk of getting tuberculosis, eye diseases and malfunctioning of immune system.

History is the key to the future. If we imagine that the future is next to a door you have to open the door with a key before step forward the future. This famous saying says that key is history. This shows the importance of studying history.

The origin of the word history is from Greek word ‘historia’ which has the meaning of inquiry or knowledge acquired by investigation. So, the meaning of history is the study of the past.

A group of people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. They cannot exist. If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. It’s very much similar to a leaf that doesn't know it is part of the tree. A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.

Herodotus has been called the “father of history.” But in some sources, he is mentioned as father of lies as well. He is a Greek author who produced first narrative history. His accounts remain the leading source of original historical information not only for Greece between 550 and 479 B.C. but also for much of Western, Asia and Egypt at that time.

By learning history, we can learn how people lived in past, their culture, ways they found solutions for problems and many more. History tells us about challenges of past and how people faced them. By analyzing history, we can have solutions for future challenges well in advance.

Apart from that by knowing the history of our culture, the prosperity we had in past and the technical knowledge we had, helps us to increase the patriotism toward our county.

Thamara's Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an Island. There should be a coastal railway along coastal line around the Island. There’s a coastal highway next to the railway towards the country. No tourist hotels and constructions to be constructed beyond the coastal highway towards the beach. Tragically important constructions can be built outside the railway like military bases, ports, industrial factories and research centers.

Four directions of Sri Lanka (North, East, South, West) is represented by four animals. Huge statues of following animals to be built firmly in four corners of Island at sea shore as mentioned. North – Huge lion statue of 280 feet, East – Huge elephant statue of 350 feet, South – Huge buffalo statue of 250 feet, West – Huge horse statue of 300 feet. All status should be erected looking towards sea from land. In Kudiramalei point even today can be seen the ruins of huge horse statue built in ancient Sri Lanka.

Cities are built isolate from each other. Cities are divided by paddy fields and jungles. Above diagram shows an imaginary diagram of arrangement of a city. The city structure is common for all the cities but each city has its unique features which owned by the culture of particular area. Cities are in circular shape and there is a boundary around the city. Cities which have ports can be semicircular. Each city has main four entrances to four main directions. The Settlements in above diagram shows civilians homes in grey squares. All other segments of the circle should be filled with settlements. Blue colored squares show government buildings (Municipality, Court, Electricity board, water board etc.) and Police. Beyond the city boundary there are paddy fields surrounding city. Next to paddy field forests exists. Cemeteries are in jungles they are raw graves. The dead body is wrapped in white cloth and thrown into the raw grave.

Cities are interconnected with highways. High ways have an underground city bypass route under cities. And main railway goes from South to North horizontally in a map. Sub railways connects cities vertically in a map. Above imaginary map shows how roads, railways and cities connected. It is only an example which is drawn halfway. Part of Coastal Highway and Railway is shown on the map. Coastal highway and railway is there for uplift military activities. Main transportation among cities is railways. Intercity busses work from down wards to up awards and upwards to downwards.

Reservoirs are built at top level facing four directions country and under ground tunnels distribute water for four directions, water is used for cultivation, drink and human needs. These up-country reservoirs are isolated. No human settlements to be constructed closer to them. However there should be air force camps for security.

Buddhist temples are built on high grounds on cities. Except that temples can be built beyond cities in jungles without harming the nature vastly. Pagodas are built around the coastal line. It can be observed when sailing around Sri Lanka. All Sri Lankans are Buddhists. Religion plays a major role in all activities and life is based on religion.

The Broken Key

It was a Tuesday and I got late to reach my work place. As soon as I reached the workplace I rushed to the receptionist, collected the key of my office and hurried towards my office. There was a mess at the reception as they were arranging the place for a farewell ceremony.

I also had a lot of work to deal with, so as soon as I reached entrance door to my office. I bent forward to the door lock which was located at the bottom of the glass door. I tried to open the door with key but it was impossible. There were two halves in that glass door, two lock and one lock per each half. Both keys needed to open both of halves. I changed keys and gave a try again. This sudden incident arouses me up. I was too nervous as it was late. I changed two keys for three times but I couldn’t open at least one half of the huge glass door.

Finally, I put one key into a lock and turn it with all strength I got. Unfortunately, the key was twisted and broken into two pieces leaving one piece on my hand and other piece at the keyhole. I stool up with no hopes. I went back to the receptionist and explained the incident. Oh my gosh! They have given me a wrong key.

Having shifted to the right key I once again stepped towards the glass door and tried to open the door with next lock. I could open that half. I managed to enter the office from there and insert other key from inside of the office to the keyhole which stuck with broken key. I could open that half of the door from inside and I saw the tuck part of the broken key has come out a little bit. I pulled out the broken key and I could take that suck part.

The True Story of Fishmonger

I noticed a new fishmonger in our hometown one morning the other day. He was wearing a blue and white striped sarong with a discolored old white vest and old black coloured hat on his head. There were nearly 10 kilograms of fish in two metal containers he carried with him. There were taro leaves placed at the bottom of containers and fish were packed irregularly over taro leaves. There were sand on fishes and he absolutely looked like arrived just after fishing at sea. I wondered our hometown is located far away from nearest beach and how he arrived here such early in the morning. Usually people in our area bought fish from shops. However this was a new experience for our city dwellers and fishmonger could sell all his fish by noon.

With the lapse was time this traditional fishmonger became a common sight in Homagama. He turned up two or three times in every week. He carried more fresh fish for selling. He was a mobile fish monger and sold fish walking lane by lane and road by road.

One morning I happened to walk to town to buy some needs to a shop and I saw a strange three-wheeler stopped behind the shop. A familiar face came out the vehicle, the fishmonger wearing a denim trouser and ordinary shirt. He took off his denim trouser and wore an old sarong. Shifted himself to old vest and took his two old metal containers and placed few taro leaves at the bottom. Filled both containers with fish he brought in a regiform boxes with ice. Finally, he took a small sand bag out the vehicle and scattered sand on fish. He was an ordinary fishmonger who change his appearance to a traditional fishmonger and pretended he just arrived after fishing at sea!

The Truth Behind Festival Of April

The Sinhala and Tamil new year is a seasonal festival which is named as a folk festival in Sri Lanka falls on 13th and 14th April in every year. No acceptable evidence has found when was the birth of this fraudulent festival. Even though this festival known as an ancient festival in Sri Lanka in one angle it highlights our weakness as a nation.

This new year celebrated on month of April belongs neither Sinhalese nor Hindus. Sinhalese new year was in month of May, month named as Vesak which has the most important value for Buddhist. Sinhalese were Buddhists.

Hindus celebrate new year in between month of March and April all over the India. It is known as the first month of Hindu calendar.

The roots of Tamil New Year which is known today as Sinhala and Tamil New Year goes back to era which South Indian barbaric king Kalinga Magha invaded Sri Lanka with help of thousands of mercenaries. He invaded Sri Lanka in 1214 AD and lasted until 1255 AD.

Before his invasion Sinhalese considered month of May as New Year. (Month of Vesak) It is clear that New Year falls in April is a concept which was adopted by force on Sinhalese with the intention of claiming the right of land later on.

Two races having same traditional festival celebrating together. One can say it is there for build to build coexistence among nations but on the other hand the bitter truth is it can be used to explain both nations born on same land, therefore they have similar folk festivals.

Sinhalese were enriched with Buddhis Philosophy and they did not believe in astrology. Now it has been so long on the wrong way. The originality of tradition defaces with adaptation of foreign traditions.

A Friend Met After a Long Time

We left our school in 2014 having completed our advanced level examination successfully. I straight away found a job and after having followed so many boring courses my friend Kushan became a medical laboratory scientist. I didn’t meet him since I left college but he used to call me once or twice a week and crack mad jokes.

This incident took place on month of January 2019 as far as I can remember but I do not remember the day exactly. I happened to travel on a convoy from Trincomalee to Colombo. On my way coming to Colombo I remember that my old mad friends lived in Mirigama. So, I made a phone call to him and informed I’m on my way to Colombo and I could visit his place. Same time we were looking for a place to had our lunch. I could full fill my both requirements if I visited his place.

Once I got closer to Mirigama again I made a phone call to him and this time his response was not to visit his house, he would meet me by the main road. Having loose our second hope we put our lunch packets back to cardboard box where they were stored. I managed to park our truck under a cashew tree where he explained us to stop. There was much shelter because of the huge tree and we could rest for a while.

I got out of the truck looking either side of main road to find where was my friend. Finally, I saw him far ahead of the road coming toward our truck. I wondered if he was crazy, he came rolling a tyre. He was at the age of 23 by then. However, I felt very happy, I met my old friend after long time.

We walk to the shelter under cashew tree and began to talk what we did when we were schooling and what we are going to do in our future. I noticed that he was wearing a short which we usually wore when we were at home and it was too short for him. His upper part was covered with a dusty T-shirt. There were some patches he had stitched using wrong colour cotton. Unfortunately, he had worn his T-shirt inside out. I was frustrated how he came so far from his house in main highway wearing like this. I told him he was wearing his T-shirt inside out. He took off his T-shirt at once and wear it correctly saying thank you machan with a laugh of mouthful. I warned him do not do such stupid things on this main road.

Oh, Golly Gosh! I noticed he was wearing a pair of slippers in two different types. I was clever enough not mention it to him otherwise no one knows what he would do for that. Finally, I gave him some advices not behave like a rascal and I said I must leave now and I was running out of time. He grabbed my hand and asked me to wait for a second. He picked up a piece of wood by the road and threw it towards a bunch of cashews. Oh pity, that caused to fell only one cashew which he offered me. Luckily the owner of cashew tree was not at the garden. I get onboard truck with no idea what to do with that single cashew. I used to discuss this incident with my other friends when we met after few months and we registered him with a nick name ‘hora kajja’ which means cashew thief.
